first_o resemblance_n may_v we_o not_o observe_v in_o the_o natural_a birth_n that_o in_o the_o cold_a season_n the_o inward_a heat_n be_v more_o powerful_a in_o the_o least_o burden_n of_o flesh_n the_o spirit_n be_v more_o active_a and_o forcible_a nay_o that_o in_o the_o great_a sounding_n and_o faint_n cause_v by_o the_o suffocate_a of_o the_o spirit_n or_o some_o sudden_a and_o violent_a outward_a accident_n yet_o than_o the_o blood_n and_o spirit_n retire_v to_o the_o most_o noble_a and_o principal_a part_n the_o heart_n not_o only_o to_o preserve_v themselves_o but_o there_o with_o all_o to_o fortify_v it_o that_o it_o may_v withstand_v and_o overcome_v the_o extremity_n and_o so_o again_o be_v enlarge_v to_o the_o better_a quicken_a of_o the_o body_n and_o sure_o so_o it_o fall_v out_o in_o our_o spiritual_a birth_n that_o not_o only_o outward_a affliction_n prove_v mean_n of_o our_o spiritual_a courage_n but_o usual_o in_o the_o less_o supply_n of_o nature_n there_o appear_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n yea_o when_o by_o reason_n of_o divine_a desertion_n at_o least_o in_o part_n the_o spirit_n seem_v to_o fail_v we_o outward_o yet_o then_o do_v it_o more_o inward_o sustain_v we_o in_o the_o most_o necessary_a and_o main_a work_n send_v we_o to_o the_o trial_n and_o search_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o so_o confirm_v we_o in_o the_o evidence_n thereof_o yea_o hereby_o increase_n the_o zeal_n thereof_o against_o all_o sin_n by_o experience_n of_o particular_a fayling_n and_o make_v we_o more_o wise_a and_o eager_a to_o prevent_v or_o expel_v the_o same_o whereby_o we_o be_v teach_v to_o judge_v wise_o of_o ourselves_o and_o other_o in_o such_o accident_n that_o seem_v so_o contrary_a to_o flesh_n and_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o issue_v thereof_o comfort_v ourselves_o that_o as_o this_o more_o advance_v the_o free_a mercy_n power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o our_o god_n so_o it_o shall_v also_o much_o further_o and_o encourage_v thereof_o by_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o assurance_n of_o our_o salvation_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o spirit_n from_o the_o same_o yet_o lest_o we_o shall_v imagine_v the_o spirit_n tie_v only_o to_o this_o effect_n or_o that_o we_o deserve_v the_o same_o out_o of_o the_o worth_n of_o our_o well-doing_n and_o so_o encroach_v upon_o the_o worthiness_n of_o our_o head_n therefore_o we_o shall_v but_o hear_v not_o see_v full_o for_o that_o remain_v for_o another_o life_n some_o notice_n we_o shall_v have_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o work_v though_o we_o can_v full_o discern_v the_o mystery_n thereof_o and_o we_o shall_v but_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o some_o such_o feel_n thereof_o we_o shall_v have_v as_o may_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v not_o in_o vain_a though_o we_o may_v want_v of_o such_o evidence_n which_o may_v evince_v the_o perfection_n of_o grace_n as_o be_v most_o fit_a for_o this_o state_n of_o grow_v our_o faith_n shall_v be_v mingle_v with_o some_o doubt_v our_o grace_n with_o some_o mixture_n of_o corruption_n that_o as_o we_o may_v discern_v the_o truth_n thereof_o so_o we_o may_v also_o discern_v the_o imperfection_n of_o the_o same_o that_o so_o we_o may_v daily_o hasten_v to_o perfection_n by_o daily_o deny_v of_o ourselves_o and_o labour_v to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n not_o have_v our_o own_o righteousness_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o we_o have_v not_o the_o perfect_a sight_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o grow_v in_o grace_n neither_o enjoy_v sensible_a comfort_n in_o the_o same_o at_o all_o time_n alike_o yet_o be_v this_o so_o far_o from_o challenge_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o we_o as_o that_o rather_o it_o do_v evidence_n undoubted_o the_o power_n thereof_o see_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o