they_o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o such_o breach_n of_o god_n righteous_a law_n as_o by_o scripture-testimony_n may_v be_v apply_v to_o their_o consideration_n and_o ofttimes_o to_o their_o very_a condition_n of_o which_o nature_n be_v my_o sober_a expostulation_n ground_v upon_o manifest_a error_n and_o abuse_n of_o a_o society_n of_o people_n in_o that_o which_o most_o near_o concern_v they_o for_o this_o cause_n it_o be_v he_o bespatter_v i_o and_o term_n i_o a_o provoke_a and_o affront_a adversary_n if_o this_o humour_n shall_v have_v prevail_v in_o the_o apostle_n day_n what_o work_n thereby_o discredit_v one_o of_o the_o noble_a theory_n in_o the_o world_n i_o apply_v to_o he_o some_o scripture-text_n particular_o that_o of_o the_o 18_o the_o of_o matthew_n where_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n christ_n exhort_v his_o disciple_n to_o avoid_v offend_v one_o of_o the_o little_a one_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o charge_v they_o vers._n 10._o take_v heed_n that_o you_o despise_v not_o one_o of_o the_o little_a one_o and_o from_o thence_o i_o proceed_v and_o say_v i_o fear_v thou_o be_v guilty_a in_o this_o particular_a viz._n of_o despise_v the_o testimony_n of_o god_n in_o his_o principle_n lodge_v in_o every_o man_n breast_n which_o extend_v as_o far_o as_o all_o truth_n whereby_o it_o be_v perceive_v and_o understand_v why_o then_o may_v not_o the_o quaker_n be_v partaker_n of_o divine_a inspiration_n as_o well_o as_o other_o see_v it_o be_v necessary_a for_o all_o true_a christian_n to_o know_v and_o experience_n there_o be_v a_o spirit_n in_o man_n say_v elihu_n and_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o almighty_a give_v understanding_n job_n 32.8_o and_o by_o the_o lithurgy_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n all_o be_v instruct_v to_o pray_v for_o it_o which_o show_v it_o be_v attainable_a as_o appear_v by_o the_o collect_n in_o these_o word_n lord_n easter_n from_o who_o all_o good_a thing_n do_v come_v grant_v we_o thy_o humble_a servant_n that_o purpose_n for_o which_o this_o save_n and_o spiritual_a light_n be_v give_v by_o god_n make_v they_o consist_v in_o make_v manifest_a all_o thing_n that_o be_v reprovable_a in_o teach_v all_o how_o can_v he_o make_v this_o to_o be_v the_o consequence_n of_o r._n b_n proposition_n do_v he_o not_o herein_o as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o former_a quotation_n manifest_o abuse_v his_o ingenious_a argument_n to_o which_o there_o need_v not_o be_v more_o say_v then_o revert_v of_o it_o viz._n as_o the_o quaker_n do_v not_o confine_v the_o divine_a light_n pure_o or_o only_o to_o spiritual_a make_v the_o light_n to_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o with_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n and_o that_o then_o he_o say_v it_o be_v no_o great_a matter_n what_o they_o testify_v and_o declare_v to_o which_o i_o answer_v this_o be_v a_o general_a reflection_n and_o charge_n upon_o his_o own_o mistake_a consequence_n concern_v christ_n the_o light_n as_o he_o be_v a_o middle_a nature_n or_o be_v suppose_v this_o middle_a nature_n or_o be_v to_o be_v a_o distinct_a or_o divide_a substance_n from_o christ_n consequent_o not_o of_o the_o proper_a substance_n or_o nature_n of_o god_n but_o some_o create_v or_o material_a substance_n wherein_o he_o injurious_o infer_v in_o his_o appendix_n that_o the_o quaker_n light_n be_v a_o creature_n and_o a_o material_a creature_n he_o may_v as_o well_o say_v that_o christ_n be_v so_o too_o because_o the_o quaker_n most_o firm_o believe_v he_o be_v that_o true_a light_n which_o lighten_v every_o man_n that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n john_n 1.9_o creature_n as_o j._n n._n represent_v it_o but_o a_o divine_a and_o immaterial_a substance_n wherein_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o a_o most_o heinous_a presumption_n and_o defamation_n of_o the_o quaker_n the_o same_o in_o be_v consequent_o j._n n._n in_o make_v the_o quaker_n principle_n of_o the_o light_n thus_o consider_v and_o by_o he_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v hold_v by_o the_o quaker_n to_o be_v a_o creature_n and_o a_o material_a creature_n be_v to_o make_v christ_n his_o spirit_n and_o life_n so_o too_o which_o be_v not_o only_o a_o wilful_a abuse_n of_o the_o quaker_n but_o a_o gross_a piece_n of_o blasphemy_n and_o this_o be_v that_o monstrous_a birth_n he_o have_v bring_v forth_o and_o recommend_v
