howsoever_o evident_a man_n fancy_n that_o their_o principle_n and_o motive_n be_v their_o way_n of_o resolution_n demonstrative_a there_o will_v be_v no_o true_a faith_n and_o where_o he_o work_v with_o his_o grace_n though_o they_o be_v not_o so_o infallible_a and_o bright_a yet_o the_o adherency_n be_v firm_a the_o faith_n true_a and_o save_v therefore_o there_o appear_v no_o evident_a necessity_n of_o such_o pompous_a principle_n and_o way_n of_o resolution_n of_o our_o faith_n for_o i_o will_v only_o ask_v for_o who_o sake_n and_o on_o who_o account_n it_o be_v so_o needful_a that_o these_o motive_n principle_n and_o way_n of_o resolution_n shall_v be_v so_o infallible_o certain_a evident_a and_o necessary_a those_o that_o do_v embrace_v the_o faith_n sincere_o and_o be_v save_v or_o those_o that_o do_v not_o give_v their_o heart_n up_o to_o it_o and_o so_o perish_v in_o their_o unbelief_n as_o to_o these_o since_o beside_o all_o argument_n internal_a to_o the_o doctrine_n outward_a testimony_n the_o only_a argument_n in_o matter_n of_o fact_n and_o that_o in_o behalf_n of_o christian_n it_o be_v far_o great_a and_o more_o pregnant_a than_o there_o be_v for_o any_o other_o fact_n that_o ever_o be_v such_o as_o humane_o speak_v be_v impossible_a not_o to_o be_v true_a nor_o can_v there_o ever_o yet_o be_v find_v a_o rational_a exception_n or_o just_a ground_n of_o doubt_n against_o it_o so_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a but_o they_o must_v be_v convince_v in_o reason_n that_o it_o be_v most_o irrational_a not_o to_o assent_v those_o therefore_o that_o do_v wilful_o resist_v their_o understanding_n and_o their_o reason_n and_o withal_o god_n ordinary_a method_n of_o conviction_n and_o so_o put_v a_o bar_n against_o his_o grace_n and_o his_o spirit_n since_o much_o more_o than_o be_v enough_o be_v do_v for_o they_o they_o be_v without_o excuse_n and_o since_o they_o do_v defy_v what_o be_v more_o than_o sufficient_a in_o itself_o and_o so_o resist_v god_n method_n also_o there_o be_v no_o pretence_n or_o reason_n for_o more_o help_n of_o evidence_n on_o their_o account_n as_o for_o the_o other_o those_o that_o give_v themselves_o up_o to_o the_o guidance_n of_o their_o light_n and_o reason_n and_o almighty_a god_n conviction_n and_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o his_o holy_a spirit_n will_v do_v all_o that_o be_v needful_a to_o complete_v their_o faith_n and_o make_v it_o certain_a to_o salvation_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n on_o their_o behalf_n of_o such_o self_n evidence_n of_o principle_n and_o motive_n to_o infuse_v such_o metaphysical_a certainty_n into_o their_o faith_n and_o yet_o this_o certainty_n of_o faith_n not_o only_o be_v the_o ground_n on_o which_o alone_o be_v build_v infallibility_n wherever_o that_o be_v to_o be_v place_v for_o they_o be_v not_o agree_v about_o it_o and_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o great_a need_n to_o assure_v their_o faith_n into_o such_o certainty_n but_o beside_o poor_a we_o because_o we_o do_v not_o take_v upon_o we_o to_o assert_v dogmatical_o the_o necessity_n of_o such_o most_o infallible_a certainty_n not_o only_o be_v unchurch_v but_o unchristened_a conclude_v beyond_o all_o possibility_n of_o evasion_n not_o to_o have_v true_a faith_n nor_o be_v true_o faithful_a a_o heavy_a imputation_n therefore_o i_o crave_v leave_v a_o little_a to_o consider_v it_o in_o one_o word_n not_o desire_v to_o reflect_v on_o other_o but_o to_o justify_v