II. 1 Tobit leaveth his meat to bury the dead 10 and becometh blinde 11 His wife taketh in work to get her living 14 Her husband and she fall out about a kid NOw when I was come home again and my wife Anna was restored unto me with my son Tobias in the feast of Pentecost which is the holy feast of the seven weeks there was a good dinner prepared me in the which I sat down to eat 2 And when I saw abundance of meat I said to my son Go and bring what poor man soever thou shalt finde out of our brethren who is mindful of the Lord and to I tarry for thee 3 But he came again and said Father one of our nation is strangled and is cast out in the market-place 4 Then before I had tasted of any meat I start up and took him up into a room until the going down of the sun 5 Then I returned and washed my self and ate my meat in heaviness 6 Remembring that prophesie of * Aa●●● 8.10 Amos as he said Your feasts shall be turned into mourning and all your mirth into lamentation 7 There fore I wept and after the going down of the sun I went and made a grave and buried him 8 But my neighbours mocked me and said This man is not yet afraid to be put to death for this matter * Chap. 1.19 who fled away and yet lo he burieth the dead again 9 The same night also I returned from the burial and slept by the wall of my court-yard being polluted and my face was uncovered 10 And I knew not that there were ‖ Or swallows sparrows in the wall and mine eyes being open the sparrows muted warm dung into mine eyes and ‖ Or white films a whiteness came in mine eyes and I went to the physicians but they helped me not moreover Achiacharus did nourish me until I went into Elymais 11 And my wife Anna ‖ Or was ●●red to spin in the woment rooms did take womens works to do 12 And when she had sent ‖ Or 〈◊〉 work them home to the owners they paid her wages and gave her also besides a kid 13 And when it was in my house and began to cry I said unto her From whence is this kid is it not stoln render it to the owners * Deut. 22.1 for it is not lawful to eat any thing that is stoln 14 * Job 2.9 But she replied upon me It was given for a gift more then the wages howbeit I did not beleeve her but bade her render it to the owners and I was abashed at her But she replied upon me Where are thine alms and thy righteous deeds ‖ Or lo all things are known to thee behold thou and all thy works are known CHAP. III. 1 Tobit grieved with his wives taunts prayeth 11 Sara reproached by ber fathers maids prayeth also 17 An angel is sent to help them both THen I being grieved did weep and in my sorrow prayed saying 2 O Lord thou art just and all thy works and all thy ways are mercy and truth and thou judgest truly and justly for ever 3 Remember me and look on me punish me not for my sins and ignorances and the sins of my fathers who have sinned before thee 4 For they obeyed not thy commandments wherefore thou hast delivered us * Deut. 28.15 37. for a spoil and unto captivity and unto death and for a proverb of reproach to all the nations among whom we are dispersed 5 And now thy judgements are many and true deal with me according to my sins and my fathers because we have not kept thy commandments neither have walked in truth before thee 6 Now therefore deal with me as seemeth best unto thee and command my spirit to be taken from me that I may be ‖ Or dismissed or delivered dissolved and become earth for it is prositable for me to die rather then to live because I have heard false reproaches and have much sorrow command therefore that I may now be delivered out of this distress and go into the everlasting place turn not thy face away from me 7 It came to pass the same day that in Ecbatane a city of Media Sara the daughter of Raguel was also reproached by her fathers maids 8 Because that she had been married to seven husbands whom Asmodeus the evil spirit had killed before they had lien with her Dost thou not know said they that thou hast strangled thine husbands thou hast had already seven husbands neither wast thou named after any of them 9 Wherefore dost thou beat us for them if they be dead go
him 〈◊〉 upon Bel. bring him and intreat Bel that he may speak as though he were able to understand 42 Yet they cannot understand this themselves and leave them for they have no ‖ Or sense knowledge 43 The women also with cords about them sitting in the ways burn bran for perfume but if any of them drawn by some that passeth by lie with him she reproacheth her fellow that she was not thought as worthy as her self nor her cord broken 44 Whatsoever is done among them is false how may it then be thought or said that they are gods 45 They are made of carpenters and gold-smiths they can be nothing else then the workman will have them to be 46 And they themselves that made them can never continue long how should then the things that are made of them be gods 47 For they left lies and reproaches to them that come after 48 For when there cometh any war or plague upon them the priests consult with themselves where they may be hidden with them 49 How then cannot men perceive that they be no gods which can neither save themselves from war nor from plague 50 * Ps 115.4 Wisd 13.10 For seeing they be but of wood and overlaid with silver and gold it shall be known hereafter that they are false 51 And it shall manifestly appear to all nations and kings that they are no gods but the works of mens hands and that there is no work of God in them 52 Who then may not know that they are no gods 