see_v what_o the_o lord_n say_v of_o jehoshaphat_n that_o be_v godly_a nevertheless_o there_o be_v good_a thing_n find_v in_o thou_o in_o that_o thou_o have_v take_v away_o the_o grove_n out_o of_o the_o land_n and_o have_v prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n jehoshaphat_n be_v find_v guilty_a in_o join_v himself_o to_o wicked_a man_n too_o much_o the_o prophet_n come_v and_o say_v to_o he_o will_v thou_o help_v the_o ungodly_a and_o love_v they_o that_o hate_v the_o lord_n therefore_o be_v wrath_n upon_o thou_o from_o before_o the_o lord_n jehoshaphat_n here_o we_o see_v be_v very_o faulty_a in_o join_v with_o those_o that_o be_v wicked_a and_o be_v rebuke_v by_o the_o prophet_n from_o the_o lord_n what_o will_v thou_o join_v with_o the_o wicked_a the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o thou_o well_o but_o for_o all_o that_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o that_o at_o that_o time_n when_o the_o lord_n be_v most_o displease_v against_o jehoshaphat_n and_o send_v his_o prophet_n in_o his_o name_n to_o pronounce_v this_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v out_o against_o he_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o god_n can_v but_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o that_o he_o have_v a_o upright_a heart_n though_o he_o fail_v in_o that_o particular_a yet_o there_o be_v some_o good_a find_v in_o thou_o in_o that_o thou_o have_v prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n indeed_o through_o some_o sudden_a temptation_n thou_o be_v draw_v aside_o in_o this_o particular_a act_n yea_o but_o it_o have_v be_v thy_o care_n to_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v i_o and_o in_o that_o regard_n i_o do_v look_v upon_o thou_o as_o have_v a_o upright_a heart_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v how_o much_o the_o scripture_n put_v upon_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n and_o so_o in_o 1_o sam._n 7.3_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o scripture_n make_v the_o uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o and_o samuel_n speak_v unto_o all_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n say_v if_o you_o do_v return_n unto_o the_o lord_n with_o all_o your_o heart_n what_o then_o then_o put_v away_o the_o strange_a god_n and_o ashtaroth_n from_o among_o you_o and_o prepare_v your_o heart_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o serve_v he_o only_o as_o if_o samuel_n shall_v say_v if_o you_o will_v return_v indeed_o to_o the_o lord_n if_o indeed_o your_o heart_n be_v duty_n that_o we_o be_v set_v about_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o the_o manner_n how_o it_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v the_o rule_n by_o which_o we_o be_v to_o be_v guide_v the_o end_n that_o we_o be_v to_o aim_v at_o meditation_n be_v a_o good_a preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n and_o these_o be_v the_o general_a head_n of_o our_o i_n ditation_n for_o our_o preparation_n to_o duty_n viz._n what_o god_n he_o be_v we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o meditate_v of_o god_n n_o his_o attribute_n and_o then_o meditate_v of_o the_o weight_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o they_o and_o the_o rule_n of_o they_o and_o the_o end_n of_o they_o get_v your_o heart_n possess_v with_o meditation_n of_o this_o nature_n and_o in_o this_o as_o a_o special_a thing_n do_v consist_v your_o preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n 2_o the_o second_o thing_n wherein_o the_o preparation_n to_o a_o duty_n consist_v it_o be_v in_o this_o in_o the_o take_n off_o of_o the_o heart_n from_o every_o sinful_a way_n the_o endeavour_n at_o least_o if_o there_o be_v iniquity_n in_o thy_o hand_n or_o heart_n labour_v to_o put_v it_o