themselves_o to_o take_v another_o body_n delight_n or_o another_o soul_n and_o as_o when_o one_o be_v very_o desirous_a to_o eat_v and_o thereupon_o fall_v asleep_a dream_v that_o he_o be_v feed_v and_o yet_o be_v not_o satisfy_v because_o it_o be_v not_o a_o dream_n of_o meat_n that_o will_v content_v the_o sense_n and_o appetite_n which_o seek_v to_o be_v appease_v but_o substantial_a meat_n itself_o even_o so_o it_o fall_v out_o when_o man_n dream_v in_o spirit_n which_o be_v as_o pernicious_a a_o thing_n as_o the_o sleep_n of_o death_n give_v themselves_o by_o a_o certain_a natural_a itself_o through_o the_o consideration_n and_o opinion_n it_o have_v of_o it_o own_o greatness_n so_o do_v it_o restrain_v and_o close_o up_o itself_o upon_o the_o reputation_n and_o conceit_n of_o another_o man_n greatness_n so_o it_o be_v good_a or_o at_o leastwise_o without_o hurt_n therefore_o if_o we_o compare_v our_o greatness_n with_o some_o other_o man_n that_o be_v far_o great_a we_o know_v our_o own_o smallness_n thereby_o whereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v humility_n that_o we_o do_v not_o only_o esteem_v worse_a but_o even_o dislike_n and_o contemn_v ourselves_o by_o which_o hence_o it_o come_v that_o in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n the_o heart_n be_v take_v for_o the_o fountain_n not_o only_o of_o life_n but_o also_o of_o all_o the_o action_n of_o man_n as_o it_o have_v be_v already_o declare_v unto_o us._n and_o for_o this_o cause_n also_o some_o have_v say_v that_o these_o spirit_n and_o little_a vital_a and_o animal_n flame_n be_v the_o soul_n itself_o or_o the_o immediate_a instrument_n thereof_o that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o very_a next_o whereby_o it_o woork_v immediate_o so_o that_o there_o be_v none_o betwixt_o they_o twain_o soul_n but_o the_o latter_a be_v more_o certain_a and_o more_o agreeable_a to_o truth_n then_o the_o former_a for_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o vital_a and_o animal_n spirit_n it_o shall_v fail_v and_o with_o other_o instrument_n and_o of_o another_o nature_n than_o the_o soul_n of_o beastesmay_n have_v and_o the_o soul_n of_o beast_n another_o then_o the_o soul_n of_o plant_n according_a as_o master_n to_o set_v it_o abroach_o so_o these_o professor_n of_o atheism_n be_v never_o without_o great_a store_n of_o disciple_n because_o after_o this_o manner_n god_n punish_v the_o curiosity_n ingratitude_n and_o perverseness_n of_o man_n the_o contempt_n of_o his_o word_n and_o hatred_n of_o the_o truth_n which_o be_v common_o in_o they_o as_o also_o the_o pleasure_n they_o take_v in_o vanity_n and_o lie_n therefore_o god_n by_o his_o just_a judgement_n give_v they_o over_o into_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n so_o that_o they_o can_v but_o always_o reject_v the_o truth_n and_o embrace_v in_o other_o age_n wherein_o there_o be_v great_a use_n of_o they_o and_o although_o the_o seed_n of_o all_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v include_v within_o it_o even_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o creation_n thereof_o nevertheless_o god_n have_v create_v it_o of_o that_o nature_n that_o as_o he_o have_v join_v it_o to_o the_o body_n which_o have_v his_o degree_n of_o growth_n in_o every_o part_n thereof_o so_o the_o soul_n have_v some_o agreement_n therewith_o in_o this_o respect_n touch_v the_o manifestation_n of_o her_o power_n and_o virtue_n if_o then_o any_o man_n be_v judgement_n be_v to_o like_v or_o dislike_v the_o discourse_n of_o reason_n judgement_n and_o the_o conclusion_n which_o be_v make_v thereby_o for_o it_o belong_v to_o judgement_n to_o judge_v whether_o reason_n discourse_n and_o conclude_v well_o as_o it_o ought_v to_o do_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o mind_n as_o a_o rule_n or_o as_o the_o skole_n in_o a_o pair_n of_o balance_n and_o while_o reason_n be_v a_o work_v it_o be_v quiet_a but_o when_o she_o have_v conclude_v and_o do_v judgement_n afterward_o examine_v and_o consider_v whether_o there_o be_v any_o fault_n in_o the_o discourse_n or_o in_o the_o conclusion_n or_o in_o both_o or_o whether_o all_o be_v well_o refer_v before_o it_o either_o approve_v or_o mislike_v any_o thing_n and_o if_o it_o find_v any_o thing_n that_o breed_v fear_n lest_o it_o be_v deceive_v than_o it_o begin_v again_o to_o advise_v of_o the_o matter_n now_o the_o great_a cause_n it_o have_v to_o fear_v lest_o it_o be_v deceive_v arise_v of_o probable_a reason_n which_o albeit_o they_o be_v like_a to_o be_v true_a yet_o indeed_o be_v not_o true_a and_o because_o there_o be_v some_o which_o have_v such_o great_a show_n of_o truth_n that_o it_o be_v a_o very_a hard_a matter_n to_o be_v able_a to_o discern_v they_o from_o true_a reason_n and_o not_o take_v they_o to_o be_v such_o indeed_o therefore_o be_v not_o lead_v and_o induce_v to_o allow_v or_o disallow_v of_o a_o thing_n either_o by_o virtue_n of_o true_a and_o certain_a reason_n that_o may_v move_v it_o or_o of_o such_o reason_n as_o be_v so_o very_o likely_a and_o carry_v so_o great_a a_o show_n