because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o flat_a opposition_n between_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o man_n that_o they_o can_v both_o be_v at_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o time_n in_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o subject_n but_o the_o have_v of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o privation_n of_o the_o other_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o writing_n and_o namely_o rom._n 10._o verse_n 3._o and_o also_o rom._n 11._o verse_n 5.6_o psal_n 3.6_o and_o this_o i_o think_v may_v satisfy_v any_o reasonable_a man_n yea_o stop_n his_o mouth_n from_o bark_v or_o bellow_v against_o find_v in_o good_a and_o approve_a author_n that_o very_o often_o it_o signify_v after_o the_o propound_v of_o diverse_a opinion_n and_o sentence_n to_o choose_v out_o that_o which_o a_o man_n will_v affirm_v and_o maintain_v and_o so_o we_o doubt_v of_o it_o in_o this_o place_n it_o impli_v not_o a_o doubtful_a and_o uncerten_a imagination_n for_o in_o a_o matter_n of_o so_o great_a importance_n the_o apostle_n will_v not_o deal_v so_o sleighte_o with_o the_o church_n and_o the_o member_n of_o it_o but_o a_o assure_a and_o steadfast_a affirmation_n which_o as_o yet_o may_v appear_v by_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o greek_a word_n above_o mention_v so_o i_o think_v it_o be_v confirm_v by_o the_o weight_n of_o the_o cause_n or_o matter_n the_o the_o apostle_n have_v in_o hand_n which_o be_v free_a justification_n through_o faith_n in_o christ_n of_o which_o howsoever_o sometime_o some_o good_a man_n in_o the_o weakness_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o behold_v of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n may_v or_o do_v doubt_n yet_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o be_v be_v and_o ever_o shall_v be_v most_o sure_a and_o stable_a and_o therefore_o unless_o they_o will_v continual_o confound_v the_o term_n of_o doubt_v and_o think_v this_o text_n or_o testimony_n will_v do_v they_o no_o good_a and_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v of_o such_o a_o doubtful_a signification_n always_o then_o must_v this_o present_a time_n be_v not_o worthy_a of_o the_o glory_n which_o shall_v be_v show_v unto_o us._n what_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o the_o apostle_n doubt_v of_o this_o point_n whether_o that_o our_o suffering_n here_o and_o the_o glory_n to_o be_v reveal_v in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v be_v unequal_a sure_o he_o know_v and_o feel_v well_o enough_o the_o great_a odds_n and_o difference_n that_o be_v betwixt_o they_o and_o that_o make_v he_o in_o another_o place_n to_o say_v our_o light_a affliction_n which_o be_v but_o for_o a_o while_n cause_v unto_o we_o a_o far_o more_o excellent_a a_o party_n between_o the_o suffering_n of_o all_o or_o any_o of_o the_o saint_n and_o the_o infinite_a and_o incomprehensible_a joy_n of_o eternal_a life_n beside_o what_o logician_n be_v there_o that_o see_v not_o that_o there_o be_v in_o this_o argument_n falacia_fw-la homo_fw-la nymias_fw-la that_o be_v as_o we_o may_v say_v of_o the_o equivocation_n or_o doubtful_a and_o diverse_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n to_o think_v which_o though_o sometime_o &_o in_o some_o place_n it_o may_v signify_v to_o doubt_v &_o yet_o that_o have_v be_v show_v on_o this_o part_n yet_o here_o for_o the_o reason_n above_o allege_v it_o must_v signify_v certainty_n and_o assurednes_n though_o not_o of_o the_o feel_n of_o this_o truth_n always_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n of_o the_o godly_a who_o sometime_o feel_v it_o and_o sometime_o not_o yet_o of_o truth_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o doctrine_n itself_o which_o can_v be_v no_o more_o uncerten_a then_o god_n himself_o from_o who_o it_o commteh_a or_o they_o the_o spirit_n itself_o by_o which_o the_o apostle_n preach_v &_o deliver_v the_o same_o to_o conclude_v this_o be_v the_o plain_a meaning_n of_o the_o apostle_n that_o from_o the_o former_a disputation_n or_o point_n that_o before_o have_v be_v handle_v he_o do_v necessary_o gather_v &_o fine_o conclude_v that_o a_o christian_n or_o faithful_a man_n be_v justify_v through_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o not_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o good_a reason_n he_o shall_v conclude_v so_o out_o of_o the_o premise_n for_o he_o have_v before_o evince_v &_o prove_v this_o that_o all_o man_n whether_o they_o be_v jew_n or_o gentile_n the_o gentile_n without_o the_o law_n &_o the_o jew_n by_o &_o under_o the_o law_n be_v sinner_n and_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n &_o