out_o when_o thou_o be_v come_v into_o god_n presence_n do_v not_o bring_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n the_o love_n of_o any_o sin_n in_o thy_o heart_n but_o labour_v to_o put_v it_o from_o thy_o heart_n in_o 2_o chron._n 29.5_o we_o find_v there_o what_o be_v require_v to_o preparation_n the_o text_n say_v hezekiah_n say_v unto_o they_o hear_v i_o you_o levite_n sanctify_v now_o yourselves_o and_o sanctify_v the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n of_o your_o father_n and_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o the_o holy_a place_n that_o be_v sanctify_v a_o thing_n to_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthynesse_n out_o of_o that_o thing_n that_o we_o will_v sanctify_v so_o the_o sanctify_a of_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v by_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o our_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o ensnare_v and_o entangle_v in_o this_o and_o the_o other_o business_n now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o must_v lay_v aside_o all_o for_o there_o be_v the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o separate_n of_o it_o for_o such_o a_o work_n for_o that_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o sanctification_n the_o separate_n of_o a_o thing_n from_o a_o common_a use_n i_o be_o to_o worship_n god_n now_o i_o must_v labour_v to_o separate_v my_o heart_n from_o a_o common_a use_n at_o other_o time_n god_n give_v i_o liberty_n to_o let_v out_o my_o heart_n to_o common_a use_n but_o now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o i_o must_v separate_v my_o heart_n from_o all_o common_a use_n that_o my_o heart_n may_v be_v whole_o for_o god_n i_o remember_v it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o story_n of_o sicily_n which_o be_v lord-treasurer_n that_o when_o he_o go_v to_o read_v he_o will_v lay_v his_o gown_n off_o and_o say_v lie_v there_o lord_n sicily_n so_o when_o we_o go_v to_o duty_n we_o shall_v say_v lie_v by_o world_n and_o by_o lay_v aside_o the_o world_n i_o mean_v lay_v aside_o of_o all_o household_n affair_n or_o affair_n in_o trade_n etc._n etc._n i_o must_v be_v as_o one_o that_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o the_o world_n for_o that_o time_n it_o be_v true_a the_o time_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v holy_a for_o this_o as_o the_o time_n of_o the_o sabbath_n day_n be_v holy_a you_o will_v say_v why_o may_v not_o any_o time_n be_v say_v to_o be_v holy_a that_o i_o spend_v in_o holy_a duty_n no_o that_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o make_v time_n holy_a for_o the_o time_n that_o god_n make_v holy_a it_o be_v not_o holy_a because_o of_o the_o duty_n that_o i_o perform_v in_o it_o but_o the_o duty_n that_o i_o perform_v then_o be_v more_o acceptable_a because_o they_o be_v do_v in_o such_o a_o time_n and_o so_o that_o make_v a_o place_n holy_a not_o because_o it_o be_v appoint_v for_o holy_a duty_n and_o use_n but_o because_o it_o be_v so_o appoint_v by_o god_n and_o the_o perform_v a_o duty_n in_o that_o place_n be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o god_n than_o in_o another_o place_n but_o now_o though_o we_o can_v make_v our_o time_n holy_a in_o that_o second_o sense_n yet_o in_o the_o first_o it_o be_v time_n set_v apart_o for_o a_o holy_a use_n and_o in_o that_o
