must_v be_v confess_v that_o in_o so_o do_v we_o do_v not_o imitate_v our_o lord_n and_o master_n who_o be_v meek_a and_o lowly_a and_o by_o his_o self-denial_n ascribe_v such_o his_o good_a work_n which_o can_v not_o be_v hide_v entire_o to_o god_n glory_n why_o what_o grace_n we_o have_v do_v confess_o come_v from_o god_n the_o author_n and_o giver_n of_o every_o good_a thing_n and_o slavery_n and_o filth_n of_o sin_n and_o from_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n too_o then_o this_o shall_v engage_v our_o endeavour_n to_o rescue_v sinner_n from_o the_o error_n of_o their_o way_n and_o to_o do_v as_o he_o do_v that_o be_v to_o bring_v they_o to_o god_n by_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n this_o be_v a_o noble_a lesson_n and_o have_v our_o saviour_n love_n and_o goodwill_n as_o well_o as_o his_o holiness_n for_o its_o pattern_n for_o a_o man_n may_v be_v good_a and_o holy_a himself_o and_o yet_o self-interest_n i_o mean_v a_o allowable_a self-interest_n may_v be_v at_o the_o bottom_n of_o it_o he_o may_v fear_v god_n vengeance_n shall_v he_o be_v wicked_a and_o so_o his_o goodness_n may_v have_v a_o eye_n to_o his_o security_n but_o he_o who_o endeavour_v to_o reclaim_v another_o sinner_n from_o the_o error_n of_o his_o way_n mix_v charity_n with_o his_o piety_n by_o make_v another_o welfare_n his_o aim_n and_o by_o make_v more_o people_n happy_a beside_o himself_o indeed_o the_o grand_a business_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v into_o the_o world_n be_v to_o redeem_v we_o from_o the_o slavery_n and_o dominion_n of_o sin_n for_o if_o we_o be_v not_o redeem_v from_o our_o therefore_o may_v prove_v a_o very_a good_a guide_n to_o we_o in_o our_o search_n after_o the_o last_o to_o which_o i_o will_v add_v 3._o that_o to_o talk_v of_o truth_n and_o certainty_n and_o much_o more_o of_o infallibility_n in_o religion_n when_o the_o determination_n and_o resolution_n of_o such_o certainty_n or_o infallibility_n be_v mischievous_a or_o pernicious_a to_o the_o real_a happiness_n of_o mankind_n or_o any_o other_o way_n wicked_a be_v nonsense_n and_o banter_n and_o be_v in_o deed_n and_o truth_n a_o imposition_n upon_o man_n understanding_n in_o order_n to_o damnify_v the_o honest_a and_o real_a interest_n and_o true_a happiness_n of_o mankind_n but_o to_o return_v to_o our_o design_n that_o man_n may_v be_v the_o more_o hearty_o engage_v to_o believe_v what_o have_v be_v say_v and_o to_o practice_v what_o they_o shall_v so_o believe_v i_o shall_v still_o go_v on_o to_o press_v the_o present_a exhortation_n more_o home_n by_o advise_v they_o to_o try_v the_o experiment_n whether_o the_o doctrine_n now_o deliver_v which_o be_v that_o our_o happiness_n must_v come_v from_o our_o practice_n and_o love_n of_o holiness_n be_v true_a or_o no._n the_o proposal_n be_v fair_a and_o reasonable_a and_o there_o be_v no_o man_n who_o have_v not_o one_o way_n or_o other_o make_v a_o great_a many_o experiment_n in_o the_o case_n for_o our_o trial_n have_v succeed_v his_o success_n do_v fall_v in_o with_o my_o proposal_n and_o back_o the_o present_a exhortation_n now_o because_o our_o happiness_n can_v as_o we_o have_v see_v so_o much_o as_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v lodge_v abroad_o but_o if_o it_o be_v our_o happiness_n it_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v lodge_v within_o we_o at_o home_n and_o in_o our_o own_o possession_n therefore_o to_o engage_v man_n to_o entertain_v our_o present_a exhortation_n the_o more_o hearty_o and_o by_o confequence_n to_o make_v the_o trial_n of_o the_o propose_a experiment_n the_o more_o willing_o i_o will_v desire_v they_o by_o a_o serious_a reflection_n to_o consider_v whether_o all_o wickedness_n do_v not_o constant_o bring_v misery_n along_o with_o it_o into_o that_o breast_n where_o itself_o be_v entertain_v for_o if_o we_o suppose_v a_o man_n to_o be_v wicked_a we_o must_v at_o the_o same_o time_n for_o the_o