godliness_n nor_o godliness_n it_o there_o be_v some_o evil_a person_n and_o teacher_n also_o it_o may_v seem_v in_o the_o apostle_n time_n that_o do_v so_o suppose_v and_o so_o out_o of_o a_o worldly_a design_n do_v make_v a_o profession_n of_o the_o faith_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o of_o the_o christian_a religion_n of_o they_o st._n paul_n speak_v in_o this_o epistle_n to_o timothy_n say_v unto_o he_o of_o some_o man_n that_o they_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o truth_n suppose_v that_o gain_n be_v godliness_n from_o such_o withdraw_v thyself_o 1_o tim._n 6._o 5._o their_n appear_v piety_n and_o profession_n of_o godliness_n be_v a_o cloak_n of_o covetousness_n and_o a_o engine_n which_o they_o make_v use_v of_o to_o advance_v themselves_o in_o the_o world_n and_o when_o their_o procession_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n will_v not_o conduce_v or_o contribute_v to_o their_o worldly_a design_n they_o will_v then_o take_v their_o leaf_n of_o that_o and_o embrace_v another_o which_o they_o imagine_v will_v and_o thus_o it_o may_v just_o be_v fear_v it_o be_v with_o too_o too_o many_o in_o our_o day_n and_o time_n in_o which_o we_o live_v that_o be_v the_o best_a religion_n with_o they_o the_o pure_a apostolic_a worship_n which_o tend_v to_o secure_v they_o from_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n and_o affliction_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o which_o in_o all_o likelihood_n conduce_v to_o their_o secular_a advantage_n and_o grandeur_n in_o the_o world_n they_o be_v too_o much_o like_o the_o pharisee_n in_o our_o saviour_n time_n who_o be_v so_o zealous_a for_o the_o tradition_n of_o the_o elder_n and_o so_o superstitious_a in_o observe_v their_o groundless_a and_o unnecessary_a ceremony_n and_o superfluous_a imposition_n and_o under_o all_o this_o their_o heart_n go_v after_o and_o they_o hot_o pursue_v their_o covetousness_n matt._n 15._o 1_o 9_o and_o ch_n 23._o and_o they_o deride_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n when_o they_o hear_v this_o doctrine_n from_o he_o to_o wit_n no_o servant_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n for_o either_o he_o will_v hate_v the_o one_o and_o love_v the_o other_o or_o else_o he_o will_v hold_v to_o the_o one_o and_o despise_v the_o other_o you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n luk._n 16._o 13_o 14_o 15._o thus_o also_o some_o of_o the_o jew_n when_o they_o see_v the_o mighty_a and_o stupendous_a work_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n and_o right_o conclude_v from_o thence_o that_o he_o that_o effect_v such_o wonderful_a work_n can_v if_o he_o please_v deliver_v they_o from_o their_o enemy_n how_o numerous_a or_o potent_a soever_o they_o be_v and_o that_o he_o can_v make_v they_o the_o head_n of_o the_o nation_n round_o about_o they_o and_o exalt_v they_o to_o glory_n and_o riches_n in_o this_o world_n and_o upon_o this_o account_n they_o will_v have_v come_v and_o take_v he_o by_o force_n to_o make_v he_o their_o king_n and_o when_o our_o lord_n will_v by_o no_o mean_n comply_v with_o they_o but_o depart_v from_o they_o when_o the_o people_n therefore_o see_v that_o jesus_n be_v not_o there_o they_o take_v ship_v and_o come_v to_o capernaum_n seek_v for_o jesus_n how_o great_a pain_n do_v this_o people_n take_v to_o find_v christ_n and_o what_o zeal_n do_v they_o express_v in_o follow_v he_o and_o yet_o their_o zeal_n be_v as_o faulty_a as_o servant_n for_o they_o still_o pursue_v a_o worldly_a design_n under_o all_o this_o appear_a love_n to_o he_o and_o zeal_n in_o seek_v he_o as_o our_o saviour_n also_o signify_v in_o the_o reproof_n and_o counsel_n which_o