eat_v and_o drink_v and_o enjoy_v good_a of_o his_o labour_n 8._o every_o expression_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o to_o be_v look_v upon_o apart_o but_o some_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v joint_o with_o other_o sometime_o with_o such_o as_o go_v before_o sometime_o with_o such_o as_o follow_v after_o else_o man_n will_v be_v in_o hazard_n to_o wrest_v the_o scripture_n to_o their_o own_o destruction_n for_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o first_o expression_n in_o this_o verse_n there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v without_o consider_v what_o follow_v it_o may_v seem_v to_o express_v the_o sense_n and_o mind_n of_o epicure_n but_o if_o we_o join_v it_o with_o the_o expression_n immediate_o follow_v of_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a then_o we_o come_v to_o understand_v the_o eat_v and_o drink_v here_o commend_v to_o be_v such_o as_o prejudge_v not_o the_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a good_a of_o man_n soul_n there_o be_v nothing_o better_a for_o a_o man_n then_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a 9_o to_o have_v the_o outward_a comfort_n of_o this_o life_n the_o power_n to_o use_v they_o and_o to_o find_v sweetness_n in_o the_o use_n of_o they_o and_o especial_o the_o grace_n to_o use_v they_o aright_o so_o as_o the_o use_n of_o they_o may_v not_o hinder_v but_o promove_v the_o good_a of_o the_o soul_n all_o this_o be_v from_o the_o liberality_n and_o providence_n of_o a_o good_a god_n and_o in_o it_o our_o father_n allowance_n our_o redeemer_n purchase_v and_o our_o comforter_n presence_n and_o teach_n be_v to_o be_v acknowledge_v for_o so_o say_v solomon_n here_o that_o all_o be_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n the_o name_n god_n be_v in_o the_o plural_a number_n mind_v we_o of_o the_o three_o person_n of_o the_o bless_a trinity_n 10._o whatever_o minister_n say_v to_o the_o lord_n people_n they_o shall_v labour_v to_o see_v it_o by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o likewise_o by_o their_o own_o experience_n whereby_o they_o put_v these_o truth_n they_o deliver_v to_o the_o proof_n and_o labour_n to_o find_v the_o power_n of_o they_o upon_o their_o own_o heart_n for_o say_v he_o i_o see_v that_o this_o be_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n 11._o whereinsoever_o the_o lord_n make_v any_o of_o his_o servant_n to_o excel_v for_o outward_a enjoyment_n or_o privilege_n they_o shall_v labour_v so_o to_o carry_v themselves_o in_o the_o use_n thereof_o that_o from_o their_o own_o experience_n they_o may_v teach_v other_o how_o to_o use_v these_o outward_a advantage_n for_o the_o spiritual_a good_a of_o their_o soul_n consider_v that_o people_n who_o place_n their_o happiness_n in_o these_o thing_n be_v ready_a to_o think_v that_o if_o man_n know_v experimental_o the_o worth_n and_o sweetness_n which_o they_o fancy_v to_o be_v in_o they_o they_o will_v not_o so_o undervalue_v they_o for_o that_o solomon_n may_v convince_v all_o that_o their_o be_v no_o true_a happiness_n in_o the_o use_n of_o these_o thing_n except_o they_o be_v make_v subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v of_o that_o true_a good_a which_o be_v in_o fellowship_n with_o god_n he_o do_v by_o this_o question_n incite_v all_o to_o consider_v that_o he_o who_o assert_n this_o truth_n be_v inferior_a to_o none_o for_o plenty_n of_o outward_a comfort_n and_o conveniency_n of_o speedy_a enjoyment_n of_o they_o while_o he_o say_v who_o can_v eat_v or_o who_o can_v hasten_v thereunto_o more_o than_o i_o verse_n 26._o for_o god_n give_v to_o a_o man_n that_o be_v good_a in_o his_o sight_n wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o joy_n but_o to_o the_o sinner_n 〈◊〉_d give_v travel_n to_o gather_v and_o to_o heap_v