this_o modest_a question_n love_v thou_o i_o more_o than_o these_o the_o good_a apostle_n have_v now_o partly_o from_o the_o late_a experiment_n of_o his_o own_o frailty_n and_o partly_o from_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o lord_n question_v learn_v more_o humility_n and_o modesty_n return_v such_o a_o answer_n as_o be_v short_a not_o only_o of_o his_o former_a profession_n but_o even_o of_o the_o question_n too_o he_o do_v not_o reply_n lord_n thou_o know_v that_o i_o love_v thou_o more_o than_o these_o no_o he_o dare_v not_o venture_v any_o more_o so_o much_o as_o to_o determine_v any_o thing_n concern_v the_o measure_n of_o his_o love_n but_o be_v content_v bare_o to_o aver_v the_o truth_n and_o sincerity_n of_o it_o and_o for_o this_o he_o fear_v not_o to_o appeal_v at_o last_o to_o the_o divine_a omniscience_n lord_n thou_o know_v all_o thing_n thou_o know_v that_o i_o love_v thou_o our_o lord_n take_v the_o answer_n and_o do_v not_o at_o all_o question_n the_o truth_n and_o sincerity_n of_o it_o only_o he_o give_v he_o a_o test_n whereby_o it_o may_v be_v try_v and_o justify_v both_o before_o god_n himself_o and_o the_o world_n by_o subjoin_v this_o illative_a command_n feed_v my_o lamb_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o text_n or_o as_o in_o the_o two_o follow_a verse_n feed_v my_o sheep_n this_o whole_a intercourse_n between_o our_o lord_n and_o st._n peter_n may_v i_o conceive_v as_o to_o the_o full_a stress_n and_o scope_n of_o it_o fit_o be_v reduce_v to_o this_o short_a hypothetical_n sceme_v of_o speech_n if_o thou_o love_v i_o feed_v my_o sheep_n like_o that_o of_o our_o saviour_n upon_o another_o occasion_n to_o his_o disciple_n in_o common_a if_o you_o love_v i_o keep_v my_o commandment_n this_o under_o a_o short_a view_n take_v in_o the_o full_a force_n of_o the_o word_n and_o i_o shall_v according_o discourse_v upon_o they_o as_o if_o they_o have_v stand_v in_o this_o posture_n hence_o than_o i_o shall_v take_v occasion_n to_o consider_v these_o three_o thing_n as_o natural_o arise_v from_o the_o word_n and_o as_o no_o less_o pertinent_a to_o our_o present_n concern_v first_o the_o great_a love_n of_o our_o lord_n christ_n to_o his_o church_n which_o he_o here_o call_v his_o lamb_n and_o his_o sheep_n which_o he_o here_o command_v st._n peter_n as_o he_o love_v he_o to_o feed_v and_o which_o last_o he_o will_v not_o absolute_o and_o final_o commit_v to_o his_o charge_n till_o after_o three_o distinct_a inquiry_n whether_o he_o true_o love_v he_o second_o i_o shall_v consider_v the_o command_n here_o give_v and_o show_v the_o great_a obligation_n that_o lie_v upon_o all_o spiritual_a pastor_n and_o guide_n of_o soul_n to_o feed_v this_o flock_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v so_o dear_o belove_v by_o he_o three_o i_o shall_v consider_v the_o connexion_n and_o dependence_n that_o be_v between_o the_o practice_n of_o this_o command_n and_o the_o love_n of_o christ._n if_o thou_o love_v i_o feed_v my_o sheep_n last_o i_o shall_v close_v all_o with_o a_o earnest_a exhortation_n to_o the_o conscientious_a practice_n of_o the_o duty_n enjoin_v the_o first_o thing_n i_o shall_v consider_v be_v the_o great_a love_n of_o christ_n to_o his_o church_n and_o certain_o if_o there_o be_v any_o secret_n in_o religion_n fit_a for_o angel_n to_o contemplate_v and_o too_o high_a for_o they_o to_o comprehend_v if_o there_o be_v any_o love_n that_o have_v breadth_n and_o length_n and_o depth_n
