piece_n be_v to_o speak_v untrue_o or_o in_o plain_a english_a a_o lie_n now_o be_v all_o man_n redeem_v redemption_n can_v be_v more_o universal_a than_o it_o be_v in_o matter_n of_o fact_n if_o ten_o man_n be_v in_o slavery_n in_o algiers_n and_o a_o sum_n of_o money_n be_v pay_v to_o redeem_v they_o and_o yet_o after_o all_o care_n be_v not_o take_v to_o make_v that_o ransom_n to_o be_v effectual_a for_o their_o redemption_n but_o six_o or_o seven_o of_o they_o be_v leave_v in_o captivity_n can_v any_o man_n say_v all_o the_o ten_o be_v redeem_v out_o of_o that_o slavery_n and_o thraldom_n wherein_o they_o be_v hold_v even_o so_o it_o be_v here_o for_o man_n to_o say_v that_o the_o redemption_n by_o christ_n be_v for_o all_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o the_o great_a part_n of_o say_v forasmuch_o as_o you_o know_v that_o you_o be_v not_o redeem_v with_o corruptible_a thing_n as_o silver_n and_o gold_n from_o a_o vain_a conversation_n 18._o but_o with_o the_o precious_a power_n of_o satan_n he_o set_v they_o at_o liberty_n who_o natural_o be_v bind_v and_o bring_v they_o out_o of_o the_o prisonhouse_n so_o many_o and_o no_o more_o do_v he_o die_v for_o and_o no_o further_o do_v redemption_n by_o christ_n extend_v 3._o if_o there_o be_v many_o leave_v in_o the_o enemy_n hand_n and_o under_o their_o power_n and_o eternal_o perish_v then_o there_o be_v no_o general_n or_o universal_a redemption_n but_o there_o be_v multitude_n so_o leave_v and_o perish_v 4._o that_o grace_n love_n and_o bless_a price_n that_o do_v not_o procure_v universal_a salvation_n be_v not_o can_v be_v a_o universal_a redemption_n but_o god_n never_o show_v such_o grace_n and_o love_n by_o the_o price_n of_o christ_n blood_n that_o do_v procure_v universal_a salvation_n therefore_o there_o be_v no_o universal_a redemption_n for_o that_o price_n or_o paiment_n which_o do_v not_o actual_o pass_v or_o terminate_v in_o salvation_n be_v no_o redemption_n at_o all_o a_o attempt_n to_o redeem_v unless_o it_o be_v
god_n sight_n and_o accept_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n merit_n not_o that_o christ_n righteousness_n alone_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o justification_n exclusive_a of_o all_o our_o inherent_a righteousness_n and_o obedience_n no_o no_o but_o rather_o it_o be_v our_o righteousness_n which_o do_v justify_v we_o the_o gospel_n according_a to_o these_o man_n be_v propound_v as_o a_o law_n and_o god_n as_o a_o rector_n or_o just_a governor_n command_v obedience_n thereunto_o as_o the_o procure_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n so_o that_o our_o faith_n and_o obedience_n be_v a_o cause_n and_o condition_n of_o life_n as_o unbelief_n and_o disobedience_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o eternal_a death_n but_o have_v former_o detect_v this_o dangerous_a error_n i_o shall_v not_o further_o insist_v upon_o the_o confutation_n of_o it_o here_o 5._o such_o preach_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n that_o render_v man_n a_o co-worker_n with_o christ_n in_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o own_o soul_n by_o which_o mean_v there_o be_v room_n leave_v for_o he_o to_o boast_v and_o glory_n such_o a_o doctrine_n they_o preach_v who_o magnify_v the_o will_n of_o man_n or_o the_o power_n of_o the_o creature_n which_o i_o hope_v i_o have_v by_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n sufficient_o detect_v and_o refute_v in_o this_o treatise_n all_o boast_a be_v exclude_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n man_n be_v abase_v and_o god_n alone_o exalt_v application_n i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o make_v the_o general_a application_n of_o what_o i_o have_v say_v unto_o you_o from_o this_o great_a text_n and_o so_o conclude_v with_o all_o i_o shall_v say_v from_o it_o first_o