be_v that_o which_o he_o know_v and_o that_o he_o be_v ignoraht_v of_o the_o great_a and_o now_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o it_o will_v be_v eafie_a for_o he_o to_o esteem_v himself_o below_o all_o and_o for_o the_o great_a sinner_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n it_o be_v most_o certain_a to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v conceal_v nothing_o that_o as_o there_o be_v many_o several_a way_n whereby_o god_n be_v wont_a to_o conduct_v his_o elect_n so_o he_o lead_v many_o by_o this_o way_n whereof_o we_o have_v speak_v namely_o of_o conceal_v his_o gift_n from_o they_o so_o that_o themselves_o may_v not_o see_v they_o nor_o conceive_v that_o they_o have_v they_o but_o he_o manifest_v they_o to_o other_o and_o make_v they_o know_v they_o to_o the_o end_n that_o they_o may_v esteem_v his_o servant_n and_o be_v please_v in_o they_o and_o so_o say_v the_o apostle_n saint_n paul_n we_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o this_o world_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o we_o may_v know_v the_o gift_n and_o grace_n which_o we_o receive_v from_o his_o hand_n and_o the_o most_o holy_a virgin_n mary_n do_v very_o well_o both_o know_v and_o acknowledge_v the_o great_a grace_n and_o gift_n which_o she_o possess_v and_o have_v receive_v from_o almighty_a god_n as_o she_o faith_n in_o her_o canticle_n my_o souldoth_a magnify_v and_o exalt_v our_o lord_n here_o there_o be_v a_o great_a error_n and_o dange_n whereof_o we_o be_v advertise_v by_o the_o saint_n and_o it_o be_v when_o some_o think_v of_o themselves_o that_o they_o have_v more_o grace_n of_o god_n than_o indeed_o they_o have_v in_o which_o error_n be_v that_o miserable_a creature_n to_o who_o god_n command_v this_o to_o be_v say_v in_o the_o apocalypse_n thou_o sa_o be_v it_o that_o we_o know_v where_o we_o be_v we_o grow_v very_o full_a of_o ourselves_o and_o of_o our_o own_o estimation_n and_o for_o this_o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a remedy_n that_o we_o ever_o carry_v our_o eye_n open_a towards_o the_o virtue_n of_o other_o and_o shut_v up_o towards_o our_o own_o and_o so_o to_o live_v ever_o in_o a_o holy_a kind_n of_o fear_n whereby_o we_o ourselves_o will_v be_v more_o safe_a and_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n better_o keep_v but_o yet_o in_o fine_a forasmuch_o as_o our_o lord_n be_v not_o tie_v to_o this_o he_o conduct_n his_o servant_n by_o several_a way_n sometime_o as_o the_o apostle_n saint_n paul_n say_v he_o will_v do_v his_o servant_n the_o particular_a favour_n of_o make_v they_o know_v the_o gift_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v from_o his_o hand_n and_o in_o this_o case_n it_o seem_v that_o the_o thing_n in_o question_n have_v more_o difficulty_n namely_o how_o these_o saint_n and_o spiritual_a man_n who_o know_v and_o see_v in_o themselves_o so_o great_a gift_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v from_o god_n can_v with_o truth_n esteem_v themselves_o below_o all_o and_o affirm_v of_o themselves_o with_o all_o that_o they_o be_v the_o great_a sinner_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n when_o our_o lord_n conduct_n a_o man_n by_o that_o other_o way_n of_o hide_v his_o gift_n that_o so_o he_o see_v no_o virtue_n in_o himself_o but_o all_o his_o fault_n and_o imperfection_n the_o difficulty_n be_v not_o so_o great_a but_o in_o these_o other_o how_o can_v it_o be_v notwithstanding_o all_o this_o it_o may_v be_v very_o well_o be_v you_o humble_a like_a to_o that_o holy_a father_n and_o you_o shall_v know_v how_o his_o companion_n press_v to_o understand_v how_o he_o can_v think_v and_o say_v so_o