53 For neither can they set up a king in the land nor give rain unto men 54 Neither can they judge their own cause nor redress a wrong being unable for they are as crows between heaven and earth 55 Whereupon when fire falleth upon the house of gods of wood or laid over with gold or silver their priests will flee away and escape but they themselves shall be burnt asunder like beams 56 Moreover they cannot withstand any king or enemies how can it then be thought or said that they be gods 57 Neither are those gods of wood and laid over with silver or gold able to escape either from theeves or robbers 58 Whos 's gold and silver and garments wherewith they are clothed they that are strong do take and go away withal neither are they able to help themselves 59 Therefore it is better to be a king that sheweth his power or else a profitable vessel in an house which the owner shall have use of then such false gods or to be a door in an house to keep such things safe as be therein then such false gods or a pillar of wood in a palace then such false gods 60 For sun moon and stars being bright and sent to do their offices are obedient 61 In like manner the lightning when it breaketh forth is easie to be seen and ‖ Or the same ●ind after the same manner the wind bloweth in every countrey 62 And when God commandeth the clouds to go over the whole world they do as they are bidden 63 And the fire sent from above to consume hills and woods doeth as it is commanded but these are like unto them neither in shew nor power 64 Wherefore it is neither to be supposed nor said that they are gods seeing they are able neither to judge causes nor to do good unto men 65 Knowing therefore that they are no gods fear them not 66 For they can neither curse nor bless kings 67 Neither can they shew signs in the heavens among the heathen nor shine as the sun nor give light as the moon 68 The beasts are better then they for they can get under a covert and help themselves 69 It is then by no means manifest unto us that they are gods therefore fear them not 70 For as a scar-crow in a garden of cucumbers keepeth nothing so are their gods of wood and laid over with silver and gold 71 And likewise their gods of wood and laid over with silver and gold are like to a whitethorn in an orchard that every bird sitteth upon as also to a dead body that is cast into the dark 72 And you shall know them to be no gods by the ‖ Or purple and brightness bright purple that rotteth upon them and they themselves afterward shall be eaten and shall be a reproach in the countrey 73 Better therefore is the just man that hath none idols for he shall be far from reproach ¶ The song of the three holy children which followeth in the third chapter of DANIEL after this place fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace That which followeth is not in the Hebrew to wit And they walked unto these words Then Nebuchadnezzar verse 24. 2 Azarias his prayer and confession in the flame 24 wherewith the Caldeans about the oven were consumed but the three children within it were not hurt 28 The song of the three children in the oven ANd they walked in the midst of the fire praising God and blessing the Lord. 2 Then Azarias stood up and prayed on this manner and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire said 3 Blessed art thou O Lord God of our fathers thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for evermore 4 For thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done to us yea true are all thy works thy ways are right and * Psal ●● 1● all thy judgements truth 5 In all the things which thou hast brought upon us and upon the holy city of our fathers even Jerusalem thou hast executed true judgement for according to truth and judgement didst thou bring all these things upon us because of our sins 6 For we have sinned and committed iniquity departing from thee 7 In all things have we trespassed and not obeyed thy commandments nor kept them neither done as thou hast commanded us that it might go well with us 8 Wherefore all that thou hast brought upon us and every thing that thou hast done to us thou hast done in true judgement 9 And thou didst deliver us into the hands of lawless enemies most hateful forsakers of God and to an unjust king and the most wicked in all the world 10 And now we cannot open our mouths we are become a shame and reproach to thy servants and to them that worship thee 11 Yet deliver us not up wholly for thy names sake neither disanul thou thy covenant 12 And cause not thy mercy to depart from us for thy beloved Abrahams sake for thy servant Isaacs sake and for thy holy Israels sake 13 To whom thou hast spoken and promised That thou wouldest multiply their seed as the stars of heaven and as the sand that lieth upon the sea-shore 14 For we O Lord are become less then any nation and be kept under this day in all the world because of our sins 15 Neither is there at this time prince or prophet or leader or
