conclude_v their_o estate_n to_o be_v so_o high_a that_o they_o be_v at_o rest_n in_o god_n when_o they_o be_v cover_v with_o a_o cover_n but_o not_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o though_o the_o heart_n be_v put_v god_n in_o the_o forefront_n of_o its_o act_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o jehues_n deceit_n and_o treachery_n of_o spirit_n second_o i_o labour_v to_o un-deceive_a it_o that_o though_o it_o have_v attain_v any_o or_o all_o these_o seventeen_o and_o have_v not_o have_v a_o appearance_n of_o christ_n spiritual_o in_o they_o so_o that_o they_o know_v when_o and_o how_o and_o what_o christ_n infallible_o be_v that_o still_o that_o soul_n be_v but_o yet_o in_o a_o changeable_a condition_n and_o it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v satan_n transforming_n in_o he_o as_o any_o dispensation_n of_o god_n to_o he_o and_o to_o let_v the_o creature_n know_v that_o though_o he_o have_v pass_v through_o all_o this_o yet_o he_o want_v one_o thing_n to_o be_v his_o rest_n and_o centre_n which_o when_o it_o come_v will_v discover_v the_o truth_n of_o all_o these_o dispensation_n and_o if_o they_o be_v of_o god_n they_o shall_v be_v dissolve_v if_o they_o be_v of_o self_n or_o satan_n they_o shall_v be_v destroy_v so_o that_o to_o unbottom_n creature_n that_o they_o live_v not_o upon_o vanity_n and_o lie_n and_o that_o they_o may_v not_o rest_n before_o the_o true_a appearance_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o spirit_n i_o have_v set_v forth_o these_o imperfect_a line_n far_o i_o will_v not_o have_v any_o think_v that_o i_o deny_v scripture_n ordinance_n christ_n come_v in_o the_o flesh_n
kingdom_n after_o death_n or_o any_o thing_n here_o i_o have_v insert_v to_o be_v false_a rest_n but_o that_o i_o aim_v at_o be_v to_o set_v all_o thing_n in_o its_o proper_a place_n and_o to_o bring_v soul_n to_o see_v the_o true_a centre_n that_o they_o may_v not_o miss_v the_o one_o thing_n necessary_a while_o they_o be_v act_v beyond_o their_o line_n in_o which_o act_n themselves_o may_v the_o form_n of_o word_n in_o the_o letter_n or_o promise_n be_v the_o rest_n of_o saint_n but_o he_o who_o be_v the_o sum_n and_o substance_n of_o all_o viz._n christ_n in_o the_o spirit_n come_v in_o we_o to_o be_v life_n glory_n light_n and_o happiness_n to_o we_o and_o so_o a_o hope_n of_o glory_n in_o we_o this_o be_v the_o rest_n of_o saint_n but_o christian_a reader_n god_n now_o in_o these_o day_n be_v discover_v the_o false_a cover_n of_o creature_n and_o so_o strip_v they_o naked_a god_n be_v bring_v man_n to_o see_v this_o great_a mystery_n of_o self_n in_o all_o its_o glory_n he_o be_v annihilate_v creature_n and_o bring_v they_o to_o a_o spiritual_a death_n he_o be_v lay_v low_a mountain_n and_o unbottoming_a and_o un-resting_a creature_n man_n lofty_a look_n he_o be_v abase_v yea_o he_o be_v bring_v man_n who_o have_v be_v star_n and_o something_o in_o their_o own_o and_o other_o eye_n even_o to_o a_o loss_n and_o silence_n confusion_n and_o darkness_n that_o now_o their_o light_n be_v darkness_n their_o wisdom_n folly_n their_o life_n death_n their_o enlargement_n and_o self-actings_a hedge_v up_o and_o they_o can_v find_v out_o any_o of_o their_o former_a path_n so_o that_o now_o they_o be_v make_v to_o wait_v in_o silence_n as_o well_o as_o the_o author_n of_o this_o book_n be_v force_v to_o do_v and_o it_o may_v be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n that_o this_o particular_a shall_v be_v a_o instrument_n of_o good_a as_o well_o in_o this_o as_o it_o have_v be_v before_o iâ—_n come_v in_o this_o public_a view_n to_o many_o soul_n in_o another_o manner_n that_o be_v look_v upon_o the_o grossness_n of_o man_n action_n abroad_o in_o the_o world_n as_o namely_o swear_v and_o drunkenness_n and_o the_o height_n of_o all_o profane_v many_o spirit_n live_v in_o where_o they_o be_v in_o the_o same_o condion_fw-la drink_v up_o iniquity_n as_o if_o they_o be_v drink_v up_o water_n and_o in_o these_o particular_n he_o be_v restrain_v and_o more_o civilise_v condition_n thus_o not_o see_v the_o purity_n of_o god_n and_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o its_o own_o spirit_n within_o he_o compare_v himself_o with_o himself_o be_v deceive_v and_o so_o rest_v satisfy_v 3._o it_o flow_v from_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o greatness_n of_o love_n he_o have_v before_o be_v restrain_v to_o those_o gross_a evil_n he_o be_v restrain_v from_o together_o with_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o power_n which_o he_o call_v the_o divine_a power_n of_o god_n which_o thus_o restrain_v he_o and_o thus_o he_o reason_n if_o god_n do_v not_o high_o love_v i_o i_o seem_a sorrow_n which_o arise_v continual_o upon_o the_o view_n of_o his_o former_a condition_n which_o work_v a_o seem_a repentance_n and_o reformation_n and_o from_o the_o sorrow_n he_o have_v for_o his_o former_a condition_n now_o have_v a_o work_n of_o reformation_n he_o rest_v under_o the_o notion_n of_o happiness_n yet_o not_o all_o this_o time_n bring_v home_o to_o see_v the_o grossness_n of_o his_o heart_n within_o but_o mere_o wash_v the_o outside_n luke_n 11._o 39_o and_o be_v a_o white_v wall_n glorious_a without_o it_o be_v all_o he_o look_v for_o or_o seek_v after_o but_o satan_n and_o man_n heart_n will_v suffer_v the_o creature_n to_o act_v so_o