to_o handle_v to_o you_o concern_v it_o first_o to_o show_v you_o that_o the_o supreme_a and_o high_a and_o original_a account_n or_o description_n of_o faith_n be_v to_o be_v take_v by_o its_o faith_n must_v needs_o live_v and_o die_v with_o he_o as_o i_o may_v so_o express_v it_o in_o familiar_a language_n it_o be_v as_o essential_a to_o faith_n to_o have_v the_o manifestation_n and_o upon_o some_o great_a good_a that_o be_v offer_v to_o we_o from_o the_o supreme_a good_a that_o we_o have_v no_o right_a nor_o title_n to_o in_o ourselves_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v that_o great_a and_o rich_a good_a that_o be_v give_v to_o we_o from_o the_o father_n and_o that_o though_o we_o have_v no_o right_n to_o the_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o yet_o we_o come_v to_o trust_v and_o to_o depend_v and_o to_o rely_v upon_o it_o as_o if_o we_o have_v a_o title_n and_o then_o in_o the_o three_o place_n whereas_o faith_n be_v very_o true_o though_o not_o in_o the_o first_o account_n of_o it_o describe_v to_o be_v a_o power_n

it_o be_v certain_a here_o be_v the_o oriency_n of_o the_o gospel_n here_o be_v the_o pearl_n of_o great_a price_n jesus_n christ_n and_o our_o soul_n shall_v close_v with_o and_o cling_v to_o he_o now_o because_o there_o be_v a_o fog_n and_o mist_n about_o these_o thing_n how_o earnest_o shall_v we_o pray_v for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o then_o these_o thing_n will_v come_v into_o their_o glory_n into_o their_o beauty_n into_o their_o perfection_n and_o therefore_o i_o say_v if_o we_o love_v christ_n our_o soul_n shall_v earnest_o desire_v that_o this_o kingdom_n of_o say_v faith_n indeed_o be_v of_o great_a holiness_n and_o of_o great_a operation_n but_o it_o take_v hold_v of_o christ_n only_o by_o way_n of_o receipt_n and_o dependence_n and_o so_o we_o be_v name_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n may_v be_v glorify_v in_o you_o and_o you_o in_o he_o here_o you_o see_v it_o be_v very_o plain_a that_o the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n it_o demonstrate_v the_o truth_n of_o faith_n and_o glorify_v the_o name_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n in_o believer_n and_o believer_n in_o he_o according_a to_o the_o grace_n of_o our_o god_n and_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n methinks_v this_o very_a expression_n it_o shall_v silence_v all_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n and_o of_o justification_n by_o free_a grace_n for_o here_o be_v as_o high_o speak_v of_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n as_o all_o the_o understanding_n of_o man_n can_v possible_o reach_v to_o either_o to_o conceive_v or_o to_o express_v what_o can_v be_v great_a than_o the_o glorify_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o believer_n and_o believer_n be_v glorify_v in_o he_o and_o yet_o all_o this_o throw_v off_o quite_o from_o any_o thing_n of_o man_n or_o redundancy_n by_o way_n of_o glory_n upon_o man._n it_o be_v say_v according_a to_o the_o grace_n of_o our_o god_n and_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n i_o shall_v now_o close_v these_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v speak_v thus_o narrow_o to_o you_o i_o hope_v god_n will_v enlarge_v they_o in_o your_o heart_n in_o these_o three_o full_a height_n and_o excellency_n o_o do_v but_o take_v these_o two_o thing_n along_o which_o can_v never_o divide_v nor_o deceive_v 1._o all_o be_v grace_n and_o yet_o 2._o grace_n be_v mighty_a in_o its_o operation_n and_o indeed_o though_o we_o have_v reason_n to_o lie_v low_a because_o grace_n as_o in_o we_o seem_v so_o short_a and_o narrow_a in_o its_o operation_n yet_o these_o be_v two_o thing_n that_o can_v never_o be_v disjoin_v they_o be_v one_o within_o another_o it_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o bring_v forth_o the_o holiness_n and_o keep_v it_o in_o union_n to_o christ_n by_o the_o father_n so_o that_o there_o be_v certain_o a_o sight_n of_o christ_n i_o say_v a_o sight_n of_o the_o son_n in_o faith_n and_o if_o we_o