he_o shall_v give_v eternal_a life_n three_o the_o object_n of_o this_o dispensation_n or_o the_o person_n to_o who_o this_o life_n here_o mention_v be_v to_o be_v dispense_v and_o that_o be_v not_o and_o here_o let_v we_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o of_o the_o adjunct_n of_o it_o first_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o it_o be_v life_n then_o of_o the_o adjunct_n of_o it_o it_o be_v life_n eternal_a as_o for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o my_o brethren_n you_o must_v know_v that_o natural_o and_o original_o we_o be_v all_o dead_a man_n we_o be_v all_o dead_a bear_v we_o come_v into_o the_o world_n my_o brethren_n in_o a_o state_n of_o death_n and_o condemnation_n and_o in_o this_o sad_a condition_n we_o continue_v of_o ourselves_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o put_v life_n into_o ourselves_o no_o we_o can_v no_o more_o raise_v ourselves_o to_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n than_o a_o dead_a man_n can_v raise_v himself_o to_o the_o life_n of_o nature_n and_o therefore_o god_n because_o he_o will_v have_v such_o a_o number_n quicken_v as_o he_o have_v resolve_v upon_o have_v give_v power_n to_o jesus_n christ_n to_o this_o end_n and_o to_o this_o purpose_n that_o he_o may_v give_v life_n to_o those_o who_o of_o themselves_o be_v utter_o void_a of_o it_o and_o no_o way_n able_a to_o attain_v it_o and_o that_o his_o mercy_n may_v be_v full_a he_o have_v appoint_v he_o to_o give_v they_o such_o a_o life_n as_o be_v uncapable_a of_o dissolution_n the_o life_n that_o adam_n in_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n enjoy_v the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n and_o the_o life_n of_o holiness_n you_o know_v be_v perishable_a in_o itself_o and_o so_o according_o be_v leave_v of_o god_n his_o state_n in_o this_o condition_n be_v mutable_a and_o according_o he_o fall_v from_o it_o from_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o life_n to_o a_o state_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n but_o now_o god_n have_v invest_v jesus_n christ_n with_o power_n to_o give_v his_o people_n such_o a_o life_n as_o shall_v be_v durable_a as_o shall_v in_o this_o respect_n transcend_v the_o life_n that_o adam_n have_v even_o in_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n itself_o that_o he_o may_v give_v eternal_a life_n to_o as_o many_o as_o god_n have_v give_v he_o the_o point_n to_o be_v observe_v be_v two_o first_o they_o that_o be_v christ_n have_v life_n from_o christ_n and_o second_o the_o life_n which_o they_o have_v from_o he_o be_v eternal_a doctrine_n they_o that_o be_v christ_n have_v life_n from_o christ_n he_o give_v life_n to_o as_o many_o as_o god_n have_v give_v he_o the_o life_n which_o they_o enjoy_v they_o have_v from_o he_o they_o have_v it_o not_o original_o in_o themselves_o he_o be_v the_o author_n and_o the_o fountain_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o he_o be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o quicken_a spirit_n 1_o cor._n 15.45_o because_o he_o quicken_v and_o enliven_v all_o his_o member_n and_o he_o be_v call_v our_o life_n very_o often_o in_o the_o dominion_n and_o so_o in_o that_o respect_n be_v dead_a as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n intimate_v to_o the_o roman_n rom._n 6.12_o you_o be_v alive_a to_o god_n say_v he_o through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n and_o what_o do_v he_o infer_v upon_o it_o let_v not_o sin_n reign_v in_o your_o mortal_a body_n by_o which_o he_o intimate_v express_o that_o while_o sin_n reign_v in_o any_o man_n so_o they_o both_o to_o christ_n be_v style_v a_o rest_n a_o sleep_n in_o scripture_n not_o a_o death_n they_o only_o die_v indeed_o which_o go_v down_o quick_a to_o hell_n as_o the_o prophet_n david_n speak_v who_o be_v cast_v into_o the_o lake_n of_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n which_o be_v the_o second_o death_n who_o after_o many_o pang_n and_o torture_n suffer_v in_o the_o separation_n of_o the_o body_n from_o the_o soul_n be_v separate_v everlasting_o from_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o from_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o power_n be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o life_n which_o jesus_n christ_n etc._n etc._n oh_o how_o do_v it_o concern_v use_v 3_o we_o then_o my_o brethren_n not_o to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o with_o the_o frail_a life_n of_o nature_n which_o may_v expire_v upon_o a_o sudden_a and_o let_v we_o sink_v into_o eternal_a death_n but_o to_o make_v out_o