A58130 A dialogue betwixt two Protestants in answer to a popish catechism called A short catechism against all sectaries : plainly shewing that the members of the Church of England are no sectaries but true Catholicks and that our Church is a found part of Christ's holy Catholick Church in whose communion therefore the people of this nation are most strictly bound in conscience to remain : in two parts. Rawlet, John, 1642-1686. 1685 (1685) Wing R352; ESTC R11422 171,932 286

read_v they_o so_o do_v we_o as_o plain_o see_v that_o after_o consecration_n the_o bread_n and_o wine_n still_o remain_v in_o their_o natural_a substance_n and_o therefore_o be_v make_v the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n in_o a_o spiritual_a and_o mystical_a sense_n according_a to_o the_o most_o common_a acceptance_n of_o such_o phrase_n that_o relate_v to_o sacrament_n as_o be_v before_o show_v l._n you_o need_v add_v nothing_o more_o to_o clear_v this_o matter_n nor_o can_v i_o imagine_v what_o reply_n they_o can_v make_v except_o they_o shall_v say_v that_o we_o must_v not_o in_o this_o case_n trust_v our_o sense_n but_o exercise_n of_o our_o faith_n t._n this_o indeed_o they_o do_v say_v but_o with_o no_o manner_n of_o reason_n for_o though_o god_n require_v the_o exercise_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o believe_v what_o he_o have_v reveal_v though_o our_o sense_n can_v reach_v to_o or_o discern_v it_o yet_o we_o never_o read_v in_o the_o whole_a book_n of_o scripture_n that_o ever_o he_o require_v man_n to_o believe_v any_o thing_n direct_o contrary_a to_o the_o evidence_n of_o their_o sense_n to_o believe_v it_o be_v dark_a as_o midnight_n when_o they_o see_v the_o sun_n shine_v at_o noonday_n to_o believe_v the_o same_o man_n to_o lie_v dead_a in_o his_o grave_n who_o they_o see_v alive_a walk_v before_o they_o for_o at_o this_o rate_n all_o our_o saviour_n miracle_n have_v be_v wrought_v in_o vain_a if_o man_n must_v not_o believe_v their_o own_o eye_n as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v for_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o almighty_a god_n have_v so_o frame_v our_o nature_n that_o we_o be_v to_o be_v direct_v and_o guide_v by_o our_o sense_n in_o those_o matter_n that_o proper_o belong_v to_o they_o nor_o can_v we_o i_o think_v in_o this_o present_a state_n have_v more_o clear_a and_o full_a assurance_n of_o any_o thing_n than_o what_o our_o sense_n when_o sound_a and_o perfect_a convey_v to_o we_o and_o therefore_o i_o have_v say_v our_o saviour_n take_v this_o way_n to_o give_v assurance_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o gospel_n and_o of_o his_o resurrection_n by_o that_o satisfaction_n he_o give_v to_o the_o very_a sense_n of_o men._n thus_o st._n john_n when_o he_o will_v give_v the_o clear_a and_o full_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o christian_a doctrine_n he_o tell_v we_o that_o which_o we_o have_v hear_v which_o we_o have_v see_v with_o our_o eye_n which_o our_o hand_n have_v handle_v declare_v we_o unto_o you_o 1_o joh._n 1._o 1_o 2_o 3._o now_o all_o this_o may_v assure_v we_o that_o those_o word_n this_o be_v my_o body_n be_v not_o to_o be_v take_v in_o such_o a_o sense_n as_o will_v engage_v we_o to_o the_o belief_n of_o transubstantiation_n nay_o the_o word_n of_o god_n itself_o assure_v we_o that_o they_o be_v not_o since_o in_o this_o word_n as_o i_o have_v show_v from_o many_o place_n the_o holy_a bread_n in_o the_o sacrament_n be_v call_v bread_n after_o consecration_n and_o therefore_o be_v we_o so_o to_o believe_v it_o and_o be_v to_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o his_o body_n spiritual_o and_o sacramental_o and_o so_o neither_o one_o text_n contradict_v another_o nor_o will_v our_o faith_n contradict_v our_o sense_n l._n this_o be_v easy_a and_o intelligible_a and_o neither_o offer_n