with_o god_n though_o both_o circumcision_n and_o baptism_n he_o receive_v that_o he_o may_v fulfil_v all_o righteousness_n but_o the_o divine_a testimony_n receive_v into_o the_o sanctify_a mind_n and_o express_v in_o the_o preach_n and_o write_n of_o the_o holy_a man_n of_o god_n the_o apostle_n and_o prophet_n bare_a and_o bear_v a_o far_o full_a analogy_n thereto_o then_o as_o in_o any_o other_o man_n it_o contract_v nothing_o of_o sinfulness_n or_o uncleanness_n to_o itself_o as_o receive_v and_o give_v forth_o by_o they_o from_o their_o receipt_n of_o it_o or_o give_v it_o forth_o and_o therefore_o in_o all_o the_o prophecying_n of_o other_o man_n though_o not_o to_o be_v despise_v we_o be_v to_o try_v all_o thing_n and_o hold_v fast_o that_o that_o be_v good_a to_o try_v they_o not_o by_o compare_v they_o with_o or_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o say_n tradition_n reputed_o orthodox_n doctrine_n frames_n systime_n or_o composure_n of_o other_o man_n of_o what_o ever_o party_n no_o though_o of_o the_o straight_a sect_n of_o religion_n among_o a_o profess_a people_n of_o god_n but_o even_o their_o say_n tradition_n doctrine_n frames_n systime_n or_o composure_n be_v all_o and_o every_o of_o they_o to_o be_v try_v and_o judge_v of_o by_o the_o word_n and_o say_n of_o the_o holy_a apostle_n and_o prophet_n and_o wherein_o soever_o any_o of_o they_o or_o any_o man_n doctrine_n or_o say_n disagree_v therewith_o they_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v reject_v of_o we_o but_o their_o say_n be_v in_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v reverence_v and_o receive_v without_o doubt_n or_o suspicion_n as_o the_o say_n of_o god_n as_o indeed_o they_o be_v though_o utter_v and_o give_v forth_o by_o man_n and_o even_o as_o christ_n though_o as_o bear_v of_o a_o woman_n and_o as_o to_o his_o flesh_n partake_v of_o man_n infirmity_n yet_o have_v in_o he_o for_o all_o that_o even_o in_o that_o state_n the_o power_n and_o force_n of_o the_o eternal_a word_n so_o as_o that_o to_o they_o that_o receive_v he_o he_o give_v heavenly_a light_n life_n understanding_n strength_n and_o freedom_n yea_o the_o power_n and_o privilege_n to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n even_o to_o they_o who_o believe_v on_o his_o name_n and_o though_o his_o flesh_n and_o body_n may_v suffer_v pain_n and_o be_v abuse_v and_o crucify_a as_o indeed_o it_o be_v yet_o his_o deity_n or_o the_o bless_a word_n be_v not_o thereby_o impair_v even_o so_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n receive_v and_o conceive_v in_o a_o pure_a mind_n and_o good_a conscience_n as_o in_o the_o holy_a apostle_n and_o prophet_n it_o most_o certain_o and_o clear_o be_v and_o thence_o bring_v forth_o to_o light_n by_o word_n or_o write_n with_o which_o it_o be_v clothe_v and_o as_o it_o be_v embody_v though_o its_o form_n appear_v according_a to_o the_o model_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o conceive_v it_o and_o the_o letter_n or_o speech_n in_o which_o it_o be_v express_v may_v seem_v rude_a and_o plain_a as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n speech_n be_v by_o some_o say_v to_o be_v contemptible_a 2_o cor._n 10.10_o yea_o and_o may_v be_v expose_v to_o diverse_a injury_n or_o abuse_n yet_o the_o divine_a and_o heavenly_a truth_n though_o in_o that_o dress_n retain_v its_o divine_a nature_n and_o worth_n true_a it_o be_v that_o its_o force_n towards_o other_o may_v by_o such_o injury_n be_v less_o apparent_a and_o they_o may_v therefore_o more_o slight_a and_o disregard_n it_o as_o christ_n also_o by_o reason_n of_o his_o suffer_a reproach_n and_o abuse_n be_v more_o slight_v by_o many_o but_o yet_o where_o indeed_o mind_v and_o embrace_v it_o produce_v singular_a and_o divine_a effect_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o life_n by_o virtue_n of_o that_o divine_a nature_n and_o spirit_n that_o be_v in_o and_o with_o it_o so_o as_o to_o inlighten_v instruct_v reprove_v convert_v comfort_n cleanse_v sanctify_v and_o save_v they_o yea_o make_v they_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o in_o some_o measure_n like_o to_o god_n and_o in_o the_o end_n blessed_n and_o