mean_a time_n make_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n subservient_n unto_o that_o second_o let_v it_o be_v inquire_v god_n whether_o our_o provide_n for_o our_o own_o safety_n in_o this_o way_n of_o flight_n be_v not_o some_o diminution_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n whether_o we_o may_v not_o glorify_v god_n more_o by_o our_o stand_v then_o by_o our_o fly_n here_o press_v conscience_n to_o give_v senteâ—ce_n according_a to_o evidence_n and_o according_a thâ—reunto_o order_n we_o ourselves_o for_o our_o fly_a or_o stand_v do_v that_o which_o may_v conduce_v most_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n second_o good_a and_o second_o that_o which_o may_v conduce_v most_o to_o the_o good_a of_o other_o special_o the_o public_a good_a we_o be_v not_o bear_v neither_o shall_v we_o live_v mere_o for_o persecution_n now_o here_o sometime_o it_o so_o fall_v out_o that_o christian_n can_v fly_v without_o both_o public_a scandal_n and_o danger_n the_o case_n special_o of_o public_a person_n magistrate_n and_o minister_n their_o flight_n ofttimes_o endanger_v the_o community_n as_o the_o flight_n of_o the_o shepherd_n do_v the_o flock_n or_o as_o the_o flight_n of_o the_o mariner_n in_o paul_n voyage_n will_v have_v do_v the_o passenger_n touch_v who_o paul_n tell_v the_o centurion_n and_o soldier_n except_o these_o abide_v in_o the_o ship_n 27.31_o you_o can_v be_v save_v now_o in_o this_o case_n they_o be_v thus_o engage_v god_n bid_v they_o stand_v and_o therefore_o they_o may_v not_o flee_v upon_o this_o ground_n that_o worthy_a governor_n nehemiah_n take_v up_o that_o nay_o their_o flee_n may_v be_v a_o advantage_n to_o it_o thereby_o they_o may_v have_v the_o opportunity_n off_o do_v moregood_a to_o the_o church_n then_o otherwise_o they_o can_v do_v in_o this_o case_n god_n bid_v they_o flee_v and_o they_o have_v their_o master_n go_v before_o they_o in_o it_o our_o bless_a saviour_n as_o i_o tell_v you_o be_v in_o danger_n by_o his_o adversary_n he_o often_o withdraw_v himself_o this_o he_o do_v for_o the_o great_a advantage_n and_o benefit_n of_o his_o church_n that_o he_o may_v have_v opportunity_n for_o the_o finish_n of_o the_o work_n which_o his_o father_n have_v give_v he_o to_o do_v what_o himself_o therein_o do_v he_o order_v his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n to_o do_v the_o like_a when_o they_o persecute_v you_o in_o ox_n city_n flee_v church_n in_o their_o fly_n now_o god_n bid_v they_o flee_v if_o in_o their_o stay_n now_o god_n bid_v they_o stand_v this_o be_v the_o general_a rule_n which_o the_o word_n hold_v forth_o unto_o we_o god_n thereby_o make_v know_v his_o will_n unto_o we_o touch_v our_o fly_n or_o stand_v in_o time_n of_o persecution_n second_o providence_n for_o more_o particular_a and_o personal_a direction_n herein_o take_v this_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n along_o with_o we_o we_o must_v have_v recourse_n to_o the_o work_n of_o god_n i_o mean_v his_o providential_a work_n the_o passage_n of_o his_o two-â—old_v viz._n inward_a or_o outward_a his_o work_n within_o we_o and_o his_o work_n without_o we_o first_o his_o inward_a work_n his_o work_n upon_o the_o inwardman_n heart_n upon_o our_o heart_n and_o spirit_n in_o the_o order_n and_o temper_v of_o they_o this_o we_o find_v god_n do_v various_o even_o as_o the_o smith_n deal_v with_o his_o iron_n which_o sometime_o he_o harden_v sometime_o he_o softness_n harden_v thus_o deal_v god_n with_o the_o spirit_n of_o his_o own_o people_n sometime_o he_o harden_v they_o take_v it_o in_o a_o good_a sense_n fleel_v they_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o heroical_a resolution_n put_v into_o their_o heart_n a_o spirit_n of_o courage_n and_o fortitude_n so_o strengthen_v they_o with_o all_o might_n according_a to_o his_o glorious_a power_n unto_o all_o patience_n and_o long_a suffering_n with_o joyfulness_n 1.11_o as_o paul_n pray_v for_o his_o colossâ—ans_n as_o that_o they_o dare_v look_v whatever_o danger_n or_o enemy_n in_o the_o face_n thus_o be_v it_o with_o elias_n when_o he_o take_v up_o