end_n answerable_a to_o the_o soul_n and_o that_o upon_o a_o double_a reason_n 1._o in_o the_o fruition_n the_o very_a enjoyment_n of_o a_o suitable_a good_a which_o i_o be_o sure_a must_v leave_v i_o either_o of_o acquittal_n or_o condemnation_n of_o obligation_n to_o that_o gild_n which_o arise_v upon_o the_o breach_n of_o that_o law_n loss_n of_o my_o end_n deformity_n and_o liableness_n to_o the_o sense_n move_v to_o their_o object_n the_o eye_n be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o see_v nor_o the_o ear_n with_o hear_v the_o natural_a appetite_n move_v to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o such_o a_o good_a as_o may_v fill_v and_o answer_v the_o want_n or_o exigence_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o have_v that_o appetite_n but_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o will_n and_o other_o faculty_n be_v considerable_a in_o two_o thing_n 1._o in_o the_o object_n general_o the_o object_n of_o the_o will_n be_v good_a and_o this_o distinguish_v it_o from_o the_o understanding_n who_o object_n be_v truth_n so_o that_o though_o the_o same_o thing_n be_v the_o object_n of_o both_o yet_o those_o faculty_n fasten_v upon_o it_o under_o several_a notion_n as_o the_o same_o body_n may_v be_v the_o object_n of_o my_o eye_n as_o colour_v and_o of_o my_o touch_n as_o hard_o and_o though_o good_a and_o goodness_n be_v a_o object_n of_o my_o understanding_n as_o a_o scibile_n whereby_o my_o understanding_n examine_v the_o truth_n the_o nature_n the_o circumstance_n the_o degree_n the_o suitableness_n of_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v a_o object_n of_o my_o will_n as_o appetible_a or_o desirable_a which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o union_n with_o that_o it_o conclude_v to_o be_v good_a and_o such_o a_o good_a have_v these_o quality_n 1._o it_o must_v be_v â—_o possible_a good_a and_o this_o have_v a_o double_a reason_n 1._o because_o this_o be_v a_o inclination_n put_v into_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o wise_a maker_n of_o the_o soul_n who_o never_o do_v any_o thing_n in_o vain_a and_o therefore_o never_o put_v any_o motion_n in_o any_o thing_n to_o such_o a_o thing_n which_o be_v unattainable_a ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la it_o be_v true_a de_fw-fr facto_fw-la it_o may_v fall_v out_o that_o good_a to_o which_o the_o soul_n be_v move_v may_v not_o be_v attain_v by_o reason_n of_o some_o extrinsical_a intervenience_n and_o yet_o ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la the_o good_a may_v be_v attainable_a 2._o because_o the_o will_n be_v a_o rational_a faculty_n and_o though_o of_o itself_o it_o move_v indeterminate_o to_o all_o good_a yet_o when_o it_o move_v to_o any_o determinate_a object_n it_o move_v upon_o the_o predecision_n of_o the_o rational_a understanding_n now_o it_o be_v a_o mere_a irrational_a act_n to_o move_v and_o impossible_a thing_n that_o it_o shall_v move_v to_o that_o which_o the_o understanding_n do_v not_o in_o some_o sort_n conclude_v possible_a to_o attain_v for_o the_o end_n of_o desire_n be_v union_n to_o the_o thing_n desire_v and_o be_v there_o not_o a_o possibility_n of_o union_n conclude_v in_o the_o understanding_n there_o will_v be_v a_o impossibility_n to_o will_v it_o or_o move_v after_o it_o 2._o it_o must_v be_v a_o suitable_a good_a to_o the_o exigence_n nature_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o subject_a that_o desire_v it_o 1._o to_o the_o exigence_n of_o the_o subject_a and_o this_o be_v evident_a in_o all_o motion_n of_o all_o thing_n they_o move_v to_o that_o which_o be_v apt_a to_o fill_v up_o and_o supply_v that_o vacuity_n which_o be_v in_o the_o thing_n desire_v it_o even_o