up_o that_o he_o may_v give_v to_o he_o that_o be_v good_a before_o god_n this_o also_o be_v vanity_n and_o vexation_n of_o spirit_n have_v give_v a_o short_a sum_n of_o that_o true_a happiness_n which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o life_n he_o do_v here_o describe_v the_o blessedness_n of_o they_o that_o seek_v after_o it_o and_o the_o misery_n of_o these_o that_o slight_a it_o and_o this_o he_o bring_v in_o as_o a_o reason_n to_o move_v man_n to_o fall_v in_o love_n with_o it_o as_o for_o the_o man_n that_o take_v the_o right_a way_n of_o seek_v happiness_n who_o here_o he_o call_v the_o man_n that_o be_v good_a in_o god_n sight_n which_o signify_v one_o free_o favour_v and_o delight_v in_o and_o so_o a_o justify_v person_n through_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o one_o who_o be_v sincere_o study_v what_o be_v good_a or_o well-pleasing_a not_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o world_n but_o of_o god_n the_o lord_n give_v and_o give_v free_o and_o in_o give_v make_v sure_a and_o firm_a to_o he_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o joy_n whereby_o be_v mean_v nâ—t_o only_a skill_n to_o purchase_v a_o competency_n of_o thing_n worldly_a with_o prudence_n to_o manage_v and_o use_v the_o same_o aright_o together_o with_o cheerfulness_n in_o the_o use_n thereof_o which_o can_v be_v exclude_v here_o see_v the_o same_o be_v express_v before_o as_o subservient_fw-fr to_o that_o happiness_n which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o world_n but_o main_o a_o increase_n of_o save_a knowledge_n which_o be_v set_v forth_o by_o two_o word_n because_o there_o be_v many_o degree_n of_o it_o and_o a_o increase_n of_o spiritual_a joy_n flow_v from_o the_o faith_n of_o acceptation_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n i_o say_v the_o word_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o increase_n of_o these_o thing_n because_o they_o be_v promise_v to_o the_o man_n who_o be_v bâ—fore_o favour_v and_o so_o have_v the_o first_o grace_n next_o as_o for_o the_o man_n who_o continue_v in_o his_o mistake_n concern_v the_o way_n to_o true_a happiness_n who_o he_o call_v here_o the_o sinner_n not_o 〈◊〉_d if_o the_o other_o former_o speak_v of_o or_o any_o other_o in_o the_o world_n do_v not_o deserve_v that_o name_n but_o because_o such_o a_o one_o be_v give_v up_o to_o the_o slavery_n and_o servitude_n of_o his_o lust_n in_o a_o unreconciled_a state_n as_o the_o word_n sinner_n often_o signify_v in_o scripture_n when_o it_o be_v oppose_v to_o the_o good_a or_o righteous_a 1_o pet._n 4_o 18_o and_o as_o the_o original_a word_n here_o signify_v one_o that_o err_v from_o the_o scope_n i_o e._n who_o be_v mistake_v in_o the_o main_n concern_v true_a happiness_n &_o be_v pursue_v the_o same_o in_o thing_n of_o this_o earth_n to_o such_o a_o one_o god_n give_v in_o his_o justice_n and_o displeasure_n as_o his_o sure_a portion_n if_o he_o continue_v in_o that_o way_n sore_a travel_n or_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v painful_a servitude_n and_o slavery_n in_o gather_v and_o heap_v which_o word_n import_v he_o to_o be_v both_o successful_a and_o unsatisfy_v that_o which_o he_o must_v leave_v behind_o he_o to_o be_v possess_v by_o these_o for_o who_o he_o intend_v least_o even_o to_o one_o that_o be_v good_a in_o god_n sight_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v as_o if_o every_o wicked_a man_n shall_v make_v some_o godly_a man_n his_o heir_n for_o then_o the_o godly_a shall_v be_v the_o rich_a in_o the_o world_n but_o that_o often_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o wicked_n pain_n redound_v to_o the_o advantage_n of_o the_o godly_a or_o rather_o that_o his_o purchase_n and_o estate_n be_v at_o the_o lord_n disposal_n to_o give_v to_o who_o he_o please_v and_o