us._n and_o these_o be_v meritorious_a and_o effectual_a of_o themselves_o such_o be_v 1._o the_o power_n of_o christ_n dwell_v in_o us._n 1._o col._n 19_o which_o be_v both_o the_o meritorious_a work_n as_o may_v any_o way_n further_o our_o spiritual_a growth_n 1._o cor._n 3._o more_o particular_o these_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v special_a instrumental_a cause_n of_o our_o growth_n in_o grace_n 1_o a_o save_a knowledge_n and_o that_o 1._o of_o our_o particular_a estate_n and_o this_o twofold_a 1._o both_o of_o the_o power_n of_o corruption_n that_o remain_v and_o cleave_v unto_o up_o the_o good_a motion_n as_o the_o ground_n thereof_o and_o enable_v to_o put_v the_o motion_n into_o practice_n &_o give_v comfort_n in_o the_o practice_n by_o the_o acceptance_n thereof_o in_o christ_n above_o the_o worth_n thereof_o and_o hence_o arise_v these_o comfortable_a rule_n to_o meet_v with_o diverse_a tentation_n incident_a to_o the_o new_a birth_n both_o for_o our_o trial_n and_o comfort_n therein_o that_o whereas_o we_o find_v ourselves_o tho_o true_o convert_v yet_o sometime_o to_o be_v unapt_a to_o holy_a duty_n find_v little_a comfort_n in_o they_o less_o power_n to_o resist_v corruption_n and_o so_o may_v think_v the_o work_n to_o be_v not_o only_o interrupt_v but_o quite_o undo_v yet_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v a_o creation_n not_o only_o in_o the_o beginning_n but_o in_o the_o proceed_n too_o psal_n 51.10_o though_o we_o may_v despair_v in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o yet_o must_v we_o now_o by_o faith_n still_o rely_v on_o our_o god_n yet_o do_v not_o these_o faculty_n execute_v their_o several_a operation_n at_o the_o first_o by_o reason_n that_o the_o organ_n of_o those_o faculty_n be_v either_o yet_o not_o create_v or_o not_o fit_v for_o use_v whence_o follow_v these_o conclusion_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o growth_n and_o comfort_n therein_o 1._o for_o trial_n that_o see_v the_o faculty_n must_v lead_v to_o and_o enlive_v the_o action_n and_o of_o all_o faculty_n though_o the_o will_v be_v predominate_a yet_o the_o understanding_n must_v begin_v to_o discern_v what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v or_o undo_v and_o knowledge_n must_v inform_v and_o bind_v the_o conscience_n to_o the_o do_v thereof_o and_o so_o the_o will_v consequent_o be_v attempt_v and_o subdue_v to_o the_o performance_n or_o leave_v the_o first_o in_o every_o part_n as_o be_v quicken_v by_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o whole_a in_o the_o whole_a and_o whole_a in_o every_o part_n enliving_a and_o so_o increase_a the_o same_o and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o new_a creature_n every_o part_n and_o faculty_n be_v lively_o quicken_v by_o grace_n at_o first_o though_o it_o execute_v not_o present_o the_o operation_n thereof_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o defect_n of_o the_o instrument_n and_o so_o every_o part_n grow_v up_o together_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n thereof_o as_o we_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n so_o in_o conscience_n of_o obedience_n so_o in_o humility_n for_o it_o imperfection_n so_o in_o patience_n etc._n etc._n whence_o arise_v these_o comfortable_a rule_n both_o for_o the_o trial_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n 1_o for_o trial_n that_o if_o we_o find_v a_o genenerall_n affect_v of_o every_o part_n as_o well_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o will_n as_o a_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n for_o the_o same_o as_o well_o a_o love_n unto_o goodness_n as_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n as_o well_o a_o purpose_n of_o heart_n to_o leave_v it_o and_o do_v the_o contrary_a as_o a_o sight_n of_o it_o in_o the_o understanding_n and_o then_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n see_v that_o the_o hypocrite_n may_v by_o the_o power_n of_o conscience_n natural_o especial_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n discern_v sin_n and_o so_o be_v conumce_v of_o it_o but_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o