ghost_n convince_v they_o of_o this_o sin_n above_o all_o their_o other_o sin_n that_o they_o have_v not_o believe_v on_o jesus_n christ_n do_v not_o therefore_o censure_v any_o such_o as_o to_o say_v there_o be_v no_o likelihood_n that_o they_o shall_v have_v fellowship_n with_o christ_n for_o if_o the_o lord_n make_v they_o to_o fall_v down_o before_o he_o and_o to_o yield_v up_o their_o spirit_n the_o like_a be_v convey_v in_o a_o commandment_n the_o lord_n undertake_v to_o work_v that_o which_o he_o so_o command_v but_o now_o it_o be_v question_v whether_o the_o promise_v wherein_o the_o lord_n give_v himself_o be_v absolute_a or_o conditional_a faith_n to_o receive_v christ_n be_v ever_o upon_o a_o absolute_a promise_n if_o you_o will_v say_v it_o be_v a_o promise_n to_o a_o condition_n what_o kind_n of_o condition_n be_v it_o there_o be_v no_o condition_n before_o faith_n but_o a_o conditon_n of_o misery_n a_o lose_a condition_n or_o if_o a_o gracious_a condition_n it_o be_v a_o condition_n subsequent_a not_o preaexistent_a no_o condition_n before_o it_o whereby_o a_o man_n can_v close_v with_o jesus_n christ_n and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o condition_n after_o faith_n unto_o which_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v than_o faith_n be_v there_o before_o and_o whatsoever_o follow_v conversion_n be_v no_o ground_n of_o faith_n but_o a_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o it_o we_o may_v not_o stumble_v in_o our_o expression_n in_o any_o conference_n about_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o work_n quest_n 4._o now_o forasmuch_o as_o you_o hear_v of_o a_o sanctification_n under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n it_o do_v imply_v that_o there_o be_v a_o sanctification_n that_o be_v but_o transitory_a and_o not_o everlasting_a nor_o immortal_a whether_o then_o may_v a_o man_n evidence_n his_o union_n with_o christ_n by_o his_o sanctification_n answ_n i_o answer_v in_o four_o proposition_n that_o i_o may_v not_o leave_v any_o occasion_n of_o scruple_n or_o difference_n about_o what_o be_v hold_v forth_o in_o our_o congregation_n as_o be_v that_o which_o do_v yield_v as_o much_o agitation_n as_o any_o other_o doctrine_n that_o be_v teach_v among_o we_o let_v i_o therefore_o short_o and_o plain_o discover_v it_o and_o let_v it_o be_v so_o far_o receive_v as_o we_o see_v the_o life_n and_o presence_n and_o truth_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n reveal_v the_o doctrine_n of_o free_a grace_n according_a to_o the_o scripture_n prop._n 1._o that_o a_o sanctification_n which_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n may_v produce_v that_o be_v to_o say_v such_o a_o sanctification_n as_o may_v be_v find_v in_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v no_o evidence_n or_o witness_n of_o our_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o i_o suppose_v there_o be_v no_o difference_n there_o but_o though_o there_o be_v no_o difference_n in_o man_n judgement_n in_o this_o yet_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n for_o christian_n to_o abuse_v their_o evidence_n upon_o this_o very_a ground_n and_o as_o much_o upon_o this_o ground_n as_o upon_o any_o for_o when_o christian_n come_v to_o be_v real_o wrought_v upon_o and_o find_v themselves_o discourage_v from_o sin_n and_o so_o reform_v their_o life_n and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o obey_v the_o word_n and_o find_v comfort_n therein_o and_o great_a consolation_n many_o time_n in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o christian_n do_v much_o differ_v upon_o the_o point_n yet_o i_o do_v not_o know_v any_o of_o all_o the_o teacher_n in_o the_o country_n that_o withdraw_v their_o consent_n from_o this_o doctrine_n that_o such_o sanctification_n as_o be_v wrought_v in_o hypocrite_n though_o it_o may_v reach_v to_o great_a improvement_n yet_o it_o be_v no_o evidence_n of_o justification_n at_o all_o and_o it_o have_v be_v handle_v in_o another_o congregation_n and_o i_o think_v not_o without_o weight_n of_o truth_n that_o to_o distinguish_v in_o man_n between_o that_o sanctification_n which_o flow_v from_o the_o law_n and_o that_o which_o be_v of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o matter_n so_o narrow_a that_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n have_v much_o ado_n to_o discern_v who_o differ_v a_o work_n fit_a for_o angel_n to_o cut_v the_o scantling_n in_o it_o then_o for_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n though_o indeed_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n of_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o now_o though_o this_o