their_o own_o destruction_n 2_o pet._n 3._o 16._o we_o have_v many_o now_o adays_o of_o this_o rank_n who_o the_o apostle_n describe_v by_o their_o condition_n and_o by_o their_o follower_n 2_o tim._n 3._o from_o the_o first_o to_o the_o ten_o verse_n and_o among_o other_o their_o condition_n he_o say_v ver_fw-la 5._o that_o they_o have_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n that_o be_v they_o can_v allege_v scripture_n to_o their_o own_o end_n though_o they_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o it_o in_o their_o life_n second_o he_o say_v they_o be_v man_n of_o corrupt_a mind_n and_o reprobate_a concern_v down_o corruption_n and_o error_n fast_o than_o truth_n how_o many_o year_n have_v many_o of_o god_n faithful_a minister_n be_v painful_o preach_v truth_n in_o public_a as_o christ_n do_v to_o some_o people_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o same_o but_o now_o of_o late_o we_o have_v have_v a_o brood_n of_o sectary_n and_o they_o have_v whisper_v up_o and_o down_o in_o corner_n man_n that_o have_v come_v in_o their_o own_o name_n and_o what_o abundance_n of_o follower_n have_v they_o get_v upon_o the_o sudden_a it_o be_v a_o true_a say_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o such_o kind_n of_o follower_n i_o be_o come_v in_o my_o father_n name_n and_o you_o receive_v i_o not_o if_o another_o shall_v come_v in_o his_o own_o name_n him_z you_o will_v receive_v joh._n 5._o 43._o and_o indeed_o you_o may_v always_o know_v a_o error_n by_o people_n readiness_n to_o receive_v it_o like_o will_n to_o like_v a_o corrupt_a doctrine_n will_v quick_o take_v a_o corrupt_a heart_n and_o you_o may_v discover_v evil_a man_n and_o false_a teacher_n by_o this_o they_o that_o can_v or_o do_v not_o apply_v scripture_n to_o themselves_o for_o the_o humiliation_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o for_o the_o sanctification_n of_o their_o own_o tongue_n and_o life_n as_o many_o of_o these_o do_v not_o can_v right_o apply_v they_o for_o other_o instruction_n at_o least_o they_o may_v be_v suspect_v in_o their_o allegation_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n be_v the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n good_a man_n may_v be_v mistake_v in_o allege_v scripture_n therefore_o much_o rather_o may_v evil_a but_o i_o will_v hold_v you_o no_o long_o in_o the_o context_n i_o come_v to_o the_o carriage_n and_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o text_n itself_o wherein_o we_o have_v two_o thing_n 1._o our_o saviour_n dislike_n of_o their_o motion_n 2._o his_o confutation_n of_o it_o his_o dislike_n in_o the_o first_o word_n he_o turn_v and_o rebuke_v they_o his_o confutation_n in_o the_o rest_n and_o first_o of_o the_o first_o he_o turn_v and_o rebuke_v they_o doubtless_o the_o apostle_n expect_v another_o kind_n of_o 1_o turn_n than_o they_o here_o meet_v withal_o they_o look_v he_o shall_v have_v turn_v and_o commend_v they_o for_o their_o zeal_n and_o say_v well_o i_o see_v yet_o some_o body_n love_v i_o though_o other_o care_v not_o for_o i_o yet_o and_o hand_n too_o if_o they_o have_v advantage_n against_o their_o own_o enemy_n that_o have_v use_v they_o ill_o or_o against_o christ_n enemy_n that_o have_v use_v he_o ill_o be_v to_o be_v rebuke_v we_o minister_n may_v nay_o we_o must_v rebuke_v such_o spirit_n and_o such_o motion_n and_o a_o great_a many_o such_o spirit_n have_v we_o now_o adays_o who_o if_o we_o shall_v rebuke_v as_o christ_n here_o do_v his_o disciple_n they_o will_v cry_v out_o upon_o we_o for_o no_o friend_n of_o christ_n or_o of_o