endure_v in_o storm_n at_o sea_n and_o hazard_n there_o and_o trouble_n at_o land_n many_o way_n for_o thing_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o sit_v up_o late_o and_o rise_v early_o and_o toil_n themselves_o and_o complain_v of_o no_o weariness_n nor_o no_o difficulty_n but_o now_o let_v they_o come_v but_o to_o spiritual_a thing_n to_o soul-business_n that_o concern_v god_n and_o their_o spiritual_a estate_n every_o little_a difficulty_n put_v they_o aside_o and_o discourage_v they_o every_o molehill_n be_v a_o mountain_n in_o their_o way_n i_o will_v do_v so_o and_o so_o indeed_o but_o it_o be_v of_o it_o and_o confer_v about_o it_o and_o when_o you_o come_v again_o attend_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o so_o spend_v the_o whole_a day_n in_o hear_v read_v meditate_v and_o conference_n about_o good_a thing_n call_v your_o family_n to_o account_v and_o pray_v again_o and_o see_v how_o tiresome_a this_o will_v be_v unto_o your_o heart_n if_o they_o be_v carnal_a but_o now_o a_o spiritual_a heart_n will_v call_v the_o sabbath_n a_o delight_n unto_o it_o and_o the_o sabbath_n unto_o such_o a_o one_o be_v no_o other_o than_o that_o type_n and_o before_o runner_n of_o that_o eternal_a day_n so_o bright_a as_o the_o star_n nor_o be_v they_o of_o such_o a_o heavenly_a nature_n as_o the_o star_n they_o be_v but_o make_v of_o a_o few_o unclean_a vapour_n that_o come_v out_o of_o the_o earth_n which_o be_v get_v up_o near_o the_o heaven_n do_v make_v a_o show_n as_o if_o they_o be_v some_o star_n in_o heaven_n but_o you_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o the_o even_o like_o the_o star_n of_o heaven_n they_o seem_v to_o be_v get_v above_o other_o your_o blaze_a star_n a_o child_n will_v think_v it_o a_o great_a deal_n big_a than_o one_o of_o the_o star_n that_o be_v a_o hundred_o time_n big_a than_o that_o be_v so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o hypocrite_n they_o have_v a_o great_a show_n of_o religion_n than_o many_o that_o have_v truth_n of_o godliness_n great_a noise_n in_o their_o heart_n they_o be_v busy_v in_o the_o world_n even_o while_o they_o be_v hear_v of_o the_o word_n as_o you_o find_v it_o in_o the_o 33._o of_o ezek._n 31._o ver_fw-la there_o be_v a_o notable_a description_n i_o fear_v it_o may_v be_v of_o many_o of_o you_o and_o they_o come_v unto_o thou_o say_v the_o lord_n to_o the_o prophet_n as_o the_o people_n come_v and_o they_o sit_v before_o thou_o as_o my_o people_n and_o they_o hear_v thy_o word_n but_o they_o will_v not_o do_v they_o for_o with_o their_o mouth_n they_o show_v much_o love_n but_o their_o heart_n he_o that_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o the_o care_n of_o this_o world_n and_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o riches_n choke_v the_o word_n and_o it_o become_v unfruitful_a i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o these_o that_o our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o here_o in_o this_o parable_n that_o get_v no_o benefit_n by_o the_o word_n be_v not_o man_n that_o live_v lewd_o your_o drunkard_n swearer_n and_o whoremaster_n but_o those_o that_o have_v earthly_a heart_n it_o be_v say_v the_o deceitfulness_n of_o riches_n the_o thing_n of_o the_o earth_n do_v not_o hinder_v in_o a_o open_a way_n for_o of_o riches_n and_o the_o care_n of_o this_o world_n choke_v the_o word_n when_o they_o come_v they_o have_v business_n about_o the_o world_n and_o their_o house_n and_o garden_n and_o come_n in_o and_o full_a table_n and_o all_o the_o delight_n that_o they_o have_v in_o the_o world_n come_v and_o possess_v the_o heart_n that_o the_o word_n be_v choke_v it_o can_v get_v down_o into_o the_o soul_n to_o sink_v in_o there_o and_o so_o to_o prevail_v in_o the_o soul_n to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n oh_o the_o word_n be_v choke_v oh_o many_o of_o you_o come_v here_o three_o time_n on_o the_o lord_n