of_o himself_o with_o truth_n he_o make_v this_o answer_n real_o i_o understand_v it_o as_o i_o speak_v it_o and_o i_o believe_v that_o if_o god_n have_v stew_v those_o mercy_n and_o impart_v those_o grace_n to_o any_o murder_a thief_n or_o to_o the_o great_a sinner_n in_o the_o whole_a world_n which_o he_o have_v vouchsafe_v to_o i_o he_o will_v have_v be_v much_o better_a and_o more_o grateful_a than_o i._o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n i_o conceive_v and_o believe_v that_o if_o our_o lord_n shall_v take_v off_o his_o hand_n from_o i_o and_o not_o hold_v i_o fast_o i_o shall_v commit_v great_a sin_n and_o shall_v prove_v the_o most_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o whole_a world_n and_o for_o this_o reason_n he_o say_v i_o be_o the_o great_a sinner_n and_o the_o most_o ungratef_a of_o all_o man_n and_o this_o be_v a_o very_a good_a answer_n and_o a_o very_a profound_a humility_n and_o it_o carry_v doctrine_n in_o it_o of_o admirable_a instruction_n this_o knowledge_n and_o consideration_n be_v that_o which_o make_v the_o saint_n dive_v down_o so_o low_a under_o the_o carth_n and_o cast_v themselves_o at_o the_o foot_n of_o all_o man_n and_o real_o esteem_v themselves_o for_o the_o great_a sinner_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n for_o they_o have_v that_o root_n of_o humility_n which_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o their_o own_o misery_n and_o frailty_n well_o plant_v and_o deep_o root_v in_o their_o heart_n and_o they_o know_v very_o well_o how_o to_o penetrate_v and_o ponder_v both_o what_o they_o be_v and_o what_o they_o have_v of_o themselves_o and_o this_o make_v it_o easy_a for_o they_o to_o believe_v that_o if_o god_n shall_v not_o hold_v they_o fast_o but_o once_o take_v off_o his_o hand_n from_o their_o head_n they_o will_v have_v prove_v the_o great_a finner_n of_o the_o world_n and_o so_o they_o hold_v themselves_o for_o such_o and_o as_o for_o those_o gift_n and_o grace_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v from_o god_n they_o behold_v they_o not_o as_o any_o thing_n of_o their_o own_o but_o as_o the_o good_n of_o another_o and_o only_o lend_v to_o they_o and_o not_o only_o do_v the_o have_v of_o all_o these_o gift_n not_o distract_v or_o hinder_v they_o from_o remain_v entire_a in_o their_o poorness_n and_o baseness_n or_o from_o esteem_v themselves_o below_o all_o other_o but_o it_o rather_o help_v they_o on_o towards_o that_o end_n because_o they_o think_v they_o profit_v not_o thereby_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o have_v do_v so_o that_o which_o way_n soever_o we_o turn_v our_o eye_n whether_o we_o cast_v they_o inward_a upon_o what_o we_o have_v of_o our_o solve_n or_o wherth_o we_o cast_v of_o god_n we_o shall_v find_v occasion_n enough_o to_o be_v humble_v and_o to_o esteem_v ourselves_o below_o al._n saint_n gregory_n to_o this_o purpose_n ponder_v those_o word_n which_o david_n say_v to_o saul_n after_o he_o may_v have_v kill_v he_o in_o the_o cave_n into_o which_o saul_n have_v enter_v and_o when_o david_n spare_v his_o life_n and_o let_v he_o go_v he_o yet_o go_v after_o he_o say_v who_o do_v thou_o persecute_v o_o king_n of_o israel_n thou_o persecute_v a_o dead_a dog_n and_o a_o singleflea_n as_o i_o be_o the_o saint_n poinder_n it_o thus_o very_a well_o david_n be_v already_o anoint_v for_o king_n and_o have_v understand_v from_o the_o prophet_n samuel_n who_o anoint_v he_o that_o god_n will_v take_v the_o kingdom_n from_o saul_n &_o give_v it_o he_o &_o yet_o neverthe_n less_o he_o humble_v and_o lessen_v himself_o before_o he_o though_o he_o know_v that_o god_n have_v prefer_v he_o and_o