that_o be_v there_o must_v not_o be_v a_o heart_n and_o a_o heart_n there_o must_v not_o be_v a_o compound_a heart_n but_o you_o must_v bring_v simple_a heart_n before_o god_n without_o any_o composition_n of_o dross_n in_o yourselves_o and_o of_o any_o kind_n of_o falseness_n but_o in_o the_o simplicity_n of_o your_o heart_n you_o must_v come_v to_o worship_n god_n and_o thus_o you_o shall_v worship_v he_o with_o such_o worship_n as_o be_v some_o way_n suitable_a to_o he_o as_o he_o be_v a_o spirit_n 2_o further_n consider_v god_n as_o he_o be_v a_o eternal_a god_n what_o suitable_a disposition_n do_v this_o require_v of_o i_o when_o i_o be_o to_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o eternal_a be_v it_o require_v this_o only_a that_o therefore_o thy_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o from_o all_o temporal_a good_a thing_n and_o set_v upon_o that_o eternal_a good_a thou_o may_v indeed_o desire_v these_o outward_a good_a thing_n but_o in_o order_n to_o thy_o eternal_a good_a then_o further_o thou_o be_v worship_v a_o eternal_a god_n hence_o than_o whatsoever_o sin_n thou_o do_v confess_v although_o commit_v 20._o or_o 40._o year_n ago_o thou_o must_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v now_o present_o commit_v and_o be_v humble_v as_o much_o before_o the_o lord_n as_o if_o it_o be_v now_o commit_v at_o this_o present_a you_o will_v say_v why_o so_o because_o god_n be_v a_o eternal_a god_n yes_o for_o if_o i_o understand_v god_n eternity_n i_o know_v that_o there_o be_v no_o succession_n in_o god_n be_v therefore_o the_o sin_n that_o i_o commit_v in_o my_o youth_n if_o i_o come_v to_o confess_v they_o they_o be_v before_o god_n as_o if_o they_o be_v now_o a_o do_v in_o regard_n of_o time_n and_o therefore_o i_o must_v as_o much_o as_o i_o can_v look_v so_o upon_o they_o and_o be_v humble_v for_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v sin_n late_o commit_v many_o people_n be_v trouble_v for_o their_o sin_n the_o very_a day_n after_o they_o commit_v they_o but_o a_o little_a time_n wear_v off_o their_o trouble_n but_o if_o you_o do_v consider_v that_o you_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o a_o eternal_a god_n than_o you_o will_v look_v upon_o your_o sin_n though_o a_o long_a time_n since_o commit_v as_o if_o they_o be_v but_o now_o do_v likewise_o there_o will_v be_v this_o require_v from_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n eternity_n you_o must_v come_v with_o such_o a_o disposition_n of_o heart_n as_o not_o to_o think_v much_o though_o what_o you_o desire_v be_v defer_v and_o not_o grant_v in_o your_o time_n when_o you_o will_v have_v it_o for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o time_n that_o alter_v with_o god_n but_o a_o thousand_o year_n be_v with_o god_n as_o one_o day_n then_o that_o that_o we_o account_v long_o before_o it_o be_v do_v it_o be_v nothing_o with_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v have_v our_o heart_n so_o work_v towards_o god_n as_o towards_o a_o eternal_a god_n as_o one_o with_o who_o there_o be_v no_o alteration_n of_o time_n at_o all_o with_o who_o there_o be_v no_o succession_n of_o time_n if_o we_o come_v to_o a_o man_n and_o seek_v any_o thing_n of_o he_o if_o he_o do_v not_o answer_v we_o present_o we_o will_v think_v that_o he_o will_v forget_v it_o and_o other_o thing_n will_v come_v into_o his_o mind_n but_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n we_o must_v look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o eternal_a be_v and_o that_o time_n alter_v nothing_o with_o he_o thus_o understanding_n god_n in_o a_o right_a way_n will_v much_o help_v we_o in_o his_o worship_n and_o to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n we_o can_v sanctify_v god_n name_n without_o know_v his_o name_n without_o have_v serious_a thought_n about_o his_o name_n and_o get_v our_o heart_n to_o work_v according_o 3_o three_o look_v upon_o god_n when_o you_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o in_o his_o incomprehensible_a be_v that_o be_v as_o a_o god_n that_o fill_v all_o place_n his_o be_v be_v as_o real_a in_o the_o room_n that_o we_o be_v pray_v in_o the_o place_n that_o we_o be_v meet_v in_o as_o it_o be_v in_o heaven_n now_o