of age and she lay a dying But as he went the people thronged him 43 ¶ And a woman having an issue of bloud twelve years which had ●●entall her living upon physicians neither could be healed of any 44 Came behinde him and touched the border of his garment and immediately her issue of bloud stanched 45 And Jesus said Who touched me When all denied Peter and they that were with him said Master the multitude throng thee and pre●●s thee and sayest thou Who touched me 46 And Jesus said Some holy hath touched me for I perceive that vertue is gone out of me 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid she came trembling falling down before him she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him how she was healed immediatly 48 And he said unto her Daughter be of good comfort thy faith hath made thee whole go in peace 49 ¶ While he yet spake there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogues ●●use saying to him Thy daughter is dead trouble not the Master 50 But when Jesus heard it he answered him saying Fear not believe only and she shall be made whole 51 And when he came into the house he suffered no man to go in save Peter and James and John the father the mother of the maiden 52 And all wept and bewailed her but he said Weep not she is not dead but the path 53 And they laughed him to scorn knowing that she was dead 54 And he●p ●t them all out and took her by the hand and called saying Maid Arise 55 And her spirit came again and she arose straightway and he commanded to give her meat 56 And her parents were astonished but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done CHAP. IX 1 Christ sendeth his apostles to work miracles and to preach 7 Herod desireth to set Christ 17 Christ feedeth five thousand 18 enquireth what opinion the world had of him foretelleth his passion 23 proposeth to all the pattern of his patience 28 The transfiguration 37 He healeth the lunatick 43 again forewarneth his disciples of his passion 46 commendeth humility 51 hiddeth them to shew mildness towards all without desire of revenge 57 Divers would follow him ●ut upon conditions THen * Mat. 10.1 he called his twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all devils and to cure diseases 2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick 3 And he said unto them Take nothing for your journey neither staves nor ser●● neither bread neither money neither have two coats apiece 4 And whatsoever house ye enter into there abide thence depart 5 And whosoever will not receive you when ye go out of that city shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them 6 And they departed and went through the towns preaching the gospel and healing every where 7 ¶ * Mat. 14.1 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him and he was perplexed because that it was said of some that John was risen from the dead 8 And of some that Elias had appeared and of others that one of the old prophets was risen again 9 And Herod said John have I beheaded but who is this of whom I hear such things And he desired to see him 10 ¶ And the apostles when they were returned told him all that they had done * Mat. 14.13 And he took them and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida 11 And the people when they knew it followed him and he received them and spake unto them of the kingdom of God and healed them that had need of healing 12 * Mat. 14.15 And when the day began to wear away then came the twelve and said unto him Send the multitude away that they may go into the towns and countrey round about and lodge and get victuals for we are here in a desert place 13 But he said unto them Give ye them to eat And they said We have no more but five loaves and two fishes except we should go and buy meat for all this people 14 For they were about five thousand men And he said to his disciples Make them sit down by fifties in a company 15 And they did so and made them all sit down 16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes and looking up to heaven he blessed them and brake and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude 17 And they did eat and were all filled and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets 18 ¶ * Mat. 16.13 And it came to pass as he was alone praying his disciples were with him and he asked them saying Whom say the people that I am 19 They answering said John the Baptist but some say Elias and others say that one of the old prophets is risen again 20 He said unto them But whom say ye that I am Peter answering said The Christ of God 21 And he straitly charged them and commanded them to tell no man that thing 22 Saying * Mat. 17.22 The Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be slain and be raised the third day 23 ¶ * Mat. 10.53 And he said to them all If any man will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it but whosoever will lose his life for my sake the same shall save it 25 * Mat. 16.26 Mat. 8.36 For what is a man advantaged if he gain the whole world and lose himself or be cast away 26 * Mat. 10.35 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words of him shall the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his own glory and in his Fathers and of the holy angels 27 * Mat. 16.28 But I tell you of a truth there be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the kingdom of God 28 ¶ * Mat. 17.1 And it came to pass about an eight days after these ‖ Or things sayings he took Peter and John and James and went up into a mountain to pray 29 And as he prayed the fashion of his countenance was altered and his raiment was white and glistering 30 And behold there talked with him two men which were Moses and Elias 31 Who appeared in glory and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem 32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep and when they were awake they saw his glory and the two men that stood with him 33 And it came to pass as they departed from him Peter said unto Jesus Master it is good for us to be here
