carry_v with_o the_o heat_n of_o nature_n it_o make_v a_o great_a show_n be_v help_v by_o nature_n the_o demonstration_n but_o not_o the_o truth_n of_o grace_n be_v thus_o help_v therefore_o this_o clause_n of_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v good_a in_o old_a christian_n they_o be_v every_o day_n more_o and_o more_o root_v firm_a stable_a and_o judicious_a and_o more_o able_a in_o those_o grace_n which_o belong_v to_o their_o place_n and_o condition_n therefore_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v discourage_v though_o they_o be_v not_o carry_v with_o the_o stream_n and_o tide_n of_o nature_n help_v to_o grow_v what_o they_o can_v in_o grace_n when_o if_o they_o grow_v not_o so_o fast_o as_o other_o let_v they_o know_v that_o there_o be_v several_a age_n in_o christ_n a_o young_a christian_n can_v be_v so_o plant_v and_o so_o deep_o root_v as_o another_o that_o be_v of_o a_o great_a stand_n this_o shall_v not_o discourage_v any_o see_v there_o be_v babe_n in_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o always_o this_o for_o a_o truth_n that_o we_o may_v grow_v and_o we_o ought_v to_o grow_v and_o the_o child_n of_o god_n ordinary_o have_v grow_v more_o and_o more_o both_o in_o fruitfulness_n and_o steadfastness_n every_o way_n but_o not_o with_o a_o like_a growth_n in_o measure_n or_o time_n therefore_o labour_v to_o make_v use_n of_o these_o promise_n and_o not_o to_o favour_v ourselves_o in_o a_o ungrowing_a
the_o humble_a and_o mock_v those_o who_o set_v upon_o thing_n rash_o without_o prayer_n as_o though_o they_o be_v lord_n of_o all_o and_o without_o dependence_n upon_o god_n promise_v themselves_o good_a success_n they_o make_v idol_n of_o themselves_o as_o a_o proud_a man_n be_v a_o idol_n he_o worship_v himself_o whilst_o he_o lean_v to_o his_o own_o wit_n plot_n and_o part_n carnal_a man_n thus_o idolise_v themselves_o again_o you_o have_v some_o who_o be_v none_o of_o the_o worst_a religion_n 7._o idolatry_n be_v commit_v by_o trust_v to_o the_o performance_n and_o task_n of_o religion_n who_o commit_v this_o great_a sin_n of_o idolatry_n by_o trust_v to_o the_o outward_a performance_n and_o task_n of_o religion_n think_v that_o god_n must_v needs_o be_v bind_v unto_o they_o when_o they_o have_v do_v so_o many_o task_n read_v and_o pray_v or_o hear_v so_o many_o sermon_n or_o do_v a_o good_a deed_n but_o here_o lie_v the_o spiritual_a subtlety_n in_o that_o they_o set_v up_o these_o thing_n too_o high_a when_o if_o they_o find_v not_o that_o success_n they_o look_v for_o than_o they_o inward_o murmur_v against_o god_n when_o rather_o all_o these_o thing_n shall_v be_v do_v with_o a_o spirit_n of_o humility_n and_o subjection_n use_v they_o only_o as_o mean_n whereupon_o we_o expect_v god_n blessing_n crave_v his_o assistance_n and_o strength_n to_o do_v they_o in_o a_o holy_a and_o a_o selfe-denying_a manner_n when_o we_o do_v otherwise_o and_o trust_v to_o the_o outward_a task_n and_o performance_n we_o do_v we_o make_v they_o idol_n and_o trust_v too_o much_o to_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o rely_v not_o upon_o god_n in_o christ_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o justification_n and_o acceptation_n to_o life_n everlasting_a which_o be_v see_v what_o heavenly_a wisdom_n and_o prudence_n be_v by_o proportion_n of_o wisdom_n and_o prudence_n in_o earthly_a thing_n now_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v a_o better_a state_n in_o another_o world_n then_o in_o this_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o wise_a man_n that_o order_n thing_n so_o as_o that_o he_o may_v not_o loose_a eternity_n most_o man_n in_o the_o world_n be_v penny-wise_a and_o pound_n foolish_a as_o we_o say_v wise_a to_o a_o particular_a end_n to_o get_v particular_a favour_n