do_v but_o thus_o consider_v the_o excellency_n of_o faith_n indeed_o i_o can_v but_o apprehend_v there_o can_v be_v no_o difference_n between_o christian_n and_o christian_n in_o these_o point_n concern_v faith_n and_o so_o concern_v apostle_n say_v it_o be_v the_o faith_n of_o god_n power_n it_o be_v the_o like_a precious_a faith_n but_o if_o you_o take_v away_o christ_n from_o it_o alas_o it_o be_v nothing_o at_o all_o all_o its_o excellency_n be_v in_o its_o union_n to_o christ_n i_o speak_v this_o that_o i_o will_v not_o in_o the_o least_o seem_v to_o quarrel_v or_o to_o raise_v a_o controversy_n with_o any_o holy_a because_o it_o obey_v as_o it_o be_v very_o true_a it_o do_v and_o because_o it_o purify_v the_o heart_n and_o life_n and_o lay_v argument_n and_o engagement_n of_o obedience_n i_o do_v deny_v any_o thing_n of_o this_o but_o desire_v to_o speak_v the_o same_o thing_n but_o i_o still_o affirm_v that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v mistake_v in_o faith_n for_o this_o be_v not_o its_o excellency_n no_o more_o than_o it_o be_v the_o eye_n excellency_n that_o it_o be_v curious_o make_v whereas_o it_o will_v be_v nothing_o no_o not_o so_o much_o a_o beauty_n if_o it_o be_v not_o for_o light_n it_o be_v all_o one_o as_o if_o a_o man_n be_v blind_a or_o have_v no_o eye_n so_o it_o be_v all_o one_o if_o it_o be_v not_o for_o christ_n whether_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o faith_n or_o no_o such_o thing_n as_o faith_n it_o be_v of_o no_o value_n or_o account_v if_o it_o be_v not_o for_o he_o and_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o keep_v all_o this_o strict_o in_o your_o thought_n faith_n be_v excellent_a why_o because_o christ_n be_v excellent_a and_o it_o have_v to_o do_v with_o he_o it_o have_v a_o great_a many_o subordination_n of_o excellency_n on_o this_o side_n christ_n but_o speak_v yet_o more_o plain_a to_o our_o apprehension_n if_o any_o one_o will_v give_v we_o a_o gift_n before_o we_o come_v to_o be_v real_o invest_v in_o that_o gift_n we_o must_v take_v it_o and_o have_v it_o in_o possession_n and_o we_o have_v not_o a_o true_a title_n to_o it_o else_o though_o it_o do_v not_o depend_v upon_o our_o take_n but_o it_o be_v only_o a_o consummative_a and_o perfect_a thing_n that_o we_o take_v it_o into_o our_o possession_n we_o accept_v it_o from_o the_o giver_n as_o his_o gift_n and_o we_o take_v it_o into_o possession_n as_o our_o own_o and_o thus_o i_o say_v it_o be_v and_o that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o it_o seem_v to_o i_o except_o any_o one_o shall_v show_v i_o wherein_o i_o be_o in_o a_o mistake_n in_o thus_o say_v i_o shall_v conclude_v it_o to_o be_v the_o very_a sense_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o all_o those_o expression_n that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n and_o live_v by_o faith_n these_o thing_n i_o say_v show_v to_o we_o the_o worthlessness_n of_o faith_n in_o itself_o and_o yet_o that_o it_o be_v consummative_a and_o a_o consummation_n of_o our_o title_n to_o christ_n and_o to_o his_o righteousness_n i_o will_v only_o first_o answer_n one_o more_o seem_v great_a objection_n against_o this_o representation_n of_o faith_n i_o have_v give_v as_o if_o it_o be_v only_o the_o imprint_v of_o christ_n gift_n of_o himself_o and_o his_o righteousness_n to_o the_o soul_n why_o be_v it_o then_o so_o often_o say_v repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n and_o whoever_o believe_v in_o he_o he_o may_v redeem_v we_o from_o all_o iniquity_n and_o purify_v unto_o himself_o a_o peculiar_a people_n zealous_a of_o good_a work_n all_o the_o good_a work_n of_o faith_n there_o be_v a_o purchase_n and_o to_o give_v occasion_n to_o so_o many_o enemy_n of_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n and_o to_o so_o many_o divine_v and_o strange_a kind_n of_o representation_n of_o this_o great_a truth_n by_o man_n in_o all_o age_n bear_v up_o themselves_o upon_o the_o authority_n of_o such_o a_o place_n of_o scripture_n as_o this_o be_v now_o therefore_o by_o way_n of_o answer_n to_o