how_o the_o water_n of_o comfort_n overflow_a in_o silence_n run_v to_o all_o part_n of_o the_o garden_n that_o be_v to_o all_o the_o power_n sense_n and_o the_o very_a body_n itself_o water_v and_o delight_v all_o and_o they_o admire_v whence_o that_o so_o great_a content_n shall_v be_v which_o they_o do_v feel_v and_o in_o this_o sweet_a content_n and_o delightful_a admiration_n they_o do_v water_v remaine_n not_o on_o the_o top_n of_o hill_n or_o mountain_n but_o fall_v into_o the_o low_a place_n and_o valley_n so_o soul_n the_o good_a of_o a_o humble_a soul_n the_o water_n of_o comfort_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n can_v stay_v upon_o the_o hill_n or_o mountain_n of_o proud_a and_o presumptuous_a spirit_n but_o do_v fall_v into_o the_o valley_n of_o humility_n which_o quietness_n be_v not_o only_o during_o the_o time_n of_o that_o prayer_n senseless_a of_o any_o sickness_n but_o after_o prayer_n be_v void_a of_o all_o pain_n and_o in_o good_a health_n and_o many_o body_n and_o soul_n for_o beside_o what_o be_v say_v above_o it_o dilate_v the_o heart_n and_o make_v the_o soul_n more_o capable_a of_o divine_a favour_n and_o free_a from_o servile_a fear_n worldly_a affection_n and_o proper_a interest_n she_o now_o do_v take_v delight_n in_o do_v of_o pennance_n she_o regard_v not_o commodity_n or_o health_n so_o she_o may_v but_o please_v and_o serve_v god_n in_o any_o thing_n her_o faith_n be_v more_o liuly_a her_o desire_n to_o suffer_v persecution_n and_o wrong_n for_o love_n of_o he_o increase_v she_o do_v more_o fear_n to_o offend_v god_n than_o all_o the_o torment_n and_o devil_n of_o hell_n by_o reason_n she_o do_v now_o love_v he_o who_o she_o do_v then_o perceive_v to_o be_v true_o love_n and_o praise_v worthy_a by_o all_o reason_n they_o seem_v to_o they_o unpossible_a and_o that_o what_o be_v say_v of_o these_o rare_a matter_n be_v but_o a_o flourish_v of_o fair_a and_o sweet_a word_n and_o no_o real_a truth_n but_o my_o god_n thou_o do_v well_o know_v that_o they_o be_v real_a deed_n and_o therefore_o the_o humble_a soul_n that_o go_v on_o in_o thy_o service_n by_o this_o way_n of_o prayer_n thou_o do_v often_o make_v wonderful_a to_o the_o world_n in_o their_o life_n and_o work_n which_o other_o do_v not_o take_v to_o heart_n nor_o consider_v a_o right_n therefore_o i_o beseech_v thy_o divine_a majesty_n satisfaction_n which_o she_o do_v feel_v therein_o so_o that_o she_o do_v think_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o to_o be_v desire_v in_o this_o life_n but_o whereas_o the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v infinite_a and_o his_o work_n without_o limit_n we_o must_v conceive_v always_o great_a matter_n of_o his_o divine_a majesty_n and_o that_o as_o we_o dispose_v ourselves_o with_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n increase_v daily_o in_o humility_n and_o love_n he_o will_v impart_v his_o blessing_n and_o communicate_v his_o favour_n more_o and_o more_o unto_o us._n 2._o yet_o true_a it_o be_v that_o delightful_a to_o the_o soul_n not_o use_v to_o the_o like_a that_o she_o do_v esteem_v it_o very_o much_o and_o think_v that_o nothing_o more_o or_o great_a can_v be_v have_v or_o desire_v in_o this_o life_n but_o the_o way_n and_o invention_n of_o god_n