in_o natural_a as_o well_o as_o rational_a appetite_n the_o hungry_a man_n his_o appetite_n be_v not_o for_o clothes_n but_o food_n 2._o according_a to_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o subject_a a_o sensitive_a appetite_n move_v to_o a_o sensitive_a good_a and_o a_o rational_a to_o a_o rational_a good_a and_o a_o immortal_a to_o a_o immortal_a goâ—â—_n and_o although_o man_n consist_v of_o several_a piece_n and_o therefore_o have_v several_a exigence_n and_o condition_n and_o consequent_o move_v to_o several_a end_n answerable_a thereunto_o and_o the_o will_n be_v carry_v to_o those_o end_n yet_o when_o the_o will_n be_v rational_o and_o regular_o move_v it_o move_v to_o the_o inferior_a end_n or_o good_a with_o subordination_n to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o great_a good_a and_o therefore_o rest_v not_o in_o they_o nor_o be_v satisfy_v with_o they_o nay_o though_o by_o reason_n of_o ignorance_n or_o other_o accident_n it_o mistake_v or_o know_v not_o or_o forget_v its_o supreme_a end_n it_o take_v no_o full_a satisfaction_n in_o those_o inferior_a good_n though_o it_o know_v not_o what_o to_o desire_v yet_o in_o all_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o these_o inferior_a desire_n it_o find_v that_o it_o have_v not_o what_o it_o shall_v and_o that_o breed_v discontent_a weariness_n and_o changeable_a pursuit_n of_o empty_a and_o unsatisfy_a pleasure_n and_o profit_n and_o contentment_n now_o the_o will_n be_v carry_v to_o its_o object_n by_o a_o double_a principle_n of_o motion_n 1._o original_a that_o great_a and_o wise_a god_n that_o have_v put_v in_o all_o thing_n inclination_n to_o their_o several_a end_n have_v put_v this_o will_n in_o man_n to_o move_v to_o his_o end_n wherein_o he_o have_v at_o once_o fulfil_v his_o own_o will_n he_o do_v it_o because_o it_o please_v he_o and_o lead_v man_n to_o his_o happiness_n for_o this_o we_o may_v most_o clear_o see_v in_o the_o frame_n of_o all_o thing_n his_o wisdom_n and_o his_o goodness_n be_v happiness_n viz._n that_o no_o temporal_a thing_n no_o carnal_a pleasure_n no_o contemplation_n of_o the_o creature_n be_v commensurate_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o duration_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o best_a part_n of_o man_n and_o consequent_o be_v not_o nor_o can_v be_v his_o end._n yet_o this_o though_o it_o take_v he_o off_o from_o the_o wrong_a way_n it_o set_v he_o not_o in_o the_o right_a way_n but_o leave_v he_o at_o a_o stand_n therefore_o 2._o the_o second_o impediment_n be_v the_o ignorance_n of_o the_o object_n of_o this_o happiness_n the_o want_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o only_a object_n of_o all_o our_o happiness_n the_o proof_n and_o demonstration_n whereof_o ensue_v by_o what_o have_v be_v before_o say_v it_o be_v evident_a 1._o that_o by_o the_o wise_a appointment_n of_o god_n every_o thing_n be_v ordain_v to_o a_o end_n to_o which_o it_o move_v 2._o that_o this_o end_n be_v such_o a_o good_a as_o be_v answerable_a to_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o creature_n which_o move_v to_o it_o a_o mere_a natural_a agent_n move_v to_o a_o natural_a end_n a_o sensitive_a to_o a_o sensible_a good._n 3._o that_o the_o high_a perfection_n of_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n consist_v in_o his_o reasonable_a soul_n by_o which_o he_o be_v a_o large_a degree_n above_o the_o sensitive_n therefore_o to_o find_v out_o wherein_o that_o good_a consist_v that_o be_v the_o end_n of_o man_n we_o must_v take_v measure_n of_o the_o soul_n wherein_o consist_v man_n perfection_n and_o when_o or_o where_o we_o can_v find_v a_o good_a commensurate_n to_o the_o soul_n there_o and_o there_o only_o