therefore_o destitute_a &_o void_a of_o righteousness_n in_o &_o of_o themselves_o &_o righteous_a they_o must_v be_v if_o they_o will_v be_v save_v but_o that_o which_o distribute_v his_o grace_n see_v good_a and_o therefore_o he_o can_v absolute_o know_v either_o himself_o or_o other_o to_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v save_v as_o god_n or_o can_v be_v precedent_n or_o immediate_a matter_n judge_v or_o determine_v thereof_o for_o indeed_o that_o be_v to_o be_v god_n and_o not_o man_n yet_o by_o subsequent_a thing_n or_o mean_n etc._n but_o also_o both_o probable_o together_o and_o charitable_o to_o judge_v of_o other_o as_o we_o see_v the_o apostle_n peter_n do_v of_o the_o stranger_n that_o dwell_v here_o and_o there_o 1._o pet._n 1._o verse_n 2_o yea_o and_o of_o some_o natural_a person_n also_o as_o john_n do_v in_o his_o second_o epistle_n to_o the_o elect_a lady_n and_o certain_o also_o to_o determine_v concern_v our_o own_o estate_n that_o way_n whether_o we_o consider_v ourselves_o by_o ourselves_o singular_o or_o as_o we_o be_v join_v with_o the_o rest_n of_o god_n elect_v we_o say_v of_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o a_o steadfast_a hope_n of_o eternal_a glorification_n we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o of_o our_o election_n as_o we_o may_v perceive_v by_o that_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 8._o who_o he_o have_v predestine_v they_o also_o he_o have_v call_v &_o who_o he_o have_v call_v they_o also_o he_o have_v justify_v and_o they_o who_o he_o have_v justify_v they_o he_o have_v also_o glorify_v and_o 2._o timoth._n 1_o god_n have_v save_v we_o and_o call_v we_o with_o a_o holy_a call_n not_o according_a to_o our_o work_n but_o according_a to_o his_o own_o purpose_n and_o grace_n which_o be_v give_v to_o we_o through_o jese_n christ_n before_o the_o world_n be_v as_o also_o if_o he_o give_v we_o care_n and_o conscience_n of_o well-doing_n it_o pleadge_v the_o same_o grace_n unto_o we_o according_a to_o which_o saint_n peter_n say_v give_v diligence_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a and_o therefore_o we_o see_v that_o reject_v as_o devilish_a and_o abominable_a all_o such_o conceit_n beside_o that_o it_o strong_o savour_v of_o anabaptistry_n which_o for_o many_o fond_a fantasy_n of_o their_o own_o have_v nothing_o mind_n for_o who_o safety_n and_o good_a they_o will_v seem_v to_o provide_v in_o this_o &_o such_o other_o conceit_n of_o their_o own_o forgery_n for_o though_o it_o be_v pleasant_a to_o flesh_n and_o blood_n to_o hear_v much_o of_o man_n merit_n man_n freewill_n and_o many_o such_o like_a that_o they_o hold_v all_o tend_v to_o puff_n up_o man_n &_o that_o against_o god_n yet_o indeed_o to_o speak_v the_o truth_n what_o peace_n or_o comfort_n can_v there_o be_v in_o these_o thing_n when_o man_n be_v own_o knowledge_n both_o before_o &_o after_o regeneration_n shall_v within_o himself_o &_o in_o other_o direct_o stand_v up_o against_o the_o same_o to_o take_v one_o or_o two_o of_o they_o that_o so_o by_o they_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o rest_n what_o man_n that_o know_v or_o which_o be_v much_o but_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o soul_n &_o that_o that_o be_v to_o come_v which_o be_v more_o and_o yet_o of_o all_o other_o most_o heavy_a for_o a_o christian_a man_n as_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o own_o particular_a to_o think_v upon_o this_o be_v one_o that_o they_o teach_v all_o man_n in_o every_o place_n to_o doubt_v of_o their_o justification_n and_o salvation_n underprop_a of_o truth_n and_o verity_n yet_o have_v not_o i_o assay_v for_o the_o staâ—e_v of_o myself_o and_o other_o only_o to_o supplant_v corruption_n a_o untruth_n but_o also_o to_o defend_v that_o truth_n that_o god_n have_v propound_v in_o his_o word_n and_o we_o hear_v sound_v in_o our_o church_n namely_o that_o every_o faithful_a man_n ought_v to_o be_v certain_o assure_v of_o his_o free_a justification_n and_o everlasting_a salvation_n through_o christ_n and_o herein_o i_o have_v purpose_v and_o mind_n through_o god_n goodness_n to_o perform_v and_o observe_v this_o order_n follow_v that_o be_v first_o to_o answer_v whatsoever_o they_o say_v and_o object_n against_o this_o truth_n and_o then_o afterward_o to_o ratify_v and_o confirm_v it_o and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o first_o to_o fit_v the_o ground_n for_o seed_n and_o herb_n by_o dig_v and_o till_v of_o it_o and_o in_o root_n out_o noisome_a and_o bad_a thing_n assay_v to_o make_v it_o meet_v for_o the_o good_a seed_n â—e_n purpose_v to_o sow_v or_o set_v there_o so_o must_v we_o do_v then_o when_o we_o offer_v or_o mind_n to_o make_v fruitful_a in_o man_n mind_n