leave_v our_o great_a earthly_a content_n so_o to_o expose_v ourselves_o to_o a_o world_n of_o trouble_n thus_o the_o world_n call_v light_a darkness_n and_o darkness_n light_n esteem_v that_o pride_n which_o indeed_o be_v true_a humility_n shall_v we_o now_o take_v a_o further_a scantling_n what_o this_o spiritual_a pride_n may_v be_v sure_o i_o take_v it_o it_o consist_v in_o these_o thing_n first_o in_o presume_v above_o that_o be_v meet_v in_o matter_n of_o knowledge_n and_o that_o when_o we_o pry_v into_o those_o hide_a mystery_n which_o either_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v know_v of_o or_o be_v apparent_a only_o to_o the_o divine_a nature_n second_o when_o we_o vanish_v in_o idle_a and_o curious_a speculation_n tend_v only_o to_o sense_n and_o singularity_n and_o not_o to_o edification_n 1_o tim._n 4._o three_o when_o we_o affect_v knowledge_n for_o complement_n or_o ornament_n and_o not_o for_o reformation_n of_o life_n second_o spiritual_a pride_n be_v see_v in_o matter_n of_o action_n and_o that_o either_o in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o or_o other_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o we_o may_v be_v overtake_v with_o spiritual_a pride_n 1._o if_o we_o stand_v more_o upon_o public_a devotion_n then_o private_a humiliation_n 2._o if_o we_o rest_v more_o in_o the_o form_n then_o in_o the_o power_n of_o religion_n 3._o if_o we_o rest_v in_o ourselves_o for_o well_o do_v and_o not_o on_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n 4._o if_o we_o challenge_v merit_n for_o our_o work_n and_o not_o rely_v on_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n 5._o if_o we_o arrogate_v more_o unto_o ourselves_o then_o either_o be_v truth_n or_o convenient_a 6._o if_o imagine_v that_o we_o may_v be_v present_a in_o this_o life_n and_o have_v a_o overplus_n of_o righteousness_n for_o other_o and_o will_v not_o follow_v our_o master_n through_o the_o fire_n in_o regard_n of_o other_o we_o may_v be_v taint_v with_o spiritual_a pride_n 1._o if_o we_o forsake_v the_o fellowship_n and_o be_v not_o equal_a with_o those_o of_o the_o low_a sort_n leave_v the_o church_n for_o corruption_n therein_o 2._o if_o we_o judge_v peremptory_o of_o any_o before_o the_o time_n 3._o if_o we_o give_v not_o unto_o each_o his_o due_a howsoever_o we_o be_v
either_o of_o doubt_v in_o faith_n or_o corruption_n in_o life_n 1._o cor._n 8._o rom._n 14._o 4._o that_o herein_o also_o we_o not_o only_o avoid_v what_o may_v hurt_v but_o in_o all_o spiritual_a wisdom_n do_v that_o which_o may_v further_o to_o the_o best_a good_a even_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n 1._o cor._n 9_o 5._o and_o all_o this_o to_o the_o only_a praise_n of_o our_o these_o false_a imputation_n but_o say_v what_o other_o fasten_v upon_o i_o love_n 8._o whether_o want_n of_o feel_v of_o former_a comfort_n may_v be_v a_o just_a imputation_n that_o we_o have_v leave_v our_o first_o love_n that_o i_o fear_v in_o myself_o i_o feel_v not_o that_o joy_n and_o inward_a comfort_n i_o sometime_o have_v these_o overflowing_n and_o extraordinary_a sweetness_n though_o i_o faint_v after_o they_o and_o refresh_v my_o soul_n with_o the_o meditation_n thereof_o yet_o i_o find_v they_o not_o so_o abound_v and_o run_v over_o as_o in_o former_a time_n may_v i_o not_o hereby_o conjecture_v that_o i_o have_v lose_v my_o first_o love_n nay_o may_v i_o not_o fear_v that_o all_o be_v lose_v nay_o now_o i_o find_v it_o contrary_n with_o i_o instead_o of_o joy_n i_o be_o overwhelm_v with_o sorrow_n instead_o of_o god_n gracious_a presence_n i_o fear_v he_o have_v forsake_v i_o i_o have_v no_o answer_n in_o prayer_n no_o comfort_n in_o any_o duty_n the_o sorrow_n of_o the_o deep_a do_v seize_v upon_o i_o and_o the_o jaw_n of_o hell_n do_v gape_v upon_o i_o sure_o the_o lord_n give_v thou_o wisdom_n herein_o that_o thou_o do_v not_o wrong_v thy_o own_o heart_n and_o prejudice_v the_o wisdom_n and_o mercy_n of_o thy_o god_n remember_v that_o thou_o live_v by_o faith_n &_o not_o by_o sense_n 2._o cor._n 3.7_o though_o thou_o see_v no_o outward_a believe_v above_o feeling_n thus_o be_v thy_o faith_n perfect_v even_o lay_v hold_n on_o thing_n not_o see_v when_o it_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o sense_n of_o thing_n past_a 11.1_o heb._n 11.1_o &_o present_a and_o may_v not_o thy_o god_n withdraw_v these_o comfort_n from_o thou_o for_o the_o further_a trial_n of_o thy_o faith_n and_o love_n unto_o his_o majesty_n that_o though_o thou_o want_v which_o be_v