XII 1 The Creatour is to be remembred in due time 8 The preachers care to edifie 13 The fear of God is the chief antidote of vanity * Pr. 22.6 REmember now thy Creatour in the days of thy youth while the evil days come not nor the years draw nigh when thou shalt say I have no pleasure in them 2 While the sun or the light or the moon or the stars be not darkned not the clouds return after the rain 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble and the strong men shall bow themselves and ‖ Or the grinders fail because they grinde little the grinders cease because they are few and those that look out of the windows be darkned 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets when the sound of the grinding is low and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird and all the daughters of musick shall be brought sow 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high and fears shall be in the way and the almond-tree shall flourish and the grashopper shall be a burden and desire shall fail because man goeth to his long home and the mourners go about the streets 6 Or ever the â—ilver cord be loosed or the golden bowl be broken or the pitcher be broken at the fountain or the wheel broken at the cistern 7 * Gen. 3.19 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it 8 ¶ * Ch. 1.2 Vanity of vanities saith the preacher all is vanity 9 And ‖ Or the more wise the preacher was c. moreover because the preacher was wise he still taught the people knowledge yea he gave good heed and sought out and * 1 Kin. 4.32 set in order many proverbs 10 The preacher sought to finde out †Heb. words of delight acceptable words and that which was written was upright even words of truth 11 The words of the wise are as goads and as nails fastned by the masters of assemblies which are given from one shepherd 12 And further by these my son be admonished of making many books there is no end and much ‖ Or reading study is a weariness of the flesh 13 ¶ ‖ Or The end of the matter even all that hath-been heard is Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man 14 For * Ro. 2.16 14.20 2 Cor. â— 10 God shall bring every work into judgement with every secret thing whether it be good or whether it be evil ¶ The SONG of SOLOMON CHAP. V. 1 The judgements of God upon the jews for their perversness 7 for their adultery 10 for their impiety 19 for their contempt of God 25 and for their great corruption in the civil state 30 and ecclesiastical RUn ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem and see now and know and seek in the broad places thereof if ye can finde a man if there be any that executeth judgement that seeketh the truth and I will pardon it 2 And though they say The LORD liveth surely they swear falsly 3 O LORD are not thine eyes upon the truth thou hast * Isa 9.13 Chap. 2.30 stricken them but they have not grieved thou hast consumed them but they have refused to receive correction they have made their faces harder then a rock they have refused to return 4 Therefore I said Surely these are poor they are foolish for they know not the way of the LORD nor the judgement of their God 5 I will get me unto the great men and will speak unto them for they have known the way of the LORD and the judgement of their God but these have altogether broken the yoke and burst the bonds 6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them and a wolf of the ‖ Or â—â—sirts evenings shall spoil them a leopard shall watch over their cities every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces because their transgressions are many and their backslidings †Heb. art strong are increased 7 ¶ How shall I pardon thee for this thy children have forsaken me and sworn by them that are no gods when I had sed them to the full they then committed adultery and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots houses 8 * Ezek. 22.11 They were as sed horses in the morning every one neighed after his neighbours wife 9 Shall I not visit for these things saith the LORD and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this 10 ¶ Go ye up upon her walls and destroy but make not a full end take away her battlements for they are not the LORDS 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me saith the LORD 12 They have belied the LORD and said * Isa 28.15 It is not he neither shall evil come upon us neither shall we see sword nor famine 13 And the prophets shall become wind and the word is not in them thus shall it be done unto them 14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts Because ye speak this word * Chap. 1.9 behold I will make my words in thy mouth fire and this people wood and it shall devour them 15 Lo I will bring a * Deut. 28.49 Chap. 1.15 and 6.22 nation upon you from far O house of Israel saith the LORD it is a mighty nation it is an ancient nation a nation whose language thou knowest not neither understandest what they say 16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre they are all mighty men 17 And they shall eat up thine * Levit. 26.16 Deut. 28.31 33. harvest and thy bread whith thy sons and thy daughters should eat they shall eat up thy s ocks and thine herds they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig-trees they shall impoverish thy senced cities wherein thou trustedst with the sword 18 Nevertheless in those days saith the LORD I * Chap. 4.27 will not make a full end with you 19 ¶ And it shall come to pass when ye shall say * Chap. 13.21 16.10 Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us then shalt thou answer them Like as ye have forsaken me and served strange gods in your land so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours 20 Declare this in the house of Jacob and publish it in Judah saying 21 Hear now this O * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Joh 12.40 Act. 28.26 Rom. 11.8 foolish people and without †Heb. heart understanding which have eyes and see not which have ears and hear not 22 Fear ye not sne saith the LORD will ye not tremble at my presence which have placed the sand for the * Job 38.10 11. VI. 1 The enemies sent against Judah 4 encourage themselves 6 God setteth them on work because of their sins 9 The prophet lamenteth the judgements of God because of their sins 18 He proclaimeth Gods warth 26 He calleth the people to mourn for the judgment on their sins O Ye children of Benjam'n gather your selves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem and blow the trumpet in Tekoa and set up a signe of fire in Beth-haccerem for evil appeareth out of the north and great destruction 2 I have likened the daughter of Zion to a ‖ Or â—â—elling at boâ—â— comely and delicate woman 3 The shepherds with their flocks shall come unto her they shall pitch