that_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n fall_v into_o those_o other_o sin_n humility_n be_v also_o so_o great_a a_o ornament_n to_o chastity_n that_o saint_n bernard_n say_v i_o dare_v adventure_n to_o say_v that_o even_o the_o virginity_n of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n mary_n will_v not_o have_v be_v please_v to_o god_n without_o humility_n final_o for_o the_o virtue_n of_o obedience_n it_o be_v a_o clear_a truth_n that_o both_o he_o can_v be_v true_o obedient_a who_o be_v not_o humble_a and_o that_o he_o who_o be_v humble_a must_v needs_o be_v obedient_a the_o humble_a man_n may_v be_v command_v to_o do_v any_o thing_n but_o so_o may_v not_o he_o who_o be_v not_o humble_a the_o humble_a man_n frame_v no_o contrary_a judgement_n but_o conform_v himself_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o his_o superior_a and_o not_o only_o in_o the_o work_n but_o even_o in_o the_o will_n and_o understanding_n also_o nor_o make_v he_o any_o contradiction_n or_o resistance_n if_o now_o we_o will_v come_v to_o speak_v of_o prayer_n upon_o which_o the_o very_a life_n of_o a_o religious_a and_o spiritual_a man_n rely_v if_o it_o be_v not_o accompany_v with_o humility_n it_o be_v of_o no_o worth_n whereas_o prayer_n with_o humility_n pierce_v heaven_n the_o prayer_n of_o he_o who_o humble_v himself_o do_v penetrate_v heaven_n say_v the_o wise_a man_n and_o he_o will_v not_o give_v over_o till_o he_o obtain_v all_o that_o which_o he_o desire_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n that_o holy_a and_o humble_a judith_n be_v shut_v up_o in_o her_o oratory_n clad_v with_o sackcloth_n and_o cover_v with_o ash_n and_o prostrate_v upon_o the_o reconciliation_n he_o call_v the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o sacrament_n by_o which_o grace_n be_v communicate_v the_o ministry_n of_o reconciliation_n god_n have_v make_v we_o his_o servant_n his_o ambassador_n as_o his_o apostle_n be_v the_o first_o of_o that_o chief_n bishop_n jesus_n christ_n tongue_n &_o instrument_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n god_n exhort_v and_o persuade_v man_n by_o we_o our_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o speak_v to_o soul_n by_o our_o tongue_n by_o these_o tongue_n of_o flesh_n will_v our_o lord_n move_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n for_o this_o have_v we_o therefore_o more_o need_n than_o other_o of_o the_o virtue_n of_o humility_n and_o that_o upon_o two_o reason_n first_o because_o by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o high_a our_o office_n and_o vocation_n be_v so_o much_o more_o hazard_n shall_v we_o run_v and_o so_o much_o the_o great_a will_v be_v the_o combat_n of_o vanity_n and_o pride_n the_o high_a hill_n as_o st_n hierome_n say_v be_v assault_v by_o the_o high_a wind_n we_o be_v employ_v in_o very_o high_a ministery_n and_o for_o this_o be_v we_o respect_v and_o esteem_v over_o the_o world_n we_o be_v hold_v to_o be_v saint_n and_o even_o for_o other_o apostle_n upon_o earth_n and_o that_o all_o our_o conversation_n be_v sanctity_n so_o by_o all_o mean_v it_o ought_v to_o be_v and_o woe_n unto_o we_o if_o it_o be_v not_o and_o that_o our_o study_n be_v to_o make_v they_o also_o saint_n with_o who_o we_o converse_v here_o be_v need_n of_o a_o great_a foundation_n of_o humility_n that_o so_o high_a a_o build_n as_o this_o may_v not_o be_v drive_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n we_o have_v need_n have_v great_a strength_n of_o virtue_n that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o bear_v the_o weight_n of_o honour_n with_o all_o the_o circumstance_n thereof_o a_o hard_a task_n it_o