after_o the_o life_n of_o jesus_n christ_n the_o life_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v above_o the_o reach_n and_o power_n of_o death_n which_o will_v not_o fail_v we_o but_o endure_v for_o ever_o we_o all_o have_v spark_n of_o immortality_n within_o we_o and_o we_o have_v thought_n aspire_v to_o eternity_n we_o will_v not_o die_v if_o we_o can_v choose_v oh_o let_v we_o labour_v then_o my_o brethren_n for_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o this_o be_v a_o eternal_a life_n the_o life_n of_o nature_n be_v a_o fade_a thing_n it_o may_v be_v go_v upon_o a_o sudden_a and_o it_o be_v a_o sad_a and_o dreadful_a thing_n for_o a_o eternal_a soul_n to_o have_v nothing_o else_o between_o it_o and_o eternal_a woe_n and_o torture_v but_o such_o a_o fickle_a and_o perishable_a life_n which_o the_o next_o minute_n may_v be_v do_v and_o let_v he_o drop_v away_o to_o hell_n for_o ever_o oh_o how_o sudden_o may_v such_o perish_v and_o come_v to_o a_o fearful_a end_n but_o if_o we_o live_v the_o life_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v a_o last_a and_o abide_v life_n and_o though_o the_o natural_a life_n decay_n and_o though_o the_o body_n die_v and_o rot_v and_o turn_v to_o dust_n and_o putrefaction_n yet_o this_o will_v flourish_v and_o grow_v strong_a still_o till_o it_o be_v perfect_v and_o make_v consummate_v in_o the_o life_n of_o glory_n and_o why_o then_o be_v our_o labour_n and_o endeavour_n whole_o spend_v to_o nourish_v and_o maintain_v this_o transitory_a life_n with_o thing_n that_o perish_v in_o the_o use_n which_o yet_o when_o all_o be_v do_v will_v fail_v and_o come_v to_o dissolution_n but_o never_o strive_v for_o the_o attainment_n of_o that_o life_n which_o be_v eternal_a it_o be_v a_o lamentable_a thing_n my_o brethren_n that_o the_o divine_a intention_n of_o eternal_a mind_n shall_v be_v lay_v out_o on_o nothing_o else_o but_o perishable_a thing_n now_o that_o you_o may_v attain_v this_o last_a and_o endure_a life_n of_o grace_n i_o shall_v but_o give_v you_o two_o or_o three_o direction_n first_o you_o must_v strive_v for_o save_a knowledge_n and_o seek_v to_o get_v your_o mind_n enlighten_v with_o the_o beam_n of_o truth_n the_o life_n of_o holiness_n and_o grace_n consist_v in_o light_n and_o hence_o say_v the_o evangelist_n that_o light_n viz._n the_o light_n of_o save_v knowledge_n from_o the_o son_n of_o god_n reveal_v and_o manifest_v in_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o life_n of_o man_n john_n 1.4_o and_o in_o the_o word_n immediate_o adjoin_v to_o my_o text_n that_o he_o may_v give_v eternal_a life_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o be_v life_n eternal_a that_o they_o may_v know_v thou_o the_o only_a true_a god_n and_o jesus_n christ_n who_o thou_o have_v send_v it_o be_v true_a indeed_o there_o may_v be_v light_n of_o knowledge_n without_o any_o life_n of_o grace_n but_o there_o can_v never_o be_v the_o life_n of_o grace_n without_o the_o light_n of_o holy_a knowledge_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o gentile_n say_v they_o be_v stranger_n from_o the_o life_n of_o god_n they_o live_v the_o life_n of_o man_n but_o they_o be_v stranger_n from_o the_o life_n of_o god_n the_o life_n of_o grace_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o ignorance_n and_o darkness_n that_o be_v in_o they_o and_o sure_o if_o we_o ever_o look_v to_o rise_v up_o from_o our_o grave_n of_o sin_n and_o stand_v up_o from_o the_o dead_a we_o must_v have_v light_n from_o jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n insinuate_v eph._n 5.11_o second_o you_o must_v endeavour_v after_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o instrument_n and_o mean_n of_o life_n by_o which_o it_o be_v convey_v from_o christ_n to_o all_o his_o member_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v find_v christ_n and_o all_o his_o member_n it_o be_v the_o artery_n by_o which_o his_o spirit_n be_v convey_v into_o we_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o ever_o look_v to_o live_v you_o must_v labour_v after_o find_v it_o in_o his_o story_n that_o as_o man_n he_o be_v extreme_o trouble_v at_o the_o unbelief_n and_o hardness_n of_o the_o people_n heart_n he_o weep_v over_o jerusalem_n with_o many_o tear_n consist_v you_o see_v in_o holy_a knowledge_n which_o be_v set_v forth_o both_o by_o the_o act_n and_o object_n of_o it_o the_o act_n that_o they_o may_v know_v the_o object_n of_o it_o god_n the_o lust_n and_o work_v unfeigned_a faith_n in_o they_o and_o while_o we_o be_v breathe_v out_o our_o soul_n to_o god_n in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o