that_o may_v wash_v and_o cleanse_v away_o our_o filth_n and_o of_o spirit_n that_o may_v infuse_v a_o spiritual_a life_n force_n or_o power_n into_o we_o namely_o because_o what_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o flesh_n be_v flesh_n whether_o we_o understand_v it_o of_o the_o first_o birth_n which_o be_v of_o the_o flesh_n or_o of_o any_o change_n or_o alteration_n that_o we_o can_v work_v in_o and_o upon_o ourselves_o by_o any_o wisdom_n will_n or_o strength_n of_o the_o flesh_n in_o any_o observation_n of_o outward_a ordinance_n of_o the_o law_n or_o much_o more_o in_o devise_v tradition_n or_o precept_n of_o man_n all_o that_o be_v so_o beget_v and_o bear_v be_v but_o flesh_n corrupt_v weak_a and_o sinful_a but_o that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n the_o new_a man_n the_o renew_a mind_n judgement_n and_o heart_n that_o be_v spirit_n that_o be_v clean_a holy_a last_a etc._n etc._n now_o whereas_o nicodemus_n marvail_v at_o this_o as_o be_v a_o doctrine_n he_o have_v not_o be_v wonderful_a thing_n in_o the_o spiritual_a effect_n and_o product_n of_o the_o grace_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v comprehend_v as_o in_o eccles_n 11.5_o as_o thou_o know_v not_o the_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o of_o the_o wind_n nor_o how_o the_o bone_n do_v grow_v in_o the_o womb_n of_o she_o that_o be_v with_o child_n so_o thou_o know_v not_o the_o work_n of_o god_n who_o be_v the_o maker_n of_o all_o thing_n but_o in_o this_o every_o one_o that_o be_v beget_v or_o bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o thereby_o be_v make_v spiritual_a be_v like_a to_o the_o wind_n that_o the_o natural_a man_n may_v hear_v his_o speech_n perceive_v a_o sound_n find_v a_o force_n and_o power_n in_o his_o confess_v and_o breathe_v forth_o the_o truth_n but_o whence_o that_o virtue_n be_v receive_v or_o whence_o he_o be_v bear_v and_o bring_v to_o it_o and_o whether_o he_o and_o it_o tend_v what_o be_v his_o original_a and_o end_v the_o natural_a man_n perceive_v and_o thence_o he_o take_v occasion_n to_o show_v the_o difference_n between_o such_o master_n in_o israel_n and_o himself_o and_o his_o servant_n the_o teacher_n send_v of_o god_n very_o very_o i_o say_v unto_o thou_o what_o we_o know_v we_o speak_v and_o testify_v what_o we_o have_v see_v and_o no_o man_n receive_v our_o testimony_n wherein_o our_o saviour_n also_o further_o intimate_v and_o neglect_v the_o weighty_a thing_n concern_v judgement_n faith_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n as_o our_o saviour_n elsewhere_o fault_v the_o pharisee_n luk._n 11.42_o mat._n 23.23_o busy_v themselves_o in_o cut_v and_o lop_n off_o some_o superfluous_a branch_n of_o sin_n while_o they_o let_v the_o root_n the_o heart-blindness_n ignorance_n and_o unbelief_n of_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n and_o the_o rejection_n of_o that_o alone_o and_o so_o under_o pretence_n and_o form_n of_o religion_n and_o godliness_n about_o which_o they_o wrangle_v they_o let_v go_v or_o deny_v the_o power_n life_n and_o heart_n of_o it_o paint_v and_o gild_v over_o rot_a post_n and_o picture_n and_o image_n of_o man_n destitute_a of_o the_o true_a life_n and_o power_n of_o god_n in_o they_o the_o pharisee_n can_v contest_v about_o purification_n outward_a wash_n sacrificing_n observation_n of_o sabbath_n and_o other_o time_n and_o place_n of_o worship_n and_o such_o like_a ceremony_n and_o great_a zeal_n they_o have_v to_o bring_v man_n to_o be_v of_o their_o mind_n and_o