will_v but_o cast_v these_o beam_n out_o of_o our_o eye_n we_o shall_v both_o see_v more_o clear_o and_o certain_o live_v more_o peaceable_o but_o whilst_o we_o pursue_v base_a and_o sordid_a end_n under_o the_o pretence_n of_o maintain_v truth_n we_o shall_v always_o be_v in_o error_n and_o always_o in_o contention_n let_v we_o therefore_o quit_v ourselves_o of_o all_o our_o prepossession_n this_o satisfaction_n that_o i_o have_v sincere_o endeavour_v in_o all_o my_o preach_v to_o instruct_v you_o in_o the_o true_a doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o teach_v you_o the_o right_a way_n that_o lead_v to_o salvation_n and_o i_o be_o so_o certain_a that_o i_o have_v not_o be_v mistake_v myself_o nor_o mislead_v you_o in_o that_o matter_n that_o i_o dare_v with_o confidence_n address_v myself_o to_o you_o in_o some_o of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n which_o do_v immediate_o follow_v after_o my_o text_n viz._n those_o thing_n which_o you_o have_v learned_a and_o receive_v and_o hear_v from_o i_o do_v and_o the_o god_n of_o peace_n shall_v be_v with_o you_o i_o shall_v ever_o bless_v god_n for_o that_o providence_n of_o he_o which_o place_v i_o among_o you_o and_o as_o i_o shall_v always_o and_o do_v earnest_o desire_v all_o your_o prayer_n for_o i_o so_o i_o shall_v always_o hearty_o pray_v for_o you_o that_o god_n will_v guide_v and_o prosper_v you_o their_o opposition_n of_o he_o and_o his_o gospel_n even_o to_o the_o final_a rejection_n of_o their_o nation_n to_o these_o people_n do_v st._n paul_n in_o this_o chapter_n express_v a_o great_a compassion_n hearty_o wish_v and_o pray_v for_o their_o conversion_n brethren_n say_v he_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n my_o hearty_a desire_n and_o prayer_n to_o god_n for_o israel_n be_v that_o they_o may_v be_v save_v that_o be_v that_o they_o may_v come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n obtain_v everlasting_a salvation_n and_o one_o reason_n why_o he_o be_v thus_o concern_v for_o they_o he_o give_v in_o the_o word_n follow_v which_o be_v the_o word_n i_o have_v read_v unto_o you_o for_o i_o bear_v they_o record_v say_v he_o that_o they_o have_v a_o zeal_n of_o god_n but_o not_o according_a to_o knowledge_n it_o be_v a_o great_a motive_n to_o he_o to_o be_v concern_v for_o their_o happiness_n that_o they_o be_v zealous_a for_o religion_n though_o he_o know_v at_o the_o same_o time_n that_o the_o religion_n they_o be_v then_o so_o zealous_a of_o be_v not_o the_o right_a religion_n nor_o do_v the_o zeal_n they_o show_v for_o it_o proceed_v from_o right_a principle_n according_a to_o the_o account_n i_o have_v now_o give_v of_o this_o passage_n three_o thing_n we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o from_o it_o viz._n i._o the_o apostle_n approve_v and_o tacit_o commend_v that_o zeal_n which_o his_o countryman_n express_v for_o religion_n ii_o his_o meek_a and_o charitable_a behaviour_n towards_o they_o even_o when_o their_o zeal_n for_o religion_n be_v very_o faulty_a and_o unblamable_a iii_o his_o discovery_n of_o the_o faultiness_n of_o their_o zeal_n which_o lie_v in_o this_o that_o it_o be_v not_o according_a to_o knowledge_n these_o three_o thing_n i_o shall_v take_v for_o the_o head_n of_o my_o follow_a discourse_n upon_o this_o text_n and_o shall_v afterward_o make_v such_o application_n of_o it_o as_o the_o business_n of_o this_o day_n call_v for_o i._n first_o i_o desire_v it_o may_v be_v observe_v that_o zeal_n of_o god_n in_o general_n that_o be_v a_o hearty_a and_o passionate_a concernment_n for_o religion_n the_o apostle_n here_o find_v no_o fault_n with_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o approve_v it_o as_o a_o commendable_a thing_n for_o you_o see_v he_o represent_v it_o as_o a_o piece_n of_o virtue_n in_o his_o countryman_n and_o speak_v it_o to_o their_o commendation_n that_o they_o have_v a_o zeal_n of_o god_n i_o bear_v they_o record_v say_v he_o that_o they_o have_v a_o zeal_n of_o god_n as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v that_o he_o own_v they_o have_v that_o good_a quality_n and_o they_o be_v to_o be_v commend_v for_o it_o and_o for_o that_o reason_n he_o both_o wish_v they_o well_o and_o affectionate_o pray_v for_o they_o that_o which_o
to_o consume_v the_o adversary_n iii_o the_o three_o general_n point_v i_o be_o to_o insist_v on_o from_o the_o text_n be_v the_o end_n of_o our_o saviour_n appearance_n and_o that_o be_v here_o say_v to_o be_v the_o put_v away_o of_o sin_n once_o in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n have_v he_o appear_v to_o put_v away_o sin_n this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o scripture_n every_o where_o assign_v from_o our_o sin_n or_o to_o have_v our_o sin_n put_v away_o since_o the_o salvation_n we_o have_v by_o christ_n do_v consist_v in_o this_o it_o be_v fit_a we_o shall_v a_o little_a more_o particular_o insist_v on_o it_o in_o answer_n therefore_o to_o this_o question_n we_o say_v that_o two_o thing_n be_v employ_v in_o christ_n be_v put_v away_o sin_n first_o his_o save_n or_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o gild_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o punishment_n due_a to_o they_o second_o his_o save_n