one came down from heaven 14 He cried †Cald. with might aloud and faid thus How down the tree and cut off his branches shake off his leaves and scatter his fruit let the beasts get away from under it and the fowls from his branches 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth even with a band of iron and brass in the tender grass of the field and let it be wet with the dew of heaven and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth 16 Let his heart be changed from mans and let a beasts heart be given unto him and let seven times pass over him 17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers and the demand by the word of the holy ones to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will and setteth up over it the basest of men 18 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen now thou O Belteshazzar declare the interpretation thereof forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation but thou art able for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee 19 ¶ Then Daniel whose name was Belteshazzar was astonied for one hour and his thoughts troubled him the king spake and said Belteshazzar let not the dream or the interpretation thereof trouble thee Belteshazzar answered and said My lord the dream be to them that hate thee and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies 20 The tree that thou sawest which grew was strong whose height reached unto the heaven and the â—ight thereof to all the earth 21 Whose leaves were fair and the fruit thereof much and in it was meat for all under which the beasts of the field dwelt and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation 22 It is thou O king that art grown and become strong for thy greatness is grown and reacheth unto heaven and thy dominion to the end of the earth 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven and saying Hew the tree down and destroy it yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth even with a band of iron and brass in the tender grass of the field and let it be wet with the dew of heaven and let his portion be with the beasts of the field till seven times pass over him 24 This is the interpretation O king and this is the decree of the most High which is come upon my lord the king 25 That they shall * Ch. 5.21 c. drive thee from men and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven and seven times shall pass over thee till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will 26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree-roots thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule 27 Wherefore O king let my counsel be acceptable unto thee and break off thy sins by righteousness and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor if it may be ‖ Or an beaâ—ing of thineerroâ—â— a lengthning of thy tranquillity 28 ¶ All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar 29 At the end of twelve moneths he walked ‖ Or upon in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon 30 The king spake and said Is not this great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the honour of my majesty 31 While the word was in the kings mouth there fell a voice from heaven saying O king Nebuchadnezzar to thee it is spoken The kingdom is departed from thee 32 And they shall drive thee from men and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen and seven times shall pass over thee until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will 33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar and he was driven from men and did eat grass as oxen and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hairs were grown like eagles feathers and his nails like birds claws 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lift up mine eyes unto heaven and mine understanding returned unto me and I blessed the most High and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever whose dominion is * Ch. 7.14 Mic. 4.7 Lu. 1.33 an everlasting dominion and his kingdom is from generation to generation 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth and none can stay his hand or say unto him * Job 9.12 If. 45.9 What doest thou 36 At the same time my reason returned unto me and for the glory of my kingdom mine honour and brightness returned unto me and my counsellours and my lords sought unto me and I was established in my kingdom and excellent majesty was added unto me 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven all whose works are truth and his ways judgement and those that walk in pride he is able to abase CHAP. V. 1 Belshazzars impious â—east 5 A â—and-writing unknown to the magicians troubleth the king 10 At the commendation of the queen Daniel is brought 17 He reproving the king of pride and idolatry 25 readeth and interpreteth the writing 30 The monarchy is translated to the Medes BElshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords and drank wine before the thousand 2 Belshazzar whiles he tasted the wine commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had †Cald. brought forth taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem that the king and his princes his wives and his concubines might drink therein 3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem and the king and his princes his wives and his concubines drank in them 4 They drunk wine and praised the gods of gold and of silver of brass of iron of wood and of stone 5 ¶ In the same hour came forth fingers of a mans hand and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the kings palace and the king saw the