this_o be_v we_o be_v surpize_v with_o distrustful_a thought_n that_o we_o shall_v never_o speed_v in_o this_o request_n of_o we_o god_n will_v never_o be_v entreat_v and_o so_o upon_o a_o sudden_a our_o affection_n cool_v our_o heart_n grow_v dead_a and_o flat_a within_o we_o in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o be_v it_o may_v be_v some_o encouragement_n and_o comfort_n to_o consider_v that_o jesus_n christ_n for_o aught_o we_o know_v have_v pray_v and_o may_v be_v pray_v to_o the_o father_n for_o the_o very_a same_o person_n though_o for_o the_o present_a he_o believe_v not_o yet_o he_o may_v be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o shall_v believe_v as_o be_v appoint_v to_o believe_v in_o aftertime_n and_o then_o he_o be_v as_o you_o have_v hear_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o our_o saviour_n intercession_n so_o that_o the_o prayer_n that_o we_o shall_v believe_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o for_o they_o which_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o so_o that_o the_o point_n to_o be_v observe_v be_v this_o doctrine_n that_o true_a believer_n do_v you_o see_v the_o faithful_a do_v believe_v on_o he_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o faith_n in_o general_n which_o even_a reprobate_n and_o devil_n have_v look_v with_o a_o equal_a eye_n on_o all_o the_o book_n of_o god_n assent_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o all_o in_o gross_a but_o justify_v faith_n which_o be_v the_o faith_n whereof_o we_o speak_v pick_v out_o this_o special_a object_n jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v embrace_v and_o receive_v by_o he_o say_v the_o apostle_n paul_n that_o be_v by_o christ_n and_o none_o but_o he_o all_o that_o believe_v be_v justify_v from_o all_o those_o thing_n from_o which_o they_o can_v not_o have_v be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n act._n 13.39_o the_o law_n will_v never_o justify_v we_o but_o condemn_v we_o no_o we_o be_v justify_v be_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o be_v not_o god_n himself_o and_o be_v not_o everlasting_a life_n the_o object_n of_o our_o faith_n how_o then_o be_v christ_n as_o i_o have_v say_v and_o christ_n alone_o the_o next_o and_o the_o immediate_a object_n of_o it_o sol._n to_o this_o because_o it_o be_v compound_v as_o it_o be_v of_o divers_a thing_n i_o must_v answer_v divers_a way_n 1._o for_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o be_v not_o proper_o the_o object_n of_o the_o faith_n that_o justifi_v but_o be_v so_o call_v by_o a_o figure_n because_o it_o hold_v forth_o and_o exhibit_v christ_n who_o be_v indeed_o the_o proper_a object_n of_o this_o justify_v faith_n or_o second_o the_o word_n of_o god_n although_o it_o may_v in_o some_o respect_n be_v call_v the_o object_n of_o faith_n that_o justifi_v yet_o not_o qua_fw-la justificat_fw-la not_o as_o it_o justifi_v as_o the_o school_n speak_v it_o be_v true_a that_o justify_v faith_n believe_v other_o thing_n propound_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o faith_n as_o it_o justifi_v lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n and_o he_o only_o not_o know_v any_o other_o thing_n here_o but_o jesus_n christ_n and_o he_o crucify_v 2._o as_o for_o the_o second_o thing_n propound_v in_o the_o querie_n true_a it_o be_v that_o god_n the_o father_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o faith_n i_o mean_v the_o faith_n which_o justify_v but_o not_o the_o next_o and_o the_o immediate_a object_n of_o it_o christ_n must_v be_v first_o lay_v hold_v upon_o and_o god_n in_o christ_n such_o trust_n have_v we_o through_o christ_n in_o god_n say_v the_o apostle_n 2_o cor._n 3.4_o even_o turk_n and_o jew_n and_o arrian_n boast_v of_o faith_n in_o god_n you_o know_v and_o yet_o because_o they_o apprehend_v not_o jesus_n christ_n they_o miserable_o lose_v their_o own_o soul_n he_o that_o deny_v and_o so_o by_o consequence_n believe_v not_o in_o the_o son_n can_v never_o have_v the_o father_n as_o you_o may_v see_v 1_o john_n 2.23_o he_o be_v like_o a_o man_n go_v about_o to_o grasp_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v too_o big_a for_o he_o a_o large_a and_o smooth_a round-bodyed_n cup_n it_o slip_v away_o out_o of_o his_o finger_n affection_n that_o we_o may_v love_v they_o and_o embrace_v they_o we_o come_v to_o be_v assure_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v indeed_o and_o truth_n the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o that_o you_o see_v the_o spirit_n work_v not_o this_o assurance_n in_o we_o by_o add_v any_o thing_n to_o god_n word_n