he_o give_v unto_o they_o unto_o who_o he_o say_v very_o very_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o you_o seek_v i_o not_o because_o you_o see_v the_o miracle_n in_o which_o his_o power_n and_o pity_n be_v express_v suppose_v gain_v to_o be_v godliness_n their_o aim_n and_o design_n be_v worldly_a and_o ambitious_a while_o they_o appear_v to_o have_v a_o servant_n affection_n to_o christ_n and_o a_o earnest_a desire_n to_o follow_v he_o christ_n be_v but_o the_o way_n whereby_o they_o hope_v to_o arrive_v at_o the_o end_n of_o their_o pursuit_n to_o wit_n worldly_a victory_n tranquillity_n grandeur_n and_o domination_n john_n 6._o 14_o 15_o 24_o 26_o 27._o and_o how_o many_o be_v there_o that_o under_o pretence_n of_o religion_n pursue_v mammon_n so_o do_v they_o which_o cause_v division_n and_o offence_n contrary_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n of_o who_o the_o apostle_n say_v they_o that_o be_v such_o serve_v not_o our_o lord_n jesus_n but_o their_o own_o belly_n and_o by_o good_a word_n and_o fair_a speech_n deceive_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o simple_a rom._n 16._o 17_o 18._o such_o also_o be_v they_o concern_v who_o the_o apostle_n thus_o write_v to_o the_o philippian_n say_v for_o many_o walk_n of_o who_o i_o have_v tell_v you_o often_o and_o now_o tell_v you_o even_o weep_v that_o they_o be_v the_o enemy_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n who_o end_n be_v destruction_n who_o god_n be_v their_o belly_n who_o glory_n be_v in_o their_o shame_n who_o mind_n earthly_a thing_n to_o wit_n only_o or_o main_o phil._n 3._o 18_o 19_o but_o however_o too_o too_o many_o do_v false_o and_o mistake_o suppose_n yet_o godliness_n be_v no_o worldly_a design_n or_o artifice_n 2._o nor_o be_v godliness_n the_o bodily_a exercise_n here_o mention_v by_o the_o apostle_n but_o it_o be_v oppose_v thereto_o in_o this_o verse_n where_o he_o say_v bodily_a exercise_n profit_v little_a but_o godliness_n be_v profitable_a unto_o all_o thing_n etc._n etc._n but_o before_o we_o speak_v further_o hereto_o it_o may_v not_o be_v amiss_o but_o useful_a for_o we_o to_o consider_v that_o by_o bodily_a exercise_n here_o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o mean_a or_o intend_v a_o diligent_a service_n of_o god_n providence_n in_o any_o lawful_a and_o honest_a call_v trade_n or_o employment_n nor_o do_v the_o apostle_n any_o where_o speak_v mean_o or_o undervalue_o concern_v diligence_n after_o satan_n idleness_n be_v their_o first_o evil_a there_o mention_v and_o a_o fruitful_a one_o also_o in_o they_o and_o they_o proceed_v from_o evil_a to_o evil_n when_o they_o do_v not_o bear_v child_n etc._n etc._n they_o bring_v forth_o the_o bat_n of_o sin_n and_o satan_n 1_o tim._n 5._o 13_o 15._o and_o the_o same_o apostle_n give_v this_o command_n to_o the_o believer_n to_o withdraw_v and_o it_o be_v well_o worthy_a our_o observation_n that_o when_o paul_n say_v you_o remember_v brethren_n our_o labour_n and_o travel_v for_o labour_a night_n and_o day_n because_o we_o will_v not_o be_v chargeable_a unto_o any_o of_o you_o we_o preach_v unto_o you_o the_o gospel_n of_o god_n he_o then_o immediate_o add_v you_o be_v witness_n and_o god_n also_o how_o holy_o and_o just_o etc._n religious_a account_n and_o that_o this_o be_v here_o mean_v by_o bodily_a exercise_n appear_v in_o the_o foregoing_a verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n for_o there_o the_o apostle_n say_v now_o the_o spirit_n speak_v express_o that_o in_o the_o latter_a time_n some_o will_v depart_v from_o the_o faith_n give_v heed_n to_o seduce_a spirit_n and_o doctrine_n of_o devil_n forbid_v to_o marry_v and_o unto_o man_n yet_o within_o