they_o also_o for_o this_o for_o thereby_o they_o prove_v their_o own_o error_n and_o confirm_v my_o truth_n i_o have_v this_o one_o thing_n more_o only_o to_o trouble_v the_o reader_n with_o the_o first_o of_o my_o three_o sermon_n on_o that_o text_n search_v the_o scripture_n be_v preach_v in_o september_n 1677_o and_o in_o june_n 1678._o come_v out_o a_o little_a book_n to_o the_o same_o intent_n of_o that_o sermon_n express_v several_a thing_n in_o it_o and_o in_o the_o very_a same_o manner_n by_o what_o mean_v i_o know_v not_o but_o this_o i_o and_o many_o other_o know_v that_o my_o learn_v from_o the_o apostle_n st._n jude_n who_o command_v we_o to_o contend_v for_o the_o faith_n once_o deliver_v to_o the_o saint_n once_o for_o all_o the_o faith_n which_o be_v deliver_v by_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n once_o to_o remain_v to_o all_o future_a generation_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o all_o mankind_n which_o faith_n be_v contain_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o write_v there_o for_o our_o learning_n as_o the_o scripture_n itself_o tell_v we_o search_v therefore_o the_o scripture_n for_o it_o for_o in_o they_o you_o have_v eternal_a life_n in_o these_o word_n we_o have_v two_o thing_n set_v forth_o unto_o we_o first_o a_o command_n second_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o command_n the_o command_n to_o search_v the_o scripture_n then_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o command_n for_o in_o the_o scripture_n we_o have_v eternal_a life_n both_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o plain_a in_o themselves_o that_o they_o need_v no_o explication_n but_o the_o perverse_a wit_n of_o evil_a man_n who_o can_v find_v nodum_fw-la in_o scirpo_fw-la have_v invent_v some_o difficulty_n in_o they_o to_o excuse_v their_o pernicious_a practice_n clean_o contrary_a to_o they_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o romish_a church_n guilty_a of_o such_o practice_n have_v invent_v these_o difficulty_n for_o they_o have_v many_o thing_n in_o their_o church_n devotion_n quite_o contrary_a to_o scripture_n as_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o ere_o this_o business_n be_v end_v find_v it_o necessary_a to_o shut_v up_o the_o scripture_n from_o the_o laity_n who_o will_v not_o so_o blind_o be_v seduce_v into_o they_o have_v they_o the_o light_n of_o holy_a scripture_n to_o discover_v the_o grossness_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o first_o they_o will_v have_v it_o that_o this_o command_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o search_v the_o scripture_n belong_v only_o to_o the_o clergy_n and_o they_o be_v to_o teach_v the_o people_n out_o
great_a example_n and_o leader_n to_o piety_n and_o godly_a life_n but_o i_o say_v it_o only_o to_o prevent_v our_o be_v lead_v into_o error_n by_o their_o authority_n who_o though_o they_o be_v very_o learned_a and_o godly_a man_n yet_o still_o be_v man_n and_o be_v man_n be_v subject_a to_o error_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n no_o assurance_n can_v be_v have_v in_o the_o word_n of_o man_n but_o these_o miracle_n which_o they_o pretend_v to_o be_v wrought_v at_o the_o image_n of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n and_o other_o saint_n be_v apparent_o contrary_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n will_v bold_o deny_v it_o and_o find_v we_o too_o strong_o fortify_v with_o scripture_n truth_n to_o be_v seduce_v by_o their_o supposititious_a saint_n with_o their_o lie_a wonder_n and_o too_o quick-sighted_a to_o be_v catch_v with_o such_o stalk_a horse_n they_o come_v upon_o we_o with_o a_o whole_a army_n of_o the_o church_n militant_a the_o universal_a catholic_n church_n mean_v the_o romish_a church_n false_o so_o call_v yea_o and_o back_v with_o scripture_n too_o and_o so_o fight_v we_o at_o our_o own_o weapon_n and_o thence_o thunder_v out_o irresistible_a cannon_n shoot_v he_o that_o will_v not_o hear_v the_o church_n let_v he_o be_v unto_o thou_o as_o a_o heathen_a man_n and_o a_o publican_n matt._n xviii_o 17._o belove_a my_o time_n will_v fail_v i_o shall_v i_o now_o unfortunate_a day_n but_o if_o they_o can_v find_v any_o such_o let_v they_o desire_v his_o assistance_n and_o if_o this_o godly_a person_n can_v by_o other_o plain_a place_n of_o scripture_n and_o clear_a reason_n make_v the_o sense_n of_o that_o doubtful_a place_n evident_a to_o his_o understanding_n than_o he_o may_v well_o conclude_v that_o to_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o if_o this_o godly_a counsellor_n make_v use_v of_o any_o human_a authority_n that_o be_v any_o one_o or_o many_o father_n of_o the_o church_n or_o council_n or_o the_o like_a to_o make_v good_a his_o exposition_n and_o can_v do_v it_o by_o clear_a place_n of_o scripture_n or_o such_o circumstance_n as_o make_v that_o doubtful_a place_n clear_a to_o your_o understanding_n but_o require_v you_o to_o submit_v mere_o to_o their_o authority_n than_o you_o be_v to_o afford_v he_o no_o more_o than_o a_o human_a belief_n which_o help_v you_o nothing_o forward_o to_o your_o salvation_n for_o that_o whole_o depend_v on_o divine_a faith_n and_o belief_n in_o god_n not_o in_o man_n as_o i_o have_v show_v you_o and_o as_o for_o the_o doubtful_a place_n pass_v they_o over_o as_o doubtful_a and_o the_o clear_a knowledge_n thereof_o not_o necessary_a to_o your_o salvation_n god_n require_v of_o no_o man_n beyond_o the_o talon_n which_o he_o have_v give_v he_o and_o in_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n have_v so_o provide_v that_o all_o thing_n necessary_a for_o salvation_n may_v be_v understand_v of_o all_o what_o can_v be_v more_o plain_o set_v forth_o to_o common_a