that_o resolution_n that_o whatever_o come_v he_o will_v look_v his_o arch-enemy_n ahab_n in_o the_o face_n notwithstanding_o that_o ahab_n gospel_n to_o get_v our_o understanding_n enlighten_v and_o our_o judgement_n strong_o convince_v touch_v the_o princiâ—les_n of_o christian_a religion_n which_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o lay_n of_o the_o foundation_n with_o all_o labour_v to_o get_v a_o love_n of_o the_o truth_n â—â—1_n you_o know_v who_o tell_v it_o you_o that_o love_n be_v strong_a as_o death_n 8.6_o without_o this_o foundation_n the_o soul_n will_v never_o stand_v sure_a a_o christian_n will_v never_o stand_v still_o build_v second_o the_o foundation_n be_v good_a now_o in_o the_o second_o place_n the_o second_o requisite_a in_o a_o house_n be_v it_o must_v be_v strong_o build_v viz._n of_o good_a material_n well_o wrought_v good_a stone_n or_o brick_n well_o couch_v and_o cement_v with_o well_o temper_a mortar_n or_o strong_a timber_n sound_a and_o substantial_a principal_n good_a stud_n and_o joice_v and_o spar_v etc._n etc._n all_o well_o joint_v and_o bind_v together_o and_o even_o thus_o must_v it_o be_v with_o the_o soul_n that_o will_v stand_v it_o cut_v all_o weather_n grace_n and_o stand_v still_o in_o time_n of_o persecution_n it_o must_v be_v thus_o build_v and_o thus_o lay_v in_o with_o all_o requisite_a variety_n of_o sound_n and_o substantial_a grace_n a_o truth_n which_o the_o apostle_n illustrate_v by_o another_o metaphor_n very_o opposite_a and_o fit_a to_o our_o present_a purpose_n ephesi_fw-la 6._o 6.11_o where_o call_v upon_o christian_n to_o stand_v and_o stand_v fast_o against_o their_o spiritual_a enemy_n he_o show_v they_o what_o they_o shall_v do_v weather_n and_o feel_v little_a of_o they_o the_o application_n be_v obvious_a soul_n the_o soul_n that_o will_v stand_v firm_a and_o sure_a in_o time_n of_o persecution_n must_v be_v lay_v low_a it_o must_v be_v bring_v to_o learn_v that_o great_a lesson_n of_o self-denial_n itself_o it_o be_v the_o first_o lesson_n you_o know_v that_o our_o bless_a saviour_n set_v his_o scholar_n his_o disciple_n to_o learn_v 16.24_o if_o any_o man_n will_v come_v after_o i_o let_v he_o deny_v himself_o and_o take_v up_o his_o cross_n and_o follow_v i_o till_o a_o man_n have_v learn_v this_o lesson_n he_o will_v never_o take_v up_o his_o cross_n and_o follow_v christ_n to_o mount_n calvary_n and_o therefore_o every_o of_o we_o begin_v here_o will_v we_o approve_v ourselves_o champion_n for_o christ_n never_o rest_v until_o we_o have_v bring_v our_o heart_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o a_o self-denying_a frame_n that_o we_o can_v deny_v ourselves_o in_o whatever_o it_o be_v that_o flesh_n and_o all_o our_o heart_n and_o spirit_n be_v but_o bring_v to_o such_o a_o self_n deny_v frame_n which_o all_o lay_v low_a in_o the_o apprehension_n and_o acknowledgement_n of_o our_o own_o weakness_n insufficiency_n weakness_n inability_n to_o stand_v as_o of_o ourselves_o such_o we_o be_v labour_v we_o to_o be_v sensible_a of_o it_o go_v out_o of_o ourselves_o not_o stand_v upon_o our_o own_o bottom_n which_o if_o we_o do_v see_v the_o issue_n of_o it_o in_o peter_n who_o then_o fall_v most_o foul_o when_o he_o be_v most_o confident_a of_o his_o own_o stand_n when_o he_o be_v strong_a then_o be_v he_o weak_a whereas_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n paul_n tell_v we_o 12.10_o that_o when_o he_o be_v weak_a than_o he_o be_v strong_a when_o weak_a in_o himself_o then_o strong_a in_o his_o god_n â—_z who_o power_n use_v to_o be_v perfect_v in_o weakness_n especial_o in_o weakness_n apprehend_v in_o this_o respect_n therefore_o let_v our_o heart_n lie_v low_a be_v we_o rather_o jealous_a then_o confident_a jealous_a of_o our_o weakness_n then_o confident_a of_o our_o strength_n the_o story_n of_o sanders_n and_o pendleton_n record_v in_o the_o book_n of_o martyr_n be_v well_o know_v a_o ship_n say_v to_o be_v well-mould_v why_o when_o there_o be_v a_o due_a proportion_n observe_v in_o her_o dimension_n a_o due_a proportion_n for_o length_n a_o breadth_n and_o depth_n grace_n