be_v favour_v without_o any_o merit_n on_o her_o part_n and_o that_o it_o be_v the_o mere_a goodness_n and_o mercy_n of_o his_o divine_a majesty_n that_o will_v have_v it_o to_o be_v so_o that_o she_o may_v know_v how_o much_o she_o be_v oblige_v and_o return_v a_o sincere_a affection_n answerable_a to_o his_o intention_n and_o not_o frustrate_v he_o of_o his_o expectation_n for_o certain_o this_o will_v encourage_v she_o to_o go_v forward_o daily_o in_o god_n service_n and_o to_o undertake_v great_a matter_n for_o his_o love_n honour_n and_o glory_n and_o believe_v it_o that_o a_o soul_n true_o humble_a can_v have_v a_o great_a confusion_n then_o to_o see_v herself_o favour_v and_o honour_v without_o any_o desert_n or_o merit_n and_o well_o know_v she_o own_o demerit_n which_o cause_v she_o to_o be_v more_o humble_a and_o thankful_a and_o desirous_a to_o please_v he_o more_o than_o former_o for_o this_o truth_n be_v imprint_v in_o she_o so_o feel_o that_o she_o can_v but_o see_v and_o confess_v it_o so_o that_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o that_o majesty_n which_o she_o know_v to_o be_v so_o great_a and_o powerful_a she_o will_v even_o annihilat_fw-la herself_o if_o that_o she_o can_v for_o she_o be_v not_o ignorant_a of_o her_o own_o nothing_o and_o unworthynesse_n 8._o but_o some_o soul_n do_v think_v their_o time_n lose_v in_o prayer_n and_o without_o profit_n when_o they_o do_v not_o discourse_v but_o be_v in_o that_o solitude_n silence_n and_o quietness_n not_o know_v what_o they_o do_v or_o aught_o to_o do_v in_o that_o case_n but_o they_o be_v mistake_v it_o be_v not_o so_o as_o they_o themselves_o both_o then_o and_o after_o do_v perceive_v by_o the_o effect_n which_o they_o find_v in_o themselves_o for_o first_o they_o find_v a_o alteration_n and_o sweet_a content_n in_o themselves_o they_o perceive_v a_o great_a satisfaction_n in_o all_o their_o power_n with_o so_o great_a suanity_n that_o it_o do_v redound_v to_o the_o body_n and_o sense_n in_o so_o much_o that_o at_o that_o time_n it_o will_v grieve_v they_o to_o be_v molest_v call_v upon_o or_o speak_v to_o nay_o they_o will_v not_o move_v nor_o stir_v nor_o breath_n lest_o to_o hinder_v their_o sweet_a repose_n and_o joyful_a rest_n in_o god_n and_o after_o prayer_n there_o remain_v such_o a_o memory_n and_o impression_n of_o his_o presence_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o she_o can_v in_o a_o very_a long_a time_n forget_v he_o and_o this_o quietness_n be_v so_o please_a with_o so_o great_a humility_n and_o feeling_n that_o if_o they_o be_v call_v to_o dinner_n or_o supper_n their_o grief_n be_v not_o little_a and_o i_o have_v see_v the_o tear_n run_v down_o the_o cheek_n of_o some_o as_o they_o do_v eat_v lament_v that_o they_o be_v force_v to_o leave_v that_o celestial_a banquet_n with_o their_o sovereign_a lord_n and_o only_o good_a to_o feed_v and_o feast_n a_o corruptible_a body_n their_o great_a enemy_n and_o cause_n of_o their_o most_o hurt_v and_o evil_a 9_o but_o let_v they_o not_o be_v trouble_v that_o they_o do_v not_o discourse_v nor_o know_v what_o they_o do_v and_o only_o rest_v in_o that_o sweet_a content_n with_o god_n for_o he_o teach_v they_o in_o a_o instant_n as_o be_v say_v more_o than_o what_o with_o the_o discourse_n of_o all_o their_o life_n they_o whould_v be_v able_a to_o reach_v unto_o therefore_o our_o holy_a mother_n do_v advise_v to_o stay_v in_o that_o silent_a quietness_n without_o noise_n of_o inward_a