so_o do_v our_o saviour_n frame_v his_o answer_n as_o to_o declare_v the_o worship_n of_o the_o jew_n preferable_a to_o that_o of_o the_o samaritan_n and_o consequent_o jerusalem_n to_o mount_n gerizim_n but_o add_v that_o the_o whole_a question_n will_v henceforth_o cease_v while_o both_o their_o religion_n be_v to_o be_v abolish_v the_o one_o as_o false_a the_o other_o as_o imperfect_a the_o samaritan_n false_a because_o mix_v with_o idolatry_n wherefore_o our_o saviour_n say_v you_o worship_v you_o know_v not_o what_o v._o 22._o the_o jew_n though_o it_o must_v be_v allow_v true_a because_o he_o add_v we_o worship_v what_o we_o know_v yet_o to_o be_v abolish_v because_o weak_a and_o imperfect_a neither_o in_o this_o mountain_n shall_v you_o worship_n because_o idolatry_n shall_v cease_v as_o the_o prophet_n foretell_v and_o the_o lord_n alone_o shall_v he_o exalt_v in_o that_o day_n 2.18_o isa_n 2.18_o and_o the_o idol_n he_o shall_v utter_o abolish_v nor_o in_o jerusalem_n because_o sacrifice_n and_o oblation_n he_o will_v no_o long_o accept_v but_o a_o three_o and_o perfect_a worship_n shall_v be_v establish_v for_o the_o hour_n come_v and_o now_o be_v when_o the_o true_a worshipper_n shall_v worship_v the_o father_n in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n for_o the_o father_n seek_v such_o to_o worship_v he_o v._o 23._o in_o which_o answer_n of_o our_o bless_a saviour_n the_o deficiency_n of_o both_o the_o former_a religion_n and_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o which_o be_v to_o succeed_v be_v plain_o set_v forth_o for_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o samaritan_n be_v not_o in_o truth_n but_o abound_v with_o error_n and_o ignorance_n that_o of_o the_o jew_n be_v not_o in_o spirit_n but_o consist_v in_o bodily_a observance_n and_o outward_a ceremony_n which_o be_v but_o shadow_n of_o thing_n to_o come_v and_o it_o be_v only_o the_o christian_n that_o can_v henceforth_o be_v true_a worshipper_n whilst_o their_o religion_n alone_o be_v endue_v with_o what_o the_o other_o be_v deficient_a in_o viz._n spirit_n and_o truth_n nor_o can_v any_o other_o religion_n than_o this_o be_v proper_a to_o be_v establish_v no_o other_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o true_a notion_n of_o a_o god_n and_o this_o in_o the_o text_n be_v give_v as_o the_o fundamental_a reason_n why_o the_o other_o be_v abolish_v and_o this_o introduce_v god_n be_v a_o spirit_n etc._n etc._n and_o that_o the_o christian_a religion_n be_v thus_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o show_v by_o declare_v what_o be_v here_o require_v of_o we_o i._o by_o worship_v in_o spirit_n and_o ii_o in_o truth_n and_o by_o the_o way_n shall_v take_v notice_n of_o such_o as_o deviate_v from_o this_o worship_n which_o i_o desire_v may_v serve_v as_o a_o application_n of_o the_o discourse_n since_o it_o be_v all_o which_o i_o fear_v your_o patience_n will_v permit_v i_o to_o make_v and_o i._o i_o be_o to_o show_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o worship_v god_n in_o spirit_n 1._o then_o do_v we_o worship_v he_o in_o spirit_n when_o we_o be_v possess_v with_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a sense_n of_o his_o divine_a majesty_n power_n and_o rule_n over_o we_o humble_o acknowledge_v his_o unspeakable_a goodness_n so_o adore_v his_o infinite_a wisdom_n which_o search_v our_o heart_n that_o we_o in_o all_o thing_n submit_v to_o his_o alwise_a will_n when_o we_o love_v he_o with_o all_o our_o heart_n and_o all_o our_o soul_n and_o yet_o fear_v and_o reverence_v he_o as_o a_o father_n and_o with_o the_o great_a cheerfulness_n obey_v whatsoever_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o command_v we_o when_o we_o not_o only_o give_v up_o our_o soul_n pure_a and_o spotless_a but_o keep_v our_o body_n too_o fit_a temple_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o thus_o join_v offer_v up_o ourselves_o one_o reasonable_a service_n for_o when_o we_o have_v once_o this_o true_a and_o awful_a notion_n of_o the_o almighty_a we_o must_v and_o shall_v exert_v ourselves_o in_o act_n of_o piety_n and_o public_a testimony_n of_o devotion_n express_v our_o sense_n of_o his_o power_n and_o rule_n by_o our_o daily_a supplication_n our_o acknowledgement_n of_o his_o goodness_n by_o our_o continual_a praise_n our_o love_n by_o our_o charity_n to_o our_o neighbour_n and_o zeal_n for_o his_o worship_n and_o service_n our_o fear_n by_o our_o abstain_v from_o the_o least_o appearance_n of_o evil_a lest_o we_o offend_v so_o gracious_a a_o father_n and_o all_o this_o with_o