by_o cure_v any_o fail_n or_o defect_n in_o it_o but_o only_o by_o bring_v it_o into_o the_o light_n and_o represent_v it_o unto_o we_o as_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n do_v not_o make_v it_o credible_a for_o it_o be_v so_o in_o itself_o abundant_o beyond_o all_o possibility_n even_o of_o the_o best_a addition_n but_o it_o make_v it_o so_o to_o we_o by_o cure_v and_o remove_v the_o impediment_n and_o supply_v the_o defect_n which_o be_v in_o we_o by_o mean_n of_o which_o we_o can_v apprehend_v it_o as_o it_o be_v and_o i_o mention_v this_o the_o rather_o because_o some_o have_v be_v apt_a to_o say_v of_o late_a the_o word_n without_o the_o spirit_n be_v no_o more_o to_o they_o then_o any_o other_o book_n or_o any_o other_o piece_n of_o writing_n now_o if_o their_o meaning_n be_v to_o blame_v themselves_o in_o this_o and_o to_o import_v that_o their_o corruption_n and_o their_o ignorance_n be_v such_o that_o unless_o the_o spirit_n help_v they_o they_o can_v come_v to_o understand_v it_o or_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o better_a than_o another_o book_n it_o may_v receive_v a_o pretty_a fair_a construction_n but_o if_o their_o intention_n be_v to_o undervalue_v and_o abase_v the_o scripture_n as_o if_o the_o proper_a and_o innate_a and_o real_a worth_n thereof_o depend_v whole_o on_o the_o spirit_n revelation_n it_o be_v a_o horrid_a derogation_n from_o the_o precious_a word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o without_o the_o spirit_n it_o may_v be_v no_o more_o to_o we_o then_o any_o other_o book_n such_o be_v the_o darkness_n and_o profaneness_n of_o our_o heart_n but_o yet_o it_o be_v more_o in_o itself_o whether_o the_o spirit_n show_v it_o we_o or_o no._n the_o spirit_n in_o this_o work_n of_o he_o do_v not_o make_v it_o in_o itself_o to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o only_o to_o appear_v so_o it_o make_v no_o alteration_n in_o the_o word_n but_o in_o ourselves_o when_o first_o it_o tell_v we_o and_o assure_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v clear_o so_o before_o or_o else_o it_o certify_v we_o of_o a_o falsehood_n and_o untruth_n only_o it_o be_v not_o apprehend_v and_o believe_v to_o be_v so_o this_o be_v indeed_o the_o spirit_n work_v to_o make_v we_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v without_o it_o and_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o persuasion_n we_o must_v do_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o we_o must_v cry_v to_o god_n to_o send_v down_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o give_v in_o this_o assurance_n to_o we_o to_o set_v his_o seal_n and_o testimony_n to_o it_o that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o so_o to_o put_v the_o matter_n out_o of_o all_o question_n to_o satisfy_v we_o without_o any_o further_a scruple_n that_o all_o that_o be_v deliver_v in_o it_o be_v of_o god_n 2._o we_o must_v take_v in_o and_o cherish_v all_o the_o light_n that_o from_o the_o spirit_n shine_v upon_o the_o soul_n sometime_o a_o beam_n break_v in_o upon_o we_o on_o a_o sudden_a it_o make_v we_o see_v and_o have_v a_o mighty_a operation_n on_o they_o if_o they_o be_v not_o very_o stupid_a and_o profane_a to_o make_v they_o hear_v he_o and_o respect_v he_o and_o obey_v he_o so_o that_o to_o give_v you_o message_n send_v they_o by_o the_o prophet_n jonah_n 3.5_o so_o for_o the_o promise_n of_o
truth_n thy_o word_n be_v truth_n and_o here_o we_o have_v two_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v a_o supplication_n and_o a_o explication_n first_o we_o have_v here_o our_o saviour_n supplication_n to_o his_o father_n in_o behalf_n of_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n sanctify_v they_o through_o thy_o truth_n and_o then_o we_o have_v this_o explication_n in_o which_o he_o show_v what_o he_o intend_v by_o truth_n viz._n the_o word_n of_o god_n sanctify_v they_o with_o thy_o truth_n thy_o word_n be_v truth_n begin_v we_o with_o the_o supplication_n in_o which_o you_o may_v take_v notice_n with_o i_o of_o these_o two_o particular_n first_o the_o thing_n desire_v sanctification_n sanctify_v they_o say_v our_o saviour_n and_o then_o the_o outward_a instrumental_a mean_n by_o which_o he_o pray_v they_o may_v be_v sanctify_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n that_o be_v the_o word_n as_o he_o explain_v it_o afterward_o sanctify_v they_o through_o thy_o truth_n both_o yield_v we_o our_o this_o observation_n doctrine_n the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n by_o which_o he_o sanctify_v his_o people_n it_o be_v the_o instrument_n in_o god_n hand_n