prayer_n but_o now_o for_o the_o manner_n of_o prayer_n the_o most_o thing_n i_o confess_v be_v there_o first_o when_o we_o come_v to_o prayer_n we_o must_v be_v sure_a to_o pray_v with_o understanding_n 1_o cor._n 14.15_o what_o be_v it_o then_o i_o will_v pray_v with_o the_o â—â—irâ—â—_n and_o will_v pray_v with_o understand_v also_o god_n do_v not_o love_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o fool_n we_o must_v not_o come_v babble_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n to_o speak_v we_o know_v not_o what_o and_o to_o multiply_v word_n we_o know_v not_o wherefore_o but_o god_n do_v require_v that_o those_o that_o come_v to_o prayer_n come_v with_o understanding_n that_o they_o offer_v to_o god_n a_o rational_a a_o reasonable_a a_o understand_a sacrifice_n god_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o he_o will_v be_v worship_v in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n now_o as_o it_o belong_v to_o all_o other_o duty_n of_o worship_n so_o especial_o in_o prayer_n to_o know_v what_o we_o do_v when_o we_o pray_v not_o to_o think_v to_o put_v off_o god_n with_o a_o mere_a empty_a sound_n that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n the_o second_o thing_n in_o the_o manner_n of_o prayer_n it_o be_v the_o give_v up_o all_o the_o faculty_n of_o our_o soul_n in_o it_o i_o speak_v to_o that_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o general_a we_o shall_v apply_v it_o now_o particular_o to_o prayer_n the_o give_v up_o not_o only_o our_o understanding_n but_o will_n thought_n affection_n strength_n in_o prayer_n in_o 2_o chron._n 20.3_o it_o be_v say_v of_o jehoshaphat_n that_o he_o set_v himself_o to_o seek_v the_o lord_n he_o do_v give_v his_o whole_a self_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n we_o be_v to_o give_v our_o whole_a self_n and_o not_o to_o divide_v in_o prayer_n now_o there_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o indeed_o may_v well_o take_v up_o a_o whole_a sermon_n in_o show_v the_o evil_a of_o the_o wander_a of_o our_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n we_o shall_v take_v heed_n of_o the_o wander_a of_o our_o spirit_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o so_o in_o prayer_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v much_o trouble_v with_o the_o wander_a of_o their_o thought_n both_o in_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o it_o be_v their_o great_a burden_n and_o shall_v be_v so_o but_o i_o never_o hear_v any_o more_o complain_n of_o the_o wander_a of_o their_o spirit_n than_o in_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v much_o pester_v in_o their_o spirit_n with_o this_o evil_a it_o be_v very_o grievous_a unto_o they_o and_o many_o of_o they_o go_v under_o it_o as_o a_o grievous_a burden_n all_o their_o day_n the_o chief_a burden_n that_o be_v upon_o their_o spirit_n be_v their_o wander_a in_o prayer_n so_o that_o if_o god_n shall_v speak_v to_o they_o as_o he_o speak_v unto_o solomon_n and_o bid_v he_o ask_v what_o he_o shall_v give_v he_o i_o very_o believe_v there_o be_v many_o in_o this_o congregation_n that_o have_v already_o good_a assurance_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n if_o they_o have_v not_o that_o that_o will_v be_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o they_o will_v ask_v but_o have_v attain_v that_o if_o god_n will_v speak_v from_o heaven_n and_o say_v what_o shall_v i_o give_v you_o for_o yourselves_o if_o he_o shall_v ask_v you_o in_o the_o general_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v ask_v something_o for_o the_o church_n but_o if_o it_o be_v for_o yourselves_o you_o will_v put_v up_o this_o petition_n oh_o lord_n that_o i_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o a_o wander_a spirit_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o especial_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n that_o i_o may_v thereby_o come_v to_o enjoy_v more_o holy_a communion_n with_o thyself_o than_o ever_o yet_o i_o enjoy_v and_o they_o will_v account_v this_o to_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n than_o if_o god_n shall_v give_v they_o to_o be_v king_n or_o queen_n over_o the_o whole_a world_n if_o god_n shall_v put_v these_o two_o into_o the_o balance_n either_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o possess_v or_o otherwise_o to_o have_v more_o free_a heart_n in_o come_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o that_o have_v so_o much_o hinder_v their_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o prayer_n they_o will_v despise_v and_o scorn_v the_o the_o world_n in_o comparison_n of_o such_o a_o mercy_n as_o this_o be_v howsoever_o carnal_a heart_n they_o think_v little_a of_o it_o but_o those_o that_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n they_o find_v it_o to_o be_v very_o grievous_a to_o