trial_n this_o rule_n say_v some_o in_o effect_n be_v idle_a because_o it_o pretend_v that_o man_n may_v try_v their_o faith_n by_o it_o but_o indeed_o no_o man_n can_v for_o say_v they_o all_o man_n be_v either_o regenerate_v or_o unregenerate_a there_o be_v no_o three_o condition_n betwixt_o they_o and_o different_a from_o they_o and_o neither_o the_o one_o nor_o the_o other_o can_v try_v their_o faith_n by_o this_o rule_n not_o the_o regenerate_a because_o there_o be_v no_o gift_n power_n quality_n disposition_n habit_n or_o affection_n other_o then_o save_v faith_n that_o be_v or_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o preparative_n to_o regeneration_n neither_o can_v unregenerate_v meâ—_n try_v their_o faith_n because_o there_o be_v no_o gift_n in_o man_n unregenerate_a whereby_o themselves_o or_o other_o can_v difference_n they_o from_o those_o that_o remain_v in_o their_o natural_a estate_n and_o that_o shall_v perish_v for_o ever_o the_o apology_n for_o the_o trial_n i_o answer_v first_o general_o to_o both_o regenerate_a and_o unregenerate_a that_o though_o by_o their_o exception_n they_o seem_v to_o give_v two_o different_a reason_n one_o for_o the_o regenerate_a and_o another_o for_o the_o unregenerate_a yet_o the_o reason_n belong_v to_o all_o equal_o because_o it_o deny_v either_o to_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o all_z or_o any_o preparation_n before_o faith_n or_o regeneration_n either_o to_o difference_n the_o regenerate_a from_o the_o unregenerate_a or_o one_o unregenerate_a man_n from_o another_o for_o ever_o second_o i_o answer_v to_o their_o reason_n concern_v the_o regenerate_v that_o it_o be_v of_o no_o force_n why_o they_o may_v not_o try_v their_o faith_n by_o this_o rule_n because_o it_o affirm_v that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o preparation_n at_o all_o to_o regeneration_n but_o faith_n itself_o which_o can_v be_v true_a because_o a_o belief_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v a_o steadfast_a assent_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o regeneration_n and_o therefore_o may_v a_o regenerate_a man_n try_v himself_o by_o some_o other_o gift_n then_o by_o a_o save_a faith_n as_o by_o a_o preparation_n to_o regeneration_n and_o consequent_o try_v his_o faith_n by_o this_o rule_n three_o i_o answer_v touch_v the_o unregenerate_a that_o their_o reason_n be_v unsufficient_a why_o they_o may_v not_o try_v their_o faith_n by_o this_o rule_n because_o though_o they_o have_v not_o a_o save_a faith_n as_o indeed_o they_o have_v not_o yet_o may_v it_o not_o be_v in_o vain_a for_o they_o to_o examine_v themselves_o concern_v a_o slue_a faith_n by_o these_o preparation_n for_o they_o may_v think_v they_o have_v it_o when_o indeed_o they_o have_v not_o and_o so_o may_v deceive_v themselves_o with_o a_o vain_a presumptuous_a hope_n of_o salvation_n now_o by_o this_o trial_n with_o these_o preparation_n they_o shall_v clear_o discern_v they_o have_v it_o not_o for_o he_o that_o be_v far_o from_o the_o preparation_n to_o faith_n must_v needs_o be_v further_o of_o from_o faith_n itself_o he_o that_o have_v not_o the_o lesser_a which_o be_v more_o common_a have_v not_o the_o great_a which_o be_v more_o rare_a whereupon_o they_o may_v be_v occasion_v consider_v the_o danger_n of_o be_v without_o faith_n and_o the_o benefit_n of_o have_v it_o to_o seek_v in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n for_o it_o and_o by_o seek_v to_o find_v and_o obtain_v it_o may_v not_o a_o man_n try_v whether_o he_o have_v a_o good_a lease_n or_o no_o if_o he_o have_v any_o lease_n at_o all_o though_o his_o lease_n be_v not_o good_a yea_o if_o he_o have_v any_o writing_n which_o he_o take_v to_o be_v a_o lease_n though_o it_o be_v not_o may_v he_o not_o try_v whether_o he_o have_v a_o good_a lease_n or_o no_o beside_o though_o unregenerate_a man_n have_v no_o such_o gift_n whereby_o they_o may_v be_v difference_v from_o such_o as_o remain_v in_o their_o natural_a estate_n and_o shall_v perish_v for_o ever_o yeâ—_n some_o good_a reasoâ—_n why_o there_o can_v be_v no_o preparation_n at_o all_o to_o faith_n in_o christ_n then_o have_v they_o speak_v to_o purpose_n against_o my_o rule_n but_o see_v they_o have_v not_o do_v it_o therefore_o be_v the_o rule_n good_a for_o the_o purpose_n to_o which_o i_o intend_v it_o for_o all_o their_o exception_n four_o touch_v the_o proof_n of_o their_o exception_n viz_o can_v be_v because_o no_o man_n can_v believe_v in_o this_o manner_n absolute_o but_o he_o to_o who_o such_o mercy_n be_v absolute_o promise_v now_o in_o the_o word_n there_o be_v mercy_n promise_v to_o none_o but_o under_o the_o condition_n of_o repentance_n and_o faith_n in_o christ_n nor_o be_v this_o mercy_n promise_v in_o special_a and_o particular_a but_o in_o general_a to_o all_o