inform._n first_o by_o way_n of_o information_n the_o doctrine_n which_o have_v in_o these_o sermon_n be_v insist_v on_o may_v inform_v we_o that_o gospel-sin_n be_v the_o great_a sin_n and_o that_o the_o blind_a heathen_n be_v not_o can_v be_v so_o guilty_a and_o culpable_a before_o god_n nor_o in_o do_v in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n that_o live_v in_o england_n in_o london_n in_o a_o land_n and_o city_n of_o so_o great_a light_n and_o perish_v through_o their_o sin_n and_o contempt_n or_o neglect_v of_o gospel-grace_n second_o this_o may_v also_o inform_v we_o how_o strange_o mankind_n be_v blind_v and_o deceive_v by_o the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n in_o that_o small_a thing_n be_v account_v great_a and_o that_o which_o be_v of_o the_o great_a concernment_n be_v little_a or_o not_o at_o all_o regard_v but_o esteem_v as_o a_o trivial_a matter_n o_o say_v some_o we_o must_v mind_v the_o main_a chance_n they_o mean_v the_o main_a business_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o earthly_a subsistence_n which_o be_v to_o get_v bread_n and_o to_o provide_v for_o the_o body_n for_o their_o wife_n and_o child_n now_o the_o doctrine_n which_o you_o have_v hear_v show_v you_o how_o you_o be_v delude_v that_o look_v upon_o earthly_a thing_n to_o be_v the_o main_a business_n you_o shall_v look_v after_o what_o be_v of_o such_o importance_n as_o the_o salvation_n of_o your_o precious_a and_o immortal_a soul_n and_o to_o be_v provide_v for_o a_o endless_a eternity_n three_o i_o may_v infer_v from_o hence_o that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o mankind_n be_v unbeliever_n for_o all_o that_o neglect_v this_o salvation_n and_o look_v not_o upon_o this_o matter_n as_o their_o chief_a business_n be_v doubtless_o in_o a_o state_n of_o unbelief_n they_o do_v not_o credit_v this_o holy_a doctrine_n they_o believe_v not_o god_n word_n if_o one_o shall_v tell_v you_o that_o be_v go_v a_o journey_n that_o if_o you_o go_v such_o a_o way_n you_o will_v certain_o be_v destroy_v by_o thief_n or_o wild_a beast_n yet_o you_o will_v go_v on_o will_v it_o not_o follow_v clear_o that_o you_o believe_v not_o what_o be_v tell_v you_o why_o thus_o it_o be_v here_o sinner_n be_v tell_v and_o assure_v from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o certain_a as_o god_n be_v true_a and_o his_o word_n true_a that_o if_o they_o leave_v not_o their_o swear_v their_o pride_n their_o drunkenness_n their_o lie_v their_o lust_n and_o uncleanness_n their_o worldly-mindedness_a and_o their_o prefer_v earth_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n above_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n or_o if_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v repent_v and_o be_v bear_v again_o they_o shall_v certain_o perish_v for_o ever_o yet_o they_o go_v on_o and_o live_v in_o those_o way_n of_o sin_n and_o believe_v not_o repent_v not_o this_o be_v a_o evident_a sign_n that_o they_o do_v not_o give_v credit_n to_o what_o be_v tell_v they_o and_o so_o be_v unbeliever_n and_o if_o they_o still_o persist_v in_o their_o way_n they_o will_v be_v certain_o damn_v 1._o our_o saviour_n say_v except_o you_o repent_v you_o shall_v all_o their_o good_a deed_n their_o good_a duty_n their_o prayer_n their_o hear_n of_o sermon_n or_o their_o be_v baptise_a and_o have_v communion_n with_o god_n people_n will_v not_o do_v unless_o they_o be_v save_o renew_v and_o sanctify_a have_v the_o true_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o lead_v a_o godly_a holy_a and_o spiritual_a life_n find_v the_o powerful_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n change_v they_o into_o the_o likeness_n of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o they_o believe_v it_o not_o but_o rest_n upon_o their_o duty_n and_o outward_a privilege_n though_o they_o be_v