dangerous_a hindrance_n to_o true_a religion_n that_o heretical_a book_n may_v be_v public_o sell_v to_o any_o one_o that_o will_v buy_v they_o without_o due_a consideration_n whether_o the_o party_n have_v gift_n to_o discern_v of_o truth_n from_o falsehood_n in_o the_o popish_a church_n they_o be_v more_o careful_a they_o permit_v not_o a_o man_n to_o read_v a_o heretic_n book_n as_o they_o call_v we_o protestant_n without_o leave_n and_o that_o under_o a_o great_a penalty_n which_o be_v severe_o inflict_v upon_o offender_n that_o way_n v._o instruct._n this_o commandment_n also_o show_v vain_a quiddity_n in_o philosophy_n and_o in_o hide_a mystery_n of_o divinity_n by_o which_o mean_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o popery_n and_o apostasy_n from_o the_o truth_n spread_v itself_o over_o the_o world_n for_o many_o hundred_o year_n together_o afterwards_o god_n of_o his_o mere_a mercy_n put_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o some_o man_n to_o be_v careful_a searcher_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n by_o which_o mean_v the_o truth_n appear_v as_o light_v out_o of_o darkness_n thus_o god_n stir_v up_o luther_n about_o the_o year_n of_o our_o lord_n conversion_n 1517._o who_o by_o diligent_a search_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o especial_o by_o serious_a meditation_n with_o prayer_n upon_o these_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n roman_n 3._o 21._o that_o now_o by_o the_o gospel_n doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o so_o by_o further_a diligence_n and_o industry_n in_o the_o scripture_n the_o truth_n of_o god_n shine_v forth_o more_o and_o more_o let_v all_o man_n but_o especial_o student_n in_o divinity_n consider_v this_o effect_n of_o search_v out_o the_o scripture_n as_o a_o spur_n to_o diligence_n in_o this_o behalf_n by_o this_o mean_n also_o error_n and_o heresy_n be_v avoid_v and_o suppress_v &_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v plain_o reveal_v and_o here_o by_o the_o way_n we_o may_v see_v how_o profitable_a and_o necessary_a the_o gift_n of_o interpretation_n be_v it_o be_v a_o most_o excellent_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n pertain_v to_o the_o ministry_n and_o therefore_o most_o commendable_a &_o necessary_a be_v the_o use_n thereof_o in_o school_n of_o learning_n eight_o this_o immutabilitie_n ascribe_v to_o god_n law_n that_o every_o part_n thereof_o shall_v be_v accomplish_v to_o the_o full_a teach_v all_o prince_n and_o magistrate_n belong_v also_o unto_o all_o magistrate_n master_n and_o parent_n within_o their_o place_n and_o charge_n they_o must_v be_v careful_a to_o see_v the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n practise_v and_o obey_v both_o in_o their_o own_o person_n and_o of_o those_o that_o be_v under_o they_o last_o by_o this_o immutabilitie_n ascribe_v to_o the_o law_n we_o may_v learn_v law_n what_o it_o be_v to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n namely_o to_o keep_v and_o observe_v to_o the_o full_a every_o particular_a thing_n which_o the_o law_n command_v we_o and_o upon_o this_o we_o may_v ground_v two_o conclusion_n against_o the_o papist_n first_o that_o no_o man_n can_v come_v to_o life_n everlasting_a by_o his_o own_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n for_o he_o that_o will_v come_v to_o heaven_n by_o his_o own_o righteousness_n must_v be_v able_a to_o fulfil_v the_o whole_a law_n perfect_o in_o every_o respect_n but_o since_o adam_n fall_n no_o man_n can_v keep_v the_o law_n in_o all_o thing_n save_v our_o saviour_n christ_n both_o god_n and_o man_n second_o that_o our_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n must_v be_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n for_o he_o only_o be_v answerable_a to_o the_o whole_a law_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o will_v come_v to_o heaven_n we_o must_v not_o come_v in_o our_o own_o righteousness_n but_o in_o he_o as_o paul_n wish_v to_o be_v find_v of_o testament_n be_v now_o abolish_v and_o the_o church_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n be_v ready_a to_o take_v place_n