most_o part_n for_o there_o be_v but_o one_o except_v case_n suppose_v that_o he_o know_v that_o he_o be_v so_o and_o when_o that_o be_v once_o suppose_a such_o a_o supposition_n will_v acquaint_v we_o with_o these_o follow_a truth_n that_o he_o will_v have_v one_o think_v employ_v upon_o god_n law_n which_o command_v his_o duty_n and_o another_o thought_n upon_o his_o own_o action_n which_o transgress_v that_o law_n and_o a_o three_o thought_n which_o shall_v by_o compare_v the_o one_o with_o the_o other_o discover_v the_o disagreement_n nay_o the_o contrariety_n that_o be_v between_o the_o law_n and_o such_o his_o action_n now_o here_o be_v such_o a_o vast_a difference_n in_o the_o value_n of_o the_o mischief_n do_v by_o the_o several_a wound_n that_o in_o the_o first_o case_n the_o fault_n of_o such_o mischief_n shall_v be_v esteem_v capital_a when_o perhaps_o in_o the_o last_o it_o shall_v hardly_o be_v think_v penal_a the_o suffering_n therefore_o of_o the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n may_v be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o expiation_n rational_o satisfy_v that_o it_o be_v as_o well_o worth_a our_o saviour_n suffering_n to_o bring_v all_o these_o thing_n to_o pass_v though_o his_o enemy_n man_n have_v his_o interest_n in_o it_o as_o it_o be_v for_o he_o to_o make_v man_n at_o first_o now_o what_o we_o have_v say_v be_v a_o sufficient_a answer_n to_o the_o objection_n upon_o supposition_n that_o any_o or_o every_o sin_n be_v of_o so_o malignant_a a_o nature_n that_o the_o just_a punishment_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v eternal_a but_o though_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o eternal_a punishment_n most_o express_o assert_v by_o the_o scripture_n and_o therefore_o we_o do_v by_o no_o mean_n question_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o whatever_o the_o socinian_o may_v pretend_v to_o the_o contrary_a yet_o perhaps_o it_o be_v not_o so_o certain_a that_o the_o scripture_n do_v allot_v any_o such_o punishment_n to_o any_o other_o sin_n beside_o unbelief_n or_o which_o amount_v to_o much_o the_o same_o thing_n though_o in_o other_o word_n a_o final_a impenitence_n for_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o all_o other_o sin_n if_o they_o be_v true_o and_o hearty_o repent_v for_o shall_v in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n merit_n be_v forgive_v and_o it_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o no_o man_n shall_v undergo_v a_o eternal_a punishment_n for_o those_o sin_n which_o shall_v be_v forgive_v if_o therefore_o we_o do_v assert_v what_o be_v most_o true_a that_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o die_v to_o save_v unbeliever_n or_o impenitent_a sinner_n and_o that_o they_o be_v the_o only_a sinner_n to_o who_o eternal_a punishment_n be_v assign_v in_o such_o a_o case_n the_o objection_n that_o his_o temporal_a punishment_n can_v not_o take_v away_o a_o eternal_a punishment_n will_v be_v of_o no_o force_n because_o in_o such_o case_n eternal_a punishment_n be_v not_o design_v to_o be_v take_v away_o for_o every_o unbeliever_n and_o impenitent_a person_n shall_v suffer_v it_o notwithstanding_o our_o saviour_n death_n and_o there_o do_v not_o want_v very_o good_a probability_n and_o those_o too_o in_o no_o wise_a disagree_v to_o scripture-revelation_n that_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o who_o sin_n shall_v not_o be_v pardon_v after_o the_o resurrection_n shall_v have_v just_a so_o much_o punishment_n as_o they_o do_v in_o justice_n deserve_v be_v that_o more_o or_o less_o but_o that_o such_o their_o punishment_n shall_v not_o therefore_o be_v eternal_a because_o such_o their_o sin_n do_v deserve_v such_o eternal_a punishment_n but_o because_o they_o refuse_v and_o reject_v those_o easy_a mean_n which_o god_n have_v provide_v in_o a_o saviour_n by_o a_o due_a use_n of_o which_o they_o may_v have_v escape_v all_o punishment_n whatsoever_o now_o because_o it_o be_v absurd_a to_o imagine_v that_o our_o saviour_n undergo_v death_n to_o save_v those_o who_o shall_v slight_v or_o reject_v that_o salvation_n which_o he_o purchase_v by_o his_o death_n