tell_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n be_v not_o in_o meat_n and_o drink_n but_o in_o righteousness_n and_o truth_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n be_v not_o inward_a only_o but_o in_o power_n also_o and_o that_o lamp_n of_o profession_n will_v not_o save_v they_o except_o they_o have_v oil_n in_o their_o vessel_n many_o of_o these_o be_v like_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n and_o believe_v it_o not_o but_o rest_n on_o a_o bare_a name_n of_o christian_n on_o a_o form_n of_o godliness_n and_o may_v be_v fall_n short_a too_o as_o to_o a_o outward_a profession_n of_o godliness_n for_o so_o do_v they_o who_o pray_v not_o in_o the_o closet_n nor_o in_o their_o family_n neither_o read_v god_n word_n nor_o make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n preach_v in_o season_n and_o out_o of_o season_n but_o every_o small_a matter_n take_v they_o off_o of_o those_o duty_n be_v sure_a all_o prayerless_a soul_n be_v graceless_a soul_n it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v many_o of_o this_o sort_n make_v religion_n but_o little_a of_o their_o business_n who_o neither_o read_v pray_v nor_o meditate_v nor_o perhaps_o call_v upon_o their_o child_n the_o gospel_n or_o may_v like_o some_o precept_n but_o not_o like_o some_o other_o of_o they_o every_o word_n of_o god_n with_o these_o be_v not_o precious_a they_o can_v deny_v themselves_o and_o follow_v christ_n whither_o soever_o he_o go_v they_o be_v not_o like_o david_n who_o say_v every_o word_n of_o god_n be_v pure_a therefore_o i_o love_v thy_o commandment_n above_o gold_n yea_o above_o 128._o fine_a gold_n therefore_o i_o esteem_v all_o thy_o precept_n concern_v all_o thing_n to_o be_v right_a and_o i_o hate_v every_o false_a way_n 4._o a_o bare_a taste_n or_o a_o simple_a much_o for_o the_o poor_a saint_n or_o a_o small_a matter_n a_o great_a deal_n to_o be_v give_v to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n it_o be_v evident_a these_o person_n give_v little_a or_o nothing_o to_o the_o poor_a saint_n by_o what_o the_o apostle_n speak_v in_o the_o verse_n follow_v our_o text_n and_o therefore_o no_o sincere_a believer_n for_o god_n be_v not_o unrighteous_a to_o forget_v your_o work_n of_o faith_n and_o labour_n of_o love_n in_o that_o you_o have_v minister_v to_o the_o saint_n etc._n etc._n you_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v be_v not_o of_o that_o sort_n i_o be_o a_o speak_n of_o they_o do_v not_o love_v the_o child_n of_o god_n though_o they_o have_v have_v a_o taste_n of_o the_o word_n this_o one_o virtue_n brethren_n be_v more_o than_o all_o those_o five_o attainment_n mention_v in_o my_o text_n when_o that_o which_o a_o man_n give_v be_v give_v in_o love_n to_o christ_n 5._o yet_o this_o bare_a taste_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v may_v have_v some_o effect_n upon_o these_o man_n heart_n 1._o they_o may_v find_v some_o kind_n of_o delight_n in_o that_o knowledge_n they_o have_v of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o may_v speak_v in_o the_o commendation_n and_o vindication_n thereof_o thus_o balaam_n seem_v wonderful_o to_o be_v affect_v with_o the_o state_n of_o israel_n and_o with_o the_o tabernacle_n and_o tent_n of_o jacob_n yet_o he_o love_v the_o wage_n of_o unrighteousness_n 2._o it_o may_v work_v as_o you_o hear_v last_o day_n a_o visible_a change_n in_o they_o such_o a_o power_n may_v go_v along_o with_o that_o taste_n they_o like_o saul_n may_v become_v other_o men._n 3._o they_o may_v have_v the_o same_o lamp_n of_o profession_n with_o true_a christian_n and_o be_v take_v for_o real_a convert_v not_o know_v to_o the_o godly_a but_o to_o be_v such_o the_o wise_a virgin_n doubtless_o think_v well_o of_o the_o foolish_a they_o do_v not_o know_v they_o be_v unsound_a or_o foolish_a one_o 4._o such_o a_o work_n