as_o for_o example_n when_o by_o the_o word_n a_o man_n be_v make_v to_o know_v christ_n to_o be_v the_o lord_n the_o redeemer_n etc._n etc._n doubtless_o that_o be_v a_o testimony_n of_o god_n spirit_n by_o the_o word_n witness_v to_o the_o heart_n that_o truth_n and_o cause_v the_o heart_n to_o believe_v it_o but_o here_o we_o must_v careful_o take_v heed_n that_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o deceyve_v touch_v that_o which_o you_o most_o disire_v to_o know_v that_o be_v touch_v our_o adoption_n by_o mistake_v the_o spirit_n testimony_n for_o eschew_v this_o danger_n we_o have_v to_o understande_v that_o the_o spirit_n by_o the_o word_n persuade_v two_o manner_n of_o way_n to_o wit_n general_o and_o special_o general_o when_o that_o which_o be_v reveyl_v out_o of_o the_o word_n be_v general_o believe_v as_o god_n truth_n special_o when_o it_o be_v special_o believe_v the_o general_n be_v no_o warrant_n of_o adoption_n for_o in_o that_o sort_n the_o very_a devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v 19_o say_v james_n a_o reprobate_n may_v believe_v general_o all_o to_o be_v true_a which_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o never_o have_v any_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o his_o particular_a adoption_n he_o may_v believe_v that_o christ_n be_v a_o saviour_n of_o sinner_n and_o yet_o not_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v a_o saviour_n unto_o he_o he_o may_v believe_v that_o god_n in_o christ_n will_v forgive_v sinner_n and_o yet_o no_o way_n have_v assurance_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o his_o own_o sin_n yea_o he_o may_v be_v a_o preacher_n and_o be_v witness_n of_o all_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n to_o other_o &_o yet_o have_v no_o part_n in_o they_o himself_o therefore_o leave_v this_o general_a testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n i_o come_v to_o the_o special_a testimony_n which_o we_o must_v discern_v before_o our_o adoption_n be_v seal_v to_o us._n and_o in_o discern_v this_o there_o be_v also_o great_a wisdom_n require_v for_o therein_o also_o may_v a_o man_n be_v deceyve_v for_o there_o be_v some_o sort_n of_o special_a testification_n that_o witness_v not_o adoption_n for_o understand_v hereof_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o the_o spirit_n testimony_n in_o special_a manner_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n the_o first_o be_v when_o he_o witness_n and_o reveile_v grace_n particular_o to_o a_o man_n but_o imprint_n not_o the_o thing_n reveil_v in_o the_o heart_n neither_o seal_v it_o in_o his_o soul_n the_o second_o be_v when_o not_o only_o he_o reveyle_n and_o witness_n the_o promise_n in_o special_a manner_n to_o a_o man_n but_o also_o write_v they_o in_o his_o heart_n and_o seal_v they_o in_o his_o soul_n now_o to_o make_v this_o more_o plain_a we_o must_v consider_v what_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n covenant_n in_o christ_n with_o the_o elect_a after_o these_o day_n say_v the_o lord_n i_o will_v put_v my_o law_n in_o their_o mind_n 8._o and_o in_o their_o heart_n i_o will_v write_v they_o if_o we_o way_n these_o word_n aright_o we_o shall_v see_v that_o which_o i_o have_v speak_v clear_a god_n in_o give_v his_o law_n speak_v to_o his_o people_n and_o by_o his_o spirit_n witness_v his_o will_n to_o they_o but_o this_o word_n which_o be_v speak_v be_v not_o write_v in_o their_o heart_n but_o in_o table_n of_o stone_n therefore_o the_o jew_n do_v not_o abide_v in_o that_o covenant_n the_o peculiar_a promise_n of_o god_n to_o the_o elect_a in_o christ_n be_v 9_o that_o he_o shall_v write_v his_o word_n in_o their_o heart_n when_o they_o the_o lord_n spirit_n witness_v &_o in_o witness_v write_v the_o thing_n witness_v in_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v a_o assurance_n of_o god_n effectual_a speak_v but_o when_o he_o witness_n to_o the_o heart_n &_o yet_o write_v not_o that_o testimony_n in_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v no_o testimony_n of_o adoption_n to_o make_v this_o plain_a it_o be_v certain_a there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a faith_n in_o the_o heart_n where_o the_o word_n of_o god_n abide_v not_o christ_n show_v this_o in_o the_o five_o chap._n of_o john_n 38._o speak_v to_o the_o jew_n his_o word_n say_v he_o have_v you_o not_o abide_v in_o you_o because_o you_o believe_v not_o in_o he_o who_o he_o have_v send_v declare_v that_o the_o abide_v of_o the_o word_n in_o man_n and_o believe_v do_v still_o accompany_v one_o the_o other_o and_o if_o we_o will_v consider_v his_o speech_n in_o the_o six_o chap._n of_o john_n we_o shall_v see_v that_o the_o cause_n why_o his_o word_n do_v not_o abide_v in_o they_o 45._o be_v because_o they_o be_v not_o teach_v difference_n both_o of_o measure_n &_o manner_n for_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o excellent_a piece_n of_o wine_n to_o sell_v will_v give_v to_o all_o that_o come_v so_o much_o as_o be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v they_o know_v the_o taste_n of_o it_o yet_o he_o give_v not_o to_o every_o one_o such_o a_o quantity_n as_o be_v sufficient_a to_o bring_v nourishment_n &_o refreshment_n to_o their_o body_n &_o spirit_n and_o as_o a_o physician_n that_o have_v prepare_v a_o comfortable_a potion_n for_o the_o health_n of_o a_o belove_a patient_n he_o will_v give_v to_o other_o a_o little_a of_o it_o to_o make_v they_o apprehend_v the_o taste_n of_o it_o but_o not_o so_o as_o to_o have_v any_o strength_n to_o make_v any_o operation_n in_o their_o stomach_n for_o that_o quantity_n he_o give_v only_o to_o the_o patient_a for_o who_o health_n it_o be_v prepare_v now_o they_o who_o taste_v of_o this_o wine_n or_o potion_n can_v discern_v the_o goodness_n of_o it_o albeit_o they_o never_o do_v drink_v it_o nor_o ever_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o refresh_a power_n of_o it_o so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o dispensation_n he_o use_v sometime_o only_o to_o give_v a_o naked_a sight_n and_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o mercy_n in_o he_o to_o man_n and_o this_o i_o call_v before_o a_o general_a persuasion_n of_o the_o spirit_n when_o man_n be_v make_v to_o know_v christ_n in_o general_a but_o without_o all_o sense_n of_o feelinge_v of_o he_o sometime_o the_o spirit_n come_v near_o and_o touch_v the_o heart_n with_o christ_n and_o with_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v even_o so_o far_o as_o the_o heart_n receive_v a_o taste_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n &_o of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n in_o such_o sort_n that_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n incontinentlie_o with_o joy_n 20._o as_o say_v christ_n the_o spirit_n have_v in_o that_o measure_n testify_v the_o word_n to_o they_o as_o be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v they_o to_o taste_v the_o sweetness_n of_o it_o albeit_o he_o never_o fill_v their_o heart_n with_o it_o nor_o imprint_v it_o in_o their_o mind_n that_o they_o may_v find_v the_o power_n of_o it_o unto_o