word_n enjoy_v that_o sweet_a content_n attend_v to_o nothing_o else_o for_o now_o she_o be_v in_o possession_n of_o what_o she_o seek_v for_o so_o that_o all_o her_o discourse_n be_v now_o in_o vain_a and_o to_o no_o other_o purpose_n then_o to_o trouble_v she_o in_o her_o joy_n and_o rest_n yet_o if_o her_o quietness_n and_o fervour_n be_v decline_v or_o decay_a it_o will_v do_v well_o to_o make_v some_o amorous_a act_n which_o may_v blow_v the_o coal_n and_o keep_v in_o the_o fire_n of_o divine_a love_n lest_o it_o shall_v decay_v and_o perish_v but_o this_o act_n must_v be_v make_v slow_o and_o attentive_o with_o great_a sweetness_n for_o if_o you_o use_v any_o force_n to_o increasse_n the_o fervor_n of_o your_o spirit_n it_o be_v no_o other_o then_o to_o cast_v water_n to_o smother_v and_o extinguish_v that_o little_a fire_n of_o devotion_n which_o be_v as_o yet_o burn_v for_o this_o be_v a_o supernatural_a gift_n and_o his_o work_n you_o must_v with_o humility_n give_v his_o divine_a majesty_n way_n to_o do_v in_o you_o and_o with_o you_o what_o he_o think_v sit_v and_o it_o be_v his_o work_n to_o increase_v it_o or_o diminish_v it_o for_o it_o be_v beyond_o our_o reach_n and_o therefore_o in_o vain_a we_o labour_v to_o attempt_v that_o which_o surpass_v our_o ability_n and_o exceed_v our_o force_n and_o if_o the_o understanding_n shall_v seem_v to_o bring_v reason_n to_o move_v the_o soul_n to_o more_o sorrow_n or_o gratitude_n let_v not_o the_o soul_n permit_v it_o nor_o regard_v it_o but_o keep_v the_o understanding_n as_o quiet_a as_o she_o can_v without_o trouble_v herself_o and_o if_o she_o can_v so_o do_v let_v she_o keep_v herself_o former_o she_o must_v not_o be_v desirous_a of_o gust_n and_o consolation_n but_o content_v herself_o with_o all_o indifferency_n in_o what_o shall_v be_v do_v by_o his_o divine_a majesty_n and_o be_v as_o humility_n gust_n and_o consolation_n must_v not_o be_v desire_v in_o prayer_n nor_o affect_v for_o it_o show_v little_a humility_n ready_a to_o help_v our_o saviour_n to_o carry_v his_o cross_n that_o be_v to_o suffer_v ariditye_n temptation_n and_o contradiction_n as_o to_o be_v feast_v at_o his_o table_n with_o delight_n and_o consolation_n for_o true_o the_o more_o we_o desire_v and_o seek_v after_o these_o gust_n and_o comfort_n the_o less_o we_o shall_v have_v of_o they_o and_o the_o less_o mortify_v and_o perfect_a we_o shall_v be_v for_o it_o be_v a_o great_a want_n of_o humility_n as_o i_o say_v elsewhere_o and_o for_o that_o presumption_n and_o want_v of_o humility_n the_o soul_n be_v deprive_v of_o what_o comfort_n she_o have_v and_o often_o do_v remain_v in_o great_a aridity_n therefore_o we_o must_v always_o humble_v ourselves_o and_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o unworthy_a of_o any_o favour_n from_o his_o divine_a majesty_n who_o we_o offend_v and_o with_o plain_a simplicity_n offer_v our_o desire_n and_o some_o resolution_n or_o purpose_n to_o do_v somewhat_o though_o never_o so_o little_a to_o content_v and_o please_v he_o with_o which_o he_o be_v to_o pray_v and_o commend_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o holy_a church_n the_o soul_n of_o purgatory_n the_o conversion_n of_o sinner_n our_o parent_n friend_n and_o benefactor_n and_o other_o necessity_n to_o his_o divine_a majesty_n not_o by_o noise_n of_o word_n but_o by_o a_o affection_n and_o