9 Unto you therefore O kings do I speak that ye may learn wisdom and not fall away 10 For they that keep holiness holily shall be ‖ Or justified judged holy and they that have learned such things shall finde ‖ Or a defence what to answer 11 Wherefore set your affection upon my words desire them and ye shall be instructed 12 Wisdom is glorious and never fadeth away yea she is easily seen of them that love her and found of such as seek her 13 She preventeth them that desire her in making her self first known unto them 14 Whoso seeketh her early shall have no great travel for he shall finde her sitting at his doors 15 To think therefore upon her is perfection of wisdom and whoso watcheth for her shall quickly be without care 16 For she goeth about seeking such as are worthy of her sheweth her self favourably unto them in the ways and meeteth them in every thought 17 For the very true beginning of her is the desire of ‖ Or nurture discipline and the care of discipline is love 18 And love is the keeping of her laws and the giving heed unto her laws is the assurance of incorruption 19 And incorruption maketh us near unto God 20 Therefore the desire of wisdom bringeth to a kingdom 21 If your delight be then in thrones and sceptres O ye kings of the people honour wisdom that ye may reign for evermore 22 As for wisdom what she is and how she came up I will tell you and will not hide mysteries from you but will seek her out from the beginning of her nativity and bring the knowledge of her into light and will not pass over the truth 23 Neither will I go with-consuming envy for such a man shall have no fellowship with wisdom 24 But the multitude of the wise is â—â—e welfare of the world and a wise king is the upholding of the peoâ—â—e 25 Receive therefore instruction through my words and it shall do you good CHAP. VII 1 All men have their beginning and end alike 8 He preferred wisdom before all things elso 15 God gave him all the knowledge which he had 22 The praise of wisdom I My self also am a mortal man like to all and the offspring of him that was first made of the earth 2 And in my mothers womb was fashioned to be flesh in the time of ten moneths * Job 10.10 being compacted in bloud of the seed of man and the pleasure that came with sleep 3 And when I was born I drew in the common air and fell upon the earth which is of like nature and the first voice which I uttered was crying as all others do 4 I was nursed in swadling-clothes and that with cares 5 For there is no king that had any other beginning of birth 6 * Job 1.21 1 Tim. 6.7 For all men have one entrance into life and the like going out 7 Wherefore I prayed and understanding was given me I called upon God and the spirit of wisdom came to me 8 I preferred her before sceptres and thrones and esteemed riches nothing in comparison of her 9 Neither compared I unto her any †Gr. stone of inestimable priâ—â— precious stone because all gold in respect of her is as a little sand and silver shall be counted as clay before her 10 I loved her above health and beauty and chose to have her in stead of light for the light that cometh from her never goeth out 11 * 1 Kings 3.13 Mat. 6 33. All good things together came to me with her and innumerable riches in her hands 12 And I rejoyced in them all because wisdom goeth before them and I knew not that she was the mother of them 13 I learned †Gr. without guile diligently and do communicate her †Gr. without envy liberally I do not hide her riches 14 For she is a treasure unto men that never faileth which they that use ‖ Or enter friendship with God become the friends of God being commended for the gifts that come from learning 15 ‖ Or God grant God hath granted me to speak as I would and to conceive as is meet for the things that ‖ Or are to be spoken of are given me because it is he that leadeth unto wisdom and directeth the wise 16 For in his hand are both we and our words all wisdom also and knowledge of workmanship 17 For he hath given me certain knowledge of the things that are namely to know how the world was made and the operation of the elements 18 The beginning ending and midst of the times the alterations of the turning of the sun and the change of seasons 19 The circuits of years and the positions of stars 20 The natures of living creatures and the furies of wilde beasts the violence of winds and the reasonings of men the diversities of plants and the vertues of roots 21 And all such things as are either secret or manifest them I know 22 For wisdom which is the worker of all things taught me for in her is an understanding spirit holy †Gr. onely begotten one onely manifold subtil lively clear undefiled plain not subject to hurt loving the thing that is good quick which cannot be letted ready to do good 23 Kinde to man stedfast sure free from care having all power overseeing all things and going through all understanding pure and most subtil spirits 24 For wisdom is more moving then any motion she passeth and goeth through all things by reason of her pureness 25 For she is the ‖ Or vapour breath of the power of God and a pure ‖ Or strum influence flowing from the glory of the Almighty therefore can no defiled thing fall into her 26 For she is the * Heb. 1.3 brightness of the everlasting light the unspotted mirrour of the power of God and the image of his goodness 27 And being but one she can do all things and remaining in her self she ‖ Or â—â—uteth maketh all things new and in all ages entring into holy souls she maketh them friends of God and prophets 28 For God loveth none but him that dwelleth with wisdom 29 For she is more beautiful then the sun and above all the order of stars being compared with the sight she is found before it 30 For after this cometh night but vice shall not prevail against wisdom CHAP. VIII 2 He is in love with wisdom 4 for he that hath it hath every good thing 21 It cannot be bad but from God WIsdom reacheth from one end to another mightily and ‖ Or profitably sweetly doth she order all things 2 I loved her and sought her out from my youth I desired ‖ Or to marry her to my self to make her my spouse and I was a lover of her beauty 3 In that she is conversant with God she magnifieth her nobility yea the Lord of all things himself