day_n and_o have_v precious_a seed_n sow_v all_o those_o time_n and_o yet_o oh_o how_o it_o be_v choke_v through_o the_o care_n of_o this_o world_n and_o through_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n you_o bring_v with_o you_o and_o keep_v with_o you_o and_o carry_v along_o with_o you_o earthly_a mind_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o word_n prevail_v not_o with_o your_o heart_n oh_o what_o do_v you_o loose_v through_o this_o earthliness_n you_o lose_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n that_o shall_v save_v your_o soul_n a_o spiritual_a heart_n have_v be_v get_v into_o the_o world_n and_o find_v the_o sweetness_n of_o it_o come_v in_o oh_o then_o the_o word_n have_v be_v choke_v to_o they_o and_o they_o have_v lose_v the_o savour_n they_o have_v in_o the_o word_n they_o have_v lose_v the_o relish_n of_o the_o word_n it_o be_v not_o now_o sweet_a to_o they_o as_o former_o it_o have_v be_v oh_o many_o example_n there_o have_v be_v this_o way_n that_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n of_o earthly-mindednesse_a that_o it_o do_v hinder_v the_o great_a benefit_n of_o the_o word_n and_o there_o be_v much_o evil_n in_o this_o if_o you_o have_v heart_n to_o receive_v what_o be_v deliver_v your_o heart_n will_v tremble_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o this_o oh_o lord_n what_o shall_v i_o be_v hinder_v from_o profit_v by_o this_o word_n it_o be_v the_o great_a blessing_n of_o god_n to_o the_o world_n it_o be_v that_o that_o must_v save_v my_o soul_n there_o be_v more_o worth_n in_o it_o than_o ten_o thousand_o world_n whatsoever_o shall_v hinder_v my_o profit_v by_o thy_o word_n i_o have_v need_n take_v heed_n of_o it_o take_v heed_n of_o earthly-mindednesse_a many_o of_o your_o conscience_n can_v but_o tell_v you_o this_o sometime_o any_o business_n will_v keep_v a_o earthly-minded_n man_n from_o come_v to_o the_o word_n and_o when_o he_o do_v come_v there_o be_v earth_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o ear_n that_o keep_v he_o from_o attend_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o when_o thy_o thought_n be_v about_o earthly_a thing_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o a_o sermon_n it_o may_v be_v there_o be_v some_o truth_n pass_v by_o thy_o soul_n that_o may_v have_v save_v thou_o eternal_o and_o thou_o have_v lose_v that_o opportunity_n which_o perhaps_o thou_o shall_v never_o have_v again_o the_o seven_o evil_a open_v in_o six_o particular_n further_o righteous_a we_o shall_v observe_v the_o way_n of_o good_a man_n &_o keep_v the_o path_n of_o the_o righteous_a it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o example_n of_o the_o best_a man_n though_o never_o so_o holy_a be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a rule_n for_o any_o action_n if_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n do_v any_o thing_n though_o it_o be_v never_o so_o good_a mere_o upon_o the_o example_n of_o another_o man_n yet_o this_o that_o they_o do_v will_v prove_v sin_n to_o they_o i_o say_v though_o the_o thing_n be_v good_a &_o thou_o do_v it_o upon_o the_o example_n of_o other_o good_a man_n yet_o if_o that_o be_v all_o thy_o rule_n the_o action_n will_v be_v sin_n to_o thou_o for_o that_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o christ_n to_o we_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n be_v sin_n now_o no_o example_n can_v be_v a_o ground_n sufficient_a for_o faith_n therefore_o example_n alone_o be_v not_o a_o good_a rule_n yea_o and_o sometime_o we_o know_v that_o satan_n himself_o may_v transform_v himself_o into_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n and_o may_v for_o the_o prevail_a of_o some_o evil_n make_v a_o great_a show_n of_o some_o holiness_n and_o so_o many_o gross_a hypocrite_n for_o a_o time_n have_v have_v much_o seem_a holiness_n in_o their_o life_n and_o therefore_o it_o must_v be_v take_v