the_o seed_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o word_n of_o god_n not_o only_o do_v what_o we_o can_v to_o remove_v and_o take_v away_o the_o natural_a blindness_n and_o ignorance_n of_o god_n and_o good_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o man_n yea_o and_o that_o same_o seed_n of_o error_n and_o heresy_n that_o satan_n by_o himself_o and_o his_o suppost_n in_o malice_n against_o god_n and_o mischief_n towards_o man_n have_v cast_v and_o spread_v abroad_o in_o the_o world_n but_o also_o to_o plant_v &_o cause_n to_o thrive_v the_o word_n of_o truth_n and_o life_n all_o our_o adversary_n argument_n be_v draw_v either_o from_o divine_a authority_n as_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o word_n of_o god_n foulie_o wrest_v and_o misunderstand_v as_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o place_n which_o they_o object_n shall_v i_o doubt_v not_o through_o god_n goodness_n plain_o appear_v or_o else_o from_o humane_a testimony_n and_o reason_n of_o which_o sure_o we_o need_v make_v no_o great_a reckon_n not_o only_o because_o they_o be_v as_o easy_o reject_v as_o allege_v but_o also_o because_o we_o acknowledge_v no_o other_o object_n or_o ground_n of_o our_o conscience_n to_o stay_v ourselves_o upon_o but_o the_o holy_a scripture_n or_o write_a word_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o save_v that_o we_o will_v have_v all_o to_o understand_v yea_o even_o the_o very_a adversary_n themselves_o that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a for_o the_o defence_n of_o falsehood_n through_o the_o malice_n of_o satan_n and_o their_o own_o corruption_n to_o allege_v any_o thing_n which_o through_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n shed_v abroad_o into_o our_o heart_n and_o the_o light_n of_o truth_n vouchsafe_v unto_o we_o we_o be_v not_o able_a both_o plain_o to_o descry_v and_o sufficient_o to_o confute_v we_o may_v let_v all_o that_o pass_v without_o any_o manner_n of_o touch_n at_o all_o we_o will_v begin_v first_o with_o those_o thing_n they_o allege_v out_o of_o scripture_n because_o they_o only_o indeed_o be_v material_a &_o so_o afterward_o come_v to_o humane_a authority_n now_o because_o the_o scripture_n of_o god_n be_v not_o unright_o divide_v into_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n and_o they_o allege_v somewhat_o out_o of_o both_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o this_o corrupt_a point_n we_o will_v first_o answer_v the_o place_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o after_o of_o the_o new_a place_n out_o of_o the_o old_a testament_n they_o common_o allege_v from_o thence_o such_o place_n as_o
as_o unto_o a_o menstruous_a and_o pollute_a thing_n depart_v hence_o and_o get_v away_o 4_o in_o the_o four_o place_n they_o reason_n thus_o s._n paul_n say_v 1._o corinth_n 4._o i_o know_v nothing_o by_o myself_o yet_o be_o i_o not_o thereby_o justify_v for_o he_o that_o judge_v i_o be_v the_o lord_n therefore_o paul_n be_v not_o assure_v concern_v his_o own_o justification_n but_o hereunto_o we_o answer_v first_o that_o this_o argument_n even_o as_o the_o former_a also_o will_v rather_o have_v be_v place_v with_o the_o reason_n draw_v from_o holy_a scripture_n because_o as_o we_o see_v case_n yet_o be_v not_o always_o good_a no_o not_o in_o good_a man_n because_o now_o we_o may_v say_v even_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o a_o other_o place_n &_o another_o case_n also_o we_o know_v no_o more_o now_o after_o the_o flesh_n no_o not_o christ_n jesus_n and_o when_o they_o be_v at_o the_o best_a and_o high_a they_o be_v rather_o argument_n of_o persuasion_n to_o lead_v man_n to_o do_v the_o like_a then_o sound_a &_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o prove_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o which_o they_o be_v allege_v but_o we_o will_v let_v this_o also_o go_v &_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v of_o more_o weight_n and_o importance_n as_o for_o this_o argument_n if_o we_o know_v or_o understand_v right_o what_o the_o apostle_n mean_v by_o these_o word_n it_o be_v or_o will_v be_v easy_o absolve_v for_o the_o knot_n be_v not_o so_o hard_o twist_v or_o tie_v as_o they_o imagine_v it_o seem_v unto_o man_n that_o as_o verse_n 1._o of_o the_o 4._o chap._n he_o have_v put_v the_o people_n in_o mind_n of_o their_o duty_n towards_o their_o minister_n namely_o that_o though_o they_o may_v not_o account_v they_o lord_n and_o ruler_n yet_o they_o shall_v esteem_v they_o as_o such_o who_o christ_n have_v send_v even_o by_o their_o hand_n to_o deliver_v unto_o they_o the_o treasure_n &_o hide_a secret_n of_o god_n kingdom_n and_o salvation_n so_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n