is well-pleasing unto him and they that love him shall be filled with the law 17 They that fear the Lord will prepare their hearts and humble their souls in his sight 18 Saying We will fall into the hands of the Lord and not into the hands of men for as his majesty is so is his mercy CHAP. III. 1 Children must honour and help both their parents 21 We may not desire to know all things 26 The incorrigible must needs perish 30 Alms are rewarded HEar me your father O children and do thereafter that ye may be safe 2 For the Lord hath given * Ex. 20.12 Deut. 5.6 the father honour over the children and hath confirmed the ‖ Or judgement authority of the mother over the sons 3 Whoso honoureth his father maketh an atonement for his sins 4 And he that honoureth his mother is as one that layeth up treasure 5 Whoso honoureth his father shall have joy of his own children and when he maketh his prayer he shall be heard 6 He that honoureth his father shall have a long life and he that is obedient unto the Lord shall be a comfort to his mother 7 He that feareth the Lord will honour his father and will do service unto his parents as to his masters 8 * Verse 2. Honour thy father and mother both in word and deed that a blessing may come upon thee from them 9 For the * Gen. 27.27 Deut. 33.1 blessing of the father establisheth the houses of children but the curse of the mother rooteth out foundations 10 Glory not in the dishonour of thy father for thy fathers dishonour is no glory unto thee 11 For the glory of a man is from the honour of his father and a mother in dishonour is a reproach unto the children 12 My son help thy father in his age and grieve him not as long as he liveth 13 And if his understanding fail have patience with him and despise him not when thou art ‖ Or in all thine ability in thy full strength 14 For the relieving of thy father shall not be forgotten and in stead of sins it shall be added to build thee up 15 In the day of thine affliction it shall be remembred thy sins also shall melt away as the ice in the fair warm weather 16 He that forsaketh his father is as a blasphemer and he that angreth his mother is cursed of God 17 My son go on with thy business in meekness so shalt thou be beloved of him that is approved 18 * Phil. 2.3 The greater thou art the more humble thy self and thou shalt finde favour before the Lord. 19 Many are in high place and of renown but * Psal 25.9 14. mysteries are revealed unto the meek 20 For the power of the Lord is great and he is honoured of the lowly 21 * Prov. 25.27 Rom. 12.3 Seek not out the things that are too hard for thee neither search the things that are above thy strength 22 But what is commanded thee think thereupon with reverence for it is not needful for thee to see with thine eyes the things that are in secret 23 Be not curious in unnecessary matters for mo things are shewed unto thee then men understand 24 For many are deceived by their own vain opinion and an evil suspicion hath overthrown their judgement 25 Without eyes thou shalt want light profess not the knowledge thereof that thou hast not 26 A stubborn heart shall fare evil at the last and he that loveth danger shall perish therein 27 An obstinate heart shall be laden with sorrows and the wicked man shall heap sin upon sin 28 ‖ Or The proud man is not healed by his punishment In the punishment of the proud there is no remedy for the plant of wickedness hath taken root in him 29 The heart of the prudent will understand a parable and an attentive ear is the desire of a wise man 30 * Ps 41.1 c. Dan. 4.27 Matth. 5.7 Water will quench a flaming fire and alms maketh an atonement for sins 31 And he that requiteth good turns is mindful of that which may come hereafter and when he falleth he shall finde a stay CHAP. IV. 1 We may not despise the poor or fatherless 11 but seek for wisdom 20 not be ashamed of some things nor gainsay the truth 30 nor be as lions in our houses MY son defraud not the poor of his living and make not the needy eyes to wait long 2 Make not an hungry soul sorrowful neither provoke a man in his distress 3 Add not more trouble to an heart that is vexed and defer not to give to him that is in need 4 Reject not the supplication of the afflicted neither turn away thy face from a poor man 5 Turn not away thine eye from ‖ Or him that asketh the needy and give him none occasion to curse thee 6 For if he curse thee in the bitterness of his soul his prayer shall be heard of him that made him 7 Get thy self the love of the congregation and bow thy head to a great man 8 Let it not grieve thee to bow down thine ear to the poor and give him a friendly answer with meekness 9 Deliver him that suffereth wrongs from the hand of the oppressour and be not faint-hearted when thou sittest in judgement 10 Be as a father unto the fatherless and in stead of an husband unto their mother so shalt thou be as the son of the most High and he shall love thee more then thy mother doth 11 Wisdom exalteth her children and layeth hold of them that seek her 12 He that loveth her loveth life