can_v we_o fix_v man_n happiness_n 1._o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v immaterial_a and_o consequent_o that_o wherein_o consist_v happiness_n can_v be_v material_a this_o take_v off_o all_o sensible_a object_n as_o pleasure_n wealth_n outward_a pomp_n nay_o all_o the_o visible_a creature_n from_o be_v the_o object_n of_o man_n felicity_n it_o be_v as_o impossible_a to_o satisfy_v a_o spirit_n with_o these_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v to_o feed_v a_o body_n with_o a_o spirit_n they_o hold_v not_o a_o proportion_n or_o conformity_n one_o to_o another_o and_o from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o in_o that_o small_a slender_a use_n that_o the_o soul_n make_v of_o the_o creature_n as_o it_o can_v enter_v into_o the_o soul_n till_o it_o be_v spiritualise_v in_o the_o species_n which_o be_v refine_v more_o and_o more_o the_o near_o they_o come_v to_o the_o soul_n first_o in_o the_o organ_n then_o in_o the_o fantasy_n so_o neither_o can_v the_o soul_n make_v use_v of_o they_o to_o any_o purpose_n be_v receive_v till_o by_o abstraction_n it_o have_v make_v they_o of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o herself_o and_o from_o this_o disproportion_n between_o the_o soul_n and_o those_o external_a enjoyment_n do_v arise_v that_o unsatisfactoriness_n that_o come_v by_o they_o to_o the_o soul_n for_o though_o they_o be_v useful_a to_o the_o body_n and_o the_o outward_a man_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v desirable_a by_o the_o soul_n itself_o in_o order_n to_o that_o end_n yet_o they_o reach_v not_o so_o far_o as_o the_o soul_n their_o end_n fall_v short_a of_o it_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n rest_v not_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o they_o nay_o though_o it_o see_v not_o its_o proper_a end_n yet_o it_o find_v a_o nauseum_fw-la in_o the_o excess_n of_o these_o and_o therefore_o be_v restless_a and_o move_v from_o one_o pleasure_n to_o another_o and_o this_o be_v likewise_o the_o reason_n why_o every_o outward_a pleasure_n be_v great_a in_o the_o expectation_n than_o in_o the_o fruition_n because_o the_o imagination_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o creature_n that_o the_o soul_n form_n can_v bring_v it_o near_o to_o the_o soul_n than_o the_o creature_n when_o it_o be_v enjoy_v can_v come_v and_o this_o imagination_n as_o it_o do_v delude_v the_o soul_n so_o it_o likewise_o take_v off_o much_o of_o that_o content_a which_o may_v be_v lawful_o find_v and_o use_v in_o the_o creature_n it_o make_v the_o pursuit_n too_o eager_a and_o fruition_n flat_a in_o that_o it_o be_v over_o expect_v 2._o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v consequent_o immortal_a and_o its_o felicity_n can_v therefore_o consist_v in_o that_o which_o can_v be_v co-extended_n with_o it_o be_v there_o a_o good_a imaginable_a that_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n hold_v proportion_n with_o the_o value_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o be_v perishable_a it_o be_v impossible_a that_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o good_a can_v the_o felicity_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v and_o that_o upon_o these_o reason_n 1._o because_o the_o duration_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o divisible_a and_o successive_a take_v it_o apart_o from_o the_o body_n a_o temporary_a felicity_n will_v be_v no_o felicity_n it_o be_v true_a we_o measure_v out_o our_o time_n by_o parcel_n as_o year_n and_o week_n and_o day_n and_o hour_n and_o minute_n but_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o so_o for_o though_o the_o duration_n thereof_o be_v not_o simple_o indivisible_a as_o