in the midst of them and saith unto them Peace be unto you 37 But they were terrified and affrighted and supposed that they had seen a spirit 38 And he said unto them Why are ye troubled and why do thoughts arise in your hearts 39 Behold my hands and my feet that it is I my self handle me and see for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as ye see me have 40 And when he had thus spoken he shewed them his hands his feet 41 And while they yet beleveed not for joy and wondred he said unto them Have ye here any meat 42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish of an honey-comb 43 And he took it and did eat before them 44 And he said unto them These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the psalms concerning me 45 Then opened he their understanding that they might understand the scriptures 46 And said unto them Thus it is written and thus it behoved Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem 48 And ye are witnesses of these things 49 ¶ * John 1● 26 Act. 1.4 And behold I send the promise of my Father upon you but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be indued with power from on high 50 ¶ And he led them out as far as to Bethanie and he lift up his hands and blessed them 51 * Mark 16.19 Acts 1.9 And it came to pass while he blessed them he was parted from them and carried up into heaven 52 And they worshipped him returned to Jerusalem with great joy 53 And were continually in the temple praising blessing God Amen ¶ The Gospel according to S. from beneath I am from above ye are of this world I am not of this world 24 I said therefore unto you that ye shall die in your sins for if ye beleeve not that I am he ye shall die in your sins 25 Then said th●y unto him Who art thou And Jesus saith unto them Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning 26 I have many things to say and to judge of you but he that sent me is true and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him 27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father 28 Then said ●es●● unto them When ye ha●e lift up the Son of man then shall ye know that I am he and that I do nothing of myself but as my Father hath taught me I speak these things 29 And he that sent me is with me the Father hath not left me alone for I do always those things that please him 30 As he s●ake these words many beleeved on him Then said Jesus to those Jews which beleeved on him If ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed 32 And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free 33 ¶ They answered him We be Abrahams seed and were never in bondage to any man how sayest thou Ye shall be made free 34 Jesu answered them Verily verily I say unto you * Rom. 6.20 1 Pet. 2.19 Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever but the Son abideth ever 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed 37 I know that ye are Abrahams seed but ye seek to kill me because my word hath no place in you 38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father and ye do that which ye have seen with your father 39 They answered and said unto him Abraham is our father Jesus saith unto them If ye were Abrahams children ye would do the works of Abraham 40 But now ye seek to kill me a man that hath told you the truth which I have heard of God this did not Abraham 41 Ye do the deeds of your father Then said they to him We be not born of fornication we have one Father even God 42 Jesus said unto them If God were your Father ye would love me for I proceeded forth and came from God neither came I of my self but he sent me 43 Why do ye not understand my speech even because ye cannot hear my word 44 * 1 John 3.8 Ye are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father ye will do he was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him When he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it 45 And because I tell you the truth ye beleeve me not 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin And if I say the truth why do ye not beleeve me 47 * 1 John 4.6 He that is of God heareth Gods words ye therefore hear them not because ye are not of God 48 Then answered the Jews and said unto him Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil 49 Jesus answered I have not a devil but I honour my Father and ye do dishonour me 50 And I seek not mine own glory there is one that seeketh judgeth 51 Verily verily I say unto you If a man keep my saying he shall never see death 52 Then said the Jews unto him Now we know that thou hast a devil Abraham is dead and the prophets and thou sayest If a man keep my saying he shall never taste of death 53 Art thou greater then our father Abraham which is dead and the prophets are dead whom makest thou thy self 54 Jesus answered If I honour my self my honour is nothing it is my Father that honoureth me of whom ye say that he is your God 55 Yet ye have not known him but I know him and if I should say I know him not I shall be a liar like unto you but I know him and keep his saying 56 Your father Abraham rejoyced to see my day and he saw it and was glad 57 Then said the Jews unto him Thou art not yet fifty years old and hast thou seen Abraham 58 Jesus said unto them Verily verily I say unto you Before Abraham was I am 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him but Jesus hid himself went out of the temple going through the midst of them so passed by CHAP. IX 1 The man that