then_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o that_o infinite_a glorious_a be_v stand_v before_o we_o look_v upon_o we_o be_v at_o our_o elbow_n and_o therefore_o especial_o when_o you_o worship_n in_o secret_n consider_v this_o it_o be_v good_a to_o consider_v it_o when_o you_o be_v with_o other_o but_o especial_o i_o say_v consider_v it_o when_o you_o be_v in_o secret_a and_o know_v that_o when_o you_o be_v most_o private_a you_o have_v one_o that_o look_v on_o you_o and_z takes_z notice_n of_o you_o who_o be_v more_o than_o if_o you_o have_v ten_o hundred_o thousand_o witness_n stand_v by_o you_o and_o look_v upon_o you_o for_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n that_o stand_v by_o you_o and_o see_v your_o behaviour_n see_v what_o you_o do_v in_o your_o worship_v of_o he_o take_v heed_n therefore_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o do_v by_o you_o that_o be_v unbeseeming_a the_o presence_n of_o such_o a_o god_n as_o the_o lord_n be_v suppose_v that_o some_o of_o you_o be_v pray_v and_o there_o be_v some_o godly_a able_a minister_n stand_v near_o you_o it_o will_v be_v some_o mean_n to_o stir_v up_o your_o heart_n to_o mind_n what_o you_o do_v but_o now_o the_o lord_n he_o be_v not_o in_o the_o next_o room_n only_o but_o in_o the_o same_o room_n and_o stand_v by_o you_o lâ—t_v there_o be_v nothing_o do_v therefore_o unbeseeming_a the_o presence_n of_o that_o infinite_a holy_a god_n that_o stand_v by_o you_o and_o hold_v this_o truth_n forth_o the_o lord_n be_v displeasure_n against_o sin_n now_o as_o ever_o he_o have_v and_o that_o god_n that_o have_v do_v such_o great_a thing_n for_o his_o church_n in_o former_a time_n be_v the_o same_o god_n to_o do_v good_a to_o his_o people_n as_o ever_o he_o be_v and_o make_v use_n of_o this_o when_o you_o read_v the_o word_n and_o there_o find_v how_o god_n have_v make_v himself_o appear_v to_o be_v glorious_a for_o his_o people_n and_o now_o every_o time_n i_o be_o to_o worship_n god_n i_o shall_v think_v that_o i_o be_o to_o deal_v with_o god_n that_o be_v the_o same_o that_o ever_o he_o be_v as_o merciful_a and_o gracious_a and_o just_a and_o powerful_a as_o ever_o he_o be_v and_o so_o my_o heart_n be_v to_o work_v towards_o he_o 5_o five_o when_o i_o be_o to_o worship_n god_n i_o be_o to_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o the_o live_a god_n as_o that_o god_n that_o have_v life_n in_o himself_o and_o give_v life_n unto_o his_o creature_n then_o what_o suitable_a behaviour_n do_v become_v i_o i_o must_v come_v before_o his_o presence_n with_o fear_n it_o be_v a_o fearful_a thing_n to_o fall_v into_o his_o hand_n that_o be_v the_o live_a god_n that_o have_v my_o life_n under_o his_o foot_n he_o have_v the_o absolute_a dispose_n of_o my_o present_a and_o eternal_a condition_n he_o give_v i_o my_o life_n he_o have_v preserve_v my_o life_n and_o so_o may_v take_v it_o away_o when_o he_o please_v and_o bring_v death_n eternal_a death_n unto_o i_o these_o thing_n may_v marveilous_o help_v your_o meditation_n when_o you_o be_v to_o come_v before_o he_o you_o who_o be_v barren_a in_o your_o meditation_n go_v over_o the_o attribute_n of_o god_n thus_o and_o consider_v what_o you_o may_v be_v able_a to_o draw_v from_o thence_o god_n he_o be_v the_o live_a god_n what_o behaviour_n then_o do_v beseem_v i_o towards_o this_o live_a god_n oh_o let_v i_o be_v afraid_a lest_o my_o soul_n depart_v from_o the_o live_a god_n let_v i_o bring_v a_o live_a service_n to_o he_o i_o must_v not_o bring_v a_o dead_a heart_n let_v i_o take_v heed_n how_o i_o come_v before_o the_o live_a god_n
