soul_n viz._n against_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o now_o for_o satisfaction_n to_o such_o christian_n let_v we_o search_v out_o the_o cause_n of_o such_o complaint_n i_o conceive_v there_o may_v be_v a_o double_a cause_n 1._o a_o mistake_n in_o the_o nature_n and_o act_n of_o faith_n 2._o a_o misjudging_a of_o the_o effect_n of_o faith_n first_o the_o complaint_n of_o such_o a_o soul_n which_o yet_o all_o this_o time_n true_o believe_v may_v arise_v from_o a_o mistake_n concern_v the_o nature_n and_o act_n of_o faith_n and_o therefore_o the_o way_n to_o satisfy_v it_o will_v be_v right_o to_o inform_v it_o concern_v they_o and_o to_o this_o end_n i_o shall_v but_o propound_v to_o such_o a_o soul_n to_o consider_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o that_o there_o be_v many_o act_n and_o more_o degree_n than_o one_o of_o true_a save_a faith_n 2._o that_o true_a faith_n be_v of_o so_o good_a a_o nature_n that_o it_o will_v and_o may_v dwell_v with_o many_o doubt_n and_o weakness_n in_o a_o true_a faith_n have_v several_a act_n and_o several_a degree_n a_o fullness_n of_o persuasion_n be_v not_o the_o least_o act_n or_o degree_n of_o faith_n no_o not_o of_o true_a justify_v faith_n there_o be_v note_n under_o that_o ela._n there_o be_v great_a quarrel_v concern_v the_o nature_n and_o essence_n of_o true_a justify_v faith_n some_o will_v have_v it_o to_o be_v a_o bare_a knowledge_n thus_o say_v the_o apostle_n the_o devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v some_o will_v afford_v we_o a_o little_a more_o and_o tell_v we_o that_o faith_n consist_v in_o a_o assent_n but_o beyond_o this_o they_o will_v not_o stride_v some_o in_o too_o full_a opposition_n to_o these_o deny_v any_o certainty_n of_o persuasion_n and_o assurance_n to_o be_v have_v describe_v faith_n by_o a_o assurance_n and_o full_a persuasion_n which_o be_v the_o high_a and_o not_o the_o direct_a but_o the_o reflex_n act_n of_o faith_n when_o indeed_o the_o very_a essence_n of_o justify_v faith_n lie_v betwixt_o these_o in_o a_o act_n of_o adherence_n to_o and_o reliance_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n to_o faith_n we_o grant_v a_o knowledge_n be_v require_v of_o god_n word_n but_o this_o we_o say_v be_v rather_o suppose_v to_o faith_n than_o a_o act_n of_o true_a justify_v faith_n first_o the_o low_a act_n of_o faith_n

it_o from_o tradition_n that_o christ_n be_v bear_v of_o a_o virgin_n or_o that_o christ_n though_o eternal_a god_n yet_o be_v also_o perfect_a man_n that_o he_o die_v for_o sinner_n etc._n etc._n the_o wretch_n will_v tell_v you_o they_o believe_v these_o thing_n but_o alas_o they_o assent_n not_o to_o they_o as_o clear_v distinct_a truth_n make_v out_o evident_o and_o convince_o to_o their_o soul_n they_o say_v they_o profess_v they_o worship_v they_o know_v not_o what_o they_o understand_v not_o these_o thing_n the_o natural_a man_n receive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n for_o they_o be_v foolishness_n unto_o he_o 14._o 1_o cor._n 2._o 14._o nor_o can_v he_o know_v they_o for_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v he_o give_v his_o blind_a assent_n and_o perhaps_o will_v set_v his_o regard_n many_o christian_n that_o strive_v and_o labour_v after_o knowledge_n have_v want_v those_o mean_n that_o other_o have_v have_v either_o in_o regard_n of_o hear_v the_o word_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o education_n have_v not_o attain_v to_o what_o they_o desire_v walk_v yet_o trouble_v about_o their_o condition_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o ignorance_n and_o because_o of_o this_o be_v ready_a to_o deny_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o the_o work_n of_o true_a faith_n in_o their_o soul_n give_v i_o leave_v a_o little_a to_o speak_v something_o by_o way_n of_o satisfaction_n to_o such_o poor_a soul_n you_o shall_v hear_v they_o complain_v in_o this_o manner_n complaint_n alas_o i_o believe_v i_o have_v not_o yet_o step_v the_o first_o step_n of_o a_o christian._n i_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o