they_o be_v full_a of_o hypocrisy_n and_o iniquity_n and_o against_o they_o our_o lord_n denounce_v many_o heavy_a and_o severe_a woe_n mat._n 15._o 1_o 9_o 20._o and_o chap._n 23._o 4_o 5_o 23_o 28._o and_o so_o it_o be_v too_o too_o much_o in_o our_o time_n with_o very_a many_o profess_a christian_n of_o the_o reform_a religion_n some_o be_v so_o very_o hot_a and_o earnest_a for_o the_o tradition_n and_o imposition_n of_o the_o elder_n that_o they_o almost_o or_o altogether_o equalise_v they_o unto_o if_o not_o prefer_v they_o before_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o some_o other_o be_v so_o very_o superstitious_o zealous_a against_o they_o that_o they_o therein_o make_v little_a or_o nothing_o of_o disobedience_n to_o civil_a magistrate_n or_o and_o voyage_n ride_v through_o thick_a and_o thin_a expose_v themselves_o to_o the_o cold_a and_o other_o inconvenience_n but_o the_o hope_n and_o expectation_n of_o profit_n in_o all_o labour_n there_o be_v profit_n eye_v design_v and_o pursue_v prov._n 14._o 23._o and_o if_o man_n rise_v up_o early_o and_o sit_v down_o late_o and_o eat_v the_o bread_n of_o carefulness_n for_o secular_a gain_n and_o advantage_n much_o rather_o shall_v we_o so_o mind_n the_o great_a and_o excellent_a gain_n of_o true_a piety_n as_o to_o apply_v ourselves_o thereto_o with_o all_o our_o might_n and_o main_a and_o endure_v any_o hardship_n in_o that_o application_n that_o we_o may_v be_v make_v partaker_n thereof_o as_o the_o apostle_n and_o his_o fellow-labourer_n do_v as_o he_o signify_v to_o we_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n but_o one_o to_o this_o we_o be_v discourse_v of_o say_v therefore_o because_o godliness_n be_v so_o general_o and_o great_o gainful_a we_o both_o labour_n and_o suffer_v reproach_n 1_o tim._n 4._o 8_o 10._o and_o in_o our_o work_n and_o continue_v abound_v in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n our_o labour_n shall_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a in_o the_o lord_n 1_o cor._n 15._o 58._o but_o to_o this_o i_o shall_v enlarge_v no_o further_o at_o present_a because_o there_o will_v be_v apt_a occasion_n to_o speak_v more_o particular_o hereto_o in_o the_o follow_a part_n of_o the_o word_n in_o which_o the_o apostle_n do_v more_o distinct_o evidence_n the_o truth_n of_o what_o he_o more_o indistinct_o propound_v in_o the_o former_a part_n say_v have_v promise_n of_o the_o life_n that_o now_o be_v and_o of_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v but_o now_o from_o this_o motive_n as_o thus_o general_o propound_v to_o move_v and_o provoke_v we_o to_o exercise_v ourselves_o to_o true_a piety_n we_o may_v infer_v several_a thing_n which_o may_v be_v useful_a for_o we_o as_o 1._o see_v this_o be_v propound_v by_o the_o apostle_n to_o persuade_v we_o to_o follow_v godliness_n that_o it_o be_v profitable_a unto_o all_o thing_n then_o we_o may_v from_o hence_o learn_v that_o it_o be_v no_o mercenary_a or_o base_a thing_n but_o what_o be_v well_o please_v unto_o god_n that_o we_o shall_v so_o mind_v and_o consider_v the_o gain_n and_o profit_n of_o godliness_n that_o we_o may_v exercise_v ourselves_o to_o the_o mystery_n and_o practice_n of_o it_o indeed_o when_o we_o follow_v religion_n for_o the_o advantage_n promotion_n and_o grandeur_n of_o this_o world_n only_o or_o principal_o then_o we_o may_v true_o be_v say_v to_o be_v mercenary_a and_o shall_v no_o long_o appear_v to_o be_v religious_a then_o as_o that_o may_v conduce_v unto_o our_o secular_a interest_n and_o ambitious_a design_n as_o before_o we_o have_v say_v and_o as_o the_o devil_n false_o and_o malicious_o suggest_v concern_v job_n chap._n 1._o 9_o 11._o but_o we_o may_v so_o consider_v