for_o a_o certain_a truth_n that_o the_o example_n of_o man_n never_o so_o holy_a be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a rule_n but_o yet_o thus_o far_o example_n of_o man_n that_o be_v holy_a shall_v prevail_v with_o we_o first_o they_o shall_v prevail_v with_o we_o more_o than_o other_o example_n than_o example_n of_o the_o most_o learned_a man_n let_v man_n be_v never_o so_o great_a rabbi_n the_o example_n of_o one_o holy_a man_n who_o conversation_n be_v in_o heaven_n shall_v be_v more_o to_o we_o than_o the_o example_n of_o many_o scholar_n for_o many_o man_n that_o be_v learned_a may_v be_v very_o corrupt_a they_o may_v go_v against_o their_o own_o conscience_n as_o certain_o many_o do_v 1._o it_o shall_v you_o have_v a_o notable_a scripture_n there_o against_o follow_v of_o multitude_n of_o man_n you_o may_v see_v there_o that_o multitude_n go_v to_o destruction_n multitude_n multitude_n in_o the_o valley_n of_o decision_n 3._o it_o shall_v be_v more_o than_o the_o example_n of_o those_o that_o be_v mere_o relate_v unto_o we_o as_o child_n shall_v rather_o look_v at_o the_o example_n of_o godly_a man_n and_o woman_n though_o they_o be_v stranger_n than_o of_o father_n or_o mother_n or_o uncle_n or_o aunt_n or_o the_o near_a kindred_n though_o their_o example_n be_v not_o rule_n for_o our_o faith_n yet_o they_o shall_v be_v more_o than_o the_o example_n of_o any_o other_o second_o though_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v rule_n or_o ground_n of_o faith_n yet_o they_o shall_v be_v enough_o to_o take_v off_o prejudices_fw-la that_o come_v from_o accusation_n of_o man_n if_o man_n will_v accuse_v the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o prejudices_fw-la take_v up_o against_o the_o path_n of_o zion_n without_o ground_n the_o example_n of_o godly_a man_n shall_v be_v enough_o to_o make_v we_o stand_v out_o against_o they_o it_o may_v be_v you_o hear_v many_o cry_v out_o bitter_o against_o such_o a_o way_n of_o worship_n and_o many_o false_a aspersion_n be_v cast_v upon_o it_o because_o it_o be_v not_o a_o national_a way_n of_o worship_n for_o few_o there_o be_v that_o follow_v it_o now_o do_v but_o observe_v what_o manner_n of_o person_n do_v worship_n god_n in_o that_o way_n which_o some_o call_v heresy_n be_v they_o not_o of_o holy_a and_o blameless_a conversation_n according_a to_o the_o gospel_n the_o strict_a puritan_n now_o though_o you_o must_v not_o do_v as_o they_o do_v mere_o from_o their_o example_n yet_o their_o example_n shall_v have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o power_n and_o influence_n upon_o you_o to_o take_v off_o prejudices_fw-la and_o answer_v accusation_n and_o to_o calm_v and_o sweeten_v your_o angry_a and_o bitter_a spirit_n three_o example_n though_o not_o sufficient_a ground_n and_o rule_v for_o faith_n yet_o they_o shall_v be_v enough_o to_o make_v we_o to_o inquire_v after_o those_o way_n and_o to_o examine_v and_o try_v whether_o they_o have_v any_o foot_n in_o the_o word_n because_o the_o follower_n of_o they_o be_v very_o upright_o and_o circumspect_a in_o their_o way_n let_v i_o at_o least_o inquire_v after_o these_o way_n let_v i_o examine_v they_o by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n sure_o there_o be_v some_o probability_n that_o these_o way_n be_v the_o very_a path_n of_o zion_n and_o lead_v to_o the_o gate_n of_o heaven_n because_o the_o professor_n of_o they_o be_v such_o friend_n of_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v likely_a that_o these_o man_n shall_v know_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n that_o do_v converse_v with_o god_n most_o that_o lie_v in_o his_o bosom_n as_o the_o belove_a disciple_n in_o christ_n be_v it_o not_o more_o likely_a that_o a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o familiar_a friend_n and_o converse_v daily_o with_o such_o a_o one_o that_o this_o man_n shall_v know_v his_o secret_n his_o