of_o truth_n god_n that_o they_o can_v be_v know_v and_o discern_v for_o other_o therefore_o we_o may_v well_o say_v that_o a_o good_a upright_o and_o sound_o judgement_n be_v a_o excellent_a gift_n of_o god_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o thing_n more_o necessary_a in_o all_o art_n and_o discipline_n yea_o in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o man_n life_n and_o chief_o for_o the_o principal_a end_n of_o our_o be_v which_o be_v to_o know_v and_o to_o serve_v god_n for_o as_o good_a be_v a_o thing_n agreeable_a to_o the_o will_n so_o be_v truth_n agreeable_a to_o the_o mind_n whereupon_o it_o follow_v likewise_o that_o as_o evil_a be_v contrary_a and_o a_o enemy_n to_o the_o will_n so_o be_v lie_v in_o respect_n of_o the_o mind_n wherefore_o if_o judgement_n judge_v that_o the_o conclusion_n make_v by_o reason_n be_v true_a and_o follow_v well_o it_o join_v itself_o thereunto_o receive_v and_o embrace_v it_o as_o agreeable_a to_o itself_o this_o approbation_n be_v call_v consent_n but_o if_o it_o judge_v the_o conclusion_n to_o be_v false_a it_o turn_v aside_o and_o reject_v it_o and_o this_o refusal_n may_v be_v call_v dissent_n because_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o consent_v when_o there_o be_v no_o agreement_n of_o sentence_n consent_n but_o disagreement_n and_o contrariety_n as_o touch_v consent_n we_o may_v divide_v it_o into_o two_o kind_n for_o one_o kind_n thereof_o be_v firm_a and_o steadfast_a and_o another_o weak_a and_o unstayed_a if_o the_o consent_n be_v firm_a certain_a and_o thorough_o of_o consent_n which_o incline_v to_o one_o part_n rather_o than_o to_o another_o

thing_n as_o he_o have_v in_o his_o first_o estate_n it_o be_v necessary_a therefore_o that_o he_o shall_v restore_v and_o kindle_v again_o in_o he_o this_o divine_a and_o perfect_a life_n which_o he_o have_v lose_v by_o the_o benefit_n of_o regeneration_n and_o spiritual_a renovation_n as_o if_o he_o create_v he_o anew_o give_v he_o a_o mind_n to_o understand_v his_o word_n and_o a_o will_v virtue_n and_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n show_v themselves_o by_o little_a and_o little_a and_o by_o degree_n of_o contemplation_n and_o of_o the_o good_a that_o be_v in_o it_o of_o that_o true_a and_o divine_a contemplation_n which_o we_o look_v for_o after_o this_o life_n chap._n 32._o achitob._n i_o be_v much_o trouble_v oftentimes_o about_o the_o understanding_n of_o these_o two_o word_n soul_n and_o spirit_n in_o seek_v to_o find_v what_o difference_n or_o agreement_n they_o have_v one_o with_o another_o see_v that_o many_o time_n i_o see_v one_o of_o they_o take_v for_o the_o other_o and_o also_o oppose_v as_o repugnant_a one_o to_o another_o spirit_n in_o the_o end_n i_o learn_v of_o skilful_a man_n that_o we_o may_v use_v the_o word_n soul_n to_o signify_v man_n as_o he_o be_v bear_v have_v only_o the_o gift_n of_o a_o humane_a soul_n namely_o the_o humane_a sense_n and_o those_o other_o power_n and_o virtue_n both_o animal_n and_o natural_a of_o which_o we_o have_v already_o speak_v and_o as_o for_o the_o spirit_n that_o we_o must_v understand_v thereby_o whatsoever_o heavenly_a grace_n and_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n be_v give_v to_o man_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n dwell_v in_o he_o which_o guide_v and_o lead_v he_o to_o the_o contemplation_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n wherein_o consist_v his_o good_a and_o felicity_n moreover_o we_o may_v see_v in_o sundry_a place_n of_o the_o scripture_n according_a to_o the_o hebrew_n phrase_n 6._o the_o word_n soul_n take_v not_o only_o for_o the_o life_n of_o man_n and_o for_o all_o thing_n come_v forth_o increase_a daily_o until_o it_o come_v to_o those_o bound_n that_o be_v allot_v unto_o it_o by_o the_o creator_n which_o it_o can_v not_o pass_v because_o it_o can_v not_o attain_v to_o childhood_n adolescency_n youth_n man_n estate_n and_o then_o old-age_n we_o see_v how_o small_a his_o beginning_n be_v and_o how_o he_o grow_v step_n by_o step_n and_o from_o age_n to_o age_n until_o he_o come_v to_o the_o flower_n of_o his_o age_n and_o to_o his_o full_a strength_n as_o plant_n do_v and_o from_o thence_o the_o near_a he_o draw_v to_o old-age_n the_o more_o he_o fade_v and_o decay_v until_o he_o come_v to_o death_n whereby_o the_o body_n return_v to_o the_o element_n out_o of_o which_o it_o be_v take_v for_o as_o god_n have_v give_v he_o a_o beginning_n so_o have_v he_o be_v no_o cloud_n of_o ignorance_n when_o we_o shall_v have_v not_o a_o likely_a or_o probable_a but_o a_o most_o certain_a and_o true_a knowledge_n for_o the_o truth_n shall_v be_v show_v unto_o we_o most_o certain_a in_o god_n who_o be_v the_o author_n and_o father_n thereof_o in_o who_o we_o shall_v thorough_o and_o perfect_o see_v and_o know_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n for_o our_o common_o make_v of_o the_o active_a and_o contemplative_a life_n we_o note_v that_o although_o the_o spirit_n desire_v above_o all_o thing_n the_o pleasure_n that_o be_v in_o contemplation_n