do_v not_o tend_v to_o heal_v any_o difference_n in_o judgement_n yet_o it_o be_v useful_a to_o heal_v a_o misprision_n of_o sanctification_n that_o may_v be_v find_v in_o all_o hypocrite_n of_o this_o country_n and_o elsewhere_o three_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v attain_v unto_o in_o all_o sanctification_n 1_o from_o what_o root_n it_o spring_v 2_o by_o what_o rule_v it_o be_v guide_v 3_o at_o what_o end_v it_o aim_v and_o common_o under_o one_o or_o other_o of_o these_o three_o be_v put_v all_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o one_o sanctification_n and_o the_o other_o i_o speak_v it_o that_o it_o may_v be_v search_v and_o god_n be_v my_o witness_n not_o to_o unsettle_v the_o well-grounded_n comfort_n of_o any_o soul_n but_o if_o any_o have_v build_v upon_o a_o unsafe_a ground_n or_o have_v build_v hay_n or_o stubble_n better_o it_o be_v to_o know_v it_o at_o first_o whilst_o there_o be_v hope_n in_o israel_n than_o when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o in_o those_o three_o thing_n former_o mention_v be_v all_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o sanctification_n of_o hypocrite_n and_o of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o they_o go_v so_o close_o together_o that_o you_o will_v say_v it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o discern_v justification_n by_o sanctification_n 1_o for_o the_o root_n of_o it_o the_o soul_n have_v fellowship_n with_o christ_n the_o holy_a ghost_n come_v into_o the_o soul_n &_o work_v faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o this_o be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o christian_a sanctification_n ezek._n 36.27_o and_o for_o faith_n it_o be_v that_o which_o purify_v the_o heart_n act_v 15.9_o &_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n heb._n 11.6_o so_o that_o faith_n must_v concur_v unto_o the_o rootednesse_n of_o our_o sanctification_n in_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n do_v attribute_v both_o these_o root_n unto_o both_o sort_n unto_o those_o christian_n that_o shall_v afterward_o fall_v away_o to_o sin_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n heb._n 6._o they_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o heavenly_a gift_n and_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o heavenly_a gift_n be_v faith_n which_o the_o apostle_n reckon_v chief_o among_o the_o principle_n of_o christian_a religion_n vers_fw-la 1._o a_o taste_n they_o have_v both_o of_o faith_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n yet_o from_o both_o these_o they_o fall_v away_o you_o know_v what_o be_v say_v of_o saul_n 1_o sam._n 10.10_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v upon_o he_o and_o so_o do_v it_o likewise_o upon_o judas_n and_o demas_n up_o faith_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n for_o salvation_n and_o that_o faith_n which_o former_o they_o have_v pitch_v upon_o their_o good_a duty_n they_o will_v now_o pitch_v upon_o christ_n but_o still_o it_o be_v the_o same_o faith_n for_o the_o root_n be_v not_o yet_o burn_v up_o the_o old_a corruption_n still_o remain_v in_o they_o and_o so_o here_o be_v your_o old_a faith_n still_o translate_v from_o one_o object_n to_o another_o it_o be_v fasten_v before_o upon_o your_o duty_n and_o reformation_n and_o now_o upon_o christ_n though_o by_o creature-strength_n and_o now_o a_o man_n be_v ready_a to_o plead_v and_o say_v if_o god_n have_v not_o love_v i_o he_o will_v never_o have_v set_v i_o upon_o such_o reformation_n nor_o have_v enlarge_v i_o with_o such_o comfort_n if_o he_o have_v not_o be_v well_o please_v with_o i_o in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o though_o i_o have_v be_v sometime_o burn_v up_o touch_v my_o hope_n in_o reformation_n yet_o i_o have_v translate_v my_o faith_n to_o jesus_n christ_n but_o how_o come_v you_o to_o do_v that_o why_o i_o see_v my_o hope_n in_o my_o own_o reformation_n will_v not_o serve_v my_o turn_n and_o therefore_o i_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o now_o shall_v nothing_o draw_v i_o from_o he_o nor_o pull_v i_o from_o my_o confidence_n for_o i_o have_v build_v upon_o some_o word_n of_o god_n and_o some_o promise_n of_o his_o make_v unto_o such_o reformation_n as_o i_o have_v set_v upon_o and_o be_v not_o this_o true_a faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n this_o be_v far_o from_o true_a faith_n it_o be_v no_o other_o but_o a_o strong_a fallacy_n whereby_o the_o devil_n do_v cheat_v man_n and_o in_o truth_n this_o faith_n be_v but_o a_o faith_n of_o a_o man_n own_o make_v that_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v it_o be_v no_o