ourselves_o for_o in_o truth_n god_n know_v we_o will_v as_o willing_o go_v to_o heaven_n as_o our_o neighbour_n where_o we_o know_v we_o can_v be_v receive_v without_o true_a faith_n now_o though_o it_o look_v unlucky_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v doom_v thus_o upon_o ground_n of_o which_o the_o founder_n be_v himself_o under_o censure_n for_o they_o and_o his_o book_n that_o lay_v they_o damn_v even_o by_o his_o own_o church_n though_o we_o be_v by_o virtue_n of_o their_o principle_n condemn_v as_o heretic_n because_o we_o come_v not_o into_o their_o church_n which_o condemn_v the_o founder_n of_o these_o very_a principle_n on_o their_o account_n yet_o since_o however_o any_o thing_n do_v serve_v their_o turn_n provide_v it_o condemn_v we_o it_o be_v not_o therefore_o to_o be_v pass_v by_o now_o the_o ground_n not_o only_o of_o their_o faith_n but_o this_o their_o confidence_n whereby_o they_o so_o exalt_v themselves_o and_o censure_v we_o be_v the_o absolute_a certainty_n of_o the_o live_a voice_n and_o practice_n of_o that_o church_n which_o resolve_v her_o faith_n by_o this_o rule_n or_o principle_n not_o to_o believe_v or_o teach_v or_o practice_v any_o thing_n as_o of_o faith_n but_o what_o
testimony_n be_v assure_v and_o certain_a so_o far_o they_o must_v grant_v the_o faith_n we_o give_v that_o that_o writing_n be_v the_o rule_n must_v be_v assure_v and_o certain_a and_o since_o all_o the_o mean_n and_o kind_n of_o their_o tradition_n make_v that_o very_a testimony_n and_o conveyance_n of_o that_o book_n therefore_o all_o that_o certainty_n and_o that_o infallibility_n their_o faith_n can_v have_v from_o those_o ground_n the_o same_o certainty_n and_o infallibility_n the_o faith_n we_o give_v to_o that_o book_n must_v needs_o have_v too_o on_o their_o own_o ground_n but_o it_o have_v more_o for_o since_o the_o ground_n of_o all_o faith_n must_v be_v testimony_n and_o by_o consequence_n none_o but_o divine_a testimony_n can_v be_v ground_n sufficient_a for_o divine_a faith_n and_o that_o testimony_n be_v i_o show_v you_o miracle_n wrought_v by_o the_o publisher_n to_o confirm_v the_o doctrine_n both_o which_o be_v in_o this_o rule_n of_o we_o therefore_o although_o that_o universal_a testimony_n all_o their_o tradition_n for_o it_o which_o be_v mere_o humane_a may_v be_v a_o sufficient_a method_n of_o conveyance_n to_o derive_v all_o notice_n as_o the_o first_o man_n eye_n and_o ear_n that_o see_v the_o miracle_n and_o hear_v christ_n though_o they_o be_v but_o humane_a sense_n be_v sufficient_a to_o they_o also_o they_o suffice_v not_o yet_o to_o a_o divine_a belief_n they_o can_v ground_v that_o faith_n which_o must_v be_v give_v to_o divine_a supernatural_a doctrine_n upon_o a_o divine_a testimony_n which_o tradition_n be_v not_o but_o our_o rule_n have_v so_o that_o the_o resolution_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v make_v by_o a_o divine_a rule_n such_o as_o they_o pretend_v not_o to_o be_v make_v by_o and_o the_o mere_a conveyance_n of_o that_o rule_n to_o we_o have_v all_o that_o certainty_n and_o that_o infallibility_n that_o they_o pretend_v their_o rule_n itself_o to_o have_v and_o so_o we_o may_v have_v faith_n and_o may_v be_v christian_n but_o we_o be_v never_o the_o near_o however_o for_o if_o the_o rule_n of_o faith_n if_o true_a must_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o make_v our_o assent_n more_o infallible_a than_o science_n upon_o demonstration_n and_o there_o can_v be_v no_o other_o