or_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o power_n and_o dominion_n of_o they_o in_o these_o two_o thing_n consist_v the_o salvation_n obtain_v for_o we_o by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o if_o either_o of_o they_o be_v want_v or_o be_v not_o effect_v he_o will_v not_o be_v a_o complete_a saviour_n first_o christ_n appear_v to_o put_v away_o sin_n by_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o gild_n and_o punishment_n of_o it_o that_o be_v to_o say_v by_o procure_v for_o we_o the_o pardon_n and_o remission_n of_o it_o this_o be_v the_o salvation_n which_o zachary_n in_o his_o hymn_n foretell_v john_n baptist_n shall_v publish_v to_o the_o world_n luke_n 1_o to_o give_v knowledge_n of_o salvation_n to_o his_o people_n for_o the_o remission_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v that_o redemption_n of_o christ_n which_o st._n paul_n speak_v of_o 1_o coloss_n 14._o in_o who_o we_o have_v redemption_n through_o his_o blood_n even_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o last_o st._n paul_n sermon_n to_o the_o gentile_n be_v be_v it_o know_v unto_o you_o man_n and_o brethren_n that_o through_o this_o man_n jesus_n christ_n be_v preach_v unto_o you_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o by_o he_o all_o that_o believe_v be_v justify_v from_o all_o thing_n from_o which_o you_o can_v not_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n acts._n 13._o and_o therefore_o much_o less_o certain_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n the_o effect_n of_o these_o text_n be_v that_o all_o mankind_n be_v sinner_n be_v conclude_v under_o sin_n be_v become_v guilty_a before_o god_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v the_o most_o innocent_a person_n be_v not_o except_v all_o without_o exception_n have_v by_o their_o sin_n fall_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n mean_v now_o for_o the_o free_n themselves_o from_o the_o gild_n of_o these_o sin_n they_o have_v none_o nor_o be_v it_o possible_a they_o shall_v have_v for_o that_o whole_o depend_v upon_o the_o pleasure_n of_o he_o to_o who_o they_o have_v render_v themselves_o obnoxious_a and_o that_o be_v god_n the_o governor_n of_o the_o world_n here_o therefore_o appear_v the_o infinite_a mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o kindness_n of_o our_o saviour_n the_o eternal_a word_n interpose_v and_o offer_v himself_o to_o become_v man_n and_o in_o that_o person_n to_o make_v satisfaction_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o god_n accept_v the_o term_n and_o hereupon_o a_o covenant_n be_v make_v between_o god_n and_o mankind_n wherein_o god_n for_o his_o part_n upon_o account_n of_o this_o mediation_n of_o christ_n promise_v forgiveness_n of_o all_o sin_n to_o all_o true_a penitent_n all_o the_o world_n over_o o_o joyful_a tiding_n these_o what_o ease_n be_v here_o to_o wound_a conscience_n what_o comfort_n to_o despair_a sinner_n what_o encouragement_n to_o all_o man_n every_o where_o to_o repent_v if_o we_o consider_v mankind_n in_o their_o pure_a natural_n and_o as_o without_o christ_n jesus_n this_o plain_o be_v their_o case_n they_o do_v believe_v a_o supreme_a god_n and_o their_o reason_n it_o be_v likely_a will_v tell_v they_o that_o god_n be_v good_a and_o merciful_a but_o yet_o this_o reason_n can_v discover_v no_o more_o than_o god_n general_a goodness_n to_o they_o that_o all_o along_o endeavour_v to_o please_v and_o approve_v themselves_o too_o he_o but_o as_o for_o his_o willingness_n to_o pardon_v and_o forgive_v sinner_n especial_o those_o that_o have_v offend_v he_o by_o very_o grievous_a crime_n or_o live_v in_o a_o long_a habitual_a course_n of_o wickedness_n this_o they_o can_v not_o conclude_v from_o their_o reason_n nay_o if_o they_o do_v reason_n as_o they_o just_o may_v they_o may_v rather_o be_v incline_v to_o believe_v that_o he_o will_v not_o pardon_v such_o criminal_n for_o as_o their_o reason_n tell_v they_o that_o god_n be_v good_a so_o the_o same_o reason_n tell_v they_o that_o he_o be_v just_a and_o have_v a_o infinite_a regard_n to_o the_o honour_n and_o reputation_n of_o his_o law_n which_o law_n their_o own_o conscience_n tell_v they_o they_o have_v heinous_o transgress_v nor_o have_v they_o any_o thing_n wherewith_o to_o compensate_a or_o make_v satisfaction_n for_o the_o transgression_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o what_o can_v they_o expect_v from_o so_o just_a a_o god_n but_o to_o undergo_v the_o punishment_n they_o have_v deserve_v this_o be_v a_o very_a uncomfortable_a reason_v and_o yet_o such_o a_o one_o it_o be_v as_o there_o be_v no_o answer_n to_o be_v give_v to_o in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n and_o therefore_o in_o what_o a_o melancholy_a condition_n be_v mankind_n all_o the_o while_n what_o encouragement_n have_v they_o serious_o to_o set_v upon_o the_o amendment_n of_o their_o wicked_a life_n or_o if_o they_o do_v what_o fruit_n what_o comfort_n can_v they_o promise_v to_o themselves_o by_o such_o a_o amendment_n he_o there_o be_v no_o sinner_n except_v even_o the_o old_a the_o great_a the_o most_o enormous_a of_o sinner_n if_o they_o will_v come_v in_o and_o submit_v to_o the_o yoke_n of_o jesus_n christ_n