think_v good_a enough_o for_o receive_v such_o trifle_n and_o this_o excessive_a pain_n of_o man_n for_o these_o thing_n which_o they_o can_v neither_o long_o enjoy_v nor_o transfer_v to_o other_o as_o they_o please_v he_o censure_v as_o vanity_n that_o be_v a_o sinful_a course_n and_o such_o as_o will_v in_o the_o end_n produce_v nothing_o but_o torment_n to_o man_n spirit_n hence_o learn_v 1._o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o lord_n large_a and_o comfortable_a allowance_n to_o his_o own_o shall_v move_v all_o to_o take_v they_o to_o his_o way_n of_o seek_v after_o happiness_n and_o therefore_o this_o allowance_n shall_v be_v much_o insist_v on_o by_o his_o servant_n and_o often_o view_v by_o people_n
sound_a truth_n in_o the_o general_n but_o they_o must_v also_o take_v pain_n to_o reckon_v out_o and_o insist_v upon_o particular_a instance_n wherein_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o they_o deliver_v be_v verify_v that_o so_o the_o lord_n people_n by_o the_o ordinary_a occurence_n of_o his_o providence_n and_o dispensation_n with_o they_o may_v be_v mind_v of_o what_o they_o have_v hear_v and_o in_o these_o may_v see_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o same_o for_o here_o this_o divine_a preacher_n worthy_a to_o be_v imitate_v by_o all_o minister_n be_v guide_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o hold_v out_o that_o truth_n that_o there_o be_v a_o season_n and_o set_v time_n for_o every_o thing_n and_o purpose_n and_o so_o leave_v it_o to_o people_n to_o apply_v the_o same_o to_o the_o particular_a passage_n of_o god_n providence_n along_o their_o life_n but_o for_o their_o help_n he_o condescend_v upon_o twenty_o eight_o particular_a dispensation_n the_o time_n and_o season_n whereof_o be_v set_v and_o fix_v there_o be_v a_o time_n to_o be_v bear_v and_o a_o time_n to_o die_v a_o time_n to_o plant_v etc._n etc._n 2._o as_o their_o will_n still_o be_v variety_n of_o change_n and_o a_o mixture_n of_o sour_a and_o sweet_a in_o the_o lord_n dispensation_n with_o the_o child_n of_o man_n in_o this_o life_n it_o be_v proper_a for_o the_o other_o life_n to_o be_v without_o any_o change_n or_o mixture_n so_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o better_a and_o worse_a thereof_o ought_v to_o be_v join_v in_o our_o thought_n and_o the_o one_o set_v against_o the_o other_o that_o what_o be_v comfortable_a may_v be_v possess_v humble_o thankful_o and_o with_o preparation_n for_o a_o change_n and_o what_o be_v sad_a may_v be_v submit_v unto_o since_o we_o have_v have_v sweet_a and_o may_v have_v hope_n of_o a_o change_n to_o the_o better_a again_o therefore_o be_v these_o pair_n or_o couple_n of_o instance_n make_v up_o of_o sad_a and_o sweet_a dispensation_n as_o that_o which_o be_v the_o lot_n of_o man_n in_o this_o life_n and_o which_o ought_v joint_o to_o be_v consider_v for_o our_o use_n there_o be_v a_o time_n to_o be_v bear_v and_o a_o time_n to_o die_v a_o time_n to_o plant_v and_o a_o time_n to_o pluck_v up_o that_o which_o be_v plant_v 3._o these_o event_n which_o be_v most_o certain_a to_o we_o as_o to_o the_o ordinary_a time_n of_o their_o existence_n and_o these_o also_o which_o be_v altogether_o uncertain_a for_o the_o particular_a time_n of_o they_o and_o be_v yet_o certain_o know_v to_o fall_v out_o be_v ordinary_o most_v slight_v by_o we_o as_o to_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o lord_n time_v of_o they_o and_o yet_o will_v be_v most_o usef_a â—_o for_o we_o to_o consider_v for_o here_o the_o time_n of_o birth_n which_o ordinary_o after_o the_o conception_n be_v certain_o know_v and_o the_o time_n of_o death_n which_o though_o it_o be_v unknown_a be_v most_o certain_o know_v as_o to_o the_o futurition_n of_o it_o be_v first_o condescend_v upon_o as_o thing_n we_o do_v most_o ready_o slight_a