himself_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o be_v outward_o to_o act_v neither_o do_v they_o draw_v he_o to_o the_o desire_n of_o a_o inordinate_a inclination_n but_o he_o order_v they_o according_a to_o knowledge_n of_o we_o be_v without_o some_o darkness_n a_o humble_a knowledge_n of_o thyself_o be_v a_o sure_a way_n to_o god_n than_o a_o deep_a search_n after_o learning_n yet_o learning_n be_v not_o to_o be_v blame_v nor_o the_o mere_a knowledge_n of_o any_o thing_n whatsoever_o to_o be_v dislike_v it_o be_v good_a in_o itself_o and_o ordain_v by_o god_n but_o a_o good_a conscience_n and_o a_o virtuous_a life_n be_v always_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o it_o but_o because_o many_o endeavour_n rather_o to_o get_v knowledge_n than_o to_o live_v well_o therefore_o they_o be_v often_o deceive_v and_o reap_v either_o none_o or_o very_o slender_a profit_n of_o their_o labour_n 5._o o_o if_o man_n bestow_v as_o much_o labour_n in_o the_o root_n out_o of_o vice_n and_o plant_v of_o virtue_n as_o they_o do_v in_o move_v of_o question_n neither_o will_v there_o so_o much_o hurt_v be_v do_v nor_o so_o great_a scandal_n be_v give_v in_o the_o world_n nor_o so_o much_o looseness_n be_v practise_v in_o religious_a house_n true_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n we_o shall_v not_o be_v examine_v what_o we_o have_v read_v but_o what_o we_o have_v do_v not_o how_o well_o we_o have_v speak_v but_o how_o religious_o we_o have_v live_v tell_v i_o now_o where_o be_v all_o those_o doctor_n and_o master_n with_o who_o thou_o be_v well_o acquaint_v whilst_o they_o live_v and_o flourish_v in_o learning_n now_o other_o possess_v their_o live_n and_o perhaps_o do_v scarce_o ever_o think_v of_o they_o in_o their_o life-time_n they_o seem_v something_o but_o now_o they_o be_v not_o speak_v of_o 6._o o_o how_o quick_o do_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o world_n pass_v away_o o_o that_o their_o life_n have_v be_v answerable_a to_o their_o learning_n then_o have_v their_o study_n and_o read_v be_v to_o good_a purpose_n how_o many_o perish_v in_o this_o world_n by_o reason_n of_o vain-learning_n who_o take_v little_a care_n of_o the_o serve_v of_o god_n and_o because_o they_o rather_o choose_v to_o be_v great_a than_o humble_a therefore_o they_o become_v vain_a in_o their_o imagination_n he_o be_v true_o great_a that_o be_v great_a in_o charity_n he_o be_v true_o great_a that_o be_v little_a in_o himself_o and_o that_o make_v no_o account_n of_o any_o height_n of_o honour_n he_o be_v true_o wise_a that_o account_v all_o earthly_a thing_n as_o dung_n that_o he_o may_v gain_v christ._n and_o he_o be_v true_o learn_v that_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o forsake_v his_o own_o will_n chap._n iu._n of_o wisdom_n and_o providence_n in_o our_o action_n we_o must_v not_o give_v ear_n to_o every_o say_n or_o suggestion_n but_o ought_v wary_o and_o leisurely_o to_o ponder_v thing_n according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n but_o alas_o such_o be_v our_o weakness_n when_o any_o opposition_n be_v make_v against_o he_o 2._o and_o if_o he_o have_v follow_v therein_o his_o appetite_n he_o be_v present_o disquiet_v with_o remorse_n of_o conscience_n for_o that_o he_o yield_v to_o his_o passion_n which_o profit_v he_o nothing_o to_o the_o obtain_n of_o the_o peace_n he_o seek_v for_o true_a quietness_n of_o heart_n therefore_o be_v get_v by_o resist_v our_o passion_n not_o by_o obey_v they_o there_o be_v no_o peace_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o carnal_a man_n nor_o of_o he_o that_o be_v addict_v to_o outward_a thing_n but_o in_o the_o spiritual_a and_o fervent_a man._n chap._n vii_o of_o fly_v vain_a hope_n and_o pride_n he_o be_v vain_a that_o put_v his_o trust_n in_o man_n or_o creature_n be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o serve_v other_o for_o the_o love_n of_o jesus_n christ_n nor_o to_o be_v esteem_v poor_a in_o this_o world_n presume_v not_o upon_o thyself_o but_o place_v thy_o hope_n in_o god_n do_v what_o lie_v in_o thy_o power_n and_o god_n will_v assist_v thy_o good_a affection_n trust_v not_o in_o thy_o own_o knowledge_n nor_o in_o the_o subtlety_n of_o any_o live_a creature_n but_o rather_o in_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n who_o help_v the_o humble_a and_o humble_v those_o that_o be_v self-presuming_a 2._o glory_n not_o in_o wealth_n if_o thou_o have_v it_o nor_o in_o friend_n because_o potent_a but_o in_o god_n who_o give_v all_o thing_n and_o above_o all_o desire_v to_o give_v thou_o himself_o
