will_v give_v we_o leave_v to_o ascribe_v to_o man_n as_o a_o reason_n of_o his_o be_v true_o ingraff_v into_o christ_n he_o be_v capable_a of_o such_o a_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n but_o the_o principal_a and_o only_a active_a cause_n god_n 2._o from_o god_n be_v god_n power_n and_o goodness_n that_o cause_n beyond_o which_o it_o be_v a_o madness_n to_o inquire_v for_o any_o other_o cause_n the_o lord_n do_v please_v to_o bestow_v effectual_a grace_n upon_o those_o who_o he_o will_v receive_v to_o mercy_n whereby_o they_o have_v not_o alone_o their_o mind_n enlighten_v to_o some_o this_o grace_n all_o in_o the_o church_n will_v be_v hypocrite_n as_o well_o as_o any_o but_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o bestow_v that_o grace_n upon_o one_o who_o he_o have_v enable_v to_o desire_v it_o that_o he_o may_v gracious_o bestow_v it_o which_o to_o another_o he_o give_v not_o but_o leave_v he_o to_o his_o own_o carelessness_n of_o it_o that_o miss_v it_o by_o his_o own_o default_n his_o blood_n may_v be_v upon_o his_o own_o head_n so_o the_o perdition_n of_o hypocrite_n be_v of_o themselves_o because_o they_o willing_o refuse_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n which_o he_o do_v offer_v they_o the_o soundness_n and_o happiness_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n be_v of_o his_o free_a grace_n that_o break_v the_o yoke_n of_o sin_n which_o hold_v they_o under_o and_o make_v they_o willing_a of_o unwilling_a and_o able_a of_o unable_a to_o turn_v themselves_o unto_o he_o for_o to_o imagine_v as_o some_o will_v needs_o do_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v deal_v no_o more_o bountiful_o with_o one_o than_o with_o another_o of_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n but_o that_o the_o cause_n why_o one_o become_v a_o hypocrite_n the_o other_o prevail_v to_o uprightness_n be_v mere_o and_o whole_o in_o themselves_o be_v a_o fancy_n i_o think_v so_o contrary_a to_o all_o both_o scripture_n and_o experience_n of_o god_n saint_n that_o hardly_o can_v any_o be_v deceive_v with_o it_o but_o he_o that_o never_o feel_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v upright_o and_o whence_o it_o come_v and_o thus_o have_v we_o lay_v before_o you_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n chap._n iii_o show_v the_o description_n and_o sort_n of_o hypocrite_n now_o it_o be_v very_o requisite_a that_o we_o make_v a_o plain_a and_o sound_a explication_n of_o it_o to_o the_o intent_n that_o every_o man_n may_v discern_v of_o himself_o and_o of_o his_o own_o estate_n whether_o himself_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n yea_o or_o no._n we_o will_v therefore_o do_v our_o best_a to_o lay_v the_o matter_n open_v clear_o that_o it_o may_v be_v evident_o discover_v to_o they_o that_o will_v take_v the_o pain_n of_o inquire_v about_o the_o point_n who_o be_v guileful_a who_o without_o guile_n and_o for_o this_o purpose_n it_o be_v necessary_a to_o stand_v upon_o these_o four_o head_n first_o to_o show_v what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v second_o to_o show_v the_o diverse_a sort_n or_o rather_o degree_n of_o hypocrite_n three_o to_o set_v down_o some_o general_a note_n of_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o true-hearted_a and_o the_o hypocrite_n last_o to_o declare_v more_o particular_o the_o agreement_n &_o disagreement_n of_o they_o both_o in_o four_o principal_a and_o main_a grace_n whereof_o the_o one_o have_v alone_o the_o shadow_n the_o other_o the_o substance_n that_o be_v first_o in_o knowledge_n second_o in_o faith_n three_o in_o repentance_n fourthly_a in_o good_a life_n or_o in_o obedience_n first_o then_o for_o the_o describe_v of_o a_o hypocrite_n viz_o what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v viz_o we_o must_v make_v use_n of_o a_o necessary_a rule_n of_o logic_n which_o bid_v we_o to_o define_v the_o concrete_a by_o the_o abstract_n as_o they_o term_v it_o as_o no_o man_n can_v possible_o declare_v what_o a_o white_a thing_n be_v but_o by_o conceive_v and_o express_v what_o be_v whiteness_n nor_o what_o a_o proud_a man_n be_v but_o by_o understand_v what_o pride_n be_v nor_o what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v but_o by_o know_v what_o be_v hypocrisy_n and_o again_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o virtue_n and_o vice_n do_v not_o denominate_v their_o subject_n unless_o they_o be_v in_o they_o in_o so_o high_a a_o degree_n as_o to_o prevail_v and_o be_v predominant_a over_o their_o contrary_n as_o nothing_o be_v call_v white_a but_o that_o