will_n rather_o than_o a_o stranger_n so_o all_o man_n in_o the_o world_n be_v stranger_n to_o god_n but_o only_o the_o saint_n they_o converse_v with_o god_n they_o be_v the_o man_n of_o his_o counsel_n and_o his_o heart_n and_o therefore_o of_o all_o man_n in_o the_o world_n it_o be_v most_o likely_a that_o they_o shall_v have_v all_o the_o will_n of_o god_n reveal_v unto_o they_o all_o learning_n and_o natural_a wisdom_n can_v show_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n so_o much_o as_o converse_v with_o god_n and_o a_o holy_a humble_a familiarity_n with_o he_o god_n love_v to_o open_v his_o bosom_n to_o his_o hidden_a one_o to_o reveal_v his_o mind_n to_o they_o and_o therefore_o when_o we_o see_v man_n that_o be_v godly_a who_o conversation_n be_v in_o heaven_n that_o they_o walk_v in_o such_o and_o such_o way_n it_o shall_v make_v we_o to_o think_v it_o be_v like_o there_o be_v more_o good_a in_o these_o way_n than_o i_o be_o aware_a of_o at_o the_o present_a it_o be_v like_a that_o such_o man_n as_o god_n smile_v upon_o that_o they_o shall_v know_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n more_o than_o other_o man_n therefore_o though_o i_o will_v not_o present_o conclude_v it_o be_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n and_o do_v it_o mere_o because_o they_o do_v it_o yet_o i_o will_v examine_v and_o search_v whether_o it_o be_v not_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n or_o no_o according_a to_o the_o scripture_n four_o the_o example_n of_o godly_a man_n shall_v prevail_v thus_o far_o to_o make_v we_o to_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o do_v not_o oppose_v those_o way_n except_o we_o have_v very_o clear_a ground_n to_o the_o contrary_a then_o we_o may_v oppose_v they_o as_o paul_n oppose_v peter_n and_o resist_v he_o to_o the_o face_n because_o he_o do_v not_o go_v in_o a_o right_a way_n let_v man_n be_v never_o so_o holy_a and_o godly_a yet_o they_o may_v be_v oppose_v in_o their_o way_n if_o upon_o any_o examination_n you_o see_v clear_o this_o be_v not_o the_o way_n of_o god_n i_o find_v it_o to_o be_v otherwise_o not_o other_o think_v it_o be_v not_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o such_o and_o such_o be_v of_o a_o contrary_a mind_n no_o but_o i_o have_v be_v examine_v it_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o lay_v the_o rule_n to_o my_o conscience_n and_o my_o conscience_n to_o that_o and_o i_o find_v it_o to_o be_v disagree_v to_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n than_o you_o may_v speak_v or_o write_v against_o it_o but_o do_v it_o not_o otherwise_o if_o you_o see_v man_n holy_a man_n who_o conversation_n be_v in_o heaven_n do_v oppose_v it_o because_o man_n do_v be_v sure_a your_o ground_n be_v good_a and_o you_o be_v clear_a in_o it_o if_o you_o do_v oppose_v it_o otherwise_o you_o may_v be_v in_o danger_n of_o fight_v against_o god_n when_o you_o oppose_v they_o therefore_o make_v so_o much_o use_v of_o the_o example_n of_o godly_a holy_a man_n as_o not_o to_o oppose_v the_o way_n but_o upon_o clear_a scripture-evidence_n to_o the_o contrary_n five_o the_o example_n of_o godly_a man_n shall_v prevail_v thus_o far_o with_o we_o as_o to_o prepare_v we_o to_o let_v in_o any_o truth_n that_o they_o do_v profess_v and_o practise_v when_o we_o come_v to_o examine_v what_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n