far_o and_o propound_v such_o way_n to_o himself_o as_o in_o the_o same_o to_o bring_v the_o soul_n into_o a_o state_n of_o the_o world_n who_o be_v not_o spiritual_a discoverer_n but_o alas_o what_o be_v it_o for_o any_o to_o be_v instrument_n to_o pull_v down_o or_o to_o be_v restrainer_n from_o idolatry_n without_o when_o indeed_o there_o be_v remain_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o idolatry_n of_o spirit_n within_o to_o be_v outward_o drink_v no_o more_o and_o yet_o to_o be_v drink_v with_o the_o high_a conceit_n of_o himself_o which_o be_v neither_o with_o wine_n nor_o strong_a drink_n its_o worse_o for_o a_o man_n to_o have_v the_o branch_n break_v down_o before_o the_o root_n be_v pull_v up_o for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v seem_o a_o saint_n &_o a_o devil_n within_o in_o this_o estate_n there_o be_v no_o sure_a rest_n but_o thus_o it_o be_v most_o common_o with_o man_n they_o conclude_v they_o be_v happy_a if_o they_o have_v but_o the_o least_o appearance_n of_o it_o in_o a_o visible_a restrain_v of_o they_o from_o gross_a evil_n and_o in_o this_o they_o appear_v to_o themselves_o and_o other_o man_n reform_v and_o so_o new_a creature_n when_o indeed_o they_o be_v still_o in_o their_o blood_n though_o they_o have_v escape_v the_o common_a pollution_n of_o the_o world_n through_o a_o general_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v no_o sure_a cause_n of_o rest_n until_o there_o be_v a_o particular_a knowledge_n of_o he_o by_o which_o the_o creature_n be_v cleanse_v from_o all_o pollution_n both_o of_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n which_o make_v the_o heart_n upright_o before_o god_n from_o this_o inward_a knowledge_n of_o god_n which_o carry_v up_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o spiritual_a man_n into_o god_n where_o he_o come_v to_o be_v true_o centre_v up_o in_o god_n so_o that_o the_o heart_n and_o satan_n be_v deceitful_a as_o to_o suffer_v the_o creature_n to_o escape_v the_o common_a pollution_n of_o the_o world_n so_o that_o it_o may_v but_o there_o keep_v the_o creature_n and_o see_v in_o this_o estate_n of_o darkness_n none_o can_v true_o judge_v of_o its_o condition_n aright_o until_o the_o true_a light_n come_v in_o which_o make_v all_o thing_n manifest_v then_o it_o behoove_v soul_n in_o this_o estate_n though_o to_o themselves_o never_o so_o seem_o glorious_a not_o to_o rest_n satisfy_v with_o or_o content_v itself_o in_o it_o as_o though_o it_o do_v enjoy_v god_n in_o the_o same_o manifest_v but_o to_o wait_v for_o a_o high_a dispensation_n and_o then_o the_o truth_n
a_o poor_a rest_n yet_o thus_o it_o be_v man_n by_o abundance_n of_o pain_n and_o diligence_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o in_o book_n do_v get_v abundance_n of_o knowledge_n and_o after_o it_o be_v get_v they_o rest_v upon_o the_o same_o as_o though_o it_o be_v to_o enjoy_v the_o manifestation_n of_o god_n to_o enjoy_v much_o knowledge_n here_o they_o abuse_v a_o dispensation_n of_o god_n and_o transform_v it_o into_o another_o use_n then_o ever_o god_n ordain_v it_o for_o so_o that_o though_o a_o man_n have_v never_o so_o much_o knowledge_n yet_o though_o his_o knowledge_n be_v according_a to_o or_o attain_v in_o the_o scripture_n if_o he_o rest_v there_o before_o he_o have_v get_v it_o in_o the_o heart_n by_o experience_n as_o he_o have_v get_v it_o in_o the_o head_n for_o discourse_n his_o rest_n be_v much_o below_o the_o substance_n of_o truth_n for_o no_o man_n be_v to_o rest_v in_o any_o thing_n without_o he_o so_o know_v until_o it_o be_v within_o he_o and_o then_o he_o rest_v not_o in_o god_n because_o declare_v in_o scripture_n but_o upon_o god_n because_o reveal_v and_o experience_v in_o he_o and_o so_o be_v full_o know_v by_o he_o the_o three_o way_n whereby_o this_o knowledge_n come_v to_o be_v attain_v be_v from_o the_o declaring_n of_o the_o experience_n of_o other_o he_o by_o the_o same_o store_v himself_o with_o point_n of_o experience_n as_o well_o as_o point_n of_o judgement_n and_o here_o he_o can_v speak_v all_o manner_n of_o language_n as_o well_o as_o those_o that_o enjoy_v truth_n in_o they_o so_o that_o he_o can_v speak_v of_o point_n of_o judgement_n with_o those_o that_o be_v for_o that_o discourse_n and_o point_n of_o experience_n with_o those_o that_o be_v for_o that_o have_v a_o form_n of_o both_o in_o his_o understanding_n and_o from_o that_o be_v able_a to_o make_v out_o himself_o as_o those_o who_o sweet_o in_o the_o power_n of_o truth_n enjoy_v god_n but_o for_o this_o latter_a he_o have_v but_o steal_v the_o word_n from_o his_o neighbour_n he_o have_v get_v his_o experience_n to_o discourse_v of_o and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a deceit_n of_o man_n spirit_n in_o our_o day_n for_o when_o they_o hear_v of_o a_o precious_a high_a truth_n of_o god_n which_o they_o never_o hear_v of_o before_o they_o either_o oppose_v it_o or_o else_o they_o get_v the_o form_n of_o it_o into_o their_o notion_n or_o understanding_n and_o the_o next_o upportunity_n they_o have_v they_o declare_v it_o â—â—_o their_o own_o whereas_o though_o they_o be_v convince_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o yet_o they_o be_v to_o wait_v for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o power_n of_o it_o in_o themselves_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v