afterwards_o bring_v he_o to_o trouble_v and_o every_o one_o of_o those_o have_v particular_a degree_n like_o legion_n of_o devil_n which_o hold_v the_o creature_n man_n in_o bondage_n while_o a_o man_n enjoy_v his_o lust_n he_o have_v a_o seem_a peace_n within_o himself_o but_o when_o the_o holy_a law_n appear_v to_o discover_v those_o lurk_a devil_n then_o begin_v the_o creature_n torment_v and_o slavery_n and_o this_o let_v i_o see_v what_o the_o enmity_n of_o nature_n be_v between_o god_n and_o i_o the_o enmity_n in_o flesh_n it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o envy_n and_o darkness_n which_o be_v god_n opposite_a as_o darkness_n be_v opposite_a to_o light_v and_o heat_n opposite_a to_o cold_a and_o this_o work_n in_o the_o creature_n man_n to_o maintain_v its_o unclean_a be_v 22._o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o be_n of_o god_n and_o while_o it_o have_v its_o liberty_n sinful_a man_n be_v in_o peace_n but_o when_o god_n please_v that_o the_o declaration_n of_o righteousness_n shall_v take_v hold_n upon_o that_o enmity_n it_o throw_v the_o sinner_n present_o under_o sorrow_n and_o break_v his_o peace_n to_o piece_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o scripture_n in_o my_o experience_n call_v the_o devil_n or_o murderer_n even_o the_o enmity_n that_o be_v in_o my_o nature_n against_o god_n 16._o which_o throw_v i_o under_o the_o flash_n of_o god_n righteous_a law_n which_o be_v enmity_n against_o i_o and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o clear_v chap._n iii_o but_o first_o of_o all_o what_o be_v the_o righteous_a law_n here_o to_o be_v understand_v i_o answer_v it_o be_v not_o the_o word_n of_o the_o letter_n call_v the_o ten_o commandment_n and_o therein_o only_o bind_v up_o 20._o but_o it_o be_v the_o manifestation_n of_o god_n imagination_n of_o the_o flesh_n into_o god_n and_o so_o burn_v up_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o burn_a all_o the_o dross_n of_o the_o flesh_n that_o the_o creature_n may_v appear_v pure_a gold_n as_o thus_o the_o manifestation_n of_o god_n wisdom_n to_o the_o heart_n 4_o be_v direct_o opposite_a to_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o declare_v it_o to_o be_v folly_n which_o inward_a discovery_n trouble_n and_o shame_v the_o man_n though_o none_o see_v and_o know_v it_o but_o himself_o the_o manifestation_n of_o god_n love_n humility_n and_o truth_n be_v direct_o opposite_a to_o the_o carnal_a love_n carnal_a humility_n and_o unrighteousness_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o chastity_n and_o holiness_n of_o god_n let_v a_o man_n see_v his_o uncleanness_n and_o filthy_a lust_n 54._o the_o sincerity_n of_o god_n shine_v forth_o upon_o the_o heart_n discover_v its_o hypocrisy_n and_o so_o of_o all_o other_o manifestation_n of_o god_n be_v dart_v into_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o father_n he_o declare_v the_o creature_n his_o weakness_n and_o that_o every_o way_n he_o come_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n by_o reason_n whereof_o the_o creature_n be_v fill_v with_o horror_n and_o torment_n which_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o man_n see_v not_o but_o stand_v and_o admire_v so_o then_o here_o lie_v the_o mystery_n though_o to_o i_o it_o be_v a_o unfold_a truth_n for_o i_o speak_v what_o i_o know_v the_o serpent_n or_o proud_a flesh_n in_o all_o the_o imagination_n of_o it_o endeavour_v to_o maintain_v its_o corrupt_a self_n and_o to_o swallow_v up_o the_o law_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o pure_a spirit_n but_o the_o law_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o wisdom_n and_o power_n of_o god_n manifest_v in_o all_o the_o branch_n of_o it_o to_o and_o in_o the_o heart_n do_v swallow_v up_o the_o other_o into_o himself_o and_o destroy_v and_o consume_v all_o the_o power_n of_o the_o flesh_n 5._o and_o become_v the_o king_n of_o righteousness_n rule_v and_o dwell_n in_o flesh_n second_o what_o be_v the_o power_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o by_o what_o power_n do_v he_o work_v i_o answer_v this_o be_v not_o a_o power_n distinct_a from_o god_n etc._n as_o i_o have_v think_v that_o the_o devil_n be_v a_o middle_a power_n between_o god_n and_o i_o but_o it_o be_v the_o power_n of_o my_o proud_a flesh_n and_o