god_n will_v continue_v the_o truth_n of_o his_o will_n to_o we_o and_o to_o our_o posterity_n for_o ever_o the_o second_o conclusion_n whosoever_o shall_v keep_v they_o and_o teach_v man_n so_o the_o same_o shall_v be_v call_v great_a in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n that_o be_v he_o shall_v be_v honour_v in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o esteem_v a_o worthy_a member_n thereof_o because_o experience_n of_o the_o fruit_n and_o efficacy_n of_o the_o word_n in_o his_o own_o person_n be_v the_o best_a commentary_n a_o man_n can_v have_v for_o the_o open_n of_o it_o unto_o other_o the_o write_n of_o man_n with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o art_n and_o tongue_n be_v excellent_a help_n yet_o if_o a_o man_n want_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n frame_v his_o heart_n to_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o word_n he_o teach_v whereby_o he_o shall_v become_v a_o doer_n of_o it_o doubtless_o the_o word_n will_v seem_v but_o a_o dream_n or_o riddle_n unto_o he_o neither_o can_v he_o fit_o apply_v the_o same_o unto_o other_o have_v never_o have_v experience_n of_o it_o in_o his_o own_o soul_n this_o than_o shall_v move_v all_o minister_n and_o such_o as_o set_v themselves_o to_o this_o call_n first_o and_o chief_o to_o labour_v to_o become_v doer_n of_o the_o word_n themselves_o other_o help_n of_o learning_n be_v to_o be_v fight_v for_o with_o all_o diligence_n to_o make_v they_o fit_a and_o able_a minister_n of_o so_o great_a mystery_n but_o especial_o they_o must_v labour_v for_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n to_o frame_v their_o heart_n to_o embrace_v and_o their_o life_n to_o obey_v the_o word_n which_o they_o teach_v that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v fit_v according_a to_o our_o saviour_n christ_n direction_n now_o this_o spirit_n be_v attain_v by_o knock_v ut_fw-la heaâ—â—n_a gate_n by_o prayer_n luke_n 11._o 13._o and_o by_o open_v the_o door_n of_o our_o heart_n when_o our_o saviour_n christ_n knock_v thereat_o by_o his_o woâ—d_n revel_v 3._o 20._o second_o in_o â—aying_v down_o this_o duty_n our_o saviour_n christ_n propound_v untowardness_n a_o singular_a comfort_n to_o such_o faithful_a minister_n as_o be_v grieve_v with_o the_o untowardness_n of_o yet_o see_v their_o teacher_n and_o people_n have_v in_o they_o and_o among_o they_o the_o necessary_a fruit_n of_o antichristian_a prophet_n and_o people_n we_o can_v thereby_o assure_v ourselves_o they_o be_v corrupt_v and_o
though_o we_o can_v see_v the_o shadow_n of_o the_o sun_n move_v yet_o we_o may_v perceive_v that_o it_o do_v mooâ—e_v now_o by_o their_o fruit_n it_o be_v clear_a they_o be_v corrupt_a for_o they_o reverse_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n both_o in_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n and_o in_o the_o article_n of_o faith_n first_o they_o disannul_v the_o first_o commandment_n by_o make_v to_o themselves_o other_o god_n beside_o the_o true_a god_n for_o they_o 304_o pray_v unto_o saint_n and_o therein_o acknowledge_v a_o divine_a propriety_n in_o they_o and_o also_o give_v unto_o they_o the_o honour_n due_a to_o god_n alone_o and_o so_o set_v up_o unto_o themselves_o the_o creature_n in_o the_o room_n of_o the_o creator_n the_o second_o they_o reverse_v by_o worship_v and_o god_n himself_o and_o dead_a man_n in_o image_n &_o christ_n himself_o in_o the_o crucifix_n yea_o in_o a_o piece_n of_o 3._o bread_n wherein_o they_o match_v the_o gross_a idolatry_n aâ—ong_v the_o heathen_a and_o the_o best_a learned_a among_o they_o teach_v that_o the_o rood_n the_o 4._o cross_n and_o