as_o the_o proper_a food_n and_o delight_n thereof_o yet_o we_o must_v always_o consider_v that_o we_o be_v not_o only_o bear_v for_o ourselves_o but_o also_o for_o other_o and_o to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o shall_v all_o in_o common_a serve_v one_o a_o other_o both_o general_o and_o special_o for_o god_n do_v not_o only_o command_v the_o performance_n of_o that_o service_n which_o he_o require_v of_o we_o towards_o his_o own_o person_n according_a to_o that_o which_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o first_o table_n of_o the_o law_n but_o he_o command_v we_o also_o in_o the_o second_o table_n to_o do_v that_o which_o he_o require_v of_o we_o towards_o other_o man_n contemplaive_n therefore_o he_o will_v not_o have_v we_o dwell_v always_o in_o contemplation_n but_o we_o must_v put_v to_o our_o hand_n and_o discharge_v we_o of_o our_o duty_n towards_o every_o one_o according_a as_o he_o teach_v we_o by_o his_o word_n we_o be_v then_o to_o learn_v that_o so_o long_o as_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n we_o must_v not_o separate_v the_o active_a life_n from_o the_o contemplative_a but_o always_o join_v they_o both_o together_o until_o we_o come_v to_o that_o bless_a life_n which_o shall_v be_v altogether_o contemplative_a when_o we_o shall_v be_v deliver_v from_o all_o the_o misery_n and_o necessity_n and_o from_o all_o the_o trouble_n &_o let_v in_o which_o we_o be_v wrap_v and_o detain_v in_o this_o mortal_a life_n god_n grant_v we_o his_o grace_n to_o use_v all_o our_o sense_n so_o well_o both_o external_a and_o internal_a and_o all_o the_o power_n faculty_n and_o virtue_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o spirit_n of_o which_o we_o have_v hitherto_o speak_v that_o we_o may_v cause_v they_o all_o to_o serve_v to_o his_o glory_n and_o that_o we_o may_v attain_v to_o appetite_n that_o be_v natural_o in_o man_n see_v desire_n be_v the_o proper_a subject_n of_o the_o will_n as_o thou_o shall_v instruct_v we_o more_o at_o large_a the_o end_n of_o the_o four_o day_n between_o god_n and_o man_n be_v whole_o pervert_v and_o overthrow_v nature_n for_o in_o place_n of_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o god_n there_o be_v nothing_o but_o ignorance_n and_o doubt_v in_o our_o mind_n and_o as_o for_o the_o will_n it_o search_v after_o and_o desire_v other_o thing_n whereunto_o it_o apply_v itself_o and_o seek_v not_o after_o god_n neither_o do_v it_o keep_v any_o order_n in_o those_o thing_n which_o it_o have_v for_o object_n and_o which_o it_o set_v down_o in_o stead_n of_o the_o thing_n command_v in_o his_o word_n so_o that_o while_o it_o think_v to_o attain_v to_o that_o good_a whereunto_o natural_o it_o aspire_v it_o obtain_v nothing_o to_o itself_o but_o a_o very_a great_a evil_n now_o when_o we_o speak_v before_o of_o the_o brain_n and_o of_o the_o internal_a sense_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o of_o the_o principal_a part_n and_o virtue_n thereof_o we_o make_v some_o mention_n of_o the_o will_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v direct_v and_o lead_v by_o understanding_n and_o reason_n it_o remain_v now_o that_o we_o look_v more_o narrow_o into_o the_o nature_n thereof_o and_o of_o the_o affection_n of_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o vital_a virtue_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o of_o other_o member_n which_o be_v the_o seat_n and_o instrument_n thereof_o even_o as_o when_o we_o entreat_v of_o the_o animal_n virtue_n of_o the_o soul_n we_o consider_v of_o their_o seat_n and_o instrument_n first_o then_o we_o must_v mark_v what_o have_v be_v hitherto_o speak_v namely_o that_o god_n have_v give_v to_o all_o his_o creature_n a_o natural_a inclination_n that_o lead_v every_o one_o of_o they_o to_o that_o which_o be_v natural_a and_o agreeable_a to_o itself_o creature_n beast_n have_v a_o appetite_n to_o follow_v that_o good_a that_o be_v fit_n for_o they_o and_o therefore_o also_o have_v god_n give_v they_o the_o knowledge_n of_o that_o good_a and_o sense_n meet_v for_o that_o purpose_n to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v show_v unto_o they_o what_o be_v good_a for_o their_o preservation_n to_o follow_v it_o and_o to_o shun_v the_o contrary_n we_o have_v learn_v also_o how_o god_n have_v give_v both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o to_o man_n and_o unto_o what_o degree_n concern_v both_o of_o they_o he_o have_v lift_v he_o up_o above_o all_o live_a creature_n for_o as_o he_o have_v create_v he_o to_o enjoy_v a_o far_o great_a and_o more_o excellent_a good_a than_o he_o have_v beast_n and_o have_v give_v unto_o he_o a_o will_v to_o wish_v and_o desire_v it_o so_o he_o have_v endue_v he_o with_o a_o deep_a knowledge_n whereby_o to_o know_v that_o good_a because_o he_o can_v not_o wish_v for_o it_o and_o desire_v it_o except_o he_o do_v know_v it_o and_o he_o can_v not_o know_v it_o if_o he_o have_v not_o a_o mind_n capable_a thereof_o and_o endue_v with_o great_a knowledge_n than_o that_o be_v which_o he_o have_v give_v to_o beast_n for_o this_o cause_n as_o they_o have_v a_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n agreeable_a to_o their_o nature_n and_o to_o the_o