combat_n between_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n there_o must_v necessary_o fall_v out_o such_o difference_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o also_o of_o our_o apprehension_n thereof_o whereas_o if_o it_o be_v always_o in_o one_o key_n and_o temper_n it_o be_v a_o plain_a argument_n that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o combat_n and_o so_o no_o true_a conversion_n only_o here_o let_v it_o suffice_v we_o that_o our_o god_n know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o will_v work_v as_o it_o please_v he_o that_o his_o grace_n may_v still_o be_v free_a and_o if_o ever_o we_o have_v any_o true_a feel_n of_o the_o work_n it_o be_v a_o evidence_n that_o we_o shall_v have_v it_o again_o or_o else_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v better_o for_o we_o know_v that_o here_o we_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sight_n 2._o cor._n 5.7_o and_o that_o the_o power_n of_o god_n must_v be_v perfect_v in_o our_o weakness_n 2._o cor._n 12.8_o remember_v now_o what_o be_v add_v in_o the_o do_v live_v by_o faith_n both_o in_o discern_v whereunto_o we_o be_v come_v and_o whither_o we_o may_v go_v in_o general_a yet_o see_v we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n 13.9_o 1._o cor._n 13.9_o and_o apprehension_n yea_o contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o ordinary_a course_n as_o the_o ship_n many_o time_n sail_n by_o side_n and_o contrary_a wind_n towards_o the_o port_n and_o be_v fain_o sometime_o to_o forgo_v her_o burden_n yea_o her_o anchor_n to_o that_o so_o she_o may_v escape_v the_o storm_n and_o ride_v safe_o to_o the_o haven_n so_o be_v we_o lead_v along_o in_o this_o work_n of_o grace_n to_o this_o end_n consider_v we_o further_o that_o our_o new_a birth_n and_o growth_n in_o grace_n be_v compare_v to_o a_o combat_n express_v therein_o as_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o growth_n which_o be_v by_o a_o continual_a bicker_n and_o contention_n between_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o flesh_n so_o thereby_o also_o give_v we_o some_o direction_n how_o to_o discern_v the_o manner_n thereof_o even_o by_o a_o continual_a fight_n and_o wrestle_v within_o we_o whence_o arise_v these_o conclusion_n that_o as_o the_o spirit_n prevail_v two_o way_n either_o by_o strengthen_v we_o to_o overcome_v the_o present_a tentation_n or_o else_o by_o leave_v we_o to_o the_o particular_a tentation_n for_o the_o present_a thereby_o either_o to_o arm_v we_o better_o against_o the_o same_o hereafter_o that_o so_o we_o may_v after_o a_o foil_n attain_v a_o more_o glorious_a victory_n or_o though_o it_o leave_v we_o to_o be_v foil_v by_o the_o particular_a tentation_n yet_o it_o do_v by_o growth_n be_v rather_o by_o the_o issue_n and_o success_n of_o the_o combat_n then_o by_o the_o present_a wrestle_a because_o for_o the_o present_a through_o violence_n of_o tentation_n and_o heat_n of_o affection_n strive_v there_o against_o our_o faith_n be_v now_o exercise_v be_v so_o intentive_a in_o the_o encounter_n that_o it_o have_v enough_o to_o do_v to_o keep_v it_o own_o therein_o that_o he_o may_v have_v the_o only_a glory_n of_o all_o his_o work_n and_o flesh_n may_v be_v confound_v in_o all_o confidence_n therein_o of_o which_o more_o particular_o in_o the_o case_n hereafter_o from_o whence_o arise_v these_o most_o comfortable_a rule_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o growth_n and_o proceed_n therein_o as_o first_o that_o see_v the_o spirit_n work_v free_o even_o from_o the_o beginning_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o work_n therefore_o we_o must_v discern_v the_o measure_n of_o our_o growth_n by_o the_o free_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n flesh_n may_v be_v abase_v and_o all_o carnal_a glory_n confound_v but_o of_o this_o before_o in_o the_o open_n of_o that_o resemblance_n a_o sixth_o rule_n hereto_o be_v that_o the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v see_v in_o our_o weakness_n and_o his_o glory_n perfect_v in_o our_o infirmity_n that_o be_v see_v our_o estate_n in_o grace_n be_v imperfect_a at_o the_o best_a by_o reason_n of_o inward_a corruption_n still_o accompany_v the_o same_o and_o also_o of_o outward_a tentation_n hinder_v thereof_o and_o all_o this_o that_o god_n only_o may_v have_v the_o glory_n of_o all_o his_o
