exercise_n for_o too_o few_o god_n know_v will_v some_o say_v be_v religious_o exercise_v to_o which_o i_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a that_o very_o few_o be_v religious_o exercise_v if_o we_o speak_v of_o religion_n and_o religious_a exercise_n as_o they_o be_v in_o truth_n and_o indeed_o in_o the_o account_n of_o almighty_a god_n who_o be_v that_o true_a kardiognostes_n and_o searcher_n of_o the_o heart_n nor_o be_v any_o deceive_v with_o the_o truth_n of_o religion_n for_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o god_n in_o man_n conform_v man_n to_o his_o own_o image_n of_o righteousness_n and_o true_a holiness_n now_o god_n can_v deceive_v but_o that_o there_o be_v a_o exercise_n of_o religion_n seem_v true_a which_o become_v the_o strong_a deceiver_n and_o most_o mystical_a deluder_n of_o our_o happiness_n be_v the_o proposition_n that_o be_v affirm_v and_o remain_v to_o be_v prove_v let_v we_o now_o come_v to_o the_o proof_n of_o
this_o point_n consider_v it_o first_o in_o the_o rude_a and_o sensual_a multitude_n and_o then_o in_o the_o more_o seem_a religious_a and_o we_o shall_v evident_o perceive_v that_o the_o religious_a exercise_n of_o man_n do_v most_o strong_o deceive_v and_o delude_v the_o heart_n of_o happiness_n the_o rude_a multitude_n of_o sensual_a liver_n who_o belly_n be_v their_o best_a god_n &_o which_o in_o truth_n of_o heart_n do_v no_o sacrifice_n but_o to_o bacchus_n apollo_n or_o venus_n etc._n etc._n these_o i_o say_v be_v not_o so_o much_o deceive_v of_o heart_n happiness_n by_o their_o sensual_a exercise_n though_o by_o they_o they_o be_v hinder_v as_o they_o be_v by_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o religion_n such_o as_o it_o be_v better_a or_o worse_o for_o in_o that_o they_o have_v the_o name_n of_o christian_n put_v upon_o they_o in_o baptism_n and_o for_o as_o much_o as_o they_o do_v often_o repeat_v the_o lord_n prayer_n the_o apostle_n creed_n and_o the_o ten_o commandment_n and_o in_o that_o they_o come_v sometime_o to_o divine_a service_n and_o to_o hear_v a_o preach_n upon_o god_n good_a sunday_n as_o they_o say_v and_o see_v that_o at_o easter_n they_o do_v receive_v their_o riteing_n or_o the_o lord_n supper_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o these_o people_n will_v not_o be_v persuade_v but_o that_o their_o condition_n be_v most_o happy_a and_o he_o have_v after_o some_o drunken_a fit_n or_o after_o some_o fearful_a blasphemous_a oath_n any_o inward_a dejection_n of_o spirit_n though_o far_o short_a of_o ahab_n both_o in_o nature_n and_o time_n than_o they_o conclude_v themselves_o very_o penitent_a person_n and_o thus_o they_o set_v up_o themselves_o in_o their_o religious_a condition_n as_o well_o may_v a_o man_n persuade_v these_o man_n that_o they_o be_v not_o man_n as_o persuade_v they_o that_o they_o be_v not_o true_a believer_n and_o in_o a_o most_o happy_a condition_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o persuade_v these_o man_n that_o they_o be_v irreligious_a and_o unbelieving_a and_o that_o they_o be_v of_o their_o father_n the_o devil_n who_o work_n they_o do_v than_o be_v they_o in_o the_o way_n towards_o happiness_n but_o the_o first_o be_v not_o likely_a therefore_o not_o the_o second_o thus_o in_o the_o very_a rude_a multitude_n we_o see_v that_o religious_a exercise_n do_v most_o strong_o deceive_v it_o be_v the_o thing_n which_o concern_v their_o peace_n the_o pharisee_n have_v a_o good_a opinion_n of_o their_o religion_n as_o be_v plain_a in_o he_o that_o will_v