the_o power_n of_o god_n holy_a law_n close_v together_o the_o one_o fight_v against_o the_o other_o and_o so_o slay_v i_o and_o hold_v i_o under_o bondage_n as_o thus_o god_n bid_v the_o heart_n trust_v in_o he_o by_o inward_a whisper_n the_o heart_n not_o know_v god_n look_v after_o the_o creature_n and_o think_v it_o can_v live_v without_o money_n land_n help_v of_o man_n and_o creature_n this_o be_v the_o devil_n that_o tempt_v well_o the_o pure_a spirit_n or_o holy_a law_n within_o tell_v the_o heart_n he_o must_v be_v strip_v of_o all_o these_o and_o trust_v providence_n for_o subsistence_n the_o heart_n while_o it_o have_v use_n and_o plenty_n of_o all_o these_o say_v yes_o i_o will_v trust_v god_n for_o every_o thing_n yea_o but_o when_o riches_n fail_v friend_n frown_v man_n withdraw_v help_v and_o begin_v to_o speak_v evil_a and_o to_o hate_v and_o the_o heart_n see_v it_o must_v trust_v in_o god_n or_o starve_v and_o yet_o it_o can_v he_o have_v no_o power_n slavish_a fear_n and_o unbelief_n be_v so_o storng_a in_o he_o than_o it_o begin_v to_o sink_v and_o it_o reason_n thus_o i_o have_v no_o riches_n 11._o no_o certain_a dwell_a place_n no_o way_n to_o get_v a_o subsistence_n i_o be_o cross_v in_o all_o 20._o i_o have_v no_o cordial_a friend_n no_o succour_n from_o man_n 9_o if_o any_o seem_v to_o succour_v i_o it_o be_v for_o their_o own_o end_n and_o when_o they_o have_v get_v what_o they_o can_v from_o i_o they_o leave_v i_o and_o turn_v enemy_n so_o that_o the_o heart_n see_v he_o be_v leave_v alone_o and_o in_o this_o low_a estate_n 2._o fear_n and_o distrust_n 2._o two_o strong_a devil_n buffet_v the_o poor_a creature_n and_o squize_n his_o spirit_n flat_a for_o he_o see_v nothing_o fulfil_v to_o he_o he_o feel_v no_o power_n from_o god_n and_o his_o spirit_n droop_v so_o that_o here_o be_v depth_n of_o misery_n in_o the_o heart_n apprehension_n it_o be_v hedge_v in_o with_o sorrow_n on_o every_o side_n let_v he_o look_v to_o man_n and_o creature_n and_o there_o be_v no_o help_n all_o have_v forsake_v he_o and_o stand_v aloof_o off_o let_v he_o look_v within_o himself_o and_o he_o see_v nothing_o but_o slavish_a fear_n and_o unbelief_n question_v the_o truth_n and_o power_n of_o god_n how_o can_v such_o thing_n be_v and_o so_o beat_v he_o off_o from_o quiet_a close_n with_o god_n but_o labour_v to_o make_v a_o breach_n between_o god_n and_o himself_o 6._o well_o thy_o spirit_n
for_o time_n be_v come_v that_o every_o one_o must_v be_v teach_v of_o god_n and_o this_o trouble_v he_o very_o much_o well_o all_o these_o trouble_n and_o such_o like_a proceed_v from_o the_o shine_n forth_o of_o the_o righteous_a law_n upon_o the_o proud_a heart_n and_o he_o can_v bear_v it_o because_o he_o seek_v himself_o more_o than_o god_n the_o unbelief_n of_o the_o heart_n live_v by_o sense_n upon_o the_o creature_n the_o law_n of_o god_n tell_v the_o heart_n he_o must_v trust_v god_n and_o not_o man_n and_o though_o all_o sense_n fail_v he_o from_o man_n and_o creature_n yet_o to_o wait_v upon_o god_n but_o this_o trouble_v he_o he_o can_v wait_v and_o if_o he_o do_v wait_v he_o question_v whether_o he_o shall_v have_v such_o thing_n he_o be_v bid_v to_o wait_v for_o and_o the_o poor_a heart_n lie_v under_o great_a toss_n again_o in_o his_o course_n of_o trade_v in_o the_o world_n if_o he_o ask_v sometime_o too_o little_a or_o sometime_o too_o much_o for_o his_o ware_n than_o he_o be_v trouble_v and_o do_v what_o he_o can_v his_o heart_n be_v trouble_v because_o he_o think_v he_o may_v have_v do_v better_o when_o business_n go_v cross_a to_o his_o mind_n he_o be_v trouble_v whether_o it_o be_v fair_a weather_n or_o fowl_n if_o it_o be_v not_o just_a to_o his_o mind_n he_o be_v trouble_v then_o appear_v pride_n covetousness_n frowardness_n uncleaness_n spring_v up_o in_o his_o heart_n and_o these_o trouble_v he_o if_o he_o can_v speak_v for_o god_n when_o other_o speak_v against_o he_o as_o he_o think_v than_o he_o be_v trouble_v if_o he_o do_v speak_v of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n than_o his_o heart_n tell_v he_o he_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n or_o self-lover_n and_o then_o he_o be_v trouble_v so_o that_o there_o arise_v not_o a_o thought_n in_o his_o heart_n but_o there_o be_v some_o fret_n or_o trouble_v tie_v to_o it_o and_o what_o be_v all_o