be_v the_o occasion_n of_o this_o undertake_n and_o sober_a reply_n not_o only_o to_o vindicate_v the_o cause_n of_o my_o just_a reprehension_n but_o to_o detect_v and_o show_v how_o these_o absurdity_n self-contradiction_n and_o inconsistancy_n he_o will_v be_v think_v to_o have_v fasten_v on_o the_o quaker_n return_v upon_o himself_o as_o may_v appear_v by_o the_o sequel_n wherein_o i_o have_v also_o examine_v i._o n.'s_n new_a invention_n or_o notion_n of_o make_v that_o light_n by_o which_o he_o see_v and_o know_v that_o the_o whole_a be_v more_o than_o a_o part_n and_o that_o 15_o man_n from_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o natural_a state_n that_o the_o consequence_n of_o this_o be_v that_o he_o make_v his_o light_n not_o to_o be_v christ_n for_o christ_n be_v grace_n in_o confound_v and_o bring_v to_o nought_o and_o have_v clear_v his_o truth_n in_o the_o face_n of_o his_o enemy_n from_o the_o many_o gross_a calumny_n of_o our_o day_n and_o cause_v his_o divine_a light_n to_o shine_v out_o of_o darkness_n and_o to_o shine_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o many_o thousand_o to_o give_v they_o the_o light_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o the_o face_n of_o christ_n jesus_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v before_o these_o pretend_a philosophical_a notion_n have_v a_o be_v and_o will_v be_v when_o they_o shall_v have_v no_o place_n one_o may_v attain_v to_o the_o capacity_n of_o introvert_v herself_o to_o the_o divine_a light_n what_o i_o have_v here_o say_v shall_v suffice_v for_o a_o answer_n to_o his_o two_o follow_a page_n wherein_o it_o so_o shall_v pass_v it_o by_o here_o but_o the_o latter_a part_n seem_v to_o have_v a_o very_a ill_a tendency_n and_o reflection_n upon_o they_o which_o compare_v with_o his_o false_a position_n in_o his_o former_a article_n pag._n 22._o viz._n the_o quaker_n represent_v this_o light_n within_o as_o a_o sort_n of_o extraordinary_a inspiration_n from_o whence_o they_o have_v the_o name_n of_o enthusiast_n which_o as_o apply_v to_o the_o quakers_n â—_z bar_n a_o ill_a sense_n and_o signify_v pretender_n to_o new_a fantanstical_a and_o immediate_a inspiration_n not_o common_a to_o other_o menâ—_n as_o i_o have_v before_o observe_v whence_o people_n may_v be_v induce_v to_o believe_v the_o quaker_n to_o be_v indeed_o despiser_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n as_o a_o mere_a dead_a letter_n which_o word_n he_o may_v take_v back_o as_o his_o own_o and_o not_o the_o quaker_n since_o he_o do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o offer_v at_o any_o proof_n for_o they_o my_o charge_n in_o this_o article_n extend_v not_o only_o to_o his_o render_v the_o quaker_n contemptious_a of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n but_o singular_a and_o erroneous_a in_o their_o principle_n of_o the_o light_n and_o the_o holy_a scripture_n as_o useless_a to_o all_o but_o themselves_o which_o i_o prove_v thus_o 1_o sy_n j._n n._n represent_v the_o quaker_n to_o say_v the_o scripture_n be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a dead_a letter_n without_o the_o light_n 2_o dly_z this_o light_n within_o he_o say_v in_o his_o second_o article_n the_o quaker_n represent_v as_o a_o extraordinary_a inspiration_n whence_o they_o have_v the_o name_n of_o enthusiast_n 3_o dly_z in_o his_o 4_o the_o article_n he_o say_v the_o quaker_n make_v their_o light_n within_o a_o special_a privilege_n of_o a_o certain_a order_n of_o man_n their_o own_o party_n make_v none_o but_o those_o of_o their_o own_o way_n to_o be_v actual_o enlighten_v by_o it_o hence_o it_o will_v inevitable_o follow_v upon_o this_o treeble_a supposition_n that_o he_o represent_v the_o quaker_n as_o be_v before_o mention_v contrary_a to_o their_o know_a constant_a and_o long_o profess_a faith_n and_o doctrine_n j._n n._n grant_v the_o consequence_n but_o then_o to_o avoid_v the_o matter_n object_n to_o the_o proposition_n in_o his_o 4_o the_o article_n that_o it_o be_v not_o absolute_o charge_v upon_o the_o quaker_n by_o he_o 72._o here_o he_o betake_v himself_o to_o a_o very_a mean_a shift_n the_o article_n be_v positive_a in_o the_o word_n before_o recite_v his_o distinction_n between_o possibility_n and_o actual_o of_o and_o spiritual_a truth_n and_o than_o it_o be_v his_o plea_n that_o he_o never_o say_v absolute_o and_o simple_o that_o the_o