and they that seek to her early shall be filled with joy 13 He that holdeth her fast shall inherit glory and wheresoever she entreth the Lord will bless 14 They that serve her shall minister ‖ Or in the sanctuary to the holy One and them that love her the Lord doth love 15 Whoso giveth ear unto her shall judge the nations and he that attendeth unto her shall dwell securely 16 If a man commit himself unto her he shall inherit her and his generation shall hold her in possession 17 For at the first she will walk with him by crooked ways and bring fear and dread upon him and torment him with her discipline until she may trust his soul and try him by her laws 18 Then will she return the straight way unto him and comfort him and shew him her secrets 19 But if he go wrong she will forsake him and give him over to his own ruine 20 Observe the opportunity and beware of evil and be not ashamed when it concerneth thy soul 21 For there is a shame that bringeth sin and there is a shame which is glory and grace 22 Accept no person against thy soul and let not the reverence of any man cause thee to fall 23 And refrain not to speak †Or in time of
from beneath I am from above ye are of this world I am not of this world 24 I said therefore unto you that ye shall die in your sins for if ye beleeve not that I am he ye shall die in your sins 25 Then said thâ—y unto him Who art thou And Jesus saith unto them Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning 26 I have many things to say and to judge of you but he that sent me is true and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him 27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father 28 Then said â—esâ—â— unto them When ye haâ—e lift up the Son of man then shall ye know that I am he and that I do nothing of myself but as my Father hath taught me I speak these things 29 And he that sent me is with me the Father hath not left me alone for I do always those things that please him 30 As he sâ—ake these words many beleeved on him Then said Jesus to those Jews which beleeved on him If ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed 32 And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free 33 ¶ They answered him We be Abrahams seed and were never in bondage to any man how sayest thou Ye shall be made free 34 Jesu answered them Verily verily I say unto you * Rom. 6.20 1 Pet. 2.19 Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever but the Son abideth ever 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed 37 I know that ye are Abrahams seed but ye seek to kill me because my word hath no place in you 38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father and ye do that which ye have seen with your father 39 They answered and said unto him Abraham is our father Jesus saith unto them If ye were Abrahams children ye would do the works of Abraham 40 But now ye seek to kill me a man that hath told you the truth which I have heard of God this did not Abraham 41 Ye do the deeds of your father Then said they to him We be not born of fornication we have one Father even God 42 Jesus said unto them If God were your Father ye would love me for I proceeded forth and came from God neither came I of my self but he sent me 43 Why do ye not understand my speech even because ye cannot hear my word 44 * 1 John 3.8 Ye are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father ye will do he was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him When he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it 45 And because I tell you the truth ye beleeve me not 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin And if I say the truth why do ye not beleeve me 47 * 1 John 4.6 He that is of God heareth Gods words ye therefore hear them not because ye are not of God 48 Then answered the Jews and said unto him Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil 49 Jesus answered I have not a devil but I honour my Father and ye do dishonour me 50 And I seek not mine own glory there is one that seeketh judgeth 51 Verily verily I say unto you If a man keep my saying he shall never see death 52 Then said the Jews unto him Now we know that thou hast a devil Abraham is dead and the prophets and thou sayest If a man keep my saying he shall never taste of death 53 Art thou greater then our father Abraham which is dead and the prophets are dead whom makest thou thy self 54 Jesus answered If I honour my self my honour is nothing it is my Father that honoureth me of whom ye say that he is your God 55 Yet ye have not known him but I know him and if I should say I know him not I shall be a liar like unto you but I know him and keep his saying 56 Your father Abraham rejoyced to see my day and he saw it and was glad 57 Then said the Jews unto him Thou art not yet fifty years old and hast thou seen Abraham 58 Jesus said unto them Verily verily I say unto you Before Abraham was I am 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him but Jesus hid himself went out of the temple going through the midst of them so passed by CHAP. IX 1 The man that was born blinde restored to sight 8 He is brought to the Pharisees 13 They are offended at it and excommunicate him 35 but he is received of Jesus and confesseth him 39 Who they are whom Christ enlightneth ANd as Jesus passed by he saw a man which was blinde from his birth 2 And his disciples asked him saying Master who did sin this man or his parents that he was born blinde 3 Jesus answered Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him 4 I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day the night cometh when no man can work 5 As long as I am in the world * Chap. 1.9 I am the light of the world 6 When he had thus spoken he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he ‖ Or spread the clay upon the eyes of the blinde man anointed the eyes of the blinde man with the clay 7 And said unto him Go wash in the