along_o humble_o seek_v after_o truth_n and_o the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o god_n shall_v make_v out_o the_o same_o to_o i_o i_o see_v thingsclear_a and_o with_o much_o evidence_n and_o inward_a light_a thing_n be_v make_v out_o to_o i_o but_o at_o such_o a_o time_n i_o remember_v after_o i_o have_v get_v a_o little_a light_n into_o such_o a_o truth_n i_o grow_v proud_a and_o self-conceited_a and_o wanton_a with_o what_o i_o have_v attain_v and_o there_o i_o sensible_o find_v the_o spirit_n leave_v i_o and_o ever_o since_o i_o have_v be_v seek_v after_o that_o truth_n but_o have_v not_o have_v that_o inward_a light_n to_o direct_v i_o nor_o than_o evidence_n nor_o clearness_n concern_v the_o thing_n i_o have_v find_v out_o as_o before_o i_o have_v quest_n but_o how_o shall_v i_o come_v to_o this_o to_o follow_v the_o spirit_n answ_n 1._o observe_v when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n go_v before_o thou_o either_o in_o the_o discovery_n of_o any_o truth_n or_o help_v thou_o in_o any_o thing_n that_o concern_v thy_o practice_n sometime_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n go_v so_o manifest_o with_o a_o believer_n either_o in_o the_o help_a of_o he_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o some_o thing_n or_o two_o way_n and_o must_v choose_v one_o yet_o not_o able_a to_o resolve_v myself_o in_o which_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v the_o solution_n of_o the_o case_n from_o this_o general_a rule_n be_v that_o i_o be_o to_o choose_v that_o thing_n or_o way_n in_o and_o by_o which_o i_o may_v best_o reach_v the_o aforesaid_a ultimate_a end_n but_o now_o because_o when_o the_o case_n be_v such_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o know_v which_o thing_n or_o way_n will_v most_o conduce_v to_o the_o attainment_n of_o this_o ultimate_a end_n therefore_o we_o be_v yet_o in_o the_o dark_a without_o something_o further_o add_v let_v it_o therefore_o be_v consider_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a glorify_v of_o god_n 1_o a_o glorify_v god_n in_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o agent_n 2_o a_o glorify_v god_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o act_n which_o consist_v in_o shun_v and_o avoid_v such_o thing_n by_o which_o god_n be_v dishonour_v and_o in_o our_o follow_v and_o embrace_v such_o action_n which_o have_v in_o they_o a_o tendency_n to_o glorify_v he_o the_o first_o viz._n the_o glorify_v of_o god_n in_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o agent_n be_v not_o indeed_o proper_o a_o glorify_v of_o god_n in_o case_n the_o other_o be_v not_o join_v with_o it_o for_o a_o man_n through_o ignorance_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n may_v do_v such_o a_o action_n as_o be_v in_o itself_o evil_a and_o tend_v to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n and_o that_o with_o a_o good_a intention_n peter_n intention_n be_v good_a viz._n to_o preserve_v his_o master_n from_o danger_n and_o this_o spring_v from_o his_o love_n and_o affection_n to_o he_o when_o he_o dissuade_v he_o from_o go_v up_o to_o jerusalem_n to_o suffer_v yet_o be_v his_o action_n evil_a and_o tend_v much_o to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n in_o the_o latter_a therefore_o but_o so_o as_o join_v with_o the_o former_a this_o active_a glorify_v of_o god_n consist_v when_o as_o together_o with_o my_o good_a intention_n to_o glorify_v god_n there_o be_v something_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o act_n itself_o which_o i_o perform_v that_o have_v a_o tendency_n to_o glorify_v god_n now_o as_o to_o the_o present_a case_n will_v i_o know_v whether_o my_o go_v this_o way_n or_o that_o way_n will_v most_o glorify_v god_n why_o then_o consider_v not_o only_o the_o different_a way_n but_o