seal_v by_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o 1_o cor._n 4._o 19_o 20._o but_o many_o conceive_v if_o they_o can_v but_o remember_v a_o truth_n though_o they_o have_v it_o not_o in_o the_o power_n of_o it_o in_o themselves_o that_o the_o very_o believe_v of_o it_o and_o assent_v to_o it_o be_v the_o experience_n of_o it_o and_o these_o be_v those_o who_o have_v a_o form_n of_o god_n or_o the_o truth_n in_o their_o understanding_n and_o wanâ—_n the_o power_n of_o that_o truth_n in_o their_o spirit_n and_o so_o many_o a_o soul_n rest_v in_o this_o very_a part_n of_o knowledge_n now_o the_o reason_n of_o a_o soul_n rest_v here_o be_v partly_o these_o follow_v first_o from_o a_o comparison_n make_v in_o his_o own_o spirit_n with_o other_o that_o be_v in_o low_a dispensation_n or_o weak_a in_o knowledge_n or_o discourse_n then_o himself_o but_o especial_o professor_n who_o live_v in_o high_a thought_n of_o their_o estate_n and_o he_o thus_o compare_v his_o condition_n with_o they_o and_o see_v it_o so_o far_o excel_v they_o make_v his_o conclusion_n if_o their_o condition_n be_v happy_a then_o i_o be_v much_o more_o in_o respect_n of_o what_o i_o have_v enjoy_v more_o than_o they_o i_o be_o not_o any_o way_n inferior_a to_o any_o almost_o sure_o i_o be_o in_o a_o happy_a estate_n if_o any_o the_o second_o reason_n follow_v from_o the_o high_a estimation_n other_o have_v of_o he_o especial_o man_n of_o the_o rare_a ability_n and_o solid_a judgement_n and_o this_o add_v fuel_n to_o his_o fire_n of_o conceit_n and_o make_v his_o rest_n the_o more_o glorious_a and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o if_o at_o any_o time_n the_o approbation_n of_o those_o cease_v to_o be_v what_o it_o be_v that_o it_o occasion_n much_o distraction_n and_o want_n of_o peace_n within_o himself_o for_o when_o part_n of_o a_o man_n cause_n of_o rest_n and_o peace_n be_v take_v away_o no_o marvel_n then_o if_o part_n of_o his_o rest_n and_o peace_n go_v along_o with_o it_o whereas_o he_o that_o rest_v in_o god_n be_v free_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o be_v as_o mount_n and_o obey_v it_o and_o make_v a_o large_a profession_n of_o it_o yet_o if_o he_o enjoy_v not_o god_n in_o that_o very_a thing_n it_o be_v but_o a_o dispensation_n below_o the_o power_n of_o truth_n so_o that_o we_o see_v here_o that_o man_n may_v get_v thing_n into_o the_o head_n before_o they_o be_v in_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o they_o in_o the_o heart_n which_o if_o rest_v upon_o bring_v with_o it_o a_o dangerous_a consequence_n as_o 1._o it_o be_v the_o way_n to_o a_o high_a security_n and_o such_o a_o security_n be_v but_o carnal_a as_o be_v not_o without_o ground_n it_o be_v the_o way_n in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o a_o self-glorying_a and_o creature_n exalt_v and_o to_o the_o displace_n of_o god_n three_o it_o be_v the_o way_n to_o fall_v into_o all_o manner_n of_o looseness_n under_o pretence_n of_o freedom_n and_o knowledge_n of_o truth_n and_o that_o it_o be_v no_o sin_n though_o it_o do_v this_o or_o that_o for_o no_o marvel_n when_o a_o man_n have_v no_o more_o than_o a_o form_n of_o god_n in_o the_o head_n and_o want_v the_o power_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n then_o that_o soul_n fall_v into_o a_o carnal_a looseness_n whereby_o truth_n be_v evil_a speak_v of_o and_o the_o party_n thus_o do_v justify_v his_o action_n by_o his_o hardness_n of_o spirit_n which_o by_o it_o he_o be_v bring_v into_o and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o increase_n in_o knowledge_n he_o daily_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n be_v daily_o more_o establish_v on_o his_o own_o bottom_n though_o not_o so_o think_v by_o himself_o this_o daily_a increase_n of_o knowledge_n in_o himself_o the_o benefit_n that_o sometime_o be_v redound_v to_o other_o by_o that_o do_v increase_v the_o flame_n and_o add_v fuel_n to_o the_o fire_n of_o this_o false_a rest_n the_o second_o excellent_a part_n or_o gift_n upon_o which_o man_n rest_v be_v prayer_n and_o this_o be_v make_v a_o idol_n of_o by_o such_o party_n who_o rest_v upon_o it_o but_o first_o of_o all_o when_o a_o man_n set_v his_o face_n towards_o god_n it_o will_v glad_o pray_v but_o want_v this_o proper_a gift_n it_o use_v form_n but_o after_o it_o see_v the_o vanity_n of_o that_o dispensation_n and_o the_o emptiness_n of_o it_o it_o now_o will_v glad_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o continual_o be_v complain_v for_o want_n of_o matter_n

light_n in_o external_a form_n which_o be_v there_o require_v to_o be_v obey_v so_o as_o he_o may_v gather_v church_n and_o may_v suffer_v much_o in_o the_o conform_v to_o and_o practise_v with_o so_o much_o vehemency_n the_o ordinance_n common_o practise_v by_o the_o church_n in_o the_o apostle_n and_o our_o day_n so_o as_o his_o zeal_n may_v lead_v he_o out_o to_o teach_v and_o help_v forward_o that_o work_n study_v night_n and_o day_n to_o find_v out_o matter_n to_o furnish_v himself_o for_o edification_n so_o as_o for_o pain_n in_o the_o church_n and_o for_o zeal_n to_o observe_v the_o severity_n of_o those_o form_n and_o any_o thing_n require_v to_o be_v practise_v in_o the_o say_a church_n so_o as_o now_o it_o will_v have_v communion_n in_o ordinance_n with_o none_o but_o those_o of_o his_o own_o stamp_n &_o judgement_n be_v