they_o but_o be_v the_o time_n be_v past_a i_o shall_v reserve_v that_o to_o speak_v yet_o a_o little_a more_o large_o for_o the_o help_n of_o those_o that_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o it_o i_o will_v only_o speak_v one_o thing_n further_o now_o and_o that_o shall_v be_v to_o those_o that_o be_v wicked_a and_o vile_a that_o not_o only_o have_v vain_a wander_a thought_n in_o prayer_n but_o even_o in_o the_o very_a duty_n of_o prayer_n many_o time_n have_v wicked_a and_o ungodly_a thought_n how_o horrible_a be_v they_o unclean_a thought_n murderous_a thought_n it_o may_v be_v and_o most_o abominable_a i_o confess_v even_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a may_v sometime_o have_v some_o blasphemous_a thought_n cast_v into_o they_o for_o the_o devil_n be_v never_o more_o busy_a than_o at_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n but_o they_o rather_o come_v from_o the_o devil_n than_o from_o the_o stream_n and_o corruption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n which_o may_v be_v we_o may_v make_v out_o more_o clear_o afterward_o but_o now_o i_o speak_v to_o such_o as_o have_v most_o wicked_a abominable_a thought_n rise_v from_o the_o stream_n and_o corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n such_o thought_n as_o their_o heart_n do_v close_o withal_o in_o prayer_n and_o they_o can_v roll_n those_o thought_n about_o in_o their_o mind_n as_o a_o child_n will_v roll_n a_o piece_n of_o sugar_n in_o its_o mouth_n and_o this_o be_v the_o wickedness_n of_o many_o man_n and_o woman_n heart_n take_v but_o this_o one_o note_n with_o you_o that_o all_o those_o dreadful_a vile_a unclean_a covetous_a thought_n of_o thou_o in_o prayer_n they_o have_v be_v to_o god_n as_o if_o you_o have_v speak_v they_o in_o word_n thought_n to_o god_n be_v all_o one_o with_o he_o as_o word_n be_v to_o man_n for_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n do_v converse_v with_o god_n in_o thought_n as_o well_o as_o man_n do_v converse_v with_o man_n in_o word_n and_o what_o a_o woeful_a guiltiness_n will_v have_v be_v upon_o you_o have_v you_o speak_v such_o vile_a and_o wicked_a thing_n to_o man_n as_o sometime_o have_v be_v in_o your_o mind_n even_o when_o you_o have_v be_v pray_v to_o god_n how_o will_v the_o company_n have_v even_o spit_v in_o your_o face_n and_o kick_v you_o from_o the_o mercy_n seat_v it_o be_v a_o type_n of_o jesus_n christ_n now_o the_o incense_n shall_v cover_v the_o mercy_n seat_n so_o our_o prayer_n must_v go_v up_o to_o jesus_n christ_n must_v be_v upon_o he_o and_o so_o must_v be_v accept_v by_o the_o father_n and_o as_o we_o read_v in_o judg._n 13.20_o when_o manoah_n offer_v a_o sacrifice_n the_o text_n say_v that_o the_o angel_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o name_n of_o jesus_n christ_n how_o many_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o have_v be_v professor_n of_o religion_n 20_o or_o 30_o year_n and_o yet_o not_o acquaint_v with_o this_o great_a mystery_n the_o heathen_n that_o be_v corporeal_a than_o it_o be_v another_o matter_n then_o bodily_a worship_n will_v serve_v the_o turn_n but_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n he_o must_v have_v spiritual_a worship_n worship_n therefore_o it_o be_v the_o soul_n that_o god_n do_v principal_o look_v at_o in_o holy_a duty_n if_o you_o be_v not_o able_a to_o worship_n god_n in_o your_o body_n you_o may_v worship_v he_o in_o your_o soul_n and_o god_n regard_v that_o bodily_a exercise_n in_o holy_a duty_n be_v little_a worth_n somewhat_o it_o may_v be_v worth_a i_o confess_v sometime_o bodily_a exercise_n may_v further_o the_o soul_n as_o a_o reverend_a carriage_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o like_a but_o it_o be_v nothing_o in_o comparison_n the_o great_a work_n be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o must_v be_v worship_v in_o spirit_n and_o god_n be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o spirit_n not_o only_o in_o that_o he_o be_v not_o of_o so_o thick_a a_o corporal_a substance_n but_o it_o note_v the_o simplicity_n of_o god_n he_o be_v without_o any_o composition_n whatsoever_o be_v in_o god_n be_v god_n himself_o he_o be_v absolute_o one_o there_o be_v not_o divers_a thing_n the_o praise_n of_o man_n to_o be_v thy_o god_n for_o whatsoever_o thou_o do_v lift_v up_o in_o the_o high_a place_n that_o be_v thy_o god_n whatsoever_o it_o be_v therefore_o if_o thou_o lifte_v up_o ourselves_o yet_o we_o must_v look_v high_a we_o must_v look_v at_o the_o honour_n and_o praise_n of_o god_n that_o the_o name_n of_o the_o bless_a god_n may_v be_v honour_v now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o can_v be_v at_o quiet_a except_o they_o attend_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n but_o still_o this_o be_v not_o enough_o mere_o to_o satisfy_v conscience_n thy_o main_a end_n it_o