he_o have_v tell_v the_o minister_n &_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n what_o be_v their_o duty_n namely_o that_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o their_o charge_n they_o shall_v carry_v themselves_o not_o as_o lord_n but_o as_o servant_n yea_o as_o faithful_a servant_n who_o must_v one_o day_n render_v a_o account_n for_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o because_o he_o have_v set_v forth_o himself_o as_o a_o example_n &_o yet_o many_o of_o the_o corinthian_n regard_v he_o not_o but_o esteem_v he_o as_o a_o base_a person_n he_o do_v verse_n 3._o use_v a_o judge_v of_o learning_n and_o wisdom_n or_o of_o wise_a and_o learned_a man_n &_o this_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o verse_n 3._o the_o second_o be_v take_v from_o his_o own_o can_v not_o judge_v he_o because_o he_o himself_o be_v not_o able_a thorough_o and_o exact_o to_o discern_v himself_o must_v he_o therefore_o doubt_v of_o his_o righteousness_n and_o salvation_n before_o god_n sure_o it_o will_v not_o follow_v for_o first_o beside_o that_o god_n and_o man_n differ_v it_o be_v not_o safe_a to_o infer_v upon_o a_o godly_a man_n debase_v of_o himself_o for_o some_o respect_n before_o man_n his_o doubt_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n or_o his_o distrustfulness_n of_o his_o mercy_n towards_o he_o many_o a_o man_n debase_v himself_o before_o god_n and_o yet_o have_v hope_n in_o his_o heart_n yea_o the_o more_o for_o that_o because_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a &_o presumptuous_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o lowly_a and_o meek_a as_o the_o scripture_n say_v and_o though_o we_o shall_v understand_v it_o of_o justification_n before_o god_n yet_o other_o place_n of_o scripture_n and_o some_o thing_n in_o this_o for_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o contrary_a to_o itself_o shall_v declare_v it_o for_o sure_o the_o apostle_n here_o doubt_v not_o whether_o the_o newene_n of_o life_n &_o good_a work_n which_o he_o be_v renew_v have_v do_v be_v seal_n &_o pledge_n unto_o he_o of_o this_o that_o he_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n but_o plain_o &_o simple_o deni_v that_o by_o they_o he_o be_v justify_v which_o as_o we_o may_v confirm_v by_o a_o other_o place_n of_o the_o apostle_n phil._n 3._o when_o he_o say_v that_o he_o have_v no_o confidence_n in_o the_o flesh_n &_o that_o if_o any_o other_o man_n think_v he_o have_v aught_o whereof_o he_o may_v trust_v in_o the_o flesh_n much_o more_o he_o who_o touch_v the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v in_o the_o law_n be_v unrebukeable_a some_o think_v it_o stand_v upon_o religious_a follow_v he_o that_o by_o the_o gospel_n can_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v sufficient_a repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n he_o can_v be_v assure_v touch_v justification_n or_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o or_o concern_v salvation_n for_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n require_v repentance_n of_o us._n but_o no_o man_n by_o the_o gospel_n can_v tell_v whether_o he_o have_v sufficient_a repentance_n yea_o or_o no_o therefore_o no_o man_n no_o not_o by_o the_o gospel_n know_v or_o can_v know_v concern_v god_n grace_n towards_o he_o &_o his_o own_o salvation_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o the_o maior_fw-la proposition_n that_o have_v need_n of_o explanation_n first_o that_o word_n of_o sufficient_a repentance_n be_v not_o only_o ambiguous_a and_o doubtful_a but_o full_a of_o unsoundnesse_n as_o though_o forsooth_o our_o justification_n before_o god_n or_o reconciliation_n with_o he_o stand_v upon_o the_o dignity_n sufficiency_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o repentance_n that_o be_v of_o our_o contrition_n faith_n and_o new_a obedience_n whereas_o we_o know_v it_o depend_v not_o upon_o all_o or_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n but_o upon_o the_o absolute_a obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n which_o as_o it_o be_v sufficient_a indeed_o to_o take_v away_o all_o sin_n so_o it_o be_v much_o more_o powerful_a to_o supply_v the_o defect_n of_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n or_o as_o though_o again_o we_o can_v sufficient_o and_o enough_o sorrow_n for_o our_o sin_n whereas_o if_o we_o weigh_v not_o only_o all_o our_o sin_n but_o any_o of_o they_o in_o it_o own_o nature_n and_o according_a to_o the_o grievous_a effect_n it_o bring_v forth_o or_o the_o heavy_a judgement_n of_o god_n against_o we_o for_o the_o same_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o our_o conscience_n and_o in_o truth_n before_o god_n that_o