quaker_n confine_v the_o light_n within_o which_o as_o he_o observe_v will_v imply_v a_o confinement_n to_o person_n that_o plea_n or_o shift_n must_v henceforth_o be_v out_o of_o door_n with_o he_o for_o he_o plain_o assert_n now_o and_o so_o he_o do_v before_o that_o they_o confine_v it_o to_o certain_a man_n or_o man_n of_o a_o certain_a order_n viz._n their_o own_o party_n as_o to_o the_o act_n of_o illumination_n and_o i_o think_v that_o confinement_n sufficient_a to_o exclude_v all_o other_o from_o the_o mean_n of_o partake_v or_o enjoy_v of_o it_o to_o prove_v this_o he_o take_v divine_a light_n do_v confine_v the_o divine_a light_n as_o to_o the_o act_n of_o illumination_n to_o the_o regenerate_v 78.79_o but_o the_o quaker_n do_v exclude_v all_o man_n that_o be_v in_o their_o natural_a and_o corrupt_a estate_n from_o the_o actual_a illumination_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n therefore_o the_o quaker_n do_v confine_v the_o divine_a light_n as_o to_o the_o act_n of_o shall_v have_v be_v put_v in_o the_o same_o differ_a character_n with_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o proposition_n that_o they_o may_v have_v be_v distinguish_v to_o have_v belong_v thereto_o see_v they_o bear_v so_o great_a weight_n well_o then_o so_o far_o r._n b._n be_v right_a and_o the_o quotation_n prove_v nothing_o for_o j._n n_n purpose_n for_o sure_o a_o dead_a man_n as_o such_o have_v no_o sense_n nor_o can_v have_v till_o he_o be_v in_o some_o degree_n quicken_v we_o must_v then_o distinguish_v upon_o this_o natural_a and_o corrupt_a estate_n which_o will_v lead_v we_o to_o this_o question_n whether_o a_o man_n after_o he_o be_v in_o and_o through_o the_o day_n and_o time_n of_o his_o visitation_n in_o some_o measure_n quicken_v through_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o which_o the_o dead_a come_v to_o hear_v and_o live_v may_v not_o still_o remain_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n in_o his_o natural_a and_o corrupt_a estate_n subject_n to_o the_o power_n nature_n and_o seed_n of_o the_o serpent_n and_o yet_o have_v some_o sensation_n and_o feel_v of_o the_o light_n at_o some_o time_n or_o season_n during_o the_o continuance_n of_o the_o day_n of_o his_o visitation_n i_o presume_v there_o be_v few_o but_o who_o experience_n will_v oblige_v they_o to_o confess_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o i_o be_o sure_a the_o holy_a scripture_n plain_o teach_v it_o it_o must_v then_o be_v grant_v that_o this_o distinction_n ought_v to_o be_v hold_v between_o the_o different_a state_n of_o man_n in_o the_o fall_n viz._n as_o degenerate_v &_o dead_a in_o the_o first_o adam_n and_o visit_v and_o quicken_v by_o the_o second_o adam_n of_o which_o latter_a sort_n the_o generality_n of_o mankind_n either_o be_v or_o have_v be_v i_o say_v have_v be_v because_o too_o many_o after_o they_o have_v be_v quicken_v have_v die_v again_o and_o so_o twice_o dead_a and_o pluck_v up_o by_o the_o root_n the_o day_n of_o their_o visitation_n be_v over_o for_o altogether_o without_o the_o sensation_n and_o feel_v of_o the_o light_n by_o such_o sensation_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n which_o at_o some_o time_n and_o season_n they_o experience_n in_o themselves_o they_o may_v proper_o be_v say_v to_o be_v actual_o enlighten_v by_o it_o though_o they_o apply_v not_o their_o mind_n to_o hearken_v diligent_o to_o or_o to_o attend_v and_o consult_v it_o much_o less_o to_o follow_v and_o obey_v it_o now_o i_o hope_v he_o will_v grant_v his_o argument_n fail_v because_o its_o foundation_n in_o the_o proposition_n its_o self_n be_v weak_a light_n to_o their_o own_o party_n to_o which_o i_o say_v if_o lie_v story_n and_o false_a insinuation_n be_v good_a reason_n he_o have_v it_o and_o not_o otherwise_o for_o it_o be_v a_o extravagant_a charge_n and_o spiteful_a reflection_n at_o rover_n and_o doubtless_o if_o not_o invent_v be_v take_v upon_o trust_n so_o far_o as_o it_o may_v affect_v any_o particulars_n under_o the_o profession_n of_o quaker_n and_o either_o way_n as_o general_o apply_v be_v a_o abuse_n for_o as_o it_o be_v general_a it_o be_v most_o certain_o false_a and_o injurious_a and_o bespeak_v he_o to_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n and_o drive_v to_o a_o pinch_n to_o use_v his_o wit_n or_o as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v when_o man_n be_v sink_v to_o catch_v at_o any_o thing_n but_o be_v he_o so_o weak_a as_o to_o think_v this_o will_v make_v for_o his_o purpose_n it_o induce_v i_o with_o some_o other_o to_o believe_v that_o his_o companion_n reproach_n have_v make_v he_o ashamed_a of_o what_o he_o first_o say_v in_o confine_v the_o divine_a light_n to_o their_o own_o party_n as_o to_o the_o regenerate_v however_o he_o think_v his_o news_n may_v prevail_v upon_o the_o credulity_n of_o his_o learned_a world_n i_o