feel_a desire_n that_o his_o majesty_n will_v be_v please_v to_o grant_v what_o be_v desire_v better_a and_o principal_a object_n as_o if_o one_o look_v with_o content_a on_o a_o sweet_a picture_n shall_v hear_v a_o noise_n behind_o he_o and_o shall_v turn_v about_o to_o see_v where_o and_o that_o bring_v a_o majesty_n with_o it_o which_o with_o one_o look_n on_o it_o procure_v in_o the_o soul_n most_o profound_a humility_n and_o a_o admirable_a reverential_a respect_n towards_o his_o divine_a majesty_n out_o of_o which_o aspect_n and_o respect_n there_o follow_v a_o sweet_a content_n and_o many_o delightful_a tear_n so_o that_o when_o the_o soul_n please_v she_o may_v look_v in_o and_o present_o find_v with_o who_o to_o converse_v without_o any_o labour_n and_o sufficient_a matter_n to_o keep_v she_o employ_v and_o this_o be_v the_o first_o step_n or_o degree_n 10._o the_o second_o step_n wherein_o he_o lead_v she_o forward_o be_v that_o recollection_n of_o which_o i_o speak_v last_o for_o the_o joy_n and_o content_v which_o proceed_v from_o that_o continual_a aspect_n instant_o recollect_v all_o the_o power_n though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o much_o distract_v before_o and_o give_v they_o so_o serious_a employment_n that_o they_o easy_o forget_v all_o outward_a object_n attend_v only_o to_o what_o be_v there_o which_o bring_v the_o soul_n to_o have_v great_a freedom_n have_v nothing_o to_o divert_v her_o intention_n nor_o attention_n out_o of_o that_o recollection_n and_o serious_a attention_n the_o light_n and_o affection_n do_v increase_v at_o which_o the_o power_n be_v in_o admiration_n and_o silence_n and_o this_o be_v the_o three_o degree_n expect_v to_o see_v what_o will_v be_v the_o conclusion_n for_o here_o the_o soul_n seem_v true_o to_o have_v find_v who_o she_o love_v 4._o cant._n 3._o v._n 4._o and_o seek_v for_o and_o now_o do_v hold_v himfast_n and_o will_v not_o let_v he_o go_v as_o be_v say_v in_o the_o canticle_n they_o be_v here_o present_a to_o gether_o very_o evident_o and_o feel_o there_o be_v no_o noise_n of_o word_n inward_o but_o by_o affection_n and_o love_v they_o be_v unite_v forcible_o rest_v sweet_o in_o the_o bed_n of_o delight_n and_o the_o very_a power_n have_v so_o great_a content_n and_o satisfaction_n that_o they_o will_v not_o have_v the_o very_a body_n to_o move_v or_o breath_n lest_o as_o our_o holy_a mother_n say_v 15._o in_o her_o life_n chap._n 15._o so_o great_a a_o good_a shall_v be_v lose_v or_o escape_v out_o of_o her_o hand_n as_o if_o by_o that_o mean_v she_o can_v keep_v it_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n depend_v only_o of_o his_o divine_a will_n and_o pleasure_n who_o give_v it_o when_o to_o who_o and_o for_o as_o long_a time_n as_o he_o think_v fit_v and_o it_o can_v be_v no_o long_o here_o the_o soul_n true_o feel_v how_o great_a the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v and_o how_o sweet_a he_o be_v to_o those_o that_o love_v he_o 11._o hence_o his_o divine_a majesty_n lead_v she_o forward_o into_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o inward_a solitude_n that_o be_v to_o a_o high_a impulse_n in_o the_o depth_n or_o most_o inward_a of_o the_o soul_n so_o vehement_a sudden_a and_o swift_a that_o she_o can_v resist_v it_o more_o than_o a_o child_n to_o a_o giant_n but_o away_o she_o be_v take_v and_o elevate_v