wisdom_n and_o such_o understanding_n what_o not_o he_o faith_n he_o make_v no_o question_n he_o can_v miss_v of_o faith_n and_o so_o he_o go_v away_o comfortable_o and_o content_o thus_o you_o see_v the_o faith_n of_o this_o man_n second_o we_o come_v to_o view_v and_o to_o see_v where_o he_o fall_v short_a now_o you_o see_v he_o oh_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v he_o see_v himself_o and_o brethren_n observe_v thus_o much_o few_o of_o these_o man_n be_v ever_o bring_v home_o by_o the_o powerful_a preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o their_o own_o wisdom_n be_v beyond_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o they_o say_v such_o a_o minister_n be_v a_o good_a scholar_n but_o have_v he_o that_o wisdom_n and_o those_o part_n and_o the_o like_a thus_o they_o rear_v up_o bulwark_n against_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n that_o it_o sink_v not_o into_o their_o heart_n therefore_o to_o make_v this_o man_n know_v to_o himself_o observe_v thus_o much_o in_o the_o general_a the_o baseness_n of_o this_o man_n faith_n for_o it_o be_v no_o better_o but_o that_o he_o be_v delude_v that_o he_o can_v see_v it_o it_o discover_v itself_o thus_o it_o be_v breed_v in_o his_o book_n and_o in_o his_o judgement_n and_o go_v no_o further_o and_o it_o be_v far_o from_o save_v faith_n therefore_o that_o the_o indictment_n may_v lie_v clear_a and_o that_o we_o may_v outbid_v he_o in_o his_o book_n learning_n and_o all_o know_v thus_o much_o the_o main_a ground_n of_o this_o man_n mistake_n may_v be_v discover_v thus_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n first_o illumination_n second_o application_n as_o we_o term_v it_o illumination_n not_o only_o be_v when_o a_o man_n have_v the_o common_a rumour_n and_o intimation_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n and_o know_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o text_n and_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o scripture_n this_o the_o reprobate_n may_v have_v and_o this_o he_o have_v but_o there_o be_v also_o a_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o the_o affection_n and_o then_o there_o come_v a_o application_n wherein_o the_o soul_n go_v out_o to_o the_o promise_n and_o take_v that_o for_o his_o good_a which_o be_v thereunto_o appoint_v now_o observe_v this_o judicious_a man_n he_o have_v a_o general_a apprehension_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o as_o for_o that_o special_a work_n upon_o the_o will_n and_o to_o enter_v in_o upon_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n and_o to_o have_v the_o sap_n and_o sweet_a of_o these_o and_o to_o go_v out_o to_o christ_n and_o to_o take_v all_o from_o christ_n he_o be_v a_o stranger_n to_o this_o and_o it_o go_v beyond_o all_o his_o book_n learning_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o when_o the_o minister_n come_v to_o handle_v these_o point_n he_o say_v the_o minister_n be_v something_o confuse_v to_o day_n and_o the_o reason_n why_o he_o faith_n so_o it_o be_v because_o he_o do_v not_o understand_v they_o these_o man_n be_v ignorant_a in_o the_o spiritual_a turn_n of_o the_o heart_n john_n 3.8_o 9_o when_o christ_n come_v to_o teach_v nicodemus_n he_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n and_o think_v that_o christ_n speak_v without_o book_n therefore_o christ_n read_v the_o lecture_n again_o and_o say_v i_o speak_v of_o the_o spiritual_a work_n that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o flesh_n be_v flesh_n and_o that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n be_v spirit_n oh_o say_v he_o how_o can_v these_o thing_n be_v he_o can_v not_o gainsay_v christ_n and_o yet_o because_o he_o can_v not_o understand_v it_o therefore_o he_o will_v not_o yield_v so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o man_n it_o befall_v this_o man_n as_o it_o