be_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o honour_n and_o that_o yet_o no_o part_n thereof_o shall_v fasten_v itself_o to_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v not_o every_o body_n case_n to_o have_v a_o head_n that_o can_v be_v safe_a so_o high_a o_o how_o many_o have_v grow_v giddy_a and_o fall_v down_o from_o that_o high_a state_n wherein_o they_o be_v for_o want_v of_o the_o foundation_n of_o humility_n how_o many_o who_o seem_v eagle_n tower_v up_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o several_a virtue_n have_v through_o pride_n become_v as_o blind_a as_o bat_n for_o this_o do_v we_o therefore_o stand_v in_o particular_a need_n to_o be_v very_o well_o ground_v in_o this_o virtue_n for_o if_o we_o be_v not_o we_o shall_v run_v great_a hazard_n of_o be_v giddy_a and_o of_o fall_v into_o the_o sin_n of_o pride_n yea_o and_o that_o the_o great_a of_o all_o other_o spiritual_a pride_n bonaventure_n declare_v this_o say_v that_o there_o be_v two_o kind_n of_o pride_n one_o which_o concern_v temporal_a thing_n and_o this_o be_v call_v carnal_a pride_n and_o another_o which_o concern_v thing_n spiritual_a and_o this_o be_v call_v spiritual_a pride_n and_o so_o say_v that_o this_o second_o be_v a_o great_a pride_n and_o a_o great_a sin_n than_o the_o former_a the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v clear_a for_o as_o he_o say_v the_o proud_a man_n be_v a_o thief_n and_o commit_v robbery_n â—â—or_n he_o run_v away_o with_o the_o good_n of_o another_o against_o the_o will_n of_o the_o owner_n by_o have_v steal_v the_o honour_n and_o glory_n which_o be_v proper_a to_o god_n and_o which_o he_o will_v not_o give_v away_o but_o reserve_v to_o himself_o my_o glory_n i_o will_v not_o give_v to_o another_o say_v he_o by_o the_o prophet_n isay_n and_o this_o do_v the_o proud_a man_n steal_v from_o god_n and_o he_o run_v away_o with_o it_o and_o apply_v it_o to_o himself_o now_o when_o a_o man_n grow_v proud_a of_o any_o who_o shall_v grow_v proud_a of_o his_o spiritual_a gift_n as_o namely_o of_o sanctity_n or_o of_o the_o fruit_n which_o be_v gather_v by_o gain_v soul_n this_o be_v a_o great_a thief_n a_o robber_n man_n speak_v ill_a of_o somewhat_o which_o he_o have_v do_v and_o declare_v that_o he_o be_v not_o please_v with_o it_o that_o so_o he_o may_v come_v to_o know_v what_o the_o other_o think_v and_o he_o will_v fain_o hear_v it_o excuse_v and_o that_o the_o other_o shall_v say_v no_o certain_o it_o be_v very_o well_o say_v or_o do_v and_o you_o have_v no_o reason_n at_o all_o to_o be_v disquiet_v fiction_n for_o you_o believe_v not_o that_o there_o be_v any_o fault_n nor_o pretend_v any_o other_o thing_n but_o that_o he_o shall_v praise_v your_o sermon_n and_o that_o he_o shall_v jump_v with_o your_o own_o opinion_n and_o that_o be_v indeed_o the_o thing_n which_o you_o be_v glad_a to_o hear_v for_o if_o by_o accident_n he_o tell_v you_o plain_o of_o any_o fault_n you_o be_v not_o please_v but_o rather_o you_o will_v defend_v it_o and_o sometime_o it_o happen_v that_o you_o will_v judge_v he_o who_o tell_v you_o of_o it_o as_o not_o have_v so_o good_a a_o understanding_n and_o note_n in_o thing_n of_o that_o nature_n because_o he_o hold_v that_o for_o a_o fault_n which_o you_o conceive_v to_o have_v be_v well_o say_v all_o this_o be_v pride_n and_o desire_v of_o praise_n which_o you_o pretend_v to_o satisfy_v by_o this_o counterfeit_a humility_n at_o other_o time_n when_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o conceal_v the_o fault_n we_o confess_v it_o very_o clear_o to_o the_o end_n that_o since_o we_o have_v lose_v a_o point_n of_o honour_n by_o make_v the_o fault_n we_o may_v recover_v it_o again_o by_o