without_o a_o interest_n in_o christ_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n shall_v be_v everlasting_a as_o shall_v more_o full_o be_v evince_v in_o my_o reply_n to_o his_o next_o chapter_n and_o shall_v find_v he_o to_o be_v most_o positive_a and_o peremptory_a in_o his_o assertion_n of_o what_o he_o here_o pretend_v to_o lay_v down_o only_o as_o a_o probable_a supposition_n and_o that_o in_o the_o very_a next_o section_n which_o be_v a_o full_a evidence_n that_o this_o pretend_a modesty_n of_o he_o serve_v only_o for_o a_o bait_n to_o the_o hook_n which_o be_v by_o he_o let_v down_o to_o be_v distinguish_v in_o poenam_fw-la sensus_fw-la &_o poenam_fw-la damni_fw-la into_o the_o punishment_n of_o sense_n and_o punishment_n of_o loss_n the_o one_o be_v signify_v in_o those_o text_n that_o speak_v of_o their_o be_v shut_v out_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o the_o like_a the_o other_o of_o those_o that_o speak_v of_o their_o be_v cast_v into_o a_o lake_n that_o burn_v with_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n their_o be_v torment_a day_n and_o night_n etc._n etc._n but_o that_o there_o be_v any_o part_n of_o their_o punishment_n which_o be_v not_o penal_a and_o that_o this_o punishment_n of_o loss_n be_v to_o be_v distinguish_v from_o that_o which_o be_v so_o be_v such_o a_o contradiction_n as_o i_o think_v be_v peculiar_a to_o mr._n collier_n who_o have_v here_o furnish_v we_o with_o this_o distinction_n thus_o we_o may_v see_v the_o beginning_n of_o the_o word_n of_o his_o mouth_n be_v foolishness_n and_o the_o end_n of_o his_o talk_n be_v like_a to_o prove_v mischievous_a madness_n eccles_n 10._o 13._o and_o whereas_o mr._n collier_n suppose_v the_o duration_n of_o their_o punishment_n of_o loss_n who_o be_v damn_v shall_v be_v eternal_a but_o not_o that_o of_o sense_n he_o be_v utter_o without_o any_o probable_a ground_n in_o scripture_n or_o right_a reason_n for_o his_o opinion_n for_o although_o their_o suffering_n be_v sometime_o eternal_o be_v punish_v with_o the_o loss_n of_o good_a but_o not_o with_o the_o feel_n of_o evil_n but_o both_o be_v â—n_a scripture_n inseparable_o link_v together_o both_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o subject_n of_o they_o and_o their_o duration_n who_o shall_v be_v punish_v with_o everlasting_a destruction_n from_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o power_n 2_o thes_n 1._o 9_o which_o certain_o speak_v the_o punishment_n both_o of_o sense_n and_o loss_n and_o the_o duration_n of_o both_o to_o be_v alike_o and_o that_o the_o positive_a part_n of_o their_o punishment_n or_o as_o mr._n c._n term_n it_o their_o pain_n inflict_v shall_v be_v eternal_a the_o scripture_n be_v express_v which_o say_v more_o than_o once_o that_o they_o shall_v go_v into_o what_o countenance_n mr._n c._n give_v to_o his_o notion_n his_o first_o plea_n be_v the_o scripture_n let_v we_o know_v that_o some_o shall_v be_v save_v that_o through_o their_o own_o miscarriage_n shall_v loose_v the_o reward_n of_o their_o own_o work_n 1_o cor._n 3._o 14_o 15._o they_o shall_v be_v save_v yet_o so_o as_o by_o fire_n and_o what_o that_o fire_n be_v and_o how_o far_o it_o shall_v extend_v at_o and_o after_o the_o judgement_n i_o must_v leave_v to_o he_o that_o know_v all_o thing_n to_o determine_v etc._n etc._n this_o text_n be_v by_o the_o papist_n abusive_o apply_v to_o their_o purgatory_n and_o it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v their_o reason_n from_o it_o have_v as_o much_o probability_n as_o mr._n collier_n though_o both_o they_o and_o he_o do_v miserable_o wrest_v it_o he_o confess_v that_o he_o neither_o know_v what_o this_o fire_n be_v nor_o how_o far_o it_o shall_v extend_v he_o may_v well_o excuse_v we_o therefore_o if_o we_o refuse_v to_o take_v one_o and_o manifest_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o other_o and_o see_v mr._n c._n in_o his_o follow_a line_n though_o without_o give_v any_o sufficient_a reason_n therefore_o do_v reject_v the_o interpretation_n of_o those_o that_o refer_v this_o to_o any_o time_n or_o trial_n before_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n i_o will_v not_o contend_v with_o he_o thereabouts_o but_o grant_v its_o respect_n to_o that_o time_n consider_v what_o must_v then_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o text_n which_o can_v be_v extend_v no_o far_o then_o to_o signify_v to_o we_o 1._o that_o in_o the_o great_a day_n every_o man_n work_n shall_v be_v strict_o examine_v and_o prove_v of_o what_o sort_n it_o be_v 2._o that_o those_o work_n which_o have_v not_o be_v wrought_v