must_v principal_o and_o in_o the_o first_o place_n design_v their_o obedience_n and_o not_o their_o punishment_n and_o therefore_o not_o their_o forgiveness_n neither_o it_o will_v be_v in_o effect_n to_o contradict_v his_o own_o design_n in_o give_v forth_o his_o law_n for_o the_o design_n of_o his_o law_n be_v the_o holiness_n of_o his_o creature_n result_v from_o their_o conformity_n to_o the_o direction_n of_o such_o law_n if_o he_o shall_v so_o pardon_v their_o neglect_n of_o such_o conformity_n that_o be_v the_o neglect_v of_o their_o obedience_n as_o to_o make_v no_o provision_n for_o such_o obedience_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o by_o so_o do_v he_o will_v have_v no_o more_o regard_n to_o the_o directive_n part_v of_o his_o own_o law_n than_o they_o have_v have_v and_o so_o the_o manner_n of_o forgive_a the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n will_v unravel_v the_o main_a and_o principal_a design_n of_o make_v the_o law_n but_o we_o know_v very_o well_o that_o such_o a_o way_n of_o proceed_v be_v neither_o agreeable_a to_o wisdom_n nor_o to_o holiness_n and_o therefore_o much_o less_o to_o infinite_a holiness_n and_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o ever-ho_o and_o wise_a god_n give_v up_o his_o belove_a and_o only_o beget_v son_n to_o death_n for_o the_o accomplish_n the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n and_o if_o for_o the_o same_o purpose_n he_o punish_v all_o mankind_n not_o only_o with_o many_o misery_n in_o this_o world_n but_o also_o with_o death_n in_o their_o go_v out_o of_o it_o i_o say_v if_o he_o do_v all_o this_o which_o yet_o he_o himself_o tell_v we_o be_v his_o strange_a work_n that_o so_o the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n may_v not_o fall_v to_o the_o ground_n shall_v we_o think_v that_o he_o will_v do_v less_o or_o indeed_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o he_o will_v not_o rather_o do_v more_o to_o make_v good_a the_o main_a and_o grand_a and_o i_o may_v add_v the_o more_o natural_a design_n of_o his_o law_n which_o be_v the_o holiness_n of_o his_o creature_n no_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v return_v empty_a and_o that_o therefore_o his_o more_o solemn_a and_o express_a declaration_n and_o such_o be_v his_o law_n shall_v be_v sure_a to_o have_v their_o accomplishment_n and_o shall_v be_v fulfil_v in_o their_o due_a time_n notwithstanding_o the_o counter-endeavour_n of_o hell_n and_o wickedness_n for_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o any_o enemy_n to_o defeat_v the_o counsel_n or_o evacuate_v the_o main_a design_n of_o that_o law_n which_o proceed_v from_o eternal_a and_o essential_a holiness_n and_o which_o moreover_o be_v back_v with_o omnipotence_n we_o may_v therefore_o very_a well_o be_v satisfy_v that_o god_n have_v make_v provision_n for_o the_o performance_n and_o fulfil_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n 2._o and_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o such_o his_o provision_n do_v and_o must_v extend_v itself_o to_o man_n to_o who_o the_o law_n be_v give_v for_o it_o will_v be_v unreasonable_a to_o imagine_v the_o design_n of_o any_o law_n to_o be_v fulfil_v when_o such_o law_n be_v not_o obey_v by_o any_o of_o those_o for_o who_o it_o be_v proclaim_v and_o to_o who_o it_o be_v give_v and_o therefore_o because_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o man_n and_o require_v obedience_n from_o man_n we_o can_v say_v that_o the_o design_n of_o the_o law_n be_v fulfil_v unless_o man_n do_v obey_v it_o 3._o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o no_o man_n in_o this_o world_n except_o our_o saviour_n alone_o have_v obey_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n