renew_a by_o grace_n neither_o can_v he_o hate_v it_o unfeigned_o or_o be_v willing_a to_o part_v with_o it_o upon_o the_o best_a term_n neither_o be_v able_a in_o any_o measure_n to_o forsake_v the_o same_o upon_o the_o true_a ground_n in_o obedience_n and_o love_n unto_o god_n but_o only_o upon_o by-respect_n out_o of_o love_n to_o himself_o he_o may_v so_o leave_v some_o sin_n as_o to_o enchange_v it_o for_o a_o more_o sweet_a and_o profitable_a or_o else_o he_o must_v leave_v it_o because_o ability_n and_o opportunity_n serve_v not_o thereto_o or_o else_o he_o leave_v with_o condition_n to_o resume_v it_o again_o upon_o a_o better_a opportunity_n and_o advantage_n and_o so_o as_o he_o will_v no_o good_a at_o all_o so_o if_o he_o do_v any_o it_o be_v not_o from_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n but_o from_o outward_a respect_n neither_o do_v he_o continue_v therein_o otherwise_o then_o may_v serve_v his_o carnal_a end_n make_v hereby_o amends_n for_o some_o grievous_a sin_n or_o seek_v to_o further_a and_o cloak_n diverse_a tentation_n which_o be_v incident_a hereto_o as_o first_o whereas_o it_o much_o distract_v the_o saint_n that_o because_o they_o can_v sensible_o discern_v for_o the_o present_a the_o maâ—ner_n of_o their_o spiritual_a growth_n no_o more_o than_o they_o can_v their_o natural_a therefore_o they_o question_v ofttimes_o the_o truth_n thereof_o if_o now_o they_o shall_v know_v that_o in_o the_o discern_a thereof_o they_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n this_o distraction_n will_v easy_o be_v remedy_v for_o now_o see_v that_o may_v be_v believe_v by_o faith_n which_o be_v not_o apprehend_v nay_o be_v contrary_a to_o sense_n therefore_o though_o our_o grow_a be_v not_o discernible_a to_o sense_n nay_o sense_n apprehend_v somewhat_o that_o may_v be_v contrary_a to_o our_o growth_n therefore_o notwithstanding_o these_o we_o may_v still_o grow_v in_o grace_n nay_o see_v we_o grow_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n therefore_o be_v this_o unto_o we_o a_o true_a evidence_n that_o we_o do_v grow_v indeed_o when_o we_o do_v not_o sensible_o discern_v it_o for_o the_o present_a when_o we_o find_v somewhat_o in_o appearance_n &_o opposition_n contrary_a thereto_o if_o we_o yield_v not_o hereunto_o but_o rather_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o our_o god_n bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n and_o show_v his_o that_o we_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o so_o do_v hereby_o fight_v the_o good_a fight_n of_o faith_n 2._o whereas_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n be_v not_o only_o to_o have_v some_o feel_n of_o what_o we_o believe_v by_o the_o seal_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o general_a as_o that_o thereby_o we_o be_v persuade_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n in_o we_o but_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n be_v further_a to_o rely_v upon_o the_o free_a power_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n above_o what_o present_o we_o feel_v 18._o rom._n 4.17_o 18._o lest_o our_o present_a feeling_n cause_v spiritual_a pride_n and_o so_o security_n and_o so_o hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o remissness_n in_o well-doing_n do_v thereby_o hinder_v our_o spiritual_a growth_n therefore_o howsoever_o we_o may_v have_v some_o such_o presumption_n and_o keep_v in_o a_o continual_a hunger_n after_o the_o best_a grace_n and_o this_o meet_v with_o a_o second_o tentation_n arise_v from_o present_a feel_n of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n teach_v we_o to_o avoid_v spiritual_a pride_n presumption_n etc._n etc._n by_o live_v still_o by_o faith_n above_o and_o beyond_o all_o present_a feel_n and_o second_o though_o in_o our_o best_a performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n we_o find_v not_o that_o present_a answer_n as_o we_o expect_v but_o rather_o meet_v with_o what_o be_v contrary_a thereunto_o yet_o if_o now_o we_o can_v live_v by_o faith_n we_o shall_v be_v full_o satisfy_v for_o faith_n will_v now_o teach_v we_o to_o perform_v obedience_n unto_o god_n simple_o