or_o more_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n be_v the_o eternal_a duration_n of_o the_o saint_n life_n and_o happiness_n in_o another_o world_n express_v thereby_o and_o frequent_o the_o everlasting_a torment_n of_o the_o wicked_a be_v so_o also_o as_o have_v be_v before_o urge_v and_o every_o one_o may_v see_v how_o preposterous_a a_o course_n it_o will_v be_v because_o the_o term_n be_v once_o use_v figurative_o in_o a_o limit_a sense_n which_o the_o subject_n there_o treat_v of_o and_o scope_n of_o the_o place_n do_v enforce_v therefore_o to_o limit_v it_o in_o all_o other_o place_n where_o it_o do_v occur_v although_o there_o be_v not_o only_o no_o reason_n for_o it_o but_o also_o in_o the_o thing_n speak_v of_o a_o utter_a repugnancy_n to_o such_o a_o limitation_n and_o if_o mr._n collier_n know_v these_o thing_n already_o he_o be_v far_o from_o upright_a deal_n in_o this_o business_n if_o he_o know_v they_o not_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o great_a temerity_n in_o publish_v such_o thing_n as_o these_o to_o the_o world_n at_o all_o adventure_n much_o more_o may_v be_v add_v but_o i_o must_v hasten_v in_o the_o last_o branch_n of_o his_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n p._n 52._o he_o have_v recourse_n again_o to_o his_o former_a distinction_n and_o allow_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o wicked_a to_o be_v eternal_a in_o respect_n of_o their_o loss_n but_o the_o vanity_n of_o this_o have_v be_v already_o detect_v and_o my_o answer_n thereto_o need_v not_o be_v here_o repeat_v the_o next_o thing_n he_o attempt_v be_v to_o clear_v his_o doctrine_n fâ—om_o a_o lie_v in_o the_o fiery_a lake_n some_o perhaps_o a_o 100_o some_o a_o 1000_o and_o some_o perhaps_o 10000_o year_n etc._n etc._n thus_o he_o will_v interpret_v everlasting_a punishment_n to_o be_v lie_v in_o the_o fiery_a lake_n perhaps_o a_o hundred_o year_n yea_o according_o to_o his_o principle_n perhaps_o it_o may_v not_o be_v a_o hundred_o day_n no_o nor_o a_o hundred_o hour_n neither_o for_o if_o they_o repent_v which_o he_o suppose_v they_o may_v and_o shall_v do_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o christ_n remain_v the_o same_o to_o procure_v their_o pardon_n then_o as_o now_o and_o no_o doubt_n he_o will_v allow_v they_o the_o same_o power_n and_o freewill_n to_o repent_v there_o as_o here_o so_o that_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o find_v the_o place_n displease_v to_o they_o they_o may_v repent_v and_o repent_v may_v obtain_v mercy_n and_o deliverance_n out_o of_o it_o and_o if_o this_o be_v true_a there_o be_v nothing_o can_v be_v devise_v more_o effectual_a to_o encourage_v a_o wicked_a life_n as_o on_o the_o contrary_a the_o doctrine_n of_o eternal_a judgement_n do_v make_v sinner_n tremble_v and_o by_o it_o they_o be_v restrain_v from_o much_o wickedness_n which_o they_o with_o this_o vain_a hope_n that_o will_v prove_v as_o the_o give_v up_o of_o the_o ghost_n 2._o on_o two_o account_n his_o doctrine_n in_o this_o point_n be_v more_o gross_a than_o the_o papist_n for_o 1._o they_o make_v believer_n fideles_fw-la suppose_v to_o die_v in_o venial_a sin_n the_o subject_n of_o their_o purgatory_n but_o mr._n c._n will_v indulge_v the_o sodomite_n yea_o all_o that_o have_v not_o sin_v against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o pass_v through_o his_o purgatory_n unto_o forgiveness_n and_o ease_n 2._o they_o place_v their_o purgatory_n before_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o final_a sentence_n so_o that_o they_o do_v not_o so_o direct_o oppose_v that_o fundamental_a article_n concern_v the_o eternal_a judgement_n as_o he_o do_v nor_o suppose_v any_o possibility_n of_o sinner_n obtain_v a_o change_n of_o their_o condition_n after_o the_o sentence_n be_v pass_v by_o the_o great_a judge_n which_o yet_o mr._n c._n have_v the_o boldness_n to_o plead_v for_o there_o be_v other_o unsavoury_a notion_n couch_v in_o his_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n viz._n that_o ordinary_o sinner_n do_v not_o come_v under_o any_o judgement_n or_o suffer_v any_o punishment_n before_o the_o great_a day_n etc._n etc._n but_o i_o must_v pass_v over_o they_o at_o present_a only_a mind_n how_o contrary_a this_o be_v to_o what_o we_o be_v teach_v in_o luk._n 16._o