the_o lord_n will_v condemn_v you_o from_o their_o example_n and_o say_v do_v not_o such_o and_o such_o live_v in_o the_o family_n and_o place_n where_o you_o live_v and_o do_v not_o you_o behold_v their_o holy_a and_o gracious_a conversation_n and_o shall_v the_o example_n of_o such_o and_o such_o vile_a wretch_n be_v follow_v rather_o than_o the_o example_n of_o my_o saint_n i_o say_v this_o will_v stop_v your_o mouth_n and_o aggravate_v your_o condemnation_n in_o the_o great_a audit-day_n some_o there_o be_v that_o be_v so_o far_o from_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o those_o who_o conversation_n be_v in_o heaven_n as_o they_o rage_n and_o fret_v against_o they_o and_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o darken_v the_o glory_n of_o their_o holy_a life_n and_o if_o they_o can_v but_o have_v any_o misreport_n of_o they_o they_o will_v follow_v it_o what_o possible_o they_o can_v to_o the_o end_n that_o they_o may_v eclipse_v the_o holiness_n of_o their_o life_n that_o so_o they_o may_v stop_v their_o own_o conscience_n whereas_o be_v there_o not_o something_o to_o darken_v the_o lustre_n and_o beauty_n of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o saint_n certain_o man_n heart_n will_v condemn_v they_o for_o walk_v in_o contrary_a way_n unto_o they_o and_o therefore_o for_o relief_n of_o their_o conscience_n that_o they_o may_v not_o condemn_v they_o for_o walk_v in_o way_n contrary_a to_o they_o they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o spew_v upon_o their_o glory_n and_o be_v glad_a if_o they_o can_v hear_v any_o ill_a report_n of_o they_o and_o will_v follow_v they_o to_o their_o uttermost_a and_o all_o because_o their_o corrupt_a heart_n be_v against_o the_o holiness_n of_o their_o life_n and_o conversation_n and_o then_o last_o let_v those_o that_o profess_v religion_n labour_n to_o walk_v so_o as_o their_o example_n may_v be_v convince_a other_o be_v there_o such_o a_o power_n in_o holy_a example_n to_o prevail_v with_o man_n you_o that_o profess_v religion_n make_v this_o a_o argument_n to_o work_v upon_o your_o heart_n that_o your_o conversation_n may_v be_v more_o in_o heaven_n that_o so_o your_o example_n may_v do_v the_o more_o good_a in_o the_o place_n where_o you_o live_v you_o that_o profess_v religion_n and_o yet_o have_v earthly_a spirit_n and_o live_v scandalouslie_o and_o vile_o oh_o know_v you_o live_v to_o do_v as_o much_o mischief_n almost_o as_o a_o man_n can_v do_v in_o this_o world_n no_o great_a mischief_n than_o for_o one_o to_o profess_v religion_n and_o yet_o for_o his_o conversation_n to_o be_v wicked_a and_o ungodly_a and_o so_o to_o give_v the_o lie_n to_o his_o profession_n but_o for_o that_o we_o speak_v to_o heretofore_o when_o we_o treat_v upon_o that_o scripture_n only_o let_v your_o conversation_n be_v as_o become_v the_o gospel_n chap._n iu._n two_o doctrine_n observe_v from_o the_o text._n thus_o we_o proceed_v to_o the_o principal_a doctrinal_a truth_n for_o our_o conversation_n be_v in_o heaven_n our_o city_n conversation_n our_o citizen-like_a behaviour_n or_o city_n burges_n estate_n for_o so_o the_o word_n signify_v our_o carriage_n like_o free_a denizen_n it_o be_v in_o heaven_n now_o from_o thence_o you_o have_v first_o that_o the_o saint_n be_v the_o citizen_n of_o heaven_n second_o that_o their_o behaviour_n and_o conversation_n even_o while_o they_o be_v in_o this_o world_n it_o be_v in_o heaven_n for_o the_o first_o but_o brief_o to_o make_v way_n to_o the_o second_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n they_o be_v the_o citizen_n of_o heaven_n they_o be_v all_o free_a denizen_n burgess_n of_o heaven_n in_o the_o 2._o ephes_n 19_o there_o you_o may_v see_v how_o god_n have_v gather_v all_o the_o saint_n together_o to_o be_v fellow-citizen_n of_o heaven_n now_o therefore_o you_o be_v no_o more_o stranger_n and_o foreigner_n but_o fellow_n citizen_n with_o the_o saint_n and_o of_o the_o household_n of_o god_n they_o have_v a_o heavenly_a city_n here_o in_o of_o his_o life_n than_o he_o will_v have_v much_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n four_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n it_o be_v join_v with_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o if_o you_o see_v any_o that_o talk_v never_o so_o much_o of_o the_o joy_n that_o they_o have_v it_o be_v but_o a_o frothy_a carnal_a joy_n except_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o they_o oh_o