by_o which_o he_o do_v this_o great_a work_n he_o sanctify_v they_o he_o be_v the_o god_n of_o all_o grace_n he_o call_v and_o he_o make_v perfect_a stablish_v strengthen_v settle_v they_o but_o he_o do_v it_o by_o this_o mean_n according_a to_o our_o saviour_n prayer_n here_o sanctify_v they_o through_o thy_o truth_n and_o here_o i_o shall_v distinct_o clear_v these_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n by_o which_o he_o sanctify_v his_o people_n in_o a_o way_n of_o inchoation_n by_o which_o he_o begin_v that_o work_n in_o they_o by_o which_o he_o convert_v they_o regenerate_v they_o and_o make_v they_o to_o become_v new_a creature_n and_o this_o we_o find_v abundant_o exemplify_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o apostle_n how_o mighty_o the_o word_n of_o god_n prevail_v to_o the_o conversion_n of_o their_o hearer_n and_o to_o the_o work_n of_o unfeigned_a faith_n and_o grace_n in_o they_o you_o may_v behold_v three_o thousand_o sinner_n wrought_v upon_o by_o one_o sermon_n act_v 2.41_o and_o yet_o again_o as_o if_o these_o have_v be_v a_o few_o five_o thousand_o by_o another_o sermon_n act_v 4.4_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v my_o brethren_n that_o the_o word_n be_v call_v the_o word_n of_o grace_n because_o it_o work_v grace_n in_o god_n people_n but_o whether_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o gospel_n whether_o one_o or_o both_o of_o convert_v and_o work_v grace_n by_o way_n of_o preparation_n it_o show_v a_o man_n his_o sin_n and_o his_o trangression_n it_o empti_v he_o of_o all_o opinion_n of_o himself_o it_o humble_v he_o and_o the_o humble_a john_n baptist_n rough_a and_o rigid_a preach_v of_o the_o law_n you_o know_v my_o brethren_n must_v prepare_v the_o way_n for_o christ_n he_o must_v be_v like_o a_o pioneer_n to_o go_v before_o he_o to_o bring_v down_o every_o high_a exalt_a thought_n to_o make_v the_o mountain_n level_v with_o the_o valley_n he_o must_v be_v like_o a_o harbinger_n to_o ride_v before_o and_o take_v up_o room_n for_o jesus_n christ_n to_o write_v his_o name_n upon_o the_o heart_n this_o heart_n be_v take_v up_o for_o christ_n to_o cause_v these_o everlasting_a door_n to_o be_v set_v open_a to_o he_o when_o he_o come_v and_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v thus_o prepare_v thus_o empty_v and_o thus_o open_v once_o than_o it_o be_v fit_a for_o jesus_n christ_n with_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o his_o excellency_n above_o the_o rest_n of_o holy_a scripture_n not_o that_o the_o law_n or_o any_o other_o part_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n be_v not_o so_o true_a as_o gospel_n be_v for_o there_o be_v no_o degree_n in_o truth_n as_o truth_n word_n be_v either_o true_a alike_o or_o some_o be_v true_a and_o other_o false_a but_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o legal_a truth_n be_v not_o be_v compare_v even_o to_o the_o loss_n of_o good_n and_o liberty_n and_o life_n itself_o let_v we_o seal_v it_o with_o our_o blood_n our_o saviour_n christ_n himself_o you_o know_v do_v not_o think_v his_o blood_n too_o dear_a to_o ratify_v the_o new_a covenant_n and_o to_o establish_v and_o confirm_v the_o gospel_n to_o seal_v the_o truth_n of_o gospel_n promise_n let_v we_o not_o think_v that_o our_o blood_n that_o send_v they_o and_o see_v what_o power_n he_o be_v endue_v withal_o what_o errand_n he_o be_v send_v on_o and_o for_o what_o end_n and_o so_o act_v according_o as_o god_n invest_v he_o with_o power_n and_o send_v he_o into_o the_o world_n to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n and_o to_o save_v his_o people_n so_o jesus_n christ_n have_v invest_v they_o with_o power_n to_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n god_n do_v to_o the_o prophet_n jer._n 1.10_o i_o have_v set_v you_o over_o the_o nation_n and_o over_o the_o kingdom_n to_o root_v out_o and_o to_o destroy_v but_o i_o have_v send_v you_o to_o the_o enforce_v his_o petition_n to_o his_o father_n in_o behalf_n of_o his_o apostle_n for_o sanctification_n which_o have_v be_v take_v from_o the_o business_n and_o employment_n that_o he_o be_v set_v make_v his_o crooked_a like_o your_o own_o 2._o if_o god_n and_o you_o agree_v not_o every_o way_n as_o you_o be_v irregular_a so_o you_o be_v undutiful_a you_o be_v his_o servant_n and_o you_o be_v his_o creature_n and_o therefore_o ought_v in_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v rule_v by_o he_o the_o master_n will_n must_v be_v the_o servant_n will_v in_o lawful_a thing_n and_o therefore_o in_o the_o civil_a law_n the_o servant_n be_v account_v in_o the_o master_n and_o