mighty_o carry_v forth_o to_o judge_n and_o pity_v those_o who_o be_v opposer_n of_o that_o light_n now_o this_o soul_n through_o zeal_n may_v go_v thus_o far_o yea_o to_o act_v up_o to_o the_o high_a thing_n the_o scripture_n do_v require_v in_o matter_n of_o visible_a practice_n and_o yet_o be_v not_o at_o all_o teach_v in_o the_o spirit_n neither_o get_v into_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o what_o he_o do_v profess_v but_o mere_o zealous_a for_o shadow_n and_o want_v the_o power_n so_o as_o he_o be_v command_v by_o the_o form_n and_o not_o the_o form_n by_o the_o power_n dwell_v within_o he_o now_o grant_v far_o that_o such_o a_o soul_n do_v act_n in_o truth_n according_a to_o this_o dispensation_n yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o this_o particular_a there_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o rest_n for_o nothing_o visible_o see_v flow_v from_o the_o creature_n aught_o to_o be_v its_o rest_n but_o some_o invisible_a flow_n into_o the_o creature_n which_o be_v be_v and_o substance_n from_o which_o and_o unto_o which_o a_o soul_n through_o zeal_n for_o god_n act_n also_o a_o creature_n thus_o zealous_a rest_v not_o at_o home_n but_o reform_v abroad_o also_o beginning_n with_o his_o own_o family_n and_o so_o go_v abroad_o to_o other_o and_o labour_n for_o a_o reformation_n and_o practice_n the_o same_o with_o much_o zeal_n so_o as_o he_o can_v not_o endure_v the_o visible_a appearance_n of_o any_o sin_n in_o himself_o or_o other_o he_o may_v help_v with_o much_o zeal_n the_o purge_n of_o city_n and_o nation_n of_o drunkenness_n or_o swear_v or_o any_o open_a prophanesse_n he_o may_v be_v for_o punish_v of_o evil_a doer_n in_o this_o particular_a with_o much_o severity_n and_o seem_v to_o be_v much_o trouble_v at_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o he_o may_v rejoice_v much_o in_o this_o practice_n and_o may_v help_v forward_o this_o work_n in_o a_o nation_n very_o much_o and_o yet_o this_o no_o rest_n at_o all_o also_o he_o may_v be_v zealous_a yea_o mad_a of_o zeal_n for_o the_o worship_n of_o his_o god_n in_o reference_n unto_o other_o not_o only_o take_v all_o opportunity_n to_o inform_v they_o in_o the_o same_o but_o use_v all_o coercive_a power_n for_o confirm_v they_o thereunto_o so_o as_o he_o may_v be_v a_o instrument_n to_o bring_v family_n and_o most_o part_n of_o city_n into_o this_o outward_a conformity_n to_o the_o matter_n of_o worship_n and_o here_o he_o look_v upon_o a_o action_n do_v of_o great_a moment_n and_o weight_n and_o partly_o make_v this_o a_o evidence_n of_o his_o true_a enjoyment_n of_o god_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o zeal_n for_o god_n and_o the_o effect_n thereby_o produce_v which_o be_v the_o good_a of_o many_o now_o the_o cause_n of_o a_o soul_n thus_o rest_a partly_o flow_v from_o want_n of_o the_o information_n in_o judgement_n of_o the_o great_a deceit_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o put_v man_n by_o zeal_n upon_o such_o public_a action_n and_o then_o to_o cause_v it_o to_o rest_n and_o further_o it_o conceive_v its_o zeal_n for_o god_n and_o from_o a_o principle_n of_o god_n not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o a_o pharisaical_a zeal_n to_o be_v seâ—n_v of_o man_n or_o to_o get_v a_o name_n among_o man_n or_o that_o zeal_n which_o man_n have_v but_o not_o according_a to_o knowledge_n or_o the_o zeal_n paul_n have_v before_o conversion_n which_o excel_v both_o for_o vehemency_n and_o downrightnesse_n be_v the_o zeal_n of_o many_o a_o professor_n who_o be_v at_o rest_n in_o our_o day_n now_o a_o poor_a creature_n because_o he_o be_v make_v to_o suffer_v free_o and_o to_o hazard_v life_n and_o liberty_n in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o his_o zeal_n he_o be_v much_o puff_v up_o under_o these_o consideration_n 1._o that_o now_o this_o be_v a_o suffering_n with_o and_o for_o christ_n and_o therefore_o he_o shall_v reign_v with_o he_o and_o enjoy_v much_o from_o he_o 2._o that_o this_o be_v a_o part_n with_o all_o for_o christ_n and_o a_o great_a point_n of_o self-deniall_n and_o so_o a_o evidence_n of_o a_o disciple_n of_o christ_n when_o indeed_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o himself_o and_o have_v not_o at_o all_o attain_v that_o estate_n to_o forsake_v himself_o therefore_o let_v every_o heart_n though_o never_o so_o zealous_a for_o god_n take_v notice_n that_o his_o heart_n may_v deceive_v he_o in_o his_o zeal_n and_o his_o affection_n may_v blind_v his_o judgement_n and_o so_o it_o prove_v blind_a zeal_n or_o second_o consider_v that_o though_o it_o be_v such_o zeal_n as_o be_v good_a and_o to_o be_v approve_v of_o in_o its_o dispensation_n yet_o not_o at_o all_o to_o be_v rest_v upon_o nor_o to_o be_v a_o evidence_n of_o any_o true_a enjoyment_n of_o god_n though_o he_o pretend_v god_n in_o the_o forefront_n as_o jehu_n do_v the_o five_o false_a rest_n the_o next_o rest_n of_o a_o soul_n though_o i_o may_v not_o have_v speak_v of_o it_o because_o i_o have_v partly_o give_v it_o forth_o yet_o that_o thing_n may_v be_v the_o more_o open_v it_o be_v the_o creature_n righteousness_n or_o sanctification_n and_o outward_a holiness_n wherein_o both_o in_o carriage_n and_o word_n he_o do_v most_o sweet_o in_o probability_n savour_n of_o high_a enjoyment_n of_o god_n this_o be_v to_o be_v a_o testimony_n of_o the_o same_o to_o other_o though_o not_o to_o himself_o yet_o notwithstanding_o his_o rest_n be_v to_o he_o a_o high_a evidence_n of_o the_o true_a and_o real_a possessing_n of_o god_n when_o alas_o it_o be_v continual_o a_o vanish_v rest_n and_o evidence_n and_o when_o the_o creature_n stand_v in_o need_n of_o it_o it_o be_v take_v its_o wing_n and_o fly_v away_o and_o prove_v a_o miserable_a comforter_n in_o the_o sad_a strait_n of_o a_o soul_n but_o first_o let_v we_o consider_v that_o true_a holiness_n of_o a_o person_n make_v manifest_a in_o action_n flow_v from_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o soul_n make_v manifest_a in_o the_o spirit_n so_o that_o the_o true_a holiness_n or_o outward_a sanctification_n