of_o the_o affection_n it_o be_v necessary_a they_o shall_v agree_v together_o for_o as_o reason_n guide_v before_o the_o affection_n will_v follow_v after_o therefore_o we_o may_v always_o judge_v of_o reason_n by_o the_o affection_n which_o it_o ought_v to_o govern_v as_o of_o the_o government_n of_o a_o good_a prince_n by_o the_o estate_n of_o his_o subject_n &_o of_o a_o good_a father_n of_o a_o family_n by_o those_o of_o his_o household_n 40._o moreover_o see_v the_o affection_n proceed_v from_o the_o heart_n there_o be_v the_o seat_n of_o that_o love_n which_o we_o ought_v to_o bear_v as_o well_o towards_o god_n as_o towards_o man_n which_o comprehend_v the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n and_o all_o justice_n for_o he_o that_o love_v god_n be_v not_o only_o afraid_a to_o offend_v and_o displease_v he_o but_o desire_v also_o to_o serve_v &_o please_v he_o and_o he_o that_o love_v his_o neighbour_n do_v not_o only_o abstain_v from_o procure_v he_o any_o dishonour_n or_o loss_n but_o labour_v also_o to_o advance_v his_o honour_n and_o profit_n therefore_o if_o the_o mind_n be_v lighten_v and_o inflame_v with_o divine_a light_n and_o the_o reason_n also_o that_o rule_v therein_o than_o the_o heart_n will_v wax_v hot_a and_o burn_v with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o neighbour_n heart_n which_o if_o it_o fall_v out_o so_o the_o heart_n will_v not_o be_v slack_a in_o show_v forth_o those_o heavenly_a motion_n that_o be_v within_o it_o &_o in_o give_v matter_n to_o the_o soul_n to_o glorify_v god_n and_o to_o the_o tongue_n and_o mouth_n which_o will_v speak_v out_o of_o the_o abundance_n thereof_o likewise_o there_o will_v be_v a_o accord_n and_o consent_n between_o it_o and_o the_o voice_n and_o tongue_n which_o then_o will_v utter_v nothing_o but_o the_o truth_n and_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o that_o which_o we_o be_v teach_v before_o namely_o that_o god_n by_o his_o providence_n and_o wise_a counsel_n have_v join_v near_o unto_o the_o heart_n the_o chief_a instrument_n of_o the_o voice_n which_o be_v the_o lung_n as_o the_o other_o instrument_n that_o be_v high_o be_v lodge_v near_o to_o the_o brain_n and_o chief_o the_o tongue_n as_o the_o orator_n and_o ambassador_n of_o king_n be_v place_v next_o unto_o they_o wherefore_o if_o man_n nature_n have_v not_o be_v corrupt_v through_o sin_n but_o have_v continue_v perfect_a and_o sound_a there_o will_v always_o have_v be_v a_o goodly_a concord_n and_o consent_n between_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o brain_n the_o voice_n and_o the_o tongue_n the_o reason_n and_o the_o affection_n reason_n next_o we_o must_v note_v that_o see_v the_o heart_n be_v the_o first_o member_n of_o the_o whole_a body_n that_o receive_v life_n and_o they_o give_v the_o same_o to_o other_o as_o also_o the_o last_o that_o leave_v life_n and_o see_v it_o be_v the_o shop_n of_o all_o the_o vital_a spirit_n without_o which_o neither_o the_o brain_n nor_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o member_n can_v have_v life_n or_o perforume_n their_o duty_n it_o be_v not_o without_o cause_n that_o this_o member_n be_v take_v to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o seat_n not_o only_o of_o the_o affection_n but_o also_o of_o reason_n therefore_o it_o be_v take_v in_o the_o scripture_n one_o while_n for_o the_o mind_n as_o when_o moses_n say_v to_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n 4._o yet_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o give_v you_o a_o heart_n to_o know_v and_o another_o while_o it_o be_v take_v for_o the_o affection_n as_o when_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v 37._o thou_o shall_v love_v the_o lord_n thy_o god_n with_o all_o thy_o heart_n with_o all_o thy_o soul_n and_o with_o all_o thy_o mind_n for_o we_o see_v here_o how_o he_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o mind_n sometime_o they_o be_v put_v indifferent_o one_o for_o another_o or_o one_o for_o both_o especial_o the_o heart_n as_o when_o the_o lord_n say_v to_o solomon_n 12._o behold_v i_o have_v give_v thou_o a_o wise_a and_o a_o understanding_n heart_n the_o heart_n be_v take_v for_o the_o sense_n and_o mind_n as_o it_o appear_v very_o evident_o for_o the_o same_o cause_n saint_n paul_n continue_v his_o speech_n of_o god_n punishment_n above_o mention_v against_o the_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n of_o man_n he_o add_v to_o that_o before_o recite_v this_o say_n 25._o wherefore_o also_o god_n give_v they_o up_o to_o their_o heart_n lust_n unto_o uncleanness_n to_o defile_v their_o own_o body_n between_o themselves_o which_o turn_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n unto_o a_o lie_n in_o which_o place_n we_o see_v note_v this_o that_o the_o natural_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n which_o prick_v it_o forward_o to_o the_o desire_n of_o pleasure_n and_o which_o