crucifix_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v with_o the_o same_o worship_n wherewith_o christ_n himself_o be_v worship_v in_o the_o 6._o command_n touch_v murder_n they_o condemn_v the_o kill_a one_o of_o another_o but_o yet_o if_o a_o priest_n come_v from_o the_o pope_n &_o kill_v a_o protestant_a prince_n the_o lord_n anoint_a king_n or_o queen_n that_o be_v not_o only_o no_o sin_n but_o a_o 1589._o â—â—â—t_o notable_a rare_a and_o memorable_a work_n against_o the_o 7._o commandment_n they_o maintain_v 19_o the_o vow_n of_o single_a life_n necessary_a in_o their_o religious_a order_n whereby_o as_o also_o by_o their_o stue_n they_o cause_v all_o filthiness_n &_o his_o kingly_a and_o prophetical_a office_n between_o he_o and_o the_o pope_n and_o his_o priesthood_n between_o he_o and_o every_o popish_a priest_n as_o we_o have_v show_v before_o so_o that_o by_o these_o fruit_n we_o plain_o see_v their_o apostasy_n which_o be_v enough_o though_o we_o know_v not_o when_o and_o by_o who_o it_o come_v 2._o use_v here_o also_o we_o have_v to_o answer_v such_o among_o ourselves_o as_o renounce_v brownist_n our_o church_n as_o be_v no_o true_a church_n of_o christ_n because_o say_v they_o we_o want_v true_a minister_n and_o so_o have_v not_o a_o right_a ministry_n among_o us._n but_o hence_o we_o answer_v that_o we_o have_v the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n and_o our_o minister_n be_v the_o true_a minister_n of_o god_n for_o proof_n hereof_o our_o minister_n have_v the_o outward_a call_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n they_o say_v indeed_o our_o call_n be_v nought_o because_o they_o have_v power_n from_o god_n to_o call_v in_o who_o hand_n it_o be_v but_o to_o omit_v that_o question_n for_o this_o time_n sufficient_a approbation_n of_o our_o ministry_n may_v be_v have_v from_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o minister_n as_o they_o be_v minister_n for_o to_o leave_v the_o fruit_n of_o their_o life_n as_o sufficient_a mean_n to_o judge_v they_o by_o our_o minister_n teach_v through_o god_n blessing_n the_o true_a and_o wholesome_a doctrine_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n and_o be_v allove_v and_o call_v hereto_o by_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n and_o accept_v of_o their_o people_n who_o obedience_n to_o the_o faith_n be_v the_o seal_n of_o their_o ministry_n and_o this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o confirm_v the_o call_n of_o our_o minister_n if_o it_o have_v not_o christ_n will_v not_o have_v say_v you_o shall_v know_v they_o by_o their_o fruit_n 3._o use._n whereas_o christ_n say_v you_o shall_v know_v they_o speak_v to_o all_o his_o teacher_n hearer_n he_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o every_o believer_n may_v be_v able_a to_o judge_v of_o false_a prophet_n and_o therefore_o every_o one_o in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n ought_v to_o labour_v for_o so_o much_o knowledge_n whereby_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o know_v a_o teacher_n by_o his_o fruit_n and_o doctrine_n this_o then_o show_v that_o every_o one_o ought_v to_o know_v the_o sum_n of_o true_a religion_n comprise_v in_o the_o article_n of_o faith_n and_o in_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n both_o for_o their_o true_a meaning_n and_o right_a and_o profitable_a use_n unto_o themselves_o which_o thing_n i_o note_v because_o i_o know_v many_o deceive_v themselves_o herein_o think_v that_o god_n will_v excuse_v they_o for_o their_o want_n of_o knowledge_n because_o they_o be_v not_o booke-learned_n but_o let_v whereas_o wholesome_a doctrine_n out_o of_o scripture_n be_v a_o note_n liver_n of_o a_o true_a prophet_n it_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o may_v lawful_o use_v the_o ministry_n of_o those_o man_n who_o life_n and_o conversation_n be_v evil_a and_o offensive_a if_o so_o be_v their_o doctrine_n