regeneration_n and_o resurrection_n a_o child_n be_v bear_v at_o once_o and_o the_o dead_a shall_v be_v raise_v in_o a_o moment_n in_o the_o twinkle_n of_o a_o eye_n but_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o plausible_a appearance_n and_o conspiracy_n of_o metaphor_n i_o shall_v show_v that_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o conversion_n and_o regeneration_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v effect_v in_o a_o instant_n and_o all_o at_o once_o be_v not_o well_o ground_v either_o upon_o scripture_n or_o experience_n not_o but_o that_o god_n can_v do_v so_o if_o he_o please_v and_o work_v this_o change_n in_o some_o much_o soon_o and_o quick_a than_o in_o other_o but_o there_o be_v nothing_o either_o in_o scripture_n or_o experience_n to_o persuade_v we_o that_o this_o be_v the_o usual_a much_o less_o the_o constant_a and_o unalterable_a method_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n to_o bring_v it_o about_o in_o a_o instant_n without_o any_o sensible_a step_n and_o degree_n but_o for_o the_o full_a clear_n of_o this_o matter_n i_o shall_v proceed_v by_o these_o step_n first_o i_o shall_v show_v upon_o what_o mistake_a ground_n and_o principle_n this_o doctrine_n rely_v beside_o the_o metaphor_n already_o mention_v which_o i_o have_v show_v to_o be_v of_o no_o force_n to_o prove_v the_o thing_n second_o i_o shall_v plain_o show_v what_o regeneration_n be_v by_o the_o ordinary_a method_n of_o god_n grace_n both_o in_o those_o who_o be_v regenerate_v by_o a_o pious_a and_o religious_a education_n and_o in_o those_o who_o be_v reclaim_v from_o a_o vicious_a course_n of_o life_n four_o that_o all_o this_o be_v very_a consonant_n and_o agreeable_a to_o what_o the_o scripture_n plain_o and_o constant_o declare_v concern_v it_o first_o i_o shall_v discover_v entrance_n into_o this_o state_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o true_a that_o it_o only_o signify_v that_o for_o it_o be_v use_v likewise_o in_o scripture_n to_o signify_v our_o continuance_n in_o that_o state_n for_o christian_n be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o consequent_o in_o a_o regenerate_a state_n not_o only_o in_o the_o instant_n of_o this_o change_n but_o during_o their_o continuance_n in_o it_o beside_o that_o our_o first_o change_n be_v as_o well_o call_v our_o sanctification_n as_o our_o progress_n and_o continuance_n in_o a_o state_n of_o holiness_n so_o that_o broacher_n and_o abettor_n of_o heresy_n in_o the_o christian_a church_n have_v be_v man_n of_o learning_n and_o wit_n and_o most_o of_o the_o famous_a heresy_n that_o be_v record_v in_o ecclesiastical_a history_n have_v their_o name_n from_o some_o learned_a man_n or_o other_o so_o that_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mistake_n to_o think_v that_o the_o way_n to_o prevent_v error_n and_o heresy_n in_o the_o church_n be_v to_o take_v the_o bible_n out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o people_n so_o long_o as_o the_o free_a use_n of_o it_o be_v permit_v to_o man_n of_o learning_n and_o skill_n in_o who_o hand_n the_o danger_n of_o pervert_v it_o be_v much_o great_a the_o ancient_a father_n i_o be_o sure_a do_v frequent_o prescribe_v to_o the_o people_n the_o constant_a and_o careful_a read_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n as_o the_o sure_a antidote_n against_o the_o poison_n of_o dangerous_a error_n and_o damnable_a heresy_n and_o if_o there_o be_v so_o much_o danger_n of_o seduction_n into_o error_n from_o the_o oracle_n of_o truth_n by_o what_o other_o or_o better_a mean_n can_v we_o hope_v to_o be_v secure_v against_o this_o danger_n if_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v so_o cross_a and_o improper_a a_o mean_n to_o this_o end_n one_o will_v think_v that_o the_o teach_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v much_o less_o effectual_a so_o that_o man_n must_v either_o be_v leave_v in_o their_o ignorance_n or_o they_o must_v be_v permit_v to_o learn_v from_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n and_o whatever_o force_n this_o reason_n of_o the_o danger_n of_o heresy_n have_v in_o it_o to_o deprive_v the_o common_a people_n of_o the_o use_n of_o the_o scripture_n i_o be_o sure_a it_o be_v much_o strong_a to_o wrest_v they_o out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o priest_n and_o the_o learned_a because_o they_o be_v much_o more_o capable_a of_o pervert_v they_o to_o so_o bad_a a_o purpose_n five_o and_o last_o this_o danger_n be_v as_o great_a and_o visible_a in_o the_o age_n of_o meekness_n and_o humility_n and_o mercifulness_n and_o righteousness_n and_o peaceableness_n and_o pâ—râ—ty_n and_o patience_n under_o suffering_n and_o persecution_n for_o righteousness_n sake_n as_o it_o do_v not_o render_v a_o man_n like_o god_n so_o neither_o do_v it_o dispose_v he_o for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o he_o if_o a_o man_n have_v the_o understanding_n of_o a_o angel_n he_o may_v for_o all_o that_o be_v a_o devil_n he_o that_o commit_v sin_n be_v of_o the_o devil_n and_o whatever_o knowledge_n such_o a_o man_n may_v have_v he_o be_v of_o a_o devilish_a temper_n and_o of_o persecution_n &_o suffer_v for_o the_o cause_n of_o religion_n to_o avoid_v which_o many_o do_v then_o forsake_v the_o truth_n and_o apostatise_v from_o their_o christian_a profession_n the_o true_a cause_n of_o which_o be_v not_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n which_o permit_v they_o to_o be_v expose_v to_o those_o suffering_n but_o their_o inordinate_a love_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n and_o their_o unreasonable_a fear_n of_o the_o evil_n and_o suffering_n of_o it_o they_o value_v the_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o present_a life_n more_o than_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o that_o eternal_a happiness_n which_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o they_o in_o another_o life_n and_o they_o fear_v the_o persecution_n of_o man_n more_o than_o the_o threaten_n of_o god_n and_o the_o dreadful_a punishment_n of_o another_o world_n they_o have_v a_o inordinate_a affection_n for_o the_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n and_o their_o unwillingness_n to_o part_v with_o ease_n be_v a_o great_a temptation_n to_o they_o to_o quit_v their_o religion_n by_o this_o bait_n they_o be_v catch_v when_o it_o come_v to_o the_o trial_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v proportionable_o in_o all_o other_o sort_n of_o temptation_n man_n be_v betray_v by_o themselves_o and_o the_o temptation_n without_o have_v a_o party_n within_o they_o with_o which_o it_o hold_v a_o secret_a correspondence_n and_o which_o be_v ready_a to_o yield_v and_o give_v consent_n to_o it_o so_o that_o it_o be_v our_o own_o consent_n and_o treachery_n to_o ourselves_o that_o make_v any_o temptation_n master_n of_o we_o and_o without_o that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o be_v overcome_v every_o man_n be_v tempt_v when_o he_o be_v draw_v aside_o of_o his_o own_o lust_n and_o entice_v it_o be_v and_o their_o malicious_a design_n upon_o we_o and_o that_o we_o may_v be_v continual_o upon_o our_o guard_n aware_a of_o our_o danger_n and_o arm_v against_o it_o second_o the_o devil_n do_v not_o only_o present_a to_o man_n the_o temptation_n and_o occasion_n of_o sin_n but_o when_o he_o be_v permit_v to_o make_v near_a approach_n to_o they_o do_v excite_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o