and_o riches_n 32.29_o deut._n 32.29_o so_o to_o satisfy_v their_o intention_n but_o for_o the_o main_a which_o be_v wisdom_n indeed_o to_o look_v to_o their_o last_o estate_n and_o happiness_n and_o to_o fit_v their_o action_n and_o course_n that_o way_n how_o few_o be_v wise_a to_o purpose_n how_o few_o provide_v for_o eternity_n therefore_o no_o marvel_n the_o prophet_n say_v who_o be_v wise_a and_o who_o be_v prudent_a because_o man_n live_v by_o sense_n and_o not_o by_o faith_n who_o be_v wise_a and_o he_o shall_v understand_v these_o thing_n prudent_a and_o he_o shall_v know_v they_o observe_v now_o the_o next_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v hence_o be_v this_o that_o the_o wise_a and_o prudent_a only_o know_v these_o thing_n there_o must_v be_v wisdom_n and_o prudence_n before_o we_o can_v know_v divine_a truth_n and_o make_v use_n of_o they_o observe_v and_o then_o observe_v the_o word_n be_v light_a yet_o light_v alone_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o cause_v sight_n but_o there_o must_v concur_v unto_o the_o outward_a light_n a_o inward_a sight_n grace_n must_v understanding_n and_o subdue_v the_o will_n and_o affection_n ere_o there_o can_v be_v a_o conceive_n of_o divine_a truth_n save_o therefore_o before_o these_o act_n he_o join_v these_o grace_n who_o be_v wise_a and_o who_o be_v prudent_a etc._n etc._n use_v the_o use_n hereof_o be_v this_o much_o not_o to_o come_v to_o the_o divine_a truth_n of_o god_n with_o humane_a affection_n and_o spirit_n scripture_n outward_o but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o light_n of_o the_o eye_n to_o see_v there_o must_v be_v wisdom_n and_o prudence_n gather_v from_o the_o scripture_n now_o wisdom_n and_o prudence_n if_o they_o be_v divine_a as_o here_o be_v mean_v it_o be_v not_o a_o discreet_a manage_n of_o outward_a affair_n of_o our_o personal_a condition_n but_o a_o order_n of_o our_o course_n to_o heaven-ward_n wherefore_o a_o man_n may_v know_v whether_o he_o be_v wise_a and_o prudent_a by_o his_o relish_v of_o divine_a truth_n for_o otherwise_o he_o be_v not_o wise_a and_o prudent_a in_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v the_o main_a now_o have_v show_v that_o only_o the_o wise_a and_o prudent_a can_v conceive_v and_o make_v a_o right_a use_n of_o these_o great_a thing_n deliver_v he_o be_v mystery_n in_o providence_n who_o can_v tell_v the_o reason_n why_o of_o man_n equal_o good_a one_o shall_v be_v sore_o afflict_v and_o the_o other_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n without_o any_o affliction_n in_o a_o smooth_a way_n none_o can_v give_v a_o reason_n of_o it_o but_o we_o must_v subscribe_v to_o the_o hide_a wisdom_n of_o god_n who_o way_n be_v unsearchable_a in_o his_o obedience_n of_o life_n these_o be_v god_n way_n prescribe_v in_o the_o word_n and_o only_o in_o the_o word_n now_o our_o way_n when_o they_o join_v with_o god_n way_n that_o be_v when_o our_o life_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v right_a right_o as_o they_o agree_v to_o that_o which_o be_v right_a and_o straight_o and_o right_a likewise_o because_o they_o lead_v direct_o to_o a_o right_a end_n we_o know_v a_o right_a line_n be_v that_o which_o be_v the_o short_a between_o two_o term_n that_o which_o lead_v from_o point_n to_o point_n be_v the_o short_a of_o all_o other_o line_n so_o god_n way_n be_v right_a and_o straight_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n which_o tend_v direct_o to_o happiness_n without_o error_n but_o god_n way_n all_o other_o way_n be_v crooked_a way_n so_o god_n way_n be_v right_a as_o they_o look_v to_o god_n and_o as_o they_o look_v unto_o all_o other_o inferior_a course_n they_o be_v right_a to_o examine_v all_o our_o way_n by_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o they_o
