be_v in_o the_o room_n of_o some_o faithful_a minister_n they_o have_v feel_v but_o the_o half_a of_o their_o burden_n they_o will_v sing_v another_o song_n let_v none_o therefore_o dream_v of_o a_o easy_a and_o pleasant_a life_n in_o this_o vocation_n so_o be_v it_o he_o mean_v to_o be_v conscionable_a in_o discharge_n of_o his_o duty_n no_o let_v he_o beforehand_o cast_v the_o worse_o and_o examine_v himself_o whether_o he_o be_v able_a to_o go_v through_o the_o brunt_n and_o agony_n of_o this_o spiritual_a warfare_n let_v he_o say_v to_o himself_o as_o christ_n say_v to_o the_o son_n of_o zebedeus_n be_o i_o able_a to_o be_v baptize_v with_o that_o baptism_n a_o minister_n must_v be_v baptize_v with_o to_o drink_v of_o that_o cup_n he_o must_v drink_v of_o assure_v thyself_o that_o it_o be_v far_o hard_a with_o the_o minister_n the_o chief_a soldier_n then_o with_o common_a christian_n the_o inferior_a though_o in_o our_o war_n the_o common_a soldier_n common_o go_v by_o the_o worse_o but_o the_o case_n be_v otherwise_o here_o the_o minister_n stand_v in_o the_o forefront_n of_o the_o battle_n be_v in_o great_a danger_n withal_o satan_n bend_v his_o force_n most_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o favour_n whereby_o he_o be_v willing_a as_o it_o be_v and_o desirous_a to_o favour_v we_o and_o not_o otherwise_o for_o how_o then_o can_v we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n by_o christ_n if_o before_o we_o be_v actual_o in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o of_o this_o grace_n our_o election_n be_v make_v a_o fruit_n ephes_n 1._o 5_o 6._o who_o have_v predestinate_v we_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o grace_n whereby_o he_o have_v free_o make_v we_o accept_v in_o his_o belove_a that_o be_v whereby_o he_o have_v predestinate_v us._n second_o there_o be_v another_o degree_n of_o god_n favour_n when_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o favour_v we_o and_o a_o free_a disposition_n to_o do_v we_o good_a and_o because_o it_o will_v not_o stand_v with_o his_o justice_n to_o favour_v the_o vile_a and_o abominable_a have_v further_o of_o his_o own_o good_a pleasure_n in_o christ_n fit_v we_o for_o his_o favour_n he_o do_v now_o take_v a_o singular_a pleasure_n and_o delight_n in_o us._n so_o then_o there_o be_v a_o favour_n whereby_o god_n make_v we_o as_o i_o may_v say_v favourable_a such_o as_o may_v be_v favour_v and_o it_o be_v the_o description_n of_o the_o apostle_n himself_o ephes_n 1._o 6._o by_o the_o which_o grace_n he_o have_v make_v we_o accept_v and_o there_o be_v a_o further_a favour_n whereby_o have_v make_v we_o accept_v that_o be_v such_o as_o may_v be_v accept_v he_o do_v indeed_o accept_v we_o and_o be_v exceed_o well_o please_v with_o us._n this_o may_v be_v call_v the_o favour_n of_o complacency_n
and_o this_o be_v that_o favour_n which_o so_o often_o in_o the_o psalm_n be_v call_v the_o light_n of_o god_n countenance_n the_o consideration_n of_o these_o distinct_a not_o kind_n but_o degree_n of_o god_n favour_n be_v very_o necessary_a for_o hereby_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v both_o the_o cause_n and_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n a_o cause_n of_o this_o latter_a favour_n a_o effect_n of_o the_o former_a hereby_o also_o we_o see_v how_o both_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n be_v merit_v by_o christ_n for_o we_o and_o yet_o free_a because_o it_o be_v of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n to_o vouchsafe_v unto_o we_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o procure_n of_o his_o favour_n now_o in_o this_o place_n