though_o we_o will_v or_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o all_o the_o day_n of_o our_o life_n but_o repent_v we_o of_o that_o one_o yet_o we_o can_v not_o sufficient_o perform_v it_o therefore_o or_o as_o though_o we_o have_v some_o sufficiency_n in_o ourselves_o to_o all_o or_o any_o good_a thing_n whereas_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o plain_a &_o evident_a term_n that_o we_o be_v not_o sufficient_a of_o ourselves_o as_o of_o ourselves_o to_o think_v any_o thing_n much_o less_o sufficient_o to_o repent_v but_o that_o all_o our_o sufficiency_n be_v of_o god_n who_o work_v in_o we_o both_o the_o will_n and_o the_o deed_n according_a to_o his_o good_a pleasure_n secondlie_o whereas_o the_o mayor_n affirm_v that_o unless_o a_o man_n have_v sufficient_a repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n he_o can_v be_v assure_v of_o justification_n etc._n etc._n we_o answer_v that_o be_v false_a for_o though_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o which_o be_v want_v in_o himself_o he_o can_v be_v assure_v yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o which_o for_o he_o be_v supply_v by_o another_o and_o accept_v of_o he_o to_o who_o that_o supply_n be_v due_a he_o may_v conceive_v comfort_n and_o certainty_n also_o for_o even_o as_o when_o the_o debt_n that_o a_o man_n owe_v be_v satisfy_v by_o his_o brother_n &_o the_o party_n to_o who_o it_o be_v due_a acknowledge_v himself_o content_v and_o pay_v he_o that_o ought_v the_o debt_n need_v not_o doubt_n much_o less_o distrust_n so_o be_v the_o case_n between_o god_n and_o we_o through_o the_o death_n &_o obedience_n of_o christ_n his_o son_n &_o our_o elder_a brother_n for_o god_n confess_v contentment_n and_o acknowledge_v satisfaction_n when_o he_o say_v this_o be_v my_o wellbe_n love_v son_n in_o who_o i_o be_o well_o please_v &c_n &c_n and_o christ_n have_v pay_v the_o debt_n because_o he_o have_v put_v out_o the_o hand_n writing_n of_o ordinance_n that_o be_v against_o we_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o we_o he_o even_o take_v it_o out_o of_o the_o way_n and_o fasten_v it_o upon_o the_o cross_n and_o have_v spoil_v principality_n and_o power_n and_o have_v make_v a_o show_v of_o they_o open_o and_o have_v triumph_v over_o they_o in_o the_o same_o cross_n and_o why_o then_o shall_v we_o distrust_v or_o doubt_n unless_o we_o will_v suspect_v the_o suffiencie_n of_o christ_n obedience_n or_o the_o absolutenes_n of_o god_n work_v in_o give_v he_o to_o the_o death_n for_o we_o all_o three_o this_o be_v faulty_a in_o the_o mayor_n that_o it_o make_v it_o a_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o office_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o certify_v man_n heart_n of_o repentance_n whereas_o the_o chief_a duty_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v to_o publish_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o by_o consequent_a eternal_a life_n also_o for_o where_o the_o first_o be_v the_o latter_a can_v choose_v but_o follow_v in_o the_o name_n and_o obedience_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o though_o we_o will_v not_o or_o can_v deny_v but_o that_o repentance_n be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o join_v with_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n yet_o be_v not_o therefore_o annex_v thereunto_o that_o in_o the_o worthiness_n or_o suffiencie_n of_o it_o we_o may_v merit_v assurance_n but_o that_o in_o the_o have_v of_o it_o it_o may_v pledge_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n the_o forgiveness_n of_o all_o our_o transgression_n and_o yet_o not_o as_o though_o it_o be_v of_o ourselves_o though_o it_o be_v in_o ourselves_o but_o as_o it_o be_v god_n work_n in_o we_o he_o give_v this_o glory_n to_o his_o own_o work_n to_o testify_v this_o favour_n unto_o our_o heart_n of_o reconciliation_n and_o peace_n indeed_o if_o repentance_n be_v of_o and_o from_o man_n it_o be_v somewhat_o that_o they_o say_v but_o be_v simple_o and_o only_o from_o god_n who_o if_o he_o do_v not_o effectual_o batter_v man_n stony_a and_o hard_a heart_n they_o can_v return_v unto_o he_o they_o can_v think_v or_o speak_v thus_o but_o with_o great_a sin_n against_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n last_o concern_v the_o confirmation_n of_o the_o proposition_n in_o these_o word_n for_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n require_v repentance_n of_o we_o we_o confess_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o sentence_n but_o not_o in_o their_o sense_n for_o that_o god_n demand_v it_o no_o man_n i_o think_v will_v deny_v because_o every_o where_o almost_o it_o be_v say_v repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n but_o he_o that_o require_v it_o for_o these_o end_n &_o purpose_n that_o these_o man_n imagine_v as_o namely_o that_o it_o shall_v puff_n we_o up_o in_o pride_n and_o presumption_n of_o merit_n that_o we_o shall_v think_v we_o have_v it_o of_o ourselves_o and_o so_o therein_o assure_v our_o heart_n that_o be_v most_o false_a but_o rather_o because_o it_o come_v from_o