and_o thing_n most_o useful_a to_o be_v consider_v as_o they_o fall_v under_o the_o determination_n of_o providence_n for_o the_o time_n of_o they_o there_o be_v a_o time_n to_o be_v bear_v and_o a_o time_n to_o die_v 4._o the_o particular_a time_n of_o every_o one_o entry_n into_o the_o world_n have_v be_v from_o eternity_n fix_v and_o condescend_v upon_o by_o the_o lord_n and_o the_o same_o aught_o to_o be_v serious_o consider_v by_o all_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o woman_n both_o in_o reference_n to_o their_o own_o birth_n and_o other_o especial_o these_o who_o be_v bear_v to_o they_o that_o they_o may_v look_v upon_o all_o the_o comfortable_a passage_n of_o providence_n which_o they_o come_v to_o understand_v as_o encouragment_n to_o serve_v the_o lord_n and_o upon_o all_o the_o sad_a passage_n they_o have_v meet_v with_o as_o these_o whereunto_o they_o be_v bear_v and_o which_o therefore_o they_o shall_v endure_v patient_o job_n 14.1_o that_o they_o may_v be_v thankful_a to_o he_o who_o preserve_v they_o or_o they_o in_o the_o womb_n psal_n 139_o 13._o and_o bring_v they_o safe_o thence_o psal_n 22.9_o with_o the_o right_a proportion_n psal_n 139.15_o 16._o and_o do_v not_o make_v the_o womb_n their_o grave_n that_o these_o who_o have_v none_o bear_v unto_o they_o may_v reverence_v he_o who_o give_v and_o withhold_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o womb_n as_o he_o think_v fit_a psal_n 127.3_o for_o such_o consideration_n of_o the_o time_n of_o their_o condition_n and_o to_o wean_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o from_o seek_v happipiness_n in_o this_o earth_n where_o so_o many_o change_n be_v which_o be_v solomon_n scope_n here_o still_o to_o be_v remember_v and_o apply_v to_o all_o these_o instance_n the_o first_o two_o may_v be_v take_v in_o reference_n to_o man_n person_n and_o the_o other_o to_o their_o outward_a estate_n and_o enjoyment_n whatsoever_o and_o so_o the_o kill_v here_o speak_v of_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o such_o sad_a correction_n as_o the_o lord_n see_v fit_a shall_v be_v inflict_v upon_o the_o body_n or_o spirit_n of_o man_n such_o as_o seem_v
for_o every_o duty_n neh._n 8.10_o therefore_o the_o preacher_n express_v the_o right_a use_n of_o the_o lord_n favourable_a dispensation_n in_o this_o order_n that_o man_n shall_v first_o rejoice_v and_o then_o do_v good_a in_o his_o life_n 5._o they_o who_o heart_n be_v cheer_v by_o the_o proof_n of_o the_o lord_n bounty_n in_o his_o deal_n with_o they_o and_o do_v express_v that_o cheerfulness_n by_o their_o activity_n in_o duty_n that_o may_v honour_v he_o they_o have_v find_v that_o true_a good_a which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o life_n and_o when_o man_n either_o take_v not_o the_o comfort_v allow_v upon_o they_o or_o do_v not_o express_v and_o evidence_n the_o same_o by_o well-doing_n they_o get_v no_o good_a of_o their_o great_a mercy_n but_o much_o hurt_n for_o this_o must_v be_v the_o only_a true_a good_a which_o man_n can_v attain_v by_o all_o the_o comfortable_a passage_n of_o god_n providence_n in_o their_o life_n see_v as_o the_o wiseman_n say_v there_o be_v no_o good_a in_o they_o but_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v rejoice_v and_o do_v good_a in_o his_o life_n 6._o there_o be_v no_o short_a term_n of_o do_v good_a than_o the_o term_n of_o life_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o part_n of_o a_o man_n life_n to_o be_v otherwise_o employ_v whereunto_o he_o shall_v be_v engage_v by_o consider_v that_o he_o will_v not_o have_v after_o this_o life_n opportunity_n or_o advantage_n to_o do_v good_a as_o he_o have_v here_o by_o gain_v and_o allure_v other_o to_o duty_n towards_o god_n for_o so_o say_v the_o preacher_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v do_v good_a