violence_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n nor_o to_o the_o reason_n of_o our_o own_o mind_n t._n yet_o further_o let_v i_o add_v if_o the_o sense_n of_o all_o man_n throughout_o the_o whole_a world_n be_v thus_o deceive_v as_o they_o must_v be_v if_o transubstantiation_n be_v true_a then_o be_v all_o certainty_n of_o any_o thing_n whatever_o in_o a_o manner_n utter_o destroy_v how_o can_v i_o tell_v that_o i_o tread_v upon_o the_o earth_n that_o i_o see_v the_o heaven_n over_o my_o head_n or_o the_o sun_n shine_v in_o the_o firmament_n in_o these_o and_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o i_o think_v that_o i_o see_v or_o hear_v my_o sense_n may_v be_v impose_v upon_o as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o present_a case_n and_o how_o then_o can_v i_o be_v sure_a that_o any_o revelation_n be_v ever_o make_v from_o god_n to_o man_n or_o how_o can_v any_o man_n be_v sure_a of_o it_o though_o a_o voice_n come_v to_o he_o from_o heaven_n or_o a_o vision_n appear_v to_o he_o all_o this_o may_v be_v but_o idle_a fancy_n and_o delusion_n his_o hear_v and_o his_o sight_n be_v not_o to_o be_v trust_v yea_o let_v this_o opinion_n be_v admit_v and_o how_o can_v we_o be_v certain_a of_o the_o truth_n of_o that_o which_o god_n have_v in_o his_o word_n reveal_v for_o if_o he_o deceive_v i_o one_o way_n why_o not_o another_o the_o same_o holy_a and_o true_a god_n who_o have_v reveal_v his_o will_n in_o holy_a scripture_n have_v also_o make_v another_o sort_n of_o revelation_n in_o the_o work_n of_o nature_n he_o have_v give_v i_o sense_n of_o see_v hear_v etc._n etc._n and_o have_v propose_v object_n agreeable_a thereto_o now_o if_o i_o believe_v he_o to_o be_v so_o holy_a and_o good_a that_o he_o will_v not_o deceive_v i_o in_o his_o word_n why_o may_v i_o not_o from_o the_o same_o goodness_n argue_v that_o he_o will_v not_o deceive_v i_o in_o his_o work_n but_o if_o he_o shall_v do_v it_o in_o the_o latter_a why_o may_v he_o not_o in_o the_o former_a also_o l._n they_o may_v say_v this_o be_v a_o particular_a case_n and_o therefore_o though_o our_o sense_n may_v herein_o be_v mistake_v yet_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o suspect_v they_o at_o other_o time_n t._n a_o particular_a case_n it_o be_v indeed_o and_o such_o as_o nothing_o like_o it_o can_v be_v instance_a in_o nor_o yet_o any_o good_a reason_n assign_v why_o our_o sense_n may_v not_o at_o any_o other_o time_n be_v deceive_v as_o well_o as_o in_o this_o matter_n but_o strange_a of_o all_o it_o be_v that_o we_o have_v no_o warning_n give_v we_o in_o scripture_n not_o to_o trust_v our_o sense_n in_o this_o particular_a case_n though_o in_o all_o other_o we_o may_v nor_o do_v we_o find_v any_o thing_n say_v to_o take_v off_o the_o prejudice_n that_o may_v arise_v in_o man_n mind_n against_o so_o strange_a a_o doctrine_n we_o hear_v of_o no_o objection_n make_v of_o old_a against_o it_o by_o the_o enemy_n of_o christianity_n nor_o of_o any_o answer_n give_v to_o silence_n or_o prevent_v such_o objection_n nay_o on_o the_o contrary_a as_o i_o have_v say_v when_o the_o capernaite_v mistake_v our_o saviour_n meaning_n he_o let_v they_o know_v that_o his_o discourse_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v in_o a_o spiritual_a sense_n joh._n 6._o 63._o thus_o certain_o the_o apostle_n understand_v it_o as_o also_o those_o word_n this_o be_v my_o body_n else_o sure_o we_o shall_v have_v hear_v of_o their_o doubt_n and_o objection_n at_o least_o they_o will_v have_v make_v some_o further_a enquiry_n about_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o they_o else_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o we_o never_o find_v the_o least_o mention_n of_o this_o same_o doctrine_n in_o any_o of_o the_o apostle_n sermon_n or_o in_o the_o epistle_n write_v to_o any_o of_o the_o church_n nay_o though_o there_o be_v so_o fair_a a_o occasion_n offer_v