not_o in_o themselves_o if_o otherwise_o they_o condemn_v themselves_o and_o justify_v god_n howsoever_o they_o speed_v they_o know_v it_o be_v best_o for_o they_o and_o therefore_o hit_v or_o miss_v they_o glorify_v god_n but_o with_o the_o wicked_a it_o be_v not_o so_o either_o they_o must_v speed_v well_o at_o all_o time_n or_o else_o god_n love_v they_o not_o and_o therefore_o if_o they_o speed_v not_o well_o from_o he_o they_o know_v another_o way_n to_o the_o wood_n rather_o than_o fail_v they_o will_v try_v what_o satan_n can_v do_v and_o if_o he_o fail_v then_o farewell_n all_o be_v apparent_a that_o the_o saint_n even_o in_o their_o great_a fail_a be_v not_o whole_o destitute_a of_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n to_o sustain_v they_o from_o utter_v sink_v therein_o but_o enjoy_v also_o some_o gracious_a measure_n thereof_o to_o their_o recovery_n thereout_o so_o more_o particular_o may_v we_o find_v that_o herein_o as_o there_o be_v always_o some_o true_a wrestle_v of_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n so_o be_v there_o not_o want_v many_o lively_a evidence_n herein_o which_o do_v plain_o argue_v a_o daily_a weaken_n of_o corruption_n and_o a_o continual_a increase_n of_o grace_n and_o so_o a_o hasten_v to_o the_o life_n of_o glory_n that_o corruption_n be_v daily_o more_o weaken_v be_v evident_a 1._o that_o by_o their_o daily_a fayling_n they_o attain_v to_o a_o more_o clear_a insight_n of_o the_o power_n of_o original_a contagion_n and_o so_o more_o unfeigned_o loathe_v the_o same_o yea_o more_fw-it earnest_o desire_v to_o be_v rid_v thereof_o prove_v more_o wary_a against_o the_o occasion_n of_o the_o same_o and_o more_o skilful_a to_o repel_v the_o tentation_n thereto_o and_o grow_v more_o tender_a and_o compassionate_a towards_o other_o yea_o by_o the_o experience_n of_o daily_a fayling_n those_o secret_a and_o dangerous_a evil_n of_o pride_n hypocrisy_n security_n be_v gracious_o discover_v and_o loathe_v and_o the_o deceitful_a heart_n daily_o put_v to_o it_o trial_n and_o cast_v upon_o the_o free_a goodness_n of_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o by_o he_o enable_v daily_o more_o and_o more_o to_o renounce_v itself_o and_o so_o still_o to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n not_o have_v it_o own_o righteousness_n that_o so_o in_o he_o it_o may_v be_v more_o than_o conqueror_n as_o prevayl_v through_o he_o so_o far_o forth_o that_o it_o so_o subdue_v such_o sin_n as_o direct_o oppose_v faith_n that_o it_o never_o after_o false_a into_o they_o again_o actual_o though_o it_o may_v often_o be_v move_v thereto_o to_o provoke_v more_o earnest_a watchfulness_n again_o &_o resistance_n thereof_o and_o for_o all_o other_o sin_n still_o it_o make_v conscience_n of_o the_o least_o &_o allow_v itself_o in_o none_o special_o labour_n against_o the_o reign_a sin_n either_o of_o it_o own_o corruption_n or_o the_o time_n above_o all_o keep_v it_o judgement_n sound_n according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o and_o so_o be_v grace_n also_o daily_o increase_v special_o such_o grace_n as_o be_v simple_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n and_o do_v most_o further_o perfection_n as_o faith_n without_o present_a feel_n cast_v we_o whole_o upon_o the_o power_n of_o god_n and_o prevent_v such_o rejoice_v in_o the_o flesh_n as_o may_v encroach_v on_o god_n glory_n and_o so_o humility_n in_o the_o daily_a denial_n of_o ourselves_o and_o yield_v to_o god_n correction_n so_o daily_a repentance_n above_o all_o sincerity_n and_o uprightness_n labour_v to_o approve_v our_o heart_n unto_o god_n in_o the_o dislike_n of_o what_o we_o