in_o the_o duration_n of_o eternity_n yet_o it_o be_v far_o more_o swift_a than_o we_o and_o so_o will_v be_v almost_o insensible_a of_o a_o temporary_a good_a though_o of_o long_a continuance_n 2._o because_o the_o determination_n of_o that_o good_a will_v consequent_o determine_v its_o felicity_n so_o it_o can_v be_v no_o perfect_a happiness_n 3._o the_o very_a enjoyment_n of_o a_o most_o perfect_a good_a that_o the_o soul_n look_v upon_o as_o determinable_a be_v in_o that_o very_a enjoyment_n mingle_v with_o a_o discontent_n grief_n and_o fear_v which_o be_v abundant_o sufficient_a to_o rob_v the_o soul_n of_o felicity_n in_o that_o very_a enjoyment_n when_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v take_v up_o with_o such_o sad_a preapprehension_n and_o preexpectation_n as_o these_o i_o now_o enjoy_v a_o good_a answerable_a to_o my_o desire_n and_o that_o fill_v up_o every_o the_o least_o vacuity_n and_o crave_v of_o my_o will_n yet_o i_o foresee_v that_o it_o be_v not_o last_v a_o time_n must_v come_v when_o i_o must_v lose_v it_o and_o it_o will_v die_v under_o my_o hand_n and_o yet_o my_o immortal_a be_v shall_v have_v continuance_n to_o all_o eternity_n when_o my_o present_a enjoyment_n shall_v serve_v but_o to_o increase_v my_o emptiness_n and_o misery_n with_o the_o sense_n of_o what_o i_o have_v and_o lose_v this_o handwriting_n upon_o the_o wall_n be_v enough_o to_o turn_v the_o high_a enjoyment_n that_o be_v but_o temporary_a into_o bitterness_n in_o the_o very_a enjoyment_n much_o more_o those_o vain_a and_o thin_a pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n that_o never_o come_v near_o the_o soul_n but_o in_o a_o deceitful_a imagination_n so_o then_o to_o the_o constitution_n of_o true_a happiness_n for_o a_o immortal_a substance_n there_o be_v re-required_n a_o immortal_a good._n 3._o it_o must_v be_v a_o good_a divide_v in_o its_o own_o nature_n from_o the_o soul._n there_o can_v nothing_o be_v the_o end_n and_o supreme_a good_a to_o itself_o but_o the_o first_o cause_n which_o alone_o be_v self-sufficient_a and_o that_o be_v manifest_a in_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o if_o itself_o be_v the_o end_n of_o itself_o it_o have_v its_o end_n and_o consequent_o will_v cease_v to_o move_v but_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o a_o pure_a act_n but_o receptive_a of_o something_o distinct_a from_o itself_o to_o which_o it_o move_v as_o to_o its_o end_n and_o perfection_n 4._o it_o must_v be_v a_o true_a and_o real_a good_a for_o since_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v in_o these_o two_o active_a faculty_n the_o understanding_n who_o object_n be_v truth_n and_o the_o will_n and_o the_o principal_a use_n of_o every_o faculty_n be_v in_o order_n to_o the_o supreme_a end_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v his_o summum_fw-la bonum_fw-la it_o be_v necessary_a that_o that_o which_o be_v pursue_v by_o the_o will_n as_o good_a shall_v likewise_o be_v entertain_v by_o the_o understanding_n as_o true_a and_o the_o high_a perfection_n of_o the_o understanding_n be_v about_o the_o truth_n of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o supreme_a good_a because_o that_o truth_n be_v the_o supreme_a truth_n the_o truth_n of_o this_o goodness_n stand_v in_o opposition_n 1_o to_o that_o which_o seem_v to_o be_v good_a and_o be_v not_o at_o all_o such_o be_v mere_o imaginary_a and_o fantastical_a good_n when_o the_o soul_n work_v a_o imaginary_a good_a and_o then_o work_v itself_o into_o the_o belief_n of_o it_o 2._o to_o that_o which_o have_v a_o be_v seem_v to_o be_v good_a and_o be_v not_o 3._o to_o that_o which_o though_o it_o be_v good_a seem_v to_o be_v the_o supreme_a good_a but_o be_v not_o it_o must_v therefore_o be_v a_o intellectual_a real_a good._n 5._o it_o must_v