happy_a as_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n to_o those_o that_o reject_v or_o abuse_v it_o it_o occasion_n the_o great_a judgement_n and_o heavy_a condemnation_n and_o so_o do_v christ_n also_o to_o they_o that_o stumble_v at_o and_o reject_v he_o and_o his_o government_n wherefore_o the_o heavenly_a truth_n be_v not_o to_o be_v judge_v by_o or_o value_v according_a to_o its_o outward_a dress_n and_o clothing_n nor_o according_a to_o the_o man_n and_o his_o meanness_n through_o who_o it_o come_v and_o in_o and_o by_o who_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v embody_v but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v receive_v according_a to_o its_o divine_a original_a and_o to_o be_v make_v much_o of_o according_a to_o its_o excellent_a virtue_n and_o effect_n though_o no_o man_n say_v or_o write_v be_v further_a the_o truth_n of_o god_n and_o divine_a than_o it_o be_v of_o god_n and_o be_v pure_o emit_v from_o a_o pure_a mind_n thou_o must_v apply_v this_o analogy_n full_o and_o proper_o as_o godliness_n the_o right_a understanding_n perception_n and_o receipt_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n so_o as_o to_o the_o renew_v they_o in_o the_o spirit_n of_o their_o mind_n about_o which_o there_o be_v in_o many_o both_o teacher_n and_o professor_n of_o religion_n exceed_v great_a blindness_n and_o thence_o incertainty_n and_o confusion_n in_o their_o apprehension_n the_o labour_n of_o the_o foolish_a weary_v every_o one_o of_o they_o because_o they_o know_v not_o the_o way_n into_o the_o city_n eccles_n 10.15_o much_o zeal_n there_o be_v and_o may_v be_v about_o the_o outward_a form_n and_o time_n of_o baptism_n the_o manner_n and_o way_n of_o pray_v receipt_n of_o the_o supper_n or_o communion_n hear_v fast_v the_o time_n and_o place_n of_o worship_n with_o its_o form_n and_o ceremony_n yea_o and_o about_o walk_v in_o divers_a religious_a practice_n when_o yet_o inward_o pride_n and_o arrogancy_n confidence_n in_o ourselves_o our_o own_o frame_n or_o work_n with_o unbelief_n and_o rejection_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o truth_n of_o god_n despise_v hate_v and_o even_o persecute_v man_n because_o differ_v in_o their_o mode_n and_o apprehension_n envy_n malice_n covetousness_n fraud_n and_o such_o like_a thing_n lurk_v and_o bear_v sway_n underneath_o and_o yet_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o think_v all_o be_v well_o with_o they_o and_o encourage_v themselves_o and_o one_o another_o to_o expect_v god_n kingdom_n cry_v peace_n peace_n where_o god_n speak_v not_o peace_n and_o heal_v the_o hurt_n slight_o that_o shall_v be_v make_v sound_n like_o those_o in_o jeremiahs_n day_n that_o think_v their_o have_v god_n temple_n and_o worship_n among_o they_o shall_v secure_v they_o from_o judgement_n though_o their_o heart_n be_v uncircumcised_a and_o their_o way_n and_o do_n naught_o and_o unmend_v but_o it_o be_v good_a to_o take_v heed_n to_o sound_a doctrine_n the_o wholesome_a word_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o his_o holy_a one_o teach_v and_o instruct_v by_o he_o for_o they_o speak_v what_o they_o know_v and_o testify_v what_o they_o see_v not_o steer_v our_o course_n by_o the_o multitude_n for_o so_o we_o shall_v be_v rejecter_n of_o the_o truth_n for_o christ_n doctrine_n be_v not_o so_o crowd_v after_o as_o to_o be_v hearty_o embrace_v by_o the_o most_o for_o than_o will_v he_o not_o have_v say_v we_o speak_v what_o we_o know_v and_o testify_v what_o we_o have_v see_v and_o no_o man_n receive_v our_o testimony_n wherein_o after_o signification_n of_o his_o own_o and_o his_o holy_a servant_n fitness_n for_o teach_v other_o and_o faithfulness_n in_o teach_v he_o fault_n and_o complain_v of_o the_o too_o great_a want_n of_o credit_n to_o and_o receipt_n of_o their_o faithful_a teach_n by_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n which_o he_o yet_o signifi_v to_o be_v the_o more_o inexcusable_a because_o he_o speak_v but_o hitherto_o of_o thing_n earthly_a or_o do_v upon_o earth_n and_o therefore_o thence_o argue_v their_o great_a unfitness_n and_o incapacity_n for_o heavenly_a thing_n more_o proper_o and_o in_o a_o full_a