do_v and_o desire_v of_o the_o contrary_a approve_v his_o righteous_a will_n though_o it_o be_v to_o our_o own_o confusion_n and_o condemn_v ourselves_o before_o he_o in_o what_o we_o may_v be_v approve_v of_o man_n because_o he_o know_v that_o in_o we_o which_o we_o find_v not_o in_o ourselves_o and_o require_v that_o of_o we_o which_o we_o be_v far_o short_a of_o thus_o do_v the_o saint_n thrive_v in_o grace_n even_o when_o they_o fail_v in_o sin_n and_o so_o find_v the_o truth_n of_o that_o gracious_a promise_n that_o all_o thing_n shall_v work_v together_o for_o the_o best_a unto_o they_o and_o thus_o of_o this_o first_o scruple_n concern_v the_o daily_a fayling_n of_o the_o saint_n how_o notwithstanding_o they_o grow_v in_o grace_n case_n 2._o how_o the_o saint_n may_v be_v say_v to_o grow_v in_o grace_n when_o by_o reason_n of_o sin_n they_o have_v so_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o in_o a_o manner_n quench_v the_o same_o as_o that_o to_o their_o seem_n they_o have_v lose_v all_o and_o so_o be_v utter_o fall_v away_o from_o grace_n the_o resolution_n hereof_o consist_v in_o these_o thing_n 1._o in_o a_o true_a confession_n that_o the_o dear_a saint_n of_o god_n have_v thus_o far_o fall_v and_o have_v hence_o thus_o conceit_v of_o themselves_o 2._o in_o a_o wise_a discovery_n of_o the_o ground_n and_o cause_n of_o these_o their_o gnawne_n yet_o still_o they_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o hasten_v on_o to_o perfection_n that_o the_o saint_n have_v thus_o far_o fall_v it_o be_v manifest_a by_o these_o example_n 1._o by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n who_o though_o a_o man_n after_o god_n own_o heart_n yet_o fall_v into_o most_o grievous_a and_o wilful_a rebellious_a multiply_v his_o transgression_n with_o such_o a_o high_a have_v hide_v the_o sin_n yet_o will_v thereby_o have_v increase_v it_o both_o in_o that_o hereby_o it_o be_v hide_v and_o so_o must_v needs_o harden_v more_o the_o heart_n of_o david_n as_o also_o in_o that_o hereby_o vriah_n must_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o sin_n in_o share_v in_o the_o now-adulterous_a bed_n and_o so_o frustrate_v the_o law_n of_o god_n for_o the_o punishment_n of_o the_o adulteress_n yea_o hereby_o also_o increase_a the_o sin_n of_o bathsheba_n by_o cover_v the_o shame_n thereof_o and_o so_o exclude_v repentance_n yea_o herein_o also_o exceed_o increase_n the_o sin_n that_o the_o conception_n of_o bathsheba_n may_v be_v destroy_v or_o hinder_v by_o this_o mixture_n of_o seed_n and_o so_o the_o murder_n of_o the_o infant_n may_v be_v thereby_o procure_v thus_o many_o way_n be_v david_n confound_v by_o this_o first_o policy_n and_o yet_o behold_v he_o harden_v his_o heart_n more_o and_o more_o and_o proceed_v in_o his_o rebellion_n against_o the_o false_a imputation_n by_o the_o reformation_n of_o his_o child_n and_o so_o make_v inexcusable_a so_o also_o do_v this_o tend_v to_o the_o exceed_a good_a of_o the_o elect_a themselves_o as_o that_o they_o be_v not_o only_o hereby_o assure_v of_o their_o interest_n in_o god_n favour_n in_o that_o they_o answer_v his_o special_a providence_n in_o their_o correction_n but_o also_o enable_v here_o to_o walk_v more_o cheerful_o in_o their_o call_n as_o have_v cast_v away_o that_o which_o press_v down_o and_o clog_v they_o before_o yea_o they_o be_v hereby_o better_o enable_v to_o reform_v and_o comfort_v other_o when_o themselves_o walk_v without_o just_a imputation_n and_o so_o gain_v hereby_o more_o assurance_n of_o their_o own_o stand_n by_o a_o more_o holy_a watch_v over_o themselves_o in_o regard_n of_o new_a surprisal_n the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v concern_v the_o other_o end_n for_o must_v it_o not_o much_o make_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n that_o his_o servant_n be_v advance_v the_o singular_a love_n of_o christ_n towards_o they_o that_o when_o they_o be_v dead_a in_o themselves_o yet_o they_o live_v in_o christ_n their_o head_n that_o when_o the_o operation_n