his_o cause_n no_o but_o friend_n of_o publican_n and_o sinner_n rather_o as_o the_o pharisee_n say_v that_o christ_n be_v when_o he_o rebuke_v they_o the_o pharisee_n indeed_o will_v have_v have_v christ_n rebuke_v none_o but_o those_o that_o themselves_o call_v and_o count_v publican_n and_o sinner_n and_o never_o to_o have_v meddle_v with_o they_o though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o hypocritical_a and_o vile_a for_o if_o he_o do_v at_o any_o time_n they_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o defame_v he_o and_o exclaim_v upon_o he_o and_o miscall_v he_o so_o now_o we_o have_v many_o that_o will_v have_v we_o minister_n preach_v only_o against_o the_o sin_n of_o drunkard_n and_o profane_a person_n and_o superstitious_a papist_n but_o by_o no_o mean_n they_o will_v not_o have_v we_o touch_v the_o sin_n of_o professor_n be_v they_o never_o so_o unblamable_a for_o they_o can_v they_o will_v not_o bear_v it_o at_o our_o hand_n our_o good_a name_n at_o least_o shall_v sure_o smart_v for_o it_o if_o we_o do_v the_o least_o glance_n in_o a_o sermon_n against_o their_o hypocrisy_n or_o headlong_a zeal_n be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n with_o many_o of_o they_o to_o make_v they_o whisper_v we_o about_o the_o country_n to_o be_v man_n of_o most_o bitter_a spirit_n against_o all_o goodness_n and_o against_o god_n people_n indeed_o few_o man_n do_v we_o meet_v withal_o that_o will_v take_v rebuke_n as_o the_o disciple_n here_o do_v special_o when_o they_o be_v rebuke_v for_o their_o rash_a zeal_n in_o the_o cause_n of_o god_n or_o christ_n for_o which_o they_o expect_v commendation_n rather_o and_o perhaps_o it_o be_v that_o only_a which_o many_o of_o they_o aim_n at_o but_o it_o show_v that_o such_o be_v professor_n rather_o of_o the_o pharisee_n stamp_n then_o of_o the_o disciple_n however_o our_o saviour_n example_n and_o action_n do_v here_o 〈◊〉_d we_o that_o rash_a 〈◊〉_d deserve_v no_o commendation_n but_o rebuke_v rather_o observe_v again_o that_o christ_n do_v not_o bid_v his_o disciple_n consider_v whether_o the_o good_a that_o may_v come_v by_o burn_v the_o town_n will_v outweigh_v the_o loss_n thereof_o as_o the_o powder_n traitor_n when_o the_o case_n be_v propound_v among_o they_o whether_o the_o popish_a lord_n and_o knight_n in_o the_o parliament_n house_n shall_v be_v blow_v up_o among_o the_o rest_n they_o consult_v whether_o the_o good_a that_o may_v come_v to_o the_o catholic_a cause_n by_o that_o deadly_a blow_n will_v not_o outweigh_v the_o loss_n of_o they_o and_o find_v in_o their_o hellish_a thought_n that_o it_o will_v they_o conclude_v to_o blow_v up_o they_o too_o no_o our_o saviour_n christ_n do_v not_o go_v that_o way_n to_o work_v here_o with_o his_o disciple_n
they_o afterward_o for_o as_o saint_n paul_n tell_v they_o if_o you_o have_v hearken_v to_o i_o you_o have_v not_o gain_v this_o harm_n and_o loss_n and_o so_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n and_o jeremy_n be_v never_o believe_v when_o they_o spend_v their_o judgement_n of_o those_o matter_n and_o even_o so_o still_o for_o the_o most_o part_n peace_n peace_n be_v best_a music_n to_o the_o carnal_a ear_n and_o they_o that_o sing_v that_o even_o when_o danger_n be_v at_o the_o door_n shall_v be_v applaud_v by_o many_o a_o one_o so_o be_v ahab_n prophet_n but_o if_o a_o man_n play_n micaiah_n and_o speak_v the_o truth_n and_o tell_v the_o danger_n that_o be_v close_o by_o than_o cast_v he_o into_o the_o prisonhouse_n lay_v he_o by_o the_o heel_n feed_v he_o with_o the_o bread_n and_o water_n of_o affliction_n