consider_v also_o thy_o own_o action_n thy_o action_n lie_v in_o thy_o motion_n as_o there_o be_v a_o way_n and_o a_o way_n so_o also_o there_o be_v a_o motion_n in_o it_o this_o or_o that_o way_n in_o this_o motion_n consist_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o act_n now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n in_o this_o motion_n consider_v it_o apart_o from_o the_o intention_n for_o that_o be_v another_o thing_n that_o have_v a_o tendency_n either_o to_o strip_v god_n of_o any_o part_n of_o his_o honour_n or_o contrariwise_o to_o glorify_v he_o than_o i_o may_v by_o it_o conclude_v which_o way_n i_o be_o to_o take_v if_o in_o my_o motion_n on_o one_o hand_n i_o entrench_v upon_o god_n honour_n in_o this_o or_o that_o point_n than_o whatsoever_o my_o intention_n be_v tho_o seem_o ever_o so_o pious_a yet_o must_v i_o not_o venture_v there_o because_o there_o be_v a_o evil_a and_o a_o dishonour_n to_o god_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o act_n if_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n i_o do_v not_o only_o intend_v god_n honour_n but_o can_v also_o carry_v it_o along_o with_o i_o and_o visible_o hold_v it_o forth_o in_o the_o way_n as_o i_o go_v then_o may_v i_o safe_o go_v there_o yea_o that_o be_v the_o way_n i_o be_o to_o take_v to_o illustrate_v this_o in_o a_o particular_a case_n suppose_v i_o stand_v betwixt_o two_o way_n and_o i_o can_v see_v that_o there_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n more_o in_o this_o than_o in_o that_o i_o may_v in_o that_o respect_n choose_v either_o but_o the_o case_n be_v this_o betwixt_o i_o and_o this_o way_n lie_v some_o promise_n engagement_n covenant_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o i_o cannon_n enter_v this_o way_n but_o i_o must_v go_v over_o the_o head_n of_o it_o no_o such_o thing_n as_o to_o the_o other_o way_n what_o shall_v i_o now_o do_v why_o i_o must_v avoid_v that_o way_n which_o i_o can_v come_v at_o but_o must_v go_v over_o my_o promise_n engagement_n etc._n etc._n to_o reach_v it_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o here_o be_v evil_a viz._n breach_n of_o promise_n in_o my_o very_a motion_n or_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o act_n how_o good_a therefore_o soever_o my_o intention_n may_v be_v yet_o that_o will_v not_o help_v because_o here_o be_v a_o evil_n in_o the_o very_a thing_n itself_o and_o a_o good_a intention_n may_v not_o bias_n i_o to_o a_o evil_a thing_n indeed_o be_v it_o clear_a and_o manifest_a that_o this_o way_n and_o no_o other_o be_v the_o way_n of_o god_n than_o my_o duty_n be_v rather_o than_o to_o balk_v god_n path_n
the_o solution_n of_o the_o case_n from_o this_o general_a rule_n be_v that_o i_o be_o to_o do_v that_o thing_n choose_v that_o way_n which_o tend_v most_o to_o keep_v and_o maintain_v peace_n among_o the_o saint_n now_o that_o we_o may_v not_o fetter_v conscience_n instead_o of_o set_v it_o at_o liberty_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o we_o consider_v how_o far_o this_o rule_n do_v oblige_v we_o and_o how_o far_o not_o for_o general_n rule_v be_v but_o snare_n to_o conscience_n if_o they_o be_v not_o wary_o lay_v down_o with_o their_o due_a caution_n and_o consideration_n to_o bring_v this_o case_n therefore_o into_o the_o light_n i_o shall_v here_o inquire_v into_o what_o that_o be_v i_o be_o to_o dispense_v with_o in_o reference_n unto_o peace_n and_o what_o not_o 1_o what_o i_o be_o not_o to_o to_o dispense_v with_o answ_n i_o be_o not_o to_o dispense_v with_o the_o part_n from_o any_o one_o dram_n of_o clear_a truth_n 1_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o that_o peace_n be_v a_o evil_a peace_n that_o do_v shut_v truth_n out_o of_o door_n if_o peace_n and_o truth_n can_v go_v together_o truth_n be_v to_o be_v prefer_v and_o