minister_n pleasure_n unto_o it_o god_n shall_v be_v no_o sin_n at_o all_o unto_o man_n but_o a_o benefit_n give_v they_o of_o god_n in_o the_o perfection_n of_o their_o nature_n be_v it_o not_o that_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o corruption_n which_o hurtful_a unto_o they_o now_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o order_n of_o our_o discourse_n have_v bring_v we_o to_o the_o tractate_n of_o affection_n which_o have_v their_o seat_n in_o the_o heart_n before_o we_o go_v any_o further_a we_o must_v say_v somewhat_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o this_o part_n of_o the_o body_n as_o we_o have_v do_v of_o the_o brain_n to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v the_o better_o know_v the_o seat_n and_o instrument_n of_o the_o vital_a power_n and_o virtue_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o of_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n as_o those_o which_o belong_v to_o the_o animal_n power_n and_o virtue_n have_v be_v declare_v unto_o us._n let_v we_o then_o hear_v as_a handle_v this_o matter_n of_o the_o nature_n and_o composition_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o of_o the_o midriff_n of_o the_o tunicle_n or_o skinny_a cover_n of_o the_o breast_n and_o of_o the_o pericardion_fw-la or_o cawl_n about_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o motion_n office_n and_o use_v of_o the_o lung_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o of_o the_o artery_n chap._n 37._o aser._n it_o be_v not_o without_o good_a and_o just_a cause_n that_o god_n have_v ordain_v that_o reason_n shall_v lodge_v in_o the_o high_a part_n of_o the_o frame_n of_o man_n and_o that_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n shall_v lodge_v low_a namely_o in_o the_o heart_n for_o by_o this_o order_n he_o will_v admonish_v and_o tell_v we_o what_o part_n and_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n ought_v to_o bear_v great_a sway_n therein_o and_o that_o understanding_n and_o wisdom_n which_o teach_v we_o the_o true_a rule_n according_a to_o which_o we_o must_v square_v our_o whole_a life_n aught_o to_o reign_v and_o have_v the_o first_o place_n creation_n see_v the_o principal_a cause_n wherefore_o god_n have_v create_v we_o be_v to_o know_v he_o to_o the_o end_n that_o know_v he_o we_o shall_v love_v and_o honour_v he_o as_o we_o ought_v and_o as_o for_o the_o affection_n they_o be_v to_o be_v 〈◊〉_d and_o govern_v by_o wisdom_n and_o understanding_n wherefore_o if_o this_o order_n appoint_v by_o god_n be_v confound_v and_o turn_v topsy_n turuy_o in_o we_o he_o cause_v we_o to_o feel_v and_o know_v it_o well_o enough_o for_o although_o sin_n be_v the_o cause_n yet_o the_o impression_n of_o that_o divine_a image_n which_o god_n have_v set_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n can_v be_v so_o whole_o deface_v in_o we_o but_o there_o will_v always_o remain_v very_o evident_a and_o wonderful_a testimony_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o present_o after_o we_o have_v overthrow_v this_o order_n and_o that_o the_o will_n lift_v herself_o up_o against_o reason_n even_o than_o do_v reason_n condemn_v that_o fault_n of_o she_o and_o compel_v the_o heart_n to_o take_v vengeance_n thereof_o and_o to_o punish_v in_o it_o herself_o disobedience_n and_o rebellion_n
and_o evil_a to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o the_o action_n thereof_o may_v agree_v with_o these_o rule_n which_o be_v the_o beam_n of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n in_o ourselves_o for_o it_o be_v a_o order_n which_o god_n have_v so_o ordain_v &_o establish_v soul_n and_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o dwell_v in_o the_o body_n god_n give_v unto_o it_o this_o natural_a power_n of_o the_o affection_n that_o it_o may_v be_v waken_v and_o stir_v up_o by_o they_o as_o it_o be_v with_o prick_v thereby_o to_o be_v keep_v from_o idleness_n and_o from_o be_v lull_v asleep_a and_o oppress_v with_o the_o heaviness_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o neglect_v all_o care_n of_o good_a thing_n &_o of_o that_o which_o be_v very_o expedient_a &_o profitable_a for_o itself_o for_o this_o cause_n the_o soul_n have_v her_o affection_n of_o which_o some_o serve_v for_o spur_n to_o prick_v she_o hither_o &_o thither_o &_o as_o often_o as_o need_n require_v other_o serve_v for_o a_o bridle_n to_o keep_v her_o back_n &_o to_o stay_v she_o from_o rush_v unto_o evil_n &_o from_o follow_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v hurtful_a for_o she_o and_o indeed_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o such_o spurte_n and_o bridle_n but_o herein_o we_o err_v great_o in_o that_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o keep_v a_o moderation_n between_o these_o twain_o for_o because_o we_o make_v these_o spur_n too_o sharp_a and_o prick_v the_o horse_n too_o much_o which_o we_o have_v to_o guide_v the_o bridle_n on_o the_o other_o side_n be_v two_o grievous_a unto_o he_o so_o that_o he_o lift_v up_o and_o gird_v forward_o