by_o christ_n to_o the_o son_n of_o man_n whereupon_o the_o creature_n spirit_n be_v set_v a_o wait_a for_o it_o and_o at_o last_o come_v to_o enjoy_v it_o so_o in_o free_a grace_n when_o god_n represent_v this_o truth_n to_o let_v man_n see_v he_o be_v free_a in_o all_o his_o dispensation_n man_n be_v thereby_o convince_v of_o it_o his_o heart_n be_v set_v a_o wait_a for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o same_o within_o he_o which_o he_o see_v in_o god_n above_o he_o that_o be_v above_o his_o reach_n of_o enjoy_v and_o so_o he_o do_v not_o let_v he_o rest_n though_o he_o see_v a_o truth_n the_o creature_n in_o this_o condition_n may_v receive_v it_o with_o much_o joy_n as_o witness_v they_o mat._n 13._o 20._o yet_o be_v short_a of_o have_v the_o power_n this_o truth_n be_v very_o pleasant_a to_o many_o especial_o to_o those_o that_o have_v be_v the_o great_a worker_n for_o grace_n whereupn_o their_o delight_n be_v much_o take_v up_o either_o in_o hear_v read_v or_o discourse_n that_o tend_v to_o the_o declare_v of_o this_o truth_n and_o it_o be_v a_o dispensation_n of_o god_n in_o some_o man_n but_o not_o a_o rest_n unto_o they_o now_o man_n who_o be_v make_v to_o rest_n enjoy_v see_v it_o to_o be_v a_o experimental_a and_o a_o scripture_n truth_n now_o some_o man_n have_v learn_v what_o he_o believe_v and_o rest_v upon_o it_o only_o from_o report_n or_o man_n declare_v their_o experience_n or_o what_o the_o scripture_n do_v relate_v of_o other_o but_o have_v not_o any_o teach_n of_o god_n what_o it_o say_v according_a to_o the_o scripture_n in_o they_o by_o experience_n and_o here_o sometime_o man_n be_v not_o complete_o furnish_v to_o declare_v this_o truth_n but_o one_o who_o do_v enjoy_v truth_n within_o do_v a_o little_a discern_v where_o such_o a_o soul_n be_v to_o wit_n have_v hear_v and_o from_o hear_v do_v declare_v and_o yet_o not_o bring_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o truth_n to_o see_v and_o experience_n it_o with_o in_o himself_o further_o man_n may_v daily_o increase_v in_o the_o notionary_a knowledge_n of_o this_o truth_n wherein_o he_o may_v appear_v a_o tall_a cedar_n in_o his_o own_o eye_n and_o in_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o and_o grow_v up_o into_o high_a notion_n and_o light_n and_o be_v able_a to_o speak_v of_o very_o high_a and_o glorious_a light_n yet_o if_o he_o here_o rest_v it_o may_v prove_v in_o conclusion_n but_o a_o feed_n upon_o wind_n and_o husk_n furthermore_o in_o this_o knowledge_n of_o truth_n may_v man_n solace_v and_o refresh_v his_o spirit_n continual_o in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o same_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o seem_v not_o real_a satisfaction_n or_o refreshment_n if_o he_o there_o rest_v trust_v to_o it_o to_o be_v god_n himself_o for_o want_v of_o information_n of_o the_o difference_n betwixt_o what_o be_v a_o truth_n in_o itself_o see_v so_o by_o i_o and_o a_o truth_n i_o manifest_v within_o i_o not_o know_v the_o footstep_n of_o truth_n without_o man_n from_o the_o footstep_n of_o truth_n within_o man_n not_o know_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o deceit_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o its_o deceivable_a working_n make_v glorious_a rest_n of_o that_o which_o be_v none_o and_o truth_n naked_o discover_v from_o or_o by_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n with_o its_o end_n and_o testimony_n so_o as_o the_o creature_n be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o any_o thing_n though_o it_o be_v a_o truth_n without_o he_o until_o he_o find_v the_o very_a be_v of_o that_o truth_n within_o he_o therefore_o whosoever_o he_o be_v that_o read_v these_o few_o line_n let_v he_o beware_v of_o these_o thing_n follow_v first_o that_o he_o judge_v not_o that_o to_o be_v a_o place_n of_o rest_n to_o his_o spirit_n which_o be_v but_o in_o show_n not_o enjoy_v in_o substance_n from_o god_n then_o shall_v thonseal_v it_o to_o be_v a_o truth_n yea_o thou_o shall_v have_v it_o feal_v up_o for_o truth_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n within_o thou_o also_o to_o take_v notice_n of_o yet_o do_v not_o condemn_v they_o who_o have_v both_o see_v and_o know_v they_o as_o though_o they_o seek_v to_o destroy_v the_o foundation_n of_o god_n in_o saint_n but_o look_v upon_o i_o as_o we_o be_v member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n we_o be_v partaker_n of_o those_o outward_a privilege_n purchase_v by_o christ_n instance_n the_o peace_n and_o comfort_n they_o enjoy_v in_o they_o the_o glory_v and_o the_o high_a conceit_n they_o have_v of_o themselves_o above_o