from_o the_o day_n of_o adam_n transgression_n to_o this_o very_a day_n and_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v moreover_o from_o so_o long_a a_o experience_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o from_o reason_n ground_v upon_o such_o experience_n but_o if_o both_o will_v not_o do_v we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v from_o scripture_n that_o no_o man_n ever_o will_n or_o shall_v pay_v a_o perfect_a obedience_n to_o such_o direction_n nay_o it_o be_v notorious_a that_o no_o man_n do_v so_o because_o we_o know_v that_o every_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v under_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n and_o we_o know_v that_o every_o man_n be_v so_o because_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o every_o man_n in_o his_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n shall_v undergo_v such_o curse_n that_o be_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v die_v now_o death_n be_v the_o penalty_n express_o assign_v by_o the_o law_n to_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o those_o who_o be_v not_o only_o liable_a to_o such_o penalty_n but_o who_o shall_v also_o certain_o undergo_v it_o be_v shall_v rise_v on_o the_o morrow-morning_n and_o put_v on_o his_o clothes_n for_o for_o the_o first_o he_o have_v the_o security_n of_o truth_n and_o omnipotence_n but_o for_o the_o last_o he_o have_v only_o the_o promise_n of_o his_o own_o presumption_n or_o at_o the_o very_o best_a but_o of_o his_o hope_n 4._o as_o the_o faithful_a shall_v in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n and_o resurrection_n obtain_v their_o own_o resurrection_n from_o death_n to_o life_n so_o the_o life_n which_o by_o such_o their_o resurrection_n they_o shall_v obtain_v shall_v be_v life_n eternal_a this_o be_v express_a scripture_n and_o a_o christian_a may_v therefore_o be_v satisfy_v in_o and_o assure_v of_o its_o truth_n for_o our_o saviour_n himself_o tell_v we_o as_o much_o when_o give_v a_o account_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n he_o close_v such_o account_n in_o the_o last_o verse_n of_o the_o twenty_o five_o chapter_n of_o st._n matthew_n with_o these_o word_n and_o these_o shall_v go_v into_o everlasting_a punishment_n and_o then_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v direct_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n but_o the_o righteous_a into_o life_n eternal_a and_o reason_n tell_v we_o that_o so_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v because_o where_o the_o cause_n of_o all_o death_n whatsoever_o be_v take_v away_o there_o the_o possibility_n of_o death_n must_v be_v take_v away_o too_o unless_o we_o shall_v imagine_v that_o death_n shall_v be_v bring_v upon_o a_o rational_a creature_n subject_n to_o law_n without_o any_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o death_n at_o all_o but_o as_o we_o have_v often_o lay_v it_o down_o and_o prove_v it_o already_o that_o can_v be_v suppose_v in_o the_o present_a case_n because_o the_o death_n we_o now_o speak_v of_o be_v suppose_v to_o come_v from_o god_n justice_n and_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n can_v either_o true_o or_o rational_o be_v suppose_v to_o inflict_v death_n there_o where_o there_o be_v no_o desert_n of_o it_o now_o we_o therefore_o know_v that_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n if_o therefore_o as_o we_o have_v already_o see_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v take_v away_o by_o the_o expiation_n and_o if_o upon_o their_o resurrection_n they_o obtain_v a_o indefectible_a holiness_n the_o inference_n will_v be_v that_o the_o cause_n of_o death_n sin_n will_v upon_o the_o first_o account_n be_v cancel_v and_o blot_v out_o and_o that_o upon_o the_o last_o account_n it_o can_v be_v renew_v or_o restore_v and_o that_o therefore_o upon_o both_o account_n in_o conjunction_n death_n the_o wage_n