after_o we_o be_v well_o recover_v the_o holy_a story_n be_v so_o clear_a in_o this_o that_o he_o must_v be_v much_o unacquainted_a with_o the_o condition_n of_o these_o people_n in_o all_o those_o time_n that_o do_v not_o see_v it_o and_o therefore_o know_v every_o one_o can_v furnish_v himself_o with_o proof_n enough_o if_o he_o do_v but_o read_v any_o one_o book_n of_o their_o history_n i_o shall_v herein_o spare_v my_o further_a labour_n 5_o and_o last_o though_o all_o this_o be_v do_v out_o of_o conscience_n and_o we_o will_v not_o for_o any_o good_a omit_v these_o performance_n but_o in_o the_o honesty_n of_o our_o heart_n observe_v day_n of_o fast_v time_n of_o confession_n and_o constant_a prayer_n and_o have_v very_o pious_a intention_n in_o the_o business_n yet_o it_o will_v do_v not_o search_v and_o try_v their_o way_n to_o turn_v again_o unto_o the_o lord_n they_o do_v not_o every_o one_o put_v away_o the_o evil_a of_o their_o do_n and_o so_o all_o their_o zeal_n in_o or_o that_o both_o of_o they_o come_v with_o this_o inquiry_n the_o people_n seek_v to_o the_o priest_n and_o they_o not_o be_v able_a to_o resolve_v they_o come_v with_o the_o people_n to_o the_o prophet_n as_o the_o manner_n be_v in_o difficult_a case_n 2_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o answer_n wherein_o there_o be_v 1_o a_o concession_n that_o indeed_o they_o have_v fast_v many_o year_n and_o yet_o 2_o a_o absolute_a denial_n that_o they_o have_v observe_v any_o true_a fast_a all_o this_o time_n which_o be_v propound_v to_o they_o by_o way_n of_o question_n and_o appeal_v to_o their_o own_o conscience_n make_v they_o judge_n in_o their_o own_o case_n do_v put_v the_o answer_n out_o of_o all_o doubt_n and_o leave_v it_o as_o a_o matter_n clear_a evident_a and_o without_o any_o the_o least_o contradiction_n true_a that_o they_o have_v not_o fast_v at_o all_o do_v you_o yourselves_o now_o tell_v i_o say_v the_o prophet_n in_o your_o sober_a thought_n whether_o you_o can_v think_v that_o not_o eat_v weep_a howl_a etc._n etc._n be_v god_n fast_n no_o you_o have_v be_v tell_v often_o enough_o of_o this_o be_v not_o these_o the_o word_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v cry_v by_o the_o former_a prophet_n when_o jerusalem_n be_v inhabit_v and_o in_o prosperity_n etc._n etc._n so_o these_o word_n be_v best_a render_v in_o the_o 7._o vers_fw-la 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d etc._n word_n and_o endeavour_v to_o assert_v the_o truth_n of_o one_o or_o both_o of_o these_o observation_n 1_o that_o there_o be_v a_o serious_a devout_a and_o laborious_a humble_v of_o a_o man_n self_n which_o be_v not_o the_o true_a fast_v and_o humiliation_n that_o god_n will_v accept_v of_o 2_o that_o if_o there_o be_v not_o that_o which_o be_v the_o true_a there_o will_v be_v but_o little_a difference_n between_o the_o other_o and_o none_o at_o all_o the_o second_o will_v be_v a_o consequent_a of_o the_o first_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o clear_n of_o that_o it_o will_v sufficient_o be_v speak_v unto_o the_o former_a lie_v open_a enough_o before_o our_o eye_n in_o the_o text_n and_o he_o must_v be_v very_o careless_a that_o do_v not_o observe_v this_o people_n to_o have_v be_v very_o contrite_a in_o some_o instance_n and_o to_o have_v express_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o sorrow_n much_o afflict_a themselves_o and_o that_o in_o so_o serious_a a_o manner_n that_o they_o think_v they_o have_v very_o well_o please_v god_n and_o can_v not_o in_o conscience_n leave_v off_o these_o exercise_n till_o they_o know_v his_o mind_n about_o it_o and_o yet_o that_o they_o be_v but_o idle_o employ_v all_o this_o time_n and_o have_v as_o good_a have_v be_v do_v the_o quite_o contrary_a thing_n they_o themselves_o dare_v confident_o avouch_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o first_o part_n of_o what_o i_o affirm_v and_o god_n he_o as_o peremptory_o assert_v the_o other_o and_o