both_o these_o favour_n be_v mean_v so_o that_o the_o full_a meaning_n of_o the_o apostle_n say_v grace_n be_v unto_o you_o from_o god_n be_v this_o the_o lord_n grant_v unto_o you_o his_o favour_n both_o that_o favour_n whereby_o you_o may_v be_v make_v capable_a of_o his_o favour_n in_o be_v justify_v through_o christ_n as_o also_o that_o sweet_a acceptation_n of_o you_o be_v thus_o fit_v for_o his_o favour_n what_o need_v the_o apostle_n wish_v unto_o they_o the_o first_o object_n favour_n since_o that_o be_v grant_v unto_o they_o from_o everlasting_a as_o also_o some_o fruit_n thereof_o namely_o their_o election_n in_o christ_n and_o in_o time_n the_o other_o fruit_n thereof_o their_o engraft_v into_o christ_n justification_n and_o adoption_n though_o god_n have_v vouchsafe_v they_o this_o favour_n ans_fw-fr before_o all_o world_n and_o they_o by_o it_o be_v make_v fit_a to_o be_v entertain_v into_o his_o special_a favour_n yet_o paul_n may_v pray_v that_o god_n will_v continue_v it_o still_o towards_o they_o for_o as_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o those_o good_a thing_n which_o make_v we_o acceptable_a to_o god_n so_o likewise_o be_v it_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o they_o namely_o of_o christ_n and_o all_o his_o blessing_n and_o so_o consequent_o of_o our_o acceptation_n for_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o forfeit_v christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n daily_o and_o so_o to_o lose_v all_o that_o grace_n which_o by_o his_o mean_n we_o have_v with_o god_n therefore_o it_o be_v needful_a that_o still_o we_o shall_v require_v that_o first_o degree_n of_o god_n favour_n to_o hold_v out_o and_o be_v continue_v towards_o we_o for_o the_o continuation_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n whatsoever_o which_o depend_v upon_o it_o and_o in_o truth_n this_o second_o favour_n be_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o former_a he_o that_o desire_v the_o latter_a must_v needs_o withal_o desire_v the_o former_a but_o as_o i_o take_v it_o both_o here_o and_o elsewhere_o the_o god_n will_v lift_v up_o the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n upon_o they_o and_o second_o for_o that_o purpose_n because_o the_o pure_a eye_n of_o god_n can_v behold_v iniquity_n such_o as_o they_o be_v in_o themselves_o that_o he_o will_v of_o his_o free_a favour_n work_v and_o continue_v that_o in_o they_o which_o may_v draw_v his_o sweet_a eye_n towards_o they_o and_o cause_v he_o to_o cast_v a_o gracious_a and_o amiable_a aspect_n upon_o they_o first_o from_o hence_o let_v we_o observe_v the_o chief_a and_o doct._n 1_v principall_a cause_n of_o god_n favour_n to_o we_o namely_o favour_n the_o cause_n of_o god_n favour_n his_o own_o free_a will_n and_o gracious_a disposition_n to_o favour_n us._n for_o though_o indeed_o christ_n obedience_n do_v merit_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n for_o show_v rom._n 8._o who_o have_v give_v we_o his_o own_o son_n the_o word_n signify_v to_o give_v gratis_o and_o free_o so_o then_o god_n grace_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o christ_n his_o be_v give_v it_o be_v also_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o acceptance_n which_o we_o find_v with_o he_o through_o christ_n for_o that_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o cause_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o thing_n cause_v and_o therefore_o grace_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v to_o say_v god_n own_o gracious_a inclination_n of_o his_o will_n towards_o we_o to_o do_v good_a to_o