because_o he_o command_v and_o not_o so_o much_o for_o what_o be_v promise_v and_o so_o to_o measure_v our_o spiritual_a growth_n rather_o by_o increase_n of_o our_o obedience_n then_o return_v of_o the_o issue_n thereof_o yea_o though_o we_o have_v not_o our_o particular_a answer_n for_o the_o present_a yet_o the_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n will_v bring_v forth_o patience_n 1.3_o jam._n 1.3_o and_o patience_n will_v perfect_v the_o work_n by_o perseverance_n therein_o yea_o faith_n 11.1_o heb._n 11.1_o which_o be_v of_o thing_n not_o see_v will_v enable_v we_o to_o see_v a_o far_o off_o into_o that_o great_a reward_n 11.26_o heb._n 11.26_o which_o will_v sufficient_o supply_v and_o recompense_v all_o our_o present_a disappointment_n and_o waiting_n nay_o though_o we_o meet_v with_o contrary_a blast_n and_o issue_n to_o our_o desire_n yet_o faith_n that_o purify_v the_o heart_n 15.9_o act_n 15.9_o will_v reveal_v unto_o we_o some_o inward_a cause_n of_o these_o contrary_a effect_n and_o so_o will_v enable_v we_o to_o purge_v out_o also_o the_o same_o that_o this_o be_v best_a for_o we_o though_o for_o the_o present_a we_o can_v discern_v it_o through_o impatience_n pride_n or_o such_o like_a yea_o the_o power_n of_o faith_n will_v dispel_v these_o fog_n and_o make_v manifest_a to_o the_o advise_a spirit_n what_o may_v be_v best_a for_o it_o yea_o herein_o also_o appear_v the_o wonderful_a virtue_n of_o faith_n that_o it_o will_v keep_v the_o work_n a_o foot_n more_o earnest_o the_o more_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v cross_v &_o continue_v the_o same_o more_o eager_o in_o hope_n at_o length_n to_o prevail_v and_o never_o give_v over_o till_o it_o have_v overcome_v the_o lord_n oh_o that_o we_o can_v wise_o consider_v thereof_o indeed_o we_o have_v a_o promise_n that_o if_o we_o believe_v we_o shall_v obtain_v whatsoever_o we_o ask_v so_o that_o it_o may_v seem_v that_o if_o we_o do_v not_o obtain_v we_o do_v not_o believe_v but_o if_o we_o remember_v withal_o that_o we_o must_v ask_v according_a to_o god_n undoubted_o obtain_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o if_o not_o the_o particular_a for_o the_o present_a yet_o what_o meanwhile_o shall_v be_v better_o and_o the_o particular_a if_o necessary_a in_o the_o time_n most_o convenient_a only_o let_v we_o pray_v in_o faith_n 1.6_o jam._n 1.6_o and_o so_o wait_v with_o patience_n apprehend_v he_o which_o be_v invisible_a and_o in_o he_o the_o glory_n to_o be_v reveal_v and_o so_o shall_v we_o obtain_v whatsoever_o may_v further_o thereunto_o in_o that_o time_n and_o manner_n and_o measure_n as_o may_v be_v most_o available_a to_o conclude_v this_o our_o weakness_n and_o therein_o we_o shall_v discern_v the_o necessity_n and_o excellency_n 〈◊〉_d the_o golden_a rule_n that_o we_o must_v walk_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sight_n thus_o as_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n manner_n of_o work_v in_o we_o by_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n we_o see_v a_o necessity_n of_o live_v by_o faith_n even_o beyond_o and_o contrary_a to_o sense_n so_o also_o if_o we_o consider_v on_o the_o other_o side_n our_o weakness_n in_o apprehend_v this_o wisdom_n of_o our_o god_n our_o difference_n in_o apply_v christ_n we_o may_v yet_o further_o see_v a_o great_a necessity_n of_o this_o rule_n even_o still_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n both_o for_o our_o trial_n and_o comfort_n herein_o as_o first_o for_o trial_n whereas_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n be_v in_o general_a in_o a_o mystery_n have_v we_o not_o need_v of_o faith_n to_o discern_v the_o same_o if_o we_o walk_v by_o sense_n and_o not_o by_o faith_n shall_v we_o not_o miss_v in_o the_o discern_a and_o judge_v thereof_o 2_o whereas_o the_o mystery_n of_o this_o growth_n though_o it_o be_v in_o part_n discern_v of_o we_o not_o so_o much_o as_o we_o have_v knowledge_n thereof_o as_o we_o find_v the_o practice_n and_o experience_n of_o the_o same_o yet_o in_o regard_n our_o knowledge_n 〈◊〉_d imperfect_a even_o in_o what_o we_o do_v apprehend_v much_o more_o to_o seek_v of_o what_o