of_o his_o own_o nature_n yet_o wonderful_o manage_v they_o to_o end_n and_o event_n which_o they_o dream_v not_o of_o who_o while_o the_o several_a contrary_a quality_n that_o he_o have_v plant_v in_o body_n can_v be_v destructive_a one_o of_o another_o he_o have_v so_o fence_v their_o extremity_n one_o from_o another_o that_o one_o destroy_v not_o another_o and_o yet_o so_o temper_n and_o allay_v they_o that_o they_o concur_v in_o the_o constitution_n of_o other_o thing_n there_o we_o find_v the_o various_a and_o most_o contingent_a motion_n of_o the_o creature_n marshal_v by_o a_o wise_a providence_n to_o the_o production_n of_o those_o event_n that_o the_o secret_a counsel_n of_o the_o great_a god_n have_v appoint_v so_o that_o while_o with_o one_o eye_n we_o see_v seem_o philosopher_n to_o gain_v credit_n to_o their_o law_n and_o dictate_v dare_v sometime_o to_o patronize_v they_o upon_o heaven_n but_o in_o they_o a_o considerate_a man_n may_v clear_o find_v those_o law_n to_o have_v arisen_a from_o a_o mere_a observation_n of_o the_o visible_a inconvenience_n to_o public_a society_n and_o a_o prudential_a application_n of_o such_o rule_n as_o may_v meet_v with_o those_o inconvenience_n the_o original_n of_o they_o be_v attribute_v to_o divine_a institution_n to_o gain_v reputation_n and_o opinion_n in_o the_o vulgar_a but_o in_o truth_n all_o or_o at_o least_o those_o that_o be_v the_o best_a and_o best_a ground_v be_v as_o natural_o deducible_a from_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o convenience_n and_o inconvenience_n of_o a_o civil_a society_n as_o the_o conclusion_n of_o geometry_n or_o arithmetic_n be_v ground_v upon_o their_o principle_n and_o therefore_o for_o the_o most_o part_n humane_a law_n do_v in_o substance_n agree_v in_o the_o point_n consist_v in_o the_o relation_n between_o man_n and_o man_n as_o be_v more_o obvious_a and_o plain_a and_o do_v for_o the_o most_o part_n disagree_v and_o differ_v in_o those_o point_n that_o concern_v religion_n as_o be_v more_o distant_a and_o difficult_a now_o iâ—_n it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o distance_n and_o remoteness_n of_o those_o suppose_a truth_n from_o natural_a reason_n or_o discovery_n â—enders_v the_o scripture_n the_o more_o incredible_a or_o at_o best_o not_o credible_a thereby_o to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o upon_o the_o same_o reason_n any_o improbable_a relation_n may_v be_v obtrude_v upon_o we_o as_o a_o divine_a truth_n because_o not_o to_o be_v else_o imagine_v by_o humane_a reason_n in_o answer_n to_o this_o we_o must_v premise_v two_o thing_n 1._o that_o it_o be_v possible_a there_o may_v be_v some_o intelligible_a object_n and_o truth_n in_o the_o world_n that_o never_o any_o man_n do_v nor_o without_o the_o help_n of_o a_o foreign_a discovery_n never_o can_v find_v out_o if_o a_o man_n be_v suppose_v to_o be_v bear_v without_o the_o faculty_n of_o see_v it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o he_o to_o discover_v that_o quality_n or_o motion_n of_o a_o natural_a body_n which_o we_o call_v light_n or_o colour_n nay_o scarce_o to_o understand_v it_o though_o a_o very_a rational_a discourse_n be_v make_v concern_v it_o and_o what_o man_n can_v conclude_v but_o that_o there_o may_v be_v and_o be_v divers_a quality_n or_o motion_n of_o natural_a body_n which_o be_v without_o the_o verge_n of_o any_o of_o our_o sense_n and_o consequent_o never_o fall_v into_o humane_a discovery_n we_o clear_o admit_v spirit_n and_o we_o have_v notion_n of_o their_o motion_n locality_n and_o substance_n yet_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n by_o natural_a indagation_n without_o