deal_n with_o their_o neighbour_n and_o this_o be_v as_o bad_a as_o downright_a unjustice_n chap._n 7.9_o show_v mercy_n etc._n etc._n 3_o oppression_n of_o the_o poor_a and_o those_o that_o can_v not_o right_v themselves_o against_o the_o mighty_a ch_z 7.10_o oppress_v not_o the_o widow_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o be_v chief_o the_o fault_n of_o the_o great_a one_o of_o the_o rich_a the_o it_o be_v to_o cure_v these_o distemper_n either_o because_o they_o be_v so_o dear_o belove_v or_o else_o so_o little_o regard_v while_o man_n have_v a_o conceit_n of_o their_o purity_n in_o religion_n that_o these_o person_n their_o child_n remain_v guilty_a of_o the_o very_a same_o fault_n god_n here_o tell_v they_o what_o word_n he_o have_v speak_v to_o their_o father_n by_o the_o prophet_n of_o old_a as_o i_o have_v note_v before_o vers_fw-la 7._o who_o for_o these_o together_o with_o two_o other_o sin_n viz._n sabbath_n break_v and_o idolatry_n be_v turn_v out_o of_o the_o promise_a land_n there_o be_v indeed_o other_o sin_n mention_v by_o the_o prophet_n but_o none_o so_o much_o insist_v upon_o as_o these_o to_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o their_o expulsion_n out_o of_o themselves_o for_o very_o good_a man_n though_o they_o retain_v their_o father_n injustice_n and_o fraud_n cruelty_n and_o numercifulnesse_n oppression_n and_o violent_a deal_n which_o be_v plain_o the_o case_n of_o the_o pharisee_n the_o posterity_n of_o these_o person_n in_o our_o saviour_n time_n before_o this_o their_o last_o and_o long_a captivity_n they_o be_v notorious_o guilty_a of_o these_o sin_n more_o than_o of_o any_o other_o while_o they_o can_v not_o be_v challenge_v with_o any_o idolatrous_a practice_n or_o with_o neglect_n of_o the_o sabbath_n day_n no_o nor_o with_o less_o strictness_n in_o any_o other_o religious_a performance_n under_o their_o religion_n they_o cloak_v their_o unrighteousness_n and_o make_v all_o their_o piety_n good_a for_o nothing_o be_v stain_v with_o covetousness_n oppression_n of_o the_o widow_n and_o those_o that_o have_v no_o helper_n with_o such_o like_a wickedness_n from_o all_o which_o we_o may_v be_v bold_a to_o affirm_v still_o that_o god_n proceed_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n with_o nation_n that_o where_o these_o sin_n do_v remain_v it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o fast_o and_o pray_v and_o cry_v to_o god_n for_o mercy_n yea_o to_o reform_v in_o other_o matter_n which_o concern_v god_n worship_n and_o service_n about_o which_o common_o most_o of_o the_o noise_n be_v make_v out_o of_o hope_n that_o their_o prayer_n and_o their_o preach_n and_o other_o religious_a office_n together_o with_o the_o assert_v of_o these_o from_o superstition_n and_o impurity_n will_v drown_v the_o cry_n of_o injustice_n cruelty_n blood_n oppression_n and_o such_o like_a sin_n of_o the_o which_o that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o sensible_a i_o shall_v digest_v what_o remain_v into_o these_o particular_a consideration_n and_o make_v appear_v 1_o that_o this_o of_o old_a be_v the_o fast_a which_o god_n require_v of_o their_o father_n by_o the_o prophet_n viz._n that_o they_o shall_v forsake_v these_o sin_n which_o i_o have_v mention_v and_o that_o he_o every_o where_n urge_v even_o in_o the_o most_o reform_a time_n their_o grow_a more_o just_a merciful_a etc._n etc._n in_o their_o deal_n and_o their_o practise_v those_o duty_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o respect_n that_o one_o man_n have_v to_o another_o 2_o that_o after_o their_o return_n from_o the_o captivity_n of_o babylon_n still_o these_o thing_n more_o than_o any_o else_o be_v insist_v upon_o as_o those_o they_o be_v deficient_a in_o and_o shall_v amend_v 3_o that_o these_o be_v note_v as_o the_o waste_n and_o destroy_v sin_n though_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o other_o 4_o that_o where_o man_n expect_v peace_n settlement_n quiet_a and_o removal_n of_o judgement_n in_o a_o nation_n they_o must_v have_v a_o especial_a care_n to_o reform_v in_o these_o particular_n and_o above_o other_o thing_n these_o be_v to_o be_v mind_v in_o our_o humiliation_n because_o common_o in_o these_o nation_n be_v most_o guilty_a and_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o imagine_v that_o some_o religious_a duty_n be_v the_o great_a matter_n that_o god_n expect_v 1_o that_o these_o of_o old_a be_v the_o thing_n the_o prophet_n insist_v upon_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n to_o be_v clear_v and_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n offer_v himself_o a_o witness_n in_o the_o very_a first_o chapter_n of_o his_o vision_n where_o he_o find_v no_o fault_n for_o their_o idolatry_n nor_o question_n the_o legality_n of_o their_o sacrifice_n nor_o charge_v they_o with_o pray_v to_o strange_a god_n nor_o blame_v for_o withhold_a his_o due_a oblation_n from_o he_o no_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o acknowledge_v a_o multitude_n of_o sacrifice_n that_o he_o be_v full_a of_o burn_a offering_n that_o they_o observe_v their_o appoint_a feast_n and_o solemn_a meeting_n and_o make_v