rather_o to_o be_v choose_v for_o a_o companion_n than_o peace_n and_o there_o be_v good_a reason_n for_o this_o also_o because_o truth_n be_v a_o piece_n of_o god_n nature_n peace_n be_v but_o one_o of_o our_o privilege_n man_n privilege_n must_v rather_o be_v lose_v than_o god_n nature_n suffer_v to_o be_v tread_v underfoot_o if_o therefore_o the_o excellent_a privilege_n of_o peace_n can_v be_v attain_v without_o entrench_v upon_o the_o limit_n of_o the_o more_o excellent_a thing_n truth_n we_o must_v then_o give_v way_n to_o truth_n 2_o i_o be_o not_o for_o peace_n sake_n to_o dispense_v with_o any_o act_n that_o shall_v countenance_v corruption_n in_o a_o brother_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o i_o be_o not_o to_o suffer_v sin_n to_o lie_v upon_o a_o brother_n it_o so_o than_o not_o to_o countenance_v any_o evil_n in_o he_o for_o that_o be_v more_o the_o one_o be_v a_o mere_a negative_a act_n and_o yet_o sinful_a because_o forbid_v the_o other_o a_o positive_a and_o therefore_o more_o sinfult_n if_o therefore_o for_o peace_n sake_n i_o shall_v humour_v a_o brother_n in_o his_o corruption_n as_o pride_n passion_n etc._n etc._n when_o these_o be_v evident_a and_o apparent_a i_o do_v that_o which_o i_o ought_v not_o i_o shall_v rather_o break_v peace_n with_o a_o brother_n than_o contract_n guilt_n on_o my_o own_o head_n 3_o i_o be_o not_o for_o peace_n sake_n to_o dispense_v with_o any_o palpable_a practice_n of_o a_o brother_n another_o soul_n shall_v be_v endanger_v i_o be_o to_o declare_v against_o those_o custom_n or_o practice_n although_o it_o be_v to_o the_o breach_n of_o peace_n 5_o i_o be_o not_o for_o peace_n sake_n to_o dispense_v with_o the_o shake_n of_o a_o weak_a believer_n in_o his_o faith_n the_o reason_n be_v faith_n be_v the_o root_n peace_n be_v but_o the_o branch_n if_o the_o branch_n be_v lop_v off_o and_o the_o root_n remain_v unmaym_v the_o branch_n will_v recover_v again_o but_o if_o the_o root_n be_v maim_v root_n and_o branch_n die_v both_o the_o shake_n of_o the_o root_n be_v therefore_o a_o great_a evil_n than_o the_o lop_n off_o the_o branch_n when_o therefore_o the_o root_n faith_n be_v shake_v i_o be_o to_o relieve_v that_o though_o it_o be_v with_o the_o lop_n off_o the_o branch_n of_o peace_n upon_o this_o account_n paul_n gal._n 2._o do_v open_o oppose_v peter_n when_o he_o by_o comply_v with_o the_o jew_n and_o refuse_v to_o eat_v meat_n with_o the_o gentile_n do_v thereby_o hazard_v the_o weak_a faith_n of_o the_o gentile_n 6_o i_o be_o not_o for_o peace_n sake_n to_o dispense_v with_o a_o design_v spirit_n in_o a_o brother_n the_o reason_n be_v whilst_o a_o brother_n design_n upon_o i_o he_o do_v never_o real_o intend_v peace_n with_o i_o though_o i_o do_v it_o with_o he_o i_o be_o not_o therefore_o for_o peace_n sake_n to_o dispense_v with_o that_o which_o have_v a_o necessary_a tendency_n to_o cut_v i_o short_a of_o my_o end_n when_o paul_n see_v design_v brethren_n come_v in_o upon_o he_o he_o will_v not_o give_v place_n no_o not_o for_o a_o hour_n gal._n 2.11_o 12_o etc._n etc._n 7_o i_o be_o not_o for_o peace_n sake_n to_o dispense_v with_o a_o wilful_a spirit_n in_o a_o brother_n because_o with_o such_o a_o one_o i_o can_v neither_o make_v peace_n nor_o keep_v it_o when_o it_o be_v make_v unless_o in_o every_o thing_n i_o subject_v myself_o to_o his_o will_n now_o it_o be_v better_a to_o stand_v off_o from_o peace_n than_o for_o the_o attain_n and_o keep_v thereof_o to_o put_v myself_o under_o the_o slavery_n of_o another_o will_n for_o the_o loss_n of_o liberty_n to_o myself_o and_o other_o hereby_o on_o the_o one_o hand_n be_v great_a than_o the_o gain_n that_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n will_v redound_v to_o i_o therefore_o paul_n who_o do_v oftentimes_o comply_v when_o he_o can_v general_a view_n of_o