these_o and_o such_o like_a but_o even_o a_o legion_n of_o devil_n or_o troubler_n that_o hold_v the_o creature_n under_o bondage_n and_o torment_v he_o thus_o in_o hell_n day_n and_o night_n i_o call_v it_o a_o hell_n for_o it_o be_v a_o condition_n of_o darkness_n below_o the_o life_n comfort_n and_o peace_n of_o god_n all_o these_o be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o righteous_a law_n for_o the_o creature_n strive_v to_o be_v wise_a and_o the_o law_n prove_v he_o a_o fool_n he_o will_v fain_o be_v righteous_a and_o the_o light_n of_o the_o law_n show_v he_o he_o be_v a_o wicked_a hypocrite_n he_o will_v fain_o have_v faith_n and_o holiness_n in_o he_o and_o the_o law_n show_v he_o he_o be_v a_o unbelieving_a sinner_n he_o will_v fain_o enjoy_v the_o peace_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o enjoy_v himself_o too_o the_o law_n tell_v he_o he_o must_v deny_v himself_o and_o take_v up_o his_o cross_n daily_o if_o he_o will_v enjoy_v god_n he_o will_v fain_o be_v count_v some_o body_n for_o wisdom_n faith_n prayer_n preach_v the_o law_n tell_v he_o all_o be_v as_o good_a as_o nothing_o because_o he_o go_v forth_o in_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o the_o power_n of_o the_o father_n be_v absent_a and_o thus_o the_o law_n be_v that_o flame_a sword_n which_o turn_v every_o way_n upon_o the_o sinner_n and_o scorch_v the_o poor_a imprison_a soul_n in_o every_o thought_n of_o his_o heart_n 18._o burn_v up_o his_o pride_n and_o self-conceit_n so_o that_o the_o righteous_a law_n reign_v like_o a_o tyrant_n in_o 2._o and_o over_o the_o poor_a prisoner_n and_o while_o the_o soul_n be_v thus_o torment_v by_o the_o dispensation_n of_o wrath_n the_o envious_a spirit_n of_o darkness_n that_o rule_v in_o other_o man_n delight_n to_o see_v this_o poor_a creature_n thus_o under_o bondage_n and_o so_o cast_v jeer_n slander_n reproach_n and_o hard_a usage_n upon_o he_o envy_n rejoice_v in_o other_o misery_n even_o as_o love_n rejoice_v in_o the_o liberty_n and_o life_n of_o other_o but_o poor_a soul_n know_v this_o that_o god_n be_v burn_v up_o thy_o dross_n and_o ere_o long_o will_v set_v thou_o at_o liberty_n and_o the_o fire_n of_o love_n that_o burn_v in_o thou_o will_v break_v forth_o to_o thy_o comfort_n and_o then_o he_o will_v give_v thou_o power_n to_o rejoice_v over_o the_o devil_n 13._o and_o to_o set_v thy_o foot_n upon_o his_o neck_n as_o a_o conquer_a slave_n even_o as_o he_o make_v thou_o his_o slave_n now_o then_o second_o this_o same_o imprison_a creature_n that_o lie_v under_o the_o law_n be_v as_o yet_o not_o set_v free_a by_o the_o son_n meet_v with_o many_o trouble_n without_o and_o these_o be_v but_o dispensation_n of_o wrath_n as_o the_o other_o be_v likewise_o as_o sickness_n frown_v of_o friend_n hatred_n of_o man_n loss_n of_o his_o estate_n by_o fire_n water_n be_v cheat_v by_o false_a spirit_a man_n death_n of_o his_o cattle_n or_o many_o such_o like_a casualty_n whereby_o he_o become_v poor_a in_o the_o world_n and_o meet_v with_o many_o strait_n as_o hard_a language_n hungry_a belly_n to_o be_v despise_v imprison_a and_o abundance_n of_o such_o provocation_n in_o the_o world_n and_o it_o may_v be_v meet_v with_o fearful_a apparition_n in_o the_o night_n or_o day_n that_o terrify_v he_o as_o it_o be_v job_n case_n he_o be_v fill_v with_o terror_n in_o the_o night_n sometime_o these_o trouble_n lie_v within_o a_o man_n spirit_n in_o grief_n and_o sadpressure_n and_o inward_a burn_n of_o trouble_n and_o torment_n which_o no_o man_n be_v sensible_a of_o but_o himself_o and_o sometime_o it_o break_v forth_o in_o bitter_a word_n and_o speech_n through_o oppression_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o the_o disturbance_n of_o other_o and_o this_o be_v call_v madness_n or_o distraction_n which_o grow_v upon_o a_o man_n when_o the_o pure_a law_n do_v cross_v his_o carnal_a imagination_n wilful_a will_n pride_n covetous_a or_o lustful_a desire_n than_o do_v the_o distemper_n of_o his_o trouble_a spirit_n break_v out_o but_o when_o christ_n come_v and_o set_v he_o free_a etc._n than_o he_o come_v to_o see_v that_o whatsoever_o do_v befall_v he_o must_v befall_v he_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o the_o father_n for_o the_o burn_n up_o of_o his_o dross_n and_o pride_n of_o flesh_n and_o shall_v be_v