in_o which_o whiteness_n so_o prevail_v that_o it_o partake_v more_o of_o white_a than_o of_o any_o other_o colour_n and_o if_o a_o thing_n do_v so_o partake_v of_o whiteness_n we_o call_v it_o white_a though_o it_o fail_v much_o of_o the_o white_a whiteness_n that_o may_v be_v so_o be_v he_o call_v a_o proud_a man_n in_o who_o pride_n prevail_v a_o infidel_n who_o infidelity_n rule_v a_o revengeful_a man_n in_o who_o revenge_n do_v bear_v sway_n and_o a_o covetous_a man_n in_o who_o covetousness_n reign_v and_o so_o must_v we_o likewise_o conclude_v in_o the_o present_a matter_n that_o he_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n in_o who_o hypocrisy_n prevail_v and_o bear_v rule_v to_o the_o make_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n therefore_o three_o thing_n must_v concur_v rule_v a_o prosessor_n of_o christian_a religion_n in_o who_o hypocrisy_n rule_v first_o a_o fit_a subject_n viz._n such_o a_o one_o as_o do_v at_o least_o in_o appearance_n profess_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o christian_n and_o to_o believe_v in_o christ_n as_o nothing_o can_v be_v call_v a_o unfruitful_a branch_n if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o branch_n so_o neither_o can_v any_o man_n be_v term_v a_o hypocrite_n unless_o at_o least_o external_o he_o be_v in_o christ_n in_o this_o meaning_n as_o we_o now_o take_v the_o word_n hypocrite_n in_o opposition_n to_o a_o sound_a member_n of_o christ_n second_o there_o must_v be_v in_o that_o subject_n a_o adjunct_n that_o vice_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o three_o this_o vice_n must_v be_v in_o that_o subject_n in_o such_o degree_n as_o to_o bear_v to_o rule_v and_o to_o be_v as_o they_o term_v it_o predominant_a wherefore_o for_o our_o further_a information_n in_o this_o matter_n which_o be_v most_o exceed_o needful_a to_o be_v very_o distinct_o know_v and_o conceive_v of_o we_o must_v search_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o that_o crooked_a viz._n what_o hypocrisy_n be_v viz._n selfe-covering_a and_o selfe-cousening_a vice_n of_o hypocrisy_n about_o which_o we_o need_v not_o go_v far_o but_o alone_o turn_v our_o thought_n to_o the_o apostle_n description_n of_o it_o 3.5_o 2._o tim._n 3.5_o viz._n that_o it_o be_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n without_o the_o power_n thereof_o it_o a_o false_a feign_a goodness_n a_o goodness_n alone_o paint_v and_o put_v on_o and_o counterfeit_v in_o plain_a word_n thus_o you_o may_v describe_v it_o a_o corruption_n of_o the_o will_n sake_n a_o corruption_n of_o the_o will_n incline_v itself_o to_o do_v some_o good_a &_o leave_v some_o evil_n for_o one_o own_o sake_n whereby_o it_o incline_v itself_o to_o seem_v good_a by_o do_v some_o good_a and_o leave_v some_o evil_n for_o one_o own_o sake_n for_o every_o man_n be_v natural_o desirous_a to_o have_v other_o man_n esteem_v he_o good_a and_o to_o esteem_v of_o himself_o also_o as_o of_o one_o that_o be_v good_a and_o because_o neither_o will_v his_o neighbour_n conceive_v so_o of_o he_o neither_o can_v he_o so_o conceive_v of_o himself_o without_o some_o ground_n for_o such_o conceit_n he_o be_v therefore_o willing_a to_o do_v something_o that_o may_v work_v in_o other_o and_o in_o himself_o such_o a_o opinion_n of_o he_o and_o to_o avoid_v some_o other_o thing_n that_o may_v procure_v the_o contrary_a opinion_n yea_o every_o man_n natural_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v happy_a and_o willing_a to_o think_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v happy_a yet_o because_o this_o thought_n can_v be_v maintain_v without_o some_o colour_n of_o reason_n he_o be_v also_o willing_a to_o do_v some_o thing_n that_o he_o may_v think_v will_n further_o his_o happiness_n and_o avoid_v some_o say_v that_o unless_o they_o do_v seasonable_o recover_v themselves_o and_o return_v to_o their_o former_a goodness_n or_o more_o the_o lord_n will_v sure_o chastise_v they_o in_o grievous_a manner_n send_v some_o or_o other_o heavy_a calamity_n upon_o they_o either_o inward_a or_o outward_a or_o if_o he_o do_v not_o so_o fetch_v they_o home_o again_o this_o decay_n of_o seem_a grace_n be_v in_o truth_n the_o first_o degree_n of_o the_o cut_n off_o of_o hypocrite_n so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n continue_v thus_o in_o the_o wane_n he_o can_v enjoy_v no_o comfortable_a assurance_n of_o himself_o nor_o can_v other_o man_n maintain_v any_o full_a persuasion_n of_o he_o that_o he_o be_v upright_o but_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o misery_n of_o be_v always_o question_v both_o