sound_n and_o steadfast_a faith_n there_o follow_v a_o certain_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o comfort_n and_o joy_n according_a to_o which_o it_o be_v say_v 2._o chro._n 20._o put_v your_o trust_n in_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v assure_v and_o these_o motion_n sense_n or_o feeling_n be_v not_o certain_o of_o humane_a reason_n or_o of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n as_o we_o say_v for_o than_o they_o shall_v be_v in_o all_o man_n alike_o or_o else_o nature_n shall_v be_v a_o unequal_a distributer_n of_o her_o favour_n and_o they_o shall_v be_v prop_v also_o up_o with_o some_o outward_a experience_n but_o that_o be_v not_o so_o for_o they_o be_v stay_v upon_o the_o word_n &_o promise_n of_o god_n &_o that_o not_o only_o without_o respect_n of_o outward_a and_o natural_a thing_n but_o even_o contrary_a to_o the_o reason_n of_o nature_n and_o flesh_n which_o as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o suffering_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o martyrdom_n of_o god_n people_n who_o run_v through_o fire_n and_o water_n be_v support_v with_o the_o power_n of_o a_o mighty_a persuasion_n from_o god_n of_o which_o the_o wise_a man_n of_o this_o world_n know_v nothing_o or_o understand_v so_o we_o may_v behold_v it_o likewise_o in_o abraham_n the_o friend_n of_o god_n and_o the_o father_n of_o the_o faithful_a who_o not_o once_o and_o away_o as_o we_o say_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o his_o own_o wither_a body_n and_o his_o wife_n sarahs_n barren_a womb_n conceive_v hope_n of_o have_v a_o son_n according_a to_o promise_n rom._n 4.19.8_o but_o also_o in_o the_o offering_n of_o isaac_n his_o son_n he_o believe_v that_o god_n be_v able_a to_o raise_v he_o up_o from_o the_o dead_a from_o whence_o after_o a_o sort_n he_o receive_v he_o as_o the_o apostle_n note_v in_o the_o 11._o chap._n of_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n verse_n 19_o 13_o there_o remain_v the_o thirteen_o or_o last_o argument_n which_o they_o usual_o make_v for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o their_o corrupt_a doctrine_n touch_v doubt_v which_o though_o it_o come_v in_o the_o last_o place_n have_v as_o little_a force_n as_o any_o of_o the_o former_a if_o not_o less_o and_o they_o frame_v it_o after_o this_o manner_n the_o doctrine_n that_o beget_v or_o brinforth_o carnal_a carelessness_n and_o fleshly_a security_n be_v not_o to_o be_v common_o propound_v and_o deliver_v to_o the_o people_n the_o doctrine_n that_o teach_v certainty_n and_o assurance_n of_o salvation_n and_o god_n grace_n concern_v the_o same_o and_o manifold_a favour_n beside_o in_o very_a many_o beget_v and_o bring_v forth_o carnal_a security_n therefore_o though_o it_o be_v true_a in_o itself_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o to_o deliver_v unto_o the_o people_n we_o answer_v first_o unto_o affirm_v of_o all_o other_o doctrine_n of_o the_o like_a nature_n but_o if_o there_o be_v any_o true_a and_o holy_a doctrine_n upon_o which_o this_o blame_n light_v or_o be_v say_v through_o the_o malice_n and_o transgression_n of_o man_n or_o by_o occasion_n as_o we_o say_v or_o through_o the_o fault_n negligence_n or_o ignorance_n of_o they_o that_o abuse_v it_o or_o be_v offend_v at_o it_o or_o by_o it_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n it_o shall_v be_v silent_a or_o dumb_a as_o we_o may_v say_v then_o that_o the_o sun_n shall_v be_v take_v from_o we_o because_o it_o annoy_v sore_a eye_n yea_o sometime_o increase_v the_o infection_n of_o the_o plague_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o bad_a body_n that_o be_v taint_v therewith_o or_o that_o meat_n and_o drink_n shall_v be_v with_o hold_v from_o all_o because_o some_o eat_v to_o surffet_v and_o drink_n to_o drunkenness_n to_o make_v this_o plain_a by_o some_o example_n out_o of_o the_o word_n what_o be_v more_o sweet_a than_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o yet_o because_o some_o turn_n it_o into_o wantonness_n as_o in_o the_o apostle_n time_n and_o our_o day_n shall_v it_o not_o therefore_o be_v hear_v sound_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n what_o be_v more_o comfortable_a than_o the_o doctrine_n of_o forgiunesse_fw-fr of_o sin_n through_o christ_n obedience_n and_o yet_o because_o some_o then_o and_o now_o adays_o