be_v sound_a and_o good_a the_o disciple_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n must_v not_o do_v according_a to_o the_o way_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisy_n but_o yet_o they_o must_v hearâ—_n they_o when_o they_o sit_v in_o moses_n chair_n that_o be_v when_o they_o teach_v moses_n doctrine_n and_o paul_n be_v glad_a when_o christ_n be_v 18._o true_o preach_v though_o it_o be_v not_o in_o sincerity_n of_o affection_n but_o of_o envy_n when_o the_o disciple_n see_v a_o man_n that_o be_v not_o call_v by_o any_o special_a calling_n 49._o to_o follow_v christ_n as_o themselves_o be_v and_o cast_v out_o devil_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n they_o think_v it_o intolerable_a and_o therefore_o forbid_v he_o but_o christ_n say_v forbid_v he_o not_o for_o he_o that_o be_v not_o against_o we_o be_v with_o we_o and_o the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v of_o they_o that_o preach_v wholesome_a doctrine_n though_o their_o life_n be_v still_o offensive_a for_o in_o doctrine_n they_o be_v with_o christ_n and_o so_o farforth_a must_v be_v approve_v again_o consider_v that_o the_o virtue_n and_o efficacy_n of_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n administer_v by_o man_n be_v not_o from_o the_o minister_n but_o from_o god_n a_o letter_n be_v not_o the_o worse_a because_o it_o be_v bring_v by_o a_o unhonest_a or_o unfaithful_a carrier_n neither_o do_v the_o evil_a conscience_n of_o the_o minister_n defile_v the_o good_a conscience_n of_o the_o honest_a hearer_n and_o worthy_a receiver_n this_o must_v be_v remember_v because_o many_o take_v offence_n at_o the_o life_n of_o the_o minister_n so_o as_o they_o will_v not_o hear_v his_o doctrine_n if_o his_o conversation_n be_v scandalous_a v._o in_o that_o a_o prophet_n be_v to_o be_v know_v by_o his_o fruit_n and_o the_o main_a divinity_n fruit_n of_o a_o true_a prophet_n stand_v in_o the_o good_a handle_n of_o god_n word_n for_o the_o edification_n and_o salvation_n of_o his_o hearer_n hence_o the_o child_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o those_o that_o be_v set_v a_o part_n for_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n be_v teach_v that_o they_o must_v make_v this_o the_o main_a and_o principal_a end_n of_o all_o their_o study_n to_o be_v able_a to_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o a_o true_a prophet_n that_o be_v to_o interpret_v â—â—ight_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o thence_o to_o gather_v out_o wholesome_a doctrine_n and_o use_n for_o the_o edification_n of_o god_n people_n and_o for_o the_o enforce_a of_o this_o duty_n let_v we_o consider_v first_o that_o it_o be_v god_n commandment_n so_o to_o do_v 1._o cor._n 14._o 1._o seek_v for_o spiritual_a gift_n but_o special_o to_o prophesy_v again_o the_o great_a skill_n and_o beat_v of_o the_o flood_n and_o wind_n ii_o the_o quality_n of_o this_o ruin_n it_o be_v great_a and_o fearful_a the_o house_n fall_v and_o the_o fall_n thereof_o be_v great_a for_o the_o first_o flood_n and_o wind_n and_o rain_n do_v here_o betoken_v trial_n try_v and_o temptation_n which_o be_v here_o say_v to_o befall_v the_o professor_n of_o the_o name_n of_o christ._n whence_o we_o learn_v that_o every_o one_o that_o do_v hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o profess_v true_a religion_n must_v look_v for_o a_o day_n of_o temptation_n and_o trial_n it_o be_v god_n will_n profession_n and_o not_o suffer_v ourselves_o to_o be_v deprive_v of_o true_a religion_n for_o time_n will_v come_v when_o we_o must_v be_v try_v and_o therefore_o in_o this_o happy_a time_n of_o peace_n and_o truth_n which_o be_v to_o we_o the_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n we_o must_v labour_v serious_o to_o have_v our_o heart_n endue_v with_o some_o good_a measure_n of_o last_a grace_n as_o of_o faith_n hope_n and_o love_n which_o as_o good_a gold_n may_v