not_o as_o a_o distinct_a person_n and_o much_o more_o the_o creator_n will_v must_v be_v the_o creature_n will_n he_o give_v far_o it_o be_v to_o be_v approve_v as_o it_o do_v unite_v in_o god_n then_o it_o be_v good_a and_o right_a indeed_o when_o as_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n agree_v together_o so_o we_o agree_v with_o both_o of_o they_o in_o the_o very_a same_o thing_n if_o we_o be_v of_o one_o mind_n and_o heart_n in_o thing_n wherein_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n be_v not_o of_o one_o mind_n with_o we_o it_o be_v better_a we_o do_v differ_v then_o unite_v for_o we_o unite_v not_o in_o a_o right_a centre_n but_o if_o as_o we_o be_v one_o among_o ourselves_o so_o we_o be_v one_o in_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n this_o be_v indeed_o a_o bless_a union_n if_o brethren_n so_o dwell_v together_o in_o unity_n that_o all_o of_o they_o do_v dwell_v together_o in_o this_o one_o god_n this_o make_v mention_n of_o love_n in_o the_o truth_n 2_o joh._n 15._o love_n in_o error_n be_v not_o to_o be_v account_v of_o but_o to_o be_v avoid_v rather_o but_o love_n in_o truth_n be_v very_o precious_a consent_n in_o error_n be_v not_o to_o be_v rejoice_v in_o but_o consent_n in_o truth_n my_o brethren_n be_v a_o comfortable_a thing_n for_o this_o be_v consent_n in_o god_n who_o be_v so_o often_o call_v truth_n in_o scripture_n and_o if_o we_o so_o agree_v and_o so_o consent_n we_o may_v depend_v upon_o it_o we_o have_v god_n agreement_n and_o consent_n with_o we_o and_o therefore_o let_v this_o be_v our_o great_a care_n that_o jesus_n christ_n may_v have_v his_o will_n in_o this_o business_n according_a to_o his_o prayer_n in_o my_o text_n that_o they_o may_v be_v one_o as_o thou_o father_n be_v in_o i_o and_o i_o in_o thou_o that_o they_o also_o may_v be_v one_o in_o we_o john_n 17.21_o that_o the_o world_n may_v believe_v that_o thou_o have_v send_v i_o we_o be_v upon_o the_o matter_n of_o our_o saviour_n prayer_n for_o they_o who_o shall_v believe_v in_o he_o by_o his_o apostle_n word_n and_o there_o be_v two_o main_a thing_n as_o i_o have_v note_v former_o that_o he_o desire_v in_o their_o behalf_n first_o that_o they_o may_v be_v all_o one_o then_o that_o they_o may_v be_v all_o in_o one_o place_n the_o first_o of_o these_o request_n of_o his_o he_o propound_v and_o prosecute_v propound_v it_o in_o the_o verse_n which_o we_o have_v even_o now_o insist_v on_o that_o they_o all_o may_v be_v one_o etc._n etc._n and_o then_o he_o prosecute_v it_o with_o divers_a argument_n and_o reason_n in_o this_o and_o the_o succeed_a verse_n whereof_o the_o first_o be_v take_v from_o the_o furtherance_n that_o this_o near_a unity_n of_o they_o will_v be_v to_o the_o acceptance_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o world_n that_o the_o world_n may_v believe_v that_o thou_o have_v send_v i_o that_o they_o may_v all_o be_v one_o as_o etc._n etc._n why_o so_o that_o the_o world_n may_v believe_v etc._n etc._n for_o explication_n of_o the_o term_n the_o difficulty_n lie_v especial_o in_o this_o viz._n what_o sort_n of_o people_n our_o saviour_n christ_n intend_v by_o the_o world_n here_o for_o to_o say_v truth_n the_o world_n be_v take_v divers_a way_n i_o think_v more_o different_o than_o any_o other_o phrase_n almost_o in_o scripture_n sometime_o we_o find_v it_o use_v for_o elect_v and_o sanctify_a and_o sometime_o for_o reprobate_a and_o unsanctified_a person_n sometime_o we_o find_v it_o take_v for_o believer_n and_o sometime_o for_o unbeliever_n as_o i_o can_v give_v you_o instance_n of_o both_o these_o and_o when_o for_o unbeliever_n sometime_o for_o those_o who_o believe_v not_o for_o the_o present_a but_o shall_v believe_v in_o after_o time_n sometime_o for_o those_o who_o
even_o as_o they_o be_v one_o among_o themselves_o so_o god_n and_o christ_n or_o god_n in_o christ_n be_v one_o with_o they_o this_o be_v that_o which_o make_v it_o perfect_a there_o be_v three_o thing_n require_v you_o see_v to_o this_o perfection_n and_o all_o of_o they_o apparent_o suggest_v in_o the_o doctrine_n and_o the_o text._n first_o god_n be_v one_o with_o christ_n be_v in_o christ_n as_o mediator_n thou_o in_o i_o second_o christ_n being_n one_o with_o true_a believer_n be_v in_o believer_n i_o in_o they_o three_o believer_n be_v one_o among_o themselves_o or_o each_o with_o other_o that_o they_o may_v be_v one_o and_o when_o all_o these_o be_v join_v together_o then_o there_o be_v a_o pefect_n union_n perfect_a in_o regard_n of_o part_n there_o can_v be_v join_v thing_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n together_o that_o