pool of Siloam which is by interpretation Sent. have you ignorant 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols even as ye were led 3 Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus ‖ Or anathema accursed and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the holy Ghost 4 Now * Rom. 12.4 c. there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit 5 And there are differences of administrations but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations but it is the same God which worketh all in all 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit 9 To another faith by the same Spirit to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit 10 To another the working of miracles to another prophesie to another discerning of spirits to another divers kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues 11 But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit dividing to every man severally as he will 12 For as the body is one and hath many members and all the members of that one body being many are one body so also is Christ 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body whether we be Jews or †Gr. Greeks Gentiles whether we be bond or free and have been all made to drink into one Spirit 14 For the body is not one member but many 15 If the foot shall say Because I am not the hand I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 16 And if the ear shall say Because I am not the eye I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 17 If the whole body were an eye where were the hearing if the whole were hearing where were the smelling 18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him 19 And if they were all one member where were the body 20 But now are they many members yet but one body 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand I have no need of thee nor again the head to the feet I have no need of you 22 Nay much more those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honourable upon these we ‖ Or put on bestow more abundant honour and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness 24 For our comely parts have no need but God hath tempered the body together having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked 25 That there should be no ‖ Or division schism in the body but that the members should have the same care one for another 26 And whether one member suffer all the members suffer with it or one member be honoured all the members rejoyce with it 27 Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular 28 And * Eph. 4.11 God hath set some in the church first apostles secondarily prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles then gifts of healings helps governments ‖ Or kinds diversities of tongues 29 Are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers are all ‖ Or powers workers of miracles 30 Have all the gifts of healing do all speak with tongues do all interpret 31 But covet earnestly the best gifts And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way CHAP. XIII 1 All gifts 2 3 how excellent soever are nothing worth without charity 4 The praises thereof and 13 prelation before hope and faith THough I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal 2 And though I have the gift of prophesie and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have no charity I am nothing 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned have not charity it profiteth me nothing 4 Charity suffereth long and is kinde charity envieth not charity ‖ Or is not rash vaunteth not itself is not puffed up 5 Doth not behave it self unseemly seeketh not her own is not easily provoked thinketh no evil 6 Rejoyceth not in iniquity but rejoyceth ‖ Or with the truth in the truth 7 Beareth all things beleeveth all things hopeth all things endureth all things 8 Charity never faileth but whether there be prophesies they shall fail whether there be tongues they shall cease whether there be knowledge it shall vanish away 9 For we know in part and we prophesie in part 10 But when that which is perfect is come then that which is in part shall be done away 11 When I was a childe I spake as a childe I understood as a childe I ‖ Or reasoned thought as a childe but when I became a man I put away childish things 12 For now we see through a glass †Gr. in a riddle darkly but then face to face now I know in part but then shall I know even as also I am known 13 And now abideth faith hope charity these three but the greatest of these is charity CHAP. XIV 1 Prophesie is commended 2 3 4 and preferred before speaking with tongues 6 by a comparison drawn from musical instruments 12 Both must be referred to edification 22 as to their true and proper end 26 The true use of each is taught 29 and the abuse taxed 34 Women are forbidden to speak in the church FOllow after charity and desire spiritual gifts but rather that ye may prophesie 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God for no man †Gr. beareth understandeth him howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification and exhortation and comfort 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself but he that prophesieth edifieth the church 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied for greater is he that prophesieth then he that speaketh with tongues except he interpret that the church may receive edifying 6 Now brethren if I come unto you speaking with tongues what shall I profit you except I shall speak to you either by revelation or by knowledge or by prophesying or by doctrine 7 And even things without life giving sound whether pipe or harp except they give a distinction in the ‖ Or a tunes sounds how shall it be known what is piped or harped 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself to the battel 9 So likewise you except ye utter by the tongue words †Gr. significant easie to be understood how shall