confess_v it_o after_o a_o humble_a manner_n at_o other_o time_n say_v bonaventure_n we_o exaggerate_v our_o own_o fault_n and_o say_v more_o than_o be_v true_a to_o the_o end_n that_o other_o see_v that_o it_o be_v neither_o possible_a nor_o credible_a to_o have_v be_v so_o much_o as_o be_v say_v they_o may_v think_v that_o there_o be_v no_o fault_n commit_v at_o all_o that_o so_o they_o may_v cast_v the_o accusation_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o our_o humility_n so_o that_o by_o exaggerate_v and_o declare_v more_o than_o be_v true_a we_o will_v conceal_v the_o fault_n which_o in_o truth_n be_v that_o which_o we_o intend_v by_o a_o thousand_o devise_n and_o trick_n do_v we_o procure_v to_o hide_v and_o disguise_v our_o pride_n under_o the_o cloak_n of_o humility_n and_o thus_o by_o the_o way_n you_o shall_v see_v as_o st_n bernard_n say_v how_o precious_a a_o thing_n humility_n and_o how_o base_a and_o hateful_a pride_n be_v see_v how_o sublime_a and_o glorious_a a_o thing_n humility_n be_v since_o even_o pride_n desire_v to_o serve_v itself_o thereof_o and_o to_o be_v cloak_v therewith_o and_o see_v also_o how_o base_a and_o shameful_a a_o thing_n pride_n be_v since_o it_o dare_v not_o so_o much_o as_o appear_v with_o the_o face_n discover_v but_o overshadow_a and_o disguise_v by_o the_o veil_n of_o humility_n for_o you_o will_v be_v extreme_o ashamed_a and_o hold_v yourselves_o for_o great_o affront_v it_o the_o other_o shall_v understand_v that_o you_o pretend_v and_o desire_v to_o be_v esteem_v and_o praise_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o you_o procure_v to_o cover_v your_o pride_n with_o the_o appearance_n of_o humility_n but_o now_o why_o will_v you_o indeed_o be_v that_o which_o you_o be_v so_o ashamed_a to_o seem_v to_o be_v if_o you_o will_v be_v so_o out_o of_o countenance_n that_o other_o shall_v know_v you_o desire_v to_o be_v esteem_v and_o praise_v why_o be_v you_o not_o much_o more_o ashamed_a to_o desire_v it_o for_o the_o defect_n and_o ill_a thereof_o consist_v in_o the_o act_n itself_o of_o your_o desire_v it_o and_o not_o in_o their_o know_n that_o you_o desire_v it_o and_o if_o you_o be_v ashamed_a that_o man_n shall_v know_v it_o why_o be_v you_o not_o ashamed_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v see_v and_o know_v by_o almighty_a god_n thy_o eye_n o_o lord_n see_v how_o imperfect_a i_o be_o all_o this_o come_v upon_o we_o for_o not_o be_v well_o root_v in_o the_o first_o degree_n of_o humility_n which_o keep_v we_o so_o far_o from_o the_o second_o we_o must_v undertake_v this_o business_n from_o the_o first_o ground_n thereof_o for_o first_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o we_o to_o understand_v our_o own_o misery_n and_o our_o nothing_o and_o from_o this_o kind_n of_o profound_a knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o be_v to_o grow_v a_o base_a conceit_n in_o we_o and_o a_o despise_v and_o contemn_v of_o what_o we_o be_v which_o be_v the_o first_o degree_n of_o humility_n and_o from_o thence_o we_o must_v get_v up_o to_o the_o second_o so_o that_o it_o suffice_v not_o that_o you_o speak_v ill_a of_o yourself_o yea_o even_o though_o you_o speak_v it_o sincere_o and_o from_o your_o heart_n but_o you_o must_v procure_v to_o arrive_v so_o far_o as_o that_o you_o may_v be_v glad_a that_o other_o think_v that_o of_o you_o which_o you_o think_v and_o say_v of_o yourself_o and_o that_o they_o disesteem_v and_o despise_v you_o saint_n john_n climacus_n say_v he_o be_v no_o humble_a man_n who_o be_v content_a to_o abase_v and_o speak_v ill_a of_o himself_o for_o what_o man_n be_v he_o who_o can_v be_v content_a to_o bear_v with_o himself_o but_o that_o