way_n in_o such_o thing_n pretend_v to_o and_o persuade_v they_o that_o that_o way_n they_o shall_v be_v fit_a for_o god_n kingdom_n but_o our_o saviour_n who_o know_v all_o thing_n perfect_o be_v for_o the_o bottom_n and_o groundwork_n of_o all_o right_a and_o acceptable_a religion_n he_o know_v and_o teach_v and_o speak_v what_o he_o know_v that_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o endeavour_v to_o make_v the_o fruit_n good_a while_o the_o tree_n that_o shall_v produce_v it_o abide_v naught_o and_o corrupt_a he_o bid_v therefore_o first_o make_v the_o tree_n good_a and_o then_o the_o fruit_n good_a because_o a_o good_a tree_n can_v bring_v forth_o bad_a fruit_n nor_o a_o corrupt_a tree_n good_a fruit_n instead_o exact_o according_a to_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o law_n their_o baptism_n wash_n and_o purification_n never_o so_o many_o or_o diligent_o make_v their_o sacrifice_n never_o so_o costly_a their_o fast_n never_o so_o frequent_a their_o prayer_n never_o so_o long_o or_o fervent_a their_o outward_a walking_n among_o man_n never_o so_o blameless_a and_o circumspect_a yet_o without_o a_o new_a heart_n and_o spirit_n make_v so_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n discern_v and_o embrace_v and_o his_o spirit_n therethrough_a in_o his_o operation_n and_o efficacy_n comply_v with_o all_o will_v avail_v nothing_o to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n kingdom_n and_o this_o be_v very_o needful_a to_o be_v mind_v by_o we_o and_o the_o truth_n and_o certainty_n hereof_o inculcate_v and_o christ_n and_o his_o holy_a servant_n to_o be_v listen_v to_o in_o it_o as_o teacher_n that_o know_v and_o be_v certain_a of_o what_o they_o teach_v and_o not_o the_o blind_a follow_v that_o grope_v at_o thing_n as_o in_o the_o dark_a and_o who_o while_o they_o will_v be_v teacher_n of_o the_o law_n know_v not_o what_o they_o say_v nor_o whereof_o they_o affirm_v who_o as_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n say_v lay_v out_o money_n for_o that_o which_o be_v not_o bread_n and_o their_o labour_n and_o strength_n for_o that_o which_o satisfi_v not_o isa_n 55.2_o dote_v about_o question_n and_o strife_n of_o word_n of_o which_o come_v contention_n and_o perverse_a dispute_n
upbraid_v the_o weakness_n and_o timerousness_n of_o new_a beginner_n let_v we_o learn_v to_o follow_v his_o good_a example_n and_o entertain_v any_o that_o come_v to_o seek_v christ_n with_o we_o though_o they_o come_v tremble_v at_o the_o first_o and_o show_v some_o fearfulness_n to_o be_v know_v by_o other_o to_o do_v so_o well_o it_o be_v a_o evidence_n of_o a_o hearty_a love_n when_o man_n will_v venture_v after_o christ_n notwithstanding_o they_o know_v they_o therein_o go_v cross_a to_o the_o world_n opinion_n and_o do_v that_o which_o they_o will_v turn_v upon_o they_o as_o a_o reproach_n though_o yet_o its_o a_o symptom_n of_o weakness_n to_o be_v afraid_a or_o ashamed_a it_o shall_v be_v take_v notice_n of_o let_v we_o encourage_v what_o be_v good_a and_o bear_v with_o and_o overlook_v the_o weakness_n cleave_v to_o man_n therein_o so_o do_v our_o saviour_n here_o take_v occasion_n meek_o to_o instruct_v nicodemus_n into_o that_o which_o concern_v both_o he_o and_o we_o to_o know_v viz._n the_o necessity_n of_o regeneration_n without_o upbraid_v his_o weakness_n in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o come_n for_o jesus_n answer_v and_o say_v unto_o he_o very_o very_o i_o say_v unto_o thou_o except_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o