it_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v long_o although_o the_o thing_n require_v indeed_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o thought_n and_o consideration_n and_o i_o hope_v god_n will_v enable_v i_o to_o give_v it_o in_o sum_n though_o i_o can_v speak_v so_o large_a of_o it_o the_o first_o thing_n i_o desire_v you_o to_o consider_v be_v that_o certain_o upon_o this_o great_a point_n i_o be_o very_o clear_a in_o it_o we_o be_v call_v to_o consider_v that_o if_o we_o speak_v indeed_o strict_o and_o downright_o to_o the_o point_n a_o man_n be_v no_o more_o justify_v by_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v a_o grace_n or_o a_o act_n or_o a_o work_n or_o whatsoever_o you_o call_v it_o in_o itself_o i_o say_v no_o more_o justify_v by_o it_o than_o he_o be_v by_o work_n certain_o god_n will_v have_v we_o fetch_v about_o every_o way_n and_o consider_v how_o this_o can_v be_v that_o the_o apostle_n james_n can_v seem_v so_o to_o contradict_v the_o apostle_n paul_n now_o the_o first_o thing_n that_o offer_v itself_o to_o we_o be_v that_o a_o man_n be_v not_o indeed_o justify_v by_o faith_n upon_o any_o merit_n excellency_n or_o worth_n or_o desert_n that_o be_v in_o faith_n itself_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o if_o faith_n shall_v pretend_v to_o it_o it_o will_v be_v throw_v like_o lucifer_n out_o of_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o by_o faith_n in_o itself_o and_o then_o second_o i_o do_v believe_v that_o in_o the_o same_o sense_n wherein_o faith_n be_v say_v to_o be_v justify_v in_o dependence_n upon_o the_o righteousness_n of_o chriâ—t_n in_o the_o same_o sense_n work_n may_v be_v say_v to_o justify_v in_o dependence_n upon_o faith_n pray_v observe_v what_o i_o say_v i_o say_v faith_n justify_v in_o dependence_n upon_o christ_n and_o work_n may_v be_v say_v to_o justify_v in_o dependence_n upon_o faith_n for_o in_o the_o same_o degree_n wherein_o faith_n stand_v to_o christ_n for_o righteousness_n in_o the_o same_o degree_n may_v work_n stand_v to_o faith_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o justification_n so_o that_o work_v depend_v upon_o faith_n and_o that_o depend_v whole_o upon_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o if_o this_o be_v serious_o consider_v it_o will_v clear_v to_o you_o what_o else_o may_v seem_v a_o very_a great_a doubt_n now_o therefore_o to_o lay_v down_o plain_o my_o sense_n of_o the_o apostle_n scope_n of_o be_v justify_v by_o work_n and_o not_o by_o faith_n only_o there_o be_v these_o three_o sense_n in_o which_o it_o may_v be_v understand_v and_o i_o shall_v make_v out_o every_o one_o to_o you_o by_o plain_a expression_n of_o the_o apostle_n james_n and_o yet_o very_o brief_o leave_v it_o especial_o to_o your_o own_o meditation_n and_o thought_n upon_o it_o the_o first_o be_v this_o that_o wherever_o a_o man_n be_v suppose_v by_o the_o apostle_n james_n to_o be_v justify_v by_o work_n and_o not_o by_o faith_n only_o it_o be_v because_o faith_n and_o work_n have_v a_o kind_n of_o hypostatical_a union_n a_o personal_a union_n so_o that_o to_o say_v faith_n and_o work_v be_v to_o say_v no_o more_o than_o to_o say_v whole_a faith_n entire_a faith_n for_o if_o faith_n have_v not_o work_n it_o be_v false_a faith_n it_o be_v counterfeit_n faith_n it_o be_v not_o whole_a entire_a true_a faith_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n mean_v nothing_o more_o by_o it_o than_o only_o that_o if_o you_o will_v know_v what_o faith_n you_o be_v justify_v by_o it_o be_v faith_n that_o have_v a_o mighty_a power_n of_o operation_n or_o work_n and_o therefore_o i_o understand_v no_o more_o by_o the_o apostle_n james_n speak_v of_o work_n join_v with_o faith_n than_o the_o apostle_n paul_n say_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n with_o power_n faith_n have_v a_o mighty_a power_n of_o work_v by_o faith_n they_o do_v so_o and_o so_o all_o along_o heb_fw-mi 11._o this_o be_v through_o faith_n a_o mighty_a operate_n work_a faith_n and_o when_o jesus_n christ_n give_v himself_o he_o always_o give_v a_o