consideration_n upon_o the_o present_a state_n of_o the_o affair_n of_o this_o kingdom_n in_o relation_n to_o the_o three_o several_a petition_n which_o have_v late_o be_v in_o agitation_n in_o the_o honourable_a city_n of_o london_n and_o a_o project_n for_o a_o four_o petition_n tend_v to_o a_o speedy_a accommodation_n of_o the_o present_a unhappy_a difference_n between_o his_o majesty_n and_o the_o parliament_n write_a upon_o the_o peruse_n of_o the_o special_a passage_n of_o the_o two_o week_n from_o the_o 29_o of_o november_n to_o the_o 13_o of_o december_n 1642._o and_o dedicate_v to_o the_o lord_n maior_n and_o alderman_n of_o the_o say_a city_n by_o a_o countryman_n a_o well-willer_n of_o the_o city_n and_o a_o lover_n of_o truth_n and_o peace_n philip_n 4.5_o let_v your_o moderation_n be_v know_v to_o all_o man_n the_o lord_n be_v at_o hand_n job_n 13.7_o will_v you_o speak_v wicked_o for_o god_n and_o talk_v deceitful_o for_o he_o 2_o cor._n 13.11_o be_v perfect_a be_v of_o good_a comfort_n be_v of_o one_o mind_n live_v in_o peace_n and_o the_o god_n of_o love_n and_o of_o peace_n shall_v be_v with_o you_o london_n print_v anno_fw-la 1642._o he_o have_v not_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o englishman_n or_o of_o a_o christian_a in_o his_o breast_n who_o bowel_n do_v not_o roll_v within_o he_o when_o he_o consider_v the_o miserable_a distraction_n of_o this_o divide_a kingdom_n threaten_v a_o german_a desolation_n thereof_o and_o of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n therein_o i_o have_v therefore_o much_o wonder_v to_o see_v so_o many_o religious_a man_n and_o good_a patriot_n more_o ready_a to_o bring_v fuel_n and_o breath_n to_o the_o kindle_v and_o increase_n than_o tear_n to_o the_o quench_n or_o hand_n to_o the_o put_v out_o of_o that_o fire_n which_o in_o a_o short_a time_n have_v already_o seize_v on_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o if_o it_o burn_v a_o while_n after_o the_o rate_n it_o have_v begin_v be_v like_o soon_o to_o make_v we_o the_o scorn_n as_o we_o have_v long_o be_v the_o envy_n of_o all_o our_o neighbour_n but_o i_o be_v altogether_o astonish_v to_o find_v the_o sheet_n of_o the_o special_a passage_n of_o the_o other_o week_n to_o begin_v with_o these_o word_n this_o week_n have_v produce_v matter_n much_o conduce_v to_o the_o peace_n and_o safety_n of_o the_o kingdom_n a_o petition_n against_o a_o accommodation_n unless_o the_o king_n come_v to_o the_o parliament_n from_o divers_a well-affected_a citizen_n of_o london_n and_o yet_o i_o will_v not_o be_v think_v to_o differ_v from_o man_n so_o well-affected_a in_o this_o judgement_n that_o the_o king_n return_v to_o that_o his_o great_a and_o most_o faithful_a counsel_n be_v not_o the_o most_o sure_a and_o speedy_a way_n to_o recover_v a_o right_a understanding_n between_o his_o majesty_n and_o his_o parliament_n and_o that_o happiness_n of_o a_o well_o establish_v peace_n throughout_o the_o whole_a kingdom_n which_o no_o man_n without_o breach_n of_o charity_n can_v suspect_v his_o majesty_n do_v not_o most_o sincere_o affect_v and_o so_o much_o more_o than_o any_o one_o of_o his_o subject_n as_o his_o interest_n therein_o be_v great_a but_o because_o i_o conceive_v it_o as_o hard_o to_o induce_v his_o majesty_n thereunto_o as_o to_o persuade_v the_o parliament_n to_o adjourn_v to_o another_o place_n till_o those_o vehement_a though_o groundless_a jealousy_n which_o either_o of_o they_o have_v of_o each_o other_o be_v extinguish_v or_o at_o least_o allay_v i_o can_v therefore_o by_o no_o mean_n approve_v of_o the_o counsel_n for_o good_a be_v as_o i_o doubt_v impracticable_a though_o i_o believe_v as_o much_o as_o another_o of_o the_o good_a intention_n of_o the_o person_n that_o give_v it_o for_o if_o there_o be_v cause_n to_o fear_v that_o the_o king_n will_v never_o be_v draw_v to_o agree_v to_o any_o reasonable_a term_n of_o accommodation_n while_o his_o majesty_n be_v imprison_v by_o the_o cavalier_n and_o encircle_v by_o those_o wicked_a counsellor_n who_o by_o this_o writer_n be_v presume_v to_o be_v about_o he_o and_o to_o have_v power_n to_o seduce_v he_o can_v it_o be_v reasonable_o think_v that_o the_o cavalier_n will_v be_v less_o vigilant_a to_o keep_v his_o majesty_n from_o make_v a_o escape_n or_o those_o counsellor_n to_o charm_v he_o from_o stir_v from_o they_o though_o it_o be_v for_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o kingdom_n till_o their_o