in_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o time_n he_o shall_v gather_v into_o one_o all_o thing_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n together_o in_o himself_o ephes_n 1.10_o so_o that_o till_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v join_v together_o it_o can_v be_v a_o perfect_a union_n because_o all_o thing_n be_v not_o unite_v that_o be_v for_o in_o he_o they_o be_v knit_v together_o it_o be_v not_o a_o perfect_a union_n because_o there_o be_v a_o member_n want_v the_o body_n mystical_a remain_v imperfect_a in_o regard_n of_o integral_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n insinuate_v ephes_n 4.13_o and_o hence_o say_v the_o apostle_n we_o without_o they_o can_v be_v make_v perfect_a heb._n 11._o ult_n we_o without_o they_o be_v member_n in_o a_o sense_n of_o a_o incomplete_a body_n but_o when_o all_o be_v once_o come_v in_o when_o all_o both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n come_v in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o faith_n unto_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n than_o he_o be_v a_o perfect_a man_n conceive_v it_o in_o his_o mystical_a body_n then_o be_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o stature_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o say_v our_o saviour_n i_o in_o they_o that_o they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o as_o i_o have_v be_v in_o they_o that_o do_v believe_v and_o as_o i_o be_o in_o they_o that_o do_v believe_v so_o i_o will_v be_v in_o they_o in_o all_o of_o they_o that_o shall_v believe_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n and_o of_o these_o last_o especial_o he_o speak_v as_o be_v apparent_a by_o the_o scope_n neither_o pray_v i_o for_o these_o only_a say_v our_o saviour_n for_o these_o only_a that_o believe_v but_o for_o they_o also_o which_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o through_o their_o word_n for_o they_o and_o all_o of_o they_o i_o in_o they_o in_o all_o of_o they_o as_o i_o have_v be_v &_o be_o in_o all_o that_o do_v believe_v so_o i_o will_v be_v in_o all_o that_o shall_v believe_v even_o to_o the_o world_n end_n that_o all_o believer_n be_v join_v together_o past_a present_a and_o to_o come_v there_o may_v be_v a_o perfect_a union_n that_o they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n 2._o that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o perfect_a union_n as_o believer_n must_v be_v join_v together_o all_o of_o they_o among_o themselves_o so_o christ_n must_v be_v unite_v to_o they_o all_o he_o must_v be_v in_o all_o of_o they_o as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o my_o text_n for_o god_n have_v give_v he_o to_o be_v the_o head_n over_o all_o thing_n to_o the_o church_n ephes_n 1.22_o over_o all_o thing_n of_o the_o church_n or_o that_o be_v member_n of_o the_o church_n and_o it_o be_v the_o father_n pleasure_n which_o he_o have_v purpose_v in_o himself_o that_o in_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o time_n he_o may_v gather_v together_o in_o one_o all_o thing_n in_o christ_n ephes_n 1.10_o so_o that_o if_o all_o believer_n can_v be_v gather_v into_o one_o among_o themselves_o and_o not_o into_o one_o in_o christ_n that_o will_v not_o be_v a_o perfect_a union_n because_o they_o be_v appoint_v to_o be_v one_o in_o he_o if_o all_o the_o member_n of_o the_o body_n mystical_a can_v be_v complete_o join_v among_o themselves_o and_o not_o unite_v unto_o christ_n their_o head_n that_o will_v not_o be_v a_o perfect_a union_n because_o god_n have_v appoint_v he_o and_o give_v he_o to_o be_v their_o head_n the_o join_v of_o the_o member_n all_o together_o you_o will_v say_v will_v make_v but_o a_o unperfect_a and_o a_o maim_a body_n unless_o the_o head_n be_v join_v to_o they_o 3._o that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o perfect_a union_n as_o believer_n must_v be_v one_o among_o themselves_o and_o christ_n must_v be_v one_o with_o they_o so_o god_n must_v be_v one_o with_o christ_n and_o in_o and_o through_o christ_n with_o they_o i_o mean_v with_o christ_n as_o head_n and_o mediator_n of_o the_o church_n indeed_o the_o end_n for_o which_o christ_n take_v upon_o he_o the_o office_n of_o a_o mediator_n be_v to_o join_v god_n and_o man_n together_o who_o be_v divide_v by_o the_o fall_n therefore_o god_n send_v he_o down_o into_o the_o world_n that_o he_o may_v be_v in_o christ_n reconcile_n the_o world_n unto_o himself_o 2_o cor._n 5.19_o now_o suppose_v christ_n can_v reconcile_v believer_n each_o to_o other_o suppose_v that_o he_o can_v reconcile_v they_o and_o unite_v they_o to_o himself_o as_o man_n