knowledge_n of_o god_n word_n i_o be_o a_o poor_a ignorant_a soul_n i_o know_v not_o half_a the_o mysterious_a doctrine_n of_o salvation_n can_v such_o a_o ignorant_a i_o know_v i_o know_v nothing_o as_o â—ought_n to_o know_v it_o here_o be_v the_o complaint_n now_o satisfaction_n now_o to_o speak_v a_o word_n or_o two_o by_o way_n of_o comfort_n and_o stay_v to_o the_o soul_n that_o labour_n under_o this_o trouble_n for_o thy_o know_v nothing_o as_o thou_o ought_v to_o know_v as_o thou_o complain_v it_o be_v happy_a for_o thy_o soul_n if_o thou_o speak_v from_o thy_o heart_n that_o god_n have_v wrought_v thy_o heart_n into_o so_o low_a a_o opinion_n of_o thyself_o see_v what_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 1_o cor._n 8._o 2._o and_o if_o any_o man_n think_v that_o he_o know_v any_o thing_n he_o know_v nothing_o yet_o as_o he_o ought_v to_o know_v it_o but_o now_o for_o thy_o real_a ignorance_n that_o thou_o so_o much_o complain_v of_o i_o shall_v or_o two_o for_o the_o first_o first_o consider_v thou_o may_v be_v ignorant_a in_o many_o point_n of_o religion_n which_o be_v fundamental_a in_o some_o sense_n and_o yet_o have_v faith_n true_a faith_n i_o think_v when_o we_o speak_v of_o fundamental_o we_o ought_v to_o distinguish_v some_o fundamental_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a our_o salvation_n stand_v upon_o they_o as_o to_o believe_v that_o jesus_n christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n that_o he_o become_v man_n a_o jesus_n a_o full_a saviour_n that_o he_o die_v for_o we_o that_o we_o may_v live_v that_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o in_o he_o and_o that_o in_o he_o there_o be_v a_o fullness_n of_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n these_o now_o be_v those_o pillar_n upon_o which_o our_o salvation_n stand_v and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o which_o be_v always_o suppose_a to_o true_a justify_v faith_n none_o can_v be_v ignorant_a in_o these_o and_o believe_v for_o how_o shall_v they_o believe_v in_o he_o of_o who_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v which_o be_v the_o apostle_n question_v but_o now_o there_o be_v other_o doctrine_n which_o be_v ordinary_o call_v fundamental_n because_o they_o be_v such_o as_o christian_n learn_v even_o in_o the_o begin_n of_o their_o conversion_n such_o as_o be_v first_o teach_v and_o lay_v for_o a_o foundation_n to_o build_v other_o truth_n upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o imposition_n of_o hand_n resurrection_n of_o the_o dead_a etc._n etc._n be_v reckon_v up_o by_o the_o apostle_n for_o fundamental_n heb._n 6._o 1_o 2._o now_o for_o these_o it_o be_v very_o possible_a that_o a_o christian_n may_v be_v ignorant_a of_o they_o and_o yet_o have_v a_o true_a faith_n in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o trinity_n of_o the_o person_n viz._n that_o in_o the_o deity_n there_o be_v three_o distinct_a manner_n of_o be_v three_o distinct_a subsistence_n distinguish_v each_o from_o other_o by_o their_o several_a property_n this_o be_v without_o question_n a_o fundamental_a point_n of_o the_o second_o sort_n such_o as_o be_v usual_o teach_v christian_n as_o a_o piece_n of_o the_o foundation_n as_o a_o truth_n and_o it_o have_v the_o attest_v of_o my_o heart_n now_o in_o this_o regard_n a_o christian_a can_v be_v proper_o and_o positive_o say_v to_o assent_v unto_o any_o truth_n of_o god_n godly_a and_o sober_a divine_n that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n that_o justify_v but_o as_o it_o be_v conclude_v against_o the_o antinomian_o and_o libertine_n on_o one_o side_n that_o it_o be_v not_o faith_n of_o assurance_n that_o only_o justify_v so_o it_o be_v also_o conclude_v against_o the_o papist_n on_o the_o other_o side_n that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o assent_n to_o and_o persuasion_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n that_o justifi_v the_o soul_n but_o that_o true_a justify_v faith_n though_o it_o do_v suppose_v both_o knowledge_n and_o assent_n yet_o it_o do_v