sometime_o above_o all_o that_o be_v create_v where_o she_o have_v the_o vision_n and_o revelation_n former_o mention_v and_o with_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o glory_n and_o majesty_n which_o she_o behold_v in_o god_n she_o be_v much_o terrify_v and_o do_v conceive_v a_o reverential_a fear_n which_o cause_v the_o very_a hair_n of_o her_o head_n to_o stand_v and_o then_o she_o do_v grieve_v that_o she_o or_o any_o other_o ever_o offend_v a_o lord_n of_o so_o high_a and_o incomprehensible_a a_o dignity_n power_n and_o majesty_n and_o some_o time_n it_o some_o form_n or_o shape_n to_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o for_o example_n when_o you_o frame_v in_o your_o mind_n the_o image_n of_o your_o friend_n who_o be_v absent_a you_o do_v see_v he_o inward_o in_o a_o manner_n as_o if_o he_o be_v personal_o present_a you_o see_v his_o gesture_n and_o behaviour_n and_o may_v be_v move_v out_o of_o that_o sight_n to_o love_v he_o or_o grieve_v for_o call_v therefore_o imaginary_a 2._o but_o the_o intellectual_a be_v without_o any_o image_n shape_n or_o form_n yet_o of_o more_o certainty_n than_o the_o other_o for_o spirit_n have_v no_o shape_n nor_o form_n but_o be_v present_a they_o see_v and_o understand_v in_o a_o more_o perfect_a manner_n then_o in_o the_o other_o way_n what_o each_o other_o do_v intend_v as_o the_o angel_n do_v see_v and_o clear_o understand_v one_o a_o other_o in_o heaven_n and_o in_o these_o three_o way_n there_o be_v speech_n vision_n and_o revelation_n the_o first_o be_v most_o subject_a to_o deceit_n the_o second_o not_o so_o much_o by_o far_o for_o the_o devil_n can_v turn_v himself_o into_o the_o shape_n of_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n to_o deceive_v but_o the_o last_o be_v least_o of_o all_o subject_n they_o be_v from_o god_n they_o come_v with_o clearness_n that_o of_o the_o devil_n do_v bring_v darkness_n also_o when_o they_o be_v from_o the_o devil_n you_o may_v resist_v and_o reject_v they_o and_o divert_v your_o understanding_n and_o not_o attend_v unto_o they_o when_o you_o please_v but_o if_o they_o be_v from_o god_n do_v what_o you_o may_v and_o divert_v yourself_o never_o so_o much_o you_o can_v hinder_v it_o but_o must_v even_o against_o your_o will_n hear_v and_o see_v what_o be_v say_v or_o do_v so_o clear_o and_o distinct_o that_o you_o shall_v not_o forget_v one_o syllable_n observe_v and_o perceive_v the_o understanding_n work_v and_o frame_v what_o it_o will_v and_o produce_v the_o word_n though_o never_o so_o subtle_o also_o they_o be_v dumb_a word_n without_o any_o light_n or_o good_a effect_n in_o the_o soul_n also_o you_o may_v omit_v to_o see_v hear_v or_o speak_v when_o you_o please_v but_o when_o they_o be_v from_o god_n they_o come_v with_o light_n and_o clearness_n as_o be_v say_v and_o you_o can_v divert_v yourself_o but_o must_v attend_v and_o the_o understanding_n be_v set_v at_o rest_n and_o in_o so_o great_a quietness_n that_o of_o necessity_n you_o must_v give_v ear_n to_o what_o be_v say_v and_o see_v what_o be_v present_v and_o they_o be_v not_o dumb_a word_n but_o his_o word_n be_v word_n and_o work_v together_o and_o some_o time_n though_o they_o be_v not_o word_n of_o devotion_n but_o of_o instruction_n admonition_n or_o reprehension_n in_o a_o instant_n they_o do_v dispose_v and_o recollect_v the_o soul_n and_o do_v move_v