or_o so_o full_o understand_v but_o suppose_v it_o be_v not_o so_o you_o be_v to_o come_v to_o it_o as_o a_o ordinance_n of_o god_n for_o the_o conveyance_n of_o spiritual_a good_a to_o your_o soul_n you_o will_v say_v can_v we_o fit_v at_o home_n and_o read_v a_o sermon_n but_o have_v god_n appoint_v that_o the_o great_a ordinance_n for_o the_o convert_n and_o the_o edify_n of_o soul_n in_o the_o way_n of_o eternal_a life_n true_o there_o be_v some_o use_n of_o it_o but_o the_o great_a ordinance_n be_v the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n faith_n come_v by_o hear_v the_o scripture_n say_v and_o never_o by_o read_v so_o that_o though_o when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v you_o do_v not_o hear_v that_o which_o you_o hear_v not_o before_o yet_o you_o come_v to_o attend_v upon_o this_o ordinance_n for_o the_o conveyance_n of_o some_o spiritual_a good_a that_o it_o may_v be_v have_v not_o be_v convey_v before_o or_o in_o a_o further_a degree_n than_o it_o have_v be_v convey_v before_o and_o so_o you_o shall_v come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o your_o heart_n possess_v with_o that_o meditation_n that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o great_a ordinance_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v for_o the_o conveyance_n of_o spiritual_a good_a so_o that_o i_o come_v now_o in_o obedience_n to_o god_n and_o in_o this_o do_v i_o testify_v my_o respect_n to_o god_n that_o i_o will_v attend_v upon_o this_o ordinance_n of_o his_o for_o the_o conveyance_n of_o spiritual_a good_a to_o i_o and_o although_o i_o may_v think_v that_o this_o or_o the_o other_o mean_n may_v do_v the_o deed_n as_o well_o yet_o because_o god_n have_v appoint_v this_o to_o be_v his_o ordinance_n therefore_o in_o obedience_n to_o he_o i_o will_v attend_v upon_o this_o mean_n rather_o than_o upon_o other_o mean_n as_o you_o know_v naaman_n he_o think_v the_o other_o water_n will_v have_v be_v as_o good_a as_o the_o water_n of_o jordan_n to_o have_v heal_v he_o but_o if_o god_n will_v appoint_v he_o the_o water_n of_o jordan_n that_o they_o shall_v heal_v he_o rather_o than_o other_o water_n he_o must_v wash_v there_o no_o question_n but_o other_o water_n have_v as_o much_o natural_a virtue_n in_o they_o as_o they_o have_v but_o because_o the_o water_n of_o jordan_n be_v the_o ordinance_n that_o god_n for_o that_o time_n have_v appoint_v to_o cure_v his_o leprosy_n withal_o he_o must_v come_v and_o wash_v in_o those_o water_n rather_o than_o in_o any_o other_o so_o because_o preach_v of_o the_o word_n be_v the_o great_a ordinance_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v for_o to_o in_o jer._n 4.3_o and_o so_o in_o hos_n 10._o the_o word_n of_o god_n you_o know_v be_v compare_v to_o seed_n in_o that_o parable_n of_o christ_n in_o mat._n 13._o and_o a_o auditory_a be_v compare_v to_o the_o ground_n i_o suppose_v you_o be_v all_o acquaint_v with_o that_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a that_o it_o be_v to_o set_v out_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o what_o fruit_n it_o need_n look_v to_o their_o heart_n they_o shall_v spend_v some_o time_n in_o preparation_n when_o they_o come_v to_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v when_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o man_n they_o find_v their_o heart_n to_o be_v in_o at_o this_o time_n now_o if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v upright_o with_o god_n though_o through_o infirmity_n it_o come_v at_o such_o a_o time_n to_o be_v unprepared_a for_o the_o duty_n but_o yet_o suppose_v i_o find_v i_o be_o not_o prepare_v i_o be_o grieve_v and_o trouble_v at_o it_o for_o that_o must_v be_v premise_v whether_o be_v i_o better_a to_o leave_v the_o duty_n for_o this_o time_n than_o to_o fall_v upon_o it_o in_o such_o a_o unpreparation_n as_o this_o be_v now_o for_o the_o answer_n to_o this_o question_n 1_o first_o that_o which_o i_o will_v answer_v to_o it_o be_v this_o the_o omission_n of_o a_o duty_n or_o the_o lay_n of_o a_o duty_n aside_o