it_o suffice_v he_o but_o when_o it_o be_v his_o own_o then_o will_v he_o ponder_v the_o case_n itself_o in_o every_o circumstance_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n grate_v in_o it_o he_o will_v view_v it_o in_o every_o aggravation_n one_o while_o he_o will_v consider_v the_o person_n that_o do_v it_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n which_o may_v aggravate_v it_o therein_o another_o while_o the_o time_n if_o any_o thing_n may_v be_v find_v therein_o to_o aggravate_v another_o while_o he_o will_v be_v call_v to_o remembrance_n other_o injury_n if_o there_o be_v any_o and_o by_o these_o help_n to_o aggravate_v the_o present_a case_n now_o suppose_v the_o case_n itself_o to_o be_v small_a yet_o in_o the_o aggravation_n which_o a_o man_n in_o his_o own_o case_n will_v diligent_o consider_v of_o it_o may_v grow_v to_o be_v great_a but_o this_o a_o man_n will_v not_o do_v in_o another_o case_n as_o he_o that_o do_v another_o work_n to_o make_v quick_a work_n and_o put_v himself_o to_o as_o little_a toil_n as_o may_v be_v will_v post_v and_o slubber_v it_o over_o so_o he_o that_o consider_v another_o case_n 2_o a_o man_n be_v not_o know_v what_o indeed_o and_o in_o truth_n he_o will_v be_v willing_a another_o shall_v do_v by_o he_o we_o think_v we_o know_v our_o heart_n in_o this_o business_n exceed_v well_o but_o when_o it_o come_v to_o the_o trial_n we_o find_v that_o our_o heart_n do_v but_o juggle_v with_o we_o and_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o man_n can_v tell_v what_o he_o will_v be_v willing_a another_o shall_v do_v by_o he_o till_o he_o be_v put_v to_o the_o trial_n nor_o it_o may_v be_v then_o neither_o if_o he_o do_v not_o observe_v his_o own_o heart_n well_o but_o give_v a_o cast_n of_o his_o eye_n upon_o that_o which_o appear_v at_o the_o top_n only_o not_o observe_v the_o secret_a boiling_n and_o working_n that_o may_v lie_v at_o the_o bottom_n and_o that_o no_o man_n know_v what_o that_o thing_n be_v which_o he_o will_v be_v willing_a another_o shall_v do_v by_o he_o will_v be_v clear_a to_o a_o man_n himself_o let_v he_o but_o consider_v this_o it_o may_v be_v some_o time_n past_a there_o be_v this_o or_o that_o thing_n that_o i_o think_v i_o can_v have_v be_v willing_a another_o shall_v have_v do_v by_o i_o and_o it_o may_v be_v since_o something_o have_v fall_v out_o either_o in_o that_o particular_a thing_n or_o it_o may_v be_v in_o a_o less_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v be_v so_o and_o so_o deal_v with_o by_o another_o how_o have_v i_o take_v it_o why_o a_o hundred_o to_o one_o if_o i_o observe_v my_o heart_n not_o in_o all_o thing_n so_o willing_o as_o i_o think_v i_o shall_v and_o indeed_o man_n heart_n be_v such_o that_o if_o it_o will_v but_o speak_v out_o and_o declare_v itself_o natural_o it_o will_v not_o be_v willing_a that_o another_o shall_v do_v that_o thing_n to_o it_o which_o have_v but_o the_o least_o of_o evil_n in_o it_o and_o it_o be_v in_o this_o sense_n that_o christ_n who_o know_v the_o frame_n and_o temper_n of_o the_o heart_n of_o every_o man_n do_v give_v forth_o this_o rule_n intend_v thus_o much_o in_o it_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o do_v to_o another_o that_o thing_n which_o have_v in_o it_o the_o least_o show_n of_o evil_a or_o injury_n for_o our_o heart_n if_o they_o utter_v themselves_o in_o plain_a language_n will_v not_o bear_v with_o it_o that_o any_o such_o thing_n shall_v be_v do_v to_o we_o and_o this_o be_v the_o true_a interpretation_n of_o that_o rule_n which_o be_v lay_v down_o by_o he_o who_o know_v the_o heart_n and_o so_o know_v better_a what_o man_n heart_n can_v bear_v than_o man_n himself_o do_v and_o if_o our_o comment_n upon_o the_o rule_n be_v according_a to_o christ_n sense_n i._n e._n not_o to_o do_v the_o least_o injury_n to_o