before_o by_o the_o power_n of_o thy_o faith_n see_v a_o far_o off_o yea_o lay_v fast_o hold_v on_o eternal_a life_n by_o renew_v thy_o strength_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o see_v we_o be_v now_o assure_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o conversion_n by_o this_o seal_n of_o god_n love_v shed_v abroad_o in_o our_o heart_n work_v in_o we_o a_o fear_n of_o his_o majesty_n and_o refresh_v our_o heart_n with_o unspeakable_a comfort_n have_v we_o now_o such_o need_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o they_o as_o if_o all_o be_v lose_v because_o we_o still_o feel_v they_o not_o or_o we_o can_v not_o go_v forward_o without_o the_o daily_a sense_n thereof_o will_v we_o still_o be_v child_n that_o have_v need_n of_o dandle_v and_o enttice_v with_o such_o toy_n or_o rather_o be_v we_o not_o grow_v to_o be_v man_n and_o so_o to_o be_v harden_v with_o trial_n and_o strange_a abasing_n and_o be_v it_o not_o best_o to_o be_v abase_v within_o that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o any_o outward_a empty_n be_v it_o not_o fit_a to_o be_v a_o while_n disuse_v of_o these_o spiritual_a joy_n that_o so_o we_o may_v most_o hunger_n after_o everlasting_a joy_n that_o we_o more_o earnest_o labour_n and_o hasten_v thereafter_o and_o may_v we_o not_o give_v our_o god_n just_a cause_n to_o withdraw_v his_o countenance_n from_o we_o by_o fall_v into_o gross_a sin_n dote_v on_o the_o fade_a joy_n of_o the_o world_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o we_o may_v be_v so_o wise_o scant_v of_o perfect_a joy_n as_o that_o still_o we_o shall_v be_v recompense_v with_o what_o be_v fit_a for_o we_o for_o the_o present_a with_o what_o may_v further_o we_o to_o eternal_a comfort_n be_v not_o the_o lord_n herein_o wonderful_a that_o by_o withdraw_a sense_n of_o present_a joy_n he_o both_o purge_v we_o of_o such_o evil_n as_o may_v corrupt_v the_o same_o namely_o spiritual_a pride_n and_o security_n and_o also_o cause_v we_o hereby_o to_o lay_v fast_o hold_v on_o jesus_n christ_n who_o only_o must_v perfect_v the_o work_n that_o be_v begin_v in_o we_o and_o can_v thou_o express_v thy_o love_n in_o great_a measure_n unto_o thy_o god_n then_o to_o love_v he_o then_o when_o he_o seem_v to_o have_v forsake_v thou_o then_o to_o follow_v after_o he_o when_o he_o seem_v to_o run_v from_o thou_o do_v not_o this_o advance_v the_o sincerity_n of_o thy_o love_n do_v not_o this_o exceed_o approve_v thy_o conformity_n to_o thy_o saviour_n that_o as_o he_o be_v content_v to_o be_v abase_v in_o himself_o yea_o to_o become_v of_o no_o reputation_n that_o thou_o may_v be_v accept_v so_o thou_o be_v content_v to_o be_v empty_v that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v thou_o can_v willing_o want_v present_a comfort_n that_o thy_o god_n may_v have_v unfeigned_a worship_n when_o now_o not_o so_o much_o for_o thy_o own_o sake_n as_o for_o his_o glory_n thou_o do_v believe_v in_o he_o when_o though_o he_o kill_v thou_o yet_o thou_o will_v trust_v in_o he_o and_o can_v thou_o be_v a_o loose_a where_o the_o lord_n be_v such_o a_o gainer_n by_o thou_o can_v thou_o leave_v thy_o love_n when_o the_o lord_n do_v purpose_n to_o try_v the_o soundness_n of_o it_o when_o the_o lord_n provoke_v thou_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n when_o by_o the_o power_n of_o faith_n he_o will_v thus_o enable_v thou_o to_o lay_v hold_n of_o eternal_a life_n note_n note_n sure_o as_o this_o be_v the_o life_n of_o faith_n to_o exceed_v present_a sense_n so_o this_o want_n of_o present_a comfort_n thus_o conceive_v and_o apply_v shall_v be_v both_o a_o mean_n to_o enable_v thou_o to_o make_v better_a use_n of_o such_o joy_n when_o the_o lord_n shall_v again_o turn_v his_o countenance_n upon_o thou_o and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n minister_v exceed_v comfort_n unto_o thy_o soul_n that_o thou_o do_v constant_o believe_v in_o herein_o resolution_n herein_o and_o unfeigned_o love_v the_o lord_n thy_o god_n and_o therefore_o doubt_v not_o herein_o of_o any_o decay_n of_o thy_o love_n unto_o thy_o god_n because_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o wisdom_n for_o thy_o trial_n withdraw_v the_o present_a pledge_n of_o his_o love_n from_o thou_o for_o neither_o can_v thou_o endure_v at_o all_o in_o thy_o sense_n of_o this_o want_n of_o present_a comfort_n if_o thy_o god_n do_v not_o secret_o uphold_v thou_o with_o inward_a and_o unspeakable_a consolation_n and_o in_o that_o thou_o discerne_v want_v of_o joy_n