in_o the_o opinion_n of_o other_o and_o in_o the_o account_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n for_o matter_n of_o his_o entireness_n and_o truth_n and_o so_o though_o it_o be_v rashness_n to_o say_v that_o all_o they_o be_v dissembler_n that_o fare_v in_o this_o manner_n for_o a_o man_n may_v recover_v himself_o as_o i_o show_v above_o yet_o this_o may_v one_o safe_o say_v of_o such_o that_o they_o be_v so_o like_a to_o dissembler_n as_o neither_o other_o nor_o scarce_o themselves_o can_v distinguish_v they_o from_o hypocrite_n indeed_o there_o be_v one_o note_n of_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o winter_n of_o a_o true_a branch_n and_o the_o wither_a of_o a_o dead_a which_o we_o will_v anon_o show_v unto_o you_o but_o yet_o this_o note_n of_o difference_n will_v afford_v but_o a_o small_a quantity_n of_o comfort_n to_o they_o with_o who_o it_o be_v winter_n let_v that_o man_n therefore_o who_o soul_n be_v guilty_a of_o such_o decrease_n in_o piety_n see_v and_o take_v notice_n of_o its_o unhappiness_n woeful_a be_v the_o estate_n of_o he_o that_o if_o he_o be_v not_o a_o hypocrite_n yet_o be_v now_o become_v so_o near_o in_o likeness_n to_o that_o evil_a brood_n as_o his_o own_o feel_v and_o bewail_v if_o they_o be_v a_o heavy_a load_n and_o burden_n to_o you_o very_o troublesome_a and_o discontentfull_a to_o your_o mind_n you_o may_v have_v be_v true-hearted_a for_o all_o these_o faint_n and_o swoon_v and_o yet_o your_o case_n be_v much_o to_o be_v pity_v for_o the_o lord_n must_v be_v at_o pain_n to_o prune_v you_o that_o you_o may_v bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n because_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o as_o i_o say_v before_o but_o the_o over-growing_a of_o some_o corrupt_a lust_n that_o have_v bring_v you_o to_o this_o evil_a pass_n but_o if_o any_o among_o you_o be_v so_o fall_v away_o from_o his_o former_a show_n or_o beginning_n of_o piety_n that_o he_o be_v well_o pay_v with_o this_o his_o backwardness_n and_o take_v it_o for_o his_o glory_n that_o he_o be_v now_o grow_v lukewarm_a so_o boast_v in_o his_o shame_n let_v that_o man_n know_v that_o he_o be_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n before_o and_o that_o this_o be_v a_o beginning_n of_o his_o cut_n off_o from_o the_o vine_n yea_o and_o that_o his_o estate_n be_v not_o recoverable_a without_o exceed_v much_o labour_n and_o pain_n take_v notice_n therefore_o i_o entreat_v every_o soul_n among_o you_o whether_o it_o be_v decay_v and_o in_o what_o manner_n it_o stand_v affect_v under_o these_o decay_n that_o you_o may_v according_o censure_v yourselves_o and_o fruitful_o accept_v this_o than_o you_o be_v lay_v these_o thing_n to_o heart_n and_o put_v not_o off_o a_o reproof_n light_o consider_v with_o yourselves_o what_o corruption_n it_o be_v that_o as_o a_o bad_a humour_n become_v excessive_a have_v bring_v your_o soul_n into_o this_o consumption_n lament_v before_o god_n your_o shameful_a folly_n in_o bring_v the_o estate_n of_o your_o soul_n behind_o and_o cease_v not_o confess_v bewail_a and_o pray_v till_o you_o find_v yourselves_o quicken_v and_o restore_v assure_v yourselves_o that_o if_o you_o have_v be_v any_o other_o then_o arrant_a hypocrite_n and_o dry_a branch_n who_o be_v cut_v off_o be_v cast_v out_o and_o wither_v till_o they_o be_v gather_v up_o to_o burn_v you_o must_v sometime_o or_o other_o take_v the_o pain_n of_o thus_o restore_v god_n from_o man_n man._n 1._o from_o man._n because_o hypocrisy_n be_v one_o of_o the_o evil_a weed_n that_o do_v natural_o grow_v in_o his_o corrupt_a soul_n it_o be_v very_o agreeable_a to_o his_o naughty_a heart_n to_o dissemble_v goodness_n in_o some_o case_n and_o have_v see_v the_o truth_n to_o make_v show_n of_o yield_v though_o in_o heart_n he_o yield_v not_o unto_o it_o for_o oftentimes_o the_o truth_n be_v lay_v open_a so_o clear_o before_o the_o eye_n of_o his_o mind_n partly_o through_o the_o evidenee_n of_o outward_a proof_n partly_o through_o the_o inward_a light_n of_o illumination_n as_o he_o can_v but_o acknowledge_v it_o as_o the_o eye_n can_v choose_v but_o see_v such_o object_n as_o be_v set_v in_o convenient_a manner_n and_o distance_n before_o it_o yea_o many_o time_n custom_n education_n and_o bring_v up_o in_o common_o receive_v truth_n do_v so_o accustom_v and_o wont_a the_o mind_n unto_o they_o as_o usual_a eat_n do_v the_o pallate_n unto_o some_o kind_n of_o food_n that_o he_o can_v tell_v how_o to_o deny_v they_o yea_o that_o for_o his_o credit_n sake_n and_o out_o of_o a_o desire_n to_o be_v well_o respect_v among_o his_o neighbour_n he_o