be_v with_o some_o wise_a lawyer_n he_o read_v over_o a_o man_n writing_n and_o the_o lease_n and_o he_o rehearse_v the_o tenor_n upon_o which_o the_o land_n be_v hold_v and_o what_o right_a the_o man_n have_v to_o they_o he_o lay_v open_v all_o the_o question_n of_o the_o law_n and_o he_o read_v his_o name_n in_o the_o will_n and_o yet_o he_o never_o read_v his_o own_o name_n there_o nor_o any_o right_n that_o he_o have_v to_o they_o just_o so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o judicious_a professor_n he_o be_v able_a to_o dispute_v of_o the_o main_a point_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o show_v that_o other_o have_v right_a to_o they_o and_o he_o read_v the_o writing_n but_o never_o come_v to_o partake_v of_o they_o himself_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o wise_a man_n that_o come_v to_o inquire_v for_o christ_n
his_o heart_n must_v needs_o have_v a_o gracious_a and_o a_o godly_a life_n if_o a_o man_n have_v much_o sap_n within_o and_o no_o sign_n of_o it_o without_o it_o be_v certain_a it_o be_v no_o true_a faith_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o tree_n the_o tree_n that_o have_v much_o sap_n in_o the_o root_n will_v have_v much_o fruit_n in_o the_o branch_n and_o the_o more_o sap_n it_o have_v the_o more_o fruit_n it_o will_v have_v look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o floodgate_n the_o wide_a the_o sloud-gate_n be_v the_o great_a be_v the_o stream_n which_o come_v through_o it_o so_o be_v thy_o faith_n the_o faith_n of_o god_n elect_v than_o the_o more_o faith_n a_o man_n have_v to_o lay_v hold_n upon_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n the_o more_o sap_n and_o grace_n he_o will_v receive_v from_o christ_n and_o the_o great_a will_v be_v the_o stream_n of_o grace_n that_o will_v run_v out_o in_o all_o holy_a obedience_n to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n but_o when_o a_o man_n brag_v that_o he_o have_v much_o faith_n within_o yet_o if_o his_o conversation_n be_v without_o pith_n and_o savour_n it_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o conceit_n and_o a_o apprehension_n as_o for_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o life_n of_o christ_n this_o man_n never_o know_v it_o nor_o never_o have_v it_o the_o four_o and_o last_o sort_n be_v the_o counterfeit_n that_o have_v a_o forge_a kind_n of_o faith_n in_o such_o a_o manner_n that_o they_o will_v sometime_o be_v ready_a to_o cozen_v a_o holy_a judicious_a man_n and_o themselves_o too_o they_o exceed_v all_o the_o former_a and_o there_o be_v no_o dispute_v of_o the_o difference_n between_o those_o two_o that_o be_v past_a and_o this_o man_n that_o follow_v i_o tell_v you_o that_o he_o be_v a_o chynicall_a and_o a_o alchemy_n man_n and_o one_o that_o have_v something_o to_o say_v for_o himself_o he_o have_v the_o picture_n of_o faith_n draw_v marvellous_a curious_o and_o he_o have_v the_o appearance_n of_o some_o plea_n for_o himself_o and_o he_o have_v the_o resemblance_n of_o this_o bless_a work_n and_o that_o pretty_a lively_a too_o of_o these_o there_o be_v three_o sort_n one_o exceed_v the_o other_o in_o degree_n and_o yet_o all_o fall_v short_a of_o this_o bless_a work_n of_o faith_n first_o the_o temporary_a believer_n we_o take_v he_o as_o the_o low_a form_n a_o man_n be_v call_v a_o temporary_a bleever_n that_o believe_v for_o a_o time_n and_o be_v hot_a at_o first_o hand_n and_o admirable_a fierce_a in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o the_o truth_n for_o the_o present_a push_n but_o he_o slide_v off_o and_o go_v away_o and_o you_o shall_v see_v he_o no_o more_o now_o that_o we_o may_v deal_v home_o in_o the_o business_n for_o he_o that_o will_v search_v in_o a_o narrow_a case_n can_v do_v it_o sudden_o therefore_o suffer_v i_o to_o lay_v this_o man_n open_a in_o three_o particular_n first_o we_o will_v give_v