to_o st._n paul_n when_o he_o discourse_n about_o the_o lords-supper_n 1_o cor._n 11._o where_o he_o tell_v they_o that_o what_o he_o have_v receive_v of_o the_o lord_n he_o deliver_v to_o they_o but_o he_o be_v there_o so_o far_o from_o explain_v or_o assert_v the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n that_o he_o teach_v the_o direct_a contrary_n in_o call_v it_o bread_n over_o and_o over_o after_o consecration_n l._n yet_o i_o have_v hear_v some_o argue_v for_o it_o from_o those_o word_n of_o he_o that_o he_o who_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n vers._n 27._o now_o say_v they_o how_o can_v this_o be_v so_o heinous_a a_o sin_n if_o the_o natural_a body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o present_a in_o the_o sacrament_n t._n for_o that_o let_v the_o apostle_n own_o word_n decide_v it_o for_o he_o there_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o who_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n unworthy_o be_v thus_o guilty_a so_o that_o it_o be_v bread_n which_o be_v eat_v and_o consequent_o wine_n which_o be_v drink_v by_o the_o receiver_n but_o to_o do_v this_o unworthy_o and_o irreverent_o rush_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o common_a meal_n not_o due_o consider_v the_o great_a importance_n and_o design_n of_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o it_o be_v a_o commemoration_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o a_o spiritual_a feast_n upon_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n this_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o heinous_a sin_n be_v a_o affront_n to_o christ_n himself_o and_o a_o profanation_n of_o his_o sacred_a ordinance_n this_o be_v mean_v by_o
a_o dialogue_n betwixt_o two_o protestant_n in_o answer_n to_o a_o popish_a catechism_n call_v a_o short_a catechism_n against_o all_o sectary_n plain_o show_v that_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v no_o sectary_n but_o true_a catholic_n and_o that_o our_o church_n be_v a_o sound_a part_n of_o christ_n holy_a catholic_n church_n in_o who_o communion_n therefore_o the_o people_n of_o this_o nation_n be_v most_o strict_o bind_v in_o conscience_n to_o remain_v in_o two_o part_n if_o any_o man_n preach_v any_o other_o gospel_n unto_o you_o than_o that_o you_o have_v receive_v let_v he_o be_v accurse_v gal._n 1._o 9_o london_n print_v for_o samuel_n tidmarsh_n at_o the_o kings-head_n in_o cornhill_n next_o house_n to_o the_o royal_a exchange_n 1685._o the_o preface_n i_o do_v not_o think_v there_o needs_o any_o excuse_n to_o be_v make_v for_o answer_v a_o book_n write_v against_o our_o religion_n if_o there_o be_v i_o can_v true_o produce_v that_o common_a one_o of_o be_v put_v upon_o it_o by_o friend_n for_o it_o be_v now_o more_o than_o a_o year_n since_o some_o very_a worthy_a friend_n to_o who_o my_o obligation_n be_v too_o great_a to_o dispute_v their_o command_n do_v put_v into_o my_o band_n a_o little_a popish_a book_n call_v a_o short_a catechism_n against_o all_o sectary_n say_v to_o be_v translate_v by_o c._n m._n desire_v i_o to_o write_v a_o plain_a answer_n thereto_o by_o way_n of_o dialogue_n such_o as_o may_v be_v fit_v for_o the_o capacity_n of_o common_a people_n in_o obedience_n to_o who_o i_o present_o betake_v myself_o to_o the_o work_n wherein_o i_o have_v proceed_v very_o slow_o be_v daily_o interrupt_v with_o other_o employment_n but_o now_o at_o length_n have_v finish_v it_o i_o present_v it_o to_o the_o world_n hearty_o wish_v it_o may_v have_v a_o success_n answerable_a to_o the_o truth_n and_o goodness_n of_o the_o cause_n i_o maintain_v and_o to_o the_o design_n both_o of_o myself_o in_o write_v and_o publish_v it_o and_o of_o my_o friend_n in_o put_v i_o upon_o it_o i_o be_o not_o so_o vain_a as_o to_o pretend_v to_o have_v say_v any_o thing_n new_a on_o a_o subject_a so_o very_o common_a and_o which_o