other_o that_o do_v not_o practice_v with_o or_o enjoy_v they_o witness_v their_o deadness_n flatnesse_n when_o they_o want_v they_o and_o their_o life_n and_o peace_n in_o the_o enjoy_n of_o they_o witness_v their_o bind_n up_o in_o they_o and_o their_o whole_a experience_n contain_v in_o this_o god_n be_v go_v and_o their_o peace_n have_v take_v its_o wing_n and_o fly_v away_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o in_o church_n relation_n have_v a_o name_n they_o live_v and_o yet_o be_v dead_a that_o be_v they_o have_v a_o name_n of_o saint_n and_o christian_n but_o they_o want_v the_o nature_n of_o they_o they_o have_v a_o profession_n but_o want_v a_o possession_n this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o come_v to_o have_v a_o burn_a up_o in_o their_o spirit_n and_o be_v bring_v to_o a_o daily_a loss_n they_o run_v fast_o into_o form_n and_o church_n relation_n than_o god_n do_v lead_v they_o therefore_o in_o they_o god_n leave_v they_o for_o this_o reason_n the_o expectation_n of_o many_o be_v frustrate_v which_o cause_v nothing_o but_o death_n and_o sorrow_n when_o they_o have_v long_v and_o press_v out_o after_o form_n and_o be_v member_n of_o congregation_n and_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o pure_a ordinance_n think_v to_o find_v so_o much_o in_o they_o and_o to_o conceive_v so_o much_o from_o they_o and_o when_o they_o come_v there_o behold_v nothing_o but_o dryness_n and_o emptiness_n and_o the_o want_n of_o god_n and_o so_o have_v suffer_v loss_n this_o be_v partly_o the_o reason_n of_o all_o the_o rent_n and_o breach_n in_o all_o church_n congregat_v and_o why_o they_o can_v stand_v be_v because_o they_o be_v not_o lead_v by_o god_n into_o these_o form_n neither_o do_v they_o see_v god_n clear_o go_v before_o they_o but_o some_o by_o affection_n some_o by_o misinformation_n and_o some_o out_o of_o zeal_n so_o that_o now_o very_o little_a of_o god_n appear_v either_o in_o their_o come_n in_o continue_v with_o or_o part_v from_o thus_o be_v bind_v up_o in_o form_n and_o live_n in_o they_o and_o dote_v too_o much_o upon_o they_o and_o rejoice_v too_o much_o in_o they_o and_o judgeing_a all_o that_o speak_v not_o for_o they_o or_o join_v not_o with_o they_o yea_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v devour_v one_o another_o because_o we_o all_o do_v not_o look_v for_o and_o expect_v that_o the_o glorious_a appearance_n of_o god_n will_v lead_v each_o man_n out_o of_o his_o dispensation_n and_o form_n though_o never_o so_o low_a to_o drink_v into_o one_o spirit_n let_v he_o that_o be_v so_o much_o either_o bent_n for_o form_n or_o whole_o against_o they_o beware_v that_o he_o do_v not_o so_o dote_v upon_o they_o as_o to_o neglect_v the_o summum_fw-la bonum_fw-la the_o chief_a good_a and_o let_v every_o heart_n that_o be_v against_o form_n beware_v of_o these_o ensue_a thing_n 1._o that_o his_o live_n above_o form_n be_v not_o a_o pretence_n of_o his_o own_o and_o no_o true_a and_o real_a thing_n for_o many_o be_v mighty_o deceive_v in_o this_o very_a particular_a thing_n they_o live_v so_o high_a as_o they_o live_v above_o all_o form_n and_o ordinance_n in_o the_o spirit_n when_o alas_o they_o be_v yet_o live_v in_o a_o form_n of_o knowledge_n scrape_v up_o either_o from_o their_o own_o industry_n or_o else_o get_v from_o hear_v other_o report_v their_o experience_n or_o apprehension_n and_o he_o present_o conceive_v it_o to_o be_v a_o truth_n conceive_v it_o to_o be_v his_o truth_n and_o so_o fall_v off_o cry_v out_o and_o judge_v all_o those_o that_o live_v yet_o out_o of_o conscience_n in_o the_o use_n of_o form_n not_o enjoy_v high_o make_n forth_o of_o god_n and_o yet_o he_o have_v but_o get_v a_o notion_n of_o this_o into_o his_o understnade_v &_o yet_o be_v ignorant_a of_o live_v or_o enjoy_v god_n in_o the_o spirit_n 2._o let_v they_o
beware_v of_o as_o great_a a_o evil_a on_o the_o right_a hand_n as_o on_o the_o left_a and_o that_o be_v that_o they_o be_v not_o live_v upon_o a_o imaginary_a god_n and_o not_o the_o true_a for_o it_o be_v the_o way_n of_o the_o creature_n to_o give_v so_o much_o way_n to_o his_o fancy_n and_o imagination_n that_o whatever_o it_o propose_v to_o be_v god_n it_o live_v upon_o and_o rejoice_v in_o and_o bring_v the_o soul_n into_o deep_a and_o carnal_a security_n with_o high_a imagination_n of_o himself_o be_v able_a to_o apprehend_v and_o discourse_v of_o deep_a and_o high_a thing_n and_o yet_o want_v the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o any_o one_o of_o they_o 3._o beware_v of_o judge_v if_o thou_o be_v break_v off_o from_o form_n those_o that_o thou_o have_v leave_v behind_o thou_o in_o the_o use_n there_o of_o confider_v that_o god_n be_v in_o all_o form_n of_o his_o own_o appoinment_n and_o that_o their_o dispensation_n may_v be_v of_o god_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v there_o splendour_n and_o glory_n of_o the_o divine_a be_v reveal_v within_o man_n and_o to_o be_v whole_o catch_v up_o in_o the_o whole_a out_o of_o all_o thing_n so_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v whole_o swallow_v up_o with_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n so_o that_o now_o neither_o eye_n have_v see_v nor_o care_n have_v hear_v neither_o by_o man_n heart_n can_v be_v imagine_v the_o depth_n of_o the_o life_n glory_n and_o enjoyment_n of_o such_o a_o heart_n