and_o effect_v the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o taste_n of_o the_o word_n may_v have_v that_o they_o may_v be_v full_a of_o great_a expectation_n of_o bâ—ing_v embrace_v by_o christ_n when_o he_o come_v if_o they_o fall_v not_o away_o before_o it_o be_v say_v the_o foolish_a virgin_n go_v out_o to_o meet_v the_o bridegroom_n they_o have_v much_o confidence_n may_v be_v more_o confidence_n though_o it_o be_v self-confidence_n that_o the_o wise_a for_o true_a believer_n may_v be_v attend_v with_o many_o doubt_n dr._n owen_n speak_v of_o this_o sort_n mention_v in_o my_o text_n say_v and_o no_o doubt_n say_v the_o truth_n that_o there_o be_v a_o inferior_a common_a work_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o word_n on_o many_o to_o who_o it_o be_v preach_v cause_v in_o they_o a_o great_a alteration_n and_o change_n as_o to_o light_n knowledge_n ability_n gift_n affection_n life_n and_o conversation_n when_o the_o person_n so_o wrought_v upon_o be_v not_o quicken_v regenerate_v or_o make_v new_a creature_n nor_o unite_v to_o jesus_n christ_n that_o in_o the_o person_n thus_o wrought_v upon_o there_o be_v or_o may_v be_v such_o a_o assent_n and_o light_n and_o conviction_n of_o the_o truth_n propose_v and_o preach_v to_o they_o as_o in_o its_o kind_n be_v true_a not_o counterfeit_a giving_z or_o afford_v to_o they_o a_o profession_n of_o the_o faith_n that_o be_v they_o be_v blind_v and_o know_v not_o that_o they_o be_v unsound_a in_o the_o main_n their_o heart_n for_o want_n of_o true_a light_n deceive_v they_o as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n nay_o and_o they_o may_v perhaps_o hold_v out_o in_o their_o profession_n constant_o unto_o death_n nay_o may_v give_v their_o body_n to_o be_v burn_v 2._o o_o see_v brethren_n that_o your_o faith_n be_v the_o faith_n of_o god_n elect_n and_o that_o you_o be_v save_o renew_v o_o look_v about_o you_o since_o it_o may_v be_v thus_o the_o doctor_n add_v that_o among_o these_o person_n be_v ofttimes_o some_o that_o be_v endue_v with_o excellent_a gift_n and_o lovely_a part_n qualification_n and_o ability_n render_v they_o very_o useful_a to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n be_v vessel_n in_o his_o house_n to_o hold_v and_o convey_v to_o other_o the_o precious_a liquor_n of_o the_o gospel_n though_o never_o have_v their_o own_o evil_a heart_n change_v to_o which_o let_v i_o add_v they_o be_v such_o or_o of_o this_o sort_n of_o person_n who_o be_v liable_a to_o sin_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o so_o fall_v that_o it_o may_v be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o be_v renew_v by_o repentance_n yet_o before_o they_o so_o fall_v it_o may_v not_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o become_v true_a convert_v the_o nature_n of_o which_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n i_o purpose_v to_o open_a before_o i_o close_o with_o this_o text._n four_o i_o shall_v proceed_v to_o show_v you_o what_o a_o taste_n of_o god_n and_o 2._o of_o his_o good_a word_n it_o be_v which_o all_o true_a believer_n have_v 1._o it_o be_v a_o taste_n that_o arise_v from_o spiritual_a hunger_n there_o be_v a_o true_a sense_n of_o want_n they_o have_v a_o crave_v appetite_n and_o nothing_o but_o god_n in_o christ_n can_v satisfy_v their_o soul_n my_o soul_n thirst_v for_o god_n for_o the_o live_a god_n say_v david_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o they_o be_v pronounce_v bless_v bless_v be_v they_o which_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n after_o righteousness_n 6._o for_o they_o shall_v be_v fill_v not_o have_v only_o a_o taste_n no_o no_o but_o they_o shall_v be_v fill_v they_o shall_v eat_v to_o satisfaction_n they_o see_v that_o they_o want_v a_o righteousness_n whereby_o they_o may_v be_v declare_v just_a and_o righteous_a before_o god_n
