CXXI 1 The great safety of the godly who put their trust in Gods protection ¶ A song of degrees ‖ Or Shall I lift up mine eyes to the bills whence should my holy come I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help 2 * Ps 124.8 My help cometh from the LORD which made heaven and earth 3 He will not suffer thy â—out to be moved he that keepeth thee will not slumber 4 Behold he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep 5 The LORD is thy keeper the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day nor the moon by night 7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil he shall preserve thy soul 8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth and even for evermore PSAL. CXXII 1 David professeth his joy for the church 6 and prayeth for the peace thereof ¶ A song of degrees of David I Was glad when they said unto me Let us go into the house of the LORD 2 Our feet shall stand within thy gates O Jerusalem 3 Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together 4 Whither the tribes go up the tribes of the LORD unto the testimony of Israel to give thanks unto the name of the LORD 5 For there †Heb. 〈◊〉 sit are set thrones of judgement the thrones of the house of David 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem they shall prosper that love thee 7 Peace be within thy walls and prosperity within thy palaces 8 For my brethren and companions sakes I will now say Peace be within thee 9 Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good PSAL. CXXIII 1 The godly profess their confidence in God 3 and pray to be delivered from contempt ¶ A song of degrees UNto thee lift I up mine eyes O thou that dwellest in the heavens 2 Behold as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God until that he have mercy upon us 3 Have mercy upon us O LORD have mercy upon us for we are exceedingly filled with contempt 4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease and with the contempt of the proud PSAL. CXXIV The church blesseth God for a miraculous deliverance ¶ A song of degrees of David IF it had not been the LORD who was on our side now may Israel say 2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side when men rose up against us 3 Then they had swallowed us up quick when their wrath was kindled against us 4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us the stream had gone over our soul 5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul 6 Blessed be the LORD who hath not given us as

II. 1 David by Gods direction with his company goeth up to Hebron where he is made king of Judah 5 He commendeth them of Jabesh-gilead for their kindness to Saul 8 Abner maketh Ish-bosheth king of Israel 12 A mortal skirmish between twelve of Abners and twelve of Joabs men 18 Asahel is slain 25 At Abners motion Joab soundeth a retreat 32 Asahels burial ANd it came to pass after this that David enquired of the LORD saying Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah And the LORD said unto him Go up And David said Whither shall I go up And he said Unto Hebron 2 So David went up thither and his two wives also Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail Nabals wife the Carmelite 3 And his men that were with him did David bring up every man with his houshold and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron 4 * 1 Mac. 1.57 And the men of Judah came and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah and they told David saying That * 1 Sam. 31.13 the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul 5 ¶ And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead and said unto them Blessed be ye of the LORD that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord even unto Saul and have buried him 6 And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you and I also will requite you this kindness because ye have done this thing 7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthned and †Heb. be ye the sons of valour be ye valiant for your master Saul is dead and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them 8 ¶ But Abner the son of Ner captain of †Heb. the host which was Sauls Sauls host took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim 9 And he made him king over Gilead and over the Ashurites and over Jezreel and over Ephraim and over Benjamin and over all Israel 10 Ish-bosheth Sauls son was fourty years old when he began to reign over Israel and reigned two years but the house of Judah followed David 11 And the †Heb. number of days time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six moneths 12 ¶ And Abner the son of Ner and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon 13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah and the servants of David went out and met †Heb. them together together by the pool of Gibeon and they sat down the one on the one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool 14 And Abner said to Joab Let the young men now arise and play before us And Joab said Let them arise 15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and twelve of the servants of David 16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head and thrust his sword in his fellows side so they fell down together wherefore that place was called ‖ That is The field of strong men Helkath-hazzurim which is in Gibeon 17 And there was a very sore battel that day and Abner was beaten and the men of Israel before the servants of David 18 ¶ And there were three sons of Zeruiah there Joab and Abishai and Asahel and Asahel was as