yet_o it_o be_v his_o common_a meat_n and_o teach_v of_o the_o spirit_n within_o he_o so_o that_o no_o manâ—_n teach_v can_v reveal_v the_o life_n and_o centre_n of_o such_o a_o heart_n but_o it_o be_v better_a experience_v than_o can_v be_v declare_v it_o be_v so_o transcendent_a a_o life_n and_o be_v yea_o further_o for_o any_o man_n to_o live_v so_o in_o god_n as_o he_o enjoy_v god_n in_o all_o and_o see_v god_n the_o life_n and_o be_v of_o all_o yea_o it_o be_v not_o his_o judgement_n but_o he_o find_v all_o these_o thing_n effectual_o within_o he_o for_o a_o man_n may_v be_v of_o the_o judgement_n concern_v living_n whole_o in_o god_n to_o be_v the_o only_a life_n and_o yet_o not_o to_o know_v this_o from_o the_o experience_n of_o the_o vision_n teach_v within_o himself_o now_o it_o be_v no_o benefit_n for_o any_o to_o be_v of_o this_o and_o that_o judgement_n unless_o he_o live_v in_o the_o clear_a enjoyment_n of_o the_o truth_n he_o be_v convince_v of_o in_o his_o judgement_n and_o understanding_n here_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o a_o saint_n indeed_o not_o to_o know_v a_o truth_n because_o it_o be_v the_o judgement_n of_o any_o neither_o because_o it_o be_v his_o own_o judgement_n but_o that_o he_o have_v within_o he_o the_o truth_n teach_v of_o it_o to_o he_o from_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o it_o in_o he_o so_o he_o know_v the_o sun_n to_o be_v the_o sun_n not_o from_o hear-saies_a but_o he_o see_v the_o life_n and_o glory_n of_o it_o have_v his_o eye_n open_v to_o behold_v it_o and_o find_v by_o experience_n the_o heat_n and_o powerful_a operation_n of_o the_o same_o upon_o he_o as_o well_o as_o upon_o the_o earth_n so_o with_o saint_n they_o do_v not_o receive_v their_o life_n light_n or_o experience_n of_o god_n live_v in_o a_o saint_n from_o hear_v of_o it_o but_o god_n break_v forth_o in_o their_o spirit_n and_o so_o give_v they_o the_o fight_n of_o the_o glory_n light_a and_o splendour_n of_o god_n within_o themselves_o so_o soul_n beware_v thou_o be_v not_o overcome_v so_o with_o hear-saies_a as_o to_o rest_v satisfy_v with_o the_o mere_a notion_n of_o god_n and_o truth_n and_o yet_o be_v at_o this_o time_n but_o a_o blaze_a star_n who_o shall_v fall_v and_o cease_v to_o be_v what_o thou_o at_o present_a both_o to_o thyself_o and_o other_o seem_v to_o be_v only_o for_o a_o time_n thou_o may_v by_o this_o notionary_a light_n in_o thy_o understanding_n and_o judgement_n be_v a_o blaze_a star_n to_o discover_v what_o thou_o have_v for_o the_o deceit_n of_o thyself_o and_o other_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o light_n of_o the_o be_v of_o truth_n in_o thou_o but_o a_o borrow_a light_n get_v from_o other_o or_o in_o thy_o imagination_n or_o conception_n which_o shall_v sudden_o perish_v and_o then_o thou_o shall_v be_v leave_v in_o the_o dark_a as_o a_o man_n in_o the_o cloud_n reserve_v for_o the_o great_a day_n oh_o to_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n be_v a_o jewel_n it_o will_v teach_v truth_n and_o not_o lie_v therefore_o in_o the_o last_o place_n it_o be_v worth_a wait_a for_o though_o thou_o wait_v in_o silence_n and_o in_o death_n until_o thou_o do_v enjoy_v it_o lest_o thou_o pretend_v to_o have_v that_o thou_o have_v not_o and_o to_o enjoy_v that_o thou_o enjoy_v not_o for_o in_o so_o do_v thou_o shall_v weary_a soul_n be_v to_o come_v to_o christ_n for_o ease_n and_o rest_n therefore_o every_o soul_n who_o in_o his_o own_o fancy_n and_o imagination_n do_v judge_v himself_o to_o be_v weary_a may_v come_v to_o christ_n and_o so_o by_o his_o be_v weary_a there_o be_v way_n open_v for_o his_o come_n to_o he_o for_o first_o it_o may_v be_v the_o heart_n may_v be_v weary_a of_o sin_n because_o it_o bring_v judgement_n or_o condemnation_n or_o second_o it_o may_v be_v weary_a because_o of_o his_o long_a travel_n to_o and_o wait_v for_o christ_n three_o it_o may_v be_v weary_a because_o it_o can_v no_o long_o abide_v in_o these_o dispensation_n of_o god_n lead_v four_o it_o may_v be_v weary_a because_o god_n come_v not_o in_o his_o time_n and_o reward_v it_o for_o its_o breathe_n after_o and_o work_v to_o attain_v god_n or_o christ_n now_o the_o soul_n be_v false_o lead_v out_o by_o his_o own_o heart_n he_o instead_o of_o come_v to_o christ_n only_o rest_v upon_o his_o bare_a apprehension_n of_o this_o in_o the_o letter_n from_o his_o sutability_n to_o it_o in_o his_o own_o spirit_n and_o here_o he_o feed_v and_o remain_v with_o ease_n comfort_n and_o peace_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n and_o this_o he_o make_v his_o tabernacle_n though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o scripture_n be_v give_v to_o be_v a_o visible_a testimony_n or_o declaration_n of_o god_n or_o christ_n according_a to_o which_o god_n work_v in_o man_n yet_o they_o be_v never_o give_v to_o be_v a_o inward_a testimony_n or_o a_o rest_n unto_o man_n but_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o letter_n must_v be_v both_o reveal_v know_v and_o judge_v of_o by_o the_o spirit_n and_o not_o the_o spirit_n especial_o in_o internal_n by_o the_o externall_n letter_n neither_o qualification_n in_o man_n suitable_a to_o the_o letter_n in_o man_n apprehension_n be_v a_o ground_n of_o faith_n or_o rest_n without_o a_o inward_a testimony_n and_o manifestation_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o