over_o furious_o and_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v because_o we_o do_v not_o content_v ourselves_o with_o that_o which_o be_v requisite_a for_o the_o succour_v of_o our_o natural_a necessity_n but_o we_o add_v there_o unto_o infinite_a superfluity_n for_o upon_o some_o light_a necessity_n that_o may_v soon_o be_v dispatch_v we_o torment_v ourselves_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o than_o need_n be_v because_o we_o persuade_v ourselves_o that_o our_o necessity_n be_v great_a than_o they_o be_v and_o so_o seek_v after_o more_o remedy_n and_o help_n than_o be_v requisite_a of_o this_o we_o have_v daily_a experience_n in_o that_o care_n which_o we_o take_v for_o thing_n necessary_a for_o this_o life_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o we_o burn_v continual_o with_o insatiable_a covetousness_n which_o be_v such_o a_o marvelous_a spur_n unto_o we_o that_o we_o take_v very_o little_a rest_n for_o it_o for_o if_o we_o will_v be_v content_v with_o enough_o it_o will_v not_o put_v we_o to_o that_o torment_n which_o we_o daily_o suffer_v wind_n but_o nothing_o suffice_v we_o and_o therefore_o the_o affection_n be_v in_o our_o soul_n as_o the_o wind_n upon_o the_o sea_n for_o some_o wind_n be_v very_o small_a and_o move_v the_o water_n but_o a_o little_a other_o be_v more_o vehement_a and_o raise_v up_o certain_a wave_n and_o some_o again_o be_v so_o tempestuous_a and_o make_v such_o horrible_a storm_n and_o gust_n whereby_o the_o sea_n be_v so_o move_v that_o sea_n and_o sand_n and_o fish_n and_o all_o seem_v to_o be_v turn_v topsy_n toruie_o the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v of_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o some_o be_v so_o light_a that_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o small_a beginning_n of_o move_v there_o be_v other_o strong_a which_v move_v it_o somewhat_o more_o and_o some_o also_o be_v so_o violent_a that_o they_o altogether_o trouble_v the_o soul_n even_o in_o such_o a_o vehement_a manner_n that_o they_o drive_v she_o from_o her_o seat_n of_o judgement_n therefore_o these_o two_o first_o kind_n of_o motion_n be_v proper_o call_v affection_n and_o the_o other_o that_o be_v so_o violent_a be_v term_v commotion_n and_o perturbation_n perturbation_n for_o they_o bring_v a_o kind_n of_o blindness_n with_o they_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o judgement_n and_o reason_n see_v never_o a_o whit_n whereupon_o it_o follow_v see_v neither_o reason_n nor_o judgement_n bear_v any_o more_o rule_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v as_o if_o she_o have_v no_o more_o power_n over_o herself_o but_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o jurisdiction_n of_o some_o other_o the_o grecian_n term_v such_o affection_n with_o a_o word_n that_o signify_v as_o much_o as_o if_o we_o shall_v say_v passion_n and_o in_o deed_n we_o common_o say_v that_o a_o man_n be_v passionate_a when_o he_o be_v torment_v by_o such_o violent_a affection_n for_o as_o the_o whole_a body_n suffer_v when_o it_o be_v move_v or_o thrust_v too_o and_o fro_o and_o strike_v on_o every_o side_n so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o soul_n beeng_v violent_o move_v every_o way_n and_o as_o the_o move_n be_v more_o or_o less_o moderate_a so_o she_o suffer_v more_o or_o less_o and_o if_o the_o motion_n be_v very_o violent_a confusion_n follow_v thereupon_o now_o for_o the_o sequel_n of_o this_o speech_n let_v we_o consider_v how_o the_o affection_n be_v more_o or_o less_o moderate_a according_a to_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o judgement_n and_o what_o be_v the_o spring_n and_o original_n of_o so_o many_o sundry_a affection_n as_o we_o see_v in_o man_n it_o belong_v then_o to_o thou_o aram_n to_o handle_v this_o matter_n that_o according_a to_o the_o dispposition_n of_o the_o judgement_n the_o affection_n be_v more_o or_o less_o moderate_a or_o immoderate_a of_o the_o cause_n of_o all_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o heart_n of_o the_o variety_n of_o affection_n of_o the_o generation_n nature_n and_o kind_n of_o they_o chap._n 43._o aram._n whatsoever_o we_o do_v or_o wish_v for_o we_o do_v or_o desire_v it_o for_o some_o good_a whether_o that_o which_o we_o judge_v to_o be_v good_a be_v so_o in_o truth_n or_o in_o opinion_n only_o and_o therein_o we_o resemble_v god_n our_o creator_n who_o be_v not_o only_o good_a but_o also_o goodness_n itself_o even_o the_o perfection_n of_o all_o good_a wherefore_o if_o we_o desire_v to_o know_v what_o be_v the_o true_a good_a we_o must_v understand_v that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o only_a true_a good_a even_o the_o same_o by_o participation_n of_o which_o we_o be_v first_o make_v good_a and_o then_o of_o good_a most_o happy_a for_o we_o can_v be_v happy_a and_o bless_a which_o be_v the_o end_n we_o all_o look_v for_o but_o we_o must_v first_o become_v good_a for_o as_o there_o be_v no_o true_a felicity_n and_o blessedness_n but_o in_o good_a be_v the_o source_n and_o fountain_n yea_o the_o perfection_n