own_o be_v first_o make_v with_o the_o parliament_n but_o the_o petitioner_n advice_n be_v to_o have_v those_o cavalier_n and_o councillor_n pursue_v and_o his_o majesty_n free_v from_o they_o by_o that_o mean_n perhaps_o this_o may_v prove_v a_o thing_n easy_a to_o say_v then_o to_o do_v as_o experience_n have_v show_v let_v we_o not_o so_o soon_o forget_v what_o we_o have_v late_o learn_v at_o our_o great_a charge_n his_o majesty_n have_v erect_v his_o standard_n at_o nottingham_n to_o which_o there_o be_v no_o such_o mighty_a nor_o hasty_a confluence_n as_o be_v expect_v the_o cavalier_n which_o term_n i_o will_v not_o consent_v to_o abuse_v if_o it_o be_v not_o at_o the_o present_a impossible_a to_o reduce_v it_o to_o the_o right_a use_n again_o have_v attempt_v warwick_n and_o coventry_n and_o fail_v in_o both_o they_o have_v march_v against_o the_o force_n of_o the_o parliament_n near_o southam_n in_o no_o very_a unequal_a strength_n though_o the_o number_n be_v somewhat_o unequal_a and_o have_v fall_v off_o in_o a_o disorderly_a retreat_n without_o strike_v stroke_n this_o be_v likely_a to_o give_v so_o much_o discouragement_n to_o the_o king_n party_n not_o too_o forward_o to_o show_v itself_o fore_o that_o it_o be_v think_v a_o matter_n of_o much_o difficulty_n if_o not_o impossibility_n for_o his_o majesty_n to_o raise_v his_o force_n than_o very_o weak_a to_o a_o complete_a army_n in_o time_n to_o oppose_v that_o of_o the_o parliament_n then_o ready_a to_o march_v and_o abundant_o provide_v of_o all_o necessary_n for_o the_o war._n hereupon_o the_o parliament_n reject_v a_o reiterated_a offer_n of_o his_o majesty_n to_o treat_v and_o with_o high_a wisdom_n as_o then_o in_o hope_n the_o king_n may_v have_v be_v necessitate_v to_o have_v abandon_v certain_a delinquent_n or_o they_o the_o kingdom_n beside_o the_o weighty_a reason_n express_v in_o their_o answer_n but_o whether_o by_o god_n blessing_n upon_o the_o sincerity_n of_o his_o majesty_n protestation_n most_o solemn_o renew_v near_o wellington_n with_o a_o necessary_a exception_n thereunto_o or_o by_o the_o industry_n and_o courage_n of_o some_o person_n active_a enough_o before_o but_o then_o quicken_v by_o their_o desperate_a condition_n or_o by_o what_o other_o more_o secret_a providence_n or_o mean_n i_o know_v not_o sure_o i_o be_o that_o in_o a_o very_a short_a space_n of_o time_n the_o scale_n be_v so_o far_o turn_v even_o beyond_o the_o expectation_n of_o cavalier_n and_o counsellor_n as_o may_v be_v show_v under_o their_o hand_n that_o his_o majesty_n army_n give_v battle_n to_o that_o of_o the_o parliament_n fight_v it_o so_o well_o that_o it_o be_v not_o yet_o agree_v who_o have_v the_o victory_n but_o if_o the_o cavalier_n be_v defeat_v they_o march_v within_o seven_o mile_n of_o the_o parliament_n after_o their_o defeat_n there_o stand_v in_o battle_n again_o and_o thence_o make_v one_o of_o the_o most_o resolute_a if_o not_o the_o most_o soldierly_a retreat_n have_v be_v hear_v of_o in_o our_o age_n so_o improsperous_a be_v the_o excess_n of_o confidence_n in_o the_o success_n of_o war_n as_o well_o as_o of_o duel_n and_o let_v we_o therefore_o beware_v of_o stumble_v again_o at_o that_o stone_n as_o the_o petitioner_n may_v have_v observe_v the_o parliament_n to_o be_v why_o his_o majesty_n have_v no_o money_n and_o without_o the_o strength_n of_o that_o sinew_n of_o war_n his_o cavalier_n as_o gallant_a as_o they_o be_v can_v have_v but_o paralitique_a arms._n a_o vain_a conceit_n that_o silver_n and_o gold_n shall_v not_o soon_o be_v bring_v under_o the_o power_n of_o brass_n and_o iron_n or_o that_o he_o that_o be_v grow_v well-nigh_o master_n of_o the_o field_n shall_v not_o in_o humane_a reason_n soon_o become_v master_n of_o this_o whole_a kingdom_n for_o want_n of_o money_n or_o ammunition_n i_o forbear_v to_o say_v by_o what_o mean_n lest_o i_o shall_v be_v think_v to_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o give_v crafty_a counsel_n to_o the_o wicked_a counsellor_n of_o which_o they_o have_v no_o need_n nor_o i_o any_o disposition_n if_o i_o have_v ability_n to_o help_v they_o and_o beside_o may_v it_o not_o be_v fear_v that_o the_o parliament_n may_v ere_o long_o have_v no_o superfluity_n of_o that_o all-working_a engine_n when_o the_o petitioner_n who_o have_v bear_v the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o charge_n of_o the_o war_n and_o who_o purse_n have_v be_v so_o open_a hitherto_o upon_o