these_o qualification_n the_o eleven_o false_a rest_n the_o next_o rest_n in_o order_n to_o this_o upon_o which_o man_n centre_n their_o spirit_n and_o make_v their_o tabernacle_n be_v the_o use_n and_o application_n of_o the_o conceive_a and_o imagine_a extent_n of_o christ_n death_n which_o be_v so_o full_o declare_v in_o the_o letter_n without_o any_o more_o they_o believe_v it_o upon_o this_o testimony_n and_o here_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o joy_n peace_n assurance_n and_o rest_n now_o i_o shall_v not_o go_v about_o to_o speak_v evil_a of_o any_o point_n of_o judgement_n in_o reference_n to_o any_o particular_a faction_n but_o to_o come_v to_o lay_v open_a my_o own_o experience_n and_o false_a rest_n which_o in_o so_o do_v i_o may_v come_v to_o lay_v open_a a_o way_n whereby_o those_o that_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o same_o deceit_n may_v come_v to_o see_v it_o in_o themselves_o and_o so_o may_v from_o sad_a experience_n seal_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o we_o be_v say_v for_o many_o who_o have_v go_v through_o this_o dispensation_n and_o have_v believe_v this_o to_o be_v a_o truth_n when_o now_o alas_o they_o see_v that_o they_o be_v both_o ignorant_a of_o what_o this_o christ_n be_v or_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o his_o death_n want_v the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o in_o themselves_o now_o the_o terror_n of_o death_n have_v or_o do_v seize_v upon_o they_o and_o instead_o of_o be_v joy_n and_o peace_n unto_o they_o it_o have_v produce_v death_n and_o sorrow_n in_o they_o but_o first_o of_o all_o this_o soul_n who_o be_v thus_o rest_a upon_o christ_n die_v for_o all_o he_o see_v the_o scripture_n say_v he_o give_v himself_o a_o ransom_n for_o all_o the_o conclusion_n be_v this_o of_o such_o a_o spirit_n if_o for_o all_o then_o for_o i_o and_o this_o he_o believe_v and_o this_o say_v he_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o true_a faith_n when_o he_o be_v altogether_o decive_v for_o the_o ground_n of_o faith_n be_v something_o out_o of_o the_o creature_n in_o god_n before_o time_n reveal_v and_o make_v manifest_a from_o god_n to_o the_o soul_n in_o time_n upon_o which_o the_o soul_n build_v his_o faith_n rest_v upon_o it_o and_o be_v keep_v unto_o all_o time_n in_o the_o glory_n and_o splendour_n of_o it_o but_o the_o soul_n want_v this_o in_o a_o particular_a way_n of_o discovery_n he_o make_v the_o other_o the_o ground_n of_o his_o confidence_n for_o refreshment_n peace_n safety_n and_o happiness_n and_o he_o conclude_v first_o that_o no_o true_a faith_n can_v be_v but_o this_o second_o that_o none_o have_v any_o ground_n to_o believe_v but_o upon_o this_o ground_n when_o the_o poor_a heart_n be_v altogether_o ignorant_a in_o his_o own_o breast_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o god_n come_v to_o reveal_v truth_n yea_o himself_o in_o his_o son_n by_o his_o spirit_n whereas_o now_o man_n ground_n of_o his_o happiness_n lie_v not_o in_o a_o misunderstand_v scripture_n without_o he_o but_o in_o a_o right_n discern_v reveal_v and_o know_v god_n within_o he_o three_o this_o soul_n daily_o increase_v in_o the_o assurance_n of_o this_o his_o rest_n by_o his_o daily_a study_n pain_n and_o diligence_n wherein_o he_o fill_v his_o head_n with_o so_o much_o of_o the_o scripture_n as_o indeed_o he_o make_v it_o so_o glorious_a as_o it_o conquer_v his_o spirit_n and_o many_o more_o into_o a_o follace_n himself_o in_o this_o very_a particular_a when_o indeed_o he_o be_v miss_v the_o chees_a good_a which_o be_v the_o life_n of_o he_o who_o put_v a_o end_n of_o all_o controversy_n to_o all_o such_o dispute_n when_o he_o come_v to_o appear_v in_o the_o spirit_n but_o alas_o before_o no_o marvel_n though_o the_o poor_a soul_n be_v run_v from_o mountain_n to_o hill_n though_o he_o forget_v he_o who_o be_v the_o rest_a place_n of_o zion_n lie_v as_o in_o hell_n be_v fill_v with_o horror_n and_o fear_n and_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o nothing_o but_o a_o revenge_a and_o torment_v god_n in_o which_o torment_v of_o spirit_n he_o lie_v they_o have_v run_v unto_o minister_n to_o see_v what_o they_o will_v say_v some_o of_o they_o put_v they_o upon_o do_v some_o of_o they_o apply_v cure_n to_o they_o and_o here_o a_o poor_a heart_n think_v to_o be_v satisfy_v where_o he_o never_o rest_v but_o run_v from_o one_o to_o another_o from_o creature_n to_o creature_n see_v if_o he_o can_v get_v any_o thing_n from_o they_o sometime_o come_v away_o with_o much_o peace_n other_o time_n come_v away_o with_o a_o lesson_n of_o do_v and_o by_o these_o mean_n come_v soul_n sometime_o to_o have_v their_o deliverance_n and_o for_o a_o space_n rest_v until_o it_o break_v forth_o again_o the_o three_o way_n wherein_o many_o other_o attain_v deliverance_n be_v from_o god_n as_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n from_o their_o land_n of_o bondage_n tyranny_n and_o taskmaster_n which_o though_o god_n himself_o do_v free_v they_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v not_o to_o be_v their_o rest_n but_o to_o be_v their_o first_o step_n towards_o their_o rest_n so_o though_o god_n do_v sweet_o deliver_v a_o soul_n from_o and_o out_o of_o this_o trouble_n and_o perplexity_n of_o spirit_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v a_o rest_n unto_o he_o
