if_o the_o profession_n which_o they_o make_v of_o the_o belief_n of_o these_o great_a and_o momentous_a truth_n be_v any_o thing_n more_o than_o formal_a and_o superficial_a it_o be_v true_a indeed_o there_o be_v but_o few_o people_n in_o the_o world_n that_o pretend_v utter_o to_o disbelieve_v or_o deny_v the_o be_v of_o a_o god_n and_o providence_n and_o there_o be_v very_o good_a reason_n for_o it_o because_o when_o this_o point_n be_v press_v home_o upon_o they_o they_o can_v with_o any_o shadow_n of_o reason_n maintain_v their_o ground_n in_o the_o defence_n of_o such_o principle_n but_o it_o be_v likewise_o certain_a that_o a_o great_a many_o man_n entertain_v such_o false_a and_o unbecoming_a notion_n and_o opinion_n concern_v the_o nature_n and_o attribute_n of_o god_n as_o quite_o destroy_v all_o the_o motive_n either_o to_o religion_n or_o morality_n and_o from_o these_o opinion_n they_o encourage_v themselves_o to_o go_v on_o in_o their_o sin_n with_o security_n but_o second_o not_o only_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o thing_n persuade_v we_o that_o a_o resolve_a course_n of_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n proceed_v from_o or_o at_o least_o be_v accompany_v with_o infidelity_n or_o undue_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o his_o attribute_n but_o experience_v likewise_o teach_v we_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o for_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o several_a way_n as_o well_o he_o any_o sense_n of_o religion_n or_o piety_n if_o you_o come_v to_o examine_v he_o what_o a_o strange_a account_n will_v he_o give_v of_o matter_n relate_v to_o a_o future_a life_n if_o his_o own_o after_o god_n nor_o call_v upon_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o in_o the_o 9th_o psalm_n the_o wicked_a and_o those_o that_o forget_v god_n be_v join_v together_o and_o in_o the_o 10_o psalm_n v._n 4._o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o wicked_a through_o the_o pride_n of_o his_o countenance_n will_v not_o seek_v after_o god_n god_n be_v not_o in_o all_o his_o thought_n and_o again_o v._n 11._o he_o have_v say_v in_o his_o heart_n god_n have_v forget_v he_o hide_v his_o face_n and_o he_o will_v never_o see_v and_o many_o more_o expression_n there_o be_v in_o the_o book_n of_o psalm_n to_o this_o purpose_n in_o like_a manner_n st._n paul_n show_v at_o large_a in_o the_o first_o chapter_n of_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n concern_v the_o gentile_a world_n that_o the_o reason_n of_o that_o great_a corruption_n of_o manner_n among_o they_o be_v their_o false_a and_o corrupt_a notion_n of_o god_n and_o this_o not_o only_o by_o way_n of_o natural_a consequence_n but_o by_o the_o just_a judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o such_o perverse_a and_o deprave_a opinion_n and_o that_o because_o they_o do_v not_o like_a to_o retain_v god_n in_o their_o knowledge_n therefore_o god_n give_v they_o over_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n to_o do_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o convenient_a and_o ephes_n 4.18_o he_o say_v that_o the_o gentile_n be_v alienate_v from_o the_o life_n of_o god_n through_o the_o ignorance_n that_o be_v in_o they_o through_o the_o blindness_n of_o their_o heart_n have_v give_v themselves_o over_o unto_o lasciviousness_n to_o work_v all_o uncleanness_n with_o greediness_n from_o all_o which_o it_o plain_o appear_v that_o the_o corruption_n of_o man_n manner_n spring_v from_o the_o want_n of_o a_o true_a and_o sincere_a belief_n of_o the_o be_v and_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o that_o man_n may_v be_v true_o account_v so_o far_o atheist_n in_o their_o heart_n as_o they_o be_v resolute_o profligate_v and_o debauch_v in_o their_o practice_n proceed_v we_o therefore_o to_o consider_v ii_o in_o the_o second_o place_n whence_o this_o infidelity_n or_o doubt_v arise_v which_o thus_o harden_v man_n in_o sin_n and_o the_o text_n tell_v we_o it_o be_v because_o sentence_n against_o a_o evil_a work_n be_v not_o execute_v speedy_o i._n e._n man_n take_v occasion_n to_o doubt_n about_o providence_n and_o so_o full_o to_o set_v their_o heart_n to_o do_v evil_a from_o the_o seem_a slowness_n of_o divine_a justice_n in_o dispense_n reward_n and_o punishment_n or_o rather_o from_o their_o overhasty_a judge_v about_o these_o matter_n i_o mention_v reward_n as_o well_o as_o punishment_n though_o the_o text_n speak_v express_o of_o the_o latter_a only_o because_o sentence_v against_o a_o evil_a work_n be_v not_o execute_v speedy_o and_o perhaps_o the_o reason_n why_o it_o be_v express_v more_o particular_o on_o that_o side_n may_v be_v this_o because_o there_o be_v so_o much_o ill_a nature_n general_o in_o the_o world_n that_o man_n be_v much_o more_o offend_v to_o see_v any_o man_n escape_v that_o deserve_v punishment_n than_o they_o be_v concern_v for_o a_o good_a man_n that_o miss_v of_o his_o due_a reward_n and_o more_o apt_a to_o observe_v the_o evil_a action_n of_o man_n than_o the_o good_a just_a as_o in_o the_o disposal_n of_o temporal_a greatness_n it_o usual_o raise_v a_o great_a indignation_n to_o see_v a_o unworthy_a and_o vile_a person_n prefer_v than_o to_o see_v a_o deserve_a man_n neglect_v or_o at_o least_o much_o more_o than_o it_o raise_v our_o joy_n and_o gratitude_n to_o see_v a_o worthy_a person_n raise_v to_o a_o deserve_a dignity_n and_o beside_o base_a and_o unworthy_a mind_n such_o as_o be_v most_o wont_a to_o tax_n the_o providence_n of_o god_n be_v apt_a to_o be_v general_o more_o move_v by_o principle_n of_o fear_n than_o by_o hope_n or_o love_n and_o therefore_o when_o punishment_n do_v not_o present_o overtake_v their_o fault_n be_v soon_o persuade_v to_o disbelieve_v that_o providence_n which_o they_o think_v shall_v present_o punish_v if_o he_o have_v any_o regard_n to_o what_o they_o do_v but_o notwithstanding_o that_o the_o slowness_n of_o divine_a punishment_n only_o be_v mention_v in_o the_o text_n and_o perhaps_o for_o the_o reason_n now_o assign_v yet_o the_o slowness_n of_o reward_n also_o may_v be_v suppose_v to_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o reason_n why_o man_n doubt_v of_o or_o disbelieve_v a_o providence_n now_o that_o this_o long-suffering_a of_o god_n be_v general_o the_o occasion_n of_o most_o man_n disbelief_n or_o perverse_a opinion_n of_o god_n and_o his_o attribute_n and_o consequent_o of_o their_o harden_v themselves_o in_o wickedness_n appear_v not_o only_o from_o this_o expression_n of_o