of_o all_o happiness_n and_o contentation_n so_o also_o there_o be_v no_o felicity_n nor_o bless_v due_n but_o in_o goodness_n which_o be_v as_o proper_a to_o god_n as_o his_o very_a divinity_n because_o that_o as_o he_o can_v be_v god_n except_o he_o be_v good_a so_o he_o can_v be_v good_a with_o that_o goodness_n that_o be_v in_o he_o but_o he_o must_v be_v god_n and_o as_o he_o be_v the_o essence_n of_o all_o essence_n so_o he_o be_v the_o essential_a good_a and_o the_o essential_a goodness_n of_o all_o good_n and_o of_o all_o goodness_n but_o although_o our_o nature_n do_v of_o itself_o always_o tend_v to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a as_o we_o have_v show_v in_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o chief_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n understanding_n and_o will_v nevertheless_o we_o differ_v much_o nay_o we_o be_v clean_o contrary_a to_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o election_n of_o good_a because_o of_o the_o bad_a judgement_n we_o have_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o darkness_n of_o ignorance_n wherewith_o our_o mind_n be_v blind_v hereof_o it_o come_v that_o the_o more_o the_o judgement_n be_v corrupt_v infect_a and_o deep_o plunge_v in_o the_o flesh_n affection_n the_o more_o evil_a and_o carnal_a be_v the_o affection_n the_o more_o in_o number_n and_o the_o more_o violent_a yea_o such_o as_o do_v not_o only_o trouble_v and_o pervert_v the_o internal_a sense_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o the_o external_a sense_n also_o of_o the_o body_n this_o we_o may_v observe_v in_o they_o that_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o love_n who_o think_v oftentimes_o and_o be_v very_o persuade_v that_o they_o see_v and_o hear_v those_o thing_n which_o indeed_o be_v nothing_o so_o contrariwise_o the_o pure_a the_o judgement_n be_v and_o the_o high_a it_o be_v lift_v up_o from_o the_o flesh_n and_o from_o the_o earth_n the_o feweâ—_n and_o light_a be_v the_o affection_n which_o trouble_n and_o molest_v it_o for_o than_o it_o take_v great_a heed_n and_o mark_v what_o truth_n or_o what_o falsehood_n what_o good_a or_o what_o evil_n there_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n whereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o judgement_n be_v not_o so_o often_o nor_o so_o easy_o move_v and_o when_o it_o be_v move_v it_o be_v not_o so_o violent_a nor_o heady_a but_o more_o man_n show_v we_o the_o goodly_a work_v that_o can_v be_v either_o of_o gold_n or_o of_o silver_n or_o picture_n or_o garment_n or_o house_n as_o curious_o wrought_v as_o can_v be_v devise_v either_o for_o beauty_n or_o cost_n yet_o when_o we_o have_v see_v they_o four_o or_o five_o time_n we_o begin_v to_o be_v full_a of_o it_o and_o take_v not_o so_o great_a pleasure_n therein_o as_o we_o do_v work_v to_o those_o that_o be_v supernatural_a and_o above_o the_o reach_n of_o nature_n we_o shall_v find_v in_o they_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o matter_n of_o all_o kind_n of_o delight_n delight_n for_o if_o we_o can_v consider_v aright_o of_o these_o thing_n we_o will_v ascend_v up_o from_o artificial_a thing_n and_o from_o that_o delight_n which_o they_o afford_v we_o even_o unto_o natural_a thing_n and_o from_o these_o unto_o the_o author_n and_o creator_n of_o they_o and_o of_o all_o nature_n and_o there_o we_o will_v seek_v for_o our_o true_a delight_n and_o pleasure_n herein_o nature_n herself_o be_v our_o good_a mistress_n as_o she_o that_o lead_v we_o thereunto_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o hand_n but_o our_o inconsiderateness_n our_o blockishness_n and_o ingratitude_n be_v the_o cause_n why_o we_o can_v learn_v this_o lesson_n of_o she_o and_o why_o we_o have_v not_o the_o marvelous_a and_o excellent_a work_n of_o god_n and_o nature_n in_o such_o due_a admiration_n as_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v whereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v also_o that_o we_o take_v not_o so_o great_a delight_n and_o pleasure_n in_o they_o and_o that_o custom_n which_o ought_v to_o increase_v this_o delight_n in_o we_o be_v a_o mean_a rather_o to_o diminish_v the_o same_o and_o by_o this_o mean_n also_o we_o be_v keep_v from_o that_o admiration_n which_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v of_o god_n the_o woorkemaster_n of_o they_o and_o of_o that_o delight_n and_o pleasure_n which_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o he_o if_o we_o mount_v up_o so_o high_a and_o seek_v he_o there_o but_o because_o we_o be_v always_o muse_v about_o vile_a and_o abject_a thing_n we_o have_v no_o leisure_n to_o consider_v of_o and_o to_o contemplate_v high_a and_o more_o wonder_a thing_n now_o to_o end_v this_o day_n which_o we_o may_v find_v in_o he_o let_v we_o know_v that_o we_o have_v good_a occasion_n to_o pray_v unto_o he_o incessant_o that_o he_o will_v vouchsafe_v so_o to_o lighten_v our_o sense_n and_o mind_n and_o to_o rule_v all_o our_o affection_n and_o will_n in_o such_o sort_n that_o we_o may_v at_o the_o