sense_n such_o if_o i_o have_v tell_v you_o earthly_a thing_n and_o you_o believe_v not_o how_o shall_v you_o believe_v if_o i_o tell_v you_o of_o heavenly_a v._o 12._o as_o imply_v also_o his_o fitness_n and_o ability_n for_o declare_v the_o heavenly_a thing_n the_o thing_n do_v or_o to_o be_v do_v in_o heaven_n also_o yea_o and_o he_o further_o signify_v his_o only_a fitness_n and_o sufficiency_n for_o declare_v they_o in_o what_o he_o add_v viz._n when_o he_o say_v ver_fw-la 13._o and_o no_o man_n have_v ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n but_o he_o that_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n even_o the_o son_n of_o man_n who_o be_v in_o heaven_n signify_v as_o his_o own_o descent_n from_o and_o yet_o be_v in_o heaven_n so_o that_o none_o but_o he_o that_o son_n of_o man_n be_v fit_a or_o able_a to_o declare_v the_o thing_n of_o heaven_n because_o none_o else_o come_v down_o thence_o furnish_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o and_o whereas_o nicodemus_n may_v still_o be_v more_o amaze_v at_o these_o intimation_n of_o his_o come_n down_o from_o heaven_n ascend_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o be_v in_o heaven_n even_o while_o he_o see_v and_o hear_v he_o on_o the_o earth_n speak_v to_o he_o he_o add_v the_o word_n of_o the_o text._n and_o as_o moses_n lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n in_o the_o wilderness_n so_o must_v the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v lift_v up_o that_o whosoever_o believe_v on_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v eternal_a life_n of_o which_o he_o give_v the_o reason_n in_o the_o next_o verse_n for_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o give_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v on_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n etc._n etc._n whence_o we_o may_v note_v by_o the_o way_n that_o christ_n do_v not_o for_o regenerate_v nicodemus_n preach_v to_o he_o some_o particular_a love_n or_o special_a manifestation_n of_o it_o to_o he_o more_o than_o to_o other_o but_o general_o love_n or_o grace_n even_o the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o the_o world_n as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n also_o tell_v we_o that_o that_o which_o save_v he_o and_o other_o from_o their_o natural_a and_o sinful_a state_n be_v the_o appearance_n of_o the_o love_n and_o pity_n of_o god_n to_o mankind_n tit._n 3.3_o 4._o he_o say_v not_o it_o be_v some_o peculiar_a love_n to_o they_o more_o than_o to_o other_o that_o be_v make_v to_o appear_v as_o the_o object_n upon_o which_o their_o eye_n and_o heart_n be_v fasten_v but_o the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o man_n more_o indefinite_o and_o general_o and_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v hear_v who_o reject_v the_o testimony_n of_o god_n love_n and_o grace_n to_o mankind_n and_o to_o the_o world_n make_v it_o their_o first_o and_o main_a business_n to_o preach_v special_a and_o particular_a love_n to_o some_o elect_a and_o choose_a one_o as_o the_o way_n to_o bring_v soul_n in_o to_o god_n let_v we_o follow_v the_o way_n our_o saviour_n have_v walk_v in_o before_o we_o preach_v to_o man_n god_n good_a will_n and_o love_n as_o testify_v to_o all_o in_o general_n in_o the_o gift_n of_o christ_n and_o leave_v it_o to_o god_n to_o bear_v testimony_n to_o the_o word_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o to_o work_v therewith_o open_v their_o understanding_n and_o persuade_v their_o heart_n to_o embrace_v it_o and_o evidence_v and_o bear_v witness_n to_o they_o as_o he_o who_o know_v their_o heart_n see_v good_a act._n 14.3_o &_o 15.8_o chap._n ii_o the_o word_n of_o the_o text_n consider_v its_o part_n four_o main_a point_n thence_o observe_v the_o first_o point_n speak_v to_o viz._n the_o type_n of_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n lift_v up_o in_o some_o brief_a note_n upon_o it_o let_v we_o view_v the_o word_n themselves_o which_o i_o have_v choose_v to_o treat_v on_o wherein_o we_o have_v 1._o the_o main_a thing_n assert_v viz._n that_o the_o son_n of_o man_n must_v be_v lift_v up_o 2._o the_o manner_n of_o it_o propose_v