of_o sin_n can_v never_o more_o return_v and_o then_o when_o a_o life_n restore_v be_v secure_v from_o all_o possible_a return_n of_o death_n we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o such_o life_n so_o restore_v must_v be_v eternal_a and_o agreeable_a to_o what_o we_o now_o say_v st._n paul_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o three_o to_o the_o philippian_n the_o last_o verse_n that_o our_o saviour_n who_o we_o look_v for_o from_o heaven_n shall_v change_v our_o vile_a body_n that_o it_o may_v be_v fashion_v like_o unto_o his_o glorious_a transfiguration_n on_o the_o mount_n be_v a_o proleptick_a discovery_n of_o that_o glory_n with_o which_o his_o body_n be_v to_o be_v clothe_v upon_o his_o ascent_n into_o heaven_n the_o mount_n of_o god_n but_o be_v that_o as_o it_o will_v yet_o to_o our_o purpose_n if_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n shall_v be_v fashion_v like_o unto_o his_o glorious_a body_n than_o it_o will_v be_v no_o improbable_a conclusion_n that_o they_o shall_v with_o that_o glory_n put_v on_o a_o immortal_a frame_n and_o constitution_n and_o this_o conclusion_n will_v then_o advance_v from_o probable_a to_o certain_a when_o we_o know_v that_o the_o same_o apostle_n do_v acquaint_v we_o not_o only_o that_o our_o body_n which_o be_v sow_o in_o dishonour_n shall_v be_v raise_v in_o glory_n but_o over_o and_o above_o that_o this_o corruptible_fw-fr must_v put_v on_o incorruption_n and_o that_o this_o mortal_n must_v put_v on_o immortality_n much_o more_o may_v be_v offer_v on_o this_o subject_a but_o from_o what_o have_v be_v glance_v at_o we_o may_v now_o perceive_v that_o our_o body_n in_o imitation_n of_o our_o saviour_n body_n shall_v after_o its_o resurrection_n be_v endue_v with_o a_o glorious_a frame_n and_o a_o immortal_a constitution_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v do_v by_o his_o power_n as_o it_o shall_v in_o consideration_n of_o his_o merit_n that_o the_o power_n that_o shall_v do_v it_o be_v able_a to_o subdue_v all_o thing_n to_o itself_o that_o be_v be_v omnipotent_a and_o then_o where_o we_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o power_n of_o omnipotence_n to_o secure_v to_o we_o a_o eternal_a life_n there_o we_o can_v have_v no_o reason_n to_o doubt_v the_o eternity_n of_o such_o life_n the_o second_o thing_n shall_v now_o in_o order_n follow_v which_o be_v to_o show_v wherein_o the_o happiness_n of_o such_o eternal_a life_n do_v consist_v but_o before_o we_o speak_v to_o that_o i_o shall_v lay_v down_o two_o or_o three_o practical_a consideration_n which_o as_o they_o look_v back_o to_o what_o have_v be_v speak_v already_o so_o will_v be_v no_o improper_a introduction_n to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o shall_v be_v sensible_a of_o and_o grateful_a for_o that_o bless_a provision_n that_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n have_v make_v for_o our_o everlasting_a happiness_n and_o security_n and_o this_o we_o shall_v so_o much_o the_o rather_o be_v because_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v now_o understand_v that_o such_o provision_n do_v full_o answer_v to_o our_o high_a natural_a desire_n and_o inclination_n for_o our_o anxiety_n for_o our_o own_o welfare_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o among_o all_o the_o several_a appetite_n by_o which_o we_o pursue_v after_o our_o own_o happiness_n our_o desire_n of_o life_n do_v hold_v the_o first_o and_o chief_a place_n with_o we_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a because_o the_o loss_n of_o life_n must_v needs_o be_v follow_v by_o the_o loss_n of_o all_o other_o enjoyment_n whatsoever_o that_o can_v in_o any_o wise_a conduce_v to_o our_o happiness_n and_o as_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o our_o common_a sense_n that_o our_o grand_a and_o top_v appetite_n be_v that_o of_o life_n so_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o the_o same_o