will_v never_o observe_v your_o own_o heart_n that_o way_n and_o you_o will_v find_v this_o by_o experience_n such_o a_o time_n you_o have_v be_v buâ—e_a in_o the_o world_n and_o occasion_n have_v hinder_v you_o so_o as_o your_o heart_n be_v out_o of_o temper_n and_o frame_v for_o a_o duty_n you_o lay_v it_o aside_o now_o be_v you_o more_o fâ—t_o the_o next_o day_n if_o you_o do_v neglect_v duty_n in_o the_o morning_n upon_o any_o business_n be_v you_o fit_a to_o perform_v duty_n at_o night_n because_o of_o it_o â—_o you_o will_v not_o find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o the_o forbear_v a_o duty_n now_o will_v not_o make_v the_o soul_n fit_a for_o a_o duty_n afterward_o â—â—erefore_o it_o be_v no_o wisdom_n to_o forbear_v a_o duty_n for_o want_n of_o preparation_n because_o the_o forbearance_n will_v never_o help_v to_o further_a preparation_n but_o will_v make_v the_o soul_n more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n it_o be_v a_o excellent_a speech_n that_o i_o read_v that_o luther_n have_v concern_v himself_o i_o have_v learn_v this_o by_o experience_n that_o the_o often_o i_o do_v omit_v duty_n the_o often_o do_v i_o make_v myself_o the_o more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n and_o cause_n i_o have_v to_o abhor_v myself_o it_o be_v not_o the_o defer_v that_o make_v thou_o the_o more_o fit_a 2_o therefore_o consider_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o will_v propound_v to_o those_o that_o shall_v omit_v a_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n to_o keep_v thou_o from_o it_o to_o tell_v thou_o that_o that_o thing_n but_o if_o i_o take_v it_o and_o lock_v it_o up_o and_o keep_v it_o under_o lock_n and_o key_n i_o do_v thereby_o give_v a_o testimony_n of_o the_o esteem_n that_o i_o have_v of_o the_o mean_v the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n and_o by_o the_o other_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n therefore_o the_o meaning_n be_v this_o here_o be_v a_o comparison_n between_o the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n concern_v the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n wherein_o that_o come_v short_a of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n first_o it_o be_v not_o so_o nigh_o thou_o second_o it_o be_v not_o so_o certain_a to_o assure_v thy_o soul_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o thou_o to_o all_o eternity_n the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n say_v who_o shall_v ascend_v into_o heaven_n etc._n etc._n but_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v nigh_o thou_o even_o in_o thy_o mouth_n and_o in_o thy_o heart_n you_o will_v say_v why_o be_v not_o the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n as_o nigh_o one_o as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n i_o answer_v the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n you_o hear_v it_o in_o your_o ear_n but_o it_o be_v not_o write_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o law_n can_v work_v saving_o upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n to_o bring_v salvation_n those_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a they_o can_v hear_v the_o duty_n that_o be_v require_v but_o that_o word_n have_v no_o power_n to_o write_v in_o their_o heart_n what_o they_o do_v hear_v but_o now_o when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v nigh_o you_o even_o in_o your_o very_a heart_n as_o well_o as_o in_o your_o ear_n god_n speak_v in_o it_o and_o it_o come_v into_o your_o heart_n and_o there_o it_o work_v efficacious_o which_o the_o law_n can_v the_o law_n be_v but_o as_o a_o dead_a letter_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n if_o you_o come_v mere_o to_o hear_v the_o law_n preach_v and_o not_o in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n