also_o hear_v this_o that_o where_o sin_n have_v abound_v there_o grace_n have_v abound_v much_o more_o do_v and_o do_v shameless_o and_o graceles_o utter_v these_o word_n let_v we_o continue_v in_o sin_n that_o grace_n may_v abound_v shall_v not_o therefore_o this_o be_v propound_v unto_o the_o people_n the_o like_a may_v we_o say_v of_o this_o point_n controvert_v it_o be_v to_o much_o indignity_n and_o dishonour_n offer_v unto_o god_n to_o make_v his_o truth_n subject_a unto_o man_n corruption_n and_o it_o be_v to_o much_o injury_n and_o injustice_n to_o man_n special_o to_o not_o abolish_v the_o doctrine_n itself_o because_o it_o be_v sure_a and_o permanent_a even_o as_o god_n the_o author_n thereof_o be_v &_o can_v be_v better_v or_o make_v worse_o be_v humane_a corruption_n special_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o it_o own_o nature_n so_o this_o be_v certain_a also_o that_o in_o all_o godly_a wisdom_n and_o understanding_n rather_o the_o abuse_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v take_v away_o than_o the_o doctrine_n itself_o with_o hold_v or_o if_o that_o can_v be_v yet_o the_o same_o deliver_v with_o such_o holy_a caution_n as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o ungodly_a that_o they_o be_v charge_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n but_o to_o lay_v unclean_a or_o violent_a hand_n upon_o the_o sacred_a truth_n of_o god_n not_o belong_v unto_o they_o and_o such_o comfort_n to_o the_o godly_a that_o it_o shall_v rather_o speak_v in_o a_o clear_a and_o loud_a voice_n then_o be_v mute_a and_o dumb_a as_o we_o say_v in_o the_o church_n and_o this_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v god_n own_o ordinance_n and_o therefore_o shall_v prevail_v it_o be_v more_o equal_a in_o all_o upright_a judgement_n and_o therefore_o also_o to_o be_v embrace_v to_o the_o minor_a affirm_v that_o the_o doctrine_n teach_v certainty_n of_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n make_v man_n secure_a and_o careless_a we_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v not_o so_o if_o they_o consider_v the_o doctrine_n either_o as_o it_o come_v from_o god_n or_o in_o itself_o or_o own_o nature_n for_o so_o it_o give_v great_a glory_n unto_o god_n to_o who_o alone_o belong_v mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o minister_v much_o comfort_n unto_o we_o while_o the_o assurance_n of_o these_o thing_n as_o we_o see_v by_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o doctrine_n depend_v not_o upon_o ourselves_o but_o upon_o god_n alone_o otherwise_o if_o they_o regard_v it_o in_o the_o fault_n of_o man_n abuse_v the_o same_o as_o we_o will_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o some_o there_o be_v that_o so_o abuse_v it_o so_o yet_o we_o can_v consent_v unto_o this_o that_o for_o this_o their_o foul_a fault_n and_o sin_n other_o man_n that_o have_v better_a grace_n shall_v be_v punish_v with_o the_o want_n or_o lack_v of_o this_o truth_n of_o god_n no_o more_o than_o we_o will_v approve_v of_o this_o that_o because_o in_o some_o great_a person_n house_n one_o be_v give_v to_o drunkenness_n and_o another_o to_o adversary_n have_v not_o nor_o can_v any_o manner_n of_o way_n have_v such_o hold_n of_o he_o or_o from_o he_o as_o they_o suppose_v and_o the_o like_a may_v we_o say_v of_o all_o the_o rest_n who_o authority_n we_o cease_v further_a to_o answer_v as_o we_o because_o that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v to_o these_o will_v suffice_v to_o satisfy_v the_o other_o as_o also_o because_o we_o will_v avoid_v tediousness_n not_o only_o in_o matter_n unnecessary_a but_o even_o also_o in_o that_o which_o be_v necessary_a and_o so_o make_v haste_n to_o more_o material_a point_n and_o matter_n of_o more_o weight_n and_o importance_n hitherto_o we_o have_v be_v busy_v and_o i_o hope_v not_o unprofitable_o in_o answer_v whatsoever_o our_o adversary_n have_v be_v able_a to_o allege_v either_o out_o of_o scripture_n or_o from_o reason_n or_o father_n against_o the_o certainty_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n touch_v our_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n or_o for_o the_o maintenance_n and_o uphold_v of_o that_o doubtfulness_n and_o distrust_n which_o they_o hold_v in_o themselves_o and_o will_v obtrude_v or_o thrust_v unto_o other_o by_o all_o which_o it_o plain_o and_o evident_o appear_v that_o that_o doctrine_n of_o they_o concern_v doubt_v be_v not_o contain_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o the_o writing_n of_o the_o father_n right_o understand_v or_o be_v ground_v upon_o any_o sound_n or_o religious_a reason_n and_o that_o therefore_o indeed_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v account_v