he_o audience_n and_o hear_v what_o he_o can_v say_v for_o himself_o he_o shall_v come_v as_o it_o be_v into_o the_o open_a court_n and_o plead_v his_o own_o cause_n second_o i_o will_v show_v where_o he_o fail_v three_o give_v you_o the_o reason_n why_o he_o fall_v short_a for_o the_o first_o he_o shall_v discover_v it_o himself_o and_o for_o the_o second_o the_o word_n shall_v lay_v it_o open_a and_o for_o the_o three_o i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o and_o what_o he_o be_v for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o let_v the_o temporary_a speak_v in_o his_o own_o language_n and_o put_v his_o plea_n in_o his_o own_o behalf_n and_o give_v he_o but_o a_o fair_a hear_n and_o you_o shall_v have_v thus_o much_o of_o he_o he_o profess_v clear_o that_o he_o have_v not_o only_o as_o the_o judicious_a man_n have_v a_o apprehension_n of_o the_o truth_n only_o and_o a_o assent_n that_o the_o scripture_n be_v clear_a and_o true_a but_o he_o say_v thus_o much_o that_o his_o affection_n be_v carry_v on_o in_o a_o kind_n of_o longing_n after_o it_o and_o they_o be_v take_v aside_o and_o stir_v by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o both_o his_o heart_n and_o affection_n have_v a_o relish_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n word_n this_o be_v his_o profession_n and_o he_o will_v make_v it_o good_a to_o you_o too_o this_o come_v something_o near_o faith_n and_o there_o be_v some_o colour_n for_o he_o to_o plead_v that_o he_o have_v some_o confidence_n in_o god_n there_o be_v three_o thing_n in_o scripture_n that_o he_o say_v for_o himself_o as_o luke_n 8.13_o the_o stony_a ground_n there_o be_v the_o temporary_a and_o the_o text_n say_v two_o thing_n of_o he_o that_o he_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n and_o believe_v for_o a_o time_n these_o two_o thing_n be_v there_o aver_v and_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o this_o man_n the_o receive_n of_o the_o word_n with_o joy_n be_v the_o tickle_a of_o the_o affection_n with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o his_o believe_a be_v not_o only_o a_o bare_a assent_n to_o the_o truth_n but_o a_o work_n of_o the_o will_n in_o a_o kind_n of_o hourlinesse_n in_o application_n these_o fall_v short_a of_o the_o spiritual_a work_n namely_o thus_o when_o the_o treasure_n of_o wisdom_n and_o holiness_n be_v lay_v open_a before_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o poor_a sinner_n and_o when_o the_o unsearchable_a riches_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n be_v let_v in_o and_o come_v home_o to_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o stony_a ground_n hearer_n the_o will_n be_v tickle_v therewith_o and_o his_o inward_a man_n be_v stir_v and_o bedew_v hourly_o with_o the_o sweetness_n thereof_o this_o be_v the_o believe_a for_o a_o time_n john_n 15.35_o our_o saviour_n say_v john_n be_v a_o burn_a and_o a_o shine_a light_n and_o you_o be_v willing_a for_o a_o season_n to_o have_v rejoice_v in_o his_o but_o when_o it_o begin_v to_o scorch_v than_o they_o will_v hear_v he_o no_o more_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o those_o temporary_n that_o fly_v off_o from_o christ_n john_n 6.34_o when_o christ_n tell_v they_o that_o moses_n give_v they_o not_o that_o bread_n from_o heaven_n but_o my_o father_n give_v you_o the_o true_a bread_n from_o heaven_n for_o the_o true_a bread_n be_v he_o which_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n and_o give_v life_n to_o the_o world_n and_o they_o say_v lord_n evermore_o give_v we_o this_o bread_n but_o they_o that_o will_v ever_o have_v of_o this_o bread_n they_o soon_o after_o vomit_v he_o up_o again_o and_o say_v this_o be_v a_o hard_a say_n who_o can_v bear_v it_o the_o second_o instance_n of_o scripture_n be_v this_o heb._n 6.4_o 5._o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o those_o