man_n be_v humble_a who_o can_v easy_o be_v glad_a to_o be_v ill_o entreat_v and_o despise_v by_o other_o it_o be_v well_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v ever_o be_v speak_v ill_o of_o himself_o and_o confess_v that_o he_o be_v occasion_n be_v offer_v this_o indeed_o be_v true_a humility_n chap._n fourteen_o of_o some_o degree_n and_o step_n whereby_o a_o man_n may_v rise_v to_o the_o perfection_n of_o this_o second_o degree_n of_o humility_n in_o regard_n that_o this_o second_o degree_n of_o humility_n be_v the_o most_o practical_a and_o difficult_a part_n of_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o virtue_n we_o will_v divide_v it_o as_o some_o have_v do_v before_o we_o and_o we_o will_v set_v forth_o four_o degree_n or_o step_n thereof_o that_o so_o by_o little_a and_o little_a and_o as_o it_o be_v by_o measure_a man_n but_o rather_o to_o fly_v from_o all_o that_o which_o have_v any_o touch_n of_o honour_n and_o estimation_n our_o book_n be_v full_a of_o the_o example_n of_o saint_n who_o be_v so_o very_o far_o from_o desire_v to_o be_v esteem_v or_o honour_v by_o the_o world_n as_o that_o they_o flee_v from_o honour_n and_o dignity_n and_o from_o all_o those_o occasion_n which_o may_v bring_v estimation_n with_o they_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n as_o from_o the_o most_o capital_a enemy_n which_o they_o can_v have_v christ_n our_o redeemer_n and_o our_o master_n give_v we_o the_o first_o example_n of_o this_o when_o he_o flee_v upon_o his_o notice_n that_o they_o mean_v to_o choose_v he_o for_o their_o king_n after_o that_o illustrious_a miracle_n of_o have_v feed_v five_o thousand_o man_n with_o five_o loaf_n and_o two_o fish_n when_o yet_o himself_o run_v no_o hazard_n in_o any_o state_n of_o life_n how_o high_a soever_o it_o may_v be_v but_o only_o to_o give_v we_o example_n and_o for_o the_o self_n same_o reason_n when_o he_o be_v please_v to_o manifest_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o most_o sacred_a body_n to_o his_o three_o disciple_n in_o his_o admirable_a transfiguration_n he_o command_v they_o not_o to_o speak_v of_o it_o to_o any_o till_o after_o his_o death_n and_o glorious_a resurrection_n and_o give_v sight_n to_o those_o blind_a man_n and_o work_v of_o other_o miracle_n he_o command_v they_o to_o be_v silent_a and_o all_o this_o be_v do_v to_o give_v we_o a_o exple_n of_o fly_v from_o honour_n and_o the_o estimation_n of_o man_n
those_o gift_n grace_n honour_n and_o estimation_n as_o thing_n extrinsical_a to_o themselves_o and_o receive_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o to_o he_o they_o ascribe_v and_o give_v all_o the_o glory_n and_o praise_v thereof_o themselves_o remain_v still_o entire_a in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o their_o own_o unworthines_n consider_v that_o of_o themselves_o they_o can_v neither_o have_v nor_o do_v any_o good_a thing_n and_o from_o thence_o it_o also_o come_v that_o though_o the_o whole_a world_n exalt_v they_o they_o will_v never_o yet_o exalt_v themselves_o nor_o esteem_v themelve_n one_o jot_n the_o more_o for_o that_o nor_o do_v any_o little_a breach_n thereof_o stick_v to_o their_o heart_n but_o it_o seem_v to_o they_o that_o these_o praise_n be_v not_o utter_v as_o concern_v they_o one_o great_a in_o his_o sight_n and_o second_o because_o in_o itself_o for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v true_o great_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o very_o eminent_a in_o virtue_n and_o perfection_n and_o for_o that_o reason_n to_o be_v high_o value_v and_o esteem_v both_o before_o god_n and_o man_n and_o yet_o in_o the_o mdist_o of_o all_o this_o to_o hold_v