for_o a_o long_a time_n have_v exercise_v the_o pen_n of_o very_a many_o person_n of_o great_a will_n and_o learning_n both_o in_o our_o own_o and_o other_o nation_n let_v it_o suffice_v what_o i_o hope_v without_o any_o vanity_n may_v be_v say_v that_o i_o think_v i_o have_v here_o deliver_v certain_a and_o solid_a truth_n in_o plain_a and_o easy_a word_n that_o even_o he_o that_o run_v may_v read_v and_o understand_v the_o same_o i_o can_v also_o true_o add_v that_o in_o answer_v this_o my_o popish_a author_n i_o have_v use_v all_o manner_n of_o honest_a and_o fair_a deal_n as_o become_v a_o sincere_a lover_n of_o truth_n i_o have_v not_o indeed_o always_o follow_v he_o word_n for_o word_n especial_o not_o in_o his_o second_o and_o three_o chapter_n in_o the_o former_a of_o which_o he_o endeavour_v to_o prove_v that_o protestant_n have_v not_o the_o mark_n of_o a_o true_a church_n in_o the_o latter_a that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v they_o these_o two_o i_o have_v handle_v together_o and_o though_o i_o have_v leave_v out_o much_o of_o his_o revile_v language_n which_o i_o think_v need_v no_o answer_n nor_o deserve_v any_o notice_n yet_o i_o do_v not_o know_v that_o i_o have_v pass_v over_o any_o one_o argument_n either_o there_o or_o in_o any_o other_o place_n some_o perhaps_o may_v look_v on_o it_o as_o a_o fault_n that_o i_o have_v often_o follow_v he_o too_o punctual_o which_o have_v occasion_v the_o frequent_a repetition_n of_o the_o same_o thing_n but_o this_o may_v be_v useful_a to_o some_o reader_n if_o i_o have_v not_o every_o where_o quote_v his_o very_a word_n as_o for_o the_o most_o part_n i_o have_v do_v yet_o i_o be_o sure_a i_o have_v never_o willing_o misrepresent_v his_o sense_n nor_o propose_v his_o argument_n with_o disadvantage_n but_o rather_o have_v add_v what_o i_o think_v may_v give_v strength_n thereto_o and_o as_o i_o know_v not_o that_o i_o have_v any_o where_o overlook_v one_o argument_n without_o answer_v it_o so_o neither_o have_v i_o return_v any_o answer_n but_o what_o in_o my_o conscience_n i_o think_v to_o be_v just_a and_o true_a and_o with_o which_o my_o own_o mind_n be_v well_o satisfy_v i_o have_v not_o so_o confine_v myself_o to_o this_o author_n but_o that_o i_o have_v also_o take_v notice_n of_o some_o other_o point_n which_o he_o never_o mention_n and_o though_o i_o may_v be_v far_o enough_o from_o have_v speak_v to_o all_o that_o be_v in_o controversy_n betwixt_o we_o and_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n yet_o i_o think_v i_o have_v not_o whole_o omit_v those_o which_o be_v of_o great_a weight_n at_o least_o i_o be_o well_o assure_v that_o i_o have_v say_v enough_o to_o satisfy_v any_o consider_v impartial_a person_n that_o there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o reason_n why_o any_o man_n shall_v depart_v from_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o betake_v himself_o to_o that_o of_o rome_n since_o the_o romish_a church_n have_v no_o manner_n of_o authority_n over_o we_o and_o be_v moreover_o guilty_a of_o retain_v and_o impose_v such_o gross_a and_o dangerous_a error_n and_o corruption_n as_o render_v her_o communion_n utter_o unlawful_a and_o unsafe_a even_o to_o those_o who_o have_v be_v bear_v and_o breed_v in_o her_o bosom_n how_o unreasonable_a then_o be_v it_o for_o we_o to_o revolt_v to_o she_o and_o indeed_o my_o chief_a design_n in_o this_o undertake_n be_v to_o confirm_v those_o of_o our_o own_o church_n in_o strict_a communion_n with_o it_o have_v little_a hope_n of_o bring_v over_o many_o proselyte_n from_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n where_o i_o can_v expect_v but_o few_o reader_n i_o must_v not_o look_v for_o many_o convert_v those_o guide_n who_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o trust_v their_o people_n with_o the_o holy_a scripture_n which_o yet_o they_o say_v be_v on_o their_o