but_o how_o ever_o man_n take_v the_o thing_n yet_o god_n like_v it_o well_o for_o we_o may_v observe_v though_o he_o often_o in_o his_o word_n find_v fault_n with_o the_o prophet_n for_o preach_v smooth_a thing_n for_o cry_v peace_n yet_o never_o for_o preach_v his_o law_n and_o judgement_n never_o for_o foretell_v danger_n and_o yet_o here_o too_o though_o the_o godly_a be_v able_a to_o distinguish_v of_o evil_a time_n i_o do_v not_o say_v all_o that_o talk_v of_o evil_a time_n must_v needs_o be_v godly_a for_o many_o be_v always_o complain_v of_o the_o badness_n of_o the_o time_n wherein_o themselves_o live_v and_o never_o any_o see_v such_o bad_a time_n as_o they_o though_o indeed_o they_o will_v not_o be_v know_v that_o themselves_o and_o such_o as_o they_o be_v do_v make_v they_o so_o bad_a as_o they_o be_v they_o whisper_v and_o backbite_v and_o slander_n and_o persecute_v with_o all_o bitterness_n in_o their_o way_n with_o their_o tongue_n and_o so_o move_v and_o provoke_v other_o to_o cross_v their_o mind_n another_o way_n with_o their_o power_n they_o will_v speak_v evil_a of_o dignity_n of_o man_n in_o place_n and_o authority_n and_o authority_n can_v abide_v to_o come_v under_o the_o lash_n of_o inferior_a tongue_n nor_o be_v it_o fit_v it_o shall_v if_o it_o do_v it_o will_v make_v they_o smart_v another_o way_n and_o complain_v for_o somewhat_o as_o the_o master_n will_v the_o servant_n and_o the_o father_n the_o child_n that_o speak_v against_o he_o authority_n suppose_v and_o well_o may_v if_o man_n murmur_v against_o it_o that_o they_o dislike_v of_o it_o that_o they_o will_v not_o it_o shall_v rule_v over_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o account_v such_o as_o enemy_n unto_o it_o and_o deal_v with_o they_o often_o as_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n i_o say_v not_o that_o it_o be_v their_o custom_n be_v godly_a and_o wise_a to_o keep_v silence_n in_o evil_a time_n especial_o when_o they_o be_v in_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o office_n for_o the_o magistrate_n if_o he_o be_v right_a will_v speak_v then_o in_o special_a and_o do_v too_o for_o the_o remove_n of_o evil_n and_o the_o minister_n be_v a_o watchman_n set_v as_o it_o be_v on_o a_o hill_n to_o give_v warning_n will_v so_o do_v both_o of_o the_o evil_a present_n and_o of_o the_o danger_n come_v if_o he_o be_v of_o the_o true_a stamp_n he_o neither_o will_v nor_o must_v spare_v to_o speak_v though_o not_o his_o own_o word_n yet_o the_o word_n of_o god_n out_o of_o god_n book_n in_o a_o discreet_a way_n with_o due_a respect_n to_o those_o above_o he_o that_o no_o disaffection_n by_o his_o mean_n be_v wrought_v in_o man_n heart_n towards_o they_o their_o person_n or_o place_n this_o i_o say_v he_o will_v do_v if_o wise_a and_o godly_a when_o he_o be_v in_o place_n i_o mean_v in_o the_o discharge_n of_o his_o office_n though_o at_o other_o time_n and_o season_n he_o be_v as_o a_o private_a man_n and_o like_o such_o a_o one_o at_o such_o time_n demean_n himself_o for_o indeed_o of_o such_o i_o suppose_v the_o prophet_n here_o speak_v of_o private_a man_n underling_n as_o i_o may_v so_o call_v they_o such_o as_o be_v liable_a to_o be_v afflict_v by_o the_o mighty_a and_o turn_v from_o their_o right_n for_o if_o you_o mark_v the_o former_a verse_n he_o there_o speak_v of_o such_o so_o abuse_v the_o just_a afflict_a bribe_v take_v against_o they_o and_o the_o poor_a turn_v from_o their_o right_n in_o the_o gate_n than_o he_o add_v this_o verse_n of_o the_o text_n and_o bring_v it_o in_o with_o a_o illative_a therefore_o which_o