such_o rule_n beside_o the_o live_a voice_n and_o present_a practice_n of_o that_o church_n which_o do_v and_o always_o do_v resolve_v her_o faith_n into_o it_o by_o this_o principle_n not_o to_o believe_v or_o teach_v or_o practice_v any_o thing_n as_o of_o faith_n but_o what_o they_o do_v receive_v from_o their_o immediate_a forefather_n as_o of_o faith_n and_o see_v their_o practice_n of_o which_o most_o undeniable_o render_v their_o faith_n impossible_a to_o be_v erroneous_a therefore_o we_o that_o own_v neither_o such_o a_o resolution_n rule_n or_o principle_n can_v neither_o have_v true_a rule_n nor_o faith_n but_o yet_o how_o fine_a soever_o and_o self-evident_a this_o principle_n and_o resolution_n appear_v to_o they_o as_o speculator_n if_o it_o be_v practical_o inquire_v into_o it_o will_v appear_v the_o weak_a of_o all_o other_o for_o first_o i_o may_v evince_v that_o ever_o since_o the_o first_o beginning_n of_o religion_n and_o mankind_n while_o either_o they_o have_v no_o other_o rule_n at_o all_o but_o this_o of_o oral_n practical_a tradition_n as_o in_o the_o first_o time_n before_o the_o law_n be_v give_v and_o scripture_n write_v their_o faith_n and_o practice_n grow_v all_o false_a and_o diabolical_a or_o when_o they_o have_v another_o rule_n so_o far_o as_o they_o make_v use_v of_o this_o rule_n thereby_o that_o they_o do_v make_v void_a their_o own_o faith_n and_o god_n law_n as_o the_o pharisee_n among_o the_o jew_n or_o last_o when_o they_o have_v not_o a_o entire_a rule_n write_v as_o in_o the_o first_o age_n of_o christianity_n while_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o spread_v among_o believer_n but_o they_o have_v the_o live_n and_o inspire_v voice_n of_o the_o apostle_n to_o resolve_v their_o faith_n into_o and_o by_o that_o rule_n and_o principle_n of_o oral_a practical_a tradition_n most_o perfect_o yet_o then_o the_o most_o execrable_a heresy_n that_o ever_o infest_a the_o church_n have_v their_o rise_n and_o growth_n second_o i_o may_v demonstrate_v their_o church_n do_v not_o always_o so_o resolve_v their_o faith_n and_o by_o that_o principle_n look_v through_o their_o council_n all_o from_o the_o beginning_n where_o their_o church_n sometime_o the_o whole_a church_n meet_v together_o either_o to_o confirm_v the_o true_a faith_n or_o confound_v the_o false_a and_o you_o shall_v find_v no_o footstep_n of_o this_o oral_n practical_a tradition_n but_o of_o doctrinal_a enough_o the_o say_n of_o the_o father_n and_o decree_n of_o former_a council_n and_o the_o text_n of_o scripture_n these_o they_o call_v their_o demonstration_n three_o where_o there_o be_v most_o need_n still_o of_o a_o certain_a rule_n and_o resolution_n there_o this_o be_v unpracticable_a whole_o namely_o in_o all_o great_a division_n of_o the_o church_n in_o point_n of_o faith_n to_o instance_n in_o the_o arrian_n contention_n where_o the_o world_n be_v against_o st_n athanasius_n and_o st_n athanasius_n against_o the_o world_n and_o the_o pope_n himself_o liberius_n be_v then_o arrian_n who_o can_v then_o hear_v and_o distinguish_v the_o live_a voice_n of_o the_o church_n when_o the_o whole_a east_n be_v so_o universal_o and_o bloody_o divide_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o image_n one_o greek_a council_n define_v against_o they_o and_o another_o they_o have_v receive_v it_o too_o from_o their_o forefather_n nor_o ask_v how_o it_o be_v possible_a their_o enemy_n shall_v not_o mind_v they_o of_o it_o if_o it_o be_v the_o church_n