side_n will_v be_v less_o willing_a they_o shall_v read_v the_o book_n of_o those_o who_o they_o account_v their_o enemy_n and_o too_o oft_o they_o account_v we_o so_o as_o the_o jew_n do_v our_o saviour_n mere_o for_o tell_v they_o the_o truth_n but_o if_o any_o of_o that_o persuasion_n shall_v be_v so_o ingenuous_a as_o to_o give_v this_o little_a book_n a_o fair_a read_n and_o shall_v bring_v along_o with_o he_o a_o mind_n as_o free_v from_o passion_n and_o prejudice_n as_o the_o author_n have_v in_o write_v it_o i_o dare_v say_v that_o it_o will_v either_o persuade_v he_o to_o become_v a_o member_n of_o our_o most_o excellent_a church_n or_o at_o least_o convince_v he_o that_o we_o who_o be_v already_o so_o have_v great_a reason_n not_o to_o depart_v from_o it_o since_o this_o our_o departure_n beside_o all_o other_o fault_n involve_v in_o it_o will_v render_v we_o guilty_a of_o a_o apparent_a schism_n and_o this_o guilt_n i_o reckon_v be_v most_o just_o chargeable_a on_o the_o papist_n among_o we_o and_o not_o on_o they_o only_o but_o also_o on_o those_o protestant_a dissenter_n as_o they_o be_v common_o call_v of_o what_o denomination_n soever_o who_o separate_v from_o we_o into_o distinct_a society_n which_o they_o set_v up_o in_o opposition_n to_o our_o church_n as_o by_o law_n establish_v for_o if_o in_o this_o church_n all_o thing_n needful_a to_o salvation_n be_v afford_v and_o no_o sinful_a condition_n impose_v then_o do_v they_o make_v a_o causeless_a sinful_a separation_n who_o withdraw_v from_o its_o communion_n neither_o can_v these_o our_o dissenter_n just_o plead_v the_o same_o argument_n for_o their_o separation_n from_o we_o that_o our_o church_n can_v for_o its_o withdraw_n from_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n or_o rather_o for_o reform_v herself_o from_o the_o corruption_n of_o that_o church_n as_o i_o have_v brief_o show_v towards_o the_o end_n of_o this_o treatise_n they_o who_o will_v see_v this_o more_o full_o demonstrate_v let_v they_o read_v a_o discourse_n which_o purposely_o handle_v this_o subject_n be_v one_o of_o the_o case_n late_o write_v as_o be_v say_v by_o some_o of_o the_o london_n minister_n and_o indeed_o i_o scarce_o know_v any_o book_n that_o i_o will_v soon_o recommend_v to_o the_o common_a reader_n for_o his_o direction_n in_o these_o matter_n than_o all_o those_o discourse_n which_o treat_v of_o the_o several_a point_n in_o difference_n betwixt_o our_o church_n and_o the_o nonconformist_n and_o also_o of_o some_o of_o those_o betwixt_o we_o and_o the_o papist_n and_o be_v general_o write_v with_o such_o clearness_n of_o judgement_n and_o with_o such_o calmness_n and_o good_a temper_n as_o may_v render_v they_o more_o acceptable_a and_o more_o useful_a through_o god_n
teach_v the_o people_n to_o observe_v all_o thing_n whatsoever_o he_o have_v command_v they_o and_o whoso_o do_v these_o thing_n shall_v certain_o be_v save_v l._n we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o doubt_v it_o since_o our_o lord_n jesus_n be_v the_o author_n of_o eternal_a salvation_n to_o all_o that_o obey_v he_o but_o pray_v what_o mean_v this_o writer_n by_o his_o distinction_n betwixt_o the_o command_n and_o the_o counsel_n of_o our_o saviour_n t._n as_o to_o that_o you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v some_o eminent_a instance_n of_o piety_n and_o zeal_n which_o be_v not_o express_o enjoin_v in_o the_o gospel_n to_o all_o man_n upon_o condition_n of_o salvation_n but_o rather_o be_v recommend_v by_o our_o bless_a saviour_n to_o some_o particular_a person_n in_o circumstance_n proper_a for_o they_o to_o such_o as_o be_v inflame_v with_o great_a love_n and_o furnish_v with_o peculiar_a advantage_n and_o large_a measure_n of_o grace_n be_v able_a to_o perform_v they_o such_o for_o instance_n be_v that_o about_o live_v a_o single_a life_n in_o order_n to_o our_o great_a freedom_n in_o god_n