we_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o that_o so_o great_a grace_n which_o we_o find_v in_o his_o eye_n and_o herein_o differ_v god_n favour_n from_o man_n man_n favour_n though_o it_o make_v he_o do_v good_a to_o the_o party_n favour_v yet_o first_o of_o all_o it_o presuppose_v some_o good_a in_o the_o man_n favour_v a_o attractive_a and_o drawer_n of_o this_o his_o favour_n now_o god_n favour_n as_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n we_o daily_o receive_v so_o be_v it_o also_o the_o cause_n of_o itself_o as_o we_o show_v and_o therefore_o it_o do_v not_o presuppose_v any_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o before_o but_o bring_v with_o it_o that_o good_a thing_n namely_o christ_n jesus_n which_o must_v uphold_v and_o maintain_v this_o his_o favour_n the_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v to_o humble_v we_o in_o ourselves_o as_o have_v not_o the_o least_o spark_n of_o goodness_n in_o ourselves_o and_o to_o make_v we_o ascribe_v all_o praise_n and_o glory_n in_o every_o thing_n to_o god_n who_o grace_n be_v the_o fountain_n and_o foundation_n of_o all_o good_a thing_n whatsoever_o let_v no_o man_n then_o talk_v of_o christ_n merit_n and_o therefore_o in_o this_o regard_n claim_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o life_n eternal_a as_o his_o due_n from_o whence_o be_v it_o that_o we_o have_v christ_n merit_n impute_v unto_o we_o and_o the_o imputation_n of_o they_o daily_o continue_v but_o of_o the_o free_a mercy_n of_o god_n and_o so_o for_o all_o this_o the_o apostle_n rom._n 3._o say_v we_o be_v justify_v free_o by_o his_o grace_n though_o we_o be_v clothe_v with_o bracelet_n jewel_n and_o ornament_n where_o withal_o god_n holy_a eye_n be_v affect_v ezech._n 16._o yet_o have_v we_o no_o cause_n to_o be_v proud_a for_o it_o be_v god_n that_o put_v upon_o we_o these_o robe_n when_o we_o be_v in_o our_o rag_n and_o filthy_a nastiness_n and_o so_o he_o do_v but_o love_v his_o own_o beauty_n in_o us._n second_o in_o the_o example_n of_o paul_n in_o all_o his_o salutation_n doct._n 2_o wish_v first_o of_o all_o grace_n that_o be_v the_o favour_n thing_n the_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o be_v desire_v above_o all_o thing_n of_o god_n we_o learn_v what_o it_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v chief_o and_o principal_o desire_v either_o for_o ourselves_o or_o other_o our_o child_n wife_n kindred_n father_n and_o mother_n acquaintance_n etc._n etc._n viz._n this_o grace_n of_o s._n paul_n psal_n 4._o 6._o many_o say_v who_o will_v show_v we_o any_o good_a lord_n lift_v thou_o up_o the_o light_n of_o thy_o countenance_n and_o abraham_n wish_n for_o ishmael_n be_v oh_o that_o ishmael_n may_v live_v in_o thy_o sight_n abraham_n have_v good_n enough_o to_o leave_v ishmael_n but_o that_o content_a he_o not_o he_o desire_v better_a thing_n for_o he_o that_o he_o may_v be_v joint-heire_n of_o the_o gracious_a promise_n together_o with_o isaac_n the_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v thus_o desire_v this_o blessing_n be_v special_o in_o these_o two_o regard_n first_o god_n favour_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n whatsoever_o it_o be_v the_o main_a and_o mother-blessing_n reason_n 2._o reason_n the_o very_a seed_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n those_o who_o be_v in_o favour_n with_o prince_n presume_v so_o far_o and_o make_v themselves_o sure_a of_o any_o thing_n as_o haman_n be_v ask_v by_o the_o king_n what_o shall_v be_v do_v to_o the_o 4_o and_o love_n of_o philemon_z plain_o show_v that_o there_o be_v some_o that_o relate_v &_o report_v they_o to_o