the_o help_n of_o some_o extrinsical_a relation_n to_o find_v it_o out_o we_o may_v therefore_o conclude_v that_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a there_o may_v be_v so_o it_o be_v probable_a there_o be_v some_o intelligible_a object_n and_o truth_n which_o we_o can_v discover_v without_o a_o extrinsical_a help_v or_o discovery_n 2._o that_o of_o necessity_n many_o of_o those_o truth_n contain_v in_o the_o scripture_n especial_o concern_v the_o deity_n the_o will_n of_o god_n the_o fall_n of_o man_n and_o the_o mean_n of_o his_o restauration_n be_v thing_n that_o can_v be_v collect_v or_o conclude_v by_o any_o natural_a reason_n partly_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o sublimity_n of_o their_o nature_n be_v beyond_o the_o verge_n of_o sense_n and_o natural_a discourse_n partly_o because_o they_o be_v emanation_n of_o a_o free_a agent_n whereof_o no_o other_o reason_n can_v be_v give_v but_o the_o will_n of_o the_o agent_n and_o consequent_o not_o deducible_a into_o knowledge_n or_o assent_n by_o rational_a conclusion_n 3._o that_o though_o the_o discovery_n of_o or_o assent_v unto_o those_o truth_n can_v be_v elicit_v by_o natural_a reason_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o contrary_a to_o natural_a reason_n but_o may_v be_v truth_n notwithstanding_o any_o reason_n that_o can_v be_v give_v against_o they_o it_o be_v true_a 1._o no_o other_o book_n in_o the_o world_n do_v discover_v the_o true_a ground_n of_o the_o obligation_n unto_o moral_a precept_n the_o moral_a philosopher_n persuade_v i_o to_o temperance_n to_o fancy_n and_o contain_v no_o reality_n or_o the_o cohortion_n of_o the_o law_n which_o if_o i_o can_v avoid_v with_o secrecy_n or_o force_n i_o escape_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o persuasion_n or_o that_o congruity_n that_o sound_v moral_a precept_n hold_v with_o prudence_n and_o the_o permanent_a enjoyment_n of_o good_a here_o for_o it_o be_v a_o most_o certain_a truth_n as_o appear_v before_o that_o the_o due_a observation_n of_o the_o rule_n of_o right_a reason_n have_v a_o most_o clear_a connexion_n with_o happiness_n in_o this_o life_n and_o that_o the_o violation_n of_o these_o precept_n of_o nature_n do_v necessary_o introduce_v a_o loss_n of_o temporal_a felicity_n these_o be_v the_o high_a motive_n of_o obedience_n to_o these_o humane_a document_n but_o let_v we_o look_v upon_o the_o motive_n that_o the_o very_a same_o precept_n be_v enforce_v with_o in_o this_o book_n of_o god_n we_o shall_v find_v they_o of_o a_o high_a constitution_n we_o be_v there_o show_v they_o be_v command_v by_o that_o god_n to_o who_o we_o owe_v our_o be_v and_o therefore_o may_v just_o challenge_v our_o obedience_n as_o his_o tribute_n by_o that_o god_n from_o who_o we_o daily_o receive_v our_o preservation_n and_o mercy_n and_o therefore_o may_v just_o expert_a the_o return_n of_o our_o love_n and_o thankfulness_n in_o the_o observance_n of_o his_o will_n by_o that_o god_n that_o have_v annex_v a_o sanction_n to_o the_o breach_n of_o his_o law_n which_o he_o both_o can_v and_o will_v inflict_v this_o may_v startle_v our_o fear_n by_o that_o god_n that_o have_v propound_v and_o promise_v a_o reward_n to_o our_o obedience_n both_o in_o this_o life_n and_o a_o future_a which_o he_o will_v certain_o confer_v this_o do_v quicken_v our_o hope_n these_o and_o the_o like_a ground_n and_o motive_n of_o obedience_n fall_v upon_o the_o most_o active_a affection_n with_o the_o most_o powerful_a and_o rational_a persuasion_n and_o be_v able_a to_o conquer_v more_o difficulty_n in_o the_o obedience_n of_o these_o very_a precept_n that_o be_v material_o the_o same_o than_o all_o those_o faint_a and_o thin_a persuasion_n that_o the_o wise_a