service_n which_o be_v style_v make_v ourselves_o eunuch_n for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n now_o this_o be_v not_o absolute_o command_v but_o rather_o i_o say_v recommend_v to_o such_o as_o can_v both_o live_v chaste_o in_o a_o single_a state_n and_o also_o be_v capable_a all_o circumstance_n consider_v of_o do_v god_n most_o service_n in_o that_o state_n and_o this_o i_o reckon_v be_v leave_v to_o every_o man_n own_o prudence_n to_o determine_v where_o before_o some_o learned_a man_n of_o our_o own_o church_n as_o well_o as_o the_o romish_a do_v call_v this_o a_o counsel_n rather_o than_o a_o command_n since_o he_o that_o marry_v sin_v not_o and_o yet_o he_o that_o forbear_v to_o marry_v in_o order_n to_o god_n glory_n and_o the_o interest_n of_o religion_n do_v hereby_o express_v his_o virtue_n and_o zeal_n in_o a_o more_o eminent_a degree_n and_o therefore_o according_a to_o that_o of_o st._n paul_n though_o he_o that_o marry_v do_v well_o yet_o he_o that_o in_o this_o case_n marry_v not_o do_v better_a and_o i_o find_v some_o that_o look_v on_o this_o as_o the_o only_a instance_n of_o a_o counsel_n distinct_a from_o a_o command_n but_o the_o romanist_n add_v more_o as_o particular_o that_o of_o voluntary_a poverty_n from_o the_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o the_o young_a man_n if_o thou_o will_v be_v perfect_a sell_v all_o that_o thou_o have_v and_o give_v it_o to_o the_o poor_a etc._n etc._n what_o be_v there_o command_v to_o this_o particular_a person_n they_o call_v a_o counsel_n to_o other_o though_o for_o what_o good_a reason_n i_o know_v not_o l._n but_o wherein_o do_v it_o appear_v that_o their_o church_n take_v the_o way_n of_o these_o counsel_n more_o than_o other_o christian_n t._n they_o pretend_v to_o do_v it_o above_o other_o because_o they_o strict_o forbid_v their_o clergy_n to_o marry_v and_o do_v mighty_o cry_v up_o a_o single_a life_n as_o a_o state_n of_o great_a perfection_n and_o for_o this_o end_n they_o have_v monastery_n and_o nunnery_n into_o which_o multitude_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n enter_v and_o withdraw_a themselves_o from_o common_a conversation_n and_o business_n do_v vow_n to_o live_v a_o single_a life_n all_o their_o day_n these_o people_n they_o call_v the_o religious_a as_o if_o religion_n consist_v in_o run_v out_o of_o the_o world_n rather_o than_o in_o abstain_v from_o the_o evil_n of_o it_o of_o these_o they_o have_v several_a order_n and_o most_o of_o they_o vow_n poverty_n as_o well_o as_o chastity_n they_o renounce_v all_o propriety_n in_o worldly_a good_n and_o some_o of_o they_o live_v by_o beg_v though_o common_o this_o be_v a_o mere_a cheat_n for_o many_o of_o these_o order_n have_v vast_a riches_n among_o they_o in_o common_a though_o none_o of_o they_o can_v lay_v claim_n to_o a_o single_a share_n for_o himself_o yea_o all_o their_o loud_a talk_n of_o sanctity_n and_o strictness_n above_o other_o be_v mere_a pretence_n and_o proud_a boast_n as_o i_o have_v former_o show_v you_o whilst_o they_o pretend_v to_o follow_v christ_n counsel_n they_o do_v in_o many_o thing_n break_v his_o plain_a command_n as_o even_o now_o you_o observe_v like_o the_o pharisee_n of_o old_a who_o whilst_o they_o be_v very_o zealous_a for_o their_o own_o tradition_n make_v void_a the_o commandment_n of_o god_n in_o some_o thing_n they_o make_v the_o way_n to_o heaven_n narrow_a than_o christ_n himself_o have_v do_v but_o in_o other_o they_o take_v that_o liberty_n which_o he_o never_o give_v they_o and_o afford_v man_n hope_n of_o salvation_n on_o easy_a term_n than_o the_o gospel_n will_v warrant_v as_o be_v evident_a in_o their_o doctrine_n of_o attrition_n before_o mention_v even_o this_o their_o strictness_n in_o enjoin_v a_o single_a life_n to_o all_o clergyman_n be_v a_o occasion_n of_o great_a looseness_n and_o by_o this_o mean_v whoredom_n itself_o