operate_a faith_n so_o he_o give_v himself_o only_o to_o a_o faith_n that_o he_o know_v have_v mighty_a power_n and_o principle_n of_o operation_n it_o be_v because_o it_o be_v true_a faith_n whole_a faith_n entire_a faith_n the_o faith_n of_o god_n give_v like_o precious_a faith_n as_o you_o know_v in_o a_o jewel_n if_o it_o be_v only_o a_o counterfeit_n it_o want_v some_o of_o the_o essential_a excellency_n of_o a_o jewel_n as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v think_v to_o be_v make_v rich_a by_o a_o false_a jewel_n it_o be_v a_o false_a counterfeit_a appearance_n though_o it_o may_v have_v some_o appearance_n of_o a_o true_a stone_n yet_o it_o want_v the_o true_a exccellency_n and_o value_n of_o it_o so_o the_o apostle_n discourse_n and_o show_v what_o a_o true_a real_a work_v justify_v operate_a faith_n be_v james_z 2._o 16._o if_o a_o brother_n or_o sister_n be_v naked_a and_o destitute_a of_o daily_a food_n and_o one_o of_o you_o say_v unto_o he_o depart_v in_o peace_n be_v you_o warm_v and_o fill_v notwithstanding_o you_o give_v they_o not_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v needful_a for_o the_o body_n you_o know_v this_o be_v a_o false_a charity_n and_o so_o it_o be_v a_o false_a faith_n that_o pretend_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o can_v act_v suitable_o and_o again_o he_o faith_n as_o the_o body_n without_o the_o spirit_n be_v dead_a so_o faith_n without_o work_n be_v dead_a also_o now_o if_o we_o shall_v make_v a_o dead_a man_n set_v his_o hand_n to_o a_o write_n you_o know_v that_o write_n be_v of_o no_o value_n though_o you_o may_v guide_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o dead_a man_n to_o write_v so_o and_o so_o while_o you_o guide_v the_o hand_n because_o he_o be_v a_o man_n without_o spirit_n he_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man._n and_o so_o faith_n if_o it_o have_v not_o all_o the_o grace_n and_o action_n suitable_a to_o it_o it_o be_v but_o a_o dead_a faith_n it_o be_v dead_a as_o the_o apostle_n say_v and_o it_o be_v but_o the_o faith_n of_o devil_n it_o be_v not_o a_o perfect_a faith_n it_o have_v not_o true_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v not_o as_o i_o may_v the_o whole_a person_n of_o faith_n this_o be_v the_o first_o sense_n the_o apostle_n aim_v and_o drive_v at_o to_o distinguish_v true_a faith_n from_o a_o mere_a formal_a professionary_a faith_n say_v as_o man_n do_v i_o believe_v in_o one_o god_n the_o father_n almighty_a and_o so_o you_o know_v they_o go_v on_o now_o a_o mere_a profession_n of_o faith_n without_o the_o power_n of_o faith_n in_o a_o man_n soul_n it_o be_v but_o the_o counterfeit_a image_n of_o faith_n and_o not_o faith_n itself_o so_o james_n say_v thou_o believe_v there_o be_v one_o god_n etc._n etc._n in_o this_o second_o place_n this_o indeed_o be_v the_o way_n that_o god_n do_v general_o demonstrate_v and_o manifest_v the_o truth_n of_o faith_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o believer_n and_o to_o the_o observation_n of_o other_o and_o so_o it_o be_v true_a that_o faith_n can_v demonstrate_v itself_o either_o to_o a_o believer_n soul_n or_o in_o ordinary_a and_o general_a speak_v it_o can_v manifest_v itself_o except_o it_o have_v work_n and_o so_o that_o sense_n that_o some_o interpreter_n give_v of_o this_o discourse_n of_o the_o apostle_n here_o be_v that_o one_o faith_n justify_v before_o god_n and_o the_o other_o justify_v before_o man_n that_o be_v faith_n in_o its_o work_n justify_v before_o man_n but_o faith_n alone_o taking_z christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n before_o god_n though_o it_o be_v always_o a_o faith_n that_o have_v within_o itself_o such_o a_o power_n of_o action_n as_o to_o demonstrate_v itself_o to_o man_n or_o else_o it_o be_v but_o a_o dead_a faith_n and_o a_o vain_a man_n it_o be_v that_o look_v upon_o a_o faith_n to_o be_v faith_n that_o have_v not_o this_o mighty_a operation_n and_o so_o the_o apostle_n say_v faith_n wrought_v with_o work_n he_o do_v not_o say_v his_o work_n be_v alone_o but_o faith_n wrought_v