of_o man_n can_v ever_o teach_v the_o great_a god_n that_o know_v the_o frame_n of_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n have_v not_o only_o give_v rational_a law_n to_o lead_v he_o to_o his_o great_a end_n and_o rational_a mean_n to_o draw_v out_o his_o obedience_n by_o appoint_v reward_n or_o punishment_n of_o his_o obedience_n or_o disobedience_n but_o also_o by_o the_o same_o wisdom_n of_o he_o plant_v in_o he_o affection_n which_o may_v be_v proper_a to_o receive_v the_o impression_n of_o those_o reward_n and_o punishment_n and_o by_o this_o word_n of_o he_o convey_v those_o notion_n into_o his_o heart_n which_o stick_v upon_o those_o active_a affection_n of_o love_n hope_v and_o fear_v in_o the_o most_o exact_a full_a and_o adequate_a manner_n this_o be_v therefore_o none_o else_o but_o the_o finger_n of_o god._n and_o this_o be_v not_o only_o evince_v by_o the_o threaten_n and_o promise_n in_o this_o book_n but_o by_o the_o historical_a part_n of_o it_o apply_v the_o truth_n of_o both_o wherein_o we_o may_v see_v unriddle_v most_o of_o the_o variety_n of_o event_n that_o fall_v upon_o a_o people_n or_o person_n especial_o know_v god_n which_o without_o this_o light_n seem_v to_o be_v confuse_v and_o mere_o contingent_a israel_n sin_n israel_n be_v punish_v she_o repent_v and_o be_v deliver_v we_o be_v show_v by_o the_o very_a historical_a passage_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n that_o when_o we_o be_v punish_v we_o eat_v but_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o own_o way_n 3._o as_o the_o eminence_n of_o the_o scripture_n above_o other_o learning_n and_o consequent_o its_o original_a be_v discover_v in_o the_o two_o former_a so_o in_o this_o that_o it_o do_v distinct_o and_o clear_o evidence_n and_o set_v forth_o those_o moral_a precept_n which_o be_v confuse_o and_o imperfect_o only_o deliver_v by_o the_o best_a of_o humane_a writer_n especial_o in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n all_o agree_v god_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v but_o when_o they_o come_v to_o show_v how_o then_o they_o be_v to_o seek_v for_o indeed_o as_o it_o be_v folly_n for_o any_o one_o to_o think_v that_o there_o can_v be_v any_o worship_n of_o god_n acceptable_a but_o what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o will_n so_o it_o be_v vain_a to_o think_v that_o this_o will_n of_o he_o can_v be_v discover_v by_o any_o but_o himself_o and_o from_o the_o want_n of_o this_o grow_v idolatry_n and_o other_o vanity_n in_o worship_n 4_o the_o original_n of_o the_o scripture_n be_v discover_v in_o this_o that_o it_o do_v contain_v in_o it_o precept_n of_o a_o high_a constitution_n and_o therefore_o of_o a_o high_a pedigree_n than_o the_o best_a of_o all_o humane_a learning_n ever_o do_v arrive_v unto_o such_o as_o be_v the_o cleanse_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o thought_n from_o all_o sin_n that_o the_o formality_n of_o sin_n consist_v in_o the_o will_n even_o before_o it_o express_v itself_o in_o act_n that_o the_o outward_a conformity_n of_o the_o act_n to_o virtue_n without_o the_o internal_a absolute_a good._n and_o as_o every_o sin_n be_v a_o aversion_n from_o the_o chief_a good_a either_o to_o that_o which_o be_v a_o lesser_a or_o no_o good_a so_o it_o be_v impossible_a but_o the_o be_v please_v as_o the_o sin_n and_o corruption_n of_o mankind_n do_v make_v breach_n into_o this_o rule_n of_o righteousness_n and_o corrupt_v the_o manner_n of_o man_n so_o he_o be_v please_v in_o the_o way_n of_o his_o providence_n to_o repair_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n in_o all_o age_n raise_v up_o prophet_n and_o preacher_n of_o righteousness_n as_o noah_n be_v to_o the_o old_a world_n