in_o his_o life_n to_o wit_n along_o his_o whole_a time_n 7._o although_o the_o creature_n comfort_n be_v alwise_o to_o be_v use_v in_o a_o holy_a and_o sober_a manner_n 1_o tim._n 4.4.5_o and_o never_o as_o fuel_n to_o man_n lust_n deut_n 6.11_o 12._o yet_o when_o the_o lord_n be_v deal_v more_o liberal_o with_o man_n in_o outward_a thing_n than_o at_o other_o time_n he_o do_v allow_v a_o more_o liberal_a and_o cheerful_a use_n of_o the_o creature_n upon_o they_o that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v the_o more_o strengthen_v and_o encourage_v for_o these_o weighty_a duty_n which_o be_v suitable_a for_o such_o dispensation_n for_o see_v it_o be_v god_n allowance_n always_o while_o he_o continue_v life_n and_o the_o use_n of_o the_o creature_n for_o the_o maintenance_n thereof_o that_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v this_o eat_v and_o drink_v here_o recommend_v must_v be_v mean_v of_o a_o more_o free_a and_o cheerful_a use_n of_o these_o thing_n under_o his_o more_o favourable_a dispensation_n especial_o consider_v that_o it_o must_v be_v subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o former_a two_o rejoice_v and_o do_v good_a and_o also_o that_o every_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v 8._o although_o the_o lord_n may_v give_v to_o his_o people_n abundance_n of_o outward_a thing_n for_o which_o they_o have_v not_o labour_v deut._n 6.11_o yet_o it_o be_v his_o mind_n that_o every_o one_o who_o take_v the_o comfort_n of_o the_o creature_n shall_v be_v employ_v in_o some_o honest_a lawful_a labour_n while_o they_o have_v ability_n whereof_o their_o eat_v and_o drink_v encouragement_n to_o the_o wise_a to_o communicate_v their_o knowledge_n by_o promise_a success_n to_o they_o for_o the_o hebrew_n express_v a_o promise_n by_o way_n of_o enunciation_n in_o the_o present_a time_n and_o this_o promise_n of_o success_n he_o illustrate_v by_o compare_v the_o same_o with_o that_o success_n which_o other_o man_n word_n have_v even_o suppose_v they_o to_o be_v ruler_n while_o he_o say_v more_o than_o the_o cry_n of_o he_o that_o rule_v among_o fool_n the_o opposition_n show_v that_o the_o ruler_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o destitute_a of_o this_o save_v wisdom_n and_o so_o like_o his_o foolish_a subject_n among_o who_o he_o rule_v so_o the_o meaning_n seem_v to_o be_v that_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n or_o the_o meek_a counsel_n of_o the_o godly_a however_o despise_v by_o the_o most_o part_n of_o man_n shall_v gain_v acceptance_n with_o peaceable_a and_o humble_a soul_n even_o when_o he_o same_o may_v not_o be_v avow_v public_o more_o than_o the_o most_o public_a edict_n of_o wicked_a ruler_n shall_v have_v with_o the_o generality_n of_o their_o foolish_a subject_n next_o that_o all_o may_v be_v move_v to_o 2._o it_o be_v not_o a_o clamorous_a hot_a and_o violent_a way_n of_o press_v even_o truth_n itself_o that_o will_v gain_v acceptance_n to_o it_o nor_o will_v that_o way_n be_v study_v by_o they_o that_o be_v true_o wise_a and_o desire_v to_o spread_v the_o truth_n but_o rather_o it_o be_v that_o quiet_a and_o calm_a way_n of_o deliver_v of_o it_o which_o christ_n himself_o use_v who_o do_v not_o strive_v nor_o cry_v nor_o cause_v his_o voice_n to_o be_v hear_v in_o the_o street_n that_o prevail_v most_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v it_o so_o that_o the_o efficacy_n and_o fruit_n of_o speak_v the_o truth_n may_v be_v see_v to_o be_v his_o secret_a power_n with_o it_o and_o the_o beauty_n and_o equity_n of_o the_o thing_n speak_v rather_o than_o any_o thing_n it_o have_v from_o just_a with_o god_n to_o make_v their_o most_o imperious_a and_o public_a command_n have_v little_a respect_n with_o their_o subject_n and_o less_o than_o they_o give_v to_o his_o counsel_n come_v