he_o by_o who_o example_n we_o must_v learn_v to_o have_v a_o special_a respect_n of_o the_o good_a name_n of_o our_o brother_n be_v always_o ready_a as_o occasion_n shall_v serve_v to_o speak_v of_o those_o good_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o other_o that_o so_o their_o name_n as_o it_o be_v be_v scent_v &_o perfume_v with_o this_o ointment_n may_v have_v a_o most_o sweet_a &_o fragrant_a odor_n in_o all_o place_n but_o where_o be_v the_o man_n that_o will_v thus_o labour_v to_o uphold_v the_o credit_n of_o his_o brother_n that_o will_v acknowledge_v god_n grace_n in_o he_o in_o all_o place_n and_o at_o all_o time_n and_o will_v not_o rather_o with_o some_o one_o infirmity_n overwhelm_v whatsoever_o be_v prayse-worthie_a in_o he_o five_o observe_v god_n providence_n recompense_v doct._n 5_o faith_n with_o fame_n and_o good_a name_n when_o faith_n shall_v religion_n a_o good_a report_n the_o recompense_n of_o religion_n open_v our_o heart_n and_o mouth_n to_o extol_v god_n name_n god_n will_v open_v our_o brethren_n yea_o sometime_o our_o enemy_n mouth_n to_o extol_v we_o heb._n 11._o 3._o by_o this_o namely_o faith_n our_o elder_n obtain_v a_o good_a report_n this_o be_v the_o mean_n whereby_o they_o become_v so_o famous_a what_o marvel_v then_o if_o thou_o have_v a_o ill_a name_n when_o thou_o have_v a_o ill_a conscience_n naughty_a faith_n and_o fame_n crack_a credit_n and_o conscience_n common_o go_v together_o the_o use_n of_o ointment_n among_o the_o ancient_n be_v especial_o in_o their_o feast_n then_o may_v we_o look_v for_o god_n to_o come_v &_o drench_v we_o with_o the_o precious_a ointment_n of_o a_o good_a name_n when_o we_o be_v keep_v the_o feast_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n if_o we_o will_v serve_v god_n with_o a_o good_a conscience_n by_o faith_n purge_v from_o dead_a work_n than_o shall_v we_o find_v that_o god_n who_o see_v our_o faith_n and_o good_a conscience_n in_o secret_a will_v reward_v we_o with_o credit_n and_o estimation_n open_o thus_o much_o general_o concern_v the_o cause_n and_o matter_n of_o paul_n pray_v unto_o and_o praise_v god_n viz._n the_o hear_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o philemon_z now_o more_o particular_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o these_o grace_n be_v there_o be_v two_o set_v down_o here_o by_o name_n first_o the_o love_n second_o the_o faith_n of_o philemon_z both_o these_o grace_n be_v set_v forth_o by_o their_o object_n whereabout_o they_o be_v conversant_a which_o thou_o have_v towards_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o all_o saint_n both_o these_o object_n belong_v in_o common_a to_o love_n the_o former_a only_o to_o faith_n by_o faith_n only_o we_o apprehend_v christ_n and_o unite_v ourselves_o to_o he_o but_o by_o love_n we_o apprehend_v and_o unite_v ourselves_o both_o to_o christ_n and_o our_o fellow-member_n thus_o then_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o they_o be_v to_o be_v construe_v hear_v of_o thy_o faith_n and_o love_n thy_o faith_n which_o thou_o have_v in_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o thy_o love_n which_o thou_o have_v both_o to_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o all_o saint_n the_o rhemist_n therefore_o err_v by_o this_o place_n confirm_v that_o confidence_n which_o they_o teach_v we_o to_o repose_v in_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o saint_n whereas_o it_o be_v manifest_a by_o the_o seven_o verse_n that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v not_o of_o the_o dead_a but_o of_o live_a saint_n here_o then_o two_o point_n