was born blinde restored to sight 8 He is brought to the Pharisees 13 They are offended at it and excommunicate him 35 but he is received of Jesus and confesseth him 39 Who they are whom Christ enlightneth ANd as Jesus passed by he saw a man which was blinde from his birth 2 And his disciples asked him saying Master who did sin this man or his parents that he was born blinde 3 Jesus answered Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him 4 I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day the night cometh when no man can work 5 As long as I am in the world * Chap. 1.9 I am the light of the world 6 When he had thus spoken he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he ‖ Or spread the clay upon the eyes of the blinde man anointed the eyes of the blinde man with the clay 7 And said unto him Go wash in the pool of Siloam which is by interpretation Sent. He went his way therefore and washed and came seeing 8 ¶ The neighbours therefore and they which before had seen him that he was blinde said Is not this he that sat and begged 9 Some said This is he others said He is like him but he said I am he 10 Therefore said they unto him How were thine eyes opened 11 He answered and said A man that is called Jesus made clay and anointed mine eyes and said unto me Go to the pool of Siloam and wash and I went and washed and I received sight 12 Then said they unto him Where is he He said I know not 13 ¶ They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blinde 14 And it was the sabbath-day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes 15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight He said unto them He put clay upon mine eyes and I washed and do see 16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees This man is not of God because he keepeth not the sabbath-day Others said How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles And there was a division among them 17 They say unto the blinde man again What sayest thou of him

XVII 1 Christ prayeth to his Father to glorifie him 6 to preserve his apostles 11 in unity 17 and truth 20 to glorifie them and all other beleevers with him in heaven THese words spake Jesus and lift up his eyes to heaven and said Father the hour is come glorifie thy Son that thy Son also may glorifie thee 2 * Mat. 28.18 As thou hast given him power over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him 3 And this is life eternal that they might know thee the onely true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent 4 I have glorified thee on the earth I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do 5 And now O Father glorifie thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world thine they were and thou gavest them me and they have kept thy word 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee 8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me and they have received them * Chap. 16.27 and have known surely that I came out from thee and they have beleeved that thou didst send me 9 I pray for them I pray not for the world but for them which thou hast given me for they are thine 10 And all mine are thine thine are mine

II. It is not agreeable to Christian profession to regard
not God hath made him a liar because he beleeved not the record that God gave of his Son 11 And this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life and this life is in his Son 12 He that hath the Son hath life and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life 13 These things have I written unto you that beleeve on the name of the Son of God that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may beleeve on the name of the Son of God 14 And this is the confidence that we have ‖ Or concerning him in him that * Ch. 3.22 if we ask any thing according to his will he heareth us 15 And if we know that he hear us whatsoever we ask we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death he shall ask and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death * Mat. 12.31 Mar. 3.23 There is a sin unto death I do not say that he shall pray for it 17 All unrighteousness is sin and there is a sin not unto death 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself and that wicked one toucheth him not 19 And we know that we are of God and the whole world lieth in wickedness 20 And we know that the Son of God is come and hath given us an understanding that we may know him that is true and we are in him that is true even in his Son Jesus Christ This is the true God and eternal life 21 Little children keep your selves from idols Amen ¶ The second epistle of S. JUDE He exhorteth them to be constant in the profession of the faith 14 False teachers are crept in to seduce them for whose damnable doctrine and manners horrible punishment is prepared 20 whereas the godly by the assistance of the holy Spirit and prayers to God may persevere and grow in grace and keep themselves and recover others out of the snares of those deceivers JUde the servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James to them that are sanctified by God the Father and preserved in Jesus Christ and called 2 Mercy unto you and peace and love be multiplied 3 Beloved when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation it was needful for me to write unto you and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares who were before of old ordained to this condemnation ungodly men turning the grace of our God