rule_n and_o have_v be_v general_o teach_v and_o practise_v and_o assure_v they_o by_o their_o principle_n how_o impossible_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v erroneous_a but_o there_o be_v not_o a_o word_n of_o this_o in_o the_o whole_a two_o nicene_n council_n but_o some_o text_n of_o scripture_n and_o some_o say_n of_o the_o father_n which_o no_o more_o evince_v the_o practice_n than_o tentordin_n steeple_n do_v cause_n goodwin_n sands_n but_o i_o will_v ask_v how_o in_o the_o noise_n and_o the_o confusion_n of_o both_o state_n and_o church_n while_o war_n and_o anathemas_n thunder_v in_o the_o quarrel_n how_o it_o be_v possible_a poor_a soul_n can_v hear_v and_o distinguish_v what_o the_o live_a voice_n and_o present_a practice_n of_o that_o age_n be_v which_o be_v so_o extreme_o various_a and_o contradictory_n those_o that_o be_v then_o to_o be_v instruct_v in_o the_o faith_n what_o can_v they_o hearken_v to_o how_o can_v they_o guide_v themselves_o by_o that_o rule_n when_o as_o in_o their_o doctrine_n they_o condemn_v each_o other_o in_o their_o practice_n murder_v one_o another_o and_o when_o each_o party_n plead_v that_o they_o be_v the_o faith_n deliver_v to_o they_o which_o shall_v they_o believe_v the_o major_a party_n how_o shall_v they_o know_v infallible_o which_o be_v how_o be_v assure_v the_o major_a party_n be_v require_v why_o truth_n must_v be_v on_o that_o side_n where_o the_o most_o be_v what_o self-evident_a rule_n have_v they_o to_o judge_v of_o these_o by_o sure_o none_o according_o it_o be_v not_o by_o this_o rule_n but_o by_o be_v overpower_v they_o receive_v that_o faith_n and_o practice_n four_o that_o it_o may_v appear_v in_o no_o case_n useful_a in_o the_o calm_a sunshine_n of_o the_o church_n and_o when_o if_o ever_o they_o be_v all_o of_o one_o mind_n namely_o before_o luther_n when_o if_o ever_o there_o be_v any_o article_n that_o the_o latin_a church_n be_v possess_v of_o a_o explicit_a belief_n of_o it_o be_v that_o of_o purgatory_n as_o it_o be_v now_o hold_v among_o they_o there_o be_v all_o express_v of_o a_o oral_a practical_a tradition_n for_o it_o and_o if_o there_o be_v not_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o know_v when_o any_o doctrine_n be_v receive_v upon_o that_o principle_n so_o that_o the_o rule_n be_v frivolous_a as_o to_o practise_v yet_o as_o if_o that_o principle_n have_v owe_v the_o very_a founder_n of_o it_o a_o great_a spite_n he_o must_v go_v write_v a_o book_n against_o that_o purgatory_n which_o stand_v by_o his_o own_o principle_n for_o which_o he_o be_v under_o censure_n by_o his_o own_o church_n but_o least_o
come_v along_o to_o they_o by_o the_o way_n of_o oral_a practical_a tradition_n if_o it_o do_v it_o be_v not_o a_o sure_a infallible_a rule_n of_o convey_v faith_n if_o it_o do_v not_o than_o that_o church_n do_v not_o still_o receive_v their_o faith_n upon_o that_o rule_n and_o principle_n or_o by_o that_o method_n though_o that_o they_o do_v so_o be_v their_o first_o great_a principle_n and_o the_o great_a master_n of_o that_o scheme_n assure_v his_o holiness_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o maintain_v their_o doctrine_n otherwise_o against_o the_o subtlety_n of_o the_o english_a whether_o of_o the_o church_n or_o the_o succession_n of_o their_o doctrine_n by_o that_o way_n of_o practical_a tradition_n and_o that_o be_v the_o infallible_a most_o necessary_a certainty_n of_o faith_n but_o i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o to_o