by_o way_n of_o similitude_n as_o moses_n lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n in_o the_o wilderness_n so_o must_v the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v lift_v up_o 3._o the_o end_n of_o it_o declare_v viz._n that_o whosoever_o believe_v on_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v eternal_a life_n we_o may_v note_v from_o the_o word_n also_o these_o several_a note_n or_o point_n 1._o that_o moses_n lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n in_o the_o wilderness_n that_o be_v suppose_v and_o imply_v 2._o that_o the_o son_n of_o man_n must_v be_v lift_v up_o that_o be_v main_o assert_v 3._o that_o this_o latter_a must_v answer_v to_o the_o former_a the_o lift_v up_o the_o son_n of_o man_n must_v answer_v to_o the_o lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n by_o moses_n in_o the_o wilderness_n as_o moses_n lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n in_o the_o wilderness_n so_o must_v the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v lift_v up_o 4._o that_o the_o end_n of_o the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v so_o lift_v up_o be_v that_o whosoever_o believe_v on_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v eternal_a life_n to_o the_o first_o point_n which_o be_v the_o comparison_n or_o that_o by_o which_o the_o lift_n up_o of_o the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v illustrate_v and_o set_v forth_o viz._n moses_n his_o lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n do_v not_o nor_o may_v lay_v by_o the_o serpent_n because_o make_v of_o brass_n nor_o the_o people_n upon_o that_o account_n slight_v it_o as_o know_v it_o after_o the_o flesh_n after_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o flesh_n or_o the_o outward_a matter_n and_o substance_n of_o it_o but_o know_v it_o after_o the_o spirit_n as_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o accompany_v with_o his_o presence_n and_o power_n he_o be_v to_o and_o do_v set_v it_o up_o and_o they_o be_v to_o look_v to_o it_o so_o ought_v we_o not_o know_v christ_n after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n not_o as_o many_o delude_a person_n who_o judge_v of_o he_o and_o all_o his_o ordinance_n and_o messenger_n according_a to_o the_o flesh_n that_o be_v after_o their_o own_o carnal_a wisdom_n and_o according_a to_o the_o meanness_n of_o the_o outward_a and_o appear_a substance_n both_o of_o he_o and_o they_o do_v therefore_o slight_a and_o fall_v off_o from_o both_o he_o and_o they_o not_o make_v use_n of_o or_o reverence_v they_o nor_o look_v for_o grace_n and_o blessing_n from_o he_o the_o son_n of_o man._n but_o as_o god_n holy_a one_o who_o behold_v he_o as_o god_n appointment_n and_o according_a to_o his_o divine_a be_v and_o perfection_n and_o as_o commend_v by_o the_o holy_a spirit_n so_o let_v we_o look_v to_o he_o for_o all_o help_n and_o salvation_n in_o those_o ordinance_n and_o way_n that_o be_v of_o his_o appoint_v 5._o as_o moses_n lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n only_o and_o nothing_o with_o it_o or_o beside_o it_o as_o the_o appointment_n of_o god_n for_o heal_v those_o that_o be_v lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n that_o it_o may_v be_v see_v which_o god_n give_v the_o virtue_n to_o or_o by_o so_o also_o baptism_n and_o the_o supper_n and_o preach_v and_o prayer_n be_v to_o be_v use_v but_o not_o as_o if_o they_o of_o themselves_o be_v of_o any_o benefit_n to_o we_o but_o as_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v discover_v to_o we_o and_o exhibit_v to_o our_o view_n by_o they_o or_o eye_v in_o they_o they_o that_o use_v they_o or_o lift_v they_o up_o otherwise_o make_v they_o the_o object_n of_o their_o hope_n and_o the_o thing_n as_o in_o themselves_o eye_v by_o they_o abuse_v they_o and_o err_v from_o the_o truth_n those_o observation_n as_o preach_v namely_o though_o otherwise_o never_o so_o eloquent_a pithy_a witty_a zealous_a and_o so_o baptism_n or_o the_o supper_n though_o as_o to_o the_o outward_a observation_n never_o so_o right_a if_o any_o way_n they_o may_v be_v practise_v so_o as_o that_o they_o present_v not_o or_o man_n look_v beside_o