that_o be_v once_o enlighten_v and_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o heavenly_a gift_n and_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v etc._n etc._n this_o be_v such_o a_o kind_n of_o taste_n as_o may_v be_v and_o be_v in_o such_o a_o man_n as_o shall_v never_o have_v share_n in_o life_n and_o salvation_n as_o the_o apostle_n afterward_o make_v it_o clear_a the_o heavenly_a gift_n be_v the_o grace_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o good_a word_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v the_o goodness_n of_o the_o word_n i_o will_v open_v myself_o thus_o observe_v that_o this_o taste_n can_v be_v the_o taste_n of_o the_o understanding_n proper_o for_o if_o he_o be_v once_o enlighten_v and_o have_v believe_v natural_o if_o it_o be_v in_o my_o power_n to_o go_v to_o christ_n when_o i_o listen_v why_o shall_v i_o use_v all_o mean_n and_o receive_v ability_n to_o do_v that_o which_o i_o can_v do_v by_o my_o own_o power_n and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v one_o main_a ground_n why_o the_o endeavour_n of_o man_n be_v take_v off_o from_o attend_v and_o why_o the_o labour_n of_o christian_n be_v take_v off_o from_o seek_v often_o this_o bless_a precious_a grace_n of_o faith_n there_o be_v many_o ground_n why_o man_n be_v drive_v to_o this_o kind_n of_o conceit_n there_o be_v many_o reason_n that_o make_v way_n for_o this_o conceit_n as_o first_o to_o believe_v be_v a_o spiritual_a thing_n between_o god_n and_o thy_o own_o soul_n to_o pray_v and_o reform_v belong_v to_o the_o outward_a practice_n but_o to_o believe_v be_v a_o closure_n of_o the_o heart_n with_o a_o entertain_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o truth_n and_o the_o give_a way_n of_o our_o soul_n thereunto_o now_o because_o man_n can_v see_v their_o faith_n therefore_o no_o man_n will_v yield_v but_o he_o do_v believe_v second_o man_n conceive_v that_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o take_v of_o mercy_n from_o christ_n and_o say_v they_o be_v there_o any_o man_n that_o will_v not_o have_v mercy_n be_v it_o such_o a_o hard_a matter_n to_o receive_v favour_n offer_v or_o to_o take_v a_o gift_n when_o it_o be_v tender_v unto_o we_o three_o these_o do_v apprehend_v that_o the_o assent_v to_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n wherein_o be_v reveal_v the_o riches_n of_o god_n mercy_n be_v all_o that_o be_v they_o acknowledge_v and_o assent_v to_o the_o truth_n and_o conceive_v this_o be_v whole_a to_o believe_v upon_o this_o ground_n poor_a creature_n think_v it_o be_v in_o their_o power_n to_o believe_v and_o take_v grace_n and_o help_v from_o christ_n though_o they_o can_v help_v themselves_o therefore_o they_o labour_v not_o to_o get_v grace_n from_o god_n to_o do_v this_o work_n because_o they_o think_v they_o can_v perform_v this_o work_n by_o their_o own_o ability_n and_o power_n the_o cure_n of_o this_o hindrance_n be_v this_o and_o it_o lie_v special_o in_o these_o three_o meditation_n first_o see_v thyself_o and_o convince_v thy_o own_o heart_n how_o thou_o be_v cozen_v and_o thy_o conscience_n how_o thou_o be_v deceive_v in_o common_a sense_n when_o such_o thought_n creep_v into_o thy_o mind_n and_o reason_n thus_o be_v it_o in_o my_o power_n alone_o to_o believe_v or_o in_o any_o man_n power_n else_o will_v any_o man_n go_v to_o hell_n for_o want_n of_o believe_v if_o it_o be_v in_o my_o power_n or_o any_o man_n power_n else_o to_o get_v faith_n will_v any_o man_n perish_v for_o want_v of_o faith_n take_v a_o little_a experience_n from_o those_o that_o lie_v on_o their_o death_n bed_n a_o riotous_a wretch_n that_o have_v run_v headlong_o against_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o truth_n a_o man_n that_o have_v live_v stubborn_o and_o stout_o under_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n and_o have_v take_v up_o arm_n