humility_n and_o reverence_n decency_n and_o order_n with_o obedience_n to_o authority_n and_o respect_n to_o those_o who_o he_o have_v set_v over_o we_o these_o being_n most_o certain_a and_o spiritual_a duty_n nay_o the_o only_a thing_n wherein_o we_o be_v capable_a of_o testify_v that_o we_o real_o do_v worship_n he_o in_o spirit_n and_o once_o come_v up_o to_o these_o just_a and_o awful_a thought_n of_o the_o divine_a majesty_n which_o produce_v such_o true_a act_n of_o devotion_n and_o piety_n how_o agreeable_a to_o his_o nature_n must_v be_v this_o our_o sacrifice_n how_o much_o beyond_o whatever_o the_o policy_n of_o the_o wise_a heathen_a can_v invent_v nay_o even_o what_o he_o himself_o institute_v in_o the_o jewish_a religion_n god_n be_v a_o spirit_n that_o be_v a_o be_v incorporeal_a and_o immaterial_a his_o worship_n therefore_o aught_o to_o be_v like_o himself_o refine_a and_o spiritual_a and_o to_o deduce_v its_o source_n from_o the_o reason_n and_o soul_n of_o man_n not_o to_o consist_v bare_o in_o outward_a act_n and_o thing_n mere_o corporeal_a it_o be_v confess_v god_n have_v permit_v nay_o command_v such_o a_o worship_n under_o the_o old_a law_n but_o this_o be_v only_o temporary_a and_o fit_v for_o a_o people_n carnal_a and_o stiffnecked_a but_o now_o the_o fullness_n of_o time_n be_v come_v it_o no_o long_o suit_v the_o divine_a majesty_n he_o therefore_o command_v a_o worship_n more_o real_a and_o divine_a if_o therefore_o our_o action_n do_v not_o proceed_v from_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n that_o be_v from_o a_o lively_a faith_n fervent_a love_n and_o sincere_a principle_n of_o holiness_n they_o can_v be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n nor_o be_v this_o our_o worship_n agreeable_a to_o his_o nature_n but_o if_o they_o take_v their_o rise_n from_o the_o heart_n then_o be_v they_o a_o spiritual_a worship_n for_o thus_o be_v they_o spiritual_a in_o their_o original_a source_n and_o cause_n and_o bear_v some_o proportion_n even_o with_o the_o almighty_a himself_o who_o be_v a_o spirit_n and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o worship_v in_o spirit_n how_o gross_o then_o do_v they_o err_v who_o will_v make_v all_o religion_n to_o consist_v in_o notion_n and_o talk_n and_o frame_v to_o themselves_o a_o worship_n that_o shall_v have_v nothing_o of_o reality_n in_o it_o but_o at_o once_o mock_v both_o god_n and_o man_n these_o be_v they_o that_o be_v above_o ordinance_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o rule_n guide_v by_o fancy_n and_o a_o frantic_a zeal_n which_o they_o put_v on_o to_o deceive_v the_o giddy_a multitude_n with_o a_o noise_n of_o holiness_n who_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o vent_v and_o boast_v their_o notion_n of_o the_o power_n and_o excellency_n of_o faith_n but_o never_o take_v care_n to_o show_v it_o by_o their_o work_n nay_o esteem_v the_o press_n of_o they_o as_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n nothing_o less_o than_o superstition_n and_o popery_n that_o will_v talk_v of_o love_n to_o god_n and_o familiarity_n with_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n and_o yet_o forget_v their_o obedience_n to_o the_o magistrate_n who_o he_o have_v set_v over_o they_o and_o hate_v backbite_v and_o slander_v their_o neighbour_n that_o pretend_v to_o the_o great_a zeal_n for_o god_n glory_n yet_o be_v so_o far_o from_o abhor_v sacrilege_n that_o it_o be_v one_o great_a mark_n of_o their_o godliness_n bless_a god_n if_o these_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o spiritual_a worship_n we_o have_v change_v for_o the_o worse_o and_o be_v much_o far_o from_o heaven_n than_o the_o jew_n or_o samaritan_n other_o there_o be_v that_o go_v not_o so_o far_o yet_o urge_v this_o text_n against_o all_o manner_n of_o ceremony_n and_o prescribe_v form_n of_o devotion_n be_v we_o say_v they_o to_o worship_v he_o in_o spirit_n what_o mean_v then_o this_o show_n and_o outward_a pomp_n this_o rubric_n and_o these_o form_n shall_v we_o again_o be_v bind_v up_o with_o jewish_a slavery_n be_v we_o not_o promise_v the_o assistance_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o shall_v christ_n die_v in_o vain_a to_o free_v we_o we_o willing_o confess_v that_o the_o worship_n under_o the_o gospel_n be_v more_o refine_a and_o spiritual_a than_o that_o under_o the_o law_n but_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v whole_o so_o debar_v of_o all_o outward_a ceremony_n we_o affirm_v to_o be_v against_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o age_n nay_o