give_v god_n thanks_o that_o he_o be_v not_o as_o other_o man_n be_v and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o they_o receive_v not_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o peace_n without_o which_o no_o true_a peace_n can_v be_v establish_v and_o as_o of_o old_a so_o in_o these_o our_o day_n those_o that_o be_v most_o devout_a and_o forward_a in_o the_o exercise_n of_o religion_n be_v in_o that_o their_o performance_n most_o mystical_o deceive_v in_o this_o point_n of_o true_a peace_n the_o papist_n and_o the_o most_o devour_v among_o they_o the_o jesuit_n plain_o show_v that_o they_o have_v no_o inward_a peace_n in_o that_o they_o daily_o plot_v so_o many_o policy_n to_o augment_v their_o degree_n of_o preferment_n whereas_o if_o they_o be_v at_o peace_n in_o the_o inward_o of_o their_o heart_n than_o have_v they_o preferment_n enough_o though_o in_o never_o so_o low_a a_o condition_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o they_o as_o we_o and_o we_o as_o they_o run_v from_o opinion_n to_o opinion_n and_o can_v abide_v in_o no_o condition_n with_o any_o content_n because_o we_o have_v not_o this_o inward_a peace_n of_o the_o heart_n hence_o spring_v all_o sect_n and_o all_o division_n among_o both_o papist_n and_o protestant_n and_o to_o conclude_v this_o point_n it_o be_v most_o apparent_a even_o among_o we_o both_o preacher_n and_o professor_n which_o to_o ourselves_o and_o to_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o world_n seem_v most_o religious_o exercise_v that_o we_o have_v no_o peace_n for_o though_o we_o in_o the_o secret_n of_o our_o heart_n praise_n god_n that_o he_o have_v call_v we_o from_o our_o vanity_n and_o that_o he_o have_v make_v we_o to_o abhor_v those_o vice_n in_o the_o which_o our_o neighbour_n do_v wallow_v and_o tumble_v and_o so_o bless_v ourselves_o in_o a_o conceit_n of_o a_o better_a estate_n notwithstanding_o it_o be_v most_o clear_a that_o the_o true_a peace_n of_o the_o heart_n we_o have_v not_o know_v in_o so_o much_o that_o every_o one_o of_o we_o for_o the_o most_o part_n do_v seek_v ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o end_n in_o all_o our_o course_n and_o be_v glad_a to_o patch_v and_o piece_n out_o our_o contentment_n with_o gain_n and_o glory_n and_o vain_a boast_n of_o our_o own_o praise_n oftentimes_o open_v our_o mouth_n against_o other_o secret_o beg_v commendation_n to_o ourselves_o and_o more_o than_o all_o this_o we_o must_v have_v our_o dish_n our_o dainty_n and_o our_o sweet_a morsel_n to_o support_v our_o empty_a heart_n yea_o our_o possession_n must_v be_v enlarge_v our_o building_n must_v be_v beautify_v and_o too_o little_a to_o satisfy_v our_o restless_a soul_n and_o which_o do_v clear_o show_v that_o though_o we_o have_v a_o religion_n that_o speak_v of_o peace_n yet_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o establish_v in_o the_o god_n of_o peace_n for_o be_v the_o soul_n once_o at_o rest_n and_o so_o the_o heart_n make_v true_o happy_a in_o god_n then_o as_o we_o do_v enjoy_v one_o thing_n above_o all_o so_o shall_v we_o enjoy_v all_o thing_n in_o one_o and_o in_o that_o one_o thing_n will_v all_o other_o thing_n be_v contemn_v as_o dung_n and_o as_o thing_n of_o no_o esteem_n but_o this_o earthly_a hunger_a show_v the_o heart_n emptiness_n in_o all_o now_o what_o have_v deceive_v we_o even_o our_o conceit_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o our_o religion_n quest_n but_o some_o will_v demand_v a_o reason_n why_o religious_a exercise_n do_v so_o mystical_o