if_o he_o can_v not_o reconcile_v they_o and_o unite_v they_o unto_o god_n this_o be_v a_o unperfect_a union_n there_o be_v a_o great_a defect_n in_o it_o where_o god_n my_o brethren_n be_v leave_v out_o it_o be_v a_o very_a poor_a conjunction_n and_o therefore_o god_n be_v in_o christ_n reconcile_n the_o world_n of_o believer_n that_o while_n christ_n reconcile_v they_o to_o himself_o he_o may_v eadem_fw-la opera_fw-la reconcile_v they_o unto_o god_n who_o be_v in_o he_o that_o so_o the_o union_n may_v be_v perfect_a and_o there_o may_v be_v nothing_o want_v as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o my_o text_n i_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o thae_fw-la they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o now_o be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o perfection_n of_o believer_n union_n stand_v in_o this_o that_o use_v 1_o even_a as_o they_o be_v one_o among_o themselves_o so_o god_n and_o christ_n or_o god_n in_o christ_n be_v one_o with_o they_o then_o first_o it_o serve_v to_o let_v we_o see_v how_o faulty_a and_o defective_a the_o union_n of_o the_o man_n of_o this_o world_n be_v true_o many_o of_o they_o be_v knit_v together_o in_o a_o knot_n they_o be_v confederate_a together_o they_o have_v all_o one_o mind_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n speak_v apoc._n 17.13_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o firm_o join_v together_o in_o a_o bond_n of_o love_n as_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o man_n to_o be_v but_o god_n and_o christ_n be_v not_o unite_v with_o they_o they_o be_v out_o of_o this_o conjunction_n nay_o my_o beloved_n they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v one_o with_o they_o that_o indeed_o they_o be_v against_o they_o this_o be_v a_o most_o unhappy_a and_o accurse_a union_n i_o wish_v all_o such_o will_v think_v upon_o it_o who_o be_v as_o simeon_n and_o levi_n brethren_n in_o iniquity_n who_o be_v confederate_a against_o god_n as_o david_n speak_v psal_n 85.5_o who_o set_v themselves_o and_o take_v counsel_n together_o against_o the_o lord_n and_o against_o his_o christ_n psal_n 2.2_o who_o combine_v themselves_o together_o to_o oppose_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n the_o way_n of_o god_n the_o servant_n of_o god_n the_o glory_n of_o god_n to_o do_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n be_v god_n and_o christ_n in_o their_o confederation_n do_v god_n and_o christ_n join_v with_o they_o and_o combine_v together_o with_o they_o they_o be_v all_o one_o among_o themselves_o touch_v one_o and_o touch_v all_o but_o be_v god_n and_o
of_o this_o chapter_n this_o shall_v suffice_v for_o clear_v of_o the_o observation_n that_o unbeliever_n and_o unsanctified_a person_n know_v not_o god_n at_o least_o they_o know_v he_o not_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n and_o with_o such_o a_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n as_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v in_o that_o they_o know_v he_o not_o with_o a_o affective_a knowledge_n they_o know_v he_o not_o with_o a_o effective_a knowledge_n and_o they_o know_v he_o not_o in_o christ_n but_o what_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n why_o the_o unbelieving_a world_n be_v so_o ignorant_a reason_n 1_o of_o god_n i_o 1.19_o 20._o that_o which_o may_v be_v know_v conceive_v it_o natural_o know_v of_o god_n be_v manifest_a to_o they_o that_o be_v the_o heathen_a for_o god_n have_v show_v it_o even_o to_o they_o there_o be_v a_o image_n and_o resemblance_n of_o he_o stamp_v upon_o the_o creature_n there_o be_v apparent_a character_n and_o footstep_n and_o impression_n of_o the_o godhead_n of_o his_o power_n and_o wisdom_n set_v upon_o every_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v make_v which_o may_v be_v look_v upon_o by_o every_o eye_n how_o do_v his_o glory_n shine_v my_o brethren_n in_o the_o rare_a and_o revelation_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o without_o this_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n to_o know_v god_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n pray_v for_o the_o ephesian_n that_o god_n will_v give_v they_o the_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n and_o revelation_n in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o chap._n 1.17_o by_o which_o he_o intimate_v that_o without_o spirit-revelation_n they_o can_v never_o be_v by_o a_o man_n as_o certain_o he_o be_v not_o far_o from_o every_o one_o of_o we_o he_o will_v not_o see_v he_o but_o when_o once_o this_o be_v remove_v then_o revelata_fw-la ac_fw-la