be_v not_o yet_o reveal_v &_o our_o best_a experience_a practice_n be_v general_o subject_a to_o infirmity_n &_o so_o to_o distraction_n &_o error_n how_o can_v we_o be_v sustain_v in_o hope_n of_o what_o be_v yet_o in_o expectation_n unless_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n to_o make_v it_o present_a unto_o we_o that_o so_o in_o patience_n we_o may_v wait_v for_o the_o same_o explain_v we_o yet_o i_o pray_v you_o a_o little_a these_o particular_n sure_o as_o be_v our_o sanctification_n so_o be_v our_o apprehension_n of_o the_o end_n for_o as_o it_o be_v the_o great_a trial_n of_o our_o faith_n though_o it_o hold_v be_v but_o weak_a and_o sometime_o stagger_a yet_o not_o to_o let_v go_v it_o hold_v because_o the_o virtue_n of_o faith_n consist_v not_o so_o much_o in_o it_o own_o ability_n or_o worth_n in_o apprehend_v christ_n for_o so_o it_o have_v wherein_o to_o beast_n in_o itself_o and_o not_o in_o god_n but_o in_o the_o worthiness_n of_o what_o it_o apprehend_v which_o be_v the_o more_o advance_a by_o how_o much_o our_o work_n be_v debase_v so_o by_o so_o much_o the_o more_o do_v it_o thrive_v and_o increase_v as_o it_o ascribe_v the_o glory_n in_o it_o weakness_n to_o it_o head_n christ_n jesus_n as_o hereby_o receive_v new_a power_n from_o christ_n whereby_o it_o may_v yet_o get_v fast_o hold_v and_o so_o by_o the_o wise_a hand_n of_o our_o god_n that_o those_o which_o have_v not_o feel_v these_o pang_n in_o extremity_n in_o the_o travel_n of_o the_o new_a birth_n they_o usual_o be_v overtake_v with_o they_o in_o the_o grow_n up_o thereof_o lest_o they_o shall_v insult_v over_o their_o brethren_n and_o because_o they_o may_v through_o spiritual_a pride_n and_o security_n fall_v into_o such_o evil_n that_o may_v of_o necessity_n require_v such_o bitter_a physic_n whence_o we_o may_v conclude_v 1._o that_o though_o all_o have_v not_o the_o like_a measure_n of_o humiliation_n at_o their_o conversion_n yet_o may_v we_o not_o hereby_o conclude_v that_o those_o that_o have_v have_v none_o or_o less_o than_o other_o be_v not_o true_o convert_v no_o more_o than_o it_o follow_v that_o those_o which_o have_v have_v deep_a measure_n of_o humiliation_n be_v true_o convert_v for_o as_o it_o fall_v out_o in_o false_a conception_n and_o abortive_n that_o though_o the_o mother_n be_v put_v to_o intolerable_a pain_n yet_o she_o miscarry_v in_o the_o birth_n so_o it_o fare_v with_o many_o hypocrite_n who_o though_o they_o have_v be_v exceed_o abase_v by_o the_o law_n even_o to_o extremity_n of_o despair_n yet_o either_o have_v they_o be_v swallow_v up_o in_o that_o fearful_a pit_n and_o so_o prevent_v of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n or_o else_o if_o it_o have_v fall_v out_o that_o by_o mean_n either_o spiritual_a or_o carnal_a they_o have_v receive_v some_o relief_n and_o ease_n of_o their_o pang_n for_o the_o present_a and_o so_o have_v be_v give_v up_o to_o hardness_n of_o heart_n to_o sleep_v in_o that_o senseless_a estate_n howsoever_o they_o may_v imagine_v this_o security_n to_o be_v true_a peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o so_o thereupon_o dream_v of_o a_o conversion_n yet_o be_v they_o so_o far_o from_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o work_n as_o that_o this_o their_o estate_n exclude_v they_o from_o all_o possibility_n thereof_o yea_o expose_v they_o to_o sudden_a and_o unavoidable_a vengeance_n 1._o thess_n 5.3_o and_o yet_o on_o the_o other_o side_n as_o we_o see_v many_o mother_n to_o have_v speedy_a &_o easy_a deliverance_n so_o fare_v it_o with_o too_o much_o humble_v in_o the_o sense_n thereof_o to_o prevent_v hypocrisy_n and_o relapse_n thereinto_o yet_o that_o in_o this_o case_n we_o wise_o submit_v to_o our_o god_n for_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o humiliation_n not_o indent_v with_o he_o to_o be_v humble_v as_o such_o and_o such_o because_o happy_o we_o have_v observe_v their_o deep_a humiliation_n to_o be_v recompense_v in_o due_a season_n with_o extraordinary_a comfort_n lest_o it_o befall_v contrary_a to_o we_o then_o unto_o they_o see_v the_o case_n be_v different_a for_o though_o they_o by_o dispensation_n of_o the_o