against_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n he_o lie_v gasp_v and_o then_o he_o look_v to_o heaven_n and_o consider_v what_o shall_v become_v of_o he_o the_o minister_n say_v he_o must_v renounce_v himself_o and_o apply_v christ_n and_o his_o promise_n to_o his_o soul_n oh_o say_v he_o i_o can_v believe_v the_o lord_n will_v save_v i_o and_o pardon_v i_o and_o comfort_v i_o i_o can_v rest_v upon_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n what_o i_o such_o a_o sinner_n and_o save_v what_o i_o such_o a_o sinner_n and_o comfort_v i_o can_v believe_v it_o if_o all_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n tell_v it_o i_o be_v it_o in_o this_o man_n power_n to_o believe_v now_o when_o he_o see_v hell_n open_a before_o he_o and_o the_o devil_n ready_a to_o receive_v he_o do_v you_o think_v he_o will_v rush_v into_o hell_n if_o he_o can_v believe_v and_o escape_v it_o second_o look_v into_o the_o depth_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n and_o weigh_v serious_o thou_o own_o can_v go_v up_o to_o heaven_n again_o faith_n must_v be_v first_o wrought_v in_o thy_o soul_n before_o thou_o can_v be_v carry_v to_o god_n by_o faith_n there_o must_v be_v a_o power_n in_o all_o mean_n above_o all_o mean_n there_o must_v be_v a_o spirit_n in_o all_o endeavour_n above_o all_o endeavour_n to_o help_v we_o to_o believe_v or_o else_o we_o shall_v never_o believe_v while_o the_o world_n stand_v therefore_o avoid_v those_o proud_a imagination_n of_o heart_n when_o man_n think_v they_o may_v refuse_v grace_n &_o take_v grace_n when_o they_o listen_v shut_v christ_n out_o of_o door_n over_o night_n and_o take_v he_o in_o the_o morning_n it_o be_v against_o sense_n and_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o cross_a and_o contrary_a to_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n no_o go_v secret_o between_o god_n and_o thy_o own_o soul_n and_o confute_v it_o what_o i_o lord_n and_o my_o part_n lord_n what_o in_o my_o will_n lord_n to_o believe_v and_o in_o my_o power_n and_o so_o forth_o no_o if_o all_o man_n and_o angel_n shall_v conspire_v together_o and_o all_o the_o minister_n under_o heaven_n join_v together_o to_o work_v faith_n in_o my_o soul_n it_o will_v never_o be_v the_o power_n do_v not_o look_v to_o expect_v any_o power_n or_o any_o principle_n from_o itself_o or_o any_o creature_n or_o any_o duty_n the_o soul_n of_o a_o humble_a sinner_n know_v he_o be_v a_o dead_a man_n come_v from_o faith_n first_o believe_v and_o then_o have_v joy_n do_v not_o think_v to_o have_v joy_n and_o then_o believe_v the_o heart_n be_v fill_v with_o peace_n and_o joy_n not_o before_o believe_v but_o by_o believe_v and_o after_o believe_v then_o rejoice_v with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a when_o faith_n be_v root_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o have_v have_v many_o sunshine_n of_o god_n favour_n upon_o it_o then_o expect_v those_o admirable_a ravishment_n and_o sweet_a consolation_n which_o the_o word_n speak_v of_o and_o thou_o may_v obtain_v second_o these_o joy_n and_o sense_n and_o feeling_n be_v thing_n which_o may_v be_v separate_v from_o faith_n a_o man_n may_v have_v a_o good_a faith_n and_o a_o strong_a faith_n and_o yet_o not_o have_v that_o comfort_n and_o sweet_a refreshment_n a_o sinner_n look_v for_o and_o desire_n a_o man_n may_v want_v spark_n and_o yet_o want_v neither_o life_n nor_o heat_n a_o tree_n may_v want_v leaf_n and_o yet_o not_o want_v sap_n so_o it_o be_v with_o those_o consolation_n faith_n may_v be_v strong_a when_o a_o man_n feeling_n may_v be_v nothing_o restore_v to_o i_o the_o joy_n of_o thy_o salvation_n say_v david_n he_o be_v justify_v and_o sanctify_v and_o have_v faith_n and_o yet_o have_v not_o this_o joy_n nay_o job_n have_v faith_n and_o yet_o he_o have_v no_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o god_n favour_n thou_o