the_o real_a and_o eternal_a gain_n of_o true_a piety_n as_o to_o quicken_v excite_v and_o perpetuate_v our_o endeavour_n and_o pursuit_n after_o pure_a reliligion_n and_o yet_o not_o at_o all_o be_v mercenary_a in_o a_o unworthy_a sense_n or_o reprovable_a consideration_n and_o that_o we_o may_v lawful_o and_o allowable_o have_v a_o eye_n and_o respect_n to_o the_o advantage_n and_o gain_v of_o true_a piety_n to_o engage_v we_o to_o exercise_v ourselves_o to_o the_o serious_a and_o constant_a practice_n of_o it_o do_v appear_v 1._o because_o god_n people_n when_o they_o have_v neglect_v their_o duty_n have_v be_v just_o reprove_v for_o not_o believe_v that_o religion_n be_v their_o great_a and_o true_a interest_n or_o for_o not_o pursue_v advantageous_a thing_n elihu_n somewhat_o severe_o reprove_v job_n say_v think_v thou_o this_o to_o be_v right_a for_o thou_o have_v say_v what_o advantage_n will_v it_o be_v unto_o thou_o and_o what_o profit_n shall_v i_o have_v if_o i_o be_v cleanse_v from_o my_o sin_n whereas_o as_o he_o afterward_o add_v though_o we_o give_v nothing_o to_o god_n if_o we_o be_v righteous_a yet_o our_o righteousness_n will_v profit_v the_o son_n of_o man_n job_n 36._o 2_o 3_o 7_o 8._o and_o the_o lord_n himself_o do_v fault_n be_v further_a evident_a and_o evidence_v in_o that_o god_n in_o his_o promise_n do_v set_v the_o gain_n of_o it_o before_o we_o to_o make_v we_o true_o pious_a and_o if_o this_o be_v to_o be_v mercenary_a to_o have_v a_o respect_n to_o the_o recompense_n of_o the_o reward_n god_n make_v man_n so_o by_o his_o assurance_n and_o encouragement_n thus_o he_o say_v unto_o abram_n the_o father_n such_o respect_n unto_o the_o crown_n of_o glory_n as_o that_o none_o of_o the_o thing_n we_o suffer_v may_v move_v we_o and_o therefore_o that_o be_v propose_v to_o we_o to_o strengthen_v we_o to_o suffer_v adversity_n and_o persecution_n bless_a be_v you_o say_v our_o saviour_n when_o man_n shall_v hate_v you_o and_o when_o they_o shall_v separate_v you_o from_o their_o company_n and_o shall_v reproach_v you_o and_o cast_v out_o your_o name_n as_o evil_n for_o the_o son_n of_o man_n sake_n rejoice_v you_o in_o that_o day_n and_o leap_v for_o joy_n for_o behold_v mind_n and_o consider_v we_o thereto_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v be_v backward_o to_o undertake_v or_o continue_v in_o this_o good_a work_n and_o therefore_o oftentimes_o the_o future_a advantage_n of_o this_o pious_a work_n be_v propose_v that_o we_o may_v be_v forward_o thereto_o thus_o our_o lord_n say_v to_o the_o youngman_n who_o he_o love_v if_o thou_o will_v be_v perfect_a go_v and_o sell_v that_o thou_o have_v and_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a and_o thou_o shall_v have_v treasure_n in_o heaven_n mat._n 19_o 21._o and_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n our_o saviour_n speak_v unto_o his_o disciple_n also_o say_v sell_v that_o you_o have_v and_o give_v alm_n provide_v yourselves_o bag_n which_o wax_v not_o old_a a_o treasure_n in_o the_o heaven_n that_o fail_v not_o where_o no_o thief_n approach_v nor_o moth_n future_a reward_n assure_v to_o they_o that_o exercise_n themselves_o in_o that_o work_n of_o perfection_n to_o this_o purpose_n when_o our_o lord_n give_v this_o command_n to_o his_o disciple_n namely_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o which_o hear_v love_v your_o enemy_n do_v good_a to_o they_o which_o hate_v you_o bless_v they_o that_o curse_v you_o and_o pray_v for_o they_o that_o despiteful_o use_v you_o and_o persecute_v you_o he_o afterward_o in_o the_o same_o discourse_n assure_v they_o that_o their_o observe_n and_o obey_v this_o command_n will_v be_v for_o their_o own_o profit_n and_o