a_o scripture_n doctrine_n or_o a_o doctrine_n contain_v in_o the_o book_n and_o write_n of_o holy_a man_n endue_v with_o sound_n and_o upright_o judgement_n but_o be_v take_v rather_o as_o a_o dream_n and_o fantasy_n of_o their_o own_o which_o together_o with_o with_o they_o will_v vanish_v away_o they_o be_v so_o far_o of_o their_o preiudise_v the_o truth_n which_o they_o have_v seem_v to_o oppugn_v and_o impugn_v that_o they_o have_v rather_o establish_v and_o confirm_v the_o same_o so_o true_a here_o and_o else_o where_o even_o in_o all_o respect_n must_v that_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n saint_n paul_n speak_v in_o the_o second_o to_o the_o corinthian_n the_o thirteen_o where_o he_o say_v we_o can_v do_v any_o thing_n against_o the_o truth_n but_o for_o the_o truth_n now_o we_o be_v in_o as_o few_o word_n as_o possible_o we_o can_v to_o declare_v that_o this_o their_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v direct_o strive_v against_o god_n holy_a word_n &_o the_o writing_n of_o the_o founder_n father_n religion_n reason_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o we_o can_v reckon_v up_o that_o so_o when_o we_o see_v it_o have_v not_o only_o nothing_o for_o it_o but_o all_o against_o it_o we_o may_v cast_v it_o away_o with_o biss_v and_o so_o more_o sound_o cleave_v and_o stick_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n and_o his_o word_n 1_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o papist_n concern_v doubt_v of_o god_n grace_n our_o own_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n be_v first_o direct_o contrary_a to_o two_o sort_n of_o testimony_n contain_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n or_o write_n of_o god_n the_o first_o sort_n be_v of_o they_o that_o do_v manifest_o and_o &_o plain_o instruct_v we_o concern_v the_o assuredness_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o certainty_n confidency_n and_o boldness_n of_o believer_n show_v also_o withal_o that_o by_o faith_n and_o the_o sound_a fruit_n thereof_o we_o may_v safe_o judge_v and_o determine_v concern_v election_n special_o our_o own_o the_o second_o sort_n be_v of_o they_o in_o which_o god_n himself_o by_o his_o word_n and_o spirit_n have_v sharp_o reproove_v and_o just_o condemn_v doubt_v concern_v himself_o his_o goodness_n power_n word_n &_o promise_n therein_o contain_v to_o put_v down_o all_o the_o particular_a place_n of_o both_o kind_n in_o the_o very_a word_n of_o the_o text_n will_v be_v tedious_a and_o indeed_o unnecessary_a because_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n stand_v not_o in_o the_o multitude_n and_o conformity_n of_o place_n but_o upon_o god_n and_o that_o sufficient_a credit_n in_o itself_o that_o god_n have_v give_v to_o it_o notwithstanding_o we_o will_v touch_v some_o and_o by_o quotation_n only_o refer_v the_o godly_a and_o studious_a reader_n to_o the_o the_o rest_n that_o we_o think_v meet_v for_o this_o purpose_n and_o to_o his_o continual_a read_n of_o the_o word_n by_o which_o we_o may_v doubtless_o add_v many_o more_o of_o the_o like_a nature_n in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebreve_n there_o be_v two_o worthy_a place_n the_o 1._o be_v chap._n 4._o v._n 16._o where_o he_o say_v let_v we_o bold_o go_v therefore_o unto_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n that_o we_o may_v receive_v mercy_n and_o find_v grace_n to_o help_v in_o time_n of_o need_n we_o may_v perceive_v that_o it_o be_v a_o exhortation_n infer_v upon_o the_o premise_n contain_v in_o they_o a_o reason_n of_o this_o our_o christian_n boldness_n namely_o this_o that_o howsoever_o christ_n world_n may_v fantasy_n and_o imagine_v some_o such_o matter_n yet_o they_o can_v feel_v it_o or_o be_v indeed_o thorough_o persuade_v of_o it_o not_o only_o because_o god_n say_v by_o the_o prophet_n be_v promise_v therefore_o from_o this_o that_o god_n have_v promise_v we_o salvation_n it_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o we_o present_o lie_v hold_v thereon_o and_o therefore_o we_o can_v from_o the_o promise_n that_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o concern_v our_o salvation_n conclude_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v sure_o concern_v it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v already_o accomplish_v and_o perform_v god_n and_o his_o favour_n or_o hatred_n there_o be_v not_o in_o this_o part_n of_o the_o text_n any_o of_o the_o name_n whereby_o god_n be_v call_v in_o the_o old_a testament_n but_o before_o we_o come_v to_o deliver_v that_o which_o we_o take_v to_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o spirit_n here_o i_o think_v that_o even_o the_o text_n as_o they_o turn_v it_o will_v not_o evince_v that_o