you_o may_v hear_v it_o a_o hundred_o time_n and_o it_o will_v never_o be_v write_v in_o your_o heart_n but_o when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o gospel_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n that_o will_v come_v to_o be_v write_v in_o your_o heart_n so_o that_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v nigh_o you_o but_o what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o other_o say_v not_o who_o shall_v ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n &_o c_o the_o meaning_n be_v this_o as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v say_v the_o truth_n be_v while_o you_o have_v no_o other_o but_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n you_o be_v at_o a_o infinite_a uncertainty_n about_o your_o eternal_a estate_n the_o law_n say_v do_v and_o live_v but_o you_o can_v never_o know_v when_o you_o have_v do_v enough_o so_o as_o to_o be_v certain_a that_o you_o be_v well_o for_o eternity_n that_o say_v who_o shall_v ascend_v into_o heaven_n to_o know_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n concern_v i_o whether_o he_o will_v accept_v of_o i_o and_o of_o that_o obedience_n and_o worship_n that_o i_o tender_v up_o to_o he_o who_o shall_v go_v down_o into_o the_o deep_a who_o shall_v go_v down_o to_o hell_n to_o know_v there_o whether_o that_o place_n be_v prepare_v for_o he_o or_o no_o it_o be_v a_o phrase_n that_o only_o express_v a_o uncertainty_n that_o one_o can_v be_v satisfy_v about_o his_o eternal_a estate_n
not_o see_v how_o christ_n be_v under_o those_o element_n both_o represent_v and_o exhibit_v unto_o they_o that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n there_o must_v be_v knowledge_n and_o understanding_n and_o now_o for_o the_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o sacrament_n there_o need_v be_v knowledge_n in_o other_o point_n of_o religion_n for_o we_o can_v never_o come_v to_o understand_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o sacrament_n without_o know_v god_n and_o know_v ourselves_o know_v in_o what_o estate_n we_o be_v by_o nature_n know_v our_o fall_n know_v the_o way_n of_o redemption_n know_v jesus_n christ_n what_o he_o be_v and_o what_o he_o have_v do_v for_o the_o make_n of_o a_o atonement_n the_o necessity_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o what_o the_o way_n of_o the_o covenant_n be_v that_o god_n have_v appoint_v to_o bring_v man_n soul_n to_o eternal_a life_n by_o the_o main_a point_n of_o religion_n must_v be_v know_v but_o especial_o that_o that_o concern_v holy_a ordinance_n you_o have_v not_o be_v worthy_a receiver_n of_o this_o sacrament_n you_o have_v cause_n to_o look_v back_o to_o your_o former_a way_n and_o spend_v much_o humiliation_n for_o you_o sin_n herein_o and_o not_o to_o be_v so_o greedy_a of_o it_o as_o some_o be_v they_o must_v have_v the_o communion_n but_o i_o put_v it_o to_o your_o conscience_n have_v you_o repent_v you_o for_o have_v not_o reveal_v it_o we_o have_v not_o be_v bind_v to_o it_o therefore_o in_o these_o duty_n of_o institution_n god_n stand_v very_o punctual_a upon_o they_o we_o must_v be_v very_o axact_a neither_o to_o erse_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n nor_o the_o left_a to_o make_v any_o alteration_n in_o the_o point_n of_o institution_n now_o therefore_o for_o the_o institution_n of_o this_o sacrament_n we_o find_v it_o in_o divers_a of_o the_o evangelist_n in_o matth._n 26.26_o there_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o christ_n and_o his_o disciple_n they_o eat_v the_o sacrament_n together_o table_n or_o those_o that_o can_v near_o to_o it_o and_o the_o rather_o because_o this_o be_v not_o only_o from_o the_o example_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o do_v so_o though_o that_o be_v somewhat_o