length_n attain_v thereunto_o for_o than_o we_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v deliver_v from_o all_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n but_o have_v the_o full_a fruition_n of_o perfect_a joy_n and_o perpetual_a delight_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v go_v forward_o to_o morrow_n with_o our_o motion_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o will_n have_v even_o then_o join_v with_o it_o a_o certain_a kind_n of_o rejoice_v as_o testify_v thereby_o that_o the_o thing_n please_v it_o and_o be_v very_o from_o all_o evil_n that_o may_v hurt_v he_o to_o flee_v from_o it_o and_o to_o repel_v it_o 9_o as_o be_v contrary_a unto_o he_o 15._o therefore_o saint_n paul_n say_v hate_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o cleave_v to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a for_o true_a and_o perfect_a hatred_n shall_v hate_v nothing_o but_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a indeed_o as_o true_a love_n shall_v love_v that_o vice_n of_o our_o friend_n and_o kinsman_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v suffer_v or_o bear_v withal_o it_o seem_v that_o this_o toleration_n proceed_v from_o the_o love_n we_o bear_v either_o to_o see_v god_n offend_v now_o as_o concern_v envy_n enuy._n that_o always_o accompany_v hatred_n it_o be_v a_o affection_n quite_o contrary_a to_o mercy_n which_o be_v a_o sorrow_n conceive_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o misery_n of_o a_o other_o whereas_o envy_n be_v a_o grief_n arise_v of_o other_o man_n felicity_n therefore_o it_o do_v natural_o rejoice_v at_o another_o man_n harm_n enuy._n and_o be_v grieve_v at_o his_o good_a so_o that_o according_a to_o the_o variety_n of_o good_a thing_n that_o may_v befall_v other_o man_n so_o there_o be_v diverse_a kind_n of_o enuy._n for_o first_o some_o be_v envious_a when_o other_o man_n profit_n be_v so_o great_a that_o it_o hinder_v they_o there_o be_v also_o a_o kind_n of_o envy_n at_o the_o welfare_n of_o another_o which_o albeit_o it_o neither_o hurt_n nor_o hinder_v we_o yet_o we_o be_v grieve_v because_o the_o like_a be_v not_o befall_v to_o we_o or_o not_o rather_o to_o we_o or_o not_o aswell_o to_o we_o as_o to_o another_o to_o shall_v enjoy_v but_o do_v not_o or_o which_o we_o think_v belong_v to_o we_o but_o be_v bestow_v upon_o other_o then_o be_v our_o envy_n great_a and_o may_v also_o be_v call_v jealousy_n moreover_o there_o be_v a_o four_o kind_n that_o be_v worst_a of_o all_o to_o which_o the_o name_n of_o envy_n agree_v more_o proper_o as_o be_v often_o breed_v of_o the_o former_a kind_n when_o a_o man_n give_v they_o the_o bridle_n and_o suffer_v they_o to_o reign_v too_o much_o over_o he_o this_o envy_n be_v a_o grief_n conceive_v at_o another_o good_a without_o any_o regard_n of_o it_o own_o profit_n but_o only_o because_o it_o judge_v itself_o hurt_v when_o other_o receive_v good_a or_o do_v good_a and_o this_o be_v the_o very_a envy_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o of_o his_o child_n which_o be_v a_o affection_n that_o be_v mingle_v of_o hatred_n and_o of_o joy_n for_o it_o hate_v virtue_n and_o rejoice_v at_o vice_n and_o at_o the_o prosperity_n of_o the_o wicked_a contrariwise_o it_o be_v grieve_v at_o the_o felicity_n of_o good_a man_n and_o glad_a of_o their_o misery_n but_o what_o kind_n soever_o of_o envy_n be_v in_o a_o man_n there_o be_v in_o he_o grief_n and_o as_o it_o be_v a_o bite_a that_o gnaw_v he_o by_o reason_n that_o the_o heart_n in_o this_o affection_n shrink_v in_o as_o it_o be_v and_o close_v up_o itself_o at_o the_o good_a and_o benefit_n of_o another_o grief_n insomuch_o that_o it_o be_v more_o move_v at_o the_o good_a renoun_n honour_n and_o praise_v give_v to_o man_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o they_o
the_o original_n of_o sin_n and_o he_o that_o have_v it_o shall_v pour_v out_o abomination_n till_o at_o last_o he_o be_v overthrow_v and_o a_o little_a after_o pride_n be_v not_o create_v in_o man_n neither_o wrath_n in_o the_o generation_n of_o woman_n and_o indeed_o god_n have_v make_v man_n of_o a_o mild_a and_o communicable_a nature_n apt_a to_o society_n and_o to_o live_v with_o company_n not_o solitary_o as_o savage_a beast_n use_v to_o do_v pride_n therefore_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o contrary_a to_o his_o nature_n and_o to_o that_o end_n for_o which_o he_o be_v create_v than_o and_o resurrection_n thereof_o by_o a_o spiritual_a body_n he_o understand_v not_o only_o such_o a_o body_n as_o man_n have_v that_o be_v already_o regenerate_v in_o this_o life_n but_o also_o such_o a_o one_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v after_o the_o resurrection_n when_o it_o shall_v be_v full_o regenerate_v and_o make_v immortal_a and_o like_a to_o the_o glorious_a body_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o beside_o the_o humane_a soul_n wherewith_o it_o live_v here_o and_o in_o regard_n of_o which_o saint_n paul_n call_v it_o natural_a it_o shall_v have_v also_o a_o divine_a virtue_n that_o shall_v