abide_v the_o trial_n of_o affliction_n otherwise_o we_o shall_v not_o stand_v for_o all_o paint_a show_n of_o grace_n in_o time_n of_o trial_n will_v vanish_v away_o like_a dross_n and_o stubble_n before_o the_o fire_n the_o second_o point_n in_o this_o effect_n be_v the_o quality_n of_o this_o ruin_n and_o fall_v it_o be_v great_a and_o fearful_a it_o fall_v and_o the_o fall_n thereof_o be_v great_a the_o thing_n resemble_v hereby_o be_v most_o fearful_a to_o wit_n that_o such_o professor_n of_o religion_n as_o in_o the_o day_n of_o peace_n do_v not_o join_v practice_n with_o their_o profession_n shall_v fall_v away_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trial_n and_o come_v to_o most_o fearful_a perdition_n this_o be_v the_o principal_a point_n that_o christ_n here_o aim_v at_o whereby_o he_o intend_v to_o terrify_v man_n from_o dissemble_a profession_n and_o the_o consideration_n of_o it_o must_v work_v effectual_o in_o our_o heart_n for_o we_o by_o god_n mercy_n and_o blessing_n have_v have_v the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o many_o year_n together_o in_o such_o measure_n as_o never_o be_v in_o this_o land_n before_o and_o yet_o though_o all_o of_o we_o be_v hearer_n where_o be_v our_o obedience_n alas_o some_o among_o we_o grow_v to_o be_v flat_a and_o peremptory_a atheist_n deny_v god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n other_o and_o the_o most_o under_o the_o name_n of_o religion_n root_n their_o heart_n in_o the_o world_n some_o in_o profit_n and_o some_o in_o pleasure_n and_o none_o of_o these_o almost_o regard_v religion_n other_o profess_v religion_n and_o yet_o live_v in_o gross_a sin_n as_o swear_v drunkenness_n uncleanness_n etc._n etc._n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o gross_a impiety_n in_o their_o life_n so_o that_o if_o we_o look_v into_o the_o general_a state_n of_o our_o people_n we_o shall_v see_v that_o religion_n be_v profess_v but_o not_o obey_v nay_o obedience_n be_v count_v preciseness_n and_o so_o reproach_v but_o we_o must_v know_v that_o in_o the_o end_n this_o profane_v of_o religion_n will_v soon_o turn_v all_o god_n blessing_n temporal_a and_o spiritual_a into_o fearful_a curse_n both_o of_o body_n and_o soul_n if_o ever_o any_o thing_n bring_v ruin_n upon_o we_o it_o will_v be_v the_o contempt_n of_o god_n word_n profess_v and_o therefore_o let_v we_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n endeavour_v ourselves_o not_o only_o to_o know_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o to_o turn_v unto_o god_n from_o all_o sin_n and_o especial_o in_o regard_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o disobedience_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n last_o christ_n note_v the_o quality_n of_o this_o fall_n to_o be_v exceed_o great_a to_o hypocrisy_n show_v unto_o we_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o hypocrisy_n for_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o these_o three_o sort_n of_o man_n a_o sinner_n that_o make_v no_o profession_n of_o religion_n a_o hypocrite_n that_o make_v a_o great_a show_n of_o piety_n in_o profession_n and_o a_o true_a believer_n who_o life_n and_o conversation_n be_v answerable_a to_o his_o profession_n for_o a_o true_a professor_n may_v fall_v into_o sin_n very_o fearful_o as_o peter_n and_o david_n do_v and_o yet_o recover_v again_o also_o he_o that_o be_v a_o most_o notorious_a sinner_n as_o manasses_n be_v may_v be_v convert_v and_o repent_v but_o when_o a_o professor_n that_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n in_o religion_n be_v try_v he_o fall_v quite_o from_o christ_n and_o make_v apostasy_n from_o his_o profession_n and_o in_o this_o regard_n his_o fall_n be_v call_v great_a and_o therefore_o see_v professor_n may_v thus_o fearful_o fall_v away_o let_v we_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n labour_n in_o some_o truth_n of_o heart_n