on_o the_o contrary_a how_o pitiful_a and_o grievous_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o see_v they_o that_o live_v in_o a_o dissolute_a and_o disorder_a sort_n not_o apply_v themselves_o to_o that_o for_o which_o they_o be_v call_v o_o how_o hurtful_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o neglect_v the_o good_a purpose_n of_o their_o vocation_n and_o to_o busy_v themselves_o in_o that_o which_o be_v not_o commit_v to_o their_o care_n 6._o be_v mindful_a of_o the_o profession_n thou_o have_v make_v and_o have_v always_o before_o the_o eye_n of_o thy_o soul_n the_o remembrance_n of_o thy_o saviour_n crucify_v thou_o have_v good_a cause_n to_o be_v ashamed_a look_v upon_o the_o life_n of_o jesus_n christ_n see_v thou_o have_v as_o yet_o no_o more_o endeavour_v to_o conform_v thyself_o unto_o he_o though_o thou_o have_v walk_v a_o long_a time_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n a_o religious_a person_n that_o exercise_v himself_o serious_o and_o devout_o in_o the_o most_o holy_a life_n and_o passion_n of_o our_o lord_n shall_v there_o abundant_o find_v whatsoever_o be_v necessary_a and_o profitable_a for_o he_o neither_o shall_v he_o need_v to_o seek_v any_o better_a thing_n out_o of_o jesus_n o_o if_o jesus_n crucify_v will_v come_v into_o our_o heart_n how_o quick_o and_o full_o shall_v we_o be_v instruct_v in_o all_o truth_n 7._o a_o fervent_a religious_a person_n take_v and_o bear_v all_o well_o that_o be_v command_v he_o but_o he_o that_o be_v negligent_a and_o cold_a have_v tribulation_n upon_o tribulation_n and_o on_o all_o side_n be_v afflict_v for_o he_o be_v void_a of_o inward_a consolation_n and_o be_v forbid_v to_o seek_v eternal_a comfort_n a_o religious_a person_n that_o live_v not_o according_a to_o discipline_n lie_v open_a to_o great_a mischief_n to_o the_o ruin_n of_o his_o soul._n he_o that_o seek_v liberty_n and_o ease_n shall_v ever_o live_v in_o disquiet_n for_o one_o thing_n or_o other_o will_v displease_v he_o 8._o o_o that_o we_o have_v nothing_o elso_n to_o do_v but_o always_o with_o our_o mouth_n and_o whole_a heart_n to_o praise_v our_o lord_n god_n o_o that_o thou_o may_v never_o have_v need_n to_o eat_v nor_o drink_v nor_o sleep_n but_o may_v always_o praise_v god_n and_o only_o employ_v thyself_o in_o spiritual_a exercise_n thou_o shall_v then_o be_v much_o more_o happy_a than_o now_o thou_o be_v when_o for_o so_o many_o necessity_n thou_o be_v constrain_v to_o serve_v thy_o body_n will_v god_n these_o necessity_n be_v not_o at_o all_o but_o only_o the_o spiritual_a refection_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o alas_o we_o taste_v of_o too_o seldom_o 9_o when_o a_o man_n come_v to_o that_o estate_n rhat_o he_o seek_v not_o his_o comfort_n from_o any_o creature_n then_o do_v he_o begin_v perfect_o to_o relish_v god_n then_o shall_v he_o be_v content_v with_o whatsoever_o do_v befall_v he_o in_o this_o world_n then_o shall_v he_o neither_o rejoice_v in_o great_a matter_n nor_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o small_a but_o entire_o and_o confident_o commit_v himself_o to_o god_n who_o shall_v be_v unto_o he_o all_o in_o all_o to_o who_o nothing_o do_v perish_v nor_o die_v but_o all_o thing_n do_v live_v unto_o in_o the_o evening_n if_o thou_o spend_v the_o day_n profitable_o be_v watchful_a over_o thyself_o stir_v up_o thyself_o warn_v thyself_o and_o whatsoever_o become_v of_o other_o neglect_v not_o may_v vouchsafe_v to_o come_v unto_o thou_o and_o dwell_v within_o thou_o for_o he_o say_v if_o any_o love_v i_o he_o will_v keep_v my_o word_n and_o we_o will_v come_v unto_o he_o and_o will_v make_v our_o abode_n with_o he_o give_v therefore_o admittance_n unto_o christ_n and_o deny_v entrance_n to_o all_o other_o when_o thou_o have_v christ_n thou_o be_v rich_a and_o he_o will_v suffice_v thou_o unto_o christ_n without_o cease_v if_o thou_o can_v not_o contemplate_v high_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n rest_v thyself_o in_o the_o passion_n of_o christ_n and_o dwell_v willing_o in_o his_o holy_a wound_n for_o if_o thou_o fly_v devout_o unto_o the_o wound_n and_o precious_a mark_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n thou_o shall_v feel_v great_a comfort_n in_o tribulation_n neither_o will_v thou_o much_o care_n for_o be_v despise_v of_o man_n and_o will_v easy_o bear_v word_n of_o detraction_n 5._o christ_n be_v also_o in_o the_o world_n despise_v of_o man_n and_o in_o great_a necessity_n forsake_v by_o his_o acquaintance_n and_o friend_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o slander_n christ_n will_v suffer_v and_o be_v despise_v and_o dare_v thou_o complain_v of_o any_o christ_n have_v adversary_n and_o backbiter_n and_o will_v thou_o have_v all_o man_n thy_o friend_n and_o benefactor_n for_o what_o shall_v thy_o patience_n be_v crown_v if_o no_o adversity_n happen_v unto_o thou_o if_o thou_o will_v suffer_v no_o adversity_n how_o will_v thou_o be_v the_o friend_n of_o christ_n suffer_v with_o christ_n and_o for_o christ_n if_o thou_o desire_v to_o reign_v with_o christ._n 6._o if_o thou_o in_o their_o conceit_n and_o those_o which_o the_o illuminate_v one_o do_v see_v by_o revelation_n from_o above_o 7._o beware_v therefore_o my_o son_n that_o thou_o treat_v not_o curious_o of_o these_o thing_n which_o exceed_v thy_o knowledge_n but_o rather_o so_o apply_v thy_o endeavour_n that_o thou_o may_v at_o least_o have_v the_o mean_a place_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o