himself_o for_o little_a and_o base_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n be_v a_o great_a and_o admirable_a perfection_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o saint_n chrisostome_n and_o saint_n bernard_n do_v so_o much_o wonder_n at_o in_o the_o apostle_n and_o other_o who_o with_o be_v so_o great_a saint_n and_o so_o rich_o full_a of_o grace_n from_o god_n and_o his_o majesty_n work_v such_o wonder_n and_o miracle_n by_o their_o mean_n so_o far_o as_o even_o to_o raise_v the_o dead_a to_o life_n and_o be_v so_o high_o esteem_v for_o these_o thing_n by_o the_o whole_a world_n they_o yet_o nevertheless_o remain_v so_o fix_v in_o their_o unworthines_n and_o baseness_n as_o if_o they_o have_v have_v nothing_o in_o they_o and_o as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v some_o other_o and_o not_o they_o who_o wrought_v those_o great_a thing_n and_o as_o if_o all_o that_o honour_n and_o estimation_n and_o praise_n be_v belong_v to_o other_o and_o as_o if_o they_o have_v be_v impart_v to_o other_o and_o not_o to_o they_o saint_n bearnard_n say_v it_o be_v not_o much_o that_o a_o man_n in_o poverty_n and_o baseness_n shall_v be_v content_a to_o humble_v himself_o for_o that_o which_o indeed_o he_o be_v help_v he_o to_o know_v and_o disesteem_v all_o our_o diligence_n and_o to_o employ_v all_o the_o mean_n we_o can_v to_o obtain_v virtue_n and_o to_o resist_v temptation_n and_o to_o procure_v that_o all_o thing_n may_v succeed_v well_o as_o if_o these_o thing_n alone_o be_v able_a to_o effect_v it_o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o all_o this_o be_v do_v we_o be_v to_o distrust_v our_o elf_n as_o much_o and_o we_o hold_v ourselves_o for_o as_o unprofitable_a as_o if_o god_n have_v do_v nothing_o at_o all_o and_o we_o must_v place_v our_o whole_a confidence_n in_o god_n as_o the_o holy_a ospel_n teach_v when_o you_o have_v do_v all_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v command_v you_o he_o speak_v not_o of_o some_o but_o of_o all_o say_v that_o you_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n and_o to_o say_v this_o right_n you_o will_v have_v need_n of_o some_o virtue_n and_o not_o a_o little_a cassianus_n say_v that_o he_o who_o come_v to_o know_v well_o that_o he_o be_v a_o unprofitable_a servant_n and_o that_o all_o his_o that_o without_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n we_o be_v no_o more_o but_o mere_o a_o body_n without_o a_o soul_n so_o that_o as_o a_o body_n which_o be_v dead_a can_v move_v or_o stir_v itself_o so_o we_o without_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n can_v perform_v the_o work_n of_o life_n or_o value_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n so_o that_o as_o that_o body_n be_v a_o mad_a kind_n of_o thing_n which_o shall_v assume_v the_o act_n of_o live_v and_o move_v to_o itself_o and_o not_o ascribe_v it_o to_o the_o soul_n which_o dwell_v in_o it_o and_o give_v it_o life_n so_o be_v that_o soul_n to_o be_v stark_o blind_a which_o do_v attribute_v the_o good_a work_n which_o it_o do_v to_o itself_o and_o not_o to_o god_n who_o infuse_v into_o it_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n which_o be_v his_o grace_n to_o the_o end_n that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o perform_v they_o and_o in_o another_o place_n he_o say_v that_o as_o our_o corporal_a eye_n though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o sharp_a sight_v yet_o if_o they_o be_v not_o assist_v by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o sun_n can_v discern_v nothing_o so_o a_o man_n how_o much_o soever_o he_o may_v be_v justify_v can_v so_o much_o as_o continue_v to_o live_v