this_o than_o what_o the_o grand_a abettor_n of_o the_o principle_n have_v say_v in_o answer_n to_o himself_o object_v what_o be_v to_o be_v say_v to_o they_o that_o can_v not_o penetrate_v into_o his_o demonstration_n see_v the_o force_n and_o evidence_n of_o that_o rule_n and_o principle_n and_o yet_o have_v that_o faith_n that_o be_v necessary_a to_o salvation_n i_o shall_v give_v it_o you_o in_o his_o own_o word_n as_o near_o as_o i_o can_v put_v they_o into_o english_a he_o say_v there_o be_v a_o certainty_n derive_v into_o the_o understanding_n of_o these_o man_n out_o of_o their_o will_n for_o since_o they_o think_v themselves_o assure_v these_o truth_n be_v bring_v down_o by_o the_o church_n from_o christ_n to_o they_o &_o objection_n to_o which_o curious_a wit_n be_v subject_n and_o whether_o the_o man_n see_v that_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n which_o he_o follow_v be_v of_o more_o force_n at_o least_o to_o he_o than_o particular_a objection_n in_o those_o truth_n or_o whether_o he_o think_v nothing_o at_o all_o of_o it_o but_o rest_v steadfast_a in_o that_o assent_n which_o his_o very_a ignorance_n cause_v it_o be_v plain_a he_o have_v a_o certainty_n of_o will_n which_o in_o its_o way_n extend_v itself_o to_o the_o government_n of_o his_o whole_a life_n answerable_o to_o that_o his_o persuasion_n and_o by_o consequence_n he_o have_v a_o certainty_n exclusive_a of_o all_o doubt_n and_o such_o as_o move_v he_o to_o direct_v his_o action_n all_o to_o god_n that_o be_v there_o be_v in_o he_o that_o faith_n which_o work_v by_o love_n so_o he_o now_o hence_o it_o be_v evident_a by_o his_o concession_n first_o that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o save_a faith_n which_o have_v not_o that_o infallible_a certainty_n arise_v from_o the_o motive_n guide_n or_o principle_n or_o way_n of_o resolution_n and_o that_o second_o a_o certainty_n derive_v into_o the_o understanding_n from_o a_o will_n that_o be_v pious_o dispose_v suffice_v three_o that_o there_o be_v this_o certainty_n where_o the_o will_v firm_o cleave_v and_o adhere_v to_o god_n rely_v on_o he_o with_o a_o vigorous_a hope_n and_o trust_v direct_v all_o the_o action_n up_o to_o god_n and_o to_o his_o service_n and_o persevere_v in_o it_o to_o the_o life_n end_n now_o this_o be_v all_o that_o i_o be_o all_o this_o while_n contend_v for_o it_o be_v not_o by_o self-evident_a or_o demonstrative_a method_n or_o by_o a_o infallible_a guide_n that_o he_o provide_v against_o man_n unbelief_n but_o when_o with_o preparation_n like_o our_o man_n here_o in_o the_o text_n in_o weep_v earnest_o we_o betake_v ourselves_o to_o he_o cry_v out_o for_o help_n and_o direction_n and_o apply_v our_o understanding_n meek_o to_o attend_v his_o method_n he_o dispose_v pious_o the_o will_n to_o entertain_v the_o gracious_a bless_a proposal_n of_o the_o gospel_n with_o complacency_n and_o heartiness_n and_o from_o converse_v with_o the_o experience_n of_o they_o to_o prefer_v they_o before_o all_o worldly_a carnal_a thing_n that_o use_v to_o bait_v our_o lust_n ravish_v our_o heart_n and_o carry_v we_o away_o we_o have_v faith_n while_o we_o do_v not_o cling_v to_o and_o adhere_v but_o depart_v from_o he_o lord_n help_v thou_o this_o our_o unbelief_n and_o if_o his_o grace_n but_o once_o dispose_v we_o to_o prefer_v the_o bless_a expectation_n of_o a_o christian_a he_o do_v easy_o prevail_v with_o we_o to_o cling_v to_o they_o with_o such_o certain_a assurance_n as_o will_v carry_v we_o through_o