special_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v first_o these_o two_o virtue_n love_n and_o faith_n second_o their_o object_n towards_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o all_o saint_n first_o for_o the_o virtue_n the_o first_o place_n be_v here_o give_v to_o love_n though_o both_o in_o nature_n and_o excellency_n it_o come_v behind_o faith_n as_o the_o effect_v the_o cause_n the_o daughter_n the_o mother_n gal._n 5._o 1._o tim._n 1._o 6._o therefore_o elsewhere_o faith_n be_v set_v before_o as_o coloss_n 1._o 6._o 1._o thessaly_n 1._o 3._o but_o nothing_o be_v more_o usual_a in_o the_o scripture_n then_o to_o give_v the_o former_a place_n unto_o the_o effect_n as_o be_v more_o obvious_a to_o our_o sense_n then_o the_o cause_n by_o faith_n understand_v justify_v faith_n which_o only_o be_v able_a to_o bring_v forth_o true_a love_n either_o to_o god_n or_o man_n and_o by_o love_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v not_o only_o love_v to_o god_n but_o also_o to_o man_n here_o observe_v first_o the_o distinction_n of_o these_o grace_n of_o faith_n and_o doct._n 1_o love._n they_o be_v name_v distinct_o as_o two_o virtue_n 1._o cor._n 13._o in_o the_o end_n there_o remain_v these_o three_o faith_n hope_n and_o charity_n this_o observation_n will_v not_o seem_v idle_a if_o we_o consider_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o papist_n concern_v faith_n viz._n that_o there_o be_v a_o two_o fold_v faith_n one_o inform_v and_o a_o second_o form_v and_o that_o by_o charity_n they_o make_v charity_n the_o form_n the_o life_n and_o soul_n of_o faith_n which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o then_o faith_n and_o love_n be_v not_o to_o be_v distinguish_v but_o confound_v neither_o can_v the_o apostle_n say_v these_o three_o but_z these_z two_o remain_z neither_o can_v charity_n be_v prefer_v before_o faith_n in_o respect_n of_o long_a durance_n for_o the_o form_n of_o a_o thing_n be_v the_o thing_n itself_o and_o therefore_o as_o long_o as_o the_o form_n last_v so_o long_o the_o thing_n itself_o continue_v second_o the_o conjunction_n of_o these_o two_o grace_n doct._n 2_o for_o howsoever_o they_o be_v to_o be_v distinguish_v yet_o not_o divide_v faith_n and_o love_n be_v distinguish_v not_o divide_v to_o be_v officer_n under_o he_o and_o among_o the_o rest_n love_n his_o almoner_n to_o distribute_v and_o disperse_v those_o treasure_n which_o itself_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o lord_n and_o first_o of_o all_o our_o love_n towards_o god_n proceed_v faith_n our_o love_n to_o god_n proceed_v from_o faith_n from_o faith_n which_o apprehend_v god_n love_n to_o we_o inflame_v our_o affection_n again_o with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n the_o barn_n of_o god_n love_n lightning_n upon_o our_o heart_n reflect_v back_o upon_o god_n himself_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o our_o faith_n the_o love_n of_o christ_n say_v the_o apostle_n namely_o be_v apprehend_v by_o our_o faith_n constrain_v us._n a_o example_n whereof_o we_o have_v in_o mary_n magdalen_n who_o faith_n believe_v that_o much_o be_v forgive_v if_o thou_o have_v once_o feel_v the_o love_n of_o god_n shed_v abroad_o into_o thy_o heart_n and_o do_v believe_v that_o god_n have_v do_v so_o much_o for_o thou_o as_o thou_o say_v oh_o then_o how_o zealous_o will_v thou_o love_v the_o lord_n declare_v the_o

when_o by_o it_o thou_o be_v make_v a_o disciple_n of_o christ_n for_o this_o be_v all_o this_o usher_n teach_v thou_o to_o enter_v into_o the_o school_n of_o the_o arch-teacher_n jesus_n christ_n then_o therefore_o have_v thou_o learn_v thy_o