or_o from_o above_o he_o can_v see_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n there_o be_v a_o heavenly_a kingdom_n or_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n or_o of_o god_n speak_v of_o by_o the_o holy_a prophet_n chief_o by_o daniel_n which_o be_v believe_v and_o look_v for_o of_o the_o jew_n though_o they_o mistake_v many_o thing_n about_o it_o as_o to_o the_o spiritualness_n of_o it_o and_o the_o way_n to_o it_o nicodemus_n therefore_o make_v no_o question_n of_o that_o as_o to_o its_o be_v for_o indeed_o both_o the_o baptist_n and_o our_o saviour_n have_v preach_v its_o nighness_n and_o thereupon_o exhort_v the_o people_n to_o repentance_n mat._n 3.2_o and_o 4.17_o yea_o the_o pharisee_n afterward_o inquire_v of_o he_o of_o the_o time_n of_o its_o come_n as_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o it_o will_v certain_o come_v in_o its_o time_n luk._n 17.20_o and_o the_o people_n think_v it_o shall_v short_o be_v manifest_v luk._n 19.11_o and_o doubtless_o nicodemus_n desire_v to_o see_v and_o enter_v it_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n here_o instruct_v and_o inform_v he_o what_o be_v requisite_a and_o necessary_a thereto_o affirm_v his_o doctrine_n with_o a_o double_a asseveration_n very_o very_o i_o say_v unto_o thou_o that_o except_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d or_o from_o above_o he_o can_v see_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n that_o happy_a state_n in_o which_o god_n more_o immediate_o rule_v and_o bear_v sway_n fill_v those_o that_o be_v subject_a and_o obedient_a to_o his_o government_n with_o righteousness_n peace_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o and_o with_o life_n and_o glory_n everlasting_a in_o soul_n and_o body_n for_o ever_o hereafter_o be_v not_o to_o be_v see_v know_v or_o enjoy_v but_o by_o new_a creature_n those_o that_o be_v bear_v from_o above_o this_o earthly_a and_o carnal_a birth_n be_v so_o much_o defile_v and_o usher_n in_o such_o pollution_n of_o sin_n and_o mortality_n because_o of_o sin_n that_o we_o be_v not_o fit_a without_o another_o high_a birth_n for_o the_o privilege_n of_o god_n kingdom_n into_o which_o no_o unclean_a or_o unrighteous_a thing_n as_o we_o all_o be_v by_o nature_n may_v find_v admission_n in_o this_o natural_a birth_n we_o descend_v of_o the_o first_o adam_n as_o fall_v from_o god_n and_o beget_v in_o his_o own_o sinful_a and_o mortal_a likeness_n but_o its_o necessary_a to_o our_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n kingdom_n that_o we_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o second_o adam_n who_o beget_v child_n in_o his_o image_n and_o likeness_n holy_a and_o heavenly_a one_o birth_n of_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n may_v suffice_v to_o give_v admission_n into_o the_o outward_a form_n and_o court_n of_o the_o church_n and_o unto_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n but_o to_o heaven_n and_o the_o joy_n and_o glory_n thereof_o nothing_o but_o a_o birth_n from_o heaven_n nicodemus_n stound_a at_o this_o doctrine_n and_o yet_o believe_v christ_n to_o be_v a_o teacher_n come_v from_o god_n do_v not_o reject_v it_o as_o false_a but_o inquire_v further_o into_o it_o of_o he_o who_o teach_v he_o it_o and_o who_o he_o think_v also_o be_v fit_a to_o inform_v he_o further_o about_o it_o and_o therefore_o ask_v he_o how_o it_o can_v be_v how_o can_v a_o man_n be_v bear_v say_v he_o when_o he_o be_v old_a as_o probable_o he_o himself_o be_v can_v