which_o god_n have_v so_o severe_o forbid_v be_v count_v a_o less_o crime_n and_o dishonour_n in_o man_n of_o that_o order_n than_o marriage_n which_o their_o church_n condemn_v though_o god_n allow_v it_o nay_o and_o this_o open_o maintain_v by_o some_o of_o their_o strict_a writer_n but_o i_o wonder_v who_o give_v their_o church_n authority_n to_o turn_v christ_n counsel_n allow_v that_o distinction_n into_o a_o command_n to_o any_o one_o order_n of_o man_n indeed_o our_o bless_a saviour_n have_v give_v neither_o command_n nor_o counsel_n to_o clergyman_n more_o than_o other_o to_o abstain_v from_o marriage_n some_o of_o the_o apostle_n have_v wife_n st._n peter_n among_o the_o rest_n as_o we_o find_v mat._n 8._o 14._o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o he_o to_o marry_v also_o as_o well_o as_o st._n peter_n and_o other_o apostle_n 1_o cor._n 9_o 5._o and_o among_o other_o qualification_n of_o a_o bishop_n 1_o tim._n 3._o 2._o tit._n 1._o 6._o you_o find_v mention_v make_v of_o his_o wife_n and_o child_n without_o the_o least_o intimation_n that_o this_o be_v either_o unlawful_a or_o indecent_a and_o for_o some_o age_n after_o the_o apostle_n the_o marriage_n of_o clergyman_n be_v common_o allow_v some_o of_o the_o father_n it_o be_v true_a do_v mighty_o extol_v perpetual_a virginity_n and_o seem_v less_o favourable_a to_o marriage_n than_o they_o have_v any_o just_a ground_n for_o since_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o can_v be_v allege_v either_o from_o scripture_n or_o reason_n which_o may_v reflect_v the_o least_o dishonour_n upon_o chaste_a marriage_n in_o any_o sort_n of_o man_n whatever_o for_o it_o be_v institute_v in_o the_o time_n of_o man_n innocency_n be_v allow_v to_o the_o priest_n under_o the_o law_n and_o be_v say_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v honourable_a in_o all_o man_n without_o exception_n of_o one_o or_o other_o but_o the_o truth_n be_v as_o matter_n be_v now_o manage_v in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n which_o in_o the_o way_n of_o worldly_a subtlety_n and_o cunning_n be_v very_o wise_a in_o her_o generation_n this_o restraint_n of_o the_o clergy_n from_o marry_v be_v a_o piece_n of_o singular_a policy_n tend_v mighty_o to_o advance_v the_o wealth_n and_o power_n of_o their_o church_n and_o render_v the_o clergy_n less_o dependent_a upon_o prince_n and_o consequent_o more_o entire_o at_o the_o pope_n pleasure_n but_o wave_v these_o crafty_a contrivance_n and_o all_o vain_a pretence_n to_o a_o strictness_n great_a than_o the_o gospel_n require_v our_o church_n as_o i_o have_v before_o tell_v you_o do_v plain_o and_o honest_o propose_v the_o same_o way_n to_o salvation_n which_o our_o bless_a saviour_n himself_o have_v do_v even_o the_o way_n of_o repentance_n faith_n and_o uniform_a obedience_n to_o all_o his_o command_n she_o require_v all_o man_n whether_o marry_v or_o single_a to_o live_v in_o strict_a purity_n and_o chastity_n which_o will_v render_v the_o marriagebed_n undefiled_a but_o than_o whether_o of_o these_o state_n they_o will_v choose_v she_o leave_v all_o sort_n of_o man_n to_o their_o own_o liberty_n as_o our_o saviour_n have_v do_v she_o exhort_v and_o enjoin_v all_o man_n to_o be_v true_a to_o their_o baptismal_a vow_n in_o which_o they_o renounce_v the_o world_n with_o its_o pomp_n and_o vanity_n but_o do_v not_o call_v they_o to_o enter_v into_o any_o monastic_a vow_n nor_o persuade_v they_o to_o leave_v their_o friend_n their_o family_n and_o employment_n to_o run_v into_o hole_n and_o corner_n there_o to_o tell_v over_o their_o prayer_n by_o their_o bead_n and_o live_v in_o ease_n and_o idleness_n by_o the_o sweat_n of_o other_o man_n brow_n or_o go_v about_o to_o beg_v whilst_o they_o ought_v rather_o to_o work_v with_o their_o hand_n that_o they_o themselves_o may_v be_v able_a to_o give_v to_o those_o that_o need_n she_o earnest_o