he_o enter_v into_o his_o mother_n womb_n the_o second_o time_n and_o be_v bear_v in_o which_o he_o show_v the_o grossness_n of_o his_o understanding_n as_o not_o be_v yet_o acquaint_v with_o our_o saviour_n manner_n of_o teach_v he_o its_o likely-thought_a and_o not_o amiss_o that_o our_o saviour_n mean_v it_o of_o some_o more_o unwonted_a thing_n than_o be_v the_o legal_a observation_n or_o any_o thing_n they_o can_v confer_v on_o man_n and_o whether_o it_o may_v be_v some_o strange_a birth_n over_o again_o in_o the_o flesh_n and_o perhaps_o in_o the_o resurrection_n according_a to_o some_o fancy_n of_o the_o platonist_n of_o all_o thing_n after_o some_o long_a period_n of_o time_n to_o be_v act_v over_o again_o as_o before_o he_o may_v not_o know_v nor_o can_v conceive_v how_o a_o man_n can_v be_v bear_v again_o but_o by_o such_o a_o reduction_n to_o his_o first_o entrance_n into_o the_o world_n again_o but_o it_o be_v better_a to_o show_v our_o grossness_n of_o understanding_n and_o inquire_v into_o truth_n propose_v to_o we_o of_o those_o that_o teach_v we_o they_o though_o we_o speak_v like_o fool_n therein_o then_o by_o a_o over-bashfulness_n or_o a_o desire_n to_o be_v think_v wise_a than_o we_o be_v to_o conceal_v our_o doubt_n and_o to_o pretend_v that_o we_o do_v apprehend_v what_o we_o be_v ignorant_a off_o for_o by_o so_o do_v we_o deprive_v ourselves_o of_o the_o help_n and_o instruction_n which_o by_o propound_v our_o doubt_n however_o gross_a and_o ignorant_a our_o propose_v of_o they_o may_v make_v we_o appear_v may_v be_v receive_v and_o sure_a as_o the_o apostle_n thomas_n his_o doubt_v and_o express_v his_o hardness_n to_o believe_v occasion_v a_o more_o full_a demonstration_n of_o the_o reality_n and_o verity_n of_o christ_n resurrection_n to_o the_o great_a benefit_n and_o advantage_n not_o only_o of_o himself_o but_o also_o of_o the_o whole_a church_n in_o the_o present_a and_o follow_a age_n so_o nicodemus_n his_o propose_v his_o doubt_n here_o though_o therein_o show_v the_o grossness_n of_o his_o understanding_n occasion_v and_o receive_v such_o further_a instruction_n into_o the_o nature_n and_o necessity_n of_o regeneration_n as_o tend_v not_o only_o to_o he_o but_o also_o to_o our_o great_a helpfulness_n and_o advantage_n for_o in_o ver_fw-la 5.6_o jesus_n answer_v grace_n and_o love_n of_o god_n hold_v forth_o and_o declare_v in_o the_o say_a knowledge_n word_n or_o doctrine_n the_o water_n in_o the_o word_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d eph._n 5.26_o grace_n be_v pour_v into_o the_o lip_n of_o christ_n psal_n 45.2_o or_o else_o also_o a_o submission_n to_o christ_n in_o receive_v he_o and_o his_o word_n and_o ordinance_n in_o be_v baptize_v into_o his_o and_o the_o salvation_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o if_o he_o perish_v as_o to_o any_o other_o hope_n and_o design_n which_o be_v carnal_a which_o as_o a_o man_n yet_o subject_a to_o infirmity_n and_o in_o many_o thing_n offend_v he_o may_v as_o abraham_n do_v in_o his_o hope_n and_o design_n of_o bring_v about_o god_n promise_n by_o his_o go_v in_o unto_o hagar_n and_o the_o birth_n and_o life_n set_v to_o or_o engage_v in_o the_o matter_n they_o may_v learn_v so_o much_o of_o the_o form_n of_o knowledge_n in_o subserviency_n to_o some_o other_o design_n as_o of_o get_v a_o livelihood_n honour_n and_o respect_n with_o man_n ease_n